I am therefore all about delivery games and this one blows your mind with the storyline, gameplay, and the characters. The atmosphere can be extremely stressful/suspenseful when it needs to be and also incredibly relaxing. The landscapes are beautiful. When you are hiking, the best part is getting a good view, listening to some good music and seeing a storm rolling in. That is this game. Expand

yeah.. i actually played it back in 2019. but never came to give a score for it. today i randomly remembered it and wanted to play it all once again. i know its too late for it and nobody cares but hey. i just can't stop admiring this game and i gotta pay my respect here.

Metta meditation is a type of Buddhist meditation. In Pali — a language that's closely related to Sanskrit and spoken in northern India — “metta” means positive energy and kindness toward others. The practice is also known as loving-kindness meditation. basically, metta is the general love towards the world itself.
and now, i do also believe kojima calling his genre of game a "strand-type game" was indeed very cheesy way for him to marketing his game since we can say this genre existed thanks to souls-like genre and my beloved, Dark souls series. but stil, calling it strand-type or souls-like game,
both of these genres have something very special for the modern society. i have played many games in my life, and i have never seen a game execpt dark souls, DS and disco elysium does such thing. to implant a Mindset within the player. an idea, a way of thinking...
death stranding, in my humble opinion, teaches you the metta meditation mindset.
and i get it. you may not like the game. but if you have experienced loneliness, depression and isolation in your life, trust me. just try it. you may appreciate and get what i mean.
this game is made for this audience.
in this game, you are alone. but yet you are not.
you are alone but in your path, people have passed it.
you are alone but you give kindness to the world around you
and also you get kindness from others in tough situations
    this is love.
this is a meditation. you are all by yourself, just "walking", feeling each step you take, and on your way, you give help and you get help. this is life. this is love and kindness. and thats why its so special.
death stranding is an underrated gem. and yeah, its not for everyone and i get it if you don't like it.
but man, if you actually could appreciate it for what it is...

im a hog for kojima games. this is no exception. many see the gameplay as a big downside and i understand that, but personally, I really liked the minimalist design and simply enjoying the environments while walking a massive expanse. not only that but the story is as goofy as youd expect from kojima.

" Death Stranding está criando um novo gênero de jogo e, portanto, abre seu próprio caminho para experiências mais interativas. É um trabalho corajoso graças à sua novidade, que felizmente não é um direito de se gabar para seus criadores, como pode parecer, mas um excepcional título que recompensará os corajosos que o jogarem.

I loved this game. it's so hard to think Kojima went through the length to make something like this in this day and age.

I adored Sam's relationship with other characters. I loved that the gameplay is not scripted and total a walk in the park. I love that it makes my heart beat faster and faster in fights. There were so many close calls.

Not only it has a casting made of lots of actors and people that I always been a fan of, it also introduced me to a great piece of storytelling with an immersive world with characters you just can’t help but love. Easily has the best peaks I’ve ever seen. The soundtrack is so so so amazing and the visuals are too. Cliff’s reveal to Sam and Die-Hardman’s confession to Sam are the best scenes and acting I’ve seen. The only bad thing I see about it is that the replay value is not there. I would not play this again even if I got payed. Way too long and it felt repetitive at times, but it was 100% worth completing.

It's a long, arduous process that's made difficult by the weight of your cargo taking a toll on your balance and stability, as well as the path forward being rife with obstacles like highwaymen, destructive rainfall, supernatural entities, and even the terrain itself. While new items and features are introduced at a steady pace to ensure things get easier as you progress, traveling across the vast, empty expanses for miles on end doesn't necessarily become any more exciting. As a result, this is very much one of those love it or hate it kind of things.

I can see the game being a tedious slog for some and a straight shot of melatonin for others. There is an audience for this though. Personally, I was enamored with the story, themes, and overall originality of the mechanics. I enjoyed the sense of serenity that came from the slow-paced traversal so much that I was actually bothered whenever action would take center stage. I had no problem with the various enemy camps spread across the gargantuan map as I could deal or not deal with those as I saw fit. However, at several points you're forced into boss battles and the coverless third-person shooter system makes them more of a chore than anything. I was impressed with the scale of each encounter, but the game is definitely at its worst whenever guns are involved.

