The initial learning curve of understanding the combat can be a bit daunting, but then all of a sudden everything kind of clicks and you find yourself able to progress further and further into the game. It still may not be a game for everyone, but if you're even slightly curious you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Knocked it down from a 10 to a 9 due to the long load times. I have watched a lot of YouTube videos where it seems like it runs smoother, so maybe there is something going on on my end, but it's not a custom pc where hardware varies, it's a console, so I doubt it. Another issue a lot of people complain about is the loading times, and though they are long I really don't mind it too much, just more incentive to take it slow and not get killed. I want to give this game a 10 but the frame rate drop in environments where there are many enemies and smoke effects makes this game a 9 for me. Expand

Outsanding visuals, truely immersing gameplay, beautifully and complex designed world. I didn't played before in any Souls games, i knew Bloodborne will be something special, but i didn't thought it would be a masterpiece. Hats off, From Software.

A fast paced world that in all honesty doesn't take a lot of patience and skill to progress. Even the worst of players can eventually level up to get better gear to be more efficient. I played Demon's and Dark Souls back in the midst of the top FPS game wars for a change and realized I didn't have the patience to play those games. For lack of better words, they kicked my A** pretty bad. Fast forward to 2015 and here comes Bloodborne. I didn't realize it was from the same makers as Demon's and Dark Souls until the day the game came out. I was hesitant to play unsure if I'd even like it from my past experience with these types of games. Now I heard that this was more forgiving than its predecessors but does still hold a challenge. I put my first full weekend into the game and I will say I died a lot. I expected that but, I died a lot more than I thought I would. Like a lot a lot. I started hating it again but I took a break from it, took a breath and came back and died some more. Eventually I did what I read in every review, study. Study your enemy or they will kill you. After a full weekend and making a pretty good distance into the game I can't put it down. There is a sense of accomplishment when you finally get past that one part. I even had to look online for some hinters and I still died. Bottom line is, if you want a game where you'll die and feel good about coming out on top this is your game. This game has purpose and substance. Its not just some game you pop in and run through while on a cackle fest. Bring your A game. Oh yeah, it also helps that the scenery, characters, etc look gorgeous. Occasional frame rate issues and yes the horrible load times. Look at them as time to breath I almost feel it was intentional so you don't cry by dying as fast as much. I think I'll even pick up Dark Souls 2 when it comes out on PS4 with my new found appreciation for this genre. Expand

I forgot to mention in my earlier review about the insight system. If you use an insight, and can't connect to the server, disconnected by the server, or can't find help, the game uses this insight. Very punishing for a new player, and a game breaker.

Blood vials have to be farmed. Very boring, but necessary. From needs to rethink this, and replenish resources at the lanterns.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An exceptional game. A masterpiece. A genre king. A must-play argument to own a PlayStation 4. Bloodborne is all that, and more.

I was 2 hours into Bloodborne when the sense of adventure lead me into the Yharnam canals through a one-way. I was lost, not knowing the way back to the next lantern; of course there's always a fast way to enter the hunter's dream: By dying. But since dying means losing your precious Bloodechoes (which are basically gold and exp in one package) I was determined to cling to life as long as possible. Another 2 hours later, covered in blood and almost out of the canals I had increased my Bloodecho count to almost 4000 when I suddenly discovered bodies hanging from the canal ceilings, glowing with loot. The moment I chopped the second body I fell as well; surviving the ledge only just, my hands full of sweat I suddenly saw a pack of giant rats turning around and running towards me. Instinctively I backed off while healing myself, throwing Molotovs and transforming my axe into a halberd, wide swinging at the hungry beasts. I had developed some skills over the past 4 hours and they proved to be enough to also survive this encounter. Once the dust had settled, I began to collect the loot when I suddenly found my first new weapon. This moment alone contained a sensation of satisfaction most other entire games don't come close to. And I hadn't even seen the first boss yet.

Of course those moments of success are nothing new to people who are used to From Software's Souls games. What sets Bloodborne apart is the shift in gameplay mechanics that rewards offensive play and eliminates magic; it's a little bit like comparing the momentum of Gears of War to the momentum of Vanquish, with Bloodborne being a much more tense and emotional experience. There are no viable shield options in Bloodborne and your firearm is mainly for setting up ripostes or luring enemies away from their groups. In the middle of the fight however, it's all down to the question how good your evasion skills are and how much you know about your weapon's reach and speed. It's about how competent you are with following the rhythm of the battle and distinguishing the avoid notes, always looking for the target harmony of victory.

Reading your enemies' movements and predicting their attacks is the key to survival in Bloodborne, or at least to survive a little bit longer. Make no mistake: this is still very much a Souls-like game which means you'll die. A lot. It will be infuriating at times but Bloodborne is crafted so virtuoso that it's almost never the game that's to blame.

To mitigate some of the possible frustration, you should play Bloodborne online whenever possible. Sure, inviting friends to help with bosses will make the game easier; but what's more important are the hints and messages that every player can leave in the world. Those will often tell you about an enemy ambush that lies ahead, give you advice what the weakness of the following enemy is or tell you about a hidden item that you might miss otherwise.

Soon you will start to leave messages as well, probably to participate in the community and help other players. But you will also get help in return; messages can be rated good or bad and a good rating from another player will actually heal you. It might not sound like much but if you're in close quarter combat with Pater Gascoigne and a quick note pops up how another player found one of your messages helpful and thus healing you in the middle of a boss fight, you'll experience the most badass form of Karma in your gamer's life.

