I can totally see why someone would hate this game, deem it obnoxious and full of itself, and just see it as a tiresome bore that's devoid of fun, but I also see why someone can call it a masterpiece. I get it. I really do. It's definitely not for everyone out there. It takes a certain level of patience to play. Not the kind of patience that everyone has. There's no question that gamesI can totally see why someone would hate this game, deem it obnoxious and full of itself, and just see it as a tiresome bore that's devoid of fun, but I also see why someone can call it a masterpiece. I get it. I really do. It's definitely not for everyone out there. It takes a certain level of patience to play. Not the kind of patience that everyone has. There's no question that games SHOULD be fun, right? Otherwise what's the point. But this game is clearly trying to invoke a certain feeling from you, albeit frustration, anger, exhuastion, sadness, etc. and I think it's gonna resonate in various ways for all kinds of people who are open to try it. You still may not like it but if you're ever looking for a completely unique, original experience then look no further. But me? I love this game. I really do. Yes, you're delivering packages but there's much more to it than that and delivering these packages can be strangely addicting and satisfying. It's a strategy game in a lot of ways and the way it implements multiplayer is nothing short of brilliant. I found myself building structures to help not only myself but others, often having my structures overwhelmed with likes given to me by other people who encountered them. It invoked a great feeling and it was awesome when someone would leave a helpful thing for me, especially when I needed it at the time. To me, THAT was what I found fun. The passion put into the game is undeniable and it shows. It truly feels like a long journey and it's very immersive due to the sound design and visuals being top notch. The narritive, I think is well told, very intriguing and clearly has a message that it wants to convey, though expect it to be in a very "Kojima" manner, but nontheless, easy enough to understand within the rules that universe establishes. Cutscenes CAN get lengthy from time to time but I couldn't help but be mesmerized during each one. They're shot so expertly and well acted that I was hooked to every scene, which was also fantastically emphasised by the AMAZING soundtrack this game has. Both the Original score and the songs borrowed from other artists simply just works for this...That's all I can say. I'll be walking along, making a delivery and a certain feeling will be going through my head and this song will suddenly come on and it just fits that moment perfectly and helps reinforce the way I happen to be thinking and feeling at that particular point in the game, with the environment I'm trekking through. If you just play along and let it do it's thing, it makes for some really special moments on your journey. I've downloaded at least 10 songs from this game onto my phone. A mix of the OST and the borrowed songs. Music is just perfectly implemented every time and I've never seen anything quite like it with a game. It's special. I've been frustrated by the game at times, yes. It's not perfect at all and I can see why it's so polarizing amongst the community of people who have actually played it, but I couldn't help but be on the side that loves it a lot. I played a 110 hours by the time I was done attaining the Platinum trophy for it and I'm still thinking about the game long after it ended. So many things I truly loved about it. If you ever bring yourself to give this game a chance, go for it. It honestly might surprise you, as it did with me. Expand

It seems it is cool to hate things these days based on emotion, perception and ignorance. For all those ‘players’ who have left the game a 0 negative review, I bet that nearly all of them haven’t even played the game let alone spent the 40+ hours required to finish it.

Nonetheless, the many hours I have spent with the game has been great. It’s gorgeous, the story is mysterious and the setting disturbing. Is it a game based on fast paced, adrenaline spiking action? No. Is it methodically paced, creepy and downright atmospheric? Yes. This game isn’t for those who are hooked receiving copious amounts of instant gratification nor those who simply want to tea bag other players online. You will require patience and the willingness to accept a perfect blend of story telling and gameplay. Basically, you’ll enjoy the game if you’re not a bland, bottom feeding meat head. But there are accusations of it being a ‘walking simulator’ and repetitive. I can’t argue too much here because there is lots of walking but this is evenly split up by the narrative and combat more than enough to keep the progression flowing. But the game is gorgeous and there’s plenty of challenges traversing the terrain where you almost always decide what route to take. I do however feel that the reports of ‘repetitive gameplay’ need to fall on deaf ears because it’s no where near as repetitive as sports sim games like Madden, Fifa, Football manager or shooters like Fortnite, CoD, Overwatch and numerous other games where you rinse and repeat the same maps, same game modes and same objectives. Hell, people have been performing the same old quests on WoW and other MMO’s for over a decade and racing around the same tracks in racing sims for just as long. Ultimately, I would compare this game to a great book that you’d invest your time in rather than a TV series you’ll binge watch in one day. It definitely hooks you in and has a very compelling backstory that you’ll be itching to uncover as you play. It’s not for everyone and it’s not meant to be but we do love in a culture where people want more, faster and to be rewarded for less effort. And you will need to put effort into this game. In the end, the haunting yet calming feeling of walking through the mountains alone becomes addictive in the best sense of the word. Combine that with indescribable creatures, perfectly blended horror tones throughout alongside a truly unique setting and aesthetic, then you’ve got yourself a masterpiece. My only gripe would be the desire to visit other climates but that is a minor concern on what is an overall fantastic game.

