Ubisoft's games are just graphic blenders and pointless occupational therapy that can only be bypassed for an extra charge.

This shows Ubisoft's philosophy. Ubisoft bullies single players with pointless and ridiculous tasks to force them to spend money to skip this crappy time-wasting grind.

The presentation may be ready for a film, but AC Vahalla is a pure waste of time in terms of play. Like every Ubisoft game in recent years.

The Metascore also proves once again how uncritical the "professional" media are and vote highly for every AAA game. Together with the army of (10er) fake reviews, who deliberately conceal all undesirable developments and the whole pointless time-consuming grind gameplay, it is clear that the voting is being manipulated here.

I'm done with Ubisoft after this disaster. Three disappointments in a row are enough. I love the Viking setting, but Ubisoft is destroying the entire gaming experience with the repetitive gameplay. After a few hours you realize that you are always doing the same thing. The mass battles, for example, always follow the same pattern. At some point you just run through ...

AC is dead. Buried by senseless open world gigantism, miserable quest design and completely repetitive gameplay.

Basically, it is Odyssey with other landscacpe. Story forgettable, combat spongy, silly side quests, embarrassing dialogues.

I don't know what is wrong with Ubisoft but obviously their Copy-Paste-System of game developing works for them. Unfotunately.

Going away from stealth is another thing which annoyed me a lot considering you still need to do stealth for trophy ,they should have kept Eagle abilities ( Ravan in this case) . There are also bugs even tho I waited on purpose all this time for UBISOFT to fix some of them and yet still in middle of mission sometimes I will have my character just fly up in the sky for no good reason forcing me to reload and do whatever I was doing again.
I always play AC games for Platinum trophy and as long as they are normally I enjoy them ,this game is just a pain in my ass and story is fairly predictable.
*If you are hunting platinum trophy there is a nice surprise for you when you get to certain mystery towards the end of the game called Saint Faith which was supposed to be fixed and yet still preventing people from getting Platinum trophy.
And just to clarify this game is FAR from Garbage as some people call it but it's nothing special either.

Well, first of, I had my first major bug early on the game, where I wasnt able to complete a story mission because the quest wouldnt trigger. Found out i was because of the day one patch (1.02) - this had me deleting the entire game and reinstalling. - hopefully this will be fixed so new players wont have to go through the same.

As for the game it self, is nice to look at, beautiful settings, but it just feels unfinished, so many little glitches making the game feel "robotic" and not smooth - i feel like its too easy to make wrong jumps during free run and overall the freerunning just dont feel that smooth, but this is not exclusive to Valhalla Ive felt this way for almost every Assassin's creed game.

The game is very disappointing in comparison to Odyssey and I like it even slightly less than Origins. The game has loaded me into an infinite sequence of my character falling thru the map, but luckily that went away after a few days before the new year. I find the leveling up more grindy than Odyssey. I would love to level up enough to unlock no fall damage, am level 45, going for 280. Fantastic

    Messy.

Valhalla is fun and entertaining but only on a surface level. It’s far too bloated and long winded considering the lack of depth to characters and story arcs. The biggest blunder by far is the combat.... this is the simplest most unimaginative button mash combat system I’ve seen in a long time. And it’s only more embarrassing and laughable coming off the back of ghost of Tsushimas

They’ve fluffed the maps and quests and completely diluted the skill set, the apparel, weapons and runes etc... it all feels completely redundant to the point I was purposely fighting bare fisted and nude just to make it interesting. Might sound like a joke, but it was genuinely the only way to make combat any form of challenge.

You can sink hours away in a Viking land, but you will walk away feeling pretty empty handed. For a much better experience in the same environment, I would recommend god of war.

