As is, it sits solid at a nine out of ten which is amazing when you realize this is a first try. If you value original game-play above all then you can bump it up to a 10. Whatever you think about this game - you cannot disagree with the fact that you have never played anything like this and in an age of Triple A yearly rehash this kind of willingness to take risks is sorely needed. At the very least - wait for a sale and see what all the fuss is about. Vote with your money even if the game-play is not for you. This game rewards you for helping others. In a way it is a repeat of the same emotions people felt when they played journey. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Expand

Around 80% of the gameplay involves player to deliver cargo from point A to point B. The rest are regular boss fights, sneaking and hiding from haunting ghost like creature, and some light third person shooting.
Death Stranding offers a unique online gameplay that not generally seen by us in this gaming era. Most of the games out there encourage players to compete between each other for the top spot but Death Stranding encourages players to work together and helping each other through the tough and harsh world of death stranding.
Perhaps one of the strongest selling point for me is the rich and out of this world story. It makes me cried, laughed, and even frustrated. Watching the mysteries unfold bit by bit toward the end of the game is a tread.
It is tough to recommend Death Stranding to everyone. I would only strongly recommend to person who plays a game highly due to the rich story telling. For me, I personally think that Death Stranding is a wonderful experience that definitely made it to my top 5 game lists.

I have never been a hardcore Kojima fan but i have to say that his works are actually pleasing and often very polished, making you feel something rare.
And this is the case here, the game uses its tortured concept to question yourself constantly, like : "it is weird in our world, but is it in this one ?".
The game is made for contemplation.
The gameplay serves the experience, as usual for Kojima, it is fluid and logical to the universe you're in, while not being restrictive and remaining precise and the most important... FUN.
You are alone with a destination, you chose where you go and when. What do you take with you ? Do you travel safe, or risk it all ?
The acting is overly dramatic and it works in a Kojima scenario, take it or leave it.
Biggest flaw in my opinion is the main vilain, way too typical, still have some interesting intents through the game.
The music serves contemplation, usually absent leaving you with yourself and the world around, and strikes when it's a fitting moment.
And the most impressive, the game reinvents itself every hour, adding more mechanics with every encounter, and making you reconsider the ways you can progress.
The game is good, really good, but it is not for kids, and the fact that it is boring comes only from you and you alone. The game is not perfect, but it is very close to be, and comparing to the rest, you can keep the commercial work, i keep the work coming from the heart.

Kojima's new creation leaves a lot of interesting and necessary thoughts. I don’t even want to pay attention to the shortcomings, the plot was very impressive. a specific project that can impress very much. I am glad that such a game has appeared. An incredible soundtrack. One of the best games of my life. It has a tiring gameplay, but that makes sense within the game. The ending is quite time consuming and seems like it will never end, but in the end a sense of nostalgia sets in and a willingness to play again and be around such amazing characters.

It is a creative game, different and even innovative. It is necessary to understand the purpose of the game in order to have fun, because it is definitely not a game to please most. It's a templative game that makes you think, a game where cooperation and connection is the main focus. Brilliant story, but for fun you have to understand the proposal and play without any hurry.

The story is very interesting and unique with a deep meaning, and it may have a little problem with the pacing, but it didn't bother me that much, what bothered me were the **** holograms. When you make a delivery you get a hologram of a person that thanks you for the delivery and maybe get a reward. As you progress it starts to get repetative and boring. The other think that bothers me a bit is near the end when something happens and then you go to a place, which you can't escape, and you cannot do anything except walk for aroung 5 minutes, get tired, sit, listen a long explanation, get up and repeat that two more times. But with this out of the way i think that the gameplay is very unique and relaxing. I never felt bored walking and making deliveries. The end is beautiful and very emotional. That was my poorly structured opinion on the game. Expand

