    Gameplay:

it's fast pace, hectic, all balls to the walls gunplay has you fully immersed into its insane, sprawling open world from start to finish. It's worth noting that I personally found the main story missions on the lengthy side which isn't a negative because I certainly got my 'bang-for-buck' but I'd prefer some of the missions to be broken down into sections or parts just so I don't have to keep ending my sessions mid-mission (< - this is a small gripe but something I needed to mention).

There are plenty of entertaining side missions to keep you laughing your head off whilst also feeling rewarded for your efforts, I think it's here where the game shines most, as the side missions make you feel integral to the objectives! - which leads me onto my next point...

Traversing the game was great when you had a vehicle & driving around is allot of fun especially when you start customising to your preference! & theirs always a 'Catch-a-ride' within walking distance should you need one.. although I'd love an option to have vehicles spawn to your location & more variety such as motorcycles & air vehicles!

    Story:

The story of Borderlands 3 is packed with fun and interesting characters which adds to the bonkers nature of the rich, detailed world you're playing in. Borderlands 3 had me laughing from beginning to end & is jam packed full of easter eggs & pop culture references! I think the overall point-by-point story was fun & written well enough, there were definitely a few forced character progressions that seemed to jump from zero to hero pretty much just like that! My issue is that you, the player seem to have no real impact on the story, the game uses pre-rendered cutscenes for some of it's main missions and they're really well written & animated cutscenes.. just.. you're never in them, things happen in these cutscenes that leave you scratching your head thinking "Why isn't my character doing something about this?" and as soon as you notice this, it sticks out like a sore thumb and makes you feel like you're on a rollercoaster ride as a bystander of the story rather than you having any impact in narrative. This for me was the biggest letdown & this is what overall has impacted my final score the most, however I'm sure many have & will look past this & you should because aide from this borderlands 3 is an excellent game!

    Graphics:

So on the technical side I want to say that this game is beautiful! the Borderlands franchise has always had a fresh, unique aesthetic which makes it stand out from the rest! I was playing this on a PS4 Pro & noticed that textures would take some time to fully load this was not too much of a deal beaker for me, however it did feel a little sloppy, this was especially noticeable after fast traveling o a location, where my map and quests would also take extra time to load & other times this was just random.

The word takes place on various planets & each planet is broken up into sections, this means that if you're constantly moving from place to place then you're hit with a loading screen.. I'm sure this is all down to technical limitation of current general hardware & something we can wave goodbye to when the next generation hits this holiday season! - but alas, I still had to mention it & it does pull you out of the experience somewhat!

    Moving Forward:
    Borderlands 4 needs to:

    1) Incorporate the player(s) into the main story & make you feel integral to the story, whilst also breaking main missions down into more bitesize pieces where appropriate!

    2) Transitioning from one map to another needs to be simultaneous, with no loading barriers.

    Verdict:

Borderlands 3 is allot of fun and it's easy to just focus on all the niggles and nit picks but when you brush that aside, you have a fun, bonkers & well made game to get lost in & just have fun!

I imagined that hearing about the post-game mode "mayhem" that it would be something like Diablo 3 adventure mode where it's just fight after fight, loot on top of loot. Nope, not at all. It's just the same game. Extremely annoying NPC chattering ON AND ON AND ON.

I was enjoying the leveling but now I have little to no desire to play. Tired of restarting my game just so a reload can fix these broken quests. This game has more bugs and busted abilities than I've ever seen in a shooter game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am not one to leave a review for games but for Borderlands 3, I had to. What in the world is going at Gearbox, did they change writing staff, 'cause the story really sucks ass. Why is the focus placed heavily on Ava, and the way they seem to be killing off characters is amazing. I really love the improvements with fast travel, theguns (100% better than Anthem), and Im really love the way boss fights are sat up, however the story is way too short. I love Borderlands. It's safe to say it's in my top 5 favorite game franchises of all time (including Final Fantasy, Diablo, Metal Gear Solid, and Mass Effect). After they announced the release date for Borderlands 3, I took off a week from work (which I NEVER do!) to make sure I had time to get through the story and have fun with no stress. I'm a Zane main since launch, and I absolutely love this game. I held off for a long time writing a review though, because I knew there would be multiple expansions and changes, and as of writing this they have released three of them (the last being Bounty of Blood). But I feel like the game is at it's best right now in my opinion, so now's as good a time as any.