The story is the best part of this game, definitely better than Origins' and Odyssey's, it is nothing awesome, but it's a good and solid story, especially the ending. However, the characters are very uninteresting, bland and not a little charismatic, what makes them pretty much forgettable. Also, all the characters in this game, viking, english or from anywhere else, can speak the same language and understand each other, what totally breaks the immersion of the game. The graphics are good in current gen, nothing to complain. The soundtrack is good too, the only thing i didn't like is that there's no soundtrack in the custcenes, just the character's voices. The minigames are cool as well. Now, let's talk about what i didn't like at all in this game. The combat has many, many problems. When you attack an enemy, sometimes the enemy doesn't feel your punchs and just take damage and attack you in the middle of your combo. Also, some enemies attacks have a strange red effect like they had superpowers in a game that tries to be realistic. The enemy AI is pretty dumb too, the archers are simply blind and the enemies are very predictable. But the main problem is that the game is extremely easy. I played this in the highest difficulty and, even so, the combat was so easy that the stealth became useless. The missions in the game are overwhelming boring and repetitive. Making alliances is the most boring, tedious and dull thing in the world. Every quest you have to kill a bunch of guys, do annoying and generic stuff for someone that you don't care about only to bring this dude to your side, and that lasts for hours and hours. The sidequest are very **** too but at least they're short. But seems like Ubisoft made the game how it is on purpose, because the game is infested with microtransactions that accelerate your progress in the game, it's really disgusting to see a 70$ Single Player Game having microtransactions, so imagine having a bunch of it, just like the previous ones, what a greedy and disgusting company. Really, that's the last time i'm buying an Assassin's Creed game, i'm done of playing 60 hours of an average 70$ game that begs me to pay even more to have a "good experience". Expand

The combat is different, not better than Origins or Odyssey, but they tried something different. The loot system is improved, making each piece of gear unique, instead of showering you with a multitude of useless loot. The game just lacks polish. The game doesn't have the quality a triple A game should have. I love Assassin's Creed games, and I've played all of them. Porzuciłem tytuł po ok. 10h. Historia bez emocji, powtarzalny gameplay, walka - czyli serce gry - woła o pomstę do nieba - sztywna jak nieszczęście. Ubisoft comes with the next AC title following the rpg approach introduced by Origins and continues the gradual decline of these games. Once again the world design is great, the world is large and looks fantastic. But this is almost everything positive i can say about this game. The story is almost non existent. It is written in "episodic" parts, which in reality feels like you are constantly thrown into these huge worlds without really knowing what your motivation is. The main character is always what the current story needs him to be, sometimes a little angry, sometimes a little smart, but never consistent nor interesting. He or she( which is a whole problem in itself, that ubisoft keeps making the main characters sex interchangable, because it takes away any identity of said charcater) walks by everything happening in the world without any individual opinion. AC needs a strong and interesting main character not just a blank projection surface. The worst part of this game is, that it not only coninues the franchises loss of identiy it increased it even more. In the past two games they kept the "supernatural" mythology stuff in the DLCs, so you could say " Ok now im in the bonus content and it gets a little crazy". In this game this is embedded heavily into the main game and it takes AC from a historical drama with hooded assassins set in the big events of our past, into a fantasy rpg inspired by mythology with hooded vikings. All the stealth and "assassinesque" parts of the game feel forced and more alibi than anything else. The franchise keeps losing its identity and the devs know this but instead of going back to this identiy they just put in alibi oldschool mechanics like one-hit assasinations and a badly implemented social stealth system to silence the fans that want assassins creed to be assassins creed. The fighting system feels like a step back, it is close to the one in odyssey and origins but feels less controllable and very delayed. Animations and cutscenes are nowhere near the level they were in origins( odyssey was already a step back imo). Generally a lot of things in the game feel like they still need polishing and are more in a beta state than already released. Ultimatly this is a product made by thousands of people for millions of dollars over the course of years. This is by no means a "trash" game its obviously a AAA-product and you can undoubtedly have fun exploring the beautifull world as a viking, building your city with your own crew, but as an AC fan from the first hour it hurts to see where the franchise went and what they are doing with these games. With a story the writers actually cared about, with a main character with an actual character and with a little more respect and love for what assassins creed really is, this game could have been so much more than just a large, beautifull world. I hope they find people that actually love the AC games to make the decisions for the future games, so this franchise can have a soul again. Expand

Over the past few games, there has been a big move away from stealth and assassinations and pretty much just making a brawler set in the AC universe. For Origins and Odyssey, I at least felt like the setting and story and decent ranged options made them good games, but Valhalla just isn't doing it.

