It's huge, it's beautiful, and mechanics are smooth. However having played to level 20, splitting time between PVE and PVP, the whole experience seems incomplete. For a game that is predicated on being the guardians of a world on the brink of decimation, I really don't feel all that motivated to save it. It seems as though Bungie is relying completely on the players to provide the heart and soul to the game. All-in-all I'll have fun with it, but was expecting a much more well rounded experience. It's incredible how bad this is given the budget. How do you spend so long with so much money and so many professional developers, and produce this? Basic elements of development have been ignored. For one thing, the narrative elements are appalling. They're essentially non-existent. The world, characters, and narrative are totally undeveloped. I don't mean developed poorly. I mean literally no effort has been made to construct any real kind of story. Dialogue is completely barebones, only serving basic game functionality. Peter Dinklage's phoned-in performance makes total sense now, because there is no attempt at an actual script, nor is his character developed. He has nothing to work with and there was no legitimate reason to hire such a huge actor for the role he plays. The only reason he was hired was as a transparent marketing con to trick people into thinking that this game actually had some kind of narrative content. "Marketing con" is probably the best general description of this game, in fact. Another good example of this is the music, for which Paul McCartney was hired to create a completely mediocre credits song. Again, this decision was obviously made with no desire to actually create a good product, it was solely made to generate publicity. The rest of the music is equally mediocre. And then of course the gameplay. Again, it's completely barebones and none of the hyped elements have been fleshed out. The revolutionary "shared world shooter" stuff is just more marketing rubbish - it's just a co-op game with an undeveloped hub world. And the actual shooting is completely bog standard. It's competently crafted, but the enemies are extremely simplistic and monotonous, and likewise the gameplay in general is completely repetitive. All in all, this is not just a bad game, but a game which could actually do serious damage to the industry in the wake of other uber-hyped triple-A mediocrities such Watch Dogs. It is clear that no real work has been put into the development. Again, I must emphasise that the developers haven't honourably tried something but failed. They have literally not tried. Content has not been developed. The millions of dollars have just sunk into the bank accounts of various Bungee employees over the unjustifiably protracted development period, and they've sat back and laughed it up, comfortable in the knowledge that at the end of the day they can just play the now all-too-familiar game of whipping up a storm of disingenuous hype amongst a credulous customer base, and embargo reviews. And based on the initial sales it looks like they've gotten away with it. But if things keep going like this, it's only a matter of time before the public catches on to this behaviour and loses faith in the industry. Thank God that sites like metacritic are coming to the fore so that customers can call them out for it en masse. Don't buy this game. Expand

It was amazing, the first time I went to the Tower, I saw two people dancing, others sitting, and I even found a soccer ball to kick around! The attention to detail is astounding. The story has been good so far, I'm at about the 4th mission, but I can see myself getting hooked in the lore of Destiny. The multiplayer is like nothing I have played before. I have played COD, but never Halo. The Sci-fi elements make it very interesting to me, whether it be the powerful guns, or the ability to lift into the air and slam down on the heads of many opponents. One thing that I didn't like was the loading time to jump into a multiplayer match, it seemed like I stared at the video of the ships flying together for far too long. Maybe that will change in the future. With all that said there is so much you can do in Destiny, I can see myself playing this with friends for a very long time.

You can see from the start that some serious money has been spent on this game. With nice visuals, sounds and extremely solid gameplay mechanics but that's pretty much all that can be positively said about this game. The story is very repetitive, with the same missions carried out in different settings over and over. The length of the story is very short and there's really no incentive whatsoever to veer off the main story path and explore. There will be hidden caves with higher end enemies inside them. An obvious place to have some decent loot right? Nope. Nothing.

The Strike missions are in all fairness an enjoyable experience when played with friends, but the distinct lack of chat support makes it pointless trying to team up with other individuals. Not that you'll actually need to as on normal difficulty the game can be played with eyes closed. And on Hard difficulty only certain enemies are moderately tricky, sure the bosses will take a lot longer to down but there's little danger of dying.

