This game was very pretty for its time, and arguably the best realised city in an AC game when it was released. I Plat this recently, so have a decent gauge on the title. Unfortunately the thing that immediately stands out in my mind: the controls.

Ab-so-lutely the worst controls in an AC game, and any platformer / open world game I've ever played in general. Actually so bad I felt myself writhing in pain at points and audibly screeching at the non-responsiveness at times, the inconsistency and unexpected jank, how there's often a delay (by which time you're already screwed), how it demands precise control at times when the control is anything but precise.

I am soo glad they fixed the controls in later AC games, such as Origins or Odyssey. There were a handful bugs in this fully patched version, but extremely rare in a game full of 'stuff' to do. Sometimes repetitive stuff, sometimes mind-numbing stuff, but there's stuff, and a lot of it. And chests, and cockade collectibles, and a lot of them. Too many of them. You have 250+ collectibles, and thank god you can open all chests. When the game originally released you needed a mobile app to open some chests. Ubisoft saw sense and fixed that at the end of 2014. Also, special mention about all the side-missions, many of which are very samey and repetitive, but some definitely stood out as decent. For example, I found co-op fun. This was probably my favourite side content outside of some of the heists missions and the Rift missions. However the Murder Mystery / Companion / Paris stories stuff? Not so much. Really grindy, and really samey.

The game also manages getting 00's of NPC on screen at a time, which caused some of the launch issues on fps. Playing it today, I have to hand it to them. The FPS did not stand out to me. The issues with this game are the controls. I pushed through as it's AC, and I hate to not 100% games if I can avoid. Will I ever touch this game again though? Heck no. This one for AC series completionists only.

By far the worst assassins creed to this piont. The Controlls are terrible. When u want to climb down a wall the game does other things 90% of the time. It is nearly impossible to stay undercover and every enemy shoots you down with you having no Chance to attack him. The worst 20 hours of my life. Only played it because I want to play all assassins creed games...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. +1 point for the historical beauty of this game. +1 point for the Nostradamus's riddles. +1 point for detective missions. So, overall it's 7... Because this game has absolutely the WORST controls. Maybe Tallion from the Middle-Earth was as clumsy as Arno. My Dualshock suffered a lot of kicking and throwing because of this game. I played this game in 2020, apparently it was optimistic of me to assume Ubisoft had ironed the kinks out of this game by now as I still faced countless bugs, glitches, and crashes. Assassin's Creed: Unity is the jankiest game I've ever played and is frustrating and disappointing compared to previous titles in the series. Compared to past titles, many established features are nonsensically stripped, gated, or otherwise less functional, and the game's animation systems are buggy.

    Assassination:
Unlike the previous 4 major titles, Arno doesn't start with double assassination enabled; it's gated behind character progression (and thus made disjointed from the story). Assassination in general works less reliably than previous titles. The targeting for air and double assassinations doesn't seem to work as well as it had in the past, and unlike AC 3 and 4, you can't hold down Assassinate for the game to contextually initiate and chain kills. When combat occurs, Arno can't normal or air assassinate a target (even if you successfully break line of sight and they don't see the attacking coming), but oddly, he can spam corner assassinations. When an assassination fails, the game strangely gives the target i-frames while they are the ground.

    Combat:
Combat is unstable. Enemies sometimes forget what they're trying to do. For example, an enemy might snap out of being staggered by your attacks, or pathfinding breaks, and the enemy runs around Arno like a chicken with its head cut off. Sometimes the game can't resolve if Arno is fighting or fleeing, so he fails to attack, parry, or dodge, or is stuck repeatedly drawing and sheathing his weapon. This is most frustrating when the enemy lands an attack because Arno is stuck re-drawing his weapon. (The Ezio Collection avoids this by letting you lock-on to force a combat stance.) In the worst case, Arno may just freeze and is unable to attack or move. Another point of frustration: enemy attack indicators aren't reliable; sometimes they fail to render, and other times, they appear too briefly before an attack to be helpful. The too brief indicators might be a design-choice, but it's a poor one since the game makes no effort to introduce or train you towards facing tougher enemy types. The worst of the enemy design is that some enemies can dodge bullets despite being blinded or stunned. When combat is stable, Arno is less capable than past protagonists. Arno: can't use his fists or hidden blade in combat, can't do counter-kills, can't do kill streaks, can't use human shields, can't disarm enemies, and can't block melee attacks. Arno relies on dodge, parry, a 3-hit combo (regardless of weapon type), his tools/gadgets, and some additional moves unlocked through character progression (Stunning Strike, Heavy Attack, and Ground Execution). The third hit of Arno's combo has a long recovery, during which he can't attack or use gadgets (but can oddly dodge or parry), which makes the combat feel clumsy and unresponsive even when the enemy is not bugging out.

