I'm really surprised at how much this game drew me in.

It starts out as quite a slog but as the game adds new options and abilities the game play switches from struggle to optimizing.

The world is cool, the story was interesting, abstract but understandable.

I wasn't a fan of Kojima's previous games, but something drew me towards this one. With Death Stranding, you get more of an interesting and somewhat drawn out story, which is facilitated by playing a game. With Death Stranding, you get more of an interesting and somewhat drawn out story, which is facilitated by playing a game. The main gameplay is surprisingly good, sometimes fun, always challenging and very repetitive. Yet it never gets old and I am not 100% sure why, as at its heart, it is a walking simulator (and the only walking simulator that accurately emulates it perfectly) combined with some unique and innovation game mechanics. It's almost like playing a racing car game and doing 2000 laps around the same track for 40-60 hours. You do the same things for the entire game, but little small nuances make it seem fresh with each mission.

This is definitely a very unique experience, and those looking for a fast paced game may find it a struggle to keep engaged. It kept me engaged due to the atmosphere of the world, the great selection of music, the uncertainty of what exactly is going on and the unique feel of the game. There is nothing like this and in the current climate of games, where the same crap is recycled over and over again, this stands out as a truly innovative game.

There are times I was frustrated with the game, some missions require you to walk for 50 mins only to drop off the delivery and be asked to go right back to where you came from and come back here with another delivery. This for me hurt the game already slow pacing and made it frustrating as it was delaying the progress of the game and really felt like pointless padding. Another issue is you can't skip cut scenes, Having to watch the same machine process a package over 100 times gets old after about the third time and some of the cut scenes run close to 1 hour. There is close to 10 hours of story specific cut scenes, which for me was about 5 hours too much. The stretching out of conversations adds nothing to the experience and creates a disconnect as people don't talk like this. There is bad stuff happening and spreading fast, but lest just you as many sentences as we can, to just some so very simple things.

I didn't find the story mysterious at all, interesting yes, but I picked up on two things very early in the game which turned out to be true. Maybe I was just able, somehow, to see through the over elaborate drawn out story telling methods used, which were meant to hide things but it all seemed pretty obvious to me.

The sum of all the parts that make Death Stranding are very good. It's by no means a 10/10. The map system should be more usable and have a better zoom feature, the UI at times is not user friendly especially in combat situations and an editor was needed to cut down the over indulgent cue scenes and tell Kojima when enough was well and truly enough. I wouldn't recommend this game to everyone, especially people that only enjoy fast paced action games, but they would be missing out on something that is a bit special, very unique and innovative. I have no doubt it will become a masterpiece in time while possibly becoming one of the most studied games ever, and will most likely win 2019's game of the year.

You need to give the game a chance. I quit after 10 hours because I thought it was boring, but this is actually when it starts to pick up and I realized this after restarting the game a year later. If you can make it to the second area and continue for a bit, you'll get hooked, and greatly rewarded with an emotionally provoking story that relates to our world situation in 2020. Once you have adjusted to the mechanics and have some of the better tools in your possession, it becomes very fun, and the story is just mysterious enough to keep you going. The mechanics are something I haven't seen in any other game, and I feel that the risks attempted in this game need to be applauded for stepping outside the norm. The game is beautiful, but it could be much better if played on PC. There are a few tools I never really found a use for.

After finishing the game it seems there is probably 20-30 more hours of content to complete, which also reveals more details for some of the main characters. I'd recommend at least getting a used copy and give it a chance. You need to have some patience with this title. It is not for someone that's used to Fortnite/Call of Duty. This is a thinking man's game.

Finished Chapter 2, enjoying so far. All the bad reviews? Many of them are true. But these flaws doesn't really bother me because it's a game we rarely get these days: a true auteur game. This game gives you a world and characters you won't get from a typical AAA title and this why I'm willing to forgive all the little game play issues.

I would say this is one of the more polished and better games of 2019.

Yes it's a very beautiful game and yes the story is confusing until a point but that is sort of expected from a hideo Kojima game. I seriously do look forward to the next game that he makes but I hope it isn't another Death Stranding.

The great thing about it is, you connect to other people and share all the structures you have built as well as donate weapon/equipment/materials. You don't need PSN plus for this.

Pro-tip, finish the story first before doing side quests (you can take that ones that are near the next story location); progressing through the story increase the world immersion, thus making delivery less of a chore.

The story is amazing! I can't say much without spoiling it but the ending felt so satisfying and there's only a few strings left untied but they aren't that important in this story.
Pay extra attention to the cutscenes as i missed some bits and had to read up on it later (small bits like certain colours appearing, little trinkets i missed, etc).

My only gripe is the vehicle traction as most times it's very hard to travel on tough terrain (although the vehicles themselves tell you they are not built for rough terrain). It's like Kojima said no to vehicles and wants to actively waste your time walking at snail pace.

Amazing and satisfying game by Kojima! really makes you wonder how mgsv would've turned out if kojima got to finish it properly. I hope Kojima can do something similar to the cancelled PT, would love to see his take on horror.