The PVP aspect of the game has some potential with the very solid shooting mechanics. The map designs are by no means great and could do with some good verticality put into them but in the main they are decent layouts. However, any fun that may be had in the crucible is quickly sucked away by the inclusion of the super moves. I understand they are trying to add something different to the game but 1 hit kill moves that are practically impossible to fight against and obliterate everything on screen instantly are not the way to go about it. The 1 hit kill shotgun is vastly overpowered and is unanswerable in close quarters. Overall it's just an extremely unbalanced pvp multiplayer with limited maps and limited game modes. At the very least i'd expect a "hardcore" vanilla mode, with the option to play without the ridiculous super powers and perhaps the mini-map which negates any potential stealth approach to gameplay.

Overall, A well built game that seriously lacks any ideas other than go to point A defend against a horde then kill a boss and with terrible unbalanced pvp.

    CONS
    - Can get quite lonely and boring if you play alone
    - Not enough PVP or Strike maps
    - Story does not have a lot of dialogue
    - Voice acting quite poor

Destiny is a game which is has quite a few elements to it. There are raids, strikes, open world
exploration, story mode and also PVP. What I can say is that this game does not do any of these elements brilliant however, it does seem to do it all very good.

The story first of all is quite fun however the voice acting is poor and there is not a lot of dialogue. The fact that you can play the story mode with 2 other friends is also a bonus as this makes the experience a lot more fun.

I am finding the strikes so far very good and there is also different level strikes which offers better loot the harder you go. This gives you sence of progression and reward which entices you to play more of them.
I can say the game appears to be quite harder as well than playing the beta version which makes the battles more interesting.

Bungie said that this game really starts at level 20 and I can see where they are coming from. You feel more rewarded and more progression when hitting level 20 and trying to get more gear.

I have not had a lot of experience with the PVP yet only an hour however I have found it fun to play especially with friends. Some people say that PVP is quite repetitive as there are not a lot of maps and no filters to take out the maps you dont want but the game modes do seem fun not a lot of difference to Halo or Call of Duty.
In some ways i do think it is quite limited at the moment on content (i.e strike/pvp maps) however, I do feel that the game will only get better as time goes on and I am very interested to see what the expansions give us.

All in all there is quite a few things bungie can do to improve this game which I do believe will happen over time the game though is very fun to play with friends and i would reccommend to people who enjoy Halo and Borderlands.

I dont know why people are giving such low scores for this game especially for the fact of no offline single player mode. Everyone knew deep down this was going to be online only and bungie nor activision hinted about offline play. This game is fun to play and I am really enjoying my time in the game.

It's technically brilliant, but it has the bland story and mechanics you would expect to find in a generic free-to-play shooter.

It's more fun when played with friends, but the 3-player coop limit is too restrictive.

On top of a great PvP experience the customization and plethora of weapons and armor make this such a huge step up from the old days of halo PvP. Do I think Destiny is a bad game? No its ok, is not really all that bad, controls are outstanding the maps are full of really nice details and look beautiful, compared to other FPS style games this one rates high, but that's not all Destiny claimed to offer players. Destiny claimed to offer players a massive RPG style open world that expended over the planets, if claimed to offer us a game that we could play on for countless hours over a period expanding years, leaving us to explore our imagination and image the prospect of a truly ground breaking in a world we could explore and pick up countless side missions, at least that's what we was lead to believe, so despite been a decent FPS with nice maps, we are all disappointed with the lacking these extra ground breaking elements we where lead to believe Destiny would offer.

To sum it up, I was expecting a much more rewarding RPG style world worth exploring, where I could not only shoot my enemy's, like in any other FPS, but also discover tons of interesting loot, explore and discover more in depth lore, interact with friendly NPC to unlock new missions and sub story lines, like you would get from open world RPG games, this is where Destiny fails, anyone who was drawn into buying the game based on the assumption this is what the game had to offer is naturally going to be very disappointed because this side of the game is a non existent marketing joke that appears only to have been created by hype to sell more copies of the game as it strikes the interest of RPG players who in many cases may have no interest in a new FPS, and those players will be the most let down by this game, because destiny fails offer any of those things, the story when thrown at a RPG player is boring, the looting when thrown at an RPG player is unsatisfying, friendly NPC contact is non existent.

