I was expecting more of this game, the best part is the ability to making a lot of choices but in the other hand we have to do some actions so boring, like changing objects place. And this worst part is 80% of the game. I'd like to have less time doing this boring stuff and more time just making choices.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is by far the best David Cage game to date. But because it was made by David Cage, you need to know what you are getting into. This is not a video game, this is an interactive TV show put into video game format. What little gameplay there is, is terrible. Even moving around feels like your character is swimming through jelly. The rest of the game is QTEs and making choices that effect you and the characters around you. The graphics and the motion capture work they put in really shows. The story however i would say isn't as good as heavy rain. The game starts off really strong by introducing us to Markus and Carl(The only likeable human in the game). But the problem comes when the plot train starts rolling. It is almost like this whole game is just some message about black slaves. Like idk i am not black. But being compared to a robot like that is pretty dumb and sorta offensive. Especially by the end of the game, they really hammer it down your throat. Depending on the choices you make you can actually ruin your playthrough entirely with one simple mistake. There are also some major plot holes that show up. Like in Kara's parts. Where it turns out Alice was actually an android too. They pretty much ripped that from blade runner, but did it poorly. It just raises so many questions. Like where did Todd get the money to afford all these expensive androids? I am almost 90% sure there was a scene where Todd hit Alice during his rages and Alice bled from the nose red.... It is m night shyamalan levels of dumb twists. It changes nothing too. Like they just did that to seem edgy. Another thing is a lot of people like Hank. I personally hated Hank. I couldn't care less if he wanted to kill himself. He was a total dickhead, his son died so now he thinks its everyone else's problem. Especially because he is a cop, he does illegal crap right in front of you and screams at his boss. He was such a depressed piece of **** i only cared about his dog, Sumo. That is another thing. All the humans are total **** for no reason, it is like watching a Stephan King mini series. It isn't written terribly but those are the things that really had me going like "wtf... so i am supposed to feel bad that i killed someone who was just going to kill us anyway".Which is why i picked the"evil" path and basically just rose up. Its a great movie. But i don't see the point in replaying it, once you finished it there is nothing left. You can just same yourself the time and watch it on youtube. Only buy if you can get it for like 20 bucks like me and you know what you are getting into. I enjoyed my time with it. But it is a 12 hour movie with nothing to come back to after. I hope David Cage can start working on his gameplay in these kinda games. Also try not to virtue signal in the writing. Just make a good story, try not to get too into politics. Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall it's a great game and fun to play. But I wish you had more of a choice to root for the robots or against them. And the little girl shouldn't be discovered as a robot and should have been a human instead. That really sucked when I found that out. It's like the robots can always tell each other but for some reason she couldn't detect the child was one? And it was silly that lieutenant ended up rooting for the robots.

It's a good game and normally I don't play story sorts of games. You have so many choices in what you can do and each mission has multiple outcomes affecting how things play out giving the game a huge amount of replay-ability. A couple of things that really annoyed me is the girl turning out to be a robot! That seriously did kill that part of the story for me. It would have been far more interesting if the girl was human. The fact she is not is almost like you wanted it to be human but then shoe horned in at the last second that she's a robot.
Another thing I didn't like is how lieutenant becomes to like the robots even know he clearly despised them. Wouldn't it be better if you had a choice in this? Like if you show no emotion then he hates robots but if you get along with him he continues to hate them? He shot you in the face and then next minute he's trying to stop you killing them? That really didn't make sense to me. If there is a way to keep him against them then I apologise but I did try and get that outcome but didn't manage to.
I found it weird that headshots kill robots but the nurse women had nothing in her head? And also at 1 point you get shot in the head and die slowly but then in the interview room a headshot is immediate.
Nothing major but a bit inconsistent.

The controls aren't bad but I felt movement at times was a bit slow. Like when your looking for the robot hideout Jericho (How ever it's spelt) and you are forced to walk around really slowly. Would have be nice to have more of a fast walk or slow run. It was like this at a few times where movement felt to slow for what you were doing.