The online component makes the journey a little less lonely. You won't get to actually interact with another person, but structures built by other players will appear in your world to act as helping hands. Coming across a bridge or zip-line someone left behind not only makes your trek less of a hassle, but also allows you to feel strangely connected to individuals you'll never see. These random acts of kindness inspired me to not take up my own placed ladders or climbing ropes after using them with the hopes that they might prove useful to anybody else came that way next. Sweetening all of this is the "likes" system which allows you to award others with bonus experience points at the touch of a button whenever they've built something that's pleased you. Seeing that somebody not only used a road or safe house I crafted, but saw fit to reward me for it always brought a smile to my face. It's easily the best multiplayer experience I've ever had.

This is another meticulously crafted work of singular vision from the biggest auteur in the gaming industry. It transported me back to the PS2 era where you could find titles like Mr. Mosquito and Katamari Damacy that were entirely their own unique things. Because of this I believe Kojima delivered on his boasts of having created a completely new genre. I've certainly never played anything like this before. It's the kind of radical experimentation we need nowadays, even if the end results always end up being this divisive. While I definitely have a high affinity for the game I must admit not everyone will be as enthralled with it as I was. So despite the high score I'm giving it my ultimate recommendation is that you find a way to try it before you buy or even rent it in order to make sure it's for you.

I found it tense and fun. Great game, great story and soundtrack. The graphics are insane. It's very weird, but if Kojima didn't make a weird game, than it would be really unexpected

This type of gameplay isn't for everyone- if you're looking for a mindless shooter or hack-n-slasher, you probably won't like it, as it requires a bit of thinking and planning. But in objective terms, Death Stranding is in a class of its own.

First I'll list the bad: some parts can feel like a slog. There is some repetition between missions, as they all involve going somewhere, picking something up, and bringing it somewhere else. But that's the basic archetype of almost every video game. Besides that, there are times when it feels too easy or too hard, or a lot of info is dumped on you at once. The story is confusing, especially at the beginning, but all is revealed sooner or later. More impulsive players won't have the patience to sit through the cutscenes and dialogue, of which there is a lot.

There's much more good than bad. The world feels massive and realistic, the original score suits each scene or level incredibly well, and the controls are impeccably ergonomic. The graphics are nothing revolutionary, but are still very good, and caused no lag on my standard PS4. The story is creative to say the least, as are the gameplay mechanics, some of which don't exist outside of this game.

Overall, I think Death Stranding deserves an 85-90% score. Very few titles display this level of passion, creativity, and a mastery over UI.

Death Stranding is not a game I could ever unequivocally recommend, and I’m sure many will be put off within the first few hours. Personally however I enjoyed the challenge of delivering packages to increasingly remote locations, and the excellent acting and soundtrack perfectly complimented the unique, interesting and sometimes downright bonkers plot. The ‘strand’, system in which players can cooperate to develop infrastructure such as roads and bridges, also adds an extra layer to the game.

At the end of the day I think you just have to try it for yourself, I’m glad I did!

Death Stranding will start to whisper, "come baaaaack." It really is a magnetic game. It's hard to explain. Go redbox it and give it a good 5 hours. It's like a slow starting book, but then you'll blink and be hooked.

Look at it this way, instead of approaching this as "playing a video game," approach it like you are sitting down to watch a Netflix series (a trippy one, like "Dark"), that you get to interact with. I've read people say the story sucks. While there are some premises to the story that are silly, overall, I'm sucked in.

I CAN'T believe how interesting the game mechanics are. On paper, I thought I'd go nuts. After getting past the learning curve, I really got into it. Do your self a favor and don't pass judgement on this game until you are a couple hours past CHAPTER 3. Read up online on tactics to blow through the first 3 chapters ASAP, and then it really picks up.

Because of the reviews, by the time I started, I went in with low expectations, so I'm sure that only helped me. Come to find out, it's not as bad as some peeps are making it out to be. It truly is unlike anything out there, but on the flip side, it truly isn't for everybody.

All those COD & Fortnite Players are funny, those kind of games aren't for you guys. Sorry.

