Why is the game divisive? I think it is because, whenever something new appears, there is resistance.

I think what makes Death Stranding special, and different, is how a dozen ideas are all wrapped and pointed at one concept, one vision: connect, help each other, step out. So the game mechanics aren't there to make the game more fun—and that is the exact point I think some gamers
Why is the game divisive? I think it is because, whenever something new appears, there is resistance.

I think what makes Death Stranding special, and different, is how a dozen ideas are all wrapped and pointed at one concept, one vision: connect, help each other, step out.

So the game mechanics aren't there to make the game more fun—and that is the exact point I think some gamers can't accept. The mechanics are there to help build on the idea, the experience.

In that, Death Stranding is brilliant. All that value built up from game mechanics working towards a concept catalyses the story: rebuild America together.

The fun comes from the ability to immerse yourself in the game, and invest yourself in the story. If the player is superficial in their approach, they won't enjoy the walking.

And that is fine. Actually, it's great. I think it's bad to gaming, as a whole, to try and have games be for everyone.

It's fine if a AAA game pleases some people enough that they'll give it a 9. For the ones that gave it a 1, get a refund—and find another game to play. You don't have to like Death Stranding.

This game is the best achievement in gaming sphere in a long time! Kojima-san just bring us something we've never seen before. I have to admit that the missions are a bit repetitive, but, it doesn't kill the game. So good!

Kojima does it again creating a truly objectively brilliantly designed game, plot, and setting while simultaneously creating a product that won't be accepted universally. This is a game built to deliver a niche experience that not everyone will appreciate.

The story is intriguing and the graphics are insane. Trying to figure out how to traverse the terrain without damaging cargo or getting killed by BTs or MULEs is very puzzle oriented. It's fun trying to scale mountains with ladders and climbing ropes to avoid the dangerous territory only to realize when you get to the top that the top has enemies too. You'll unlock vehicles and guns after about 10 hours. Just do the main quests and get to chapter 3 asap. You can always go back later. Expand

The item management, route planning and finally the traversal is very well polished (as expected for all Japanese made games) story telling is a bit of a slow paced compare to other Kojima games of the past but still pretty interesting. Finally, the most unique aspect of the game is the "social strand" as they called it. Structures and equipment used and left by others will have their own impact on how you traverse the landscape and it is well executed in my opinion. Players can even donate their own materials to finish a huge construction project such as a highway, which in turn will benefit everyone once it is finished. Never experience anything like this in my 20 years of gaming (it is quite different from the multiplayer aspect of the Souls games like others are claiming). The game prioritize your friends list for this "strand system" where you are most likely going to see structures from your friends first, but you can also choose to enter into a "strand contract" with other players so all the equipment they left behind will surely appear in your game world as long as the contract is binding. It is for me the most enjoyable part of the game. A unique experience and definitely a welcomed break from all the games these days which always involve guns, loud explosions, killings and gore. So far, the game has surprised me due to its fascinating (and quite bizarre) story. Today, I played around 6 hours and barely noticed that all that time I just delivered materials, cases and boxes to other communities which needed them; I also enjoyed the bridge mechanics, creating bonds with other players and the Community supporting each other with accurate signs and likes, as well as donating good weapons and undelivered materials.

Is a good game, but not for everybody.

People that say it's just a walking simulator have never really played the game. It's a traversal survival game with sandbox elements as to how to tackle situations you find yourself in during your journey. Right before heading out for a expedition, you study your map as to which route do you plan on taking and equip your gear accordingly you, you plan out and actually participate in crafting your own experience. The stealth regarding BTs totally fits into the horror stealth element of their encounters. The actions you make and the resources, items and structures you built are available in the world of other players synced in your session and vice versa, perfectly addressing the theme of connection to others in this game, what you do for yourself benefits others, so you pay attention to what you're doing. The only kinda strong negatives that I can pin out in this game is that the antagonist falls flat at the final encounter and this game has awful third person shooting. But hey, this game discourages killing, it doesn't want you to kill and offers direct consequences for doing so via void outs or having to do the chore of incinerating the bodies. It's a extremely well acted game where each and every single character's back story is perfectly written and conveyed. Acknowledging pain but embracing hope for a better tomorrow. Not a game for everyone, but for those that are into this type of stuff, it's a must have. Also it's fractured story telling is far better structured than a certain overated game I'll refrain from naming. Expand