Ultimately, Bloodborne is more than just a mere test of skill, it's a test of character. It's not a game for people who like to blame the world for their mistakes or expecting their environment to compromise for their comfort. It rewards patience, curiosity, deductive reasoning and adaptability. It doesn't make you a worse person if you allow the game to break you, but bathing in its waves of bitter drubbing and sweet triumph may actually make a better person out of you.

This game is an epiphany, stylistically confident not only in its game mechanics but also with its Victorian environments and Lovecraftian creatures. It wants you to get lost in its game world, showing you the story instead of telling it. It doesn't restrain you and all it asks in return is that you don't expect it to be restrained. It deserves the critical acclaim and praise it's getting but more importantly it deserves your attention. Every bit of it.

This game rewards patience and learning and makes you pay for jumping into a fight without any thought (mostly). Blood viles and bullets are abundant in the game, the challenge is knowing when to use them.

Bloodborne proves to be a visually beautiful game. It draws from tall cathedrals, open fields, small town streets, and gothic backgrounds. These are beautiful, but sinister to look at. It takes from HP Lovecraft and Edger Allen Poe to bring out a terrifyingly beautiful world to explore and fear. The weapons at one's disposal have pros and cons, and like the enemies, require learning to understand what each does. The quick use of the hunter's ax, turns into a slow, but devastating blow at the touch of a button.

I love looking around for hidden outfits, upgrades, blood gems, everything. This is a great exclusive and demands time and patience. It is a difficult game, but feels extremely rewarding when your prey falls at your feet. This is a must have in every way.

However if you're up for a challenge and prepared to accept you will die and you will make mistakes and you will have to replay areas over and over being careful and taking time to take in the surroundings take time to watch enemies and their animations to learn their patterns then its a game for you. the story is hidden in lore there is no main story stringing you along, there is no hand holding - go here, kill this guy etc just dropped off in a hostile world left to survive. you get as much story as you search for, for many this is not what they are used to especially in the excellent AAA style of Naughty Dog.

For former souls players like myself there is still learning to be had, the absence of a shield is a steep learning curve for those of us who were to reliant on it but when you push past that you get a fast flowing melee mechanic and I've had far more success parrying with the gun than I ever had with the shield.

I'd encourage everybody to give Bloodborne a chance to show you its worth but I openly accept that its not accessible to everyone and many just will not 'get' it.

I knew it would be difficult, I have a friend who had been a big Souls players and he said that Bloodborne would be created by those same people. So I knew it would be difficult, but at the time I had no idea HOW difficult. This game is so different than anything I have ever played before, and that's saying something because video games have been a big part of my life for about twelve years now (I'm 18). Every enemy you come across, no matter the size or ease of killing, has the ability to kill you and send you back to your respawn lamp, something that took my by surprise when I rushed a large mob of them by a bonfire when I first started playing. At first, it was frustrating, I felt like the parrying system wasn't working, and no matter how much I dodged around I always got hit. I probably died fifteen times within the first two hours of playing, and that's a stretch.
However, once I got accustomed to the game and learned my way around the controller, the game became a challenge that I had dearly wanted for a long time. No game had ever kept me on my toes during the entire duration of gameplay. I don't mind the long distance between checkpoints, because there are shortcuts you can open up between you and the boss and other areas of a map, and that is what is intended for you to do before you take on the boss, so you can get back to it with relative ease. Each area holds something new and deadly, and I am both surprised and delighted at the expanse many of the maps have. Truly, the only reason I don't give this game a fll 10/10 is indeed because of the level of butthurt I do sometimes acquire while playing this game. But it's the good kind of butthurt (usually). This game is a gem, and should be purchased by anyone who is looking for a real challenge in their gaming time.

This game is best played if you have some time, if you can put in an hour here or there that helps. You will die...a lot...it may be your own fault more often than not, at least that's the case with me. If I get frustrated and try to hurry it usually ends with me dead. The bosses are difficult but not impossible, the loading screens are a bit lengthy but I use that time to think about why I died...and slow my heart rate. For some reason Bloodborne only seems to be reviewed by those who loved Demon Souls, so they are very biased from the start. My friend, a fan of the series, urged me to continue, and told me a thing or two, and I started a new character with fresh eyes backed by experience. What resulted was one of the most amazing and rewarding gaming experiences I've ever had. From then on, I was hooked. After playing Demon Souls and Dark Souls for over 400 combined hours, I was ready for Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls 2 for me was a bit of a let down, and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much, so I picked up Bloodborne:

Bloodborne is a breath of fresh air. A massive spike in difficulty compared to DS2, and new mechanics to learn. Fans of the series will feel right at home with the combat, with some interesting changes. Combat is obviously the focus of all the games, and the faster pace and unbelievable power your character has on attack make your ability to be killed immediately an interesting balance. The beauty of a souls game, is that no matter how strong you are, any enemy can kill you if you aren't paying attention, and this game is no different. When I am on in combat, the ass-kickery on screen is amazing, when I am off...I'm dead...

For me, this game is a 10+ and I can't wait to put more and more hours into it. The reason why I rated it a 9 is because of something another reviewer posted. Souls games come with a 'members only' feel to them, and if you aren't in the club, you won't enjoy the game. Having felt that way with Demon's Souls, I have the recipe for bringing people into the game. I currently have gotten 3 of my friends 'into the club' so to speak, and now we are all loving and playing Bloodborne.

The first thing for new players, is find an experienced player, a friend, someone line, or guides and learn about the game. There is no hand holding in the game what so ever, so consulting with people that understand the game will help tremendously.