    Stealth:
Unity adds crouched stealth movement to the series (which is great), but that is the only non-controversial change to stealth. The automatic corner cover system of AC 3 and 4 is replaced with a manual cover system that allows low walls to used as cover as well. However, the new system is sometimes unreliable about which surfaces Arno can and can't press himself against. Additionally, exiting cover can be a finicky affair, and counterintuitively, Arno can't round corners like in most cover systems. The new system is further hobbled by the removal of the whistle-lure feature present in the previous two games. Also unintuitively, enemies are lured by the sight of Cherry Bombs and not the sound. The game is inconsistent about whether enemies can hear conflicts or assassinations through walls and floors, and pickpocketing still sucks.

    Movement:
Functionally, It's not better than previous games. AC 3 and 4 already had controlled descent; (they didn't communicate it well). Some of new animations in Unity make parkour less stable; Arno's spinning jumps sometimes take you in unexpected directions, and entering buildings through windows is slow and awkward. Manual side-jumps have unfortunately been removed, and like all previous protagonists, Arno is defeated by balcony railings and ladders.

    Story and Scenario Weirdness:
The game doesn't do much to develop characters. Each memory/target sequence feels very short. And inexplicably, targets stay in an area despite finding corpses during missions. When Arno kills a target, rather than hearing a dying confession like in previous titles, the game has the odd choice of Arno viewing specific memories of the target at specific camera angles. It's very strange and causes a plot hole regarding the main antagonist's identity being such a long mystery. The weirder part is that the other Assassin characters are comfortable with Arno's power; it feels like very important things happened during the story's time skips. Why does everyone know about Arno's necromantic mind-reading? The story also fails to endear Arno's mentor (Bellec) and love interest (Elise).

Not the best AC with some annoying things to handle, but still fun. Not good enough to run for platinum with some really boring side missions and forcing of coop play.

Forget the performance problems (they've been fixed for the most part; the game still doesn't look as good or run as well and Black Flag, but whatever), this game would be horrendous if it ran perfectly and looked like real life. Boring main character. I'm actually okay with his motivations and I actually really like that he goes around the assassin order and does stuff on his own, but he's dreadfully boring. The accents are embarrassingly bad. I didn't know every French person in the French revolution spoke with a British accent. I expect better from Ubisoft (but at this point, I'm not sure why). Every single supporting character (except for the redheaded chick) is a freaking travesty. Poorly written, boring blank slates who offer nothing to the game except tell Arno where to go next. And a final boss fight that makes you rely on the game's biggest technical blunder (as far as gameplay goes), the "cover" system. Half of the time, the character never snaps into cover, and the button to do so is bound to the same button as "free run," so 75% of the time, you'll go flying around or over the piece of cover you intend to get behind, causing the final boss to shoot you with a death laser that drains your health in about 2 seconds. Ubisoft did something special with the game, making the movement system feel like the best it's been for about 30% of the time, and for the other 70%, it feels like the worst thing I've experienced. The game is ludicrously bad because it just feels phoned in. They KNEW we were going to buy it, so they half-a$$ed it.It feels like they got halfway through developing it, and they got bored and went home. It's offensive. Destiny is better, and that's saying something. Forcing myself through the final couple of missions was actually physically painful. I'm going to the Doctor tomorrow. Expand

Now that it's been patched, AC Unity can finally attempt to live up to the hype. Does it succeed? Well... Sort of.