This is a game with great scope, inventive gameplay and intuitive control. Amazingly fun and gets better throughout your play through as you become accustomed to the interesting world and its compelling story and characters.

There are mechanics that you will recognise from the outset and the new mechanics which are introduced are fresh and inventive. These add weight and depth to your play-through and make the usually simple task of walking into something which requires a level of thought and planning.

Whilst traversing the expansive world (which you will be doing a lot) you will encounter a variety of environments and with them - challenges. Coming across time-fall, BT’s and Mules keep the gameplay fresh and there are a number of ways to tackle these.

In short, I think the game is inventive, compelling and most of all, beautiful. The world that Kojima Productions have created should be held to high acclaim and used as a bar for other developers. I urge people to give this game a chance through the opening couple of hours to around chapter 3 and allow yourselves to get used to the systems. Loving it!

Despite the division between both critics and users, there is one thing everyone must admit, for it is out of the question: this is a polished creative product, notwithstanding the personal opinions regarding gameplay or story, which, in all fairness, are both compelling and fresh, delivering a sense of urgency, peace, or simple contemplation throughout a long yet constant adventure, all made possible by a profound and aesthetically powerful experience rarely even attempted in videogames. So the first and most important thing to consider is: does a product such as this deserve a 10 because you enjoyed it and, more importantly, does it deserve a 0, a 1, a 2 or a 3 just because you disliked it? Subjectivity doesn’t mean “this is terrible because I don’t find pleasure in it”, on the contrary, it’s the development of a solid critical judgment through reason and experience.

That said, the game isn’t for everyone, mainly because the concept can and will sometimes result in what is typically conceived of as “boredom”, yet this outwardly negative sensation is not explicitly so, for it is in not in catharsis, pleasure and “fun” that the most thrilling experiences are delivered in and from life, but in pain, challenge and struggle. Does this make for a “good” game? No, definitely not. If you play videogames so as to fulfill a power fantasy, for pure, mindless relaxation or for entertainment, this game may not be for you, just as a novel by Dostoyevsky or Heinrich Böll may not be for a fan of Harry Potter: is Harry Potter bad? Not inherently so, just as other plainly entertaining games are not bad, yet their goal is more straightforward than that of Death Stranding, and still never would a profoundly touching story as Crime and Punishment receive the solid standing reviews of Harry Potter, why? Because it’s complex, saturated to the brim of intention, and an artistically human sum of its parts.

Again, does that make Death Stranding a good game? No. I believe this is not a good game, but the beginning of a new way of delivering aesthetic experiences. This is not a good way in the traditional sense, but it doesn’t want to be, not always at least, and that’s why I didn’t grade it with a 10, because sometimes, it seems to me, the game wants to become a plain game, offering traditional bits of gameplay, which don’t seem to belong to the overall arc of what is, essentially, a masterpiece and a new outlet for the diffusion of human creativity.

If Call of Duty or other AAA titles are the Avengers of the gaming world, Death Stranding is a film pulled from the Criterion Collection. It's an artistic vision that informs and leaves you with a message. It doesn't hold your hand through every cutscene, but rather expects you to pay attention and keep up. You feel like you're in the safe hands of a talented and experienced creator, and it's such a pleasure to dive deeper into the fully realized world that Death Stranding has to offer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding is a fantastic game with intriguing and fun gameplay, logically coherent background but too much cutscenes. I haven't played a lot of Hideo Kojima games but this one is at least way better than MGSV.

