it's basically just one big grind. same hordes of enemies over and over. story doesnt matter since their isnt much of one. its basically Borderlands without the charm.
on the plus side the music is good, art is absolutely gorgeous however you will be seeing the same exact things over and over again. .

As expected, this much-hyped game turned out to be "just another boring FPS MMO", with the standard set of issues - poor loot drops, incredibly boring, tedious and repetitive missions, an almost total lack of "story", a short trip to the Level 20 cap, no generic chat function (other than set team), and worst of all, no open world.

Yes, this is a very linear game, which is the antithesis of an MMO, and probably its greatest failing. It also smells of "pay DLC", with Bungie opening up new linear parts of the game for $$$ - why give an open world for free when you can micro-transaction buyers to death?

Very disappointing and I already traded my copy in while it's still worth something. Once they start piling up at the game shop, you might not be able to give them away.

Absolute disappointment. The gameplay is really the only thing that's here, theirs no story, and within the first few hours the gameplay becomes tedious as all you do is grind. Nothing of what they promised and implied would be in the game is in it. if your looking for that its probably a 0/10, if you look at it as a game that didn't promise that, its a 4/10.

Having played Last of Us to death on ps3 i deceided to dive straight in and start playing "Destiny". Now, let me tell you the good stuff first, since there is unfortunetly so little of it. As i was used to ps3 graphics and never played a ps4 before, this game visual presentation was earth shattering . Everything is absolutely gorgeous in this game. Truly "next gen". The textures used are insanely detailed, with beautiful lighting effects. Everything just is what you always hoped gaming would be one day since you first played that humble little Nintendo in 1985. and everything is running silky smooth with no fps slowdowns once. Amazing indeed.
Next Gunplay. Absolutely nailed it. Best gunplay i have had since, well, ever on any Playstation. That combined with the new ps4 controller and you have gameplay as smooth as butter. I really understand now why some Xbox only gamers have had so much love for Halo. Shooting and aiming guns is very satisfying and well above the standard.
The last good point i would like to point out is the amazing Hollywood blockbuster style soundtrack. You just have to hear it.
And that is about all the positive stuff i can tell you about this game.

The negative list is quite a bit longer s i am sorry to say.
The story is pure rubbish. Pure and utter crap, scraped from the bottom of the cheapest cliche barrel they could find. Let me give you an example here: the good guys are "The Light", and the bad guys "The Darkness". Yeah, no kidding. "The Darkness" is then sub divided in even more cliche sub factions such as "the Hive", "The Fallen" etc. This in itself would not be such a problem if there was actually a story to follow, but there isn't. To actually learn something about these factions, or anything for that matter, you will have to pause the game and head to a website and read the lore there. Serious, that is what you have to do. hardly any ingame story. And since i simply refused to get my story from a website out of priciple, all i was left with was basically a polished up 2014 version of space invaders. What little story there is ingame however is the worst of the worst. It explains nothing. You where dead, but was revived somhow after a few hundred years, yet no one bothers to explain it to me how or why. Later on in the game a character pops up and starts talking to me as if we know each other, but i never have seen her in my game once. Says she is too busy to explain or some crap like that and vanished. lol WTF?? She did give a gun when i "finished" the game though, which was nice i guess. And it goes on and on. The story simply makes no sense and is a huge let down. I actually think they would have been better off just cutting the story alltogether and make this a straight up hardcore shooter.

Then there is the voice acting. And boy, is it bad.
Bungie somehow managed to grab everyones favorite member of the Lannister family, Tyrion, aka Peter Dinkelage. And i am sorry to say, he blew it, and he blew it big time. I dont know if this is because of a lack of directing, or because he simply sucks as a voice actor. But he is so bad i wished he would stfu allready.
He plays this "ghost" which looks a bit like "Wheatley" from Portal 2. And he must surely be one of the most annoying game characters ever made by man. Play it, and you will find out because i just cannot bring myself to be so critical of the excelent Tyrion. Lets just say Peter Dinkelage is no Ashley Johnson / Troy Baker when it comes to voice over work.

