But really the reason to play this game is the STORY and the atmosphere. The game has an incredible story, along with wonderful lore and world building. The characters are memorable, the concepts are unique. Which should come as no surprise to anyone, since Kojima games are rly just love stories, dramas, family operas, and tragedies with a backdrop of action and espionage. No one actually plays the metal gear solid games because of the gunfights or the stealth action. It's the story and characters we love. The asynchronous multiplayer is perfect for people like me are all about single player games. It adds a nice touch to the world, and it's 98% helpful. Kojima found a way to basically take the rly helpful parts of Dark Souls asynchronous multiplayer, and made it better and without the potential side effect of dealing with mean people. Finally, yes there is a baby, yes you will fall in love with it.

So original and interesting in both gameplay and story that it's something everyone has to play at least once. You might like it, you might hate it but it's undeniably refreshingly original and out of this world.

I wondered why, despite critical praise and largely favorable word of mouth, users were bombing the game with negative reviews on Metacritic beginning in early November 2019. I do not get people who say this game is not fun. Because Death Stranding is one of the funniest games I've played this gen. Genuinely amusing and entertaining at every turn.

On top of that, the game is full of fresh new ideas and concepts, and the story is fresh too. And the sad fact that 99% of games today are just tired rehashes of old ideas, makes the freshness and uniqueness of Death Stranding stand out even more in a positive way.
One of the greatest joys of this game was learning. I went in blind, and learned to master the environs and the tools the hard way. It took a VERY long time to really 'get' everything, but once I did, I genuinely felt like the master of the battlefield, able to take any order and deliver it with style. And this was great because in most games today, you can learn the ropes in five minutes, so to have something genuinely challenging to play is AWESOME.
So, if the game is so brill, why I gave it mere 9 and not 10?
Well, its because of the game world. The world in Death Stranding is extremely barren, and there really is nothing whatsoever to see in it, except for half dozen tiny ruins. Now, some say its because timefall has eroded all away, but if this is so, how come there are certain ruins, unprotected from timefall, that still stand almost intact?
No, I suspect that the game world was left barren because Kojima intended it to be rebuild full of life by players in the online game. But when the game got such bad reception, Kojima dropped the whole idea and left it as is. Well, whatever the reason, the barrenness of the game world really eats you away, and that's from someone who is used to playing JRPGs that have painfully barren maps...
Other issue is that there is no real PS4Pro enhancement here. I first played thru the game on regular PS4 when it came out. And now I replayed thru it on PS4Pro. And was shocked to see no difference between the two 'versions'. No real visual enhancement, just bit better framerate, is all that Pro gives me. Disappointing. So, hence 9/10
Still this game is genuine masterpiece, and one everyone should play thru. Even if it hurts. And if Kojima was ever to see this review, well, thank you for giving us the most unique, and one of the best, game of the generation. If all devs had such vision and ability, our gaming lives would be so much more fascinating and fulfilling.

Ok jokes aside, I would totally expect a lot of people not to like this game due to its slow pace and not-too-exciting gameplay, and because it's such a unique game it was always bound do create some controversy.

Here's the deal, imo the story, acting and world building are the real stars of the game. How did Kojima come up with this world, story, art and design I have no idea.
The gameplay is actually very polished and does what it tries to do perfectly. The problem is that what it's trying to do is something that no crazy game developer has ever dared to try before, that is essentially a walking simulator. Now that term is too simplistic, and I'm not using it in a negative way, but traversing environments and obstacles to go from point A to point B is what 90% the gameplay is about. I personally didn't hate it, and I found it fascinating, but yes, it was a dull experience at times. After all, it's tough to create excitement without combat, survival thrill or competitiveness being key parts of a game. Still though, if you're like me and you find yourself completely captivated by Death Stranding's world and its mysteries, you will always have the motivation to keep going through adversities to eventually reach your destination. After all, it's not supposed to be easy or fun for a post apocalyptic delivery guy to get the job done, and this game manages to put the player's in it's protagonist shoes like few others.
This struggle and loneliness you feel throughout the game is what gives meaning and beauty to the online interactive system where players can help each other without ever meeting in person. When you find a tool or other kind of boost left over by another delivery guy, that's when you're reminded that you're not alone and that humans can pull though when they stick together, which is one of, if not the main moral lesson of the game. This is only one of many examples of what makes Death Stranding one of the most innovative, creative, passionate games ever made.

Great game, sometimes the gameplay can be a but repetitive, but is still enjoyable.
The story and lore is absolutely amazing, by playing the game you can tell that is done by people who care about it and believed in the project.
Still not perfect of course, still got some technical issues, but is still a great start for Kojima Production.
    Would totally recommend.

A game, which once untangled, presents a beautiful and creative story.

To understand the plot and characters, I highly recommend Noah Caldwell-Gervais' review on YouTube. It's a game which requires you to put in some effort to believe all the ridiculous stuff that's going on. Absolutely not a game for everyone, and really not meant to be. Absolutely not a game for everyone, and really not meant to be. But once you're in, you're in for 60+ hours of fun.

The pacing is an issue, with many moments when you wish the cutscene will end. Furthermore, the pacing towards the end is not great, especially the last 2-3 hours.

The voice acting and Hollywood actors which participated in this project are great and thoroughly enjoyable.