The gameplay itself is outstanding in the whole game industry. It is indeed a misplacement to categorize it as a walking simulator which the mechanisms are almost nothing or designed solely to serve the narration (like in Edith Finch). The core playable content is like Human: Fall Flat which is an adventure with puzzles that is enhanced in freedom by a bit of physical simulation and sandbox. As the game proceeds, you will be able to use a large amount of tools with upgrades to make the delivery, and the use of them can get very deep.

Building a world together is not a fresh idea but it can easily become homogeneous and repetitive when it comes to strategy games, or require impossible amount of resources. The game applied a smart asynchronuous online playing that implement this idea while bringing some fun from social media.

I didn't mention anything about the soundtrack and graphics, because those are peripheral elements of a game as a kind of art. However this game is a masterpiece in interactive art. On my opinion, the best of a game them in other kind of arts is that the background and plot can be deeply embedded in the game mechanisms and in Death Stranding the relationship between them is very tight. For example, the mechanism of deleting facilities is the timefall, which also account for why you need to make deliveries in person. The growth system is well designed, unlike some media said it is nothing, the previous EXP in other games is granted the meaning of LIKES and each kind of level will give our character Sam different kinds of buffs. There are even more outstanding details that make the game coherent but I don't want to spoil them here.

All in all, 10 for the gameplay and -1 for the cutscenes, I don't really care about the decorations on the prototype.

I'm halfway into the game and this will be without spoilers. If you don't need an ounce of Ritalin for simple tasks like reading a book or watching a slow paced Kubrick movie then you will probably love this game. If you don't need an ounce of Ritalin for simple tasks like reading a book or watching a slow paced Kubrick movie then you will probably love this game. If you need something to explode every five seconds go see an old Transformers movie this is probably not for you. If you actually play this game and instead aren't just jumping on the review dog-pile you will find it is much more than just a "walking simulator" or delivering packages. In Skyrim you very often are just walking between two places however things happen on the journey to interrupt you just like in this game. Traversal itself is a mechanic with the player having to navigate the environments as one in the real world at times (one cannot just hold the left stick and fall asleep like literally any other game). The player must balance, avoid slipping and running into rocks that would have Sam slip and tumble. This sounds like a pain while it's only annoying enough to remind you on spare occasions to watch where you are walking or face a fall. While minimalist in design there are hazards that must be avoided and there is great tension between balancing the player's load out and weight against the need for maneuverability that many encounters require. The player can even fight back against enemies and develop new tools to make their encounters easier while giving the player more choices in how they want to travel the world. The balance of power however is almost always stacked against the player making sure that every encounter is somewhat interesting even if bosses are a little easy. It is a metaphorical and literal balancing act on what tools to bring (with their weight) and all the goods that need delivered. What is revolutionary is that other players structures will pop up in the world providing must needed respite when one needs a quick escape or rest. The world at first starts empty and feel post apocalyptic while later on as more multiplayer structures are raised it becomes alive and one truly feels like a cog in a large machine bringing people back together. The visuals are superb as well as the music and acting with some valid criticism being that of the writing and some particular actors. Some of it is pretty "Kojima'ey" and pretty out there and silly but unless you are one of those people who just blatantly hate Hideo despite never playing one of his games than you will more than likely see past it as it is very much in background lore like the interviews you read in the menu. At worst the dialogue will give you a campy chuckle (or a cringe) which will gave way to the almost meditative act of delivering packages, saving items from dangerous locations and dropped by other players, building roads, bridges and highways and other structures to help your fellow players out as well as fending off crazy ghosts and weird package obsessed weirdos. Instead of appreciating a new, complete and unique single-player AAA experience that clearly carries the vision of a single man, unaltered by the publishers greed and without any kind of microtransactions or other monetization practices, they act like children wailing in their own sh*t.