The gunplay is fantastic, possibly up there among the best shooters I've played recently. Since day one, I've been addicted to finding new weapons, trying them out, and finding which ones fit my play style the most. For endgame, there was a period over the last few months where there were only a handful of viable weapons though. But since the last patch recently I feel like they'd alleviated that (but it's still limited for some builds). But during leveling on a first playthrough, the loot is exciting and you're always finding something new to play around with. Leveling up in this game was one of my favorite experiences playing a looter-shooter. While the endgame doesn't have as much variety in my opinion, there's still tons of legendaries to collect and the gameplay is fun and addictive enough to let you forget that you're using the same weapons for the most part.

Where the game starts to fall apart for me, and for many others, is the story. No spoilers, but if you're a fan of Borderlands 2's story there's a good chance you might dislike this one. There are good moments to be sure, but overall I felt it was lacking. For me, this was mostly due to the villains. Hard to follow Handsome Jack. I also couldn't even tell you right now why things were happening near the end of the story, it's just not memorable for me. I was paying attention, but it just wasn't as interesting as looting things and finding new gear.

I feel like the story is about a 6 and the gameplay for me is a 9-10, so overall I'll give it an 8. It's a game I feel like you could come back to every once awhile to try out a new build or play through a new expansion or event. Another great thing about it to me is that it's not like Destiny or Division though, those games I always feel like I need to play all the time to be rewarded. This is something I can dip into when I feel like it, and I don't have the need to log in every single day.

So I'd say it's definitely worth your time and money, especially since it's now on sale all the time.

That being said, this isn't enough to hold up the game. There is nothing strikingly new here, nothing pops out as innovative or allows it to stand out from the other entries. The story is exhausting and predictable and the player has no real impact with cut scenes feeling like an outer body experience, the characters that populate the worlds are far from interesting and often a parody. Bosses are forgettable. Areas of the game are stale. Pop culture references are scattered through out, sometimes very much cringe worthy.

If you want to mow down waves of enemies with your buddies in an end game for generated loot ultimately hitting your level and guardian rank caps then by all means this game is worth a go as a co op experience at max level but then what?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Inexcusably bad performance, nonstop 'kill or be killed' game play, starked around a boring story about a group of vault hunters. The biggest letdown is the FPS lag on a PS4 Pro - I've not experienced anything this poorly ported before on this console - getting less than 30 FPS. There is a performance adjustment in the settings but that is bad way of covering up low quality porting. I shouldn't have to chose on a higher end console between performance and high quality visuals.

As for the visuals the environments are pretty and for the 10 hours I put into the game I enjoyed some of the things I viewed, but there was little desire to keep playing because of shuttering.

Creeps never die and are always respawned in their original locations. Seems like fun if I want to constantly grind, but if I wipe out a level 1 camp I don't expect to encounter it again when I go through that section on my way back to base. In addition the leveling system seems boring and just because I can upgrade to higher dps weapons there is no difference between my toon at level 3 and 9 outside of some perks I chose. Speaking of, it conceptually seemed cool to be able to use these skills in battle but I wasn't impressed by the need to use them in battles.

Most battles are shoot, throw a grenade, use some sort of special skill perk, repeat. I didn't get too much enjoyment out of running through the same waves of enemies but this time in 'vr' aka a blue filter on the screen and a special semi-boss before I could finish my objective. BORING!

The writing reminds me of dad joke puns paired with the same type of borderlands game play from this series 2nd installment. I couldn't even bring myself to really laugh at some of the corny jokes and the mature rating was more comical than the stupid jokes I heard.

This is a game I regret buying (thankfully I got it preowned and can still return it) because this game lacks in many ways. I typically don't find myself bored within a half hour of game play and with this it felt more like a chore to play than to enjoy spending my time grinding through the same low-level camps I already cleared, twice. I would avoid this one.

There's personality everywhere - from the art painted on the walls in each world to the characters and dialogue to the funky costumes and hair to the creative guns to the little trinkets on the side of the creative guns to the light color change on the PS4 controller depending on the element you're wielding. Some of that is cosmetic but it's that same love and detail that goes into a lot of what the game has to offer on it's deeper layers.

The shooting mechanics are top notch and (when well built) your game character can feel like you're in three different types of shooters depending on what gun you have equipped. The Jakobs brand gives you an old school Medal of Honor or Call of Duty feel with iron sights while the Torgue brand can give you a Doom or Duke Nukem feeling with explosive ammo and splash damage. During my rise to Level 50 I had battles that felt like Western shooters as I fell backwards off a dusty cliff and then some that felt like the Moonraker mission in Goldenye with all lasers. The range is very wide and it is very fun.