What i can’t get ocer is the shicking Quality Control and Quality Assurance that simply did not go into this game. Block function rarely works as it should; follow this road / the river to your destination, doesn’t work. And worst of all, you know the mapping is duff when you’re worried your character will struggle to walk through a door / climb through a window without getting stuck on the environment. It always been this way and is controlled-throwing annoying. The mapping is at its worst when collecting the history pages - pretty much given up on that for now. The block function also seemingly has a massive lag when executing against harder foes. I’m 80 hours in and am struggling to find the will to continue. The poor mapping would be forgivable because of the sheer size of the map; however, its just something the development team have no fixed, and that just sucks. Last AC game for me - just fed-up with shoddy, half-done mapping. Expand

Pros: Story is good, graphics decent, assasins theme is kind of back.
Negatives: Lots of copy paste missions, glitched trophies preventing platinum. Most of mid-game is boring (for each area, new characters are introduced and used for the next 2-3 hours, then thrown away once the area arc finishes)

I understand that Ubisoft are trying to make the game more modern but it’s lost a lot of what made Assassin’s Creed so fun to play. The last Assassin’s Creed game that I think was fun to play and stuck to the Assassin’s Creed style of play was Syndicate.

Valhalla is much more of an open-world adventure game and is about going around a pretty unpopulated England making alliances. The story never pulled me in and the main story is so loose and is tied to building houses in your settlement. At many time I was lost and thinking how do I advance the story.
I’m from England and I love playing games set in the country or city that I live in. However, England in this game, as a setting, is not very interesting. The towns and Cities are small with some exceptions. There are no massive cities which you can freely free run around and now the free-running mechanic is basically gone and now all you climb are some cliffs and small buildings.

It might just be me but it doesn’t feel like an Assassin’s Creed game anymore. Some people might really like the new games but I just don’t know.
(I quite liked Unity so my opinions may not be super valid)

Graphics: I don't know if it is just me, but the graphics are not good, there is a bunch of screen tearing and the models look ugly, i have seen PC Gameplay and the graphics seem a lot better so it may just be a PS4 thing ( Or maybe the game is just pissy at me rating it 5 )
Sound: Voice acting is much better than Odyssey, Eivor sound great and so do all the other characters, soundtrack feels ambient and mysterious, sound when fighting is very nice.
Characters: i love the Characters, they dont feel like plastic barbie dolls, they feel real, they each have their own personality which i just love because it makes you relate to them and become emotionally attached to them and in turn makes the story an emotional, tense, amazing one, which i would call one of the best in AC History
Variety: Variety is where i think the game really goes uphill, it has so many places to explore and the don't feel like carbon copies of each other, the enemies each have their own strengths and weaknesses to learn, a lot of gear that CHANGES APPERANCE WHEN YOU UPGRADE IT, which blew my mind when i first saw it.

But now comes to the reason i have rated this game a 5, if not for this i would have rated it at the very least an 8...

The crashes and glitches overrun my game, ever hour i have to reload because the game just wants to die, the glitches, while sometimes funny, can ruin the game, i am currently stuck on a quest because it wont play the cutscene to allow me to finish it...

There is probably al ot more i could have said, but, this is what came to mind as i was writing...

The next thing I unfortunately hate about this game is the environment, the color pallet and scenery are not at all suited to what is supposed to be England. The landscape could have been done so much better than it has been, but it feels as if it was designed by artists that have never left the city let alone visited the English countryside.

Finally I hate the how the vikings are very diplomatic and PC in this game. Vikings would not release hostages and when you plunder if you kill NPC's that are not solders you get told off and told you will de-synchronize. Vikings would have literally killed everyone, especially the clergy.

I wanted to love this game, i really did, I brought a new graphics card just to play it. But i don't think i actually like it, it feels a bit of a let down, the franchise had the chance to do something completely different with this game but overall the game feels bland and just a bit disappointing.

The graphics are by far Valhalla’s best feature. The backdrop of English woodland and rivers makes for a very pleasant and vibrant environment. The problem I have with this is the same as Origins and Odyssey; it’s just too big. After a few hours things almost seem to ‘repeat’, as backgrounds look familiar no matter where you are on the map.