I am blown away by the depth of the world-building, characterization, and sophistication in Death Stranding. Unsurprisingly, this level of plot construction takes some time build up, not unlike any great odyssey or large-scale fantasy. It feels not dissimilar to the vibes of Bird-Box, Postman, Final Fantasy Spirits Within. It plays a little like MGS5 without emphasizing the violence, although it has a very complex system to learn and gradually build upon. Bottom line: We have plenty of formulaic games already, I tip my hat to Kojima team for making something new and fascinating. I completely understand why some people may hate it, but for me, I thought it was really cool. And god damn that soundtrack is amazing.

Death Stranding is an artistic masterpiece with advertisement stickers slapped onto it. Don't get me wrong, the game is excellent, and I hope that elements of this game become incorporated in many future games. But there are a few aspects to the game that almost threw this game off the rails.
    --1st the positive:
The graphics, oh my goodness the graphics were superb, and make the game an excellent capstone to the PS4 generation.
The acting by the cast was excellent. The actors really draw you in and make you feel connected to the story, which is great given the abstract nature of the story.
The balancing system has revolutionized the way a player navigates the map. Until THIS GAMES, map navigation for games was little more than point in a direct then press up. Now, the weight you carry and the direction you take really matters, and makes a player feel connected to the world in the way other games simply haven't done before. Which also plays nicely into the core theme of the game: connection.
Using every aspect of the controller. Need to sooth your BB? Gently rock the controller. Not sure if you are going the right way in those mountains, quick toggle the map with the touch pad. And don't forget to keep your fingers and thumbs ready at all times to keep balance as you explore. How is your BB doing btw, just listen to the sounds emitting from the controller, which is usually held close to a players torso, just where the BB is on Sam. This really helps the player feel the game, not just look at it.
The use of objects developed by other players that are randomly placed in the map makes the player feel connected to the rest of the death stranding community, and doesn't make the player feel so lonely, and gives the game a perspective that we are not in the great quest alone. There is a real sense of community even though it is a single player game.
--2nd the not so positive (or downright negative):
The maps are so cluttered with rock that use of vehicles is almost pointless until you've played the game a while and developed roads or at least become very familiar with the terrain on foot, which can take a very long time, but the vehicles are introduced right away in the game, making them seem like a pointless use of resources.
The story is heavily backloaded to the end of the game. So a lot of what is going on seems convoluted, which I understand it was the intent to give the game some narrative twists for excitement, but the game at times seems so convoluted that it's just downright confusing at times, and distracts from a sense of purpose, making the game seem to drag on without a point at times.
(SPOILER) There should have been a stronger connection to the character of Mama. The main character Sam lost his wife and daughter, that is made clear in the very beginning. One might think that meeting someone else who lost a child would have more to talk about. And since meeting Mama is about half way through the game, a stronger connection would have helped to improve Sams character development. Since he does like being touched, having physical contact, even just a hug would serve to show Sams progression at this point, instead of just dropping it in at the end as "Well, I guess you don't have your phobia anymore. SURPRISE!".
Lastly, the shameless product placement. Thank goodness it is limited to just one area, the shelters where Sam rests and cleans up. But the use of Monster Energy Drinks and an advertisement for another Norman Reedus show is distracting to say the least, and in a game this beautiful it seems almost downright disgusting. It pulls the player out of the game. And while there are several points where the game seems to break the 4th wall, this is by far the worst way to do it. I feel like someone dropped their hotdog on the Mona Lisa and got ketchup and mustard all over it. Honestly, if the rest of the game wasn't so incredible and spectacular, this one thing would have ruined it for me. If it wasn't for this, I would have easily given this game a 9/10 or 10/10. I personally hope Kojima Productions makes enough money from this game to never have to even think about making that same mistake again.

After years of tremendous hype and great expectations from gamers, Death Stranding is here and has polarized people. It's rather ironic for a game whose themes are about uniting the world. Ironic, but also unavoidable thanks to some curious design decisions from Hideo Kojima.

Death Stranding is a different kind of experience. It uses elements from other established genres (open world design, driving, shooting, crafting, etc.), but also focuses on other aspects that haven't been touched by most (if not all) other games out there. I'm talking about human connections. What I mean is this: on other games you meet side characters, complete a few errands for them, and then forget about them altogether. On Death Stranding you meet insignificant side characters, too, but you form a connection with them, and even start worrying about some of them. Can't explain why is this happening, maybe all those emails you get from them as you progress the story triggers that kind of emotion and mentality. For example, one side character is an old man needing medicine and can also die if you leave him without meds for a long time, so it's another worry for the player. Other than NPCs, you also get likes from other real players roaming the same area as you and using the structures you left behind. Likewise, you can use structures left behind by other real players. It's an asymmetrical online system clearly inspired by the Souls/Bloodborne games.