Make sure this game is for you before playing to avoid disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought this game with the special addition ps4 pro and even though it took me quite a while to beat it , I throughly enjoyed it. Calling it a walking simulator is true at times but I honestly enjoyed putting in the effort to find the best ways to make deliveries and finding ways to make it easier for myself and others that were connected to the same server as I was. The story is spoon fed to you which I did find just a little annoying but after every cutscene it just made me want to continue to see how the story unfolded. I did get max with all facilities in the game just because that is the type of player that I am and I feel if I did not do that I would have completed the game much sooner but there is a sense of accomplishment from doing that and getting the trophy that says only 4% of players actually did it. The ending of the game did a nice job explaining most things about the story and the final cutscene of the main story with Sam and Lou walking away from the incinerator was one of the most touching things I have ever seen from a video game . Couple that with the amazing song choice for the ending cutscene and I could not help but shed some tears at the ending . You truly get attached to your BB. This game is not for everyone, if all you want is action and combat , look elsewhere. Expand

The story is very confusing and it will stay confusing for many many hours most of the big questions won’t be answered until the ending and this game is long the story is about 30 hours so if you don’t like slow story telling , mystery and reading the lore ( messages and interviews inside the game ) you might not like the story but if you like these type of things like exploring the whole concept of the world setting and all the lore behind it the story will be amazing from your point of view . The characters all have a very detailed story and learning about them is very fun .

2-World/graphics I played this game on a ps4 pro so basically the best device that could run that game at the time of the release and it is a very good looking game.
It won’t change the future of graphics in games or anything like that but in my opinion it is one of the best looking games in the ps4 generation and the world of the game helps a lot it is a very pretty world to look at all the rivers , mountains , seas etc it has an amazing depiction of nature. The way the snow changes when you walk on it or the rooks that fall from mountain tops made the world feel alive .

3-Gameplay Here is the thing most people have a problem with 60% of the game is you walking and managing cargo , 20% is driving , 20% is combat/stealth . This is why I said this game is for people who are sick of traditional games and want something different the walking and balancing mechanics with cargo are ok but they aren’t anything absolutely amazing they are just simply ok and seeing that you will spend 60% of the game just walking with goodish mechanics is a big problem because most people play video games for the action and doing things they could never dream of doing in real life but if you want to try a new kind of video games or simply chill after playing rainbow six siege or cod with the boys you might like the concept . The driving is good there are only 2 vehicles a truck and a bike so you don’t have many options and a bigger problem is lack of roads in the game you can build roads to certain locations but it takes a lot of materials and the places roads go to are limited so most of people will view driving in this game as a way to save time rather than something to enjoy as a part of the game . The stealth is very very basic that’s all I could say about it really. There are 2 types of combat melee combat which is also very basic you can only use your fists and 2 other things ( you can’t even call them weapons ) to hit enemies . Ranged combat is good you have options from a pistol to a rocket launcher and everything in between like an assault rifle , shotgun, different types of grenades and a grenade launcher . There are also different types of ammo that you can use based upon the kind of enemy you are fighting. Generally I really liked the combat it’s nothing revolutionary but it’s good .

Kojima shows in this game all his passion for the video game and what it represents, transcending the simple concept of entertainment, creating a story not only interesting, but with deep and interesting characters. The weaknesses of the game come out especially in the shooting phases and in the more advanced parts of the game where the gampley tends to be heavy and repetitive.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The majority of negative reviews you'll see for this game will say the same things: Slow. Boring. Not what was expected. A few hours into the game and I could see why some people were saying that. Although very definitely a Kojima game it was very definitely NOT Metal Gear Solid, or anything like it. Then again, nor was it ever trying or claiming to be.

You start the game feeling lonely, isolated, ferrying packages between a few points and trying to figure out what to do when you encounter BTs. Anyone slating the game on the basis of this feeling of isolation, I dare say has missed the entire point of the game. You're MEANT to start out isolated, you're MEANT to start out alone and it's MEANT to completely suck.

Underneath the stunning vista is a story of how the human race needs connections. The pace does pick up and the story is beautifully interwoven between your progress through cinematic sequences. You begin to sympathise with Sam Bridges aversion to human contact given his condition. Once you approach the end game there's a huge sense of achievement. Especially if you've taken the time to get all the waystations and so on up to maximum connection.

You'll get attached to BB in a way that will surprise you, making certain aspects towards the end even more emotional.

One gameplay aspect I really enjoyed is that Hideo Kojima doesn't hold your hand. It's an exploration game in more ways than one, you have to figure out menus for yourself. It's on you to figure out where the best place to concentrate your resources and buildings (spoiler: it's the snowy mountains, zip wires are a MUST).

Kojima achieved with this game what should be the holy grail in gaming, I was left completely satisfied, and yet wanting more. Troy Baker and Norman Reedus are outstanding (because of course they are) and if there's a sequel (I don't see how, but I can hope) then they HAVE to be part of it.

I loved this. Read the next review down and it's likely to be someone who hated it. Fact is, because it's a game that is designed to elicit emotional responses it really is one you have to experience yourself. No-one can tell you how you're going to enjoy this game or otherwise.

The game has a neat way of incentivizing you to complete orders and the online feature helps to make that happen even though my one gripe about that is it kinda leaves a mess of too much stuff not enough usability for my liking. While I would have liked Silent Hills this game is unique and has a level of polish that makes other AAA games seem a bit janky. The description "genre defying" is most definitely the most appropriate way to describe Death Stranding(DS). I can't really compare DS to any single game...it really leverages bits and pieces of so many different game genres while creating a brand new experience. Some of my friends asked me why I'd play a game where "you play a delivery man in a game that requires no skill"....and honestly...I can't disagree with their description...but I also can't agree with it either. Death Stranding (DS) is so much more than that...while also not much more than that. But I'll do my best to summarize it.