The open world is nothing more than a set number of different maps you have to select to be dropped into making the different planet aspect pointless, I honestly think that Pandora from Borderlands is a far better map of exploration than there entire Destiny universe, and there is this games biggest downfall, its not ground breaking as it claims Borderlands 1 and 2 both already gave us a ground breaking RPG/FPS game and although you could argue Destiny expanded slightly on that gene in some aspects as far as the tree levelling system goes and the inclusion of different combinations of body armour, its hardly anything I would call ground breaking, and thanks to its uninteresting story and lack of rewarding loot, if you class this game as the same category as the Borderlands franchise, then its not even the most enjoyable game in its gene.

Unfortunately, Destiny only gives the illusion of having these components and doesn't deliver them very well.
There is nothing new and groundbreaking in the FPS aspect of this game - in fact, most of the guns feel like recycled CoD guns with a sci-fi skin. This is disappointing after the variety of guns that the Halo universe introduced (Bungie made a lot of guns for this game, but too many feel and work exactly the same). Loot is not very well fleshed out for a game that promised to bring loot a new importance. Even uncommon, rare, and legendary loot don't push any new boundaries or mechanics - they work and feel very similar to the common loot drops in the world.

While the maps look great and the graphics are beautiful, the worlds just don't feel very interesting or inspired. Multiplayer is a mess - no matchmaking is a real problem. Bungie wants you team up with friends, which is great - when everyone's schedules are able to be worked out. But what about those times when I just want to tackle some bosses or harder content without a friend online? The Crucible PvP is fun at its core, but after playing a few matches it's quickly realized that there is very little depth to it. The story is not the highlight here, but having said that, I'm really unsure what the highlight of this game really is. The marketing, perhaps?

Destiny could be called, "Destiny: Halo Evolved". It's like if Borderlands and Guild Wars 2 (two games that I like) had a baby, that union would produce Destiny.

The game plays well, there's lots of cool loot, levelling, good grinding - you can easily lose hours in their world (and I plan to do so this weekend). But, as at least one user review has pointed out (and rightly so),

But, as at least one user review has pointed out (and rightly so), community and communication is very much lacking. I haven't been able to form or join a Strike Team since launch, there are way too many loan wolf players who are grinding and aren't looking for any substantial interaction with others. This is a very common problem in multiplayer games today that unfortunately Destiny has not yet managed to overcome. I was looking forward to Destiny since its announcement because it gave the impression that it would give players high incentive to communicate with each other. Not yet. For example, in playing through Devil's Lair last night, I was playing with two other strangers and couldn't convince them to form a strike team despite the fact that we were losing a lot. Destiny's biggest challenge is getting players talking and playing together properly, and I'm hoping they figure out how to do it.

Despite this, Destiny is a high quality title that I am hoping will patch its issues sensibly.

RPG? Protip: Character development involves meaningful choices. There are virtually no RPG elements to this game. You have no skill paths, no influence on the story, and nothing that differentiates you from every other character beyond what gear you're wearing.

Sure, you can choose slight variations on skills as you level up - like do you want your grenade area to be bigger, or maybe have it deploy mini-grenades. That's not character development people. Yes, at higher levels you can choose the ONE sub-class or not. Woohoot.

So, it's a pretty decent FPS shooter with an okay story and Peter Dinklage mailing in some voice acting as the Ghost. But it is NOT an MMO or an RPG by any definition of those terms.

This is a great game. As a stand alone co-op campaign, it probably would rate an 8-8.5 with me, but when you add in the competitive multiplayer and the fluidity between the two, it has to get a 9 or 9.5. Your character, gear, and levels move between the two. You are actually progressing no matter what you do on the game. Keep in mind, though, that there are MMO elements in here. This is not a COD campaign. There is grinding for gear and rare loot. This game is meant to play for weeks. If you hated Borderlands, there are going to be elements in this game you won't like. We all are different and people who don't enjoy the genres Destiny mashes together may not be a fan. However, this game is an 8 at least, even to people who don't love the genres. It is a very solid and expansive journey in both the PvP and PvE sectors. It's worth a buy and please disregard the 0s and 2s. They are just absurd and are the product of trolls.