The sound is an absolute highlight in the game as it is crystal clear and unique. There are so many guns (like, so many guns) and so many have unique sounds and shooting mechanics. The intense gun battles are punctuated by the crisp sound effects and it is overwhelmingly satisfying to hear the explosions and popping and clicking of the wrath you rain down in the game. It feels so good. This highlight can be extended to the great voice acting as well.

The story is solid and makes a clear statement about the millennial culture that we’re living in. You get to meet a host of fun characters on each planet, a highlight of which comes in the form of a stuffed teddy bear later on in the game. Unfortunately, most of the characters reprised from 2 can be dry or generally non interesting. Which is a total bummer because they were all so great in the previous installment. While characters like Hammerlock, Lillith, and Tannis are still great it feels odd to see a whole host of old characters again that aren't nearly as fun as the last time you saw them.

Uniquely, this is also a game where moments of beauty and tranquility can be found in certain pockets on each planet. There were many times I would have an epic battle against a beautiful sunset backdrop or in an Asian-inspired monastery and then stand for a few minutes to take in all of the detail. The level design has noticeably improved from the previous title, the navigation of which is a dramatic step up from the previous title. The Jurassic Eden-6 offers a high canopy and lush greenery while Promethea is a big outer-space moon rock you can glide through. There are still a couple of maps that feel congested and not fun to run around, the biggest ding of which is on the new Sanctuary. It's the hometown of the game so it's a place that must be revisited more than any other. it's by far the most claustrophobic and even after 70 hours of running through it I still get lost. It isn't a fun place to keep coming back to and you have to KEEP coming back to it. When compared to the hometown in Borderlands 2 it's a significant step down and a very boring world in an otherwise exotic one.

The RPG elements are very solid and can make for some incredibly fun variations depending on your build. There are so many options that there's a way to make a very middle of the road character that may prevent some users from being able to experience the sharpness the game can offer as you weave through the gun fights. When focused on one skill tree you can really see the power your build can bring. The game can absolutely get repetitive after extended play but the level up rewards and new equipment comes quick enough that there's always a great new robotic rabbit to chase around the track as you grow.

There's a load of things to do after the credits like New Game+ and Guardian Ranks/Mayhem Mode or side-quests or multi-player game types where you fight off hordes of enemies with strangers or friends. At the time of this review, I found the matchmaking to be very slow and it was difficult to find people to play with; over five minutes to find even one person sometimes. That's tough two months after a games release. Not sure if that's a 2k thing or not... The game is exponentially more fun while playing with others so the hope is that Gearbox makes that more accessible soon.

If you're looking for a game to get this holiday season this one will last for months. If you've got friends that got it too then even better. Playing for a short time or a long time the game is a fun time. Good work, Vault Hunter.

As mentioned in other reviews the inventory management is somewhat annoying and could definitely be improved.

I have also run into other bugs as well. One where the "slam-jump" animation kept reoccurring over and over. The other was the gunshot sound turned off.

Both only happened once and went away when restarting the game. If it wasn't for these bugs or the annoying inventory management I'd give this game a 9.

In addition in my first play through I experienced quite a lot of bugs which I would have expected to be patched by now considering the passed time since the release. However, this did not stop me from enjoying the game and all the things it threw at me, even playing solo was a blast and made me want to progress on the other characters as the randomised loot and enemy variations kept the game from feeling stale and repetitive.

An overall good game that I recommend anyone picks up who enjoyed BL2 or similar games like destiny or RPG-like titles.

But what takes a lot of the score in this review and makes me feel empty is the way it manages the story and some of its characters. First, the story is actually not bad, but is not the best. The reason relies on the different characters that are presented, some of them really loveable ones, and how little they are developed during the game, this could have been supplied with more secondary misions, leading to a mayor progression, mission diversity and more in game hours of content, that is translated in just plain Borderlands fun.

So in essence, the base game needs more optional missions, more character development and just plain Borderlands essences with more funny jokes, such as a classic like Face Mcshooty as an example.

For a game based on just shooting people the gunplay really sucks. There are no tactics involved. All you need to do is aim the gun and then press the shoot button and you will win fight if you have good enough gear.

One positive are of course the amount of guns. Its insane how many guns there are in the game. However there still isnt a DPS-counter in the game. WHY? It would be so much more convenient to pick which gun to use with a DPS-counter.

There is a open world in this game tho, but it sucks. Its so dead and stale. Its just an empty excuse for an open world where the only thing to do is to get guns, over and over and over again.

I personally couldnt play this game for more than an hour without getting bored because of how repetitive it is.