So I just finished the game and felt like I had to leave a review to counter a bit of the hate on here.
It took me about 49 hours to complete all the chapters, doing quite a number of side missions, but not nearly all of them.

And I just have to say that this has been one of the most unique game experiences I've had in a long time. And last time I felt so immersed in a game was last year with read dead. And contrary to what has been going around on the internet, I’ve had fun with the game from the moment I started it.
The gameplay is very strategic, deals with a lot of management and is downright addicting and thrilling. Having to move a **** ton of cargo through a challenging terrain, planning your route, planning the trip, dealing with all the obstacles and challenges along the way. Also the passing in which the map and upgrades are revealed and implemented is amazing, changing up the core gameplay with crazy bosses and other mini gameplay elements that we come to know from Kojima.
Also the online element is really cool and refreshing. Had so much fun seeing other peoples structures and signs, helping me out and making my travels easter.
The story is fun and interesting. It’s a bit mystical and has many fantasy elements. But it also deals with some more philosophical and more current subjects. Some that our friends from the US might take a bit too personal, especially coming from a non-american. And I feel like some journalists and internet media kinda showed how toxic they can be, when creators don’t show America in the fantastic light, leading the world and propagating how great of a country it is.
So I think a lot of the hate also comes from this. And the fact that they take what Kojima said about Americans liking shooters more, being taken too personal. And If you rate this game 0 because of that… Pretty pathetic I must say.

All and all, I feel like we had these sort of weird experiences a lot more in the PS2 and GameCube era. I guess gamers were a little different back then. And I don’t understand all the fuss. It’s a really, really good game. Sure, silly at times, maybe even a bit cringy. But that’s Ok. It’s unapologetically itself. And I’m pretty sure that this game will reveal itself to be a pretty big cult classic and all the downvotes in the world isn’t going to change that. Why? You might ask? Because, again, It’s really that good. You just need to give it time to breathe and don’t rush to finish it in under forty hours. And to top it all off: 1) No microtransactions 2) a completely new and super creative IP from great talents in gaming and film. 3) A story that ends and doesn’t build up to a shared universe!

I recommend this to anyone who likes strategy, the best item management since RE4, creative story, amazing environments and taking their time. Be patient and be open to what this game wants to give, and you’ll probably be as addicted and fascinated with this game as I am.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
O jogo lembra muito STATE OF DECAY 2 do Xbox One.

I feel the scores that give this game a low 1 or - 4 score are very unfair as even if you dont like the game, you have to appreciate what it has attempted to acheive and respect that it has very few bugs for a launch game. I recommend that everyone at least gives this game a try as it is and absolute masterpiece and is a one of a kind, a true original concept.

As that game has this big empty world with no NPCs and most of the time you horse ride from Point A to B to C in this big beautiful yet empty world to kill Closseus but the gameplay is more traversing then "action" per say same as Death Stranding and that game is one of the best games to this date (judging by how well its remake did it still is) and Death Stranding is just that, A game where you traverse this big empty and beautiful land and the story unfolds as you progress and the game does a good job at explaining things and the story makes sense and if you don't get something or are confused about something then you can read the interviews (Heartman and Deadman ones are the best) so yeah
it's an amazing game definitely worth the nomination of Game of the Year.