This game is a perfect game for a casual gamer, or a lover of all genres such as myself. It has every element you could ask for in a video game, and integrates the "Pick up and play" aspect that you can expect from games like GTA V, Skyrim, WoW, etc. If you want to create an abstract player focused more on melee, you can. If you want to create a stealth orientated sniper, you can. If you want an all around shooter, you can have it. This game is about choice, and how you want to play it is completely up to you. The beautifully designed levels allow for the ability to snipe from far or run in guns blazing. The ability to call in a land speeder (Sparrow) at the press of a button, then jolt off and triple jump up to a ledge to surprise an unsuspecting enemy allows for the "Unreal Tournament" speed orientated game play some people prefer. The numerous obstacles and hideaway coves allow for the sneaky sniper to duck out of the way and take enemies from afar. The flawless blend from multi-player to single player and vice versa make the game seem to have it all. It may be aesthetic, but the "Orbit mode" mode/level selection is really what creates this flawless blend.

I was suspecting there would be a terribly awful amount of server lag and countless problems with the initial week or so until everyone settled down. I was pleasantly surprised, there were no issues at all! A little bit of waiting time, but nothing to really even take notice of. Bungie/Activision has really set the bar for other games considering the amount of sales they had. No more excuses for day 1 lag or server overload, especially considering there isn't a monthly fee and the ENTIRE game is online.

Overall this game is great, it TOUCHES all aspects perfectly. It may not be as in depth with character customization as Skyrim, it may not be as open world and exporable as GTA V, it may not have the weapon and power options of WoW, it may not have the number of weapons as Borderlands, or the multiplayer FPS of halo (Although it's CLOSE here) but it blends all of these perfectly to appeal to every audience. It is not a Halo clone and it is not an MMO, sorry fanboys. It gave everything it promised and delivered an experience that should keep me busy for a long time, especially considering the DLC and updates we know it will have in the near future.

I've just reached level 15 out of 20 on my first character (Hunter, for those who care) and I'm more than happy with the purchase so far based on the overall tightness of the controls, the beautiful environments, and the hybrid MMO/FPS they've crafted.

The advertising for the game seems to bill it equally as MMO and online FPS, however I feel that Destiny has managed to craft something a little different that may not be a killer app the way that Halo was, but definitely introduces some neat ideas that would love to catch on. In particular I enjoy how well the whole package is tied together. from one menu you can choose to do PvE content, Co-op, or PVP and they all feed into one another so that you never feel that your time invested is wasted or segmented from the rest. I often skip PvP when I play MMORPGs because it is isolated (Typically) from the PvE content and it feels like I'm trying to progress two different characters in very similar games, which I don't enjoy. Instead, you earn great experience points, armor, as well as additional PvP rewards from participating in the 4 PvP modes, and all of that progress helps you in the "single-player" game as well. This, to me, is the biggest selling point of Destiny because the other good points of the game are self-evident. It looks great, controls great, etc. But since the game is trying to convince us all that it is different, I felt it was important to focus on what those differences are.

Besides the Hybrid PvE/PVP content being done well, i really enjoy the way they have designed leveling up, and the separate classes. At level up you're given a skill point to distribute, and your skills screen is separated into columns, although it just looks like one big block of cubes. For example, while you might have 40 squares on the screen, the top row of 5 would be completely different skills or bonuses and anything below would be related. It could be a different grenade style (Grenades are on a cool-down timer rather than a lootable item, also) or it could be a stat boost that has trade-offs. You can freely trade between the skills that have trade-offs or offer competing benefits as you unlock them, as well.

Depending on the rarity of your items, you also have skills on your weapons and armor that get unlocked. For example, on a Blue quality drop, you have a similar "Skill Tree" where you use the weapon or item enough and it earns XP that unlocks the ability to pay for upgrades with in-game currency. This could be a better scope, or a more interesting feature like improving stability the longer it is fired, or increases reload speed after an emptied clip.

The classes (Titan, Hunter, Warlock) all have a unique look, and have a unique "Special Weapon" category for signature arms (Sniper for hunter, for example), and their armor all has a unique look that reveals their class.

