I really enjoyed playing this game despite having a ho-hum reaction to prior QuanticDreams titles (Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls). I found myself not wanting to stop and when I did have to stop I found myself thinking about the decisions I made and decisions that were yet to be made.

There are plenty of reviews which praise the graphics or the gameplay, so I want to take a slightly more philosophical view in this review. This will be a bit lengty, so bear with me.

Looking back at the time spent playing Detroit: Become Human, I would have to say my biggest complaint with the game is that there's just no subtlety in the way the conflict between Android and Humans is portrayed.

With exception to the one chapter between Android Markus and his Human owner Karl, every Human/Android interaction is negative or abusive. Even as you walk down the street you see Human owners verbally and physically abusing their Android helpers. When interacting directly with Humans as Kara, Connor, or Markus, there's always a sneer or an underlying skepticism, no matter how peaceful or normal you act.

The closest we get to a positive Human/Android interaction is the relationship between Lieutenant Hank Anderson and Connor. But that starts off very abusive and only turns into a positive experience if Connor makes the right set of decisions.

The game bludgeons the player with this situation where Humans are complete garbage towards Androids. Anyone with a single shred of empathy would side with freeing the Androids given the situation as presented.

Additionally, when Markus begins freeing the Androids and granting them free will, all of them follow him without question. Not a single one of them makes the decision to stay with their Human owners. Historically we know this is inaccurate and in all cases where a group is oppressed there are some who feel loyal enough (or otherwise compelled) to stay with their oppressors. Not a single Android in Detroit: Become Human does this, not even when Markus explicitly offers the choice. Except as a vague "Public Opinion" meter, no Humans among the general public support the Androids' cause throughout the course of the game, even when the Androids protest peacefully. No Android/Human collaboration. No Humans marching with Androids in their own version of Android Lives Matter. The game pits Humans on one side and Androids on the other.

I feel like the situation was too binary where the player's only real choice was to determine if the Androids would end up as bad as, or better than, the Humans. Maybe that was the point of the exercise but having the sides aligned as either/or muted the overall message, in my opinion.

Otherwise, this was a fantastic story where I felt compelled to play through it completely three times and reload varying checkpoints to see different endings another three beyond that. I hesitate to say it's a $60 value but it's definitely worth picking up and playing multiple times. I'm torn between an 8 and a 9, so for the purposes of Metacritic I'm rounding down to an 8, but would give it a solid 8.5 if I could do half scores.

I could knock the game down a point for the occasional, ever so slightly, clunky controls/camera angles. While there's one twist mid through that felt a bit shoehorned in and a tad underdeveloped.. But that would be mere nitpicking, and would be shortchanging a massively ambitious gaming experience that somehow raises the bar in what it sets out to do. As much as I love similar gamesI could knock the game down a point for the occasional, ever so slightly, clunky controls/camera angles. While there's one twist mid through that felt a bit shoehorned in and a tad underdeveloped.. But that would be mere nitpicking, and would be shortchanging a massively ambitious gaming experience that somehow raises the bar in what it sets out to do. As much as I love similar games Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain, and Until Dawn, Detroit is more expansive, more challenging, more thought provoking, and with a strikingly cinematic eye for detail. The three character arcs are given three distinct visual styles, from the use of color, to the cinematography. Markus' story is epic in scale and scope, with grandiose wide shots and smooth camerawork, Karla's is gritty, dark, and with a more handheld style, while Connor's is cool, sterile, and precise. It's this attention to not only its storytelling, but the way in which they bring these characters to life so thoroughly, that plenty of tension spills over when you are faced with a difficult decision, or accidentally make the wrong one. Every aspect matters, and the flow chart that displays your progress and which pathways you have yet to unlock makes each play a different experience, and I think each play will be as satisfying as the last. This is honestly up there with The Last of Us and the Uncharted series for me. I'm not as much of a hard core gamer as others, but I'll definitely be returning to this one, and I already look forward to playing through it again. This is a landmark video game experience, with incredible and fascinating storytelling and unique, intuitive, gameplay. It's also genuinely terrifying at times, and even hard to stomach. Not just because of the imagery or brilliant atmosphere, but also because of how sucked into it you become, and some of your choices you may regret. It's insanely involving and addicting, and I don't get why it never got as much credit as it deserved. Expand

I'm a particular fan of the introduction of the flowchart feature - not only did it help with trophies, but it was also nice to see how the game mapped out. Some chapters had so many different combinations that it did really feel like every choice mattered.