Firstly, revolutionary Paris is gorgeous and very accurately represented. Sure, the map is like fifty times smaller than the actual city, but major landmarks are where they're supposed to be, and look exactly like what they're supposed to look like. I would know, I grew up right in the heart of Paris. The walls look old and cracked, the streets are filled with the hustle and bustle of hundreds of NPCs with almost no visible graphical slowdown, each district has enough to it to look distinctive, the lighting is absolutely phenomenal, and everything just look jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

The parkour is... well, it's alright. It does it's job. A few times, I've thrown myself into the black abyss or off a cathedral into absolutely nothing and died horribly. You still get caught on elements you didn't even know were there, like in every other Assassin's Creed game. Sometimes you just can't jump to the next hold for completely arbitrary reasons, just like every game before it. Overall, though, it works pretty well, and being able to tear through building interiors is great.

Combat is much improved over previous installments. Parrying and dodging work now, and you can get easily overrun by enemies if you don't plan ahead. I did, however, find that smoke grenades are an easy and incredibly efficient way to cheese the combat and turn almost every encounter to your advantage.

Side quests are very rinse and repeat. Some of the Paris stories are really fun, but most of them are just another variation on "kill him" or "steal this". The option to buy cafes and social clubs to generate more money is neat, and isn't intrusive on the game at all.

Story is whatever. It's not the best I've ever seen, though it's far from the worst. Average, I suppose, would be the qualifier. Arno is rather uninteresting except for the occasional quip or one liner, the Assassins are presented as a bunch of pricks, and the Templar are equally mean-spirited in their presentation. The only really stand out character, aside from the occasional historical fanservice, is Elise.

Overall, I would rate this game favorably. It's not the greatest game I've ever played, but it's probably the best Assassin's Creed game that didn't involve pirate ships I've ever played. Pick it up for cheap and see what you've been missing.

I consider myself very open to new ideas and am not quick to write off a game that isn't perfect at launch, but nearly 5 months after release the game still feels extremely clunky and unpolished even after all the updates they through into it. And when I say clunky what I mean is frame rate drop, free running mechanics not working as their supposed to (worse than ac1 imo), a slew of graphical and rendering issues, and walking through NPCs like they are phantoms. I played up to sequence 6 before I said, I'll wait for the patch, so I waited for a few months and still not enjoying the game due to this unpolished product. Just going to look up a plot synopsis online because I can't take another minute of playing this very clunky and unfinished product. Hopefully Ubisoft learns from this experience and doesn't release another sub-par game just to meet a deadline. Expand

For being a game about assassins, the Assassin's Creed franchise never had a proper stealth system, until now. It's very fleshed out and very fun. The missions themselves are pretty fun, and the main target assassinations are the most fun to be had in the entire franchise. The investigation of who commited various murders around the city side quests are actualy very fun, and they have an engaging enough story to hook you on finding out who did it. The costumization of Arno has a lot of depth, Various guns, swords and clothing can be put on him. The coop is really fun, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense, story-wise and I'm unsure of why it has not been implemented on the recent installment.
    Bad Points:
The game runs terribly, a lot of performance issues and incredible amount of bugs and glitches even with all of its patches. Assassin's Creed III had been a low point in the series, performance-wise, but this is even worse. The main character is terribly uninteresting (Arno) though Elise is the bright spot for sure. Also his entire story is just a mess, with no one knowing why they are even doing what they are doing, and the romance feels completely out of place. The present story aswell is just unnecesary. Assassin's Creed III lest a Juno cliffhanger in the end, but neither Black Flag or Unity cared to move that story forward, making us wonder if that should've ever been put in the story in the first place. Although the game is packed full of content, most of it is just filler. Lots of treasures and feathers mostly (which, yes, were heavily present in previous installments) but this one feels like it puts twice the filler than ever before, just to make its city look dense.
    Woth Adressing:
Multiplayer doesn't comeback for some odd reason, being replaced by coop (which admitedly is pretty fun), even though it was one of the most unique and fun multiplayers around. There is no horse, and makes exploration slower, though its probably for the best considering it had had clunky controlls in the past (Brotherhood, I'm talking to you).
    Final Score:
Assassin's Creed Unity is a very mixed bag. It gets a lot of deserved and undeserved criticism. This is game, like Assassin's Creed III, tries to mix up the formula and make innovations such as a whole new stealth system, open assassinations and new types of side activities. However, this game was clearly rushed, and suffers from it story-wise, gameplay-wise and performance-wise. After ditching its present day story and making an uninteresting one in revolutionary Paris, I think it's time for this series to say goodbye.