The story thus far is completely forgettable in it's current state, but I don't think it's too late to salvage that. The world itself is interesting enough, and I think that given the resources they've been allowed to this project, Bungie is more than capable of taking gamer feedback and doing something constructive. Will it be done? Probably not. Could it be done? Definitely, the foundations are there.

    Now, on to some negatives.

Each PvE mission is represented on a map of a planet you fly to (You visit multiple). And while the locations on the map are different, you always seem to start in the same location. I believe I have figured out that the map is representative of the "Zone" a la traditional MMO style, but it is misleading from my expectations of a new map, or at least a new spawn point. When you're on the moon, you're always spawning in the same place. You will pass familiar locations, places you've been before on other missions, but will go to an entirely new place, or return to see the effects of other things you did in a location. I think they could represent this better since the screen you choose your mission at shows locations that look like they're very very far apart, but in reality you're looking at the map of a zone, and starting at a static point before moving to the location of the mission.

Missions are very very very repetitive. They are always "Go here, trip the invisible wire and enemies pour in. Work your way to a piece of tech that Peter Dinklage wants to hack into, hold enemies off until he's done. Repeat." However... it's a shooter. I wasn't expecting anything revolutionary, and honestly I am content with the host of new abilities I get from leveling up that stay a bit more grounded than the silliness that Borderlands sticks to. If you're expecting to pick up a new weapon every five minutes with sticky bullets that explode enemies into chunky acid that sets other enemies on fire... this is not the reality of Destiny. It is a much more tame, and grounded experience in regards to the type of gameplay Borderlands introduced us to.

The hype for this game was a total over reaction, bought the limited edtion and the strategy guide, i feel so ripped off. the game is the same thing over and over again in every level, go through the same landscape, find something to deploy a ghost on, fight off enemies, repeat. VERY POOR

Where is all the content and vast exicting world i was promised? the landscapes are the same in every mission, every corridor is the same, on every map there are the same planes laying around, the same boring AI - who are dumb as well by the way. and the missions are all the same. very disapointed with this.

I want to feel the love for this game but i just cant. The game was over hyped to say the least, starting the game up i was impressed, as the graphics are beautiful, but thats it. the rest of the experience is BORING.

Just finished this game, and have to say im not pleased with it overall, the story missions was all the same, start off in the same setting, go to the same place through the same enemies and face a slightly different mini boss at the end (none of which were hard to kill even on hard) - and i cant really say i fully grasped what the story was about. there is no narrative to the story, ifJust finished this game, and have to say im not pleased with it overall, the story missions was all the same, start off in the same setting, go to the same place through the same enemies and face a slightly different mini boss at the end (none of which were hard to kill even on hard) - and i cant really say i fully grasped what the story was about. there is no narrative to the story, if this cost 500M dollars to cost i would expect a lot more cut scenes, not to the extent that they become intrusive but i can count on 2 hands how many times i saw a cut scene that helped explained what was going on. the only thing i will praise is the graphics. although some textures that were a bit far away looked very very blurry at times. the online is OK but i worry that it will become like titanfall - boring after a week.

Bungie said this has a 10 year life span, if my memory serves me right, Halo 2 come out in 2004 - ten years ago, ALOT has happened in the gaming industry since then and i wouldnt be surprised to see many of the current games gone within a year (MAX)

Not sure where all the money was spent, maybe marketing? but the next big thing aaa game its definitely not. Borderlands ugly sister is what it is, a boring shooter that will easily be forgotten very quickly. Back to bf4 then i suppose. sigh.

The game is great. Not that it doesn't have any flaws, the story has almost no continuation, and is very generic. But the game plays like a dream, multiplayer is engaging and fun. Getting new weapons and gear is welcomed. The game will evolve no question about it, still waiting for an economic system, bidding house, the ability to sell equipment straight out, etc. As i said the gameThe game is great. If you wanted halo, buy an Xbox. Bungie showed you their game and they sold you exactly that. How can you be disappointed when you've already seen what's to come? Destiny is a well built game evenly balanced between open world, campaign and a sturdy multiplayer. Maybe you should know what you buy because this is what it was always going to be. And that only leaves you to blame yourself for buying a game which wasn't right for you.

Don't throw off any potential buyers because you can't make decisions. That's just being a dick head...

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