Edit: After finishing this game, watching some youtube videos in which you can see how many flaws the story has, it isn't that good to me anymore but still an amazing game, because it is unique. Not a 10, but 8-9.

It's "oldschool", where you have to think a bit about what you are going against in this particular mission, instead of just rushing in. I guess oldschool gamers will appreciate it more than the younger gamers.

    The game has it's flaws:
    - boss fights are not that challenging
    - the edge is taken off a bit when you are equipped with weapons
    - the game is linear and doesn't that much encourage you to do side quests, as they seem unworthy, for the most part

    But it has it's pro's:
    - visuals
    - cast
    - story (for the most part)
    - music (!)
    - the mechanics
    - being a completely different thing

Death Stranding shines as something different, althrough very much Kojim-ish to it's core. It's a welcome breath of fresh air blown straight into Konami's face.

Instead of buying a 10th FIFA or 20th COD - buy Death Stranding. If you won't like, at least you will experience something else. And that's always worth your $ and time.

Some will find the gameplay boring because large parts of it are traversing from point A to point B, and the occasional stealth or combat sections are serviceable but nothing special.

I personally loved it because many of its mechanics were intrinsically rewarding to me. Long walks with beautiful scenery, a brilliant score scattered throughout the adventure and an inventory management system with a lot of depth made the journey very enjoyable for the full 100 hours it took me to get the platinum. The story is very good, though despite the solid acting and notable cast, the writing could be better and the plot doesn't really begin to click until fairly late into the game. Nevertheless the pay-off is spectacular.

Most of the time you will be trekking long paths with nothing and no one accompanying you, and the brilliant music starting at just the right time can feel like a hard earned reprieve from the bitter loneliness, like someone has just put their arm around you when you haven't felt human interaction for months on end.

I don't wholly agree with people branding this a 'walking simulator', but there are elements of simulation which more closely resemble a 'delivery logistics simulator'. If you are into this type of inventory micromanagement and a high degree of choice in how you approach these deliveries, no other game does this better. From choosing gear, equipment, how pieces of cargo are arranged on your back, which route to take, where to strategically take shelter from the corrosive rain, how to best avoid enemies and just how much you can carry from A to B. There is a brilliantly subtle risk/reward aspect to each delivery. Do you attempt to take as much cargo as possible over the shortest distance and risk losing or damaging it when encountering enemies, or do you take the longer route and bring sufficient gear to craft shelters along the way, meaning that you can carry less cargo?

The progression is also fantastic, while some portions of the game can feel like a grind especially if going for all the trophies or achievements, this grind is rewarded with cosmetic items, and levelling up all the facilities unlocks aspects of the game intended to make it easier, like vehicles, equipment or materials that can be used to construct structures and roads. By the end of the game, it becomes less of a walking sim and more like you have successfuly built a delivery company from the ground up, your success entirely attributable to the hard work you have put in to get to this place.

I encourage everyone to give this game a try, it's not only unlike anything else you will likely ever play, but on the off chance that any of what I've just described resonates with you, will provide an unforgettable experience.

The backlash this video-game (yes, not a movie!) gets is getting out of hand.

PREMISE: An apocalyptic phenomenon, "Death Stranding", has ruined the world. The dead return as ghastly creatures known as the "BTs", who prey on the living and cause devastating "Voidout" explosions. The once harmless rain is now dubbed as "the Timefall", as it accelerates aging of anything it touches. Traditional communication and transportation has become near impossible thanks "Chiral" contamination.
The USA is now isolated and broken, barely resembling the super power it once was. People have been walled up in cities and smaller prepper bunkers, just out of the harms way. All the essential information and material between the establishments is moved by brave Porters; couriers, who are one part STALKERs, one part mailmen, 100% insane.
You take the role of the Sam Porter Bridges, a lone wolf freelancer famous of his crazy but guaranteed deliveries. He possesses a supernatural capabilities of not only being able to sense the otherwise invisible BTs in his vicinity, but also seemingly return back to the world of the living after death.
After surviving a catastrophic voidout caused by a mysterious incident, he is... "hired"... by the BRIDGES company; the largest surviving faction that hopes to fulfill the late President's final wish and re-connect all the surviving cities across the America, under a single, revolutionary "Chiral Network".
Sam himself has personal matters at stake as well, alongside with a plethora of mysteries concerning the true nature of the Death Stranding.