Another, is don't be afraid to join a friends game to learn how to beat an area with 2 people, then go back with your own character. On that note, don't be afraid to summon people into your game too. It isn't cheating, it's part of the game.

Three, don't attack something unless it starts attacking you first. Many souls players have killed NPCs and people who help you upgrade without knowing they are helpful...sometimes even hitting them a few times will cause them to not help you anymore.

Four, if you are having trouble staying alive, do a little grinding, and upgrade your weapons and stats. Upgrading your weapon a few times at the bench will do wonders early game, so it is advisable to do this as early as possible.

Once you commit to the game, and you learn how to beat bosses and keep going, you will find that the death isn't as bad. The game requires patience, and this one is the hardest of all the souls games by my estimation, so those that are just starting will have a difficult time, and veterans are dying left and right as it is.

If you are only going to do one of these things, it's team up with a friend or resource online to learn about the ins and outs of one of the most deep and complex games on the market today. Sure it might be members only, but I got kicked out of the club once, and now I am one of the leading recruiters.

Other than that I have a few bits of advice for new players having difficulty 1) at the start when in Iosefka's clinic, (1st room you spawn in, it is normal to have no weapon)READ EVERYTHING! (grey messenges on the floor are a controls tutorial) This is NOT a game where ignorance of your surroundings will be rewarded in fact, it will be punished 2) Patience is essential. I cannot stress this point enough. You WILL die. I die. We ALL die. 3) Keen observation and analyzation of the enemies, their patterns, weaknesses and your surroundings is a must. 4) Don't be GREEDY! If you have enough blood echoes (currency) to level up, buy items etc. go back to the Hunter's Dream (central hub area, accessed by pressing X at any blue lantern with little guys coming out of the ground under it)and DO IT! 5) Run past enemies, dodge (press R3 to create a lock on enemies, when said lock is visible quick dodges may be performed by pressing O and the direction you need to go in{this takes stamina, green bar under red health bar}) if you have to. Once you start leveling up your character it gets much easier and more enjoyable! 6) READ! When in the menus, for example, by reading the bottom of the screen you will find that you may often be able to press the R3 button{right thumbstick pushed inward}this will create a highlighted cursor that when moved over menu symbols will give a description of their meaning/function. 7) This game has faith in you, it believes you have the intelligence, the will, to survive, to persevere, to overcome trying obstacles without someone telling you where to go and how to get there from start to finish, as do I. Good luck, I hope this helps you out, and, may the good blood guide your way. -Devin Expand

I found Bloodborne to be very addicting, especially when you make full use of the multiplayer features. There's no way to sugar coat the difficulty though, and even I had to put the game down for a couple days just to take a deep breath before going back to it. But, the things that draw you back in are the superior level design, morose artwork, and engaging gameplay.

Smart, beautiful, incredibly rich in detail and creativity - These guys take videogames to a new level. The combat is precise, fast, deep, complex, and very satisfying. World-, level- and enemy design is unseen so far.

Once you start playing all your controller features are always available - these devs respect you as a gamer. No QTEs, no fetch missions, no game over for killing an NPC. Stories are plenty and deep in this game - and very mature.

The new weapon transformation system is awesome, the regain mechanic makes the gameplay aggressive and very fast. Got hit by an enemy? Hit it back to get your HP back! This game feels good - and i have to admit that it makes other games feel lifeless and boring.

Exploration is key - levels are all mazes you conquer, opening shortcuts to get fast to a boss if you didn't beat on the first try.

A lot of non PS4 owners try to tell you this game doesn't help you, but you will find a full tutorial right at start which is always to your disposal. Don't let them fool you. You don't have to be a fan of previous titles to love it. It's simply awesome.

If you are not a hardcore gamer or a gamer who can play your average action RPG on a difficulty above easy you probably will hate yourself for putting a single dollar out for this game. But if you are a gamer looking for a true challenge with plenty of extreme action, fun replay value, great multiplayer and a unique twist on everything then this is a game you must own.

The world is atmospheric and organic, with locations seamlessly blending into one another; and the combat is faster and tighter, with greater variety afforded by dynamically transforming weapons. Powered by PS4, every aspect of the game seems nuanced when compared to previous Souls games, in many ways more streamlined and accessible. However my personal misgivings stem from the relative lack of equipment to discover in the open world, and drought of random enemy drops. There appears to be fewer weapons available than before - perhaps due to the versatility of each's transformations - so instead the tactic here is to become familiar with one or two favourites. Some say less is more, and may consider this a good thing, IMO without potential drops the game is missing one of my personal incentives to push ever onward or keep grinding an area.
If you're familiar with Dark Souls you know exactly what to expect here, I don't think refinements to combat and co-op qualify as revolutionary design. Shields may be out and firearms may be in, but you still riposte following a timed tap of the left trigger, and you can still be kept waiting for a response to your desperate pleas for assistance. From Software and riding high on an increased budget and the hopes and prayers of Sony, but I'm not convinced this is the game to save PS4, and I'm certain PS4 doesn't NEED saving anyway.

From Software seems to have reviewed and looked back on the older releases of the series and in my opinion has made a polished more exciting way of playing the games old mechanics with new twists that really change the way the game is played. The player and the enemies are made to move a lot faster mainly for the reason that this game contrary to the earlier releases of the series doesn't have almost any type of defensive combat tactics that are viable. The game encourages you to be constantly on your toes as there is no option to "armor up" your character, this alone also affects the atmosphere of the game not to mention the visuals and the soundtrack that enhances the experience. As one would expect from From Software studios they have an amazing people who design the world, map/areas, the lore and it all mixes into a one big living world that really makes you feel like you have left your living room to a beautiful world of blood and gore mixed with frustration and the satisfying feeling of clearing a boss fight that keeps you from sleeping at night.