The game robbed you of nothing, it never lied to you nor deceived you - It always showed you what it was: A slow-paced narrative driven game that's focused on making deliveries, featuring a vast amount of rich, complex traversal and item management mechanics, and not your mass fodder "pew pew" and "bam bam". And in my opinion, after playing quite a chunk of it already, just those traversal mechanics are deeper than most of today's games full gameplay mechanics, especially in the AAA segment.

Even if you don't have as broad a gaming horizon yet and still don't have enough of today's mainstream games - Why not just be happy for the game and the people that like it, while continuing to play the stuff that YOU like instead of downright sh*tting on and making fun of something you don't find interesting (and don't even fully sem to understand because you haven't played it, judging by most of the "reviews" I see on here).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't know what this game was all about. I just blindly jumped on the hate train which I absolutely regret. Now that I bought and that I'm actually playing the game I have to say that I'm very pleased with everything it threw at me up until now. Sure, the story is a mess at first but eventually everything will make sense, I'm pretty positive about that.

As for the gameplay loop, it is indeed not for everyone. If you like fast paced, heavy action games in which you can unleash your inner ADHD kid, then Death Stranding is not for you. However, if you like slow paced games in which you immerse yourself and soak in the environment in combination with a very intriguing story, then this game is very well made for you! I absolutely adore the gameplay loop and something about it is strangely addicting. Also, one of the highlights of the game are the BTs. Wandering through BT territory can be very tense and gives a nice change of pace!

Now, the reason because I don't give it a perfect score is obviously because it is NOT perfect. Sometimes, the traversal can be a bit clunky. Also, even though the story is very intriguing, I have a feeling that some elements of it are confusing just for the sake of being confusing. The thing that I hate the most though is the UI. It is incredibly un-intuitive and completely frustrating at times.

Basically you are a porter, delivering stuff to people around a post apocalyptic america. You have to plan routes, connect with different npc's, use vehicles, stealth through enemy camps, avoid or fight monsters/bosses. But the online play brings the real joy. Because you can build stuff in the world that makes traversal easier for you and other players. See a cliff? Place a rope so every player can use it for climbing. Its a really addicting part of the game. You really feel like you can accomplish something, working together.
But be warned, the first chapter takes its time to explain everything to you, after that you are already mastering most gameplay concepts.
If you like Kojima's other games you will like this as well, trust me

I knew what i was getting into when I bought this game and anyone who says they dont like the core gameplay is missing the point. This game isnt supposed to be a quick endorphin rush thrill experience that many games are offering these days (battle royales and arena pvp). Death stranding offers an experience ive never had before in a video game. Ive sometimes found myself frustrated but ive also found myself in awe of the journey. This game can only be enjoyed by people who immerse themselves into this world and story.
The story by the way, is by far the strongest element of this experience. Its the foundation that binds it all together. The story truly is like nothing ive experienced before. My only corrolation i can make is to the beautifully complex world of "Annihilation" and the jaw dropping visuals from "Bloodborne" blended together.
Playing this game is much like taking a long hike. Its a lot of effort with periodic rewards along the way, it can be difficult at times and even make you think about turning back but if you push through, and enjoy the journey for what it is, the rewards at the end of it will make the pain worth it.
If you have time, if you love a good story but want to work for it, this game is for you.