After 2020...this game was so refreshing. Where most games encourage you to constantly "destroy" and "indiscriminately kill" all that is around you, DS encourages you to do the opposite. You're encouraged to re-build the a post apocalyptic world while helping strangers...you never actually meet in game. You can tell other players exist...but you never actually see them...but you can help them and they can help you. The game rewards you for helping and connecting people with in game "likes"...but there is no way to "dislike" something. And inevitably, other players will benefit from your paths and structures. Other players will contribute to building and up keeping your structures and I'd be you will contribute to theirs.

As for game play mechanics....you are essentially a delivery man who goes on lots of hikes. And while this sounds super simple...it's anything but... You want to maximize the amount of cargo you can carry, but you also have to literally balance the cargo you choose with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. You'll need to "balance" the cargo you want to deliver with minimal damage, with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. If you take the direct route, you'll likely encounter some conflicts along the way the requires fighting supplies. But if you take a longer route, it'll be more difficult terrain that not only requires you to bring extra supplies but will require more patience to find a route where you won't fall over and damage your cargo. And along the way, "walking" will require you to manage multiple controls. Kojima was so detailed in this game design, that you have to use the left/right triggers to balance the weight on your back along with not only the terrain, but the wind and currents. It's so incredibly simple and yet so complex.

I also find it very interesting that "killing" in this game is possible, but also highly discouraged. If you kill a living being, you have to dispose of their body or risk a "void out" which essentially is a game over moment requiring you to reload from a save point. It's totally possible to accomplish a disposal...but it's also a major pain discouraging killing a living thing. I know some won't enjoy this...but I personally found it so refreshing. I never intentionally killed another player/NPC. But I did accidentally kill one NPC....that I mistook for an in game hologram by running them over with a vehicle. I was compelled to get out of the vehicle and check on the character even though time was ticking for a timed delivery. I was heart broken while I watched his NPC's partner grieve over their partner/porter's body. It was a total accident and still so emotionally impactful even though it was an accident.

As for the story, cinematics, and music.....WOW! I'm still in awe. I'm not going to claim the script was flawless...but the story was VERY WELL done. In various parts of the game, you'll have some eye rolling moments where there is quirky dialogue and you'll question why some character names are so very...cliche. But I PROMISE that if you complete the game you won't regret it. The overall story is very well told and complete by the end of the game. I can't even begin to describe how many emotional roller coasters I experienced while playing the game. I was so fortunate to have a friend who had recently finished the game that I could share my experiences with. If you can share the experience with a friend...I'd highly recommend it.

At the beginning I said this was more of an experience than a game...and I still hold to that claim. I do think you need to play the entire game to appreciate that experience. I know it's hard these days to trust a creator..but I'd highly encourage you to trust Kojima and play through the entire game. It is possible to play the entire game only focusing on the "main" missions, but I suspect you'll instinctively start to complete side missions which will help you along the way.

Overall...I can't effectively communicate how much I appreciated this game. It's absolutely fantastic!!!! As tempting as a 10/10 was...DS isn't without flaws, but no game/experience is. The music and pacing was fantastic. I wish I had more characters...so I'll end with just EXPERIENCE DEATH STRANDING!

Death Stranding is a kind of anti-game, taking apart what video games really are and what is their purpose. Many people call it a walking simulator and at the first glance it really is just that. The trick is that going from one point to another, figuring out the routes, making choices, building structures that will help you and others to traverse difficult terrain gave me more fun than vast majority of action-packed games ever did. Making deliveries became an addiction for me for many hours. You don't have to shoot people to have fun fighting obstacles in a game.

The other thing is the story, which is incredibly deep and moving near the end of the game. I would compare it to the best sci-fi films in history, like 2001: Space Odyssey or Interstellar. It's epic but also touching and intimate. It makes you wonder what's the meaning of life, what will happen in the future, it questions your beliefs and morality. It left me literally in tears at the end of the game and I will never forget that.

At last, the graphics and music. It's a delicious cherry on top. Almost every frame in the game could be a perfect wallpaper, it's so mesmerising. The thing I keep coming to the most is probably the music though. It's one the best soundtracks ever. Ryan Karazija, who made most of the songs in the game, is one of the biggest musical discoveries for me in the last decade.

I love this game. It has its flaws, like shallow fighting system, little bugs and glitches, but it's constantly on my mind and I can't stop thinking about it. I was never a Kojima fan, I never cared about MGS series. Buy now I'm waiting eagerly what his next creation will be.

One of my favorite thing about this game is the amazing story (it can get a little weird but I love weirdness), that with amazing voice acting and the best facial animations. I gave this game a 9 instead of a 10 because it’s combat is not that good but it doesn’t matter because it’s not the main focus of the game, also the way the main character interacts with the environment could sometimes (only sometimes) feel a little bit unnatural. When I first started playing this I thought for the first few hours it was some standard horror game. Turned out to be the opposite and is the best delivery game ever. If this could be the life of a courier I would change careers!