I absolutely and positively loved the game (Not a kojima fanboy) and would like to give few points on why i think so .

    1) The Concept :- This is a well thought and twisted concept . This a concept not much people will like coz most of the people playing games these days are little ponys . This game is deep , dark , and Unpredictable . hats off to the minds behind this game .

    2) Characters & Art :- I love games who has good characters , with great backstory story and amazing acting . this game has it all and its dark . Acting , animation and art is off the chars . The game has seriously great villans with mindblowing voice acting . Everything in this game will start making sense as you progress . Yoji Shinkawa has to be thanked for all this .

    3) Story & Scenario :- Story will keep you guessing and wondering , it will make you think . The scenarios are so freaking good , and they blend in story effortlessly . Every dialog every word will will mean something . especially after finishing the game if you go back and watch the cutscenes , it will blow your mind .

    4) Gameplay & The World :- Gameplay is little unbalanced and sloppy . only reason most of the players will leave the game unfinished . As far as the the world is concerned this is the exact type of world which suits for the game (Empty) . In between nothing you are delivering stuff , overcoming harsh terrain , and rather unimpressive enemies . its rewarding in its own way . You have to find joy in it , if you did the gameplay can be appreciated .

Definitely Death Stranding it's a beast of its own, I can't remember where but said something along the lines that it feels like an indie movie with a blockbuster budget, and maybe that might be correct, the only difference is that this is a videogame.

DS is overwhelming in every aspect, from its story to its gameplay, starting with the story, Kojima is a genius in terms of setting a world and making statements or even predictions of our own reality, here in Death Stranding he took it to the next level, when people talk about how MGS is a complex story is because DS hasn't appeared yet, it really overwhelms you with its lore and at times it can be difficult to keep up with all the terminology it uses in its story, I don't want to speak a lot of it because the less you know about it the better, also, I wasn't thrilled with the inclusion of "Hollywood" actors but they surely pay off in a lot of scenes, specially Tommi Earl Jenkins, one of his scenes gave me goosebumps to the next level, it also made my eyes tears a little, they're that good.

The divisive part may be the gameplay, a lot of people said that this is a walking simulator and that may be true at some extent, but is not that simple, the core mechanic to me is that the player goes against the terrain, weather and some hazards, the hazards come as human enemies or BTs (the black beings), but mostly the terrain. In order to progress you need to adjust your inventory and decide what kind of things are you going to take with you, then, depending on how heavy or light is your character, your movement can be from cartoony clumsy to fast as a soccer player, after that you take delivery items from "A" to "B" and repeat till the end of the game, in theory it might sound boring but in practice is really addictive, and once you get to chapter 3 where you get a lot of new items and structures to help you in your journey you'll have a blast. I can't compare DS to any other game but to me, it has a Monster Hunter vibe, where the learning curves are stiff and overwhelming, but once you passed them you'll have an amazing time.

The multiplayer aspect is also incredible, instead of having a competitive experience this is a connection or strand experience where you and your fellow players didn't see each other or play with them directly but help each other with structures or items you construct, i.e. If you set a bridge to cross a river, other players in your server can use it too and also can upgrade it together, this aspect really hit me in a good way, to the point that I even gave away things to my neighborhood in order for everyone to use them. But not everything is perfect with this system, it can at times broke the experience, for example, at least two times I was told that my next delivery would be incredibly hard but, when doing it, I find a lot of things like bridges, power stations or vehicles that made the mission so easy, so it can break the immersion.

As for the negative things, I can see how for someone this can be boring, but one needs to keep in mind that this is not a shooter or a stealth game, but at the end it can feel repetitive and at times cheaty, as for the stealth part, I didn't feel it worked that good with the human enemies, the AI is dumb but the mechanics also felt unrefined at times, a similar thing happens to the "other" stealth mode with the BTs, they give you a lot of tension but once you understand how they work, they're for the rest of the game annoying, speaking of BTs the boss fights with this beings are so cool, flashy and epic but they are also broken and easy, it feels that you can't die from them because the game throws a lot of resources like HP or ammo in order for you to don't run out of them, they're also very fun tho' so it depends on your view I guess. My last and maybe more important issue to me is its world, it can felt empty to the point that it feels unfinished, you'll find a lot of people but they're holograms, for the most part, humanity is hidden in the ground and narratively it makes sense but I can't shake the feeling that is more a budget issue than a story issue, also because exploring is dangerous and also unrewarding, you'll find yourself making the same trajectories or following another player's trail to get to your destination.