I had a slight problem with the pacing of the game though, there were moments when many of my actions felt repetitive, story started to feel boring for its simplicity during one of the first chapters for a long period of time but the speed caught up eventually and things started to be interesting again. This is an utterly unique game and if you let it take you in, it's easily the most immersive experience you will have in a video game. At times the interface and menu's are difficult, but when you realize all their quirks, you come to realize the controls are exactly what they need to be. It's a complex and relaxing game most of the time, and it takes a lot as a player to work through, but all it's difficulties and challenges highlight the one thing this game does that no other ever has, and that is theme. The theme in this game is the connections between people, and every design quirk, plot point, and arduous mountain climb all work to emphasize that theme. It's a lonely journey, but the connections you make along the way will give you a sense that it was all worth it. This isn't a game that gratifies you, this is a journey you take that pays itself off immensely in the end. Easily the best crafted ending I've seen in a game.
The most important thing I look at a game is how it stays with you, and will I play it again. I equate it most with another great narrative game whos gameplay was not enjoyable, "The Last of Us" but the difference is, the payoff in this is much more profound. This is a game that you won't ever forget, and eventually will draw you in again. In the Last of us, after the damn super zombies get shivved for the last time, I never wanted to play it again. I remember the Giraffe and the end, but nothing about the play really drew me in for a 2nd run. It's impact is totally on a first go round. This one will compel me to play again long into the future.
Yes, it can be a grind, like almost every game these days, whether it's collecting pointless garbage in any grand theft auto or any monotonous deathmatches in any first person shooter you play online. The difference is the rewards for the grind are truly there in game. These continuous missions build the relationship with each person you meet, and the rewards for maximizing that all make the journey easier. Every improvement is a blessing that you earn with hard work, and by the end you turn it into a fun Disney ride for every travel. But you have to earn it through work and with the connections you build in the game, and with the players whom leave stuff to help you out.
This isn't a game that gratifies you, its a profound amount of work for quite the compelling reward. It's a plot of **** nonsense, that makes total sense and ties together perfectly because every aspect follows one cohesive theme. This is a game for everyone, it's value comes through work, through challenges, and there is utterly nothing else like it nor will there ever be. Most negative critiques I read have complaints that show me the people didn't actually play it, just either watched someone else play it or quit because it doesn't have enough blinking lights and bright colors to satisfy the animal brain.
So go into it with an open mindset, put the weight of the world on your impossibly strong back, and take a journey that will bring you somewhere you will never experience again, and will certainly never forget.

Game is very symbol, rich with details that kept my mind always at work trying so hard to grasp as many theories they keep throwing at me.
The ideas in this game are so Grand, Big Bang, mysteries of life & death - I loved the way they used the extinction of dinosaurs & mammals and linked it to the game theme so easily.
I will never understand how people got bored when the game always renews itself, shooting becomes possible all of a sudden – it included boss fights, and the adrenaline rush episodes made only for the terrorizing Clifford Unger.
Main theme is obviously connection, and bringing people together especially while building roads and everyone contributes with little material they can spare to build for tomorrow as if it’s saying we can only live through tomorrow together and how people are as good as dead in isolation.
The Game could be also about America’s predicament, how it was meant to be a land of freedom & dreams – now it is anything but.
I think it’s based on realism – how one must make every effort brick by brick just like in the real world.
The sci-fi elements of this game just blew my mind – TimeFall causing accelerated aging, cryptobytes, and thermonuclear weapons….
Kojima is a genius who forged us a real treasure which could be the starting point of a new Genre.

Any negative feedback the game gets is due to 3 letters: TWD. People saw Daryl on a game with “Death” in the title and they bought it. It was a great marketing tool, but it worked too well, so a lot of meat-heads are trying to play a game with a character that can’t cut up zombies or toss a football. “Hulk Smash”.
So, if you enjoy Gears of War and think a gun with a chainsaw is cool, keep it up. Do what you like!

If you rubbed your eyes in the Arsenal Tengu when you were ordered to “turn the game off” - You should definitely add Kojimas’ latest work of art to your collection. And it is - a work of art. ✌

The gameplay revolves around the core mechanics of terrain navigation, melee and weapon based combat against human and super-natural enemies, managing your cargo and equipment, and building structures such as roads, generators, shelters from hazardous rain, etc.

Death Stranding is not a game for those who seek instant gratification and or have low patience. It wants you to stop and smells the roses, immerse yourself in a lonely and desolate, yet beautiful = post-apocalyptic world. The action may take a back seat for the most part, but it is still very satisfying over all. The game is very good at rewarding the player with new equipment at regular intervals to make the harsh natural landscapes easier to overcome.

The music and sound design is absolutely top notch. The soundtrack being one of the best I've ever heard, setting the tone and invoking emotion perfectly. the graphics are fantastic with smooth fluid and realistic animation. great performance with only the occasional slight frame-rate drop during fights with some of the larger monsters. Excellent performances from the actors. The writing can be great, and sometimes it can be cheesy. But i feel the cheesiness adds a certain charm. They lore of the world of Death Stranding is surprisingly deep and fleshed out and everything in the fictional world seems to have a good logic to it, And many of the gameplay mechanics seamlessly fit into the games lore. There is a slight learning curve to the controls, carrying items and handling Sams balance and weight while carrying cargo.

The first several hours are very slow and heavy on dialogue. It is necessary to understand the plot, however you have to option to skip all cutscenes if you so wish.