I can understand where people are coming from when they say this game isn't for everyone because the way I see it, most people think of fun video games as primarily just mindless hack and slashing, shooting others, and innovative gameplay but not delivering packages or complex stories but to be completely honest with you, after putting more than 100 hours into this game for the platinum, I personally believe the people who are giving this game a 0 didn't even bother playing this because this game is so much more than just a lifeless open world delivery game. The main thing to understand what I mean is that I wouldn't describe this world as "lifeless" since there's plenty of lost cargo along the path meaning you can decide to stop and quickly pick it up making sure it's a mindless point A to B path with nothing to look at since the lost cargo all over the place will make sure you keep a careful eye all over the place. It's not even like there's nothing to look at even without the lost cargo since the graphics are PHENOMENAL even for a base PS4 to complement the atmosphere to ensure it's both relaxing which I can imagine is what a lot of people play games for and it stays in your head on what a post apocalyptic world would look like and it also helps the performance is excellent since the frame stays LOCKED to 30 FPS which is especially impressive for a world this detailed even for a PS4 Pro. The way how the gameplay is more fun than it looks since your cargo is heavy and the world is also a challenge with terrain potentially posing a danger to cargo making you plan out and experiment on how to get past the challenge and it's always satisfying when you do it. I'm not kidding when I say the sandbox a big strength of this game since you could overcome a challenge or reach a destination however you want; for example, I decided to try and kill all the human enemies and cremate their bodies to see what would happen and sure enough, their bodies NEVER came back making me feel rewarded I tried an experiment. The "emptiness" is intended since you can build any types of structures you want but there's also other structures other players made and when you use them/make structures, you're helping other people out and they're helping you to make you and others understand that in order to save America (or let's face it as gamers, probably just get the platinum trophy), we need to work together and unite as one which now that I think about it, must've been Kojima's plan all along. Whoever made this soundtrack should get a raise because there's not a whole lot of music but then when it does come up, it shows up when you're about to finish a difficult delivery and it genuinely feels like a massive burden is lifted off your shoulders and you feel so relived thanks to the soothing music. Finally, the story is frankly complex and convoluted and that in return is what makes it incredible but it's really the characters surrounding the story that makes it something special because without them, this story would've fallen flat on it's face since a good story is completely around it's characters to tell it. HOWEVER, I don't think this game is perfect and even though Kojima is quite an icon in the gaming industry, even he isn't immune from criticism and I've seen plenty of people say these flaws are his "style" but to be clear, just because it's his style doesn't make it good. Like even though the physics are amazing, they're not perfect since Sam could slip and act like he hit a wall even when a rock the size of his knee caps is in the way and it's extra annoying when you feel your cargo shouldn't have gotten damaged like this. The performances are great for the most part, but there was this one character who was just downright HORRIBLE especially considering this is a AAA game. Finally, what I believed created of the initial negative first impressions, nothing happens in the first 4 chapters. To be frank, it's not the players job to continue on throughout the game to see what happens, the developers need to get the players engaged from the very beginning otherwise players are gonna think this is how the game is gonna be for the rest of the game which is clearly not true. Overall, despite it's flaws, Death Stranding is one of the most unique games I've ever played and I'm so happy I played it since I haven't felt both this relaxed and lost in a video game for quite and a while and if you can get past the first 4 chapters, I can happily recommend this game and I can't wait to see what Kojima has to offer for the sequel.
EDIT: Actually, scratch what I said, the human enemies I killed DID come back but that wasn't for a LOT longer than if I knocked them out

It's a super-weird and very niche game. Like, it's the most Kojima of all Kojima games. It's also his most divisive among players. There seem to be the extremes (love it or hate it) with not much middle ground. I really enjoyed it. As in, I finished it three times. And I only finish about half the games I buy, so that's a huge up-vote for me. But it's definitely a slow-burn kinda game. AndIt's a super-weird and very niche game. AS EVERY DELIVERY MAN SHOULD BE.

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
I will preface this by saying that I played the pc version of Death Stranding, played it in its entirety but did not get the platinum. This is the original version of the game.

    THIS IS AMERICA:
Death Stranding looks like a typical Kojima game; the player is catapulted within the first few hours of the game into a sequence of cryptic cutscenes aimed at stimulating the player's curiosity, and right from the start one can understand the highly authorial tone of the work. The location is the USA, in a “post apocalyptic” setting. It is neither coincidental nor strange to understand almost nothing of the plot of this game in the first few hours, but it is precisely where the player does not fully understand the plot that he or she can begin to speculate, later finding themselves with pleasant predictions and surprises as the story progresses. In the first steps within the game, the mechanics that will later be used throughout the playthrough are brilliantly explained, thanks to the accurate level design and the clarity of the main mechanics.

    DELIVERING PACKAGES:
Death Stranding's gameplay is one of the most talked-about gameplays of 2019; between those who are bored and those who are thrilled, it is undeniable that Death Stranding created something new, which in today's AAA is no small feat. Just giving the game an actual genre is complex, being that it created a new one in its own right. There is no denying that this gameplay, based on merely running from point A to point B is nothing epic, and it may bore the casual gamer, but if you take it the right way it becomes a very relaxing game, given also the mainly natural style of the environment.
Nonetheless, the game has several mechanics that can delight various types of players and different playstyles; you can rush through the game skipping everything by bike, always go on foot admiring the scenery, or fight looters who will try to steal your cargo. There is of course no shortage of problems, but I will report on them in the game cons later.