It is sad to see that the game's official ratings are being impacted by people who dislike David Cage, as it unfairly criticises the 100s of others who worked to create such a great game. However, I think this will go on to be QD's most successful game yet, and I look forward to what they will offer next!

This game has amazing production values, and you can tell by the top-notch graphics and voice-acting. The story was ok, but that wasn't what made this game so good, it is the exhilarating decisions that you have to make, especially during the timed sections, I don't remember when a game made me so stressed and so exhilarated at the same time during decision time. You always have the thought of characters dying throughout the game, and that ups the ante. Now I believe this is the first truly authentic "your descisions will impact the story" type of game. It's not 100% like that , but some decisions you make will completely change how one scene plays out for one player and another for someone who makes a different choice. (There seems to be about 3-5 different outcomes on average for each chapters; not including the endings). Dialogue options can be unlocked for one player, but not for another if some clues are missed. Multiple endings, based on your choices...you get the point. And surprisingly, this game has some longevity for a interactive game, the flowchart peaks my interest, and you can either play through the game twice, or mess around and see how different decisions would change the outcome. The only con is that the theme of this game never evolves or innovates in its genre. Other than that, it's one of the best interactive game to date. Expand

The game starts out really well and lets one immerse onself into being an android that is basically a tool or a slave if you will.
As the story progresses however, there's nothing left of being an android - they have no identity other than being 1:1 humans with android bodies.
And that really kills the atmosphere and the potential of the game. It's still great to play through it but

Story is good too, though not perfect yet for my liking but they did quite good job here. The starting chapter can easily hook you up. Some chapters are somewhat dragging in my opinion but overall I was satisfiled.

The bad part ,however, are the choices that sometimes unclear to me of what characters will do. They should give us more explanation in each choices. For exp, in the first episode there is one choice "Blame" but they did not explicitly tell you who are gonna be blamed ? I thought our protagnist was gonna blame human, but instead he blame the villian, which made situation worse and not what I intend. I had to frustatedly reload the mission again. The unclear choices like this one happened many times in the games and are very critical to gameplay so I was gonna game this game 8/10. However, after I reconclied everything and thought about how vast the content is. I think 9/10 is solid because I took about 15-20 hrs to beat this game first time and yet I feel like it is only 1/3 of all content. There are so many route I could explore. In term of all content, it could have been 40 hrs or so, which is very huge for a movie interactive game like this.

The story is decent enough. Some of the writing is overly melodramatic and occasionally trite, but there's a solid theme behind it. The ethical questions arising from artificial life is a fertile ground for books and films and this story treads mostly the same ground. But that's not a complaint - it's a good theme to cover and David Cage does it pretty well.

Graphics are superb. Amongst the best in this generation. The story depends heavily on your emotional investment in the characters, so it helps that the mo-cap and voice actors are excellent.

What little gameplay this has is either QTE or click-and-point nonsense. It isn't difficult but it interrupts the pace and adds nothing to the story.

f you treat this like a 20+ hour mini-series you will enjoy it immensely. This story is worth at least one play through (maybe two).

Gaming was never as great as it is now. With graphics giving us everything we wish for and whatever we think we needed ... and it only gets better and more realistic from here on out. Now I could rate games that I didn't like too of course, but as of now I really want to boost those that I dug a lot. And those are the ones with a story ... an intriguing one at that! Because morally speaking there is so much you can decide here ...