I liked the horror sort of parts of the game like the junkyard or the house with the crazy robot and sadly I wish there were more parts like this but instead we only got 3.
More crazy evil deviants would have be cool aswell but instead 90% of them were friendly or atleast the ones we seen but I feel like if they were inslaved then more of them would rebel with force and not peacefully.

If you haven't played this game yet I recommend you check it out if you are into sci fi sorts of stuff. Its on PS Now aswell allowing you to stream it on PC if you don't own a playstation.

Instead of exploring the world and really searching for a shelter, you just need to go to the yellow markers and that's it.

Even worse is that not only the markers are placed but also when your objective is to "clean the house" you also see "sub-objectives" like: wash dishes, empty trash...

And that's on "immersive" game-setting. If they limited the "scanning" and reduce the objectives, it would be such a pleasure to explore the stunning world. Instead, its just another "follow the pointer" game.

I hate this with many games. While other games would be unplayable without the markers (e.g. Witcher 3) the World of Detroit is dense enough and delivers all you need to play the game without any UI.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So from the get go I can say that this game looks absolutely phenomenal. The graphics look beautiful, the lighting is excellent and the particle effects like rain looks really excellent. Furthermore, the characters, for the most part are excellent. Connor was extremely interesting as a character who showed some human development while also being excellent for comedic relief with his back and forths between himself and Hank.

The downsides though do stick out. The most annoying of which is the lack of evolution in gameplay. This still feels like Heavy Rain with just a robot theme, the gameplay has not changed or adapted since then. What has annoyed me about it the most though is the fact that every small goddamn action requires a button movement... My character is not mentally challenged they don't need to be told to open a door! The games themes are also a bit of a hit and miss for me because while it presents some interesting ideas such as slavery, racism and persecution, it presents them in such a blunt way that it almost feels like a parody. This goes from scenes such as the androids standing at the back of the bus (all they would have needed was a Rosa Parks lookalike android to just make it a little more clear lol) to scenes where the androids are sent to camps to be destroyed... I'm not making this up it really is that on the nose about this! This is also best presented by the character Markus who really just feels like they come across as generic freedom fighter. He doesn't really feel like he has any other personality and the characters around him don't really have enough personality to really make Markus feel unique, so he just ends up feeling like a generic freedom fighter with a message. While this may sound like a turn off, honestly I found the themes quite funny just because of how much Cage wanted to make sure it was ABUNDANTLY clear that this game is about slavery, racism and persecution that I found myself laughing at how blunt the scenes were trying to be in conveying this message.

Overall, the game is a technical marvel, it is a pretty excellent game in its genre and its quite clear that this is that kind of game you really should try because a David Cage game is its own experience that is worth at least trying. However, it does always feel that with David Cage games the biggest criticism is that they are not games you need to play but games that you can watch and this is the same way I feel about Detroit. In the end, I ask myself; "could I not have just watched someone else play this game?" and my answer to that is always yes, I could have seen someone else play this game. It feels like David Cage would rather have been directing movies and this becomes abundantly clear in the atrocious camera that is locked in place (this has been remedied somewhat but is still terrible), barebones gameplay (if you can call moving around and interacting with objects while pushing buttons for responses gameplay) and very high tech cutting edge graphics to make the characters feel as human as possible. I guess in the end that's the way this game feels, not much different from heavy rain with robots but themes that are really blunt. It is enjoyable if you like this kind of game and enjoy the story with the way it takes you.

For me personally this game does not really feel like it has developed enough to be considered an evolution of Cage's gaming concept and it just feels like the same kind of game I would have played in 2010 (Heavy Rains release date).

It's a wonderfully polished experience, and I really, really wanted to like it, but towards the end, everything became so disjointed that you destroy any attachment created to the characters. Split-second decisions for multiple conflicting storylines and incredibly random qtes lead to an exit you didn't wish for, and it feels SO frustrating. Shame...