As for the cons of the game that really do not affect my opinion on my game as i stated before, the online play (if played with high latency) affects the framerate of both sides of the online players. A few bugs i have heard of but not many in my playtrough. I personally would've wanted the game to be at the difficulty of a new game+ right from the beginning but i understand that it would make the game too overwhelming for people who are first time getting into the series .

Also this game altough at first might look like a simple at first, has a deep class and stat progression and level up system which is almost essential for a player to understand and study in order to progress in the game without going crazy. The game has hordes of enemies punishing your every mistake of leveling up wrong stats of your character to using wrong equipment or sword swings depending on the situation, the game wants you sit back for a while and think in hindsight what could i do differently to progress. If this makes you excited then i would definitely recommend this game for you. Also this game can be very provocative (mostly thought provoking) even if it is mostly a single player experience, and would recommend getting an insurance for your TV and controller if you're known to have anger management issues.

To start off: I own an Xbox One (Forza, Halo, GTA V), PS4 (Last of Us, Shadow Of Mordor) and Wii U (Bayonetta, Mario Kart, Smash, Super Mario World). Just that you get some sense of my platform independence and favourite games. Sort of mix of Action and Adventure, don't enjoy too much hassling about with detailed RPGs (just simply don't have the time to mess around with all that character building) although I love Elder Scrolls.

Back to Bloodborne. My PS4 is starved for games so I decided if it got a 9 I would buy it whatever and figure the world can't be wrong about this one. So I bought it, played it for 8 hours and ABSOLUTELY HATED it. I have sold my copy now, felt almost guilty about it. The last time I sold a game was Destiny. Another one of those overhyped and very disappointing titles.

I agree with the people who write here that it is simply too hard and painstakingly annoying to have to keep retracing your steps until you fully memorise how a scene plays out (i.e. simply memorise computer algorithms). Apparently there are people out there who like to do that but I don't know them in my direct community. I think Bloodborne must be a niche game so I am amazed that it is getting so much airtime and hype. And such a high score and some people saying GOTY. Unbelievable.

Also I think a very inconsistent treatment from the reviewers. Lack of story and not knowing what you are doing? Destiny did that too and got completely slagged off for it. And justly so! Endless grinding to kill a boss? Again Destiny lost top marks for this. And so it should. (In fact, Bloodborne offers endless grinding just to get to the boss, let alone the grinding it takes to kill it). If I was Bungie I would be scratching my (by now bald head) and thinking 'what the hell?'

If only From Software had been a bit more forgiving and allowed for an easy mode (which means normal in most games) with more save locations and less grinding, it would be a great game. Not a 9, but an 8.

This game is also overhyped on the graphics department. From an art point of view, it is very pleasing. I love the Victorian setting and grim atmosphere. I would say it almost reached the Nintendo level of art design in games. But from a technical point of view it is very disappointing: there is very little 'life' in the game. Why not have bats flying around or other things that make you feel this is a 'living dead' environment? Also, the game moves very jerkingly and the frame rate suffers badly. This should be the selling point of the PS4 so I think it is even more of an embarrassment that it does not deliver on this point. It also makes the characters animations choppy - both your own and that of the players. Any who has played Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U will understand how important it is to have 60 frames per second. It may be 720p but it shoots Bloodborne right out of the water.

The character is also sometimes unresponsive and punches or slashes in the wrong direction of what you intend to do. And in a game so relentless as Bloodborne that 'mistake' usually means death. And starting all over again.

I would say: avoid this game unless you really love an abnormal challenge or are simply a real fan of the Dark Souls games. This is not a 9, it is a 5. This is not GOTY, this is Sony's marketing doing it's job very well. This is not a reason to buy the PS4, this is yet another failure of an exclusive game (after Little Big Planet 3 and The Order: 1886). Luckily, some good mutiplats are coming soon. But if you own an XBOX One only, no need to feel that you are missing out this year ont the PS4. And if you only own a PS4, I think you might be regretting choosing a slightly better technical quality over quality content. And for everyone: pick a Wii U - that really is without a doubt one of the most overlooked machines with best games ever.

The concept of building your character is basically meaningless because of low soft caps and minimal stat requirements on basically all weapons.

Speaking of weapons, most are completely outclassed by three or four of their counterparts. You don't *really* have a choice if you are a min/max player. You can pretty much have all the DPS stats soft-capped without missing out on anything so there isn't really any incentive not to. The "spell" items are borderline useless. Damage is thoroughly medicore compared to melee weapons. Ranged weapons aren't good for much other than parrying (which is stupid easy compared to Souls) and pulling loose mobs off packs to make the fight easier. Armor makes a little bit of a difference but there are still fairly clear frontrunners that will defend against the types of damage most commonly encountered in PVP. Finally, your choice of runes is similarly hardly a choice because there are only maybe five viable endgame options anyway.

Unless the PVP level meta is 80 or lower it just won't be interesting in the long run because everyone will pretty much be identical other than

Wiping on a boss over and over again is not bad, making progress like that is fun! Going and grinding a level or two, I can get down with that, I love classic RPG's like that!

    But...

Repeating the same thing over and over again when you die? running back far away to the next destination where you've already died 10 times! And killing the same thing over and over again and then having no potions or 'money' to buy anything to help you once you get to the destination? Those are my gripes and they are not fun!