However, this game lacks something the others have: relevance. This game's plot serves no purpose to the Assassin's Creed franchise. You could well skip this game and not have missed a thing; it's filler. The thing is, Ubisoft could've gotten away with that, but the story is only average at best.
The game is impressive to look at; Paris is easily the most beautiful, immersive, and detailed city in the series. The game's protagonist, Arno, is a charming character, and there are TONS of things to do, it'll make your head hurt if you have a bit of OCD for getting things to 100% at once. The combat and parkour have been changed to accomodate players who want a bit more complexity and challenge, and I say these are very welcome. Animations seem organic; The player's body behaves and reacts accordingly to its surroundings more naturally than ever. From a gameplay standpoint, Unity is one of the best in the series.
However, one cannot wash off the taste of a bad launch, one cannot shake the feeling that it all feels disconnected, as if the time invested in these characters is pointless and not worth of your time. Assassin's Creed has lost its touch of brilliance in story-telling, it has gone from mouth-opening revelations and cliffhangers to a cliche and generic formula, which is a shame. Last year's Black Flag already suffered of this, however Black Flag's saving grace was its consistency, cohesiveness, and its all-around fun gameplay. Unity feels more like a chore rather than an inviting fun experience. It's the best looking AC game yet, its got solid mechanics, but in the end it's the way it was poorly handled and the way it contributes nothing to the series' story that makes it all feel like a waste of time for the true fans.

Story wise the game is quite lame, and has no emotional peaks or interesting turn of events, for they can be seen from a mile away. The worst aspect of this game, are its buggs and severe framerate issues, both of which turn the experience into a frustrating one.

Not all changes were bad, tough: the character customization is a welcomed change, (too bad is oftenly locked behind paywalls and microtransactions), also is the unique kills spread along the main missions. The city is beautiful to look at, and so it`s the character design. But in the end, the ills overweight the goods, and Unity shall ever be remembered as the lowest point of the series, and a reminder of how hurtful rushed videogame schedules are.

First off, Ubisoft patched glaring bugs like missing skin and also removed the requirement to check into Uplay to access all of the game's content. These goodwill moves make the game much more playable. Secondly, the UI and in-game map are cluttered with too many in-game collectibles and co-op missions. Coming in a year and a half later, I feel safe in ignoring all of these. I am not going to "platinum" this game, so the collectibles don't matter. No one else plays this game, so co-op doesn't matter. This far from the game's launch, I am totally focused on the main quest (and tackling thieves on the street).

The game is very, very similar to Assassin's Creed 2. In fact, Assassin's Creed 2 was the last Assassin's Creed I played. The differences between the two are obviously the improved graphics and the story. Unity is gorgeous. Even a year and half later, it is one of the best looking PS4 games. The size of the city and on-screen action of the NPCs is amazing. The story in Unity is not so great. You get to meet a young Napolean. That seems cool. However, while Ezio was running his revenge scheme and learning about the Assassins, Arno is just running a revenge scheme, and keeps revenging long after he gets his revenge. Arno isn't a bad guy, for an assassin. It's just that Ezio was a better character you cared about more. At one point in Unity, Arno fights his mentor. I had zero feels for this fight. The characters didn't matter.

I'm giving Unity a solid 7. This isn't a terrible score. Unity is playable and fun in a drop a smoke bomb and spam square sort of way. The game looks great. The problem is clearly a lack of focus. Ubisoft was intent on tacking on as many features as possible and connecting to Uplay as much as possible. It's like how even the best Dell computer is sullied by its own crapware. Unity is so burdened by features that a new player can hardly figure out how to equip alternative weapons much less find anything on the in-game map. If you pick this game up for $10 or less, just ignore all of the side crap and focus on the main quest. Also, upgrade your home base early for easy money. Oh, and spam those smoke bombs.

I don't really have much good to say about this game besides the amazing graphics, atmosphere, and detail that was put into Unity. After the short lived "wow" factor, I quickly realized that the free-running parkor system was seriously broken. Arno never seems to go where you want. Running on the ground is frustrating because your character will run up random things all the time. Moving from point to point is more of a chore than anything else. Trying to enter any windows will climbing walls is more difficult than it should be. I enjoy the new controlled descent feature they have added but getting up to a certain point can be frustrating due to the unresponsive controls.