The game's story is a mix of sci-fi, philisophy and human tragedy. The story itself is fine, full of typical Hideo Kojima twists and turns, but many people will be left scratching their heads. The game's overall atmosphere (a blend of tranquility and horror) is great. The actors do a great job, although it's clear they didn't have as much time to shoot their scenes as it's possible on movies. Hideo Kojima has created some fantastic characters with interesting backstories, but some of them end up being a disappointment (particularly Higgs, voiced by Troy Baker, and Fragile, voiced by Lea Seydoux). The world building though is almost flawless.

Now let's go to the big elephant in the room, gameplay. The main routine is to deliver packages from point A to point B. Simple as that. But the trick is in traversing the environment. As you walk around, you have to balance the weight of the cargo you are carrying, and also use the tools at your disposal to cross a chasm, descend a big vertical drop, etc. Basically the environment is a puzzle you have to solve in order to proceed to the next mission - or rather, delivery.

Combat exists in this game but it's limited (and also highly discouraged due to the game's lore of avoiding death at all costs). Enemies are either humans willing to rob you of your cargo, or supernatural beings called BTs that can catch you and force you to fight some weird creatures in a shifting landscape. But to be honest, the boss fights of Death Stranding are a huge let down. They could have been something special, especially the Mads Mikkelsen sections, but the way they have been implemented is mediocre at best. Slow to respond, easy to avoid, just spam them with bullets (or even just leave the area and the fight stops). Only 2 fights in the end are something approaching a true boss fight, but don't expect anything that matches Hideo Kojima's past accomplishments.

Now this game's been ridiculed with all kinds of memes, such as walking simulator, postman simulator, etc. which is nonsense and as pointless as branding Call of Duty a "pull-the-trigger" simulator or FIFA a "score-a-goal" simulator. Each game is its own kind of experience, and Death Stranding has its own identity. It doesn't have to appeal to everyone in order to be considered good. And that's why it's polarized gamers. People were expecting something and got another, although they were never promised anything in the first place.

On the technical side, Death Stranding is a luxurious production. You'll get some of the best graphics on the PS4 and one of the most memorable OSTs in recent memory. And even though it's only running at 30 fps, input lag is surprisingly low.

Overall, Death Stranding is a unique experience. Just like any of Hideo Kojima's past works, the journey to get from Death Stranding's announcement to its release was memorable and almost as significant as the game itself actually launching and being played by gamers. Unfortunately it won't appeal to everyone. Give this game a try if you are bored of modern AAA games recycling same old same things and also trying to rip you off with loot boxes and microtransactions. If you just want to endlessly and mindlessly shoot and punch enemies like you do on every other game out there, Death Stranding unfortunately isn't for you.

Not without glaring flaws this game illustrates the massive growing divide within gaming as seen with its review scores.

By itself Death Stranding is a great and complex story built around a highly repetitive and mostly tedious gameplay mechanic. That mechanic however reinforces the narrative progression.

You see on one hand reviewers fawn over it because the story is good. Maybe not for the average summer blockbuster movie goer, but if you appreciate thought provoking, nuanced story telling with depth and complexity its one of the best stories in a video game. However to get to that content you will have to drag yourself along a particularly tedious road of repetitive and elementary game play.

Narrative it makes perfect sense and it helps add to the world building aspect but its on par with understanding the inherent beauty of a fractal by working through the mathematical computations required to make it exist.

On the other hand you see reviewers absolutely eviscerate it citing boring and repetitive delivery quests. These are the same types of gamers who any game you put in front of them will skip all the cut scenes to get to the game play mechanics, then wonder why the game they played was unsatisfying.

The irony is that all game play mechanics are repetitive and tedious regardless of the game. Especially if there is no motivation to do them over and over and over again. What "fun" is there to be had in doing the same thing you've literally done a thousand times before. Einstein defined what that is quite aptly. So it is strange to see these ethletes complaining about how boring a game like this is when all they are seeking out is the most boring and uninteresting element of any video game in the first place.

So Death stranding is a good game. It simply is not a good game for everybody. It is a good story driven game for gamers. It has absolutely nothing of interest for ethletes who are just killing time till the next CoD/D2/Forkknife patch is released.

Ultimately the game would have been better received had it been scaled back in scope and paced better. The game is simply too long. Thus needed cutting out a huge chunk of unneeded run time for a playthrough. Somewhere at about a 10-15 hour jaunt would have been much more ideal for this sort of adventure. With such revision the public response would have been infinitely more positive than what we got.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm addicted to this game. I've clocked 55 hours and is currently on chapter 6. There's is actually a LOT you can do, see, learn, and explore. It's not just a walking simulator like many people are trying to hate it for. All these people are hoping the game be something that it isn't. I can see why some people won't like the game, but the length some people go to HATE on the game is very unwarranted.

All these people giving it anything less than a 2/10 is a hater. I can guarantee it. I've read over a few hundred bad reviews and they ALL say the same things without providing much explanation or elaboration: It's a "Walking simulator" or "It's boring" or "It's over-hyped'

No, it's not a walking simulator, that's an oversimplification. Call of Duty is just a "Gun Simulator." Super Mario is just a "Jumping Simulator" and Tetris is just an "Organizaing Simulator." It says nothing. They're missing the forest for the trees. The game started VERY slow and boring, seemingly because of poor design. However, 10-15 hours in it picks up drastically. Once the game picks up I became appreciative of the boring 10-15hr start. I realized that the beginning was designed for you to feel lonely, weak, and slow with struggles.