The game shouldn't be 50 hours because you're repeating the same thing for 40 hours, it should be 50 hours because the game actually has true RPG depth, like story telling, character progression, side stories. Bloodborne has so many awesome things done right in an action/adventure RPG but it is vastly hindered by repetition and forced one way game play...

If there actually was a save feature this game would be 10 hours, if that. How is that good? These 'Souls' games have SO much potential but it's drowned out by a poor definition of what 'Challenging' means.

From the outset you should be aware that Bloodborne first and foremost takes the template from before and puts it into a new 'set of clothes' as it were, whilst twisting it, and inventing some ingenious new rules.

Presentation is a little bit of a mixed-bag; the issues that plagued the previous games (wierd ragdoll physics and a slightly iffy framerate at times), coupled with slightly long loading times, and a need to drop the player into the game without a proper explanation of the mechanics, can turn potential newcomers off. And for a moment there at the beginning, you may just wonder if this is what the power of the PS4 is all about?

Okay, that's the bad points out of the way - now lets focus on the good!!

The world you are in is MASSIVE, and is clearly the star of the show!! It is by far the biggest world in any of these games, and there is so much to discover that it becomes the biggest antagonist of the game by far. Its a beautifully created world, so staggering in its detail and devastating art, that you forgive the loading times and the framerate, because its clearly apparent that the power of the PS4 has been used not for dynamic gimmicks or 'showboating', but genuinely for the purpose of realising a vision, and not compromising. Coupled with enemies that are equally as well thought-out, you

The music is beautiful, and the sound effects are breathtaking, not only in how they relate to the atmosphere (and in ways you'd never expect - I'll never turn my back on a rat EVER AGAIN!!), but they telegraph events to you, providing a dimension that I've mentioned before, and no doubt has been criminally overlooked - the fact that the sound provides the extra dimension, as it were.

The gameplay on the surface has been overhauled too, and the combat is different in its implementation, but has a satisfaction all of its own. The game also harbours a depth that was last seen in Demon's Souls, that like an iceberg is much more under the surface than you'd think. Its gripping in the ways of an action game, yet the strategies and the adventure/role play elements infect enough to provoke dare I say it - an addiction to the game? Certainly!!

Bloodborne should not be approached if you think that you're going to be washed in the latest greatest technical masterpiece to be lauded-over, it is not that game. What it is however is a game that if you let it, will grip you from the very beginning, and will probably never leave you.

For the count, I say give it a chance at the very least, it deserves that. If you missed Demon's Souls (and many did), give it a chance, it will suprize you.

People talk about satisfaction with this game, once you are able to master it...but satisfaction at what? Keeping a character with no plot and no back story alive? Satisfaction at killing a boss after 20 attempts, without even knowing who the boss is, why is he is here, or why it is important that you kill him? That stuff isn't satisfaction to me, it is grinding.

I would not easily recommend this game to my friends or casual gamers. You REALLY have to have the right kind of patience and persistence to truly enjoy it. You have to be willing to die, a lot. You have to be wiling to replay various areas, and kill the same enemies over and over again. IF you can understand how this game works, then you will eventually get better and you will find it enjoyable. Pay no attention to the individuals saying 'get gud or go home', ANYONE CAN PLAY THIS GAME - it's simply a matter of if you have the capacity to learn and adapt.

Memorise enemy attack patterns. Play cautiously but not to cautiously-it's quite simple. In all honesty those who complain about it being inaccessible or too difficult have only themselves to blame. I have never played a Souls game (I hear there good though) yet I'm enjoying my time Yharnham hugely. As I said, a bit of effort and this game is incredibly rewarding. A must buy for action RPG fans. The devs said they're working on a patch, but especially for AAA exclusives, these things needs to be ironed out before release. Thats one the reasons I've lowered my score to 8. The other is the load times. But thats pretty much it. Overall, I'm like the game a lot.

BTW, there are a lot of "0" scores, don't trust them. Simply click on their name and see their other reviews. You can see them giving other PS4 exclusives "0"s too, but giving all XBO or WiiU games "10"s. Its obvious whose bring this whole negative campaign.

Of course there's magic in the game. Those saying there isn't just haven't played long enough before writing a "review" . They go in with their mind made up in advance and set themselves up for disappointment when reality isn't identical to their imagination.
Play the game , then write a review. And yes , you know who you are , you stand out like a sore thumb.

This game is great. To be honest it frustrated me for the first set of hours (10). After that things started to make sense and click and then just before I beat the first boss I got it. I understood what the game was about and how to actually play. It's fun, I'm lost in the world and I have only beaten 2 bosses. It's challenging but fun.

First of all, I've played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Both with platinum trophies. Just to make clear that I am a fan of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (yes, I am leaving out DS2 on purpose) and had an opinion before going in this game.