The story of Valhalla is as forgettable as previous entries, like a limp attempt at a JRPG. There’s a big battle at the start where you as a child witness people you love dying, leading to revenge quests. I don’t even think there’s a risk of spoiling the story here as it’s so familiar and cropped from every other game of this genre. I found the voice acting of female Eivor to be painfully cringey and forced also.

The gameplay of Valhalla is where they somehow made the game significantly worse than its predecessors. With Odyssey there was an enjoyable loop with satisfying combat. Valhalla has somehow lost this. Combat is monotonous. Areas are irritating to traverse, with rooms becoming so randomly dark.

The map of Valhalla is stupidly large and bloated with the same Ubisoft open-world crap that you need to explore and collect. It’s copied and pasted almost identically from previous entries. At first, it’s nice to explore but then I see familiar icons appearing on the map and large distances to unlock fast travel points and become very fatigued by the repetition.

If Valhalla was the only AC game on PS4, this would be a pretty decent game, but asking us to pay full price for the same old game with a new coat of paint is scandalous.

Valhalla also suffers massively from a lack of identity. The Viking theme isn’t as vivid and won’t live on in my memory as Origin and Odyssey did with their Egyptian and Greek themes. Games like Greedfall and Witcher have similar woodland environments, making Valhalla feel like it’s treading old ground.

Let’s also not forget the buggy nature of this game and the exploitative microtransactions.
Overall, this is a game to be avoided. Origins and Odyssey had refreshing elements, but Valhalla wears out its welcome very quickly, coming across as a game designed by businessmen sat around a table in suits rather than passionate developers keen to expand the limits of videogames. Avoid.

Graphically the game is really not that great. Does not pop out as warm as Origins and feels full scale-palette as Odyssey. Feels a little bland, no matter where on the map you are its just the same

Wading trough snow is not technically as great as say, RDR2. face animation and textures is not very fluid. And since when was hipster hair fashion a thing in the Viking age?
Also the kill-animations are cool ONCE. Here they are happening over and over all the time on big brutes and you have to watch them every time until you just want to puke. Let us turn it OFF please Ubisoft.

The Assassins mechanic is pretty much non-existent in this game. Just don´t bother trying using stealth for garrison infiltrations. It´s broken and corrupted, completely decimated from the game. Stealth is cooked down to only hiding in the bushes. Not ONCE could i do a mission completely stealth. Impossible as i can guarantee you that you will be spotted after 10 seconds.
The assassins formula is simply not there anymore, which is sad.

Ubisoft has been very good at designing maps, but here it all feels generic, no wow-factor areas to speak of.
Instead they make a map to annoy you. The have placed rock fences ALL around the map to kill any fluidity of rising horseback, as to believe if vikings really built so many rock fences. But all in all I was hoping for huge mythical places, temples and norse fables tales areas. This is just whack.
To be honest, the further out in game you came, the more detached from feeling a Viking era game it became. Thanks to technical stuff and large society cities & villages.

Audio: Music model follows same suit as previous. The same goes for voice acting that is just as bad as it always have been. accents terrible, comedic at point.

By far the worst part of AC Valhalla is the combat. God knows what they were thinking designing it. The amount of sluggish feel and lag in response and button registration is the worst i have seen in any game. Gone is fluidity, in comes stagnation and rage. Your protagonist at often just stands there stupid while you mash buttons to counter attacks. It is TOTALLY broken. Blocking only works when it wants to.
    Absolute crap.

Story is abysmal at best, i was hoping for more mysticism and norse fable episodes as i said. But again the story is the prime motivator here to even complete the game. But the story just dilutes into nothing. So many missions consists of you just riding long paths just to talk to a guy, for then to return to you came from and talk to another. And at the same time, devoid of any action. On another note: Im in England and i do not really know what my main goal in this game is? Make alliance with the brits? I just seem to make alliance in one area after another and it just never ends.
The side quest must be some of the most sloppiest written and hastily made rubbish by far. Some are borderline no more than map & game fillers. You get a quest to fetch something, yeah its just around the house from here. Play hide and seek with some kids. Burn down a house. One mission i simply just talked to a man, Mission complete, here is 500 exp. I mean come on. No challenge, no frills. Just utter crock of nonsense that ridicules any valid seriousness in this game.