Well the story missions are nice as are the cutscences. Some of the Paris stories are nice as well but that is about where it ends. Murder mystery, Nostradamus riddles, and collecting treasure chests are all a chore. There is nothing enjoyable about these missions. Helix rift missions are cool the first time you do it but then become a chore as well. They say they have a new and improved combat system but there is really nothing new besides the enemies having a health bar. You have a few new moves but nothing to write home about.

The only bright spot out of all this is the co-op missions (even if at times very buggy) as well as the clubs. A shell of the game it could have been. It lacks innovation besides the co-op feature. I appreciate the attention to detail and history but when the main game is lacking in any fun content it's hard for me to enjoy the atmosphere as much as I would like to.

If I was to sum up this game in one word it would be: chore. Nothing fun, nothing innovative, and just a grind through all the content so I can move on to something better. A shame really after how much fun black flag was. I will be holding off on any assassin creed purchases in the future as should the rest of you. Also, I can't really recommend this game because there is nothing fun or worth while that you have't already seen from a Creed game.

Nostradamus missions and investigations are a nice alternate gameplay solution, but the franchise is starting to die out.

I bought this game for 19,99€ in 2016, after reading so many bad reviews. This is now the opinion of a Belgian, interested in French history (we learn it at school), and I think this has an importance on how you feel this game. I'll make it simple, pros and cons. I can understand people rating it 0-1, but there is a chance that you'll enjoy this game, despite all the problems. To compare with Dead Island, the most broken game ever, as long as you have fun, who cares...

    Pros :
    - Once again, learn history through Assassins's Creed, it is accurate, if you're interested in the French revolution, it's just every History teacher's dream.
    - Nostradamus missions, enjoyable to a certain point, you have to guess famous monuments through charades and clues. Works better if you know Paris.
    - Find the murderer missions, not as easy at it looks, once again based on real history.
    - Paris is beautiful, thousands of people in the streets, nice atmosphere. Maybe the game has been fixed a little since the first very bad reviews about graphics, maybe I don't care that much.
    - Multiplayer can be fun, being part of 4 assassins flying like the wind through windows and climbing all over the place is a nice feeling

    Cons:
    - Glitches everywhere, flying people and objects, people glitching through walls, but it doesn't actually messes with the gameplay. I was never stuck anywhere in combat or climibing.
    - Main quest is boring and predictable. That guy killed that guy, let's kill him.. oh wait, he received orders from that guy, let's kill him. Go there, kill everyone, come back.
    - AI is still poor. Walk pass a guy, he sees you, take cover, 10 seconds later he forgets you.. Classic AC.
    - **** Arno climbing on everything when you just want to run through a narrow street, makes you lose missions where you have to stalk someone or be stealthy
    - Multiplayer is laggy as hell sometimes, NAT3 issue
    - Gets repetitive, AC remains AC..

After Assassins Creed II things started to go stale for the series and last year’s Black Flag was a disappointment; however, I was still excited to see if Assassins Creed Unity could spice things up and bring the franchise back on track.

The game is set throughout the French Revolution. During a gathering, our young hero Arno Dorian falls in love with a girl named Elise at first site and as he is heading back to his father, an assassin trying to make a truce with the Templars, he shockingly finds him murdered.
Arno is then adopted and raised by Elise’s father until adult hood.

One day at a party, he once again sees his second father killed in front of him. He is framed and sent to prison where he meets veteran assassin Pierre Bolec who trains him for many months. Arno then teams up with Elise to avenge both fathers.

The first thing you will notice is how beautifully detailed everything is. The city is large and the buildings are set perfectly, making leaping from building to building smooth. Character animations are good and random weather effects with day-night cycle bring the environment life.
Every detail feels great, which makes exploring rewarding, the densely populated crowds are some of the largest I have seen in games and it is lovely to look at because you clearly see each of them doing different things such as talking, dancing and working.

You really do feel the city is in conflict because of how people react from riots to public executions; however, moving between the crowds doesn’t feel as fluid as previous titles. I also noticed some glitches, frame rate drops and a lot of loading time during my gameplay.