Certainly Death Stranding is not a masterpiece for me, but I can easily see why it is for another person, for me it was a great time, and every day it passes it makes me think a lot in its themes, characters and my personal narrative with it, I also hardly believe that the passing on time will give its rightful place as a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding is not without some flaws. It is not a game for everyone, the pacing is not perfect, the combat (what there is of it) feels a bit janky, and some boss battles are a bit underwhelming

    However...

In an age where one game after another are nonsensical copy paste action games with barebones story, terrible low budget cutscenes, microtransactions and completely void of artistic vision, Death Stranding stands out as something fresh and remarkable, while still tugging some nostalgic strings when it nods back to the first Metal Gear Solid games.

It's a game that has grown on me even after finishing it. It demands that you reflect on its story and themes.

The gameplay is fresh, and surprisingly fun and addictive, and its visuals are unmatched.

I was worried Kojima was past his prime after the dissappointing MGSV, but DS shows that he has more stories to tell, and what a story it is...

DS is a game that should not be missed, as it stands as one of few games in modern times that tries to push the medium forwards. And it succeeds.

Long life Kojima! [link omitted per site rules]

I’m about 15 hours into the game. I’m at the start of chapter four. The story is intriguing and dramatic. The gameplay won’t pull every gamer in. I found myself wanting to help others by building helpful routes to complete missions. I think this game is out to teach us that alone we struggle but together we progress. It’s a very cool game... just be patient with it.

I wanted to read reviews before investing in such a different game. I believe it is true that shooting games and sports games are best sellers because they require skill and practice. Any game must require the player to master their intended skills and therefore the feeling of becoming better and better is what makes people love gaming ( apart from story, graphics , soundtrack etc which are minimal entry requirements nowadays) i dare to say gameplay is the foundation of video games ( physical reflexes for punching buttons quickly or difficult puzzle solving is mainly what we love TODAY!) this game does not require being skilled at neither physical reflexes nor puzzle solving, therefore you don’t have a game right? This enters another category, the movie category maybe, death stranding is a 40 hours long real time movie filmed in one shot? Another category should be a new one called JOB SIMULATOR?, most people play games in order to escape the monotony of their lives and jobs , in a few words: to have a break! and the least thing most people want to do ( in occidental countries) is get a second job as a delivery guy on their free time, we mostly want to break things and throw shells to other go karts etc. BUT maybe there are some cultures who’s main life’s pillar is work ( like the Japanese ) and they might actually like to “EXPERIENCE ” another profession on their free time. Maybe I work as a dentist on real life and I would love to work as a delivery man in the middle of nature on my free time. Just saying this might be a sign of a future niche need out there ( one that we still don’t know we need)... not of “games” as we know them today but more as a mean to live a different virtual life, let’s say I am a mechanical engineer working at Toyota but I would like to experience life as a doctor, so I buy a doctor simulator game where I can experience being a doctor, and yes it might be monotonous but you get that’s the idea with any other job. Actual video games let you become pirates or cowboys in an already saturated market, FUTURE video games will let you become deliverymen, veterinarians , actors, etc. As for the experience of being this delivery man in death stranding I believe the itch behind Kojima’s game is to be able to scape your life and become a traveler, relax while you are delivering a package, the same way we all relax while we drive someplace ,take a hike, take a shower, assemble a lego set, these are opportunities for meditation and MAYBE that is the main purpose of this game, give the player a time to think about life etc. while he makes a delivery. THE ISSUE IS that if I am right and this is the main objetive behind the game , it was TERRIBLY MARKETED ( or was on purpose?) Since people don’t know how to judge this thing they compared it to Metal Gear or any other GOOD ACTUAL game they love and that is why it sucks for many people, they bought a job simulator thinking they where getting “something else” cooler, etc . On the other hand if they have marketed as the thing it is, this game would have sold 10% what it has sold on its release date because it would be a game for an actual relatively small niche that still don’t know they have an itch for these kind of experiences. It would be great if they launched this game with a DEMO! so we could all try it and know beforehand if this is the experience for us or not before spending 60 USD. In summary, I believe new experiences are coming to video games and we might someday be able to live other lives that don’t resume to violence against someone or competition as we know it in video games , I am talking about something more like being able to be a fireman on your free time, become a marketing advisor for a great firm, becoming an astronaut, Why not? Why not being a fireman this year and be a chef the next? Real life only allow most of us to have one profession in a lifetime . Let’s hope innovation comes sooner than later because we are getting bored of killing zombies or shooting something new year after year. Take for example Detroit : become human game, it is a job simulator as well , a negotiator detective job while facing the “west world dilema” of being a Droid. We need innovative experiences! Expand