The game is hard. It is like the first 2 Souls games on the PS3. Just a tiny bit harder in my opinion. I don't know if it has anything to do with the lack of a shield, or just the enemies. I am glad they simplyfied the STATS. I thought Demon's Souls had the best set of STATS compared to the Dark Souls games. The STAT list became too big. Now with Bloodborne the STAT list is nice and compact. Not very difficult and the R3 button for INFO on the STATS. What they do and upgrade. The look of the game is something different from the Souls serie. Where I loved the Demon's Souls look, with the brownish/dark colors, Dark Souls was a bit too colorful and bright for my liking. I am glad that Bloodborne brought back the dark look. No more green fields of grass with tomb stones like Dark Souls had. No crystal cave with all the light and bright colors. Just this dark color pallette. Love it. It just breaths atmosphere. The soundtrack also adds a lot to this atmosphere. Fits perfectly.
What I also love, is that they brought back the hub/nexus play style. Like we had in Demon's Souls. 1 central hub/nexus where you can spawn to any lantarn you've activated. It gives you a better overview of the world and makes it easier to remember where what is. In Dark Souls I was constantly lost or spawning at the wrong place. Just to buy something. No more in Bloodborne! 1 central place where you can level, fortify and upgrade your weapons, store items, buy or sell stuff. Makes it a lot more practical compared to Dark Souls where I felt it was a bit spread out.
1 issue that I have, there are some framedrops noticable in Old Yharnam. Don't know if this will occure anywhere else. Think it has to do with the drawdistance and the amount of floors/enemies. It is only at the beginning of the spawnpoint. So no biggy when you are on the move and making your first kill from this spawnpoint. It's just because you respawn several times (Yes, you WILL die) you will notice this over and over and over. Which brings me to the next point: loading after death. I am no programmer, but why is it taking soooo long? You would think that with an 8GB RAM system, the game could keep things like the enviroment in it's memory and just reset boxes/crates/enemies to their original spawnpoint? I dunno. I am no expert but I think it is ridiculous to wait almost a full minute to respawn after you are dead.

NEWCOMMERS: It looks very good, not great. But breaths atmosphere. Framerate is smooth, except for 1 instance I noticed. Music is superb. Difficulty is HARD. Very hard. Don't go jumping in this, thinking this is God of War. No. This is in every sense, a Souls game. You die? Great! You lose EVERY SINGLE Blood Echoes (currency to buy anything and to level up). You can recollect them at the point where you died. 1 problem; while you respawned, so did every enemy that is not a boss. This can be frustrating, but it is NOT unfair. You die most of the times by not thinking, going in underpowered, or just rushing, thinking you can get past enemies and get yourself caught in an ambush.
    - Just use your head.
    - Watch the enemy.
    - Take your time.
    - Use your Blood Echoes in the hub at every oportunity possible. Even consider backtracking to a lantarn just to USE your Blood Echoes so you can't lose them.

Do this and you will get through this game. Yes it is hard, but you will scream out loud when you finally beat that f-ing monster and no other game gives you that feeling of accomplishment. It feels so rewarding.

SOULS PLAYERS: Just an instant buy. Don't think. Just buy.

Co-op is a blast, and downing those bosses you're having the most trouble with alongside your friends would be some of the most fun experiences you'll have in quite some time... if you can get it to work. Perhaps there was something wrong on my end, but my friend and I set up passwords to play some co-op together and we sat in the same spot for hours and we were never placed together. We switched from Local to Worlwide, we switched back from Worldwide to Local, we changed our matching passwords multiple times, we both leveled to the exact same level, we restarted the game and tried again... and nothing. Eventually, he found someone else and beat the boss with them instead. It was quite disappointing.

As far as gameplay goes, the mechanics are quite innovative. If enemies didn't have so many attacks capable of hitting you near-instantly with too short of an attack animation to react, I daresay it might even be the perfect high-risk high-reward system. As things stand, it's basically just high-risk, and said risk rarely pays off, especially in higher-level areas. Along with this, most enemies, bosses included, feel fairly cheap and unrewarding to kill. The few satisfying encounters you do have, however, do a great job of driving you on to finish the game to see what else it might hold. The guns in this game are very interesting to use, but not much more than just that - interesting. They don't do very much damage at all, though for good reason. For gameplay purposes, every gun you get basically just shoots bean bag rounds. Having to pull off a charge attack to get a backstab is a VEEERY welcome tweak from the Souls games.

Overall, this is a solid title worth picking up, though you may want to wait for the price to lower. It's extremely frustrating and consistently wastes your time with pointless deaths and much too infrequent checkpoints, but the atmosphere, gameplay, and character customization are all quite fun and addicting.

This game is massive, it's got a lot of going on, my biggest complaint about Dark Souls 1 was that it was too open, and I found myself getting lost because I kept getting sidetracked. This one is more narrowly focused and you can skip around a bit. I beat boss 5 4th by accident, and I can beat one that gives twice as many rewards already before beating the 4th boss, but I don't want to do that because prices go up.

This game may not be perfect, but it's harder to give it lower than a 10. Why? Because at some point the imperfections are as much of the experience as the perfections. With the Chalice Dungeons there's lots of reward and co-op opprotunities, you can password protect your co-op games... If I was a professional reviewer maybe I'd give the game a 9.0 but that's only because the Forest and the load times are getting patched, and also to make room for the possibility of a sequel to possibly improve on the format.

Played Dark Souls 1&2 on PC and enjoyed both! I was so looking forward to Bloodborne! I Didn't pre-order however, I've kerbed that habbit!

So I've read all the rave reviews from all the major gaming sites etc etc. And thinking I've done right by my research i.e. If you love the souls series you'll adore Bloodborne! So I decided to go and make the purchase!

And Boy! Do I regret IT!

Having played and completed both DS 1 & 2! I wasnt going into this blind, I was up for a new challenge, in an entirely different setting, I was up for the game being difficult! Joypad smashingly so! I was looking forward to reaping the rewards of those trial and error traps, enemy engagements & boss fights. I was looking forward to learning from my mistakes, and sitting back with a huge grin on my face, when I'd finally progressed through the pain of the entire learning process!

    So what went wrong!?

Are the graphics not great? Sure there brilliant!

Are the combat mechanics, not tight! Nope, there just as great as DS 1 & 2!

Is the level design poor! Nope! There's plenty to discover, little nooks & crannys! you name it! It's all there!