And the story, while it started well, the events happening felt forced and often nonsensical. Marcus didn't do anything to become the leader, he just kind of stumbled upon it, and everyone around him instantly agreed, "he is our guy". Kara and Alice ran the whole time, but outside of being incredibly depressing, nothing of note actually happened. The worse of it all was how incredibly predictable the story was if you managed to steer it properly. At the start felt engaging, while towards the end was just a drag that I really wanted to see over. I had plans to explore various missed connections that evaporated the moment I saw the end credits.

David Cage has a talented team under his belt, if only he was able to match their talents and not produce such idiotic and useless writing/scenarios. The acting is quite good - certainly better than any of Quantic Dream's previous works. And overall it just seems like a lot of the non-core parts of the game had a lot of effort put into them. That's why it's so tragic that at it's core, Detroit: Become Human is just another **** David Cage game. This game shows that once again, Cage has failed to learn from his mistakes and has merely gotten better at hiding his flaws. I can talk about a number of them (the lack of any real consequences for many decisions because Cage doesn't believe in game overs, the abrasively obvious moralistic overtones, the terrible cliches - like the son of the painter - who continue to show that Cage cares less about showcasing the human condition and more about pushing one particular narrative), but I'll focus on one in particular that really annoyed me. There are boatloads of menial tasks and fetch quests that have to be completed by the player to progress the story while not providing any real engagement or meaning. If anything, despite the obvious attempt to increase immersion, these tasks make me feel much less immersed because of how menial they are. David Cage needs to realize that escapism is a big part of why most of us play video games. Sure, there are many other reasons as well, but I never pick up a video game just so that I can feel like I'm doing the same chores that I'm avoiding by playing the video game in the first place. Immersion is certainly an important part of video games, and realism can be a key component of immersion. However, David Cage always takes it too far. Video games are special because they can transport us beyond the mundane lives that we lead. There are many great games that allow you to go through "real world" scenarios, but most of these games use surrealism to keep the player immersed - that is to say, there are many realistic situations and choices that the player has to make, but it's always buoyed by the fact that there is something special about the situation. This could involve fantasy or just a situation that's more extraordinary than our daily lives. Either way, we feel like we're able to vicariously experience things that we couldn't otherwise. Detroit: Become Human absolutely has the raw material necessary to pull something like this off. The world in the game is very interesting, and offers many opportunities to use this "surrealist" approach when assigning the player tasks. However, Cage somehow manages to turn this dynamic landscape into a boring, drab fetch quest simulator far too often. It's incredible frustrating to play through once this becomes apparent.

I honestly want to give this game a 4, but because of how many other aspects of the game were done well, I'm upgrading it to a 6. I'm definitely biased against this game because I really disliked pretty much all of his previous games, and I'm frustrated that he's getting away with it this time because the elements that he likely didn't contribute to were so good.

The story is nothing new either, playing with the themes of should robots/androids feel emotions and have equal rights, which I've seen and heard too many times in recent years I truly believe they could have produced something's more unique. Gameplay is very engaging to begin with, as every decision and action does feel like your making a difference, but as played more and more the game became more predictable and less thought out with its twists and scenarios. Also I feel like my decisions really didn't have consequence, don't get me wrong there was the occasionally surprise but overall it felt very much the same 'meh' feeling. Overall, this had a lot of potential, but unfortunately they have fell short of what could have been a brilliantly crafted experience that made you actually think about life and how you can influence it. 6/10 Expand

This game is written with pretty but no nuance whatsoever. This game is an allegory for civil rights but it has such terrible execution behind it. and in many ways oversimplifies the struggle that actual civil rights leaders had to go through to overcome it. That being said though I still enjoyed my time because of how drastically the story changes depending on your choices made.