Death Stranding is a game i highly recommend to anyone looking to experience something new that no other game can offer.

The story as well is brilliant, well paced with enough tid-bits of information to keep you hooked throughout the duration, and completely explained in the ending, leaving no big mysteries to force a sequel that may never come.

The game mechanics while solid, can be repetitive, few enemy types and a standard way to defeat them leaves it feeling relatively simple and while that isn't the game's focus some more enemy types or some difficultly scaling would allow the game to keep the challenge toward the endgame and make side missions a more important part of the journey. With this the game feels like a mountain, the difficulty in the early game is slowly chipped away as you get new items and weapons that allow BT and Mules to become trivial over time, and while that may lead to some satisfaction, looking back down the trail you've climbed it does leave you feeling like you've beaten everything towards the end. A tip to players to increase the challenge would be to eschew weapons all together, leaving it only to your wits and resourcefulness and the way i'd recommend playing, keeping the difficulty and stealth an absolute requirement throughout the whole game, rather than being able to kick the door down in the second half.

Even saying that, the traversal itself is what makes the game, borrow from a friend and give it five hours of your time. Though if it hooked you as much as it did me, your friend may not get it back!

This game is make or break in the first 10 hours. You'll either persist through its slow pace and lengthy cutscenes, or you'll move on. This is not a game for the impatient. You really earn your perks, and when you do it feels rewarding. What Death Stranding does, is train you by keeping the pace slow to ensure you get the basics before it opens up. If you were given everything right away? You'd be overwhelmed.

In saying that, I was completely relieved when I got my first bike. Perhaps it took a bit longer than it could have? But at least I learned the basics of traversing the landscape. In saying that, I never ceased to be amazed by the graphics and amazing sights it provides.. and I don't have a 4k screen or a PS4 Pro! So anyone with those things will be even more so. It's beautiful.

You must play this online for the full experience. Having other players structures and cargo waiting for you makes it worthy. Stay connected, and keep making connections. When you see a spot which could do with a bridge? Build one. Think of others, because that's how you and others benefit.

It's a grand team effort, and the game does a wonderful job portraying this without you physically seeing another player. I just wish others wouldn't leave their vehicles in the worst spots imaginable! Lol. But that's how it goes, take the good with the bad.

Enemies -- They are daunting at first, but once you figure 'em out it's not so bad. I played this on Normal difficulty and only went to the seam once (outside storyline instances) because I fell off a bridge while being attacked.

BT's are fine if you are patient. If you get caught? Frantically run out of the circle outlined in the map to escape; or beat the monster. Boss battles were fun! Although not as challenging (predictable AI) than those in MGS. The true enemy in this game? Is the environment making you fall over! That and inventory management (Auto-Arrange helps). There's some degree of frustration and regret when things go wrong.

Quests -- If you don't like fetch quests? Then DS isn't for you. There are some exceptions, but the vast majority are like this. Now I've finished the game.. I can safely say you don't need to 5-star every outpost. It's nice if you want an Ultra Rare trophy, but if you don't care? At least try and get most of 'em in to the UCA so you can make use of others structures/signs. Also, roads are awesome! I built 'em all.. but it's an arduous task gathering materials for every strip. Do it if you have the time, but otherwise it's not essential.

Structures -- I found bridges in good spots get the most amount of likes, as well as building roads. Zip lines didn't for some reason, even though they are very useful (more so in snowy areas). Generators are also really good if no one has built any near an outpost.

Support Characters -- I didn't feel as connected to them as I hoped; all except BB and probably Deadman. For spoiler purposes I won't say anymore, but I do wish they had more personality; although it's hard to stay positive in a post-apocalyptic world. Heartman's cool also.

Story -- Vintage Kojima. The MGS games were the same as they kept you guessing and it will grow on people. They used the word 'beach' a bit too often and repeated dialogue, but overall it keeps you guessing to the last second. It really makes you think hard long after you finished. I love the positive message of connecting with others.