    So what did go wrong!

    IMHO!

Terrible, terrible design decisions! In DS bonfires were used as check points, and although their was a certain amount of step retracing to recover your lost souls and progression. Their were very few occasions were it felt unfairly spaced out, distance wise! Often only taking a few minutes to get back to where you met your untimely demise & carry on the fight.

Bloodborne uses a similar checkpoint method, and instead of bonfires, you now have lamps! These are used to access and travel to and from the safe hub area Hunters Dream! Where you can upgrade your character and purchase consumables etc etc. Think Majula of DS 2 for those with previous knowledge!

Unfortunately, Bloodborne's first lamp positions are absolutely, unforgivingly, ludicrously positioned! Don't forget this game encourages exploration, and provides no mission pointers on your hud, no maps of the area at least not that I've encountered in the game so far.

Yet it took me 5 hours to reach the first lamp from Central Yharnam (yeah the one across the bridge from the werewolves!) Hell I was traversing sewers, finding secret pathways and shortcuts to areas in the games starting area, but no goddam lamp! I was literally going round in circles! All the time dieing on many many occasions as I discovered new enemies & traps to deal with etc etc. And all the while after dying several times, being constantly returned to the Central Yharnam lamp! Then having to traverse the exact same terrain, fighting the exact same enemies, over and over again. Just! To make some slight progresssion over my last run, only to die again! Then I'd have to rinse and repeat!

7 hours in! And finally reached the first boss! and a nifty shortcut to reach him after being killed by the Cleric beast around 20+ times! Here in lies the problem for me with Bloodborne! It was everything I expected from developers Fromsoft! Only this time! I began to view the game from a different perspective! That of a non prior DS player! A complete newbie if you will! And then it hit me! This game is so frustratingly unapproachable for a casual player, that it isnt even funny! I'm 3 bosses in currently and honestly! Even I've had enough! I dont want to continue! The games is so frustrating, confusing, ambigious, repetitive! I keep reading all these positive reviews "If you like DS You'll love this!" etc, etc! What if I was a new player? With no prior experience of the DS series whatsoever! Am I supposed to accept, that you made a game that just isnt for me! Fair enough I'm sure many people could accept that!

As developers though! Shouldnt you accept!? That you made a game so incredibly, frustratingly, unapproachable! That has such a punishing obtuse & unforgiving, learning curve, that youre inadvertantly going to just disway many a player, from even wanting to play your future games!

To me the difficulty in this game is a step to far! Not as a result of the gameplay, the game plays really well. The game mechanics however! The constant repetitive nature, the rinse and repeat, die until master approach, just makes the game feel! For lack of a better word CHEAP!

Personaly as a DS fan, this is just too much! And not to mention the other small nuisances i.e. frame rate drops, clip hits through walls, reallllllllly long load times! I' mean seriously I downloded the nearly 30gb to my HD! Whats with the 3 min load times ppl! Yeah this game aint for casual for sure, I'm not sure its for new players either!

If you haven't played the DS series prior! And dont want to be frustrated, by extreme difficulty through poor game mechanics! I'd wait for this to drop in sale or something! Before taking the dip! I really think the developers missed a genuine opportunity with this game! Oh well! Maybe next time! The hardcore DS'ers though, will probably LOVE IT!

While this may make for a faster experience in battle, it also makes for a much more limited one. I can't see the PVP surviving in this game given that every battle is essentially the same with two players just dodging and swinging with no real varietybeyond that.

The positives however are that the game is absolutely beautiful, with responsive controls and it provides a great challenge. I imagine the lore is just as interesting, if not more so, than that of Dark Souls but that will take time to unravel and piece together.

This isn't a bad game by any means, just not what a Souls successor should be as it seems to be taking one step forward and two steps back when it comes to variety which ultimately effects gameplay.

But in Bloodborne (and Souls series), most enemies are slow and a little bit weak (except the boss), but you're even slower and weaker, so the basic idea is totally different: extremely hard, frustrating, and slow-paced fight, a little bit like a round games.

Why do I say it's like round games? Because for the most of time, enemy attacks, you dodge, and fight back, and dodge again, enemy attacks again, you attack again, enemy down. That's it. Doesn't it sounds like round games?

However, I just can't stop playing it, comparing to the achievement of beating a hard boss, frustrating progress isn't that bad.

    I'd give a 9.

Master your fear, let your muscle memory kick in and learn from others. Watch videos for tips and tricks. Half the time you can run by an extremely tough foe and take a shortcut. Heck my game got much better once I figured out how to jump in this game. Level up explore the world around you. There is no need to rush into a boss fight. And know when to cash in your blood echoes and not push your luck. You have to play the game long enough to unlock the doll who sells you upgrades to your stats. They nail risk vs reward in this game. Once you figure out what you're doing wrong you'll roll over the enemies that used to bully you. I absolutely love this game. It reminds me of the old days of console gaming where you have to work to figure out the puzzle. The action is brutally quick like Ninja Gaiden Black. But once you get good like learning how to roll properly in NAM 1975 (neo-geo days) you don't die all that often and you feel god like. Remember 1st playing Castlevania on NES? Or Ninja Spirit on Turbo Graphx 16? Revenge of the Shinobi on Sega Genenis? Bloodborne is creating a new memory for me I'll never forget. Expand

Then some people complaining about how HARD it is, because all those groups are in the same one, the ones who couldn't make it passed the first 30 minutes. Listen up folks this is how to separate the winners from the losers. If you play games on easy, and 'for the story', go buy Order 1886. It is made for you.