The collectibles are magazines in DBH and some of them are missable but if you know how to search you will find them, this game is easy to plat btw as its more of 3D choose your adventure book and once you have finished your plat through it shows you other paths you can take next time. 6.5/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Detroit: Become Human isn’t a game, it’s an experience." This or similar banal phrase may frequently be heard about Quantic Dream’s most recent title. And it’s actually not wrong, in case we don’t take it as a praise. Detroit definitely isn’t a game, but the question is what does it want to be, and I’m not sure whether the developers can answer, as the gameplay is too dull for a game, limiting to walking back and forth around corridor-type locations and pressing buttons to progress through the dialogues and QTEs, and the plot is quite fragile for a worthy movie, as its setting is made rather poorly (at least some grounding for now-dying Detroit becoming a world’s capital of futuristic technologies by 2038 would be nice), its backstory isn’t even a bit sophisticated (the game doesn’t show you how and why do androids develop human feelings, it just tells you - they do), and it doesn’t mind forgetting something established within the game’s universe if it’s needed (e.g. Markus is clearly shown to need to physically contact an android to turn them into a deviant, but at some point he just starts to turn entire hordes of androids remotely). And yes, Detroit: Become Human is an experience. A disappointing, unpleasant experience of playing through the game preferring to push on some ‘tragedy’ to cover its unsustainable plot and hide its mediocre gameplay behind ‘nonlinearity’. Yes, the most painful thing about Detroit: Become Human is that it’s not fully nonlinear. Of three main storylines, only Connor’s feels totally free, as you’re able to choose between both sides while playing as him, and you aren’t while playing through Kara’s and Markus’ paths. Whether you want it or not, Kara will become the deviant, flee, approach certain people, etc (though in her story you may at least choose between saving her life only and helping Alice and Luther as well), and the endings when she gets captured by Zlatko or dies feel more like a game over than an independent finale. And while Kara’s story is actually somewhat nonlinear, Markus’ one is disappointingly straightforward until the very denouement. Your choices have almost zero weight until he joins Jericho, but since then not too much will change, as your choices will only be affecting his position within that movement hierarchy, not the fate of the rebellion, as it will continue, with or without Markus, and its destiny is actually in Connor’s hands, not his. These intricacies of the branching trees show that the game might have actually become much more nonlinear. However, despite Detroit is too straightforward for an interactive drama, it actually manages to achieve that level of attention to detail when the game’s replay potential becomes almost limitless, as no two playthroughs will be totally identical if you respond a couple of dialogues differently. The other really strong part of the game is its amazing visuals and a decent sound design, and those who provided them deserve only glorification for their work. Returning to the epigraph of this review, I can tell Detroit: Become Human IS an experience, but not necessarily a positive one. Expand

This game without a doubt sets the bar for what a choice and consequence game should be. The amount of possible parts to take in this is absolutely dizzying, and you truly feel like everything you do matters.

The mocap and graphics are, to this day, totally jaw-dropping. New games coming out nowadays by AAA companies don't look this good. It's almost breathtaking.
Connor and Hank, I must say, absolutely carry this game. Their chapters are exciting, their dynamic is fantastic, and their relationship (depending on what choices you make) is so worth exploring.
Kara and Alice's sections are heartfelt and meaningful, though they contribute little to the overall plot.
Marcus' sections for me dip ever so slightly, just because his chapters feel long and a little boring compared to Connor's. That's not to take away from what is an incredible game, with honestly endless replayability. It's addictive and exciting and I hope we see a sequel in the future!

So corny and bad that it's good! Some of the options are downright goofy, like the part where you are trying to calm down a guy who is on a ledge and has a gun to a girl's head, and you can say, "Hi, my name is Conner", like that is going to calm him down lmfao (funny thing is, his goofiness is the saving grace of the game). Generic angry cops that hate their job, a crazy art collector with a burnout son and a drugged up angst-y lonely man with abusive and rape-y tenancies are some of the supporting characters you will encounter in this "game".

Oh and when you mom told you to clean the house and wash the dishes, you didn't do it did you? You were to busy doing that exact same thing in-game by doing hadouken motions with the right stick next to trash bins, weren't you?