The overall movement of Arno feels smooth from the way he runs, walks, climbs and you do notice small touches that resemble Assassins Creed II. There have been changes in the combat system which I found worse in my opinion. In the old games, you were able to go for an instant kill after a counter, this time it only un-guards the enemy which allows you to remove health. Using smoke bombs to get away when enemies attack in large numbers is a very useful strategy.

There are some questionable missing mechanics in the combat system worth noting. You can’t grab an enemy and use them as a shield which also means the fun from throwing them of roof tops is gone as well. Killing an enemy with their own sword is no longer available and whistling is absent which is strange, so you will have to find different ways to distract guards.

Many of the kill animations were familiar but the addition of blood flowing after a kill and the ability to sneak is a nice touch. Sadly you get away with easy kills and the citizens rarely react even if you stab someone close to them which is a shame because it removes some tension; thankfully, the AI is intelligent and more aggressive this time but using the last known sighting mechanic wisely will give you the upper hand.

Completing missions earns you sync points that allow you to upgrade weapons, armor and unlocks new abilities. Money can also be made by opening treasure chests scattered across the game, downloading an app to participate in Uplay to unlock chests, looting bodies and completing missions. The money can be used to build your mission, weapons and clothing. I found the assassination missions the most exciting because they were numerous, varied and took place in large environments that gives you many options to tackle each mission. When you start an assassination mission, Arno will scout the area using his eagle vision to highlight clues in the area to use to your advantage.

There are numerous side missions to do other than the story that are vast and enjoyable like searching for hidden collectables and helping people to solve many murder cases. Customization is very good; it allowed me to think a lot of what weapons or items to buy and equip for my strategy. From stun bombs, cherry bombs to poison gas, Assassins Creed Unity has variety of weapons including the phantom blade which is a weapon mounted on your wrist that is used to kill silently.

There are some nice twists during the main campaign which takes around 16 hours to complete, unfortunately that doesn’t save the soulless story. The whole Templars vs Assassins is never fully clarified and main character Arno is a boring, unlikable character with no emotions. There is very little development in the relationship between Arno and Elise with no charm between them which leaves little reason to care about their love story.

Side missions encourage corporative gameplay. I enjoyed my time playing the co-op as it was fun, but I preferred playing strategically with a friend which is a blast as playing with unknown players will leave you frustrated in most cases because they will just barge through the mission removing all the tension. You can take on many missions with up to four characters as well and if one of them dies then it will be game over so coordinating well is key and rewards are given depending on your performance individually.

Yes, the graphics in Assassins Creed Unity are lovely but you can’t improve on the visuals only without improving the gameplay and story as well. Let’s hope that future Assassins Creed titles are more focused and interesting to play.

Ok, i bought this in 2016 despite the bad reviews and i got a free dlc (Dead kings) and a functional game. Well... i quess we should all stop buying games at launch what can i say.
Anyway the game is a good deal now at around 25 - 30 euros from retailers (physical version) and i 'm having a blast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 4 patches, this game has much less performance issues now, finally playable.

Though it's story background is the French Revolution, it barely has nothing to do with it. The whole story is only a revenge, and all what brotherhood did was just to stay out of the revolution. Remember the first CG trailer? I used to thought the main story is about how the brotherhood would help push the revolution. When I played the game, I found that it was nothing but my illusion…
I'm really appointed about the story.

As for the gameplay, it was actually pretty fun, side missions have various interesting stories.
But the biggest problem is taking cover, you have to leave current cover to get around the corner, even Watch_Dogs could do that better.

It's not worth my expectation, but still a not bad game, I'd give a 7 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game had some crashes while I used it, however I did not have any of the performance problems reported in the media. The story was disappointing though. They are in Paris during the revolution, and all that they can come up with is some cheesy love story? What about the motivations behind the revolution, for example? They could have gone into more details about the Jacobin Club at least.

I think that the game deserves some points for 3D modelling. Obviously a lot of effort went into re-creating Paris. There were some fun moments, and the fetch quests were not that bad. The controls were awkward at times but generally the combat was fluent and logical. In this sense the game succeeds from a core mechanic point of view.