The story is not too complex but is very interesting and unique. It's not cliche or "rinse and repeat" type of story. Overall this game is doing it's own thing and not trying to be something else. The heart of this game lies in the background: being alone but not feeling alone. It's not meant to be another typical shooter or hack-n-slash game that is all flashy but not substance. I find the most fun in helping other players, making their journey easier while exploring new and breath-taking territories. I love the rush of the challenge each new landscape brings.

People who like fps or hack-n-slash won't like this game. People who like puzzle, adventure, survival, and networking will like this game. The one thing that is for certain is it is not the easiest game starting out which is partially why the reviews are so polarizing. I can see many people quitting the game before it gets better. For me, I'll probably easily spend over 100hrs at the rate I'm playing.

There are a TON of reasons why this game is better than it's not and people are too quick to overlook that.

    PROS:
    - Amazing cinematography, animation, graphics.
    - New gameplay style.
    - Attention to details, humor, sarcasm, jokes, and secrets.
    - Unique and clever combat and strategy. (You can throw a blood grenade, then shoot real bullets through it to coat it in blood, turning a normal gun into a "blood" gun that can damage BTs.
    - Very cool and interesting world design. Rain, sun, snow, rocks, etc all have a role to play. Each slope, hill, mud, and rocks have different feel, risk, and factors that you have to consider when passing through. Unlike most games where you just run to your destination without any thought.
    - Amazing like and networking system that make you feel like you're contributing to something more although you're playing alone.
    - Great music and sound.
    - A TON of game play.
    - The list goes on and on

    CONS:
    - Can get repetitive at some points.
    - Slow starting
    - The chiro network locations feel a bit random and inorganic. A photographer lives alone in -30 temperature, a doctor lives on the side of a mountain, a collector is somewhere near a bunch of BTs and a voidout for no reason.

If you're still on the fence about this game, allow me to give you an objective opinion that isn't a review bomb like some of the 6k negative reviews littering this section.

First, let me give you some context here. Out of the 14,000+ user reviews post, approximately 58.6% of these people played PAST the second chapter. That translates to 4 out of every 10 player reviewers quit around 10 hours in. And if you look at the user stat score, that number holds true. (stats provided by Sony themselves through trophies earned). This review is coming from someone that's placed 57 hours into this title and I actually have a fairly good handle on the topic at hand.

Now, make no mistake, this game is a lot of traveling around, walking, transporting goods and equipment. It's also a world builder. Meaning you'll be salvaging materials, collecting items, raiding NPC camps (known as MULEs) to build roads, structures and to advance the game. It is essentially a third person take on sim building only you're in avatar form with some conflicts. (Think Minecraft only with better graphics)

The story by and large is missed out on the 42% that quit after finishing chapter 2. The story (without spoiling anything) is a perspective commentary on everything that's wrong in social media, society as a whole and the perceived "advancement" of civilization in the digital age. It gives you an honest take on what separates us a country, as a culture and as people in general. So many of these fools expected a fancy gun play, a spiritual successor to Silent Hills or a dark and gritty action/adventure game. And even though I personally didn't follow every press release or watch every trailer, I knew this would be different because I understood the mind the game was coming from.

Hideo Kojima always prized a non-violent approach to problem solving yet knew that wouldn't sell. That's why in the Metal Gear games you could always go guns blazing, but the games were built prizing non-violent solutions over straight killing. The same things goes with Death Stranding.

What frustrates the "Western audience" is the fact that every top selling game hits quick gun play, values body counts, and treasures rare loot. That's the model now. And, that's what sells. The stories (as thin as they are) are built around characters people can project themselves into. That's not the case in Death Stranding.

Let me give you some advice. If the review you're reading ONLY mentions "it's a walking simulator" or "it's nothing but fetch quests." Do yourself a favor and ignore them. Because that's a hot take on the first 10 hours of the game at minimum. If they don't mention bike riding, truck driving or exoskeletons, they didn't play past chapter 2!

This game has a solid story. Gameplay and battles with MULEs and BTs are fairly fulfilling, and those so called Fetch quests lead to better gear. You're doing yourself a disservice by not playing the game in its entirety. It's not a flawless game. But it is good. I haven't even mentioned how timefall affects the game and structures over the 57 hours I've played! It IS that deep.

Death Stranding is captivating and intriguing from the offset. You're thrown into a bizarre apocalyptic United States that is never too obtuse in its weirdness, but rather strange and beautiful enough to make the basic act of traversing from point A to point B an interesting and challenging task.

It's core gameplay loop of delivering items in an attempt to reconnect the country is deeper than it may initially appear, and as you progress through the game more avenues of traversal are opened up, so you'll soon be doing much more than just walking. That said, even when you are just walking it's more engaging than it sounds, and the combination of gorgeous Iceland-inspired geology and sporadic Low Roar needle drops punctuate the experience.