GAMEPLAY:Death Stranding is a BIG, VARIED game.
One moment, you're playing an open-world adventure / RPG game where you take deliveries from point A to B, trying not only to stay alive but also keep your cargo intact.
The next, you may find yourself stealthing past foes from the world of the living and the dead, potentially escalating the game into hectic action if you screw up.
Soon after, you may find yourself building and repairing structures, establishing routes and laying literal roads, just to make your and your fellow players' lives easier.
While not exactly an online-game, the players are sort of "connected" by their actions in the game world. Once a new area is connected to the Chiral Network, you get to see and interact with the various structures, signs, gear, and even vehicles of the other players (and vise-versa).
Had a nasty, deep river blocking your path earlier? Maybe someone has built a bridge over it, making crossing a breeze! Got a long way to go to and need to lighten your load? Build a remote Post Box, and stash your excess cargo there! Maybe donate some of your extra gear to other players while at it. Gotta to find tons of materials to build an entire highway? Instead of doing it alone, co-operate with the community to finish the taunting task in a few moments! Got ambushed by nasty dangers on your way in to a new area, or found something neat to loot in a remote corner of the world? Place a holographic sign or two to inform your fellow porters about them in advance!
The amount of choices given to you is vast. Little by little you witness the once barren wastelands evolve into bright and (sort of) living world. You truly are connecting with people, and not just with the NPCs!

Finally, the "walking simulation" claims. Yes, you do plenty of "walking" in this game.
However, where as in just about any other game you would just press UP and slide smoothly through the terrain, not having to worry about the weight or form of your arsenal, the Death Stranding truly SIMULATES all of these elements.
It's a totally different thing to be running around with nothing more than your clothes and boots on, or to have 200kg of bulky packages hanging on your back and arms. There's a world of difference between waltzing on a flat and even footpath and having to balance on top of pile of wet rocks. You truly FEEL the weight, the physics, the terrain and the inevitable exhaustion of your character when you play DS. Tumbling down or getting washed away by rapids not only hurts Sam, but can also have you drop and damage your cargo, potentially ruining your day.
This makes you really PLAN your actions in advance, making the game more tactical. Do I take a risk and reap big rewards, or do I play it safe and move light? Which routes do I choose, and will a Timefall be my cargo's demise? ...etc.

VISUAL PRESENTATION: Photorealistic world and characters. Gorgeous lighting. Fancy special effects. Great!
Soundtrack is beautiful and varied. SFX is top notch, and VA job ranges from "fine" to "great".

CONCLUSION: Want to experience a memorable, slow-burn gaming experience like no other, with a bonkers story mixing scifi and Lovecraft? DS is the game for you!

The gameplay is probably the most controversial aspect of the game. I think it makes walking exciting again, since it really forces you to plan ahead, and to use your brain and strategy to get around. At its worst, the mission design can get tedious, and there are plenty of "filler" missions, to be sure. Another weak point is the stealth and fighting against the "MULEs", most of which can be skipped thankfully. But overall, I really enjoyed the gameplay and the story. Not a game for everyone, sure, but the game is unique in several aspects. One of the most important for me: it is the closest thing I've seen to a hiking game. Before starting a route, you need to plan ahead on certain supplies, the terrain, weather forecast.. And while on the route, you'll need certain navigational skills to be able to read what's the best possible route across a mountain or to cross a river or canyon. Then, you can use ladders and ropes to help you along the way, and will obviously need to tread carefully when walking or scrambling.
But the "hiking" part is just a fraction of what it has to offer. You may choose to rely more heavily on vehicles (bikes and trucks), which will make things more direct but equally crafty. Planning efficient routes of delivery is equally important, and it can be so rewarding that you might be willingly spending time picking up other's lost cargo to finish their deliveries. Yes, some of us are doing that for fun, because it can be fun! It is very rewarding to offload a truck with 700kg of cargo on destination.
And the story, sure, it is very intriguing and with a deep lore. But for me it's not the main attraction of this game, not even close. For me it is the adventure in the rough nature, where you need to survive and find your path across all kind of natural (and unnatural) dangers, and to do so, the game offers you a very realistic physic system and a full set of gadgets and tricks to overcome the different challenges.
If you want simple, direct to the point games, where you don't need to be meticulous, yeah skip this one!