    LOOKING THROUGH UNBORN’S EYES:
Graphically the game is really good, on consoles it looks almost always clean and detailed, on pc you don't notice excessive differences from the console version except for the rendering distance and framerate. The facial animations are decent but the models are superb. Yet another merit is the world design; the use of photogrammetry, the assumption of real environments to give the game a realistic architecture, makes the game incredibly immersive. In addition, the use of lighting and colors is always apt and impeccable.

    “LIKE SOUND EFFECT”:
On audio level, the game has very few imperfections; it boasts of a soundtrack composed of dozens of songs always used at the right time, some truly catchy osts created specifically for the game, an astronomical cast with some of the best voice actors in the video game world, and a perfect choice of sound effects.

    BUT WHY 9?

    PROS:
Death Stranding is one of those gems that should be played by those who are fans of exciting and intricate storylines. If what you are looking for is a game purely dedicated to gameplay, it is not the game for you, as that is not what it was created for. The story, world building and characterization of this work is one of the best ever created. All of this is extremely augmented by the fantastic actors used and the great voice actors in the cast. The study of the game's level design is almost always impeccable, and it suppresses the repetitiveness of the base game.

    CONS:
The cons of the game are several, and they almost all relate to subjective tastes a player might have. Let's start, however, with objective problems; The motorbike; the motorbike is one of those things that are essential to the game, but turn out 80% of the time to be extremely clunky, and you often find yourself stuck, bugged or in impossible situations. Another thing is the facial animations, which as opposed to the facial models, turn out, due to technology, to be very expressive, and there are many scenes that would have been much more exciting with better animations. Obviously the worst negative point of the game is, if given in the hands of a casual player, the lack of franticness, action, and diversity; the presence of numerous cutscenes made many people give up on the game, along with the monotonous gameplay, and this is a shame, but as kojima said, this was calculated, and not everything can please everyone.

Awesome game, it’s itself a new kind of video game, with a whole new concept and new way of doing things, of course it requires a lot of time and a lot of common sense and curiosity if you wanna make things simple, for example, I spend hours and hours walking because I didn’t understand how to use the equipment to travel from one part of the map to the other and tried to use the motorbike everywhere, but once you understand the ziplines everything becomes easier. The story is awesome, every character has a lot of personality and enrich the way to the end, it’s a time worthy trip, that everyone should experience and enjoy, Norman Reedus is such a rockstar, just to watch him worth the time. The villain is awesomely made, like all the twists at the end, for sure you won’t regret playing this game. The whole thing last around 40 hours, not going too deep into secondary missions of course.

If there is one thing to mention, on a negative way, is the Call of Duty parts of the game, or the “Metal Gear” parts coming from Miyazaki, it’s so unnecessary those shooting sessions, and so frustrating, above all at the final hour of the game, when you think it’s over and just keep delaying the end, and shooting the VT is good, but those against Cliff are so bad and it may be the worse part of the whole game.

One of the most innovative games I've ever played - it attempts at creating a different gaming experience with different stakes and it mostly succeeds. One thing I didn't like was the general narrative framework of "make America whole again". If Kojima found a more compelling reason for sending Sam into his journey, it would have been 10/10 masterpiece. Expand

    Wow. What a game.

If you play for more than a few hours the game mechanics make sense. You learn how to not fall over all the time, how to use stealth, or be brash and loud when needed. The gameplay is super fun. Trying to work out the best route for deliveries to maximise your route and avoid BTs.

The story as well is so well written and unique. I love the characters and the history they have. Also how all the stories tie in at the end.

The only really annoying thing in the game for me was the unskippable scene every time your BB detects BTs. If you make mutliple runs this can happen many times and it gets frustrating. Apart from that I highly recommend.

This game is graphically incredible, with a soundtrack to match. Kojima stamps his mark with another crazy story (no spoilers don't worry) that's as far fetched as you'd expect from Hideo, but engrossing non-the-less.
Probably one of the most thought provoking, touching games I have ever witnessed. Worth persevering.

The storyline is typical Kojima, interesting and confusing at times, but anyone who has played MGS games will not be surprised by this lol. Delivering both assigned and lost cargo to it's destination, you get this weird sense of satisfaction that you're helping out everyone in need and rebuilding America via the Chiral Network. Each new character you deliver a package to and hook up to the Chiral Network, thanks you and either unlocks or upgrades a new item, weapon, or vehicle.

As you're delivering packages across the beautiful open world, you'll walk, run, and drive across all kinds of landscapes from volcanic wastelands to snow capped mountains. You'll come across cargo bandit camps, these weird creatures known as BT's, etc, I don't wanna give away too much. The graphics are some of the best of this console generation. Controls are well thought out, tight and responsive, great cast of characters, an interesting and somewhat confusing storyline, but like I mentioned before, it's Kojima!

The only complaints I have with the game are confusing menus and inventory systems, too many long cut scenes, and the BT's get quite annoying after a while. This isn't a game for everyone and is already proving to be devisive. If you have the attention span of a toddler and only play Call of Duty, etc, this game isn't for you. For anyone looking for something different and especially if you're a Kojima fan (some subtle MGS things in the game), I highly recommend this game. 8/10

Acting is great except for Troy Baker whom blows by trying too hard. Material handed to actors was probably quite challenging. Mads Mikkelsen saves the game with his acting skills near the end.