The story, worldbuilding and characters are top notch in Death Stranding. Despite some iffy dialogue, the narrative is enjoyable and bolstered by some great performances, in particular from Troy Baker and Mads Mikkelsen, who shine as Higgs and Cliff respectively. The cinematography in some cutscenes is frankly amazing too.

I do have some gripes with the game. Sometimes the mechanics feel a little janky, especially when climbing or colliding with terrain. The combat and boss fights weren't as strong as they could've been, and the gunplay is just so-so. Death Stranding is quite a long title and it's core gameplay loop can get repetitive after a while - getting all facilities up to a 5 star connection is quite a grind, and one that I've not seen through. After the story concludes and the credits roll, continuing to rebuild America becomes less compelling.

One little thing I wish was included in the game is a portable music player - the music featured in Death Stranding is excellent and I wish you could play it wherever you wanted, not just while resting in a private room. The sound design is spot on but having a music player may have benefited the lonelier stretches of gameplay.

Still, I think this is a great game and one that is a refreshing deviation from the norm. It exists in its own space, and it's uniqueness makes it a game well worth trying. The social features are fantastic; knowing that your contributions to the game world make an impact on other player's journeys is rewarding in a way I've not experienced before. The game's message of unity permeates through the story and all facets of the gameplay.

It's a very original, memorable title, unlike other AAA games on the market, and I'm glad I took the plunge and gave it a go. At the end of my playthrough, I can safely say that this is a game that I really enjoyed.

While the game plays out like a futuristic sci-fi take on UPS, it's also quite intriguing. However, those expecting an open-world action title are bound to be disappointed. This isn't Metal Gear Solid or like anything else you might've ever played. That's what makes it so unique and quite special. Now whether you can get on board with what Kojima is selling is another thing. As Sam Porter Bridges, the player's job is to deliver packages in a desolate apocalyptic land. So you travel from Point A to Point B throughout the entire 50 hour experience. Yes, it sounds boring and it will be for many players. But fans of experimental and artistic video games will probably like Death Stranding, if not downright love it. This wholly original creation is bizarre, goofy, slow-paced and highly-cinematic. The story is convoluted and the gameplay can get repetitive. But as you progress, new mechanics open up and the tale gets more involving. Visually, this is one of the most beautiful games ever. Is it a masterpiece? No. If fact, it won't be very entertaining for many gamers. But as an original, Death Stranding stands out from the rest of the crowd. If you like Japanese Anime, offbeat comic-books and science-fiction, then this is for you. I'd rate it with an 8.1 out of 10. Expand

It's a new IP/story about a delivery man named Sam Porter Bridges going on a journey to reconnect the United Cities of America after a destructive worldly event called the Death Stranding, facing terrorists and other worldly beings called BT's. This game starts off slow, resulting a sluggish beginning and taking a while to kick it up a notch after about 7-10 hours, but when you get passed that point, the game becomes routinely addictive and fun to play when it comes to avoiding Mules and BT's, and delivering containers and packages across a very beautiful landscape. The terrain is vast and full of beauty, giving you a sense of peace while treversing it and the soundtrack that Kojima picked for this game is great, giving you a sense of immersion.

Gameplay is a bit of a mixed bag. Clearly Death Stranding isn't meant to be an action game like the Metal Gear franchise, but more of a social single player story experience. The social strand system is one of the high points. Getting to help make a better world by building structures to help other players travel across this world is something I absolutely love about this game. Giving likes and keeping the game positive is something we dont always get, especially in huge AAA titles. The downside is how combat is implemented with some clunky gameplay mechanics, and the lack of difficulty with the enemy AI. Also, it's disappointing not seeing a lot of actual people and instead being greeted by a hologram through most of the game.

The story in my opinion is weirdly paced through the game but is ultimately satisfying seeing how the story concludes. The characters for the most part are well written with some cringy moments, but overall are worth investing your time in seeing how things turn out for these characters. With a shift in big AAA titles leaning more and more towards multiplayer, microtransaction filled, live service games trying to play it safe, Death Stranding takes risks in not only being a new IP, but gives one of the most unique experiences you will come across this generation. I know this game isn't meant for everyone but I'm certainly happy with my time playing Death Stranding.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Slow Burn That Eventually Cooks Up Something Delicious.

There are many things in gaming that have given me trouble over the years. Grinding towards a seemingly unattainable item, getting inexplicably lost, or trying to beat a boss on the hardest difficulty before inevitably realizing that I suck and have to go back to casual.

One thing that has never been on that list until Death Stranding: Walking. Few things make you appreciate the art of staying upright like falling over for the 20th time and watching your cargo break and scatter.

From the beginning, the game starts off slowly and painfully. You don’t know what’s going on, you can barely navigate the map without tumbling down a hillside, and there are ghost-like “BTs” roaming the map which you are defenseless against, and they’re ready to f**k your day up and ruin some poor SOBs pizza delivery.