There is a lot of terrain navigation and a methodical approach to inventory management/ travel routes is required. Losing packages can be frustrating but it's part of the fun of the game (think Eve Online style despair feeling of losing stuff you've collected). I've been enjoying the game so far and love the motion capture in the cut scenes (there are many, again this is a Kojima game). There is combat but it's spread out and can be frustrating because your goal is usually to deliver a bunch of cargo, not be an action hero fighter. There are easy ways around combat once you learn a handful of simple strategies (Sam is not a great fist fighter). Terminal entries and emails have been interesting and fill in some of the lore but won't be attractive for gamers who hate reading. The combination of the soundtrack and overall aesthetic of the world, environments and characters has kept me hooked and continuing to build the chiral network. I've seen a few of my friend's structures in my game and it's fun to see where they've been and use items they've left as a free shortcut. It's a slow paced game and is almost more like a cinema experience early on. While this definitely isn't a game for everyone, I have no idea why some are rating it a 0 as if they're surprised about what's in it, to me it was basically what I expected it to be. The technology that powers the game facilitates all its needs to a degree that is essentially an industry benchmark.
Death stranding takes you to an empty, sad and depressing land. A land affected by a phenomena called death stranding that have messed up normal life cycle of humans on earth. I will say only this much to prevent any spoilers that might cause you to lose interest in story.
But this world, also doesnt feel empty and lonely, it rewards you by showing other players helping each other not to only build America once again but also build a world for each other. The shared experience of Death Stranding slowly builds up and it rewards you for respecting and encouraging other players in this "difficult journey". This system sure is an evolved version of methods we have seen utilised in Souls series but here is designed in such a sense to give you happiness. now how much effective it is, it depends on your expectations from the game.
You see, Death Stranding is a serious game, usually for us serious is defined as hard but fun in gaming world. Death stranding somehow tries to be serious by being a very realistic experience. Connecting America, if you imagine it in a world that humanity has lost many things, cant be a simple task of point n clicking. Its a hard task and a mission given to someone rather important and capable of doing it. but it also doesnt mean every second of this journey is filled with AAA over the board action sequences. This is a serious business of delivering parts to connect a nation to one another for a better tomorrow.
Now that I have established my point, im going to say YES the game mainly involves delivering items around the shrunken version of North America from East to west, you have to traverse this environment mostly on foot and sometimes by cars and motors but that is basically what an ideal reality is for such situation. Still, the DS engines helps to resolve land traversal and takes its realism onto a new level. You can feel walking the entire america inch by inch, sure it can be repetitive , but seeing people have gone through same, put up outposts and left you supplies to use makes things interesting and your life easier, knowing that you are not alone in this journey. Sure it can be tedious at times or the whole structure is similar to fetch quests, but it is designed in depths. Inventory management, choosing your way, dealing with weather conditions, obstacles on the way are not things we see in a typical game that involves traditional fetch quests.
You see, this game takes itself very serious just to tell you this is a new genre, a new definition of walking simulator games but in a such majestic fashion that I can say it does pushes it to next level and it is indeed very good at proving it.
There are downsides in the game, story can open up itself in a very classic way of slowly explaining things to player but as matter of fact, everyone in the world of DS including Sam has no idea about the world they are living in, all they know is that they can gather more information through connecting america once again and that is when your reward comes through. Rewards do not need to always bee cool armors, cool weapons, cash or loot, they can simply be as realistic as nothing.
"Nothing" in sense that Sam is putting his life in danger to do something that has nothing in it for him. Just like our own lives, we cant always expect rewards for stuff we do, however we can expect good things to happen, and it that department DS is good! it has bunch of really cool story segments that will keep you engaged through the end of it. DS gameplay is also designed in a very open ended fashion that is both balanced and details which shows Kojima ability in designing something new without much error. You could argue with me, but the game doesnt force you to grind for materials to build stuff, it rather gives you enough and asks you to make a wise decision about it. It asks you to make decisions about your every step since the whole world is reachable and its for you. It doenst ask you to build your adventures like Breath of the wild, it asks you to work for a nation, it asks you to work for your fellow players to build a world for you and for them.
Death stranding sure has its up and downs and it comes down as to simple as poles, ropes and ladders and hands. But these are the things that brought us together and drove us away too. And death stranding tells that, it tells you how hard it is for us to be humans. something we take for granted. Thanks you sony for supporting developers new and unique ideas!