No, the game is not perfect. Can it get boring/repetitive at times? Yes, but it's a truly unique experience which clearly took a ton of effort. Definite recommend. Hideo Kojima, if you see this? I got a star waiting here with your name on it. Let me go set up a zipline or two so you can get here easier. Also *100 likes* to Norman Reedus. Love him in Walking Dead and in this game. It's understandable why Death Stranding is not for many people, given its gameplay concept of delivering cargo to places. But if one can buy into it, like I did, then it will be a most memorable experience. But if one can buy into it, like I did, then it will be a most memorable experience. The presentation of the game is phenomenal, it shows that Kojima is still at his usual form for crafting unique and cinematic games. I actually enjoyed the act of playing this game because of how unique it is. It was almost relaxing to walk across the rough terrain as Sam Porter Bridges. The mechanics are simple and effective for the most part. Managing the cargo can be a pain at times, but if the game and its world make that connection with you it will be merely an aspect of the gameplay and not a flaw. The game definitely isn't perfect technically, it could use some tidying up in areas, such as organizationally in accessing materials and obtaining vehicles. So the cargo management in this sense has its flaws. The combat is pretty fun, though it is quite easy and one-dimensional at times. For instance, using stealth in 'Mule' sections never really presented itself as an option to me. I almost always had to fight them directly, so that became sort of tedious and monotonous. But aside from the problems, the real emphasis of the game anyway is in its mysterious and thought-provoking story and world. The characters you meet are highly realized and have interesting back stories that you uncover. The atmosphere of the world is incredible, with great sound and visuals. The 'BT' encounters are eerie and intense. The whole game forms into an impressive work of art. If you can find the time to stick with it, as it will draw on and on (though it never gets dull), the final chapters of the game might be the greatest part of the game. It is worth playing to the end because of how satisfyingly the game ties itself up. This is probably one of the most under appreciated games I've played. But again, this statement only has validity to those who don't abhor the gameplay. It requires a different mindset to play than your typical shooting game. It challenged me and made me think in a way that no other game has. It's not for everyone and at times I didn't really love it, but its original style and feel made me appreciate the experience. The gameplay revolves around the main character Sam "porter" Bridges (Norman Reedus) in a post apocalyptic world where Porters (delivery men) are humanities last connection to eachother and the only way to get vital supplies and resources in a world thats too dangerous or treachorous for your average person to undergo. In this world there are BT's (essentially ghost) that liter areas where timefall (rain that ages whatever it touches) pours down and turn the game into a stealthy crawl as you evade detection from these otherworldly human shadows that can only be seen while standing still. This provides areas of tension where you'd like to rush through as quick as possible to avoid damage to whatever packages you may be carrying but detection means you're in for a fight and will have to worry about being dragged off into a battle with a large enemy while losing your gear. This brings me to the combat which is by far the games weakest point. Thd combat against other humans ehich are rogue Porters crazed by packages or something like that basically they want your packages and will try to kill you with guns and various other weapons the catch is you can't kill them you can only knock them out because killing them would create more BT's and make your life harder. This makes the combat rather annoying as you only have limited options to deal with them dispite having access to handguns, assault rifles and even rocket launchers later in the game. This is helped a little by the addition of non-lethal weapons but thats not nearly as fun right. The BT's are far worse of an enemy though. They will often times be just small humans and upon detection you can use various weapons designed for taking them out but the only thing that works is grenades. This again makes combat feel terrible and makes you just want to be as stealthy as possible with 140kg of gear on your back. The story though is where this game really shines without giving any spoilers the cinimatics are top tier just like you'd expect in a Kojima game. If the gameplay doesn't keep you the story most certainly will. If the combat was better i'd give it a perfect score. I just wish they had a new game+ in it so i wouldn't lose all of my time consuming structures i built Expand

It can be slow, especially in the early stages. The main character is an everyman thrust into a role he doesn't want, and there are few moments of heavy payoff through a game that can take 50 to 100 hours. It is a slow burn with a story that is at times convoluted and often hidden in optional messages in the menu, but if you are willing to take a back seat and try to actually connect to the vast world, it will pay off by the end. Just make sure you have a few hours set aside - it's a long ending!

The characters are well-designed with typical-for-Kojima cheesy nicknames and sometimes heartfelt backgrounds to said nicknames. There is a disconnect in how many times you see a hologram instead of an actual character, but this is a nonissue in a post-apocalyptic story where the weather and landscape has become deadly. The sluggish nature of the weight distribution system does make up a lot of the gameplay, but the sluggishness gives each delivery a feeling of actual weight - this isn't just counting numbers until you have maxed your encumbrance, there are multiple parameters to each package to be considered There's even a hotkey for those who aren't interested in manually organizing. Stick around long enough and the clunky menu doesn't feel so clunky- it pays off by the midgame when you know your best load out and are hauling 12-20 medium size packages with ease.

Death Stranding requires patience through a large prologue. Enemies are sparse and seemingly unbeatable until progress is made, and the time it takes to walk the various open ended delivery routes can be daunting... but you soon unlock multiple vehicles and equipment that make the initial 20-minute hikes into five minute rides. The real gameplay doesn't even start until the second city is visited, a spot that a huge amount of people stopped playing at - based on PSN trophies as of April 2020, 43% of players completed the third chapter of a 14 chapter game. For reference the first boss fight is chapter four. Only 28% finished the game entirely.