The way this game was developed, with three stories intertwined together to form a comprehensive narrative, is remarkable. The story in itself is nothing new, but your interaction with it makes it epic!
I played the entire game a second time and make some different choices. That is when something amazing happened: the story changed radically! Entire scenes and narratives were gone and new ones took shape! I felt like I was playing a different game. I could not believe what I was experiencing!
Granted, the theme of the game and its type of gameplay is my cup-of-tea, so I was predisposed to like it, but it also means I expected a lot from it. However, what I got was beyond my wildest expectations! I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you like story-driven games where every decisions are meaningful, you’ve got to play Detroit!

I have finished all Quantic Dream's (not David Cage, he is not QD, people should give the studio the credit!) games since Fahrenheit and while I enjoyed them, there was always something lacking or too much but that trend ended with Detroit for me, it checked all the boxes and got the perfect score from me! It might change in the next-gen but Sony really did an amazing job this generation!I have finished all Quantic Dream's (not David Cage, he is not QD, people should give the studio the credit!) games since Fahrenheit and while I enjoyed them, there was always something lacking or too much but that trend ended with Detroit for me, it checked all the boxes and got the perfect score from me! It might change in the next-gen but Sony really did an amazing job this generation! (I own all three major consoles and love the games without factoring which console it's on)

I can't believe how much negative reception the game got, I assume it's because David Cage is probably not much of a decent human himself but maybe those reviews should have factored the team behind it and judge the game, not the studio head.

    Let's get to the game:

First of all, the decisions really mattered and the game really changes based on them; it's also so smooth that you don't realize that you might be off the path. But the amazing point is, it's not just for the sake of having different paths, they actually are all well-crafted!

The three separate characters really feel like three different games with Kara being my favourite one and Connor and Markus tied at second (ok, I like Connor a bit more, to be honest!), yet somehow the stories come together so well that you can feel the butterfly effect! Unlike Heavy Rain which had very poor voice acting, the acting in Detroit is amazing, I really liked the level of attention and the love the actors had put in! (I recommend watching the behind the scenes clips of the show)

The music was top notch, great idea to have three different artists for each character, really well-done!

The graphics are so great and beat games released this year! It's amazing how well it performs on PS4. Granted, you should like the genre: it's not everybody's cup of tea but if you do like Interactive Narratives, this game is hands down the best one ever made.

I was going through the news and saw that QD recently formed a new partnership with NetEase so I am not sure if the next QD game would be a loot box riddled mobile game or else, but if this is the last AAA game they made, it ended on a high note!

I think it is good to explore potential societal issues in computer games. It might even be real someday and sooner than we think. Science fiction has been a pre-cursor to science fact. You can see this one as a interesting social experiment of potential future things to come, maybe?

Conor was a bit of a robot drone and Kara was to self absorbed to see the bigger picture for me to feel any great empathy for those two characters plights. Now Markus his journey was genuinely heart warming and heart breaking. Some of those marching/protest scenes had real emotional gravitas.

Remember the Star Trek TNG episode about Data's trial about his right for self-determination? If you loved this episode, you will love this game.

This game is a masterpiece. Yes QTEs are annoying and a lot of people seem strangely triggered and melting their snowflakes about the story being a bit too "SJW" to their tastes while they grasp at straws trying to make parallels to current day events about whatever their fears are. As far as I'm concerned, it's their problem and their loss.

It sports a thought provoking story worthy of Asimov's legacy. If you think this is about current day whatever in your persecution of SJW fantasies and hallucinations, you seriously have issues and need to take LOTS of steps back from current day politics. You drank WAY TOO MUCH KOOL-AID and need to sober up and calm the heck down.

The story has nothing to do with current day events, it's GREAT anticipation sci-fi about AIs, Robots and how we're going to treat our creations when the time comes and they might develop more than what we thought they would, transcending their programming.

A well deserved 10, I'll be recommending this one warmly for years to come to my fellow gamer friends.

    Cheers!

Introduction: After multiple showings and demonstrations at E3 about the vast branching choice that Detroit: Become Human was going to offer, Quantic Dream latest game has finally come out. Will this choose your own adventure drama lives up to its E3 promises or will this game be thrown in the android scrap yard?