I started this game with a guarded but open mind and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. The attention to detail is amazing. I'd never played a Kojima game before Death Stranding, but I'm a fan now.

The world is initially harsh and a challenge to get across, but you make it civilized, and once you get the zip lines, you're creating convenient networks to get around. Most games have low level enemies to deal with, this game has the terrain as the common enemy, and you feel a sense of pride as you overcome it and change the landscape. In each area you are tasked with getting to your destination in your own way with no help, but upon doing so you link up to the "Chiral Network", allowing you access to usually a dozen or so of other players structures / items / signs in that area. This is always such a sense of relief, and you go on to add to these yourself or upgrade them, sharing the love. On the downside, in my opinion the story is a nonsensical mess, and the delivery of key plot points is mishandled. On top of this, some bosses or set pieces seem extremely out of place and don't have the same care and interesting mechanics as the rest of the game, and could simply not be there to be honest. But you can really just ignore that and focus on what you're doing for 99% of the game, which is facing the world find a refreshing kind of game, free from many video game conventions. The main thing is that if you don't enjoy the basic gameplay loop of delivering packages from point A to B, this game isn't for you.

The fun is in plotting your route and using all the gadgets to make your way past obstacles while keeping your packages safe. There's so much mechanical depth, and it just feels good to play, it's very polished. You're constantly getting new tools, buildings, and vehicles.

Of course if you just want to shoot the bad guys, there isn't a lot of that here. This is a slow burn and you gotta be in the mood to just chill and take it all in. The story is unique and well executed, the visuals are beautiful. There's lots of Kojima's personality in the world, it's full of his quirkiness. This is definitely a labour of love, which is rare in AAA gaming. It's sad that a lot of people are just dumping on it because it doesn't fit their preconceptions of what a game should be. I don't want to be that guy who gets all pretentious about people just not getting it or whatever, but I think a lot of the problems people are having with this game is coming from their own lack of patience and willingness to take the time to understand how things work mechanically.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went from not being hyped at all for this game, to being interested enough to eventually buy it, why? Because as we heard more about the game play, it reminded me of things like a simulator game, I'll say it's not quite that, but I was still drawn to it, and couldn't stop playing.

I was also on the "Hideo Kojima is overrated" wagon, I spent 90 hours on this game and has completely reversed, he understands the The gaming medium, and doesn't just want to make movies. He did something unique with it, his presentation is rough in some places, but it's very Kojima, and has it's charm, I really don't think it should change.

Finally for the game, it's certainly not a perfect game, but it's game play loop being delivering packages, it honestly works quite well, the challenge is the environment, I must admit most characters only really started coming to life by the end of the game, but by then Cliff Unger, and Die-Hardman were suddenly my two favorite characters, where before that point they were barely noticeable.
Deadman is also a fun character, cute you could say, definitely a bit of a comic relief, all the characters are likable though, there wasn't a single character I completely disliked, I will say Higgs was the most built up character that you learn almost nothing about, when it comes to motivations, or I just didn't feel it when the reveal came.

TL;DR Death Stranding is a unique game that has a surprisingly good game play hook, despite how it looks, and a story that really comes to life by the end.

    Pros
    >Eventhough people saying this game is a glorified walking simulator the game does feel fresh, unique, and a bit different from the typical triple a open world games devs like to churn out every year with the same formula.
    >Characters, story, and the lore are pretty amazing and also really deep.
    >The actors are perfect for their roles.
    >Interactions with other players was really fun especially building stuffs to aid yourself and them as well.
    >Play the game whatever the way you want. You can kill or avoid every enemies all together.