Combat mechanics are pretty barebones and rather awkward. Some of the characters are really annoying and there is very little natural interaction with them. Writing is not Kojima's best but still fairly good. The ending scenes were disappointing if not out-right boring due to length and cheap attempt to get emotional response from player. It's actually a problem in Death Stranding that it attempts so hard to get an emotional response from the player that it falls just flat in many ways and doesn't deliver the goods.

Pacing is a problem in Death Stranding. Fighting MULEs and delivering packages and micromanaging resources was really fun. Fighting BTs not so much. Traversing terrain and coming up new routes is quite fun. Overall the game is just too easy even on hardest difficulty level. It has around 80 hours of unique game content which after that will recycle its missions and go forever.

Getting new tools and utils and weapons to test different tactics was quite fun. I would have loved if there was more variety to those tools you use to travel the terrain and more diverse terrain scenarios. The game makes its own gameplay pointless by use of some of the more OP tools which strip some of the engagement out. Having social media network in a game to connect other players was quite fun until the magic of it wore off and I realised that it very well didn't have to be there since I don't see other players but rather see what they've built.

Ugh, There is so much more I'd like to say but cannot but into words really. This is not a game for everyone. It's not focused on action but rather simulating post-apocalyptic Postman Pat. Which is interesting and entertaining but probably not what gamers primarily look forward to when the box says "A Hideo Kojima game".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE GOOD

    -Gameplay
The game actually isn't 100% nothing but fetch quests, but it is "mostly" fetch quests. If this were any other game that would be a very bad thing, but the way that the game is designed makes fetch quests very fun and they are absolutely the best part of the game. Progression feels great, everything feels earned, and nothing is free.

Want to run around with a pair of cyber legs to help you carry more, and to help you with stability? Ok, but now you can't attach packages to your thighs, and now you need to manage the battery for it (meaning you either take advantage of the infrastructure that you've access too via linking with other players, or you build charging stations yourself). Wanna use that nice big truck you finally managed to develop that holds tons of cargo and protects cargo from timefall? You better bet you're gonna a spend time building roads and linking up with players that have the same goals in mind.

-The design of the supernatural elements
Timefall is a very cool and unique hazard and the story and world designers really knocked it out of the park trying to think of how timefall would affect the world. There's subtle details that you'll notice as you play that will make you go "Ahhhhh... okay..." and it's nice that a lot of these details are "just there" and not spelled out for you.

The "ghost" like creatures are genuinely creepy and until you realize how not threatening they are and how easy it is to get around them, they'll be genuinely frightening

    What I don't like:

-America is SMALL! Like seriously... it's smaller than a small city... It's very immersion breaking... It's a little sad as they "could" have used the existing lore to make it seem life sized. They've got a system in place for feeding "Chiral Printers", basically a 3D printer on steroids, to build roads and highways... It would have felt much better to have the player building these highways to connect large maps together, the player only being able to cross between maps with certain vehicles. Instead, it literally takes 10-20 minutes to drive from Maine to Florida...

    -The Story
I like the themes. I like the "feel" that Kojima was going for. I like the subject matter. I like the acting, the presentation, and on paper I like most of the plot points. My problem with the story is how exposition heavy it is.

There are several characters who exist solely to exposition dump on Sam and they do it soooo frequently... It's rather mind numbing...

-The sections of gameplay that aren't fetch quests
Minor spoilers here, there are sections of gameplay that end up basically being a 3rd person shooter. It's a jarring change of pace and it feels completely out of place.

I LOVE the design of the creatures, as mentioned above, but the actual "gameplay" that revolves around them is really really weak. Early on you're encouraged to sneak around them, which is tense as the Timefall damages your cargo so you "want" to go fast. Well... you can literally stash your cargo, run straight into one of the baddies so they "get" you, and once they "get" you there's this transition that basically forces Sam to start running for his life... but actually "doing" that is so incredibly easy. You can lpick a direction and spam jump+run in most cases to get away. You won't die. Once you get away the rainfall clears and you're free to grab your cargo and cross through the area unhindered. What's more, you develop technology as the game progresses that lets you take them out with minimal effort.

-Random details that don't make sense
No, I don't mean story wise. I'm talking about things like... how Sam's jacket leaves his face exposed even with his hood up. Sam's gonna get a lot of Timefall slapping his face. If Kojima wanted his face to be exposed so we could see Norman Reedus acting, he could have just had him behind clear plastic...

It's utterly unbelievable that humanity would survive with the death rules as they are. Early game spoilers, when ANYBODY dies they go nuclear if they aren't burned within a few hours. There are cities in the game with populations that are supposed to be 5 digits... Now, this "could" have been fixed with some writing... Suppose everyone that lives in these cities are forced to basically wear self incinerators that'll cook em when their heart stops. The bandits outside the cities could not have these, so you still wouldn't want to kill them. Why would the terrorists even use nukes??? Just f-ing off someone in a city and hide the body then leave...

    -Transitional cutscenes
This is a minor gripe. You can manually skip transitional cutscenes, but there are so many of them. Seriously, when Sam goes into a safehouse there are THREE cutscenes.

    Overall:

-In spite of it's flaws, the core gameplay loop is very fun and the game is very unique. Recommend to anyone that's not just an FPS junkie. 8/10
    For me, it's a solid 8/10.