Think scaling the colossi in Shadow of the Colossus but on the scale of the mundane- that level of control is in every step and you will not be able to appreciate this game unless you are the one with the controller in your hands. Kojima has made something incredibly interesting and I'm on board for his unrestrained works if they maintain and/or improve this level of quality. Death Stranding is an engaging game that will make you feel the weight of Sam's pack as you struggle to cross the dangerous American wilds. The story isn't as complicated as something like Kingdom Hearts or the MGS franchise as a whole, but there's plenty of intrigue that is paired with the world building and lore in the social menus. Overall the game is dripping with that Kojima style and flair and it's obvious that he wanted to create something out of frustration that expresses the value of connection and helpfulness. The feeling of finding someone has left a bike for you out in the world or placed a climbing anchor in an area notorious for high-cargo deliveries is so overwhelmingly appreciative that you feel compelled to use the in game "Like" system to praise other players and to contribute in the same way to pay that forward. This game requires an investment to fully appreciate, but once you do you cannot help but be impressed. The visuals are gorgeous, the sound design is great and there are plenty of licensed tracks to use in your room as well as popping up in some areas as you hike around. The thing that keeps this game from being a ten is the combat. While there are some neat tools available to you as the player, for story reasons you will want to stick to non lethal means, and this limits things a bit. Otherwise Death Stranding is a game that I can recommend to anyone who wants to experience an interesting take on multiverses, life and death, and time travel elements with all of Kojima's known flair, provided you are willing to really engage with the game and realize that it is not Metal Gear 6. If you like exploring an environment, exploring new game-play mechanics, and enjoy experiencing the product of higher game development, this is an experience for you. Death Stranding is chock full of style and quirk at every turn. That is what this game is about. If I want action, I play Borderlands 3. If I want style, art, and a more cerebral experience, I put this on. All day, I cant seem to pull myself away from Death Stranding. This is not a world you run through with a rifle. This is a world you explore slowly while thinking about the choices Kojima made.

I have not found the game-play boring in any way. I enjoy the hiking. It is the closest thing I have ever played to hiking in real life. I look at the beautiful environment, decide how I would cross it in real life, and the game does an amazing job of actually matching what I imagine in my mind. If you push the traversal much beyond reality, you will fail. It is immersive in a new way.

It's a great game. I am 33 years old and this game is perfect for me!
It's a pity that the scenario suffers because of Hideo Kojima's inexperience in linking the key moments of the game plot.

I had to find my way down and try not to destroy BB or my cargo. Every delivery seems very urgent and super satisfying once completed. Especially when I’m being chased by looters trying to steal my cargo and I make a quick escape. The lore and story are fantastic and it reminds me of Abrams “Cloverfield” kind of stuff. I love this game and am addicted. No hype here, I am no fan boy and in fact not a huge fan of the metal gear series. I don’t fall for hype. I just enjoy video games and honestly this game is refreshing. My back log is huge and I’m currently in Luigis Mansion 3, Astral Chain, DMC5, Code Vein and Pokemon Shield. I put them all down for this game. They will not be played until I finish what I dare to say is a GOTY contender. I haven’t been this hooked to a game this year since Sekiro. 9/10 for me. Expand

For way to long due to shareholders & money grabbing CEO'S has held back way too much innovation and talent that is need so badly in the gaming industry.

