Unfortunately, this is a pretty atrocious game. Horrible plot, annoying characters, and virtually no laughs after 20 hours... This was not how I imagined a Borderlands experience would be. This all being said, the core gameplay is quite tight and the guns are as satisfying as ever. The citizen science arcade game was insanely cool as well. It's just far from enough to keep me playing.

I finally forced myself to finish this game, so months late but at least I slogged through it.

The Pros: Despite pretty severe lag, especially if one person opens up their menu, couch co-op is still fun, even in spite of the horizontal screen split. The combat is fun for the first fifteen hours, and the types of guns to experiment with is insane; I didn't even realize until the last boss fight that 'Adaptive' guns stick an alien parasite on the front. Some jokes also land pretty well, and the game still has the chaotic fun of the previous entries.

The Cons: This might be the most repetitive game I've ever played. Literally you will be fighting the same enemies throughout the entire game, and since they scale as you level, there will literally be no difference in fights. Boss fights and quests are pretty unimaginative once you dig beneath the surface, and the writing gets old fast. The jokes don't seem as smart as the first two; the punchline for 50% of the jokes is literally about turds. That feeds into another problem in this game, which is just lazy writing. They constantly just fall back on jokes instead of trying to do any character progression or storytelling. You find out about the main villains' motivations in the 11th hour of the game, and it's such a pointless, stupid reveal that you just shrug. I found myself praying for the game to end for the last five hours, only to land in a new map that I barely bothered to explore--because why should I? The baddies are the same everywhere, and at a certain point, the sheer volume of basic guns thrown at your face also makes the experience pointless.

Conclusion: The game's basic formula just hasn't aged well over the past decade. It's like we all grew up, and Borderlands didn't bother. They just rinse-repeat the same bad guys, the same combat, the same juvenile jokes, even the level layouts are the same--so that every shootout feels like you've been there before. They even keep dragging along the same NPCs throughout the game, which is fine for nostalgia's sake, but at a certain point, why even bother?

Been addicted to Borderlands since the first game. The only one I never got into was the pre sequel. I am having just as difficult a time getting into this one. The 2 main villains are absolutely cringe worthy but even ignoring that I still can't seem to get into this. I had such high hopes too.

The humor has always been dumb on purpose, the jokes often didn't land, it's always been silly and endearing at best except for a few good lines. Borderlands 3 is ultimately a disappointing game. I've experienced every title in the series across multiple platforms, and i can safely say that the conclusion of the main trilogy is a mixed bag that gets some things right and others very, very wrong.

First, i have to complement the game's mechanics. Borderlands 3 is a shooter-looter (the series literally pioneered the concept) and the shooting and looting has never been better. Combat is immensely satisfying and visceral. I chose Moze the Gunner for my playthrough and had a blast (no pun intended) as I slaughtered my way through entire groups of enemies with my mech, which I steadily upgraded over time into a complete juggernaut. The different gun manufacturers all look, behave, and feel very different from one another and you'll quickly find your favorites. Small tweaks have also been made to combat such as a power slide, ground slam, and the ability to grab and climb ledges. My favorite though has to be the ragdoll physics that can occur when an enemy gets hit with a shotgun blast or explosion.

The gameplay of Borderlands 3 is complemented by its impressive loot, which is to say you're absolutely drowned in new weapons, grenade mods, shields, etc. at a constant basis. It can be heartbreaking to have to give up a gun you really love due to finding a better one at a higher level, but at least the game never feels stagnant. There's also an abundance of legendary weapons and gear, much of which is referential to other games and elements of pop culture.

Sadly, however, this is where the glowing praise ends because outside of the fun and improved gameplay elements, Borderlands 3 misses the mark entirely. If you're a fan of the series like I am, you don't just come to Borderlands for the shooting and looting. There's an overabundance of games available that feature fun shooter gameplay and an addictive loot grind. Half of the appeal of Borderlands comes from its uniqueness, writing, style, and personality. It's the "soul" that brings the excellent gameplay to life. That soul has all but disappeared.

Storywise, Borderlands 3 is basically The Last Jedi for the franchise. There's an blatant agenda focused around female empowerment that is constant throughout the entire experience, up to and including an absolutely cringeworthy ending. The female characters are almost exclusively the main focus of the game, both heroes and villains, especially an obnoxious and detestable Mary Sue character named Ava. Almost very male main character in the game is either inconsequential, a blithering idiot, gay, or ends up dying.

Borderlands 3 also treats established characters the way The Last Jedi did: It ruins the ones you love in favor of replacing them with new ones with no substance then tries to get you to care about them. Characters from previous games are treated like garbage if they even show up at all. Vaugn and Rhys are made into clowns, Lilith is helpless and sad, and Brick, Mordecai, and Tina barely show up at all. One character in particular gets such a dishonorable and pathetic death for such a contrived reason that I almost wanted to stop playing the game because of it. More politics is shoved in with one new character expressing the desire to become trans in an audio log and Hammerlock getting a boyfriend with every other line they have together being about their relationship. Also worth mentioning is that half of the established cast fails to show up whatsover. No one outside of Vaugn and Rhy from Tales is there. Axton, Gaige, Kriege, and Salvador are gone. Even Dr. Zed is nowhere to be found. He's been a mainstay in every main entry and he's just not nonexistent. He's never even brought up at all by anyone else, either. It's a damn shame.

The humor in Borderlands 3 is mildly entertaining at best and painful at worst. Unfunny one-note jokes pepper the dialogue in a way that makes it seem like the script was written by 13-year-old Tumblr bloggers. A few bits are genuinely funny, but not much else. It's sad how the quality of the writing has deteriorated since Anthony Burch left. Bottom line: Don't expect hilarity or meaningful character development from Borderlands 3 because you definitely won't get it. It's truly as bad as the rest of the internet says it is.

Glitches aren't what they used to be, but they still exist. Texture pop-in and subtitle bugs were the most notable, although I did have to restart due to a quest enemy getting stuck in a wall and the game has hard crashed once in my 30 or so hours of playtime.

Borderlands 3 is a fun missed opportunity. The gameplay and mechanics have improved, but all of the personality has been sucked out, leaving an enjoyably addictive but disappointing experience for fans. There are plenty of good times to be had, but it's definitely not what it should have been.