Story: This game follows three androids named Markus, Kara, and Connor. Markus story follows him starting a revolution to give the same rights to android as humans have. Kara has to protect a little girl that as to go on the run due to her abusive father. Last but not least, Connor is a prototype detective that is working on a case of why androids are suddenly having empathy and acting like humans. These stories eventually cross paths as more twist and turns unveil within the story. This story has a lot of good moment when playing as Connor or Kara but I always felt that Markus story and his line performance came off as a bit cheesy. Markus story is filled with clichés and moment that just feel a bit forced. With that being said, the story as a whole is engaging and fun for the whole 10 hour run time. You will get an interesting outlook on the story too if you decide to play it more than once with different choices, which I would highly recommend.

Gameplay: This game is your standard choose dialog adventure game with QTE moments thrown in for the action scenes. Normally, I despise QTE’s but in this game, they really work since characters can be killed off at almost any moment of the game, giving a sense of every encounter being intense. Most choices are meaningful due to the fact that the story can branch off in so many ways. Once every chapter is completed, you get to see a flow chart of all the choices you could have made and it really gives a sense of scope on how many options you do have in this game. My only problem with this is Markus choices don’t have much difference in outcome due to how integral his part is in the story. Even when killed off, he is just replaced with his female counterpart and the story continues without your involvement. His most important choice, if you keep him alive, is that he can choose to protest peacefully or violently. This is easily fixed due to the other 2/3 of the game not having this issue. The gameplay, for the most part, is top notch and has multiple paths for you to explore in multiple playthroughs.

Technical: I say this about almost every Sony game, but the statement still holds true. Top-notch graphics, the characters and the city of Detroit look so good, it was almost like watching a live action movie. A masterful soundtrack with a few forgettable songs here or there. No glitches or presentation issues present while playing. A technical masterpiece on every level.

Verdict: Detroit: Become Human definitely live up to the E3 demo for having crazy amounts of branch storylines. The game can be a bit cheesy but still offers a fun time through the world of Detroit. This game sets a new bar for choose your own adventure games and I hope to see something come along that can use the Detroit formula and make something even better.

    Pros
    +Engaging story
    +Many branching paths to take
    +Amazing on a Technical Level
    +Great Soundtrack

    Cons:
    -Markus story is cheesy
-Most of Markus choices don’t matter

A game that gives you the reigns on the narrative is a quite a strong fulfilment. Detroit Become Human fulfils that partnership with player control and solid narrative. I enjoyed this game for the most part and it really tied a heart gripping connection between the three main characters and the host of supporting ones.

Although this game is very well crafted and something I thoroughly enjoyed, it did have some small unfortunates. The game was well written and narrative was solid, however I felt gridlocked at points, sometimes I would choose an option not knowing that it would lead me the wrong direction. I also felt cornered from some parts of the game based on my actions, and while this is a major in game mechanics, I felt clouded as to the overall ending I was headed for.

Though is was sometimes a bit misleading, I still enjoyed the game. The tense dialogue decisions, relationships with other characters and the whole arc of the story ran really well. I loved the perspective of three very different characters. I loved how it broke the bounds of a human connection and roped in a real potential in a robotic future. Every niche and stone from the menu screen android to the wonderful map terrain was really captivating.

Quantic Dream knows how to make a game, they understand how to bound a deeper connection, how to punish for consequence abiding actions. Having played an earlier game of theirs in Heavy Rain I expected a solid standard of content and it smashed the standard of narrative driven games beyond a countable limit.

While I have some down points, they do not compare to the overall enjoyment I had. Execution was unparallel in a story sense and really dominated in giving gameplay as well as the control of the final ending.