Mission design is pathetic. Simplel as that. There are literally 2 "quests" in this game. Kill wave after wave, also known as point defense, horde mode etc. and there is kill the boss, which is pure bullet sponge tank and spank crap. That is all there is too it. No escort, no chases no nothing. It is embarassing to be honest.
Loot is hardly dropped by mobs make it even more boring than it already is, so you need to grind reps to get gear. There are a few daily "quests" to help you along though to obtain it a little faster. Fun quests such as KILL 10.000 guardians, no kidding. Make no mistake, this is grinding original everquest style.
It was after i read that quest btw that i ejected the game and traded it in for something else.

TLTR; this game is a complete outhouse of a mess. Stay away

This game is incredibly average. The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).

This game is incredibly average. The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).
Every mission is literally exactly the same, land on a planet, fight to a secluded area, have your Ghost activate something then fight off waves of enemies, then after the waves a boss either spawns, or you head a little further in and fight a boss. That is it... every single mission in the storyline is exactly that, and the boss fights aren't even fun because there are no mechanics to it, you essentially hide behind something when they attack and then step out to fire.
Then you have the side mission of which there are only 4 variations, you either have to kill a bunch of enemies, kill a specific enemy, go somewhere and scan something, or kill a bunch of enemies and gather a certain item which is essentially the same as just killing a bunch of enemies.
The weapon and loot system is basically the same as borderlands except with at best a 10th of the variety. There are 9 weapon types, many of which are very similar, and within those types there is absolutely no variation.
Now you would think the online play would be redeeming, after all a game is much more fun with more people. Except the people you see playing have virtually no way to contact you or speak to you. There is no point in teaming up to do a mission since they are so incredibly easy, even "hard" mode isn't that much of a challenge.
The only online feature I enjoyed was the "strike" or dungeon system which was kind of fun because some bosses were vaguely difficult, but they did follow the same lack of mechanics as other bosses.

Pvp is not half as enjoyable as the mega-fans would have you believe. I think it would be better if there were more of it in the open world, but instead you get put into a limited arena. Once there you will notice how horribly unbalanced combat is. Since a titan has more survivability and there is virtually no difference in damage between the classes since everyone uses the same pool of weapons you either play as titan or die. Hunters can occasionally do well, but thats mostly because of the grenade that homes in when enemies get close and the ridiculously overpowered throwing knife which no other class has anything remotely comparable. Also forget about getting any kills without a sniper rifle, but thats pretty similar to many online shooters.
The world looks kind of pretty, but the graphics look more like mid last gen than early current gen. So the area you actually play in can look pretty dull, but the backdrop is beautiful.
The vehicle system is weak at its best moments, and I feel pretty ripped off with that crappy sparrow from pre-ordering.
Honestly it isn't too awful, the gameplay is moderately fun, but it is nothing new and personally i believe Halo did it better. It helps that I have a couple friends with the game and we play online on occasion.

I promise I am not just someone who is pissed that the game did not live up to the hype, but they definitely made some big promises on the originality and vast content and we have seen none of that. It isn't even like I haven't given the game a decent try, believe me when I say that I really, reeeeaaallllyyy, wanted to love this game. I played a Warlock all the way to 20 and have about 5 levels into a titan, I might work on a hunter to see if it is any better, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As for my particular score, I personally believe it should have a 6 or 7, but somebody has to counter the massive influx of undeserved perfect scores when at the very best this game might get an 8, and only if you had incredibly low expectations and very little experience with shooters.

Update: In a continued attempt to enjoy this game I played more. I had previously hit level 20, but other than a Mars Strike I didn't do much playing after level 20, so I decided to try some vanguard strikes and some other stuff. That is why I lowered the score which was previously a 5/10. All the people saying the game really opens up after level 20 either haven't hit level 20 or are total idiots. What happens is you get access to vanguard strikes which are essentially the same strikes you have been doing but with higher level enemies... that is it, no new content, the loot is awful (I did the level 20 strike and got a level 16 piece of gear), and in general the game actually got worse.

Now many people are saying that the game is going to get so much better with dlc and all of this other junk. I for one did not pay full price for less than half of a game, and I resent being required to pay $35 for what is bound to be another small portion of said game.

If it were possible to get my money back from Bungie I would.