And I played on PS4 Pro so I can't complain about the performance. Worked pretty well for me. Unfortunately I have no desire to keep playing. Looting & shooting is only as fun as your purpose in the world, and without a solid story or writing, there is no purpose.

So, it's been a while since I've written a review and after replaying one of my most playable games of all time--Borderlands 2 and it's subsequent last DLC, and with the experience still fresh in my mind, all I can say about Borderlands 3 is...

    It's meh.

The game doesn't even bother to set up the story properly as you're thrown into the game with nary a reason to any of the new Vault Hunters being on Pandora. Not only this but mainstays like Tannis or Moxxi, show up over your Echo to tell you to collect this or knockdown that. Look, I get that you know we all remember who these people are, the Vault Hunter though...has NO clue who any of these people are and just kinda goes along with it? If you're going to be lazy with setting up the game, don't expect us to think all the highly of the experience.

I know there several technical issues out, but my grievances are in the QoL realm. Here are just some:

~Font size and color. Why did you go with condensed, tiny font against generally dark backgrounds? Do you know how many times I lose the damn option to open a box because the font just disappears into the aether? BL2 had big old white fonts, you can see them all the time.

~Why am I forced to hold down the action button to fast travel? At least make it an option.

~Targeting/hitboxes are so unbelievably tiny in comparison to BL2 that I can lose entire clips by being a fraction of a hair off. In the early game, this becomes near game-breaking as some guns empty a whole clip and can empty your full ammo amount in less than a minute of firing, leaving you more often than not, with no ammo left.

~The lack of in-game badass ranks is a massive downer because leveling up means nothing more than more HP and a talent, which by the way, PUNISHES players due to NOT having any of those vital quirks available in actual play. Getting little choices to upgrade recoil reduction or gun damage helped bridge levels and growth of the character, while talent trees were dedicated solely to spec and style. Were are at the whim of the trees alone, and if you're early level to maybe middling level, you're screwed. In fact, some guns outright are a death sentence to use. Try using a shotgun with base damage, low mags, slow reloads, and no buffs? And some classes rely on that weapon! Just open up the badass ranks to the story!

~Enemies are disgusting bullet sponges, or Gun damage is majorly undertooled. Just from simple bandits of equal level or one up on down from current, I have guns that have a dmg output of 7 or 9 with a clip of 19. I can quickly pump an entire two clips into one bandit just to take them down, and that's including crits. That gun has max ammo of what? 340? And each bandit without missing is taking nearly 40 bullets to kill? And every gun is like this. I didn't actually start to enjoy myself until I got a Tangarine pistol with fire damage around level 9 and even then, ammo is so scarce I'm more concerned about conservation rather than ENJOYING THE GAME I'M PLAYING!!

~The niche, but self-aware, smart humor of the previous games is gone here as it's become more mean-spirited and crude. I get tastes change, but this devolved to a miserable state. Delivery and cadence of lines are gone. I know there's a new actor for Claptrap, but the one thing that made Claptrap great was automated, never ceasing positive delivery of lines. He didn't emote, he couldn't! This version does. It's like he got the emotional chip as Data did, and emotional Data sucked.

This game is just a letdown, pretty much a downstep from everything the prior did. The things BL2 did right should have been accentuated, both they weren't. Instead, it feels more akin to the devs had a chip on their shoulder when making it and it seeped into the actual game. There's no fun here, no quirky joy; just a modern-day shooter angling gameplay for a potential microtransaction system to be implemented (Oh you want badass ranks? Buy Torge BADASS COINS!!) Will I finish it? Yea, I paid for it, will I enjoy it like the past? Nope.

*Update 10/5: I'm about finished with the story, but I wanted to tag on a few "issues" I've come across.

~The developers and writers are nothing more than insecure, thin-skinned, middle-aged babies, that are threatened by young people. Play the mission "ECHOnet Neutrality" and then tell me I'm wrong.

~The overall tone of dialogue, story, and design belabors a contempt for the player base unlike ANY Gearbox has made before. I can almost hear Randy Pitchford gleefully saying "Oh, do that, that'll piss them off." There's so much of this in this game, I don't even know where to being. It's the whole thing. It's one thing to poke fun at things, it's another to make it your business to stab your hatred into the faces of all to see.

I don't want to see or play another Borderlands game again after this. That is the mark of just how miserable the devs made this.

Borderlands 3 is a bad game but a really good one its enjoyable but not enjoyable at the same time and that really pains me especially because Im a huge fan of the series while the old games made me laugh and i had a great time with them the third one was okay and sometimes even made me cringe

story: the story goes like this after the commander Lilith and the fight for sanctuary DLC you find yourself years later a new vault hunter trying to find the crimson raiders and join them only to realize that they are a mass you help out Lilith a bit and then you meet the most annoying cringe and just a teenage pain in the ass villains the calypso twins so you try to stop them while opening some vaults on the way

    cons:
the writing is very poor and they handled characters such as Maya Lilith Tannis and the new one Ava really bad to the point of me hating some of the characters

there are some awesome side missions but most of them are really cringe and never made me laugh or even crack a smile plus there are so few of them compared to the previous titles

there are a lot of performance issues and i played the game on the PS4 so i cant imagine whats going on on the PC version plus the game isn't that optimized which really made me mad

i consider this a con because although i support Women's rights this game just pushed it to much and it really felt like this game really hates man and glorifies woman to much

some of the new characters you get to choose are not that cool or original well i guess not counting fl4k hes awesome

there is barely any endgame content and no raid boss what so ever which was a big surprise to me because they always added a raid boss for max levels

not enough maps and most vaults you open later on are a huge disappointment

final boss is really underwhelming and bad i really hated the fact that they could make such a better final boss like in the second one but they went with a boring looking and easy to defeat final boss

they didn't bring back a lot of characters the community wanted them to such as Gaige axton Salvador
    Athena and many more

they completely ignored the endings of tales of the borderlands and the end of the pre squeal games and didn't even mention the endings which are completely canon

the main villains are just trash especially compared to handsome jack which is a legendary antagonist and is one of the main reasons why people go back to play the second game

the new characters they introduce not counting Balex because he is awesome are just plain boring