A few hours in though, the game finally starts to turn a corner. Things that were once dreadfully tedious and painful suddenly become easier as you slowly acquire new gear to help you along your way. And just when you think you’ve gotten all the gear you could possibly get, a new item shows up at the exact moment when you were getting fed up with something. And then that happens 10 more times. Each time adding layer upon layer to the experience, slowly building what felt like an empty experience and gameplay into a deep, rich, nuanced journey.

And throughout this journey, the narrative of Sam the Delivery Man and the “Death Stranding” world he inhabits envelopes you and draws you into its many, many layers of mystery. Although there are perhaps a few holes, the overall narrative of Death Stranding is incredibly deep and complex. It’s a story that keeps on giving. And giving. And giving. So much so that when I thought I was close to the end of the game, it turns out there were still 10 hours left to go.

The ending did feel a little bit drawn out (almost two hours of cut scenes!!!!). It might have been nice for some parts of the plot to wrap up earlier as the story progressed. But there was understandably a lot of narrative to unpack.

Other than that, the fighting and gunplay left a little bit to be desired, but this wasn’t the focus of the game and there are so so many other FPS titles you could play if that’s what you’re looking for.

Death Stranding is shallow and empty (by design), until it isn’t. In the end, the overwhelming amount of satisfaction you will feel as you finally start to conquer the empty, cruel world that you inhabit is worth the effort. Oh yeah and then there’s that test tube baby strapped to your chest the whole time.

Death Stranding is neither a 10 nor a 0 it is surely something in between for the better or worse depending on how open minded you are and which game style you prefer. Actually I did not want to buy it but still did and wanted to check it out myself after all those reviews appeared that actually did not help anyone. So here are my thoughts on the game so far:

The atmosphere is outstanding in this game. I like the game visuals a lot and also the sound is very 3D-esque creating a dense feeling. The graphics are very well done although there is not much happening in Death Stranding so this is something where the DEVs could put more emphasis on the world itself. Regarding that detail I think the world could ve used a little bit more variety, still the presentation is pretty.

The movement in general is okay. I dont think the idea of movement balancing is something that benefits the game much, actually it is partially clawing the pad too much or just holding balance+climb. I think this could ve been done better. Also the running, stopping and turning around is kind of sluggish in comparison to other games, same goes to the pretty awkward driving. It gets better later in the game.

The general storyline isnt too bad and although the game itself is very slow in pace I dont feel like I m getting where stuff is going at. There have been many words created within the world which makes it sometimes hard to follow. Also there are definitely some obvious plotholes and strange dialogues. Something that should ve done more smoothly is the beginning of the game. You will basically have to invest around 4hrs up until you reach the point where the game opens up for the first time. Pretty harsh in my opinion also the beginning is stacked with sequences etc. I didnt appreciate that part much as it felt more like a movie then actually a game and probably lost many players already at that stage. At around 10-20hrs of playtime you will get to a point with more variety that starts to feel more like a game and lets you more space to do stuff. This is where Death Stranding starts to shine. Depending on your pace and how many side quests you do it ll take quite a while and I can only suggest to endure a bit.

For the gameplay itself the game is okay. Normal enemy encounters are somewhat on a flat line, BT and boss encounters are intense in contrary. The dense sneaking atmosphere holds up big time. It is not a shooter or (in my opinion) even an action game and this is something you feel in combat situations because it does not feel well smooth all the time to me. The game can be squeezed down to delivering stuff and connecting cities and/or emotions with some stealthing, there is basically not much beyond that. There is no real character development besides unlocking some items and crafting. Strangely enough the game still feels very rewarding. Delivering stuff, make the world "whole" again, use stuff that other players contributed and contribute yourself. If anything deserves praise than it is what Kojima created here and I respect him for that. He truely connected people in this game and besides all the post-apocalyptic vibes it feels soothening.

After all Death Stranding seems too over ambitious to me. It has outstanding graphics and the interconnectivity between players that are actually not present is something very comforting and rewarding. Overall the game feels polished but it mixes too much stuff up and got me lost sometimes. The beginning is very slow and too misleading at times also very generic. You can definetely enjoy this game if you really give it a chance and enjoy slower paced games. Also be open to drop quite some hours into Death Stranding or you will not be able to see much progress in the time you spent.

If you are up for something new, give it a try. I do not suggest this game to be bought at full price nor would I suggest it for casual players with not much time to invest or players that are driven by action or faster paced oriented games.

But you can see how this game is very divided. You either hate it or like it. The graphics are beatiful and it runs great on both ps4 and ps4 pro. The music is phenominal! Ludvig Forssell is always good in that department.

It is very hard to recommend this game though, because it really caters towards a specific audience.

Fantastic world and music can't cover the lacking of gameplay. You just move back and forth between different places. The idea of using tool to help you deliver the goods looks interesting at the first 3 hours, but this system lacks of depth, you just repeat the boring errand over and over again...that;s not a right way to do a "immersive game".