These numbers should be significant - everyone is entitled to an opinion but how can reviewers judge a game they likely didn't finish? Take the time to get involved with Death Stranding. Put yourself in Sam's sometimes frustrating boots, don your harmonica, and spend some quality time with your BB, dammit! If you're up for it, Death Stranding will absorb you.

Video game design has grown stale, games are getting more expensive to make and publishers always choose to go with the same proven formula for gameplay and storytelling, they cannot afford to take risks on such massive investments.
This game is not perfect but it introduces so many unique concepts, it is a needed breath of fresh air, something different.
The gameplay did not bother me, things remained interesting until the end, i loved the different gadgets and weapons you can make and the planning required for the toughest journeys.
The online aspects helped keep things fresh and i really enjoyed it but there is no way of entering a strand contract with a friend, that is a shame.
Some people have pointed out the blatant product placement (Monster), i don't mind it, at least the game is not full of predatory microtransactions.

Bottom line is that the game deserves 9/10, not because it is good, but because it is unique and interesting.

Great game, like few. Well done in plot, graphics, music, menus, recitation of actors, game play. Very amusing to play.
Not so strange like a lot of people says.
A normal game, but top of quality.

The emotional depth thanks to Kojima's storytelling and craziness makes for an awesome experience! Especially one of the most emotionally draining plot twists ever in video game history hits you in the face. However, the pacing especially over the mountain is tedious. Also the game is too easy - almost a masterpiece.

O jogo é envolvente , diferente de tudo que já joguei , e é justamente o que o faz um bom jogo , sendo o que ele tem que ser.

Frustrating, but also very satisfying. It's strange how this game can cause both emotions to co-exist. It's also quite reassuring to know (and see through structures) that you're not playing alone. The landscape is chilling and terrifying, and the long stretches you have to traverse by foot really make your adrenaline pump when you encounter BTs.

Death Stranding stands tall as a well-crafted and unique piece of art. It's not the first game I'd choose if I was looking for some nonstop, fast-paced action, and I understand some people's gripes with that. But what it does present is an honest, thought provoking story combined with a endlessly beautiful landscape to explore. But what it does present is an honest, thought provoking story combined with a endlessly beautiful landscape to explore. The atmosphere in this game is like no other, and many times throughout my playthrough I found myself sort of wandering around like I was in my own Denis Villeneuve film, admiring the vast and empty landscape. Death Stranding really made me feel a lot of different emotions. Every now and then a shiver would send down my spine, whether it be in amazement or fear. No matter how strange and "Kojima-esque" the narrative got, I was still completely engaged throughout. All of the actors' outstanding performances (a special "Bravo!" for my man, Norman Reedus) were complimented by an excellent script that truly provided an unforgettable video game experience. Although the boss fights were few and far between, every single one of them was hauntingly unique (the shots of the boss in the downtown battle are *chefs kiss*). The soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in a while, adding so much emotional weight to the story. Death Stranding is truly unlike any other video game you will play. For some people, that's a good thing, and for others it's not. You be the judge.

People hate what they don't understand. Everything is perfect in this game. You don't have to play casual action games all time.

I've being avoiding Death Stranding since its release due to its mild reception. I'm playing it now and near the end, and I'm having such a great time with it. It's definetely meant for a niche audience, but that's okay. Truly a masterpiece in the right meaning of the word: a piece of art that despite any flaws will remain in the test of time. This game is a masterpiece however not for everyone, the review scores have went up for this game once people started actually playing the game instead of trashing on it without any experience.

The story is great, the score is beautiful, the gameplay can be sluggish at times and repetitive however the imagery and mise en scène help pace the gameplays worst moments. As Kojimas first

The story is great, the score is beautiful, the gameplay can be sluggish at times and repetitive however the imagery and mise en scène help pace the gameplays worst moments. As Kojimas first proper release as an independent studio and a brand new narrative this game exceeds the traditional barriers of game development pushing narrative and storytelling in gaming even further, Even in its worst moments Death Stranding always shines, from traversing the horrors of a BT infested field to travelling to WW1 & WW2 to traversing the snowy mountains this game offers players a unique experience for gaming.

I like the graphics, the gameplay and the story. It's hard to get into at first, but once you start discovering the many structures and how to use them, you start having more fun. It's a creative way to approach the open world genre.

The dialogs are not the best, and there is repetition in the missions but the improvements that we unlock changes our way of doing. Not for everyone but on me it really worked

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