    Cons
    >Like I said this is a very slow burn game and wouldn't even take off at 30 or so hours so you'll either like or hate it.
    >Missions are consist of the usual delivery this deliver that from point a to point b, yeah there is collect and timed missions but other than that there's barely any variety. Also some rewards aren't really worth the long walk.
    >Disappointed that Bt's and mules aren't really a threat but more of an annoyance and you can go rambo on an army if you have the firepower.
    >Bosses are easy as hell, even the final bosses are pretty easy and doesn't really require strategy to defeat.
    >Terrains and physics can be really inconsistent at times.
    >The damn truck. I hate it!
    >Ui can be confusing at times and a lot of stuffs can be missed out if you don't bother reading the games manual.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All I can say is … groundbreaking, pushing the envelope of what gaming is, its more atmospheric poetry, with layers and layers of metaphor and futurist vision, it wont appeal to traditional gamers who are still looking for standard game paradigms such as another fps looter shooter, but if your looking for something really different and inventive and cooky, it really is amazing, Its a far future dystopian vision where a dimension beyond our comprehension has invaded on our own reality, US society has broken down, where the difference between whats real and whats tech magic is heavily blurred, where humanity is surviving but not in a form that is comparable to current society, its the kind of game people are going to be debating the meaning of for years to come, and that kind of inventive futurism is worthy of investigation, the actual gameplay parts of the game revolve largely around being a foot based delivery guy in an america that feels like a permanent nuclear fallout rainy day in iceland where it has been invaded by malicious entities from another dimension that also have a reach in to the realm beyond life and the experience of human death,(im sure the delivery gameplay element to some will feel chore like, as a recalibration from the endless in your face high paced re-action), but the story and futurist vision weaved throughout is the real interest, theres so much packed in here of interest, I think this is Kojima's masterpiece, like this is the kind of game he was building up to. its gonna divide some traditional audiences I'm sure, but noone can seriously review this game as zero!?! they are literally being absurd yes its not an FPS its not MGS but get a grip, I think also there is allot of people who don't wait for user reviews before buying thinking he's going to make another MGS, then they freak out because he's made a different style of game and then leave a protest rating, 0 is not really applicable to any game? but over time I think this will be recognised as on of the most innovative game 2019 produced. Story wise its interesting and worth going through the delivery jobs to get to the next reveal, heartman being a particularly interesting character and story part, though all the characters are well done, the ending could be a bit stronger, but the story parts leading up to it make it worth it, overall a great game. Admittedly, I’m only several hours in so far, but in this small amount of time with the game I’ve been absolutely enthralled from the minute I started to the minute I had to put it down to get some sleep. If life’s responsibilities ceased to be a thing, I’d have guaranteed played this all through the night into the morning.

Reviews have been so divisive on this and even those that have been highly receptive tend to say something along the lines of, “I think I like it...?” or “it’s boring, but it’s a masterpiece”. Those negative reviews completely dismiss the entire game as a piece of garbage with seemingly no merit. Still, after watching dozens of review videos, reading handfuls of varying reviews and scores, I couldn’t shake the fact that I felt like I’d really dig this game. I’m so glad I did. I was so hesitant to buy this game and even upon starting it to think, maybe they’re all right and I made a terrible decision. Nope. Not for me at least. I loved every minute of the cutscenes, traversal, soundscapes, and world that Kojima and his crew have created.

I love the gameplay so far. The slow pace, micromanaging walking (which to me actually feels like Sam has real momentum and the feedback from the controls feels really good), the mapping out your delivery route, the aesthetics of the menus and open world, the graphics, soundtrack, etc. There’s chill moments and absolutely tense moments. ...and some REALLY bizarre, out-there moments as well! I guess it really does just come down to each persons individual tastes and phase of life. This is the perfect game for me right now amidst a sea of normalcy and same-same games - I love RPG’s, action games, shooters, etc - but it’s nice to have something so unique and so focused on a particular-narrow vision. To me, Death Stranding even this early in my play-through deserves nothing less than a 9/10. I know it’s a long game. I know, as with any game (RPG or otherwise) some aspects of gameplay do eventually get a little old towards the endgame. But I also know what I like, and it’s right here. This weird, gorgeous, oddly-fun (to me) game that Kojima productions has dared to make is EXACTLY what I didn’t know I wanted this game to be.

This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