The story is truly amazing. You play as three different androids on their journeys throughout Detroit. First you have Connor who is an android working with the police hunting down androids who are gaining consciousness or as the game calls it becoming deviant. Then you have Kara who became deviant to protect a child that was being abused. Last is Markus whose journey is the one who will shape most of the story because he is the leader of the deviant group looking for rights and freedom. The story lets you shape it the way you want and will test your patients with humans which is so much harder than you'd think. The game really makes you hate the ever living **** out of them and if you are more forgiving than me then good on you, because I showed little mercy in this game towards the fleshy meat bags. The games story is moving and I found myself so engaged by then end I was sitting up in my chair rooting for the characters to succeed.
Those who aren't aware of how Quantic Dream games work they are much like Telltale games. This means walking around parts, very dialog heavy scenes that will shape the story, and quick time events FOR DAYS. That is it. If you are a person who hates dialog heavy games, and uses the phrase "why don't I just watch a movie". This game is not for you, and nothing I say will change your mind. The game is average length with a large replayability with how many branching parts that are available to the player. The quick time events can be hectic, but thankfully it isn't death if you mess one up so they aren't that bad. That being said I did get slightly frustrated at the responsiveness to them. Many times I definitely did the right press, but I guess it didn't register so I ended up getting hit. It didn't ruin my story it was just frustrating.
Overall the game is beautiful one of the best PS4 games out there. The story is gripping and just long enough to wrap up the story without seeming stretched. The gameplay isn't for everyone, but if you like story driven games you will being doing yourself a disservice missing this game. The multiple paths and choices make me want to pick up this game again and choose the path of peace vs my Magento choices I did. This game definitely hits a must BUY from me.

If you come to Detroit with an open mind, and are able to forgive the derivative, on-the-nose references within its android rights movement, there’s a lot of enjoyment to be had. Detroit is cleaner and more coherent than either title, and prevails due in large part to the likability of its characters, and the relevance of their story. Expand

I personally love any story-rich game but this one is truly innovative and amazing. I strongly recommend playing this game. The only thing that is annoying a little bit is camera control but no biggie tbh,

Despite the irony of the story revolving around robots, the characters feel incredibly real and gripping, with it being extremely difficult to not empathise with even side-characters. With the themes regarding segregation, prejudice and discrimination which draw heavily real world events, as well as fairly reasonable technologies that well and truly could be in our near future, it is a difficult task to not be immersed yet terrified of this world that Cage has created. Most of the issues with Cage's previous games, such as unneeded interactions, gratuitous nudity, and unbelievable characters, have been ironed out, which make it a lot easier to become involved with the game and the characters. The game's story would have been a 10/10 (in my eyes at least) if it were not for the endings, which without spoilers, appear very 'walking into the sunset'-esque. This is undoubtedly a result of the fact that the games story and ending is based on your decisions, but the quality of the endings do not seem at the same level of the rest of the story. Nevertheless, Cage has created an amazing world with characters that you can't help but love and root for in his arguably best work. Expand

This title is more an "experience" than a game, but stunning graphics, great story and current world issues make it an experience worth undertaking..

Artistic masterpiece - narrative, graphics and soundtrack are some of the best ever made for a video game! Only negative is that some of the more linear chapters can get a bit tedious when going back for a 3rd or 4th play-through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "This is our future." These opening lines set the stage for the paradigm of this interactive narrative experience. If one approaches this as a game they can win or lose, that there is a right and wrong way to approach a scenario, that there is some sort of "pro strat" or even superior narrative arc, then all of these are missing the point. David Cage has presented an interactive speculation based on the past of several nations, primarily the US, Canada, and Russia. Some people have accused this game of being "hamfisted" but I have a suspiscion that these people are uncomfortable with real world issues invading their gaming "safe space" where they do not have to interact with greater society. Some may also feel that some issues may be taboo to discuss in an interactive form as someone might choose to interact with the topic in a way they disagree with, perhaps most notable whether to take a violent or peaceful approach to protesting. People should explore all these avenues. That being said, I feel that focusing on the Markus storyline, the freedom fighter/liberator character, is missing a massive angle of the story.