although they did bring back Tina Mordecai and Brick they barely included them in the main story which really pissed me off because they are the coolest characters ever also clap trap isn't used that much

the ending was just total trash and didn't conclude anything

    pros:
(now i know there are a lot of cons and i know a lot of people hate this game and give it really bad reviews but hear me out why its so good)

game play is just superb they basically some how made the gun play so much cooler and fun

the art style and graphics are just improved and somehow although the game is Cel-shaded its more detailed and just looks so much better

the guns and the amount that you can get and how they look is just wow im just amazed about how they added 1 billion guns to the game and literally if you replay the game your guns are just gonna be so much different than your previous play through which brings me to the next point and main point

the replay value in this game is just crazy you can easily spend 100 hours on the game or even more after they added dlc and events

dialog is so much improved and like in the pre squeal game they added voice lines to the characters you play which kinda gives more personality to them

there are side missions although few that are just way funny and just made me laugh all the time

the amount of references and Easter eggs are just awesome and because of them you actually explore the map more and find new stuff
the collectibles they added such Typhons recordings or the radio towers are a cool edition to the game they added more customization for the guns for cars and for the characters and all you have to do to unlock them is just to play the game no micro transactions no nothing there is co op and split screen and that is very rare for a game this days especially split screen mayhem mode is a cool edition to the endgame and brings more difficulty and chances to get legendary guns in conclusion as you see the story and the writing are the biggest downfall of the game but the game play is so much worth your time all the guns and the amount of fun you can have while playing with friends so my final score to Borderlands 3 is a 7 out of 10

That being said if you are contemplating this for couch co-op use then DO NOT BUY for the moment at the very least. The game is essentially unplayable in local co-op mode. There are massive framerate drops on a non PS4 Pro anytime a menu is opened for the other player. A smaller issue is if a tutorial for a menu item opens the obscured background actually bleeds into darkening half the other player's entire view. This won't be a potential problem for long in the game from a progress perspective but it's problematic. Another detractor is that the splitscreen is only horizontal and the UI scaling for text is absolutely terrible. Expect to squint and quickly experience headaches unless maybe you have a 100+ inch display. The instanced loot is really the only positive I can speak to for a co-op experience but trying to review your loot given the UI scaling you're going to need to be less than 3 feet from your display to read anything if playing local co-op.

In terms of single player or network co-op the experience is decent and I don't have any complaints in my gameplay thus far. For this the UI scaling is fine and text is legible. There are FOV sliders to customize your view to your preference which is good. Honestly I don't really see the reason in complaints that BL3 isn't some massive re-invention of the franchise. It's perfectly fine to me that it's essentially more borderlands. That's what I hoped for and why I bought it.

I'm also disappointed with the load times I've been seeing considering I've upgraded my PS4 with a large SSD so if you're still running the drive your system came with be aware load times will be even worse. Maybe a PS4 Pro with an SSD ekes out sufficient performance improvement but expect to be waiting several minutes transitioning between map zones.

If this was a single player or network only multiplayer title, I'd probably give the game an 8 or 9 rating but that assumes couch co-op was never something the franchise supported. The fact the poorer received pre-sequel handled local co-op better than another instance in the main franchise line is a great disappointment to me.

I really want to love this game, and when I’ve actually been able to play it I love it, but as of right now it’s...disappointing and unplayable. The redaction of the vertical split screen option means that on the long rectangular TVs it is almost impossible to read any of the text on the horizontal split screen. As the player on top, I can’t even look at what the top stats are for guns on the floor or in loot boxes! Honestly, even though there are crazy FPS drops when the menu opens, I was willing to deal with it in order to play with my bf. But upon having to continually read the tiny text on the horizontal split screen, I ended up getting a headache and had to stop playing. I can’t express how disappointed I am on the release of this game. It truly feels unfinished and rushed due to these performance and visual issues and I hope they are fixed soon. Honestly, I would stay away from this game until there is word on a patch to fix these problems. If I could, I would definitely have returned my copy until a patch was announced. Until then, I am going to wait as patiently as possible and try to be optimistic about Gearbox addressing these issues. Buy at your own risk. Expand

Base PS4 users being completely wrecked at the moment with huge loading times on top.

I have jitter and stutter when I set the deadzones to zero. My character literally hovers around uncontrolled which I had not in a single game before. The atmosphere is standard borderlands. If you liked the previous one probably you will like that one also. I still do miss some sort of evolution in such a game series with such an image to loose. What I dont understand is that it kinda feels like Handsome Collection 4K was actually more polished and also better looking then BL3. Only positive side note is that the sound in hifi mode is really well made and enjoyable.

The story is very bland so far and the jokes are kinda dull also. For beginners there is the usual tutorial but in my personal opinion not very well made. The character selection itself is so paper thin you dont actually really know beforehand what you get. Of course the game is about discovering the characters and stuff but come on.... its a triple A franchise, do I really have to google for character guides before I pick something?

I m sad that I pre-ordered and paid the full price. I think hardcore fans will enjoy the game as it is practically an expansion for BL2 without much evolution. For everyone else I would advice to wait for a price drop of at least 20-30% and some more fixes, especially if you are on base PS4 I highly suggest to not buy this game at the moment.

Everything will seem familiar from beginning to end, guns, characters, aesthetic, everything just gives you the same feeling of "been there done that" so don't expect anything innovative. For some people this is fine, but for me it's not. There are so many overused elements that don't justify the price tag and that's the reason I'm giving it a 5/10. - Future Updates - Gearbox updated and added so much to BL2 over the years, the hope is that they will do this for BL3 too because it really needs it.

    The bad:
    - The story - It's not entertaining at all, it's slow in places and really badly written.
    - Technical issues - on PS4 splitscreen you basically freeze when you open any menu.It is so annoying and frankly it should be fixed by now. The game crashes frequently. I played in single player and it wasn't so bad but if you want to play co-op wait until the game is fixed.
-End-game - At the moment it consists of replaying wave defense type scenarios and once you've done that, you increase the difficulty and do it again for more loot. It is fun but it does get repetitive.