I've played this after 13 Sentinels which is masterpiece in visual storytelling. Playing this afterwards just made all the storytelling flaws more apparent. If it was just some wild fantasy that doesn't really take itself too seriously it would be easier to swallow.

They haven't change anything about gameplay since Heavy Rain. You still trigger actions when trying to look around with camera, because the same stick is used to look around. And sometimes you want to activate an action and instead move the camera. You still get random prompts to press buttons at random times, which in theory try to emulate what the character is doing, but it never gets some understandable gameplay language. Sometimes the same action will require different buttons, sometimes it won't require any presses at all. For example there is one mechanic I really liked where androids can pre-calculate set of actions and then perform them perfectly. But in one instance you still get button prompts afterwards.

I know games can get strong emotional response from me, but unfortunately Detroit managed to get slight one from me only once, near the end of Kara's story.

I really liked the inclusion of flowchart, but it could be less stingy with checkpoints. You cannot save the game normally, you cannot skip dialogues, you cannot fastforward already seen scenes in any way, so exploring other paths is really boring and slow - you have to relive the same scenes almost fully just to get some minor change at one point.

As a good point, this game had a lot less inconsistencies than Heavy Rain.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good-looking with great performances but the story is full of obvious references and metaphors. It was not a good take about A.I since it had nothing to say about it. At least there were really good scenes(mostly with the cop and partner dynamic). Expand

It is a blend of many generic themes and tropes that don't blend well due to the poor writing, and on the nose "imagery". Consequences and actions had left a staggering 85 endings to this, the only enjoyable moments were the detective sequences. other than that just a let down qte b movie

This game is just alright, but it has some really awesome moments. It starts off incredibly. The opening sequence is one of the better opening sequences I've ever played. It's a hostage situation, they set the tone super well, the music is intense, and you're just making a bunch of choices that feel really consequential (at least at the time). So right off the bat, I'm like wow this game is dope. And it mostly continues in that vein throughout the first act with some of the best dialogue-based gameplay I've experienced.

Unfortunately, somewhere around one third or one half of the way through, it totally falls apart for me. The dialogue just repeatedly hits you over the head with the themes and the narrative, in my opinion, proves completely unable to handle the sheer amount of choices you can make with three playable characters. This game feels like playing a "choose your own adventure" movie more than any other game, but it just doesn't really come together and you're better off just watching one the Blade Runner movies. I think this would have been much better if you only could control Connor and Kara, and the story was only about Connor trying to catch Kara. Or, maybe it would be even better if you only controlled Connor in that scenario. Connor often feels like the most interesting to me because he is torn between hunting androids and being one himself (watch Blade Runner). The Markus storyline has its moments, but it becomes too big of a story to work with this amount of choice. In my playthrough at least, the Kara storyline ended up feeling like an afterthought that didn't fit in.

Not to mention that with so many different choices you can make, the main beats of the story are nonetheless the same. I recently replayed the Last of Us, and I think the fact that I felt more conflicted about the choice I was forced to make at the end of that game than I was with any choice I made in this game says it all. I respect the ambition, and I'll always remember a few moments like that opening hostage negotiation, but ultimately this game doesn't work for me.

David Cage isn't exactly known for his masterclass storytelling, but I'd heard good things about this one.

It's more or less what you expect. QTEs, lots of walking, branching paths, horrible dialogue, and tired cliches. I wouldn't have bothered to make this review if this was the usual David Cage garbage, but one of the 3 storylines was surprisingly good. The whole game should have

I think David Cage is improving. Beyond Two Souls is one of the worst games I've ever played, and this game isn't on that level. If you can bear David's other garbage, you'll like this one

Начало игры было крайне интересным и интригующим, но после середины, когда события подходили к восстанию, я думал будет что - то типа фильма планета обезьян, а начался мультик Disney.

I played this game when it came out on ps now in March 2021. And i tried to play it again and i can't lie i couldn't get through it. Horrendous i mean laughably bad acting and poorly written characters manages to rival Beyond Two Souls and Make Heavy Rain look like Shakespeare.