The game starts off pretty slow, and at one point I nearly felt like moving on to something else, but shortly after this the game really picked up, and after a while I had trouble putting down the controller since I just wanted to keep going and see what happens next.

I can understand the negative reviews this game is getting, but I can't help but feel like a lot of people are giving up on it too soon, which is in many ways the game's fault.

I'll just end by saying that Death Stranding is by far the most memorable game I have played in a long time, and although it might be "a game about making deliveries", it's also so much more.

Contemplative, immersive and for adults, there are not many games in the catalog that fit that definition.
Technically impressive, stage scale, lighting, textures, soundtrack ... I've got to spend some time carrying packages enjoying the scenery and its climatic effects ... who would have thought!
In my case, I was looking for something more contemplative to disconnect and relax ... it totally complies.
In the weakest points ... the duration, at some point it becomes monotonous and repetitive, being that the combat mechanics are not excellent. The final bosses, gives the feeling of being integrated "by contract" but does not feel with the same care as the rest of the game. The idea of crafting and farming is very good, but it is one step away from being well executed; in my case, it does not generate enough incentive for you to go to collect materials and build new structures, you can progress without doing so and it is perceived as too optional, when it should be one of the cores of the game. Similar happens with the idea of an interconnected world where structures built by other players are integrated; It is a very powerful concept, but it ends up being very accessory when it comes to playing. It is curious that this feeling is present in so many sections of the game, how the use of "likes"; where openly it is not exchanged for anything explicit that changes the experience in the game, which totally dilutes the stimulus to improve. The feeling is that the game was conceived in a brilliant line, and when there were 3 months left they said, stop what you are doing and put in final bosses!
The story has been liked by many, I suppose it will depend on tastes, it seems too pretentious and convoluted to me, it did not generate much interest at any time. On a positive note, it is very well told, the characters are charismatic and the outcome improves it a lot ... a story, perhaps not to my liking.
There may be more shadows than lights, but with such a lack of adult games, and the brutal technical finish, it borders on excellent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With 50+ hours played, Death Stranding is a magnificent and slow smoldering entity of a game, showing it's unique and eccentric profoundness in the story, lore, music, graphics, atmosphere, and everywhere in between...(especially the acting!).. But, there are three major annoyances which you must know, and get used to if you really want to see the Gorgeous world Hideo has given inside...which are the beyond frustrating (and even unresponsive) controls and game play, overly complex and awful game mechanics and interface, and cut scenes that pop in at inconvenient times, one after the other...which feels intentionally done which is a shame. If you want instant gratification and convenience, DO NOT buy this game.

NOTE: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY/TO EXPLAIN THE SETUP OF THE STORY.

You play Sam Porter Bridges, who is a freelance porter (I.E. package deliverer). The story unfolds with you getting coerced and obligated by a Government package Delivery entity called Bridges into delivering packages to people and communities across the UCA (USA) and rebuilding a Chiral network (glorified internet connection) from the East coast to the West coast. You do this so everyone can access the Chiral network to make and request deliveries for everything and anything they need because after The event known as the "Death Stranding" the dimensional worlds of the living, dead, passed, and, present have overlapped each other, bringing particularly creepy and chaotic BT's connected by umbilical cords from the land of the dead. In an outside world full of large areas of BT's, Mules(obsessed delivery zombies), terrorists, timefall (rain and snow that ages everything it touches rapidly), empty hellish landscapes, etc which make life inconvenient, your goal is to bring everyone onto the Chiral network so they can stay safe and get their deliveries of anything from medical supplies to pizza to art, toys, books and more. On your journey to reconnect the UCA with the Chiral network, you run into quite a few people who you must convince to join by delivering goods to earn their broken trust after events which unfolded with the first Bridges team when they failed to bring the network completely up the first time, before you were a member. Also on your journey, you'll meet a particularly strong terrorist who has a connection to the BT's and will be revealed as your antagonist in the story as you try to unravel why he became a terrorist, how you can stop him, and how to connect a fractured society. Furthermore, you are also trying to reach the West coast in order to replace the President of the UCA, who dies extremely early in the game and also tasks you with reconnecting the UCA's Chiral network to everyone after said terrorist, antagonist, and previously courier company owner took steps to sabotage it.
A few more things to note while you are playing. The Babies, or BB's as they are called can detect BT phantoms, having a connection to the land of living and Dead, they were born to still mothers, and only can live for up to a year supposedly, and it's why you use them to navigate the land. When someone dies, they have to be cremated, or they get necrosis and become essentially a bomb, which they call a void-out and it's so powerful in fact that it'll leave mile long craters. Beaches are also a very vague subject in the story which as far as I gathered, are places between life and death, almost part of the subconscious where people can meet, like the Chiral network, but, internal.
Overall, the game is an easy 8.3 out of 10 for me. Would be a 10/10 if the controls and interface wasn't so unforgiving and frustrating, because it's really a beautifully put together game.