It is a decent game, more borderlands but a lot of the Cameo characters feel like they were thrown in last min, some missions get stuck or glitch and require closing the game and opening it up again. Had some lag issues and also a weird glitch that makes my name and my group members names fly around the screen constantly which is not only distracting and annoying. I also feel that they killed off characters just to kill them off with characters making some very dumb decision that i felt was really forced. Endgame is already boring me and my friends who have already hit LVL 50 and gotten all the legendaries they want im currently LVL 47 with my other friend being 49 and it just feels like a chore to us to play the game to gather legendaries and match making takes a longtime as well, if anyone thinks its my internet i got 300 mbs download and 50 mbs upload speeds. But in conclusion it is more borderlands not a bad thing but it just feels like it could have been more. Expand

The pre-sequel definitely had its moments, but the best thing about it was the new characters/playstyles, nothing more. Ended up just going back to Bl2 after one or two playthroughs.

Now, I'm about halfway through BL3 and I have to say... getting similar vibes to the pre-sequel. You might argue that Im not fit to give a critique having not beat it, but right now... Im not sure I WILL beat it. Granted, they really improved on sound, added maybe a little more variety on weapons (though some of the new weapon sub-types are completely worthless) but overall, it feels very same-y.

The sense of getting new and better loot consistently has kinda disappeared, and only seems to happen on occasion. It feels like there are way fewer sidequests and areas to discover, even if some might argue its the biggest of all the games. The story is pretty garbage (like always).

To ME, the biggest problem is the new skill system. Each character has three trees as always, but from the few chars I've looked at, the trees dont always have a synergy between them. And some of the skills are just plain pointless. Ive been using the Siren so far, and Im currently deciding which of the second trees for me to choose is the least garbage.

I could nitpick for a while, given my past love for the series, but in the end, I have to say its an OK addition, but one I would have probably waited for a sale if I was able to play a little beforehand.

The negative side it is the buggy mess. Going in out of your inventory(which you will do quite often), creates serious lag, freezing at times. You will also run into lag issues periodically, during normal game play, which of course is annoying. For some people this might ruin the experience you are looking for. I have not done the split screen yet, but I heard it gets much worse. All in all I would recommend purchasing this game, just not now. - texture load not only when map loads, but very often when you approach the objects or even npc, you have to wait a second or two, for texture to load. This can be also easily spoted when aiming at npc or enemies with sniper rifer. Game assumes that you are not close enough to load textures, so you see low res textures
    - game simply doesn't look good. Character and weapon models are in fact improved, but the whole rest is not. It doesn't feel like current generation game

Story is made without much of a splendor. It's just jumping through different location, without a feeling of a purpose. Even when something 'big' is happening, the game doesn't success in presenting the magnitude of the event.

As much as I loved borderlands 2, that was 7 years ago. One of the borderlands 3 biggest flaws, is that it resembles too much borderlands 2. Too little things got changed compared to the sequel.

It still is a fun game once you suffer through technical issues, but it surely is not great, and I'm affraid might destroy or seriously damage the franchise in general. I played all the dlc's of previous borderlands, I don't feel like investing more money into b3. Even if you are borderlands fan, wait for patches and discounts.

From what I can say so far, the game is really fun:
    - loads of loot (drop-rate is decent compared to other games)
    - character personalities are trashy (but that's what it should I think) and you can feel that they have put in a lot of work
    - skill system is not too complicated
    - gun-handling and controls are fine as well
    - missions do vary at this point (but this might be a little too early to say)

Considering other games of this genre, the best content might come in the endgame so I might change my opinion further playing. at this moment I would say it's a fun game but nothing overwhelming.

Guns moving across the ground as if an AI was holding it and the sticky bomb guns having no legs to walk on yet behaves normally, those types of bugs. The game is far from being unpolished but it feels dusty.

    Borderlands 3 review

tl;dr Wait to buy. Unfinished classes/characters. Serious framerate/lag issues (PS4 Pro).

Had you asked me at or soon after launch, I probably would've given it 9/10 despite the frequent massive framerate and lag issues. However, given the recent round of "balancing" updates (with many more likely), I feel generous giving it 6/10. Gearbox had 7 years to develop this game; I will be merciless.

The core issue is the state in which this and many other games are being released. It's becoming normalized to release games that are more or less incomplete, many appearing more like Betas or even Alphas sometimes. If I know this is the case up front that's ok (Warframe). If I know it's a game as service (Destiny, Anthem, etc) I'm also more tolerant. If it's a AAA single/co-op player game that's "gone gold"? Totally unacceptable.

It took people just days to figure out OP builds and weapons, so all must suffer now while Gearbox nerfs/buffs classes and weapons in the name of "balance". Gearbox will probably repeat this "balancing" cycle for a few months (at least) while they actually finish the game, on our time, with our dime that we already spent on a game that was sold as complete.

The updates also made the game LESS stable for me on PS4. Pre-update I had 1 blue screen in 2 weeks. Post-update I had 4 blue screens in 4 hours. And that's nothing compared to all the poor people who had their Bank was erased. But we still have those pesky framerate and lag issues. You know, the actual problems with the game.

Post release updates for a solo/co-op game like this should be bug/exploit fixes, buffs and DLC ONLY. Not "We just now realized that a class that works as advertised is OP and now we need to fix it." TOO LATE! You already released the game. Better luck next time! (Also, it's solo/co-op PvE. Balance is nice, but does it really matter? Why not just buff the weak stuff and make enemies tougher if necessary?)

Now Gearbox has a big mess on their hands because fans are righteously pissed that they took stuff away from them. Stuff that they paid for. This is inexcusable. And it's completely and unequivocally Gearbox's fault.

I will not pay Gearbox to be their Beta tester. In fact, it kinda makes me want to attempt to get a refund just on principle. Instead, I will NEVER pre-order any game ever again. And I'm setting B3 aside for 3-6 months (or however long it takes for this **** to subside) before I pick it up again.