I've played Borderlands 1 and 2 (and the Pre-sequel), and this is essentially Borderlands 2.1. One of my major feelings was of deja vu - I just felt that I had played the game already, with its repetitive loop of shooting, looting and upgrading basically unchanged since the first installment, with few meaningful updates. Maybe others enjoy this type of gameplay more, but I got tired of it quite quickly. The game also feels very dated - I was never a great fan of the cartoony graphics back in 2009 when the first game came out, but by now I just found them bland and boring-looking. Then there's the humour. Perhaps it's merely that I am now older, but the constant stream of very lame jokes now just seems cringey (when in the past it mainly just washed over me). Finally, the game was waaay too easy - for long periods, I never even bothered upgrading my weapons or using skill points, because it rarely felt necessary: enemies, including bosses, seemed to die with just a few blasts of whatever I happened to have equipped. If you've never played a Borderlands game, you may get more out of this than I did, but disappointed is the main word I would use to describe my experience. Expand

Borderlands 2 left me feeling complete and happy, Borderlands 3 left me frustrated and tired.

BL3 is a step back in almost every regard, the writing that BL2 set and Tales perfected has gone down the drain, and in its place is an incessant cringe humour that never seems to take a break, for every good joke, there's 10 bad ones. The standout good writing comes squarely in the form of older characters like Hammerlock and Lilith, almost everybody else is just painful.

Where BL2 had one of the best written antagonists in video game history, BL3 has Twitch Streamers who never seem to shut the f*ck up. Troy and Tyreen might be my most hated characters in this entire franchise, and I can't stand that little b*stard in the Pre-Sequel who calls his dad every time you go within a 5 mile radius of him on the Moon. They just make me groan with every line, they talk like 12 year olds imitating their favourite e-celebrity, though BL2 had immature humour, "butt stallion" comes to mind, what made it funny was the context. Handsome Jack is a billionaire psychopath who murders people for fun, and he calls you up and names a horse "butt stallion" just to mock you, it's funny, Troy saying "you eat butts" is not funny, it's stupid.

Last on my chopping block is Ava, oh this little cretin is just the worst. Ava is a character with which the sun revolves around according to this game, getting a beloved character killed, blaming Lilith for this for almost the entire game, and finally being entrusted with Sanctuary at the end of the game, without ever being told off or reprimanded for her bratty behaviour, she's a constant source of annoyance and she's only ever rewarded for it, it's infuriating.

With characters out of the way, lets talk about the Gameplay; it's good, it's fun, fast, chaotic and if you're on a PS4 Pro or PC, the game runs very smoothly, it's a fun game that sees your efforts constantly rewarded with great, unique guns and a very quick Level Up process, complete with a very diverse range of options for your Character Build, personally I'm about as skilled as a grape with hands glued to it, so I played The Operator and mainly focused on upgrading my damage resistance and my Drone and Clone abilities, which made me a very Tanky boy who almost never died, and even when I went into the Down State, my Drone or Clone would be able to kill an enemy and get me right back up.

Story wise, it's nothing special, Twitch Kids are doing evil sh*t so go stop 'em, and for the most part, it's a fairly enjoyable ride, until around the last third, which drags on and on and on AND ON AND ON. It never ends, there's even a part where you say goodbye to everybody and you fight the twins, and the game just sorta... keeps going, it's really poorly paced and ruins the last 15 hours with boring, fetch quest BS, it leaves a horribly sour taste after a fairly enjoyable game and ruins the entire experience. And that ending... oh god that ending...

Overall, BL3 while better than The Pre-Sequel, is worse than every other game in the series, the writing isn't there in quality or comedy, and not even the gameplay can save it from being a, annoying, irritating game filled to the brim with middle fingers to fans of the previous games, I never thought I'd wish for retcons, but oh boy I really hope some of this stuff gets retconned.

The borderlands franchise never failed In making hectic, fun and fast paced shooting games and this is a very good improvement compared with the other game with a tighter and more smooth gunplay mechanic. The story, the comedy elements and lootboxing doesn't live up to the previous game installments and some slight UI issues.Still a must play for any diehard borderlands fan.

Good gameplay. Unfortunately the story is atrocious. I'd even go as far as saying that ride to hell retribution has a better story, its that bad. Not to mention that 30fps is awful for fps games. Definitely the worst out of the series

Remember when these guys made Duke nukem forever? Yeah it's one of those games, self aware of how long it took and introduces too many new mechanics, muddys the story far too much, and over all wasn't fun. How you mess up making a BORDERLANDS game fun is beyond me.

Borderlands 3 has best sidequests in the series, a lot of the side quest are better than the main story line which sometimes makes no sense and can be cringey at times. Gameplay in B3 is great, there are more guns than ever. You can spend hours farming that one gun you really want.