It's the only game that kind of connects to me. There are just a few disappointing downsides. The one thing that completely pushed it down to a 9 was a certain button mashing mission in sequence 7 that was extremely hard. It's widely concerned a bug, but it's possible. JUST POSSIBLE. There was also the removal of the Assassin's Contracts that was in at least Black Flag. Those were awesome. Then there was something that wasn't quite a downside or an upside, which was the difficulty of regular combat now. It's now much harder, encouraging stealth, preventing not thinking and just fighting and making sure you can't just survive 30 people on you, but at the same time, you should be able to take up to 8 or so, yet it's hard to take on 3 without skills, armour and experience. Other than the button mashing, nothing big enough to take down my rating, so a 9. Expand

The game is so well done, the polished menus, the customisation, the coop play, the way you can interfere in control of region and assassin guild. My only complain is: Ive bought a DLC to wear the iron mask and paid 2.99 for it, but i can't equip it yet, just noticed the DLC isn't even released yet!!! plus i've read they will be giving this DLC free (Dead Kings) i feel somehow i've been cheated here! A action packed and engaging game, but some of the fun and excitement was taken away from me due to the sudden increase of stealth needed and the hardness of enemies at times. There are some glitches but overall, it is a good AC game and in my opinion, it is worth buying.

I got this game after the first couple patches came out, so I didn't experience any of the game-breaking glitches that others have reported. As someone who has played all of the Assassin's Creed games, I would put Unity up there just below AC2/AC4. I would rank it higher but the story isn't the strongest. Having said that, I think for the most part, the gameplay has received a much-needed upgrade in many respects:

    - Combat is challenging now. As a result, you really feel an incentive to be stealthier than in the past entries. All the tools and gadgets you have actually serve a purpose once again! I actually find myself using *cherry bombs* and stun grenades, since I prefer to save my smoke bombs for making escapes.

    - Although still not perfect, I think the Parkour controls have been significantly improved. Once you get used to them, you will be able to control Arno with greater precision and dexterity than you could previous titles. I feel like I can fly through Paris much more quickly than I could the cities in prior games.

    - I love the customization options you get for Arno and his equipment. Having so much control over appearance and abilities is awesome.

    - Graphics are incredible

    - Multiplayer is hit or miss. I like the idea of it, but ultimately, so often it seems like the missions just devolve into a chaotic melee.

    - Club competitions are a neat idea, but it sucks that they last a whole week and you get one piece of gear from it. You'll have to play a long time and be in a winning club to collect everything.

    - I love getting awarded Creed points for doing cool stuff. This, along with the increased combat difficulty, steers you towards completing missions in cool and stealthy ways, using tools you wouldn't normally rely on. Plus it gives you an excuse to jump on every lift you see and fly up to the rooftops.

    - Story is weak. Characters are weak.

    - Missions are cool, though. I like the increased variety and challenge of the mission types and the elimination of the stupid "be-stealthy-and-eavesdrop-if-you're-seen-you-desynch"

    - Cover does need to be improved. As others have noted, it's pretty finicky and most aggravating is the fact that you can't go around corners while in cover. I found myself relying more on shooting my phantom blade, using disguises, or cherry bomb lures to facilitate my stealthy operations.

Bottom line, I think this is the future of the AC games going forward, and I don't see that as a bad thing. The biggest suggestion I have is to use your different tools and be stealthy. You'll have 5-star golden gear and be racking up points in club competition in no time.

Let's be honest; the release of AC Unity was a disaster! However once Ubisoft released the 4th patch, the game functions as well as any previous AC title; the gameplay is almost exactly the same as in AC4, and AC3. This game is nothing new. If you're love Assassin's Creed, then you'll enjoy playing Unity, but if you're looking for the "revolutionary new AC" that was promised by Ubisoft, then it's not your game.
The reason I give it a 7 and not 6 is because the game is play-able, and I personally liked how Ubisoft at least did a good job with re-creating the atmosphere of Revolutionary France; especially all the old gothic cathedrals like the Notre Dame, and other French landmarks like the Louvre, right down to the slums. The atmosphere is nice IMO. Even if they missed the mark on improving the game's other features, primarily combat, they're still the same as the past two games and the controls work just the same. Patch No.4 also fixed 99% of all frame-rate issues I was having on PS4.
It's also worth noting that Ubisoft did try to think outside the box a little; the murder mysteries are a nice addition, and some of the main & co-op missions are re-creations of actual events so, if you're a history buff like me, you'll enjoy those little things. Co-op missions can be played solo too, which I liked. All in all, AC Unity was not the game we were hoping for. Now with the free DLC, even a casual AC fan should pick this up at a discount, if only to see for yourself! Finally after its patches, AC Unity is not the broken half-baked game it was when it first came out, that's for sure! It runs fine on PS4, and even if it's not revolutionary, it is AC in The French Revolution! Certainly not a ground-breaking game. At the very least, it's another open-world for AC fans to play in.