The end result is a mixed bag of wonder and over indulgence that divided critics and audiences alike. Am I talking about George Lucas and The Phantom Menace? Nope. I am referring to one of the most divisive video game of this generation, Death Stranding. This is Hideo Kojima's first project outside Konami, the mega corporation that has nurtured him. The end result is probably the biggest budgeted 'Indie' video game of all time. It's an anti thesis of what Kojima has tried in the past. The MGS series is about a soldier of war who couldn't escape a cycle of violence, so much so that it is 'literally' embedded in his DNA, where his progeny continued his violent tendency ad nauseaum. Sam Porter Bridges, on the other hand, is the ultimate delivery man in a post apocalyptic world. He is essentially a pacifist, and hence, Death Stranding ends up being the most non violent game of this generation. He is not a killer and his job is simply to connect people that are separated from this horrific event. It is incredibly well produced, a killer cast in the form of Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, and has incredible production values that create an incredibly immersive experience. Yet it has its flaws. Like The Phantom Menace, Kojima and Lucas are too much in awe of their own world building, sacrificing the essence of their own medium: its narrative propulsion and in Kojima's case, the gameplay. Yet, we sort of know what Kojima tries to do: to upend the notion of an open world game and to break the 'monotony' of current AAA games and its samey approach. I have to admit, all these 'open world' games felt essentially the same: a product of astronomical budget and its pressure to make a 'profit'. Death Stranding may not work in many places, but Kojima's insistence to create something 'new' is commendable. Let's say that this is a pixelated walking simulator akin to the original NES' MGS, made by an Indie studio, then people may consider this a 'masterpiece'. But coming from one of the biggest name in gaming? Well, an obvious head scratcher there. Still worth a look, but players be warned, it is not the blockbuster 'action-vaganza' that many are looking for. Expand

Death Stranding keeps the bizarre art direction from MGS4 but does not knock you down with it, nor has oddly annoying enemies like MGS4.

I feel the art direction and design is more focused here in Death Stranding. Themes of death, pollution of the environment, crude oil, and gender roles are here, and expressed in ways that make you think. Also apparently the theme of loneliness is supposed to be here. Or maybe male loneliness and disconnection which is the life experience so far for the protagonist. Speaking of, the acting is very good here, especially Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux. Some of the supporting acting is good too, notably Margaret Qualley.

I feel I have to address some of the negative reviewing here as it pertains to the game and those who consume games. Writing a negative review saying you were bored or put off is one thing. However, those that are swarm down-voting the positive reviews alludes to the fact that this game indeed evokes a passionate response for better or worse (and that’s a testament to its quality). I admit I didn’t watch a lot of the trailers but at least one trailer made this game look more action-packed than it is.

However, more likely the negative reviewing is an extension of “gamergate” and there are sub-hints in the game why this might be. For one, how Norman Reedus is portrayed is almost sexually objectified. There are a lot of scenes of him near-nude and in positions which accentuate the contours of his body. Also the fact that he cares for a baby and actively enjoys it in the game likely makes him appealing for women. Also the fact that there few women characters that are scantily-clad in this game. Gone are characters like “Quiet” from MGS5. However, I think Lea Seydoux is extremely attractive and does not need to constantly show skin to see it.

So-called “man-babies” who like bullets, explosions, and objectified women are likely a large base of the negative reviewers and swarm-down voters of the positive reviews. I don’t think its actually going to shout down those including myself who are enjoying this game.

The game is by no means a perfect game, in terms of combat in game its laughably easy to knockout a whole MULE camp and steal their gear, also battling BT's feels a bit meaningless since they will comeback if you leave the area even for a fraction of a second or wander a bit too far forcing you to just use stealth in the first place.

That being said, I've been loving every single second of the game, in the beginning without having a proper way to defend yourself from the BT's each encounter is a nerve wracking experience as you try to navigate through enemies you cannot see. The environment is beautifully done, I see many people comparing it to breath of the wild and saying it is empty in comparison. Yes only a few areas on the map have settlements, however this does not mean its empty and meaningless, every part on the map is designed to challenge the user in some way, either by crossing through rivers, rough terrain, or BT or MULE infested terrain. I have by no means finished the game or even close to it, however in the time I have been playing I am constantly surprised by the different mechanics implemented into the game.

The graphics in the game are beautiful, the motion capture for Norman Reedus is so good it makes you feel weird when he does dumb things in the mirror. the level of detail for it is such that I managed to wrap a cord around a structure at exactly a point I wanted and the thread bent in the exact way it would do in real life. In short this is not a "scary metal gear" this is a completely new game, see a review video on youtube and go in with the correct expectations and you will not be disappointed. if however you are looking for a shooter game, please refer to Gears of War or Call of Duty which should suit your needs perfectly.

They made a game mechanic of the over encumber mechanics of other RPGs. I'm thorough with my play through and I get some repetition of some cut scenes here and there, but it's skippable so it doesn't bother me that much, and there are a lot of them so I'm surprised it lastet this long without repetition.

It's something somewhat original, and deserves praise just for that even though some people find it boring. And game mechanics wise, it just works.

If you don't hate it right off the bat and can't decide on if you like it, give it a chance to at least chapter 3, that's when world building stuff comes into play and the world gets more "alive", you don't meet other players directly, but you encounter signs of them throughout the game from here on.