The game play was enjoyable, similar to borderlands 2 but updated, I had no issues with that. My main issues are with the story and the writing. Many beloved character from the previous games are disrespected or completely missing from the game, and the new characters are awful. I won't play again until they add the ability to skip cut scenes so i don't have to experience that sad excuse for a main story again.

This review applies only to the base game, i haven;t played any of the the DLC yet.

After an eternity, Borderlands 3 released and while there were many quality of life changes, there were also many problems with menu lag and poor UI, that made the game unsatisfactory to play. The story is also unpleasantly long and with the awful antagonists, I can only pray for those that have to endure the later vault hunter modes. The gunplay is clean with incredible sound designs, and the worlds themselves are stunning and unique, however, for the wait we had, it wasn't worth it.
Moreover, Mayhem mode doesn't feel like mayhem and has counter-intuitive logic to its gear.

Let's hope that after all the dlc is released along with its patches, that Borderlands 3 will live up to what it was meant to be.

Millions of copies sold but no online player presence in the new dungeon and adventure systems - only once found a game online which had poor multiplayer preformance and kept trying to find sessions throughout my hours playing and nothing. Clearly a big issue with regional servers which caused the big limitations which were bad enough to make the game feel like nobody was playing it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly have mixed feelings about this. For me BL2 was one of my favorite games of all time. I became invested in the characters, lore, everything.

First the good. This game is in fact a superior game to BL2, the gunplay is more fluid, enemies actually rag doll, the addition of sliding and ledge climbing was great and made you feel more mobile. It has a number of quality of life changes too, like in general making money useful instead of useless, letting you teleport from anywhere and giving you tons more space in your pack and bank to store things. I loved all of that. The artistic direction and music is once again unrivaled. The Voice Acting for a majority of the cast was fantastic.

So why did I give it a 5? Honestly I was tempted to go even lower but stopped myself for want of being fair. Not only to the game but the people who put in so much time, passion and effort into whats here. The majority of developers did an incredible job and deserve so much recognition. They deserve their bonuses which Gearbox illegally decided to withhold from them.

A product is a sum of its parts, its only as strong as its weakest link. And the weakest link here is its story. The story was the most infuriating, insulting, insufferable, BORING, story for a game I think I've ever played. I seriously think I liked Turok 2008's story more.

Favorite characters including mine(Axton) from BL2 are no where to be found and not even mentioned. They don't do a good job explaining any event post BL2 for people like myself who have no interest in the "tales" series, so I was immediately confused and horrified to casually hear that Scooter died in the time gap. I was even more horrified when they killed of Maya for a cheap "well it worked with Roland" moment that was neither earned nor made sense. All the humor is something that a 12 year old boy might find funny which was in BL2 but here literally EVERYONE is more annoying than Claptrap, a character designed to be annoying. There are no straight men to even play off of as the rest of the fan favorites are maybe in 30 minutes of this 40 hour game.

The main villains? Listen I never expected them to top Jack. And to be honest, I liked the twins as a concept, I really did. Serine antagonists felt like a proper threat, but again the being more annoying than Claptrap while also being Merry/Gary Sues/Stues just ruin them. The entire meta commentary on "streamers" fell completely flat on their face while insulting us, gamers, as mindless cult members who blindly listen to what ever their favorite streamer says. My interest in this franchise is completely dead. Best parts of this game were its DLC packs which I can't even include in this review or else it might go up to a 6 or 7. The rest is just garbage writing.

Pick it up on sale if you want to play it for the gameplay and environments. Skip the story.

Movemet, maps and gunplay far exceeds its the previous installments by far. The varied skill augments and action skill allow for a wide range of play styles for all the vault hunters and being able to swap them on the fly makes for very engaging combat encounters. Mayhem levels still need some work they are not a requirement for the game, only a few of the mayhem 6+ weapons are worth but the couple that are make great additions to the players arsenal.

Summary, Don't play this game for the story it will disappoint, play because you like to fight and find some very fun gear to aid in the fights

Its a good game. The guns feel good, I really enjoyed the art style. The maps are interesting to explore a d very detailed. The villains are not so great, cringey and not having good motivations. The story is below decent but I am not looking for a good story in this type or games. The side quests are very good. Its and overall fun game that I rocommend with tons of content.

Factor in the graphical glitches, rampant texture pop-in and generally asthmatic performance levels, even when running on a PS4 Pro with settings optimised to favour smooth running, and there really is no end of reasons not to love Borderlands 3 (and don’t even think about Googling developers Gearbox Games’ litany of employee relations history)...And yet... love it, I do. Guilty as charged.