But then the whole game gets boring, the story is not really on top and you start to no longer listening to most dialogues. Only a few side missions are so hilarious that you get back to the good feel this game could have been delivering but the main story is pretty lame.
After the first "main" boss (to avoid spoilers) the game goes down continuously. Shooting doesn't make fun anymore. Most times you simply aim for the head and wait till the enemy finally hits the ground. Bigger enemies are bulletsponges and this continues till the end. The following main bosses are just that... bulletsponges with a lot of boom bang effects but nothing really to worry about besides the one or two times an unfair combination of effects hits you all of a sudden. A lot of effects a lot of bullets but you end up holding the fire button till the boss finally hits the ground - which can take a long time.
Then there's Mayhem-Mode after the story ends... well, all what's changing is the sponginess... if you switch directly to the highest Mayhem-Mode level you end up pumping dozens if not hundreds of bullets into small enemies that you were able to lay down with a couple crits beforehand. Sure, your weapons at that time aren't perfectly fitting, but the first drops of new gear show you how much the firepower will increase and really it doesn't scale as much as needed to make the game "fun" at all. If enemies need a hundred bullets to get downed and you just move a little bit to the left and right or cn even stay still the whole time (as Beastmaster with your pet) then this doesn't make fun at all.
    Boring ...
I stopped playing all side missions and looking into each corner of the map to explore for additional tasks after beating the second main boss. Reason: I was already around level 35 and most quest rewards were lower level compared to random drops. In addition only a handful of side missions then still had the difficulty of "normal", most were stated as "trivial", so I avoided them or crashed through within a minute or two. Not fun.
So, I ended up to beat the campaign and played one or two hours more to then look at the title and asking myself if I really should play the same boring stuff again with another character or not... currently the tendency is way closer to "not" unfortunately.

I liked the game. It was a solid 7 to 8/10 worse than Borderlands 2 but very cringe. However, the latest DLC is truly bad. The only thing for the Director's Cut are the weapons, which are somewhat interesting and/but very strong (e.g. Plasma Coil), but the idea is utter blandness (2/10). This costs the same as story DLC's? There is no way to rate the DLC so my overall score for the game decreases.

The bad guys were kind of like Handsome Jack with small changes. Is the funny psychopath really the only option to play the bad guy?

It was pretty much like playing a BL2 DLC and since there have been so many of those already, the BL2 style jokes and NPCs such as Claptrap and Tiny Tina started to annoy me pretty fast. Shooting bandits and the beasts of the desert should have been replaced with something new. The player classes felt like slightly altered versions of BL2 classes which made even the first play through pretty uninteresting. I chose Fl4k for my first play through and started with Maze after that, but there really isn't anything new to experience with different characters so there's not much point for NG+.

It was not all bad though. The gameplay is as good as in BL2, which is very good, but then again, I could always play BL2 if BL3 has nothing else to offer. The music in BL3 was very enjoyable as it almost always is with Jesper Kyd and there were many cool, small details here and there. I just wish they had created something new around the details.

Lets start with the gameplay: It is excellent. The 4 characters are really different and now you have 3 action skills to chose for each of them with available upgrades to equip (Zane can use even 2 action skills at once for the price of being unable to use grenades). Also each available tree gives a lot of variation for the characters. They added weapons with 2 switchable modes. This is awesome as you can switch elemental effects, shoot a tracker that made bullets auto target the attached enemy for a short time or have two weapons in one (Assault rifle to shotgun) to name just a few. This is atop all stuff you already had in previous gamed like the special manufacturer abilities. They also improved the loot drops. It is neither too rewarding or unrewarding and with all these abilities I like to test some set ups during the game. There are some drawbacks. Maliwan weapons are awful now (Were my favorites before). You have to charge them before they fire. I got used to it later on but avoided them as much as I could. Ice is now not damage over time but freezes enemies for triple melee damage it I remember correctly. However it generally surpasses Borderlands 2 in this regard and I consider it to be the best loot shooter game-play-wise. Lets go to the story. It was a mayor complaint by many that it is weak. First I disagreed but after the halfway of the game boredom became a problem. It started on Eden 6 and later Pandora but became really an annoyance on the next place I wont spoil which visiting should be the highlight of the franchise. There was a better set up for a great story in the (weaker) Presequel and I don't know why they used this with the additional set ups from Tales of Borderlands. It has not enough highlights and drags on too much. Then there are the villains. It is hard to be the follow up for Handsome Jack who is one of the best villains in videogames. The Calypso twins are sadly more the bad kind of annoying. Don't get me wrong as they have their moments that work really well. It is the choice to made them evil, sociopathic and ruthless Space-YouTubers that does not work for me and most fans. The side-quest are better and memorable. I liked the toilet prisoner, Loreleis missions, the uplifting and the ones by Vaughn / Tannis. They used great dark humor and you find many parodies in the game (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones etc.). The dark humor is also present in the main missions but not used well enough (Katagawa jr and Rhys for example work great). There is also the mayor complain about the character Ava. The annoyance is part of the set up for her character and I say it is a trope / stereotype. However there are is 1 part were I hated her and one part of the game were I say WTF? First is what happen to Maya and I fully blame her here (I be vague here because of huge spoilers). Secondly at the end she gets a position that baffles everyone. Why? She did nothing to earn it in the game and have not the experience and skills outside her newly acquired special ability. She is not even number 5 in line as there were Ellie, Tannis, Mordecai, the 4 new Vault Hunters and others better suited just as example. Without this I liked her character and have empathy for her. If handled better she could become a fan favorite and I blame the script / writing. The other characters are handle good enough for me but some are missing without explanation or just appearing in Echos (Maybe added in later DLC?). I also like the additional stuff you can find by exploring like the hunts, radio stations and Echos from Typhon DeLeon (Find all 3 on each map and maybe you get something good;-). Lets go to the technical stuff: There are some bugs like a quest marker not appearing (toilet side-quest) or an Echo from Typhon the Leon not counted as activated / found. The graphics look really good and I had nothing to complain. Soundtrack is the same. I like the art-style of the franchise and think it is a staple. Overall this is a good game but also disappointing. Great gameplay and multiplayer but the story and characters are weaker and many say it is the weakest of the franchise in this regard. I think I agree mostly with this statement. Expand

Borderlands 3 is, by no means, a bad game. It's alright. The most die-hard loot-shooter fans might even tell you it's a great game. It's basically Borderlands 2, but with some really minor changes - more akin to a DLC than what you'd expect in a sequel. It doesn't seem to try to compete with anyone, or show that the developers have made progress since the last game.