While I think most who experience the story in full would be quite moved by it, it is unlikely that those who cannot bear the monotonous gameplay will see it through. The themes of loneliness together with the importance of cooperation make a well balanced experience in guiding Sam through his grueling journey in this post apocalyptic America. This game, as with all of Kojima's games, serve as a message, or warning, as well as a dramatic cinematic piece. At times you will feel serenity as you reach the peak of a snowy mountain, at others you will be bored, and just wishing you're at your destination already while stumbling over jagged rocks. It is a very subjective experience in terms of whether you are willing to endure the hardships in front of you. Expand

I was half tempted to give this game a 10 to counter act the zeros, A game to me with a zeros, means to me as if the game doesn't work, hell even a 1 Thru 3 means it's playable but is a buggy and the game may be incomplete. If you rated the game 4 or 5 at least you gave a crap to rate it some what fairly even tho the 4 rating is bit on the low side but I could not logically figure out disqualification for such a number.

With that being side I would like to review the game by making counter points to some of low rated comment/scores Heck I might even agree.

    ----------------------
MrDayvs -"This game is proof that GAMEPLAY in a videoGame is truly important"

Counter point : I would argue the "gameplay" which is fun, rewarding (At Least to Connection Bond 4) slightly addicting and is integral for what the story he wanted to tell so it is important. The way I feel about the gameplay which some say is "unique" is almost akin too Harvest Moon games in my opinion in stead of farming for hours to get money, you deliver packages to get materials and new building/equipment. instead romancing and befriending villagers, your do that with cities and since you can get max bonds with every city (they give you a star to put on your leg when you do)
    -----------------------

Tom-Pendragon -"The endless grind of walking around and watching meaningless cutscene with characthers we don't even know. There is no connections between us and Sam bridget and his friends"

Counter Point: Most of the time doesn't need be a grind unless your going for max bonds on every city if your a completionist then yes a grind is waiting for you but most of the time drooping off one sam package order is enough to keep the story moving (but I will note I said most, since sometimes you need to do 2 sam orders)

As for the "Meaningless cut scenes" in general I would say their is meaningless ones but most don't involve characters. Example going back to base to heal your fatigue can consist 4 mini cut scenes if you bring a vehicle to get healed and that's just to get into the room. To max your max stamina you will need to drink 3 cans and that is 3 mini cut scenes. Then leaving the base you can get 1 to 3 more mini cut scene, but I would argue that one of them the "Shared BB28 Memories" (I would like to highlight it's quoted for a reason) are not meaningless, but you can end up watching the same one over. since that is on a loop for the most part. But guess it's worth noting you can skip the mini cut scene, but I wish their was more quality to life features, like auto skip viewed cut scene and auto can feature as this just becomes tedious and might just be their to waste the players time.

As for "meaningless cut scenes with characters we don't even know" I would argue that is the point of a cuts scenes so you can get to know them and their involvement within the story.

One more part of his statement to pick apart "There is no connections between us and Sam bridges and his friends" Ether this reviewer is miss guided and didn't beat the game or he's telling bold face lie. When you begin the game one might feel this way but I would say what links you to Sam is the time you spent on the journey West and as for his Friend the game dose a good job of showing the links if played to completion.

As Tubey's Review is well written and it seems like he has a better grasp of the game but I see Things I can counter point and he did give it 3 unless he changes the score once more and sadly it's so big that I may not be able to cut thru all of it but I digress.

Tubey -" let's just say that there is zero subtlety throughout. There are characters such as Fragile and Die-Hardman - they are their names, not nicknames as you'd expect, and they are presented as such with not a hint of sarcasm or self-awareness. They simply spell out explicitly the main trait of the character. The main character is a porter who builds bridges, so naturally his name is Sam Porter Bridges. This is the level of 'on the nose' we're dealing with here"

Counter Point: The thing I see wrong here is that Die-Hardman is a nickname but it dose show his traits but Fragile is 100% a birth given name at least that's what story seems to say and dose not highlight her traits it sort of spits in the face of that notion.

Tubey " 10% of it is running from harmless enemies"

Counter Point: I would say yes you run form them, but if you played on very hard, they are not harmless they could spell death easily if they catch up to you or a few stray bullets hit. But I will say the ai is stupid with Bola Gun you can hide in the grass take out the whole camp

Well I'm running out of room so I need to end the abstract review but overall it's good game that's flawed.

Death Stranding is an odd game and that's what makes it great. It dares to be different and pulls it off well. The themes and setting is amazing and somehow I enjoy delivering peoples packages more than I expected.

    Honestly, it's not for everyone.
If you enjoy a methodical slow pace experience, one that requires some juggling and resource management with the only real reward being is self satisfaction that you did a good job, then you will have a good time.

If your looking for a break neck all out action adventure then look elsewhere.

MGS this ain't, it is something a bit different though..

very hard to define this one.
its obviously not as bad as the haters want to portray, it is a kojima game after all, it cant actually be that bad, its mathematically impossible. but it really has some big flaws, specially with controls that, in a game like this, sould be perfect and it is far from it.
nevertheles i loved the game, trekking around the world took me to such a spiritual

nevertheles i loved the game, trekking around the world took me to such a spiritual jouney that i cant really talk about yet, ive just finished it, btw.
graphics are amazing, and the musics... damn. all songs here are from bands i already love for years, and they blend so perfectly with the beautiful vistas, and even with the tasks you're supposed to accomplish. its just marvelous
i dont know exactly what to rate.
7 seems way too low, 8 seems like a little bit too much when i remember the frustrating moments i've passed.
so to me this is a liquid rating. it tottally flows towards 7 or 8. even going higher or lower than thse limits.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