I wish i could return it. I bought the "legendary edition" for 100 bucks - cuz i LOVED the beta. Well, not much to add to the beta. Then in the end, it's so generic. What really bugs me - when you're in a "no spawn zone" and die....you have to hear the peter dinklage voice monologue allllll over again. Gets old fast.

I cry because destiny is a game that had epic potential... but WASTED it on a weak story, repetitive (at best) gameplay, and Peter Dinklage opening doors for you and giving pointless monologues that serve no purpose other than to make you hate the loading screens. The story is filled with SO much holes it's not funny, and Activison is now using DLC as an excuse to fill the holes. But the worst problem is being forced to play with a network connection. For the past 2 days, the PSN has been hacked by a group of dumbass 12 year old kids known only as the 'lizard squad', and even when they're done with their DDoS attacks, SONY has to patch everything that went wrong. Search up '#PSN' on Google/twitter and see what I mean. This is especially sad because this means you can't play destiny if you wanted to. Don't blame Bungie for that, internet, the lizard squad did it.

Overall, disappointing. Some missions are fun, yet still repetitive, and I've heard the dark below isn't doing all too well. Let's hope destiny 2 is good... if there even will BE a destiny 2.

Daily missions and strikes are all from campaign mission. Everything is a constant grind to grab the best gear to level up. Fighting low levels yield the same results as fighting high level bosses? The abilities and skills were pretty bland. Health and shield system is definitely ripped off Halo. No single player option. High level strikes require players to find their own groups of six which is annoying. There are other problems that I may have missed, but **** it. I am believe that this game is not worth the 60$. I'm not a massive FPS fan in the first place and needed the game to give me something to NEED to play it. Destiny wasn't what I was hoping for, also I couldn't help but compare it to the other games that I was playing at the same time which were PS3 reboots of Tomb Raider and Last of Us. Both of those games made me want to keep playing. I thought a Next-Gen 'Masterpiece' should have done the same.

i have this very minute finished the game and i can assure you its a huge let down, i had to actually YouTube the ending to make sure it was the same thing as i just witnessed, its the same concept as every other. You get on your sparrow ride through, get to a gate deploy ghost, he does his business, fight some enemies, go through a gate, kill some more goblin robots, then you are presented with fighting 3 of the boss's (all seperately) with the yellow writing (you will know what i mean if youve played it) and they are the EXACT same as the boss's from the previous level and i think they are also EASIER to kill, once youve done that the mission ending timer counts down, you go back to the tower and speak to the speaker, he does a little speech , THATS IT, not even any end credits!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is the EXACT same as every other boring level.

the only thing i like about the game is the visuals and the levelling up but thats all pointless now, unless you fancy doing the same boring stuff in crucible over and over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game while I think is great in many ways just falls short of what it was trying to be. This game tries to be a FPSMMO. While I think the gun play and mechanics are amazing for a shooter. This game falls short terribly on the MMO portion. The backstory and story itself is completely non existent. Some of the story you can get to by going outside the game itself to read on Bungie's website. The exotic weapons all have a story outside of the game where you can read about the weapons and stories with them. Why not include that in game to add to the immersion and excitement of getting a weapon. Playing through the campaign is saddening. It's the same exact thing over and over again. Deploy your ghost and defend him from the countless waves of enemies. In the story itself you feel no connection at all to the guardian you are playing or the city and Traveler you are defending. There are not enough cinematic story telling cut scenes either to keep you awed throughout your experience in game. Even in the raids in this game you don't feel as if a story is being told while you are progressing through the raid itself. There is no in game match making or in game chat besides randomly messaging people on PSN that you see in game but with typical MMO ethics that is not a good practice to do. In order to find a group for something you must once again leave the game and go to either Destinytracker, PlanetDestiny, or Reddit to find groups for raids and other end game activities. PvP is the only thing that is keeping this game alive for me. But even that has its drawbacks with the constant one shot barrage of ranged shotguns out there. Expand

Generally too easy to kill other players
After match rewards are distributed arbitrarily- skill does not necessarily = reward
Lack of relative skill to get kills coupled w/ balancing issues discourages competitive fps nature
    Various connectivity issues

Mediocre. Looks and plays like a last gen game. Halo 4 on 360 looks way better than this. Go play that game instead. Avoid Destiny. Its not a good game

Get fetch quest, run and gun with other players to end point where you can only play on your own and can't respawn and defend against waves of enemies. Repeat.