And that would normally be fine. We see games like that being released every year in form of EA's sports games and the Call of Duty franchise before they added Sledgehammer to their list of developers and turned it into a 3-year development cycle. However, Borderlands was developed over a period of ridiculous 7 years, and not a single year. The blatant lack of progress is absolutely amazing, but for the wrong reasons. I don't know how they managed to add so incredibly little in such a vast amount of time. That's about the average time of a console's life cycle, before the next generation of consoles roll out. It's about the same amount of time it took Rockstar to turn the original Red Dead Redemption into a vastly different, upgraded and far more expansive game in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's baffling what little work they've done in those 7 years. These inflated, "professional critics reviews" don't make any sense when you take all of this into account. I would have expected a game with such an underwhelming degree of progress over its predecessor to have been made in 2-3 years.

If you think the game is great, then that's fine, good for you. However, Borderlands 3 is, objectively speaking, an incredibly underdeveloped game that belongs far more fittingly in the PS3 era. And that's despite its generous 7 years in development. If you liked Borderlands 2 and you're not in a hurry to get this one, I recommend waiting until they put it on sale, because they're basically charging the price of a full game for a last-gen game that they likely didn't put much effort into producing.

It would be reasonably if the campaign was fun but it just isnt. The villains are incredibly cringy and the campaign feels like its made for 13 year olds. The most important part of the game are of course the weapons. Instead of having to farm for a specific weapon you now have to farm for specific augmentations on those weapons. There is no reward feeling at all because a perfect augment just doesnt create the feeling of finally getting the weapon itself. Lets not forget that even with one of the latest patches the designated lootpools dont work properly and youre mostly getting tons of other legendaries before the one that has an increased chance to drop. The bosses are not badass either. The Npc Vaughn is one of the most braindead characters ive ever seen in a game and i do not understand why he has to be in this game. Now the latest dlc had to make one of the main characters gay, because why not, all the gays in the world were screaming for hammerlock to be gay so this decision was totally understandable. Trying to get social acceptance just backfired really really quickly. With the vanilla game there wasnt even a raidboss meaning after the story the was nothing to do, NOTHING. I still think the game technically has room for improvement but since all of the publishers nowadays are preferring to release bad games and refuse to earn big money, i dont see major improvements coming. Btw i never thought that amongst individual ratings the score is lower than 6 with more than 1000 reviews, if that doesnt tell em i dont know what does... Expand

Humour is mostly very "Americanised", i.e. over-the-top 'THIS IS A JOKE' in-your-face lines. One example is a "joke" about a character's moustache is repeated at least 10 times in the main storyline alone, making the game seem desperate for a laugh.

The "villains" of this game are forgettable and boring compared to the amazing Handsome Jack of BL2. There are also currently no endgame raid bosses, just repetitive arena challenges that feel like a chore to complete, even in co-op.

All of this is on top of the massive amount of lag spikes / glitches / bugged PSN Trophies, which many others have discussed.

After 7 years without a proper sequel in the mainline series of games, two spin-offs and a whole lot of drama with Gearbox Studios, the 3rd installment in the mainline Borderlands games is here. Following in the footsteps of the previous two entries, this game tries to feel familiar while also trying to change up its formula just enough to make a game that feels right at home on current-gen consoles. Succeeding in some areas and fail in others.

The story picks up right where Borderlands 2 left off, the main cast of characters finds a map that leads to multiple vaults hidden throughout the galaxy. The map gets misplaced between the events of Borderlands 2 and 3 and ends up the hands of the Calypso Twins, the main antagonists of the game and the leaders of the cult group, Children of the Vault. Throughout the adventure you play as a new group of vault hunters, trying to take down the cult and stop the twins from getting to the vaults. The Borderlands stories have always had an extensive amount of lore behind them. This story is no different but there is one key element missing, comedy. Everything from the main characters to the villains in the main story are not that funny. Some of the best moment of writing come from the side missions, which had me laughing out loud at some points. The most disappointing part of all this is the Calypso Twins, who can’t hold a candle compared to the previous villain, Handsome Jack. Most of their humor consisting of them being “YouTube” stars. Most new character introduced in this new installment are pretty forgettable in compared to the mainstays of the series. Story-wise, this continuation of events that happened in this game are pretty disappointing to say the least, especially after a lackluster ending that sets up one of the new forgettable characters for a bigger role in the future and completely sidelining many characters that longtime fans would rather see.

As far as gameplay goes, it’s almost identical to Borderlands 2 and that’s not a bad thing. The first person shooting mechanics are as satisfying as ever. The 4 new vault hunters help add some more variety in the gameplay with unique abilities like summoning a pet or using a mech in battle. Skill trees are the most varied they have ever been in the series, with certain equipable abilities that you can unlock by getting further in the tree. A.I. enemies are pretty smart, hiding behind cover and using any maneuvers they can to kill you, making for a game that can be quite punishing in a good kind of way. This punishment does not go unrewarded as the game is throwing you new weapons left and right, keeping player incentivized to continue playing long after the credits roll. Gameplay-wise, this is the best in the series. Borderlands fans and newcomers alike will have hundreds of hours of fun to find here with more coming on the way thanks to free and paid expansions.

On the technical side of things, this game can be a buggy mess at times. Framerates coming down to a crawl when opening menus, players and A.I. getting stuck in walls or flying across the map. Very few are game-breaking but most will be annoying like restarting a mission because you’re not able to click the “talk” button to a character. These issues are still present 3 weeks after the launch of the title. Besides that, graphics and presentation look nice and detailed especially for its cell-shaded look. The soundtrack is pretty incredible, one of the highlights from the whole series. Technical problems bring this title down a bit but nothing that outright ruins the game.

Borderlands 3 can a fun and enjoyable time for fans of the series if they're looking for fun gameplay and don’t really care about story or lore. Despite a lackluster story and technical problems, there is still fun to be had. If you are new to the series, I would start elsewhere. Borderlands 2 might be a better starting point due to its great story and funnier moments. Borderlands 3 does not feel like a game 7 years in the making but it just passable enough to be a proper installment in the series.

    Pros:
    +Tight Gameplay
    +Gameplay Variety
    +Smart A.I. and Difficulty
    + Great Soundtrack

    Cons:
    -Lackluster Story and Villain’s
    -Technical Problems

That's just my experience with the game so far. I've beaten the campaign and solo'd a lot of stuff on Mayhem 3. I then looked online and a lot of people are confirming the same thing.