I was grinding this game hard to begin with. With a slow and uninspiring intro in Norway, England does boost your morale to explore when you get there. But it is too BIG. But after the usual explore, hoard and collect in massive doses, i got tired. Since 60% of all loot is somewhat underground or locked in, you have to spend many boring hours just trying to find the entrance, or the key. Yawn..... Never has hoarding been so boring.

Bugs.. plenty. Even game breaking ones. Blue-screen of death happens ever so often.

Nope, sorry Ubisoft. Not only is this game awfully long, but boring storyline in the process. A wasted opportunity of what could have been an epic tale.

This is a very disappointing version of Assassin's Creed, to the point that it really doesn't feel like the franchise. The mini games such as stacking cairn stones and anomalies are a frustrating waste of time. After a while the game play and main story get repetitive and you wonder what on earth you're playing this for.

Beautiful game, huge potential, nice mechanics BUT filled with bugs (many of which are game breaking).
They did poor testing and/or rushed out the game to cash in before real games like Cyberpunk are released.
I am not going to buy again from ubisoft anytime soon.

Buggy mess. Whatever was left of assassin's creed has been replaced with generic open world mechanics (which is saying something). Nothing really interesting about it. It's a game for small children disguised as something more.

At some point the story seemed to get my attention, but quickly got away cause of meaningless implementations of story parts which that didn't made any sense. The part that you can customize and get your own crew seemed nice at first, but also this element seemes useless because you can't do anything but repetitive raids with them. You can't summon them to aid you during fights or the storyline. You only can summon them when a river is close so you can travel the rivers with them. I feel like I played a different game than the other reviewers because this game sucks. It feels like a pathetic attempt at a Witcher game. Firstly, it is not an assassin's creed game. Firstly, it is not an assassin's creed game. I don't care that it isn't assassins vs templars but it should at least be a stealth game and this isn't. The game actually discourages stealth. In raids you need your crew to open doors and chests so you can't be stealthy and in the main missions you often siege a fortress rather than stealthily infiltrate it. Stealth is hard when you try to be stealthy because guards are always looking at each other and instantly become alerted as soon as they glimpse you. Stealth is useless. You can't even assassinate the zealots. In an assassins game you can't assassinate an enemy!

The game is too long. The length wouldn't be a problem if the game was full of fun and interesting content but it isn't. The main story has you going to each region of England to get an alliance. All regions are required to complete the story and only some of them are fun and interesting. After you've done a few they become boring and repetitive. First you go talk to someone, then you follow them slowly somewhere, where you get in a small fight. Talk to them again. Go more places to talk to more people or get in small fights. Talk some more. Fight a siege. Repeat for next region, unless it is a city. In a city you'll track down three order members and kill them. This game is very dialogue heavy. There is so much following people and talking. It's not interesting or fun, just a chore. It is clear the devs bit off more than they can chew and were forced to copy and paste content.

The side content is mostly useless and also not fun. Gear stats have little effect so once you've found a weapon type you like there is no reason to get more gear. You find ingots to upgrade your gear so finding them can be useful but there is more than enough ingots in the game. Annoyingly, these things are almost always behind a locked or barred door so it can turn into a chore to find them.
Artifacts and tattoo/hair designs are completely useless and also often a chore to get.
The mysteries can be interesting and I did a lot of them early game but the game started feeling long and drawn out so I just stopped doing them. You get more than enough skill points doing the main story anyway.

Parkour is clumsy. It can be a chore to get through a window.
Loading times are very long and the game loads a lot.

Overall, this game's problem is there is a huge map with a ton of content but so much of it is completely useless and repetitive this game feels like a chore to play. Took me 75 hours to beat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The old saying "Quality over quantity" sums up the problems of this game. For a game with so much "content" it is incredibly boring almost from start to finish. Having said that I couldn't actually bring myself to finish after I'd already sunk around 70 hours into that damn thing, I wasn't even near finished with it. It is a game that keeps you thinking "any minute now it's going to get better and that switch is going to go off where I'm having fun and locked in" but that moment never comes.