This is a game for GAMERS and not people like me - someone who is a casual gamer. The environment is simply astounding, from the sound effects to the lighting and the built out environments, it really creates something special. This is a game you need 5.1 surround sound for - so you can listen to where your enemies are if you are unable to see them.

At first glance this is an unforgiving game, but once you figure out how to dodge, attack and read your enemies - you can start to get a rhythm going. Don't be sad when you die - it is an opportunity for you to go back and figure out how best to attack the enemy(s) who just killed you. I really like that there is pretty much zero guidance on where to go or what to do, you have to take every blind corner with caution and actually THINK about what to do not just blindly shoot or flail around.

The only negatives I found were when in online mode I would experience noticeable lag or frame rate drops (I have 100mbps download). Even in offline mode I experience random frame rate dips that really impacted the fluidity of the game. The loading times are a bit long as well, but not as bad as others make it out to be.

This is truly a great game and worthy of anyone's collection, but it is really for someone who can devote hours on end playing it and who don't have a lot of time constraints. For me I play games only 1-2 hours a day, and unfortunately it isn't the right game for me - despite how much I loved it.

This is due to the requirement that when a player dies, he must return to a previous point and kill the same respawned enemies all over again. As this game is populated with mini bosses - for the want of a better description - who are mostly overpowered compared to the player, the repetition of the play is downright tedious.
I am all for a challenging game, but I prefer challenges to be in the form of puzzles, rather than the dumbed down versions achieved by having grossly overpowered enemies at every turn. Throw in the consequence of having to go back and do it all over again if one of them happens to kill you and you have a game that gets old very quickly.
If it's too hard, perhaps co-op with a friend might ease the anxiety you think, but the co-op in this game is so obscure - like the story - you could be forgiven for thinking that there isn't any. Even then, you need to advance into the game quite a bit before co-op is possible, presuming you can discover how it works.
For a game with such splendid graphics, it is really a shame that it is too repetitive and at times difficult, to be considered fun.

This game uses death to punish you - I even think the long loading times are intentional for this purpose. Bloodborne encourages an aggressive playstyle and forces you to pick up on the game quickly. The checkpoints are really distant from each other and very often you'll be bombarded with hoards of enemies, some armed with guns. If you're familiar with the Souls' series you most likely already know what you're getting yourself into. For newcomers, if you lack patience and difficult games this isn't for you.

I mean it's a gorgeous game, don't get me wrong, but the problem is that it is just plain inaccessible to ANYONE other than hardcore fans of the genre. To put it simply, this is a game made BY Dark Souls fans FOR Dark Souls fans (as a lot of the positive reviews can attest to). In some ways there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but in other ways it just feels like it's like a 'members only' type of game, where only fans of the previous 'Souls' titles need apply. In my opinion, games should be accessible to EVERYONE, no matter what genre floats your proverbial boat. And if you want to venture into uncharted territory so to speak, you should be able to do so without an unrelenting feeling of dread.....simple because a game chooses to only cater to certain fans instead of the general gaming populace. I understand that some games want you to keep plugging away, figuring out strategies and getting better as time goes along, but there comes a time where, after dying for what seems like a million times, enough is enough. Call me a whimp all you want to, but I have VERY little patience for games that have such a steep learning curve as this one has. All you Dark Souls fans, help yourself......as for me I'll try to find a decent game somewhere out in the desolate wasteland that is the gaming industry.

Let me start by saying I am a major fan of the Souls series, played the first and loved it, played the second and loved it even more. So, as you can guess, I was seriously excited for Bloodborne and followed it all the way up to release, eagerly awaiting the time I could get my hands on it.

I started it, and was enjoying myself. I found it real hard which was great, I didn't want or expect it to be easy. But then a small issue appeared and pretty much turned the game into an awful experience. Health. So, the system is, buy or find health - which works fine until you're pitted against one of the bosses. I had around 16 healths at my disposal going into the boss fight and - obviously - used them all up fighting and died in the process. Okay, no problem, I thought. Boss isn't too far away, I don't mind fighting him again.

However. I then realised the only way I can get back health is to farm blood to buy them, or farm enemies to collect them. Hm. That isn't really fun. Bare in mind I was used to farming (to a certain degree) in dark souls, but this is on another level. This also applies to bullets, which are pretty much key to boss fights in order to counter them.

Honestly, am I expected to go out and repeatedly kill enemies in the same areas I've already been in just so I can get enough blood to be able to afford some health so I then can go and fight a boss and use up all my health, probably die, and then have to do it all over again? Again, I'm used to this kind of thing - dark souls 2 was relatively brutal. But it had the estus flask that refilled every time you sat at a bonfire. This worked, as the game itself was brutally hard - health was always close by and you needn't worry about having to farm to get some. This balanced perfectly.

I'm struggling to understand why no one has complained about this, it's a major negative in my eyes and essentially forces you to farm to even be able to have health. This is quite honestly the ONLY negative I can think of - everything else is wonderful. BUT, for me, it's such a big negative that it makes the game horribly repetitive. And again, I was on NG+6 on dark souls 2 and was still loving it, despite the repeptivie nature. But this is a different kind of repeptivieness, one i cannot have fun with.

I don't want to stop playing this game, because I AM having fun and want to explore more and fight more bosses. BUT, I simply can't stand farming for half hour in a place I've been in for ages just so I can scrape together enough blood to be able to afford some health. That just really isn't fun. If this was different, for example, an estus flask kind of system, then I would play for hours and adore it.

But it's not, I can't possibly tolerate the farming just so i can progress. Serious shame.