Buying Death Stranding was a risk. I’m not one for massive open-world games, I didn’t know what the hell the game was about, and the early divisive reviews made me even more unsure. And yet, the further I got into the game, I realised I was playing something in a way that I’m not sure I’ll ever experience again. The online system is fantastic, the world is photo-realistic and absolutely beautiful (the game reaches its peak visually when you’re up in the snowy mountains), the BT encounters are consistently tense, and as weird as it sounds, the walking is the best part about it. There are cutscenes aplenty to wade through with varying degrees of success (the late game cutscenes, while interesting, are a chore to finish), but you should come to Death Stranding for a wholly satisfying gaming experience that needs to be played to be believed, filled to the brim with a colourful cast of characters (and cameos aplenty from the film world to look out for!) and scenery to die for. I would call this game a walking simulator, very unique genre never seen in aaa games . It has very slow pace in gameplay and storytelling, and defiantlyisn't for players who expect fast action. The action in game is very unique with BT encounters, and i find that part of game most interesting. However when fighting with humans i really didn't have much fun.

Kojima's first post-MGS title is satisfying, slightly grinding, and very original. The humor is toned down while the empathy is turned up. I can't help but feel that he is exorcising some demons from his past employer relationship. A lot of people are critical of this game, for which I can say only one thing, get over it. The game is beautiful, meticulously balanced and aside from mid-late game grind, doesn't have a downside. Well, that and Monster drink. If he pulls that again, I think I'll have major criticism, but under the circumstances I can let it slide.

I think, if players can make peace with what Death Stranding is not, they can enjoy what it is.

Death Stranding is a game you cannot simply recommend to anyone. It's a game with moments of triumphant euphoria and others with dreadfully boring tasks in the way. It's a game with moments of triumphant euphoria and others with dreadfully boring tasks in the way. The gameplay and the story's goals is pretty simple; Deliver packages between different stations in a dystopian future of America in order to reconnect the country. The gameplay has little to no variation in this regard. This results in tedious pacing in different spots, most notably in the beginning hours after the prologue. After TEN HOURS the gameplay decides to innovate and introduce new mechanics, but that hurdle beforehand can put off many players. That's not to say those first ten hours are entirely horrible; Consistently beautiful landscapes consist within this world, which are a sight to behold, stretching for miles and miles and almost all of it is availabe for the player to reach. Once those ten hours are passed, the gameplay becomes more interesting, introducing road building and new vehicles, which make traversal easier, and in this world it really helps to have them. The lands of Death Stranding are inhabitaded with harsh environments and dangerous enemies, stretching from terrorists trying to steal your cargo to BTs (Beached Things) that ruin your day by harming your packages and making the player face off giant beasts. However, BTs ends up being less scary, since the player most of the time gets a chance to run away and not be punished in any way for their actions. Action scenes also feel awkward, because the jumping feels weird to say the least and aiming doesn't feel accurate and sharp. Where the gameplay shines is in the traversal and exploration. The fun comes from overcoming obstacles in the open world with the technology at your disposal. Death Stranding introduces a new mechanic in online structures from other people's constructions appearing in your game. This can help you overcome large mountains and giant chasms with no problem. The same way their structures can spawn in your world, yours can appear in theirs, and it ends up working as a collaborative project to traverse the environment through roads, vehicles and ziplines. It's obvious a huge production has worked on this game, and that is most prevalent in the games story. Performances across the board are terrific, from Norman Reedus as Sam to Léa Seydoux as Fragile to Troy Baker as Higgs to Mads Mikkelsen as Cliff, everyone including previously mentioned actors do a great job at their work. The characters, however, aren't all fully developed. While some characters like Die-Hardman (Tommie Earl Jenkins) and Heartman (Nicholas Winding Refn, Darren Jacobs) are rather developed, other characters like Fragile, Higgs, Mama (Margaret Qually) and Sam, the main character, are missing the depth needed to get us truly invested in their well-being, and the things we learn about them aren't fully explained or developed. The actors' charisma saves the characters from being hollow beings of nothing. The most interesting character is Cliff, and that's because his character consists of mystery and intrigue for big parts of the plot and slowly the player learns information about him, making him a satisfying character to learn of. Some characters were just lacking in this department. The thing that made the story also interesting is the situations the plot moved in and the last five hours at such a good pace with incredible writing that it makes you wish the rest of the story could be as consistently entertaining, instead of being a mixed bag. Those last five hours include amazing cinematics grabbing one's attention and investing the player in the scenarios and asking huge questions about humanity and hope in the face of world ending odds. I still understand how this can be a divisive game. It can be a breath of fresh air in a industry of corporal choke holds with its relaxing gameplay or it can be a tedious experience of simplistic mission and horribly paced gameplay. I would say that it falls somewhere in between those two categories. This game falls down to taste. It's neither objectively good nor objectively bad. In the end, only you can decide for yourself whether the game is enjoyable or not. In either case, it's an interesting testament to what is capable of video games and how its industry can be pushed to new genres and ideas. Expand

Buen balance jugabilidad/cinemáticas, muy buenos gráficos, una historia muy original con personajes memorables, lo único en que callo fue en el manejo de la moto y autos, es horrible pero no injugable.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