Often the parkour can be slightly clumsy but the depth of gameplay and detail in Paris more than makes up for the negatives.

I warmed to Arno eventually and, whilst he isn't as likeable as Kenway or Ezio, he does have his charms and I hope to see more of his story in future AC games.

The lack of 'modern world' levels in this chapter of the AC series means that the underpinning lore doesn't progress much further than it reached in Black Flag and Rogue but this is refreshing. Ubisoft have produced a game you will love whilst leaving the door open for an exciting new chapter in the AC universe.

AC Unity is just an OK game if you play it after all the patches and paid 25 USD for it.
Even after all the fixes and patches you will see glitches everywhere. The quality of the game is just low to be considered a next gen game when you look at the characters and people filling this world. However the world itself is beautiful (the buildings and environment) but it failed to be perfect

However the world itself is beautiful (the buildings and environment) but it failed to be perfect because of the glitch and choppy issues involving characters. Additionally the loading time takes a century. The story is just bad written, a lot of plot holes and assumptions that avoid players to attach to the main character or whatever it was happening. The multi player is just another failure since it takes a lot to find a matching session and you both need to reach the same goal, it is not easy to organize and make it fun to really play it as a team. The really had a good chance to make this a master piece, since they improved the parkour system and stealth system substantially and the European setting is my favorite, even tough I have enjoyed this game more than AC IV. As an overall if you find this game in discount you should give a try, you may have some fun.

    The Bad
    -Combat mechanics are flawed
-The Characters feel empty even though the story is full of blood thirsty personal vendettas
-Customization. In previous games you had all the assassin powers, now you need to buy them, also the micro-tranzactions that fuel the in-game currency needed to obtain gear if you don't want to unlock some fancy pants or a sword/pistol.
-The unlockable content (non-dlc) feels useless, and takes a lot to unlock hence Enigmas
-Only one city. Compared to other AC franchise games, Unity has only one city and 2 regions (without DLC).

    The Ugly

Assassin's Creed Unity is set in one of the best scenarios for an Assassin's Creed game, the French Revolution. A time full of plots, intrigues, treason and social unrest. That being said, let's cut to the chase.

    - In terms of graphics and visuals the game is beautiful. However, even after more than a year from its release, the game suffers from stupid glitches and FPS drops each time you enter a crowded area.

    - Online Features: there are no PvP modes, only PvE. Online missions are, for the most part, like any other mission. Heists require the players to be as stealthy as possible, since being spotted reduces the reward.

    - Main Campaign: the compelling main story provides around 30 missions split in 12 sequences. As usual, each missions will also have multiple optional challenges.

    - Side Quests/Activities: there's just too much to do in ACU. You have Paris Stories (additional quests), Nostradamus Enigmas (riddles), Murder Mysteries (investigations), Helix Rifts (race through an area to collect as many points as possible before the time is off), Social Club Renovations/Missions (additional side quests). On top of all these, you have almost 300 chests, over 100 cockades to collect and a fair share of artifacts to find.

    - Gameplay: compared to Black Flag, I feel the gameplay has suffered a downgrade. You can't whistle, nor move bodies. The stealth component has been reduced to a minimum - blending is never required and avoiding detection is required only once (if you're going for the 100% sync, that is). Furthermore, the "Disguise" skill allows you to instantly camouflage yourself as any character at sight, which makes infiltration a piece of cake (as long as you keep a few feet away from near enemies). Also, it's worth pointing out that Arno's parkour mechanics are oftentimes plainly stupid. He'll hang from the back of a chair, he'll refuse to make simple jumps, he'll ignore your command to throw a smoke bomb while in combat, etc.

    - Weapon variety: you have a fairly decent number of weapons and weapon types (swords, long weapons, heavy weapons, pistols, rifles and guillotine guns).

All in all, ACU is a great game that offers tons of content. It was a great Platinum for my collection, despite some glitches here and there.