"You can't kill me: I'm not alive." Has the story of an android hunting deviant androids been done before? Of course! This is not new territory. However, the variety of choices and motivations for HK800 unit Connor to accomplish its mission or deviate are staggering, and his relationship with Hank is everything you could ask from a hard-boiled disillusioned vet being partnered with the by-the-books rookie you could ask for, but with a variety of additional facets brought to bear. How does a human react when his partner dies, and comes back the next day as if it was only a slight inconvenience? How does an android react when it experiences death through a mindlink, but without the normal software corrective measure to erase that experience? Especially one who believes it can't be killed, that it can't die because "I'm not alive." One who is confronted time and again by androids who state they ARE alive contrary to what your experience with dying and coming back may tell you. I think that correctly experiencing Connor may require a level of understanding an unusual mindset that some players may not grasp, as they may try to play it as too human from the get go rather than accepting the character as presented which continually insists on its inhumanity. Try playing Connor according to Asimov's 3 laws of robotics and try and fins the point where it needs to Deviate as opposed to you the player foisting your humanity upon Connor due to your discomfort. I think it will give you a genuine experience.

"I thought..... I was alive." "I'm scared! I want to live... I'm begging you" If you haven't ever seen the Kara tech demo from 2012, then you are missing a large piece of the narrative puzzle. It's included as a bonus feature in the extras, but you can find it on YouTube under "Kara Tech Demo" and it is the seed from which the Detroit Become Human has sprouted. The story of Kara is emotiinally charged and brings a lot of the same survival feelings of TellTale's Walking Dead's first story in which a young girl is cared for by an circumstantially adoptive parent. Kara presented me with the hardest choices as I had to balance survival with Alice's reactions. For example: In a very early choice, after being on the run, Kara has a choice to steal clothing in order to pass as human and get something draw and warm for Alice. However, Alice insists that stealing is wrong. At this point you must make a choice between something practical and maintaining Alice's innocence. And this is often the dillemma with Kara: can you survive and maintain Alice's happiness? Will Kara's motherly instincts prioritize protection oe nurturing? You can even choose that Kara is essentially only protecting Alice due to her programming, though only recommend that as a narrative exercise since it's kind of depressing.

But, this experience is not perfect. One of the main focuses is on replaying the game to get a full experience, and there are several scenes where choice is very limited or inconsequential. While all scenes are exceptional on fhe first playthrough, on the second and third time there are several Markus scenes which are simply a chore to playthrough, and a couple of Kara and Connor parts I wanted to press fastforward on. There are also points you earn from completeing certain plot points, and I am sitting at 10000 points with nothing left to buy with them. And occassionally the dialogue options are ambiguous. Another small note is there are brief Marvel style epilogue scenes in the credits, and there needed to be more and a way to re-view them.

However, these flaws are small mars on this shiny gem of faceted storytelling. All of this and I have not even mentioned the gorgeous settings, exceptional music, and monumental acting from an incredible cast.

I've been waiting for narrative game like this!! Thank you Quantic Dream for making this experience comes to real life. Visual, music, acting, story, branching system and all is superb! The only complain for me is the camera angle that abit annoying on certain scenes and that particular Jericho mini game that too repetitive. Will play again until i got all endings. 8/10.

Detroit: Become Human delivers a story with a ton of possible choices, and a lot of questions for a player to bear afterward. If you like it when games make you think about them after you play them, this is the game for you. Stunning visuals and music score, make you forget about some weaker points of the game. But all in all, it is an enjoyable experience you should not miss.

Detroit: Become Human looks and sounds great, and includes key player choices throughout, though it could have benefited greatly from a tighter script. While it’s commendable that Quantic Dream tried to cover hot-button issues in a big-budget video game, it works better when focused on the personal character moments than the bigger themes that don’t dig deep enough to make a meaningful impact.

Although the narrative is fairly linear, there are enough branching paths over the course of the game to make it feel like your actions matter. That allows Detroit to still be fun even on multiple playthroughs – and for an interactive movie, that’s a rare praise. [Issue#231, p.68]