Most if not nearly all of the optional content on the map is absolutely not worth finding and players will learn this very quickly. There are a handful out of the 100s of markers that are interesting but it really does feel like filler to pad out the experience. The story is incredibly boring, dreary, and drawn out beyond comprehension. Once you've taken one region you've taken them all and by the 4th or 5th you're just done with it. You don't care about any of the characters like you might have done in Odyssey say with Kassandra, and as such there is little to no personal investment in any of it.

If you like running around dreary English fields for 70 - 100 hours doing nothing that matters then try it out. I was warned not to but I took a chance and I feel like I wasted 70 hours.

The audio sometimes abruptly ends or doesn’t match the lips. I’m lucky I’m even able to play it. My brother is stuck at the beginning of the game because of a Game Breaking Bug where the Seer’s Solace quest line doesn’t even show up for him so he cannot progress in the game past the 1st quest. It’s been almost two days and there is still no update for it. The combat is so unbelievably bland, boring and easy. It’s actually atrocious. The controls are clunky. The camera is also so far away during combat I can’t see anything. I’m playing on the hardest difficulty and it’s a cake walk. The “social stealth” is an absolute joke. It’s not even a thing. They lied about the fact that they made the world smaller than Odyssey. (It’s actually bigger)
If this game did not have the Viking aesthetic, it would be an absolute flop. The voice actor for Eivor is amazing, love him. Overall, the game feels like they wanted to do something great, but it lacks heart. The graphics are bad, and the character models move weird.
It feels like just another “open world AC game” with a different skin. (don’t just be large for the sake of being large) They have completely lost track of what Assassin’s Creed was, and moved on to something new, that could be cooler, but fails miserably. AC needs to be a 3 year cycle game, and they need to listen to their fan base. Ubisoft only seems to care about sh***ing out games and making money, which will end up hurting them in the long run.

Bring back the old AC, get rid of the heavy rpg elements, revamp the combat, build a better parkour system, and give us Assassins vs Templar’s. Massive world, quests, combat, everything was good. Yes. I had that feeling IN 2013 when Assassin's Creed: Black Flag came out. It's been seven years and there's barely innovation. You're playing the same game but with different settings. For people who have played Assassin's Creed for the last 13 years, gaming at least for the past 20 years, Ubisoft will simply not satisfy you anymore unless they change up the formulas a bit.

    The bad:
    - The parry system has a delay. Comparing to Ghost of Tsushima where Jin Sakai instantly holds his blade up to deflect enemy attacks at the exact moment you press L1, Eivor (the main protagonist)tries to deflect an attack in 0.5 seconds after you pressed the L1 button. Not sure if this is a design flaw or done purposely, but I didn't encounter any of this in the last Assassin's Creed.

    - Again, the combat is rather uninspired. Comparing to Ghost of Tsushima where you get 4 fighting styles, you can equip various weapons on your left and right hand. It feels very buggy when your right hand is a heavy weapon and your left hand is a hammer.

    - They look most of the loot away. You can't really collect as many weapons and armor or gear anymore and compare their stats instantly in the menu now. Most of your rewards when you complete quests or raids will result in you getting more crafting components. These crafting components can then use it for upgrading. Not gonna lie, you might just happen to keep every gear without selling any of them when you complete the game.

-Maps way too huge with nothing to collect. Personal preference. Since there is no gear to actually collect, it's kind of pointless to wander around and plunder. Sure, you can collect the wealth to upgrade your settlement, but it feels pointless.

    - Dull characters and story. The Vikings are rather honorable and tamed, and not as brutal as they are supposed to be in their historical counterpart. Though I suppose they are depicted as the actual heroes of the story so they can't have the brutality shown and portrayed in the game. In the story, you travel from one place to another, constantly having new characters shown in an area where you have to earn their for them to pledge their allegiance to you. Rinse and repeat and that's pretty the story. The amount of characters in this game makes you care less and less the more you are introduced.

    - Frustrating to find the treasures. Is it even worth it?

So, if you are inexperienced or unfamiliar with Ubisoft games, you will love this game.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a wonderful addition to the AC franchise. It manages to avoid the tropes that became overplayed and focuses on a small well structured story. The fighting mechanics are enjoyable and offer many choices to fit different playing styles. There are a significant amount of bugs and the AI is underwhelming at times.