    Gameplay:

it's fast pace, hectic, all balls to the walls gunplay has you fully immersed into its insane, sprawling open world from start to finish. It's worth noting that I personally found the main story missions on the lengthy side which isn't a negative because I certainly got my 'bang-for-buck' but I'd prefer some of the missions to be broken down into sections or parts just so I don't have to keep ending my sessions mid-mission (< - this is a small gripe but something I needed to mention).

There are plenty of entertaining side missions to keep you laughing your head off whilst also feeling rewarded for your efforts, I think it's here where the game shines most, as the side missions make you feel integral to the objectives! - which leads me onto my next point...

Traversing the game was great when you had a vehicle & driving around is allot of fun especially when you start customising to your preference! & theirs always a 'Catch-a-ride' within walking distance should you need one.. although I'd love an option to have vehicles spawn to your location & more variety such as motorcycles & air vehicles!

    Story:

The story of Borderlands 3 is packed with fun and interesting characters which adds to the bonkers nature of the rich, detailed world you're playing in. Borderlands 3 had me laughing from beginning to end & is jam packed full of easter eggs & pop culture references! I think the overall point-by-point story was fun & written well enough, there were definitely a few forced character progressions that seemed to jump from zero to hero pretty much just like that! My issue is that you, the player seem to have no real impact on the story, the game uses pre-rendered cutscenes for some of it's main missions and they're really well written & animated cutscenes.. just.. you're never in them, things happen in these cutscenes that leave you scratching your head thinking "Why isn't my character doing something about this?" and as soon as you notice this, it sticks out like a sore thumb and makes you feel like you're on a rollercoaster ride as a bystander of the story rather than you having any impact in narrative. This for me was the biggest letdown & this is what overall has impacted my final score the most, however I'm sure many have & will look past this & you should because aide from this borderlands 3 is an excellent game!

    Graphics:

So on the technical side I want to say that this game is beautiful! the Borderlands franchise has always had a fresh, unique aesthetic which makes it stand out from the rest! I was playing this on a PS4 Pro & noticed that textures would take some time to fully load this was not too much of a deal beaker for me, however it did feel a little sloppy, this was especially noticeable after fast traveling o a location, where my map and quests would also take extra time to load & other times this was just random.

The word takes place on various planets & each planet is broken up into sections, this means that if you're constantly moving from place to place then you're hit with a loading screen.. I'm sure this is all down to technical limitation of current general hardware & something we can wave goodbye to when the next generation hits this holiday season! - but alas, I still had to mention it & it does pull you out of the experience somewhat!

    Moving Forward:
    Borderlands 4 needs to:

    1) Incorporate the player(s) into the main story & make you feel integral to the story, whilst also breaking main missions down into more bitesize pieces where appropriate!

    2) Transitioning from one map to another needs to be simultaneous, with no loading barriers.

    Verdict:

Borderlands 3 is allot of fun and it's easy to just focus on all the niggles and nit picks but when you brush that aside, you have a fun, bonkers & well made game to get lost in & just have fun!

I imagined that hearing about the post-game mode "mayhem" that it would be something like Diablo 3 adventure mode where it's just fight after fight, loot on top of loot. Nope, not at all. It's just the same game. Extremely annoying NPC chattering ON AND ON AND ON.

I was enjoying the leveling but now I have little to no desire to play. Tired of restarting my game just so a reload can fix these broken quests. This game has more bugs and busted abilities than I've ever seen in a shooter game.

What in the world is going at Gearbox, did they change writing staff, 'cause the story really sucks ass. Why is the focus placed heavily on Ava, and the way they seem to be killing off characters is amazing. I really love the improvements with fast travel, theguns (100% better than Anthem), and Im really love the way boss fights are sat up, however the story is way too short. Honestly, the game would have worked better as a 30 dollars expansion. Expand

The Borderlands games shine when it comes to co-op, allowing you and your friends to tool up with procedural generated weapons that can allow for some interesting gun play. Combat is refined, customisation allows a lot freedom and the challenge is there if you want it using the Mayhem modes.

That being said, this isn't enough to hold up the game. There is nothing strikingly new here, nothing pops out as innovative or allows it to stand out from the other entries. The story is exhausting and predictable and the player has no real impact with cut scenes feeling like an outer body experience, the characters that populate the worlds are far from interesting and often a parody. Bosses are forgettable. Areas of the game are stale. Pop culture references are scattered through out, sometimes very much cringe worthy.

If you want to mow down waves of enemies with your buddies in an end game for generated loot ultimately hitting your level and guardian rank caps then by all means this game is worth a go as a co op experience at max level but then what?

In addition in my first play through I experienced quite a lot of bugs which I would have expected to be patched by now considering the passed time since the release. However, this did not stop me from enjoying the game and all the things it threw at me, even playing solo was a blast and made me want to progress on the other characters as the randomised loot and enemy variations kept the game from feeling stale and repetitive.

An overall good game that I recommend anyone picks up who enjoyed BL2 or similar games like destiny or RPG-like titles.

But what takes a lot of the score in this review and makes me feel empty is the way it manages the story and some of its characters. First, the story is actually not bad, but is not the best. The reason relies on the different characters that are presented, some of them really loveable ones, and how little they are developed during the game, this could have been supplied with more secondary misions, leading to a mayor progression, mission diversity and more in game hours of content, that is translated in just plain Borderlands fun.

So in essence, the base game needs more optional missions, more character development and just plain Borderlands essences with more funny jokes, such as a classic like Face Mcshooty as an example.

I’m glad I waited to pick this game up for $20. At the end of the day, it’s more Borderlands, for better and for worse. My reason for giving a lackluster review really lies in the fact that the game is not optimized well for consoles, and Gearbox isn’t really doing anything about it.