At the moment I am 40 hours into the game. I have read a lot of the negative reviews about this game and I think I would rather start by addressing the issues the game has:
    1. Annoying controls while walking: Sam is constantly moving large amounts of cargo with different weights and densities. The travel route is not always smooth and if you are hasty and run all the time, you will have a frustrating experience. You need to constantly use your scanner in order to identify the best possible path ahead of you that leads in the smoothest experience, even if it diverts from a straight path. This game requires patience. Our generation is so impatient that everyone is talking about how this game is frustrating. Maybe you should learn to be patient and you will love the game. Take a second. Think about your decisions in the game. Personally at this point I rarely have issues while walking because I have failed so many times, but now I have learnt how to handle the cargo.
    2. Annoying vehicle behaviour while traveling on a rock-y landscape: The wheels are METALLIC, NOT RUBBER. Stop driving over rocks. Metallic wheels exhibit poor grips. Think about the weaknesses of your equipment. Just because you have a vehicle, it doesn't mean you are entitled to a fast smooth travel to your destination. Ever delivery order includes a summary of the challenges en-route. Pay attention to these hints and plan ahead.
    3. It's just a walking simulator: No it isn't. Well, At the beginning there is a lot of walking which can be rewarding if you are patient and relaxed. Also, later on you will have so many amazing tools that will cut your travel time short. But even then you will miss walking and the joy of feeling the distance and the amazing views.
This game contains most genres. Death Stranding isn't designed to give you a dopamine rush throughout the entire gameplay time like Call of Duty or Fifa. Actually if you are looking for an empty cliche game that serves you the same old concept, then Death Stranding isn't for you. Death Stranding does provide thrilling scenarios balanced with relaxing walks which give you time to reflect. There are many elements including horror, 3rd person shooter, open-world exploration, stealth, infrastructure construction, harvesting materials and crafting tools, etc. Given time, you will have access to such beautiful inventory of tools.
So these were the main points about people are concerned about, which are all rooted in impatience and the urge to be satisfied. This game is a life lesson. And that lesson is "be patient and adaptive, so you can overcome the challenges". This game reflects who you are. If you don't believe me, play it with a friend of yours and you will see how different your friends approach is to yours. Death Stranding is without doubt one of the best stories ever told within one of the most beautifully crafted games.

If one breaks done the game by components, then yes, objectively the act of delivering & building things slowly is not as action-filled or super fun compared to, say, MGSV, but as a whole I find it quite captivating. Everyday I wake up wanting to play more of it.

Two minor things that I think could be improved:
    1. Short cut animations (e.g. mail delivery, drink beverage, shower) require a bit more clicks than necessary to skip. Sometimes they made it so that you have to skip 2-3 short animations for one action. I wish it would be more streamlined

    2. stealth options could be a bit better. I get it, creating a diversified combat system would distract from the main gist of the game. But still, I wish there could be 2-3 more options to take down mules out of stealth, and a slightly smoother action sequence would be nice.

Hideo Kojima managed to "deliver" (sue me) a great game outside of all the hype (and there was some HYPE). I'll tell you the truth, I was skeptical when I saw the first gameplay trailer. I was expecting something way different... and so were a LOT of people (hence the meandering / monotone "critique" this game is getting here on the hellscape that is User Reviews).

However, while the trailers that fueled us for years were strange, delectable pieces of some perfect game that doesn't exist, the actual game... Death Stranding... is surprisingly a quiet, nuanced work that is as tantalizing as it is engaging (for those who aren't complaining about just simply "walking").

Speaking of walking, the game's primary mechanics are intriguingly complex in a way that feels incredibly simple. Walking IS walking in this game, but there's so many factors that drive the way Sam walks in this game, like [A. I have too much cargo and Sam is climbing a hill and my stamina is low, so Sam is going at a snail's pace] or [B. I've equipped the exo-legs and have little cargo so I'm **** Mario double-jumping all over the place].

Like many have said, the game can get frustrating as hell, but most of the time I'm realizing I'm mad at myself for not bringing a ladder or crossing a river without checking for the density levels. Succeeding in the game takes work, and it's the kind of hours that I'm willing to put into (sorry Dark Souls). I feel great in making it to a delivery (that didn't go horribly, horribly wrong), or when I built my first bridge.

A lot of people don't like the story elements, but so far (I'm halfway through) I'm loving the story. Fragile is a badass character and the more I learn about her the more I enjoy the cut scenes with her. BB is just so **** cute. The scenes with Cliff are nice and help build for what seems to be coming later. Honorable mentions are Deadman and Mama (so far).