If you are person who love cool story, a lot of drama, a lot of different interesting characters - you must play that game. It is even not a game , it's more like cool interactive movie. I recommend, do not miss such games!

This game is very disappointing. I would strongly encourage players to RENT instead of buy this game. Get it off Redbox or something it is NOT WORTH $60. It's roughly 6 hours at best of gameplay.

The game itself is reasonably engaging and explores some interesting ideas regarding AI. While certainly unrealistic and overdone in the melodrama sphere, the game is fun to play through.

There's no real replay value here, though, once its done I had no patience to redo everything or even parts of the story (which they give you options to do)

One thing I do need to mention is that this game has more political biases of the devs being snuck into the game, which as many can guess, leans decidedly left. There's also no nudity of any kind in this game. Even when you visit the in-game android strip club, all the androids are fully clothed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have come back to edit this because I was so angry writing the last review that I nearly destroyed the Blue Ray this game was on. It is a bug free, pretty execution of an Interesting story. If you take it (as I did) as an analogy for the African American journey, then you sure as hell better not play the way Malcolm X would, this will destroy all the story lines and you will be punished by EVERYONE you care about being killed. The ending I got I believe to be racist, it is telling people that violent revolution will be harshly punished and is ultimately pointless as we will murder your children with machine guns (this literally happened at the end of my play-through). I maintain a 4/10 is warranted with the play through I had.
    ------------------------------
You better behave or this game will punish you, choose to fight the humans they will kill your child, your Connor and everyone else. Horrible horrible playthrough left me so upset I deleted the game! They kill the child you spend the game protecting on a 5 second timer FFS! Terrible terrible writing.

Even the name of the game is a huge problem and mistake: be come human. The android dont even want to be human, they want to live like independent species(if u play the game, u will understand this). another example is: Connor, an "android robocop" simply a copy of Norman Jayden from heavy rain, they both assertive, weak voice, both detective and have a kindda vulnerable body type, but the way they build Jayden is much better. music also nearly not exist, although the sound effect is very good and quite fit the scence. talk about control, is not feel so good, u can understand this when u touch the PS4 controller, this is not a big problem but is a one of the problem will make u dont even want to keep play the game, so dont even ask about should you replay the game. The game some time have bug and models fragment even you play the game in a PS4 Pro, but maybe some time they will "help" you laugh. this game is the product made from about 6 years ago, so dont expect some thing that extra ordinary or epic in this game, cause all the time, this game tell you what to do with forced dialogs, and some moment you will feels like that should have dialogs choices, but it dont have. Just like heavy rain or beyond 2 soul, this game is drama-interactive, so dont expect any open play style element in this game, the game fill with Quick Time Event system and it's very esily get bored. Im a big fan of heavy rain, and this game is such a dissappointment, it do have style, but soon faded with bug, bored story telling, clunky control and plus some funny models fragment moment, this is the game that you just should play 1 time and go another game. If you looking for something mystery or emotional, i think Heavy rain and beyond 2 soul is much good choices for you. not this one. Expand

Detroit: Become Human delivers a story with a ton of possible choices, and a lot of questions for a player to bear afterward. If you like it when games make you think about them after you play them, this is the game for you. Stunning visuals and music score, make you forget about some weaker points of the game. But all in all, it is an enjoyable experience you should not miss.

Detroit: Become Human looks and sounds great, and includes key player choices throughout, though it could have benefited greatly from a tighter script. While it’s commendable that Quantic Dream tried to cover hot-button issues in a big-budget video game, it works better when focused on the personal character moments than the bigger themes that don’t dig deep enough to make a meaningful impact.

Although the narrative is fairly linear, there are enough branching paths over the course of the game to make it feel like your actions matter. That allows Detroit to still be fun even on multiple playthroughs – and for an interactive movie, that’s a rare praise. [Issue#231, p.68]