What Borderlands 3 does, it does pretty well. It's slick, fast-paced and offers plenty of options for customisation (if that's your thing). I've played Borderlands 1 and 2 (and the Pre-sequel), and this is essentially Borderlands 2.1. One of my major feelings was of deja vu - I just felt that I had played the game already, with its repetitive loop of shooting, looting and upgrading basically unchanged since the first installment, with few meaningful updates. Maybe others enjoy this type of gameplay more, but I got tired of it quite quickly. The game also feels very dated - I was never a great fan of the cartoony graphics back in 2009 when the first game came out, but by now I just found them bland and boring-looking. Then there's the humour. Perhaps it's merely that I am now older, but the constant stream of very lame jokes now just seems cringey (when in the past it mainly just washed over me). Finally, the game was waaay too easy - for long periods, I never even bothered upgrading my weapons or using skill points, because it rarely felt necessary: enemies, including bosses, seemed to die with just a few blasts of whatever I happened to have equipped. If you've never played a Borderlands game, you may get more out of this than I did, but disappointed is the main word I would use to describe my experience. Expand

BL3 is a step back in almost every regard, the writing that BL2 set and Tales perfected has gone down the drain, and in its place is an incessant cringe humour that never seems to take a break, for every good joke, there's 10 bad ones. The standout good writing comes squarely in the form of older characters like Hammerlock and Lilith, almost everybody else is just painful.

Where BL2 had one of the best written antagonists in video game history, BL3 has Twitch Streamers who never seem to shut the f*ck up. Troy and Tyreen might be my most hated characters in this entire franchise, and I can't stand that little b*stard in the Pre-Sequel who calls his dad every time you go within a 5 mile radius of him on the Moon. They just make me groan with every line, they talk like 12 year olds imitating their favourite e-celebrity, though BL2 had immature humour, "butt stallion" comes to mind, what made it funny was the context. Handsome Jack is a billionaire psychopath who murders people for fun, and he calls you up and names a horse "butt stallion" just to mock you, it's funny, Troy saying "you eat butts" is not funny, it's stupid.

Last on my chopping block is Ava, oh this little cretin is just the worst. Ava is a character with which the sun revolves around according to this game, getting a beloved character killed, blaming Lilith for this for almost the entire game, and finally being entrusted with Sanctuary at the end of the game, without ever being told off or reprimanded for her bratty behaviour, she's a constant source of annoyance and she's only ever rewarded for it, it's infuriating.

With characters out of the way, lets talk about the Gameplay; it's good, it's fun, fast, chaotic and if you're on a PS4 Pro or PC, the game runs very smoothly, it's a fun game that sees your efforts constantly rewarded with great, unique guns and a very quick Level Up process, complete with a very diverse range of options for your Character Build, personally I'm about as skilled as a grape with hands glued to it, so I played The Operator and mainly focused on upgrading my damage resistance and my Drone and Clone abilities, which made me a very Tanky boy who almost never died, and even when I went into the Down State, my Drone or Clone would be able to kill an enemy and get me right back up.

Story wise, it's nothing special, Twitch Kids are doing evil sh*t so go stop 'em, and for the most part, it's a fairly enjoyable ride, until around the last third, which drags on and on and on AND ON AND ON. It never ends, there's even a part where you say goodbye to everybody and you fight the twins, and the game just sorta... keeps going, it's really poorly paced and ruins the last 15 hours with boring, fetch quest BS, it leaves a horribly sour taste after a fairly enjoyable game and ruins the entire experience. And that ending... oh god that ending...

Overall, BL3 while better than The Pre-Sequel, is worse than every other game in the series, the writing isn't there in quality or comedy, and not even the gameplay can save it from being a, annoying, irritating game filled to the brim with middle fingers to fans of the previous games, I never thought I'd wish for retcons, but oh boy I really hope some of this stuff gets retconned.

The story is also unpleasantly long and with the awful antagonists, I can only pray for those that have to endure the later vault hunter modes. The gunplay is clean with incredible sound designs, and the worlds themselves are stunning and unique, however, for the wait we had, it wasn't worth it.
Moreover, Mayhem mode doesn't feel like mayhem and has counter-intuitive logic to its gear.

Let's hope that after all the dlc is released along with its patches, that Borderlands 3 will live up to what it was meant to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly have mixed feelings about this. For me BL2 was one of my favorite games of all time. I became invested in the characters, lore, everything.

First the good. This game is in fact a superior game to BL2, the gunplay is more fluid, enemies actually rag doll, the addition of sliding and ledge climbing was great and made you feel more mobile. It has a number of quality of life changes too, like in general making money useful instead of useless, letting you teleport from anywhere and giving you tons more space in your pack and bank to store things. I loved all of that. The artistic direction and music is once again unrivaled. The Voice Acting for a majority of the cast was fantastic.

So why did I give it a 5? Honestly I was tempted to go even lower but stopped myself for want of being fair. Not only to the game but the people who put in so much time, passion and effort into whats here. The majority of developers did an incredible job and deserve so much recognition. They deserve their bonuses which Gearbox illegally decided to withhold from them.

A product is a sum of its parts, its only as strong as its weakest link. And the weakest link here is its story. The story was the most infuriating, insulting, insufferable, BORING, story for a game I think I've ever played. I seriously think I liked Turok 2008's story more.

Favorite characters including mine(Axton) from BL2 are no where to be found and not even mentioned. They don't do a good job explaining any event post BL2 for people like myself who have no interest in the "tales" series, so I was immediately confused and horrified to casually hear that Scooter died in the time gap. I was even more horrified when they killed of Maya for a cheap "well it worked with Roland" moment that was neither earned nor made sense. All the humor is something that a 12 year old boy might find funny which was in BL2 but here literally EVERYONE is more annoying than Claptrap, a character designed to be annoying. There are no straight men to even play off of as the rest of the fan favorites are maybe in 30 minutes of this 40 hour game.

The main villains? Listen I never expected them to top Jack. And to be honest, I liked the twins as a concept, I really did. Serine antagonists felt like a proper threat, but again the being more annoying than Claptrap while also being Merry/Gary Sues/Stues just ruin them. The entire meta commentary on "streamers" fell completely flat on their face while insulting us, gamers, as mindless cult members who blindly listen to what ever their favorite streamer says. My interest in this franchise is completely dead. Best parts of this game were its DLC packs which I can't even include in this review or else it might go up to a 6 or 7. The rest is just garbage writing.

Pick it up on sale if you want to play it for the gameplay and environments. Skip the story.