If you're on the fence... just play the game, see for yourself. If you're a MGS fan... play the game. Ignore those who are saying it "isn't like MGS at all". No **** it's a completely different game. All in all, I give it a 9 because it's a **** solid game, one of the best I've played in years. It has a few drawbacks, but ultimately if you're willing to get past the beginning (which I didn't feel all that boring... just some repetitive cut scenes), and feel invigorated by the gameplay mechanics, or just trying something "new", you'll love this game.

It’s a journey, maybe a little bit boring, but created with genius. Hideo Kojima is a director and a creative chief able to put the player into a universe that surround, with beautiful locations, characters, atmosphere and a strong vision of the project.

This game requires a bit of patience as it can be quite a long game, but if you are interested in the story and the world then it can make for a great time. Yes it can be slow, and you are walking for a majority of the game, but the interactions with the community playing the game, and the completely unique game mechanics have me really enjoying the game.

If your not enjoying the game at the beggining dont worry, becasue as you progress in the game a LOT of new items, weapons, and tools are unlocked allowing you to handle the terrain, the BT's, and the raiders in a variety of ways.

I do understand the complaints and i totally understand why you might not like this game, but for me its a new and fresh experience and im loving it so far.

If your not sold on the game, or a fan of Kojima, then I think you should wait for a sale and pick it up cheap in a few months.

First of all, this game isn't for everybody, not because it's 'too intelligent', or 'too deep', but because it is a slow, conceptual game, where the theme is more important than the gameplay, so if you just want to shoot someone or just curse your teammates for losing, don't waste your money and time.
For those who want to experience something different than the triple As games usually offer, give it a try.
The game is about an apocalyptic future where humanity passed the Death Stranding, and the cities started to be like 'islands', isolated from each other, because in between the cities the 'monsters', BTs, can appear all of a sudden. In this ambient delivering things between cities, being this connection, is probably the worst and more dangerous job someone can have, yet someone has to do it, so it's a little unfair to say that this game is an 'app delivery simulator' since logistic in this world is the most difficult problem humanity face. And here we have the theme 'Connection' is everywhere, I thought that maybe was a little too much, like the company name you work for is Bridges, and they talk about reconnecting the entire country, and you build and left bridges, roads, but apparently by the reviews, it wasn't enough.

It is a slow-paced game, that demands work, collaboration with people you never met, and never will, planning ahead, and constantly maintaining and rearing tasks. So to quote Rick and Morty, because just because "I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I’m bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass. Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is it’s not an adventure. There’s no way to do it so wrong you might die. It’s just work. And the bottom line is, some people are okay going to work, and some people … well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose." And part of the concept of the theme is that connection is a repetitive task, is repairing, maintaining and cleaning our relationship with others, and that reflects on the gameplay, but the best part is, you are not alone, you can help others and be helped, when you choose a path to follow but you see a sign and a bridge you remake your whole path just because someone took their time, to gather resource or ask for them and put a bridge there and that for me it's awesome.

A beautiful world, with some good comments as to how our society is growing distant with our technology that supposed to be closing the gaps. And how a little bit of work of everybody can have a great impact in the gameplay, literally the best part for me along with the music was the multiplayer, how you can help and be helped is a really nice addition that alters how you plan things and how you play at all.

Of course, i isn't a perfect game, things like the accessibility and simplicity of the menus could be improved for non-gamers since Kojima said that they were part of the target audience. The physics of the motorcycle could be improved as well, but as the rest is a great game.

I would put it as like the Animals album of Pink Floyd, as in the Animals the musicality serves the concept of the Album, and builds in it, Death Stranding does the same, the actors, graphics, music, and gameplay, are the basis of the theme of Connection of the game, without it, it can be a little boring or 'just deliver simulator' if you don't understand your part in these world as a bridge for the network of humanity.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