That part happens to be 8 hours long, and you have to be the kind of player that will see, and raise kojima's possible bluff on a loop that, if you are open enough to what this game wants to do, is fun, in a piece-by-painstaking-piece way that the only analogy I could think of was the Dark Souls of Walking Simulators, and that Hideo Kojima has invented a virtual job space in which to tell his entire notebook of ideas to you while you are on a very long, spooky, sometimes boring, sometimes absolutely ridiculous, but pretty cool too. Like, if The Martian and Annihilation were written by the guy who made Metal Gear Solid holding a grudge, after seeing Oblivion, Prometheus, and collaborating on PT with Del Toro,
So, I won't get in deep here, but aside; IF, negative bombs about it being boring being perfectly valid if that's all there were to this game (which is a lage part, no lie), this game's footage and press, cutscenes, trailers, or otherwise interest you, with the knowledge you have about what the gameplay and pace will be; I would reccomend this game to you because it is very good at itself. For the other 50% of game players at least, I understand the 0s.

A virtual job and social experiment and movie written to be a video game that by experiencing what it makes you do in the 'you're gonna have to actually do that' way that Dark Souls initially did with the way it handled health and difficulty in video games that is a very bad analogy- but is the most recent example of a team going hard with what they knew they were going to at best make people curious to see if there was any depth beneath the walking simulator. Turns out, yes, maybe too much when it does, but the act of playing this game is exactly the game as advertised top to bottom, and in no way did Kojima mis-represent anything about it- and yet we have a game that tells itself as a fetch quest.
in a way that actually has me re-thinking some of the most **** side-quests in zelda as the most thought-developmental moments of my life. And I'm only half joking, because I actually am having those memories pulled to mind playing Death Stranding because that is what the game is about, the tedium of what we have to do, but how well we do it, which is where the hideo-kojima-game-ify quality of bizarre scoring-sorties breaks up what must be like if interstellar and silent hill collided with end of evangelion, all slowed down to the speed of something like Shadow of the Colossus for the first 8 hours. Because most people are 0'ing out before they get to the parts where you drive things- you drive things. You get faster. The game is about alleviating pain in the assness, but it's worth it ultimately because you were there for a show and if you work for it it pays you, in very little chunks until you essentially become promoted at your virtual delivery job, where the world-changing dynamics of multiple-instanced player-set-item-and-traversal littering the landscape keeps changing dramatically, but you have to be that curious to see it and internally resolved to see, and raise kojima, hoping and in my opinion, successfully holds all wildcards. That's a card game metaphor for kojima wins and you lose, but the kind of lose that you want if this game is to work at all.

I am that kind of film-watcher or game player, where I am on board with this type of convention break and line of extremely highly produced once-in-a-ever event that is Death Stranding logic and circumstances that led us to this game and what kind of discussion it is opening, even if I don't find the 'message' in the game that deep, what kojima has done with an audience that is willing to experience a movie in slow motion as a gameplay center to tell Silent Hills met Akira Paperboy Fiber-optic tecnician and architect with cutscenes and design that in a lot of ways are a throw-back to what a science fiction Final Fantasy might be today. If, Hideo Kojima did it. And he did, and I like it. You might hate it. Both of these things are okay and have reasons, and that's not enough to justify a score, but for what I'd give what the game is doing on a personal-immersion level is as good as anything I've never seen before it in games.

The start of the game is the only thing not letting me give this a 10, the story telling world everything is great. If you enjoy Euro Truck Simulator or games where you deliver cargo you will enjoy this, if you are a hardcore action fan who wants every moment to be crazy this isn't for you. It's slow paced and rewarding for those who choose to enjoy something instead of dismissing a game after 2 hours of game play. You wouldn't watch a movie for 10 minutes and say it's the worst movie ever made, why would you do the same with a game? Full game will likely take 38-42 hours depending on your play style.

Death Stranding proves AAA games do not need to be focused on violence and can attempt to do new unique things at the same time.

A Brilliant atmospheric masterpiece. Take your time with it. If you love exploration games, you'll love Death Stranding.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