This is such a disapointment. No, worse, it's a trap. I loved Halo, and thought Bungie could pull off another great game. But, through the amazing graphics, music and great gunplay comes a very basic problem that makes all the good things null and void: repetitive gameplay. The same quest is given over and over again. Also, like so many others have pointed out, the storytelling is bad. The premise is good, and I think it could have been a wonderful tale here, but it's told in such incoherent way and tiny pieces. It's just not a complete game. I suspect later add ons will make it better, but for a full game price, this is simply not good and very very bad value for money. Sorry. Expand

First a little about me, I've never played Borderlands and I did not play the Call of Duty series so this review will not compare the game to either. I have however been an avid Halo player playing every single game since the original back on the Xbox. Based on how the Halo series developed and how Bungie put a lot of time into building out the series. They had established themselves even before Halo with Myth and Oni...with that being said there had been a lot of expectation with Destiny because Bungie was behind it. Unfortunately, I feel where the positive aspect of this review ends.
To say that Destiny was slightly a let down is understatement...its rather a big disappointment. Its certainly not deserving of a zero but far from perfection or even as was advertised a "game changing experience" I should clarify "game changing might be accurate if isolationism is an experience. The game plays more like a Beta in my opinion than a finished product. It lacks clear direction, i.e. a FPS that tries to play like an RPG...or an RPG that tries to play like an FPS which one is it? The result is a product that fails at its attempts to meet both. It actually isn't surprising to me while Bungie itself has had an impeccable history in terms of game development, no company can remain at the top forever. In the same way that Square was regarded as the "it" company with respect to RPGs to feel from grace...most interestingly enough after its merger with Enix. Bungie entered into a 10 year publishing agreement with Activision Blizzard...a company that itself has produced a variety of games but far from masterpieces. Games like Diablo, WOW, Starcraft and COD are all great series in their own regards and have certainly appealed to their niche groups however I would argue that they aren't masterpieces. Destiny however marketed itself to be just that. It clearly borrows from its Halo roots with tight controls and beautiful environments aspects that I can’t dispute that particular attention to detail had been put into however the game (at least at launch) is clearly missing things that make it..well enjoyable. The thing I loved MOST about the Halo series is that I had options. Options to go online and play multiplayer with random individuals, tackle missions, objectives, pop off zombies or just enjoy raw undisputed red vs blue but I also had the option to tackle on the main campaign. Now here is what I will say about Bungie in terms of storytelling, they’ve never truly been great at it. After several years of playing Halo there are obvious parts of the story that if I hadn’t done my own individual research, read about online or gathered from graphic novels/books I would be completely clueless to the story. I will say that the story of Master Chief had certainly expanded from Halo 1 up through Halo 3 (when it was in Bungie’s hands) so with that being said perhaps the same will come of Destiny.

All in all Destiny isn’t a bad game, but its certainly not a memorable one and at the moment not one that I feel I want to go back playing over and over again. I know there are players that enjoy the mundane task of grinding thru levels and levels over and over but for the casual player that likes to pick up and title and looks some substance I feel the game is well quite lacking. Honestly a shooter that caught me by surprise in terms of story and gameplay was Wolfenstien…I was SHOCKED at how good the game was and how much the series had progressed from the days of old and despite it not looking as “Nextgen” as games like Rome or the Last of Us I felt it was a great FPS. All in all I still have Farcry 4 which right now is looking to have lots of potential, than again it wasn’t marketed as being a “gamechanger”. Hopefully the marketing department will now learn to choose their words a little more carefully next time as they have the potential to alienate their demographics and ultimately hurt developer’s credibility in the long term. Will Destiny hurt Bungie that still remains to be seen? Can it recover? Considering they stated they will be dedicating 10 years to series only time will tell.

Well after getting to level 18. I've decided to give this game a 6.5. Nothing fantastic but some goo qualities. online pvp and pve is enjoyable. Story is non-existent. game play is usually smooth. graphics are good. nothing revolutionary. over all okay but way too over hyped and very repetitive.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
