This is the most graphically gorgeous AC game I've ever played. I'm pretty much in awe. I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to play this freaking amazing, amazing game.

It could be the best Assassin's Creed game but unfortunately they messed it up. Lots of bugs, way too long loading screens, poor framerate, cheesy plot without any twists. I just do not know how they managed to create this first ''next-gen'' game, which has huge drops in framerate and these freaking long loading screens... Unity is only above average.

It could be better, but no, it's a bad story and a deception for the entire saga. Next gen starts here? I don't think so.

A flawless story with a couple of messy bugs and glitches, the combat system isn't working properly. 2014 was a bad year for games that should've been delayed until 2015 or beyond and they payed the price. I thought I was going to buy this game, but everything is just a complete waste. Assassin's Creed: Unity should've would've could've been cool at some point, but just stick to Black Flag. Expand

The controls are horrible, they have been completely ruined since Black Flag. The Player slows down constantly when running, sometimes this is because there are people near you, sometimes because you've turned a little, sometimes for no reason. It makes escaping a real pain, and doing any timed mission a nightmare. For some reason enemies no longer known how to climb, so forget running away and climb the nearest building, they'll forget you every time.

The controls are now sticky, meaning the player grabs every surface they're near even if you're not climbing but have been shot, and it you're running past something he'll grab it, but letting go is a real challenge, sometimes you need to use circle, sometimes only a wall eject let's go, if you're a certain height (not high enough to cause fall damage) you'll never let go, again a real problem for timed missions (good luck with The Tournament mission!).

The story is terrible. Definitely the least interesting in the series. The first 5 minutes of the intro, where it gives off a strong Ezio vibe is the best part, but after 5 minutes this feeling is gone, and after that i becomes very boring.

There are four different currencies! Four! Some are fairly redundant such as helix points (you can get about 10000 of these each time you play a helix mission, so just keep replaying it 5-10 times and you've unlimited helix points, no need to buy anything with real cash, despite Ubisoft always nagging you to do so).

This game is so needlessly over complicated. Enemies now suspect you and only you by default, even in crowds. If you so much as see an enemy in the distance they're already coming towards you or calling for you. The combat system changes have completely made combat a pain in the ass. Enemies can now kill you in one hit. If you so much as stand 10 meters near an enemy or walk past one you will be killed. If you hide in a crowd or hiding place, you will be found. This is in my opinion a ploy to make you buy clothes to build up your stealth and health. But I didn't even know clothes had any value other than appearance, this was never told to me during the game. The only way to play this game without rage quitting is to loot every chest as possible, to buy equipment that increases your stealth and health.

Your ammo will always be extremely limited no matter far in the game you progress, you need to buy clothes such as gloves to increase ammo. Do so asap, this isn't explained to you at all.

Sync points! frustrating, need them to be able to lockpick for loot, but cant earn them without lockpicking within co-op missions. If you play this and can't play it co-op then good luck playing it in private as the timers of the missions and the difficulties don't reduce, so you have to do the job of 4 people by yourself. For the most part this isn't a problem but there's about 3-4 missions that really really suck trying to do everything by yourself.

Can't pick up and hide bodies anymore, can't pick up enemies weapons anymore. The story is boring, all side quests are boring: "solve random mysteries", "find random documents, steal random things, tail random people" extremely dull. In fact the whole french revolution angle was extremely poorly done and not interesting, nor really involving the revolution much. The story maybe mentions the revolution 3 times briefly. It doesnt even bother with french accents, half the people sound English, the other half american. The whole premise of French Revolution does't actually amount to anything.

There is no real character arc for the main characters. There is no satisfying ending to the arcs or plot. Honestly the entire main game is poor at best. Which is a shame as france is a beautiful place to play and honestly you have more fun exploring and searching for things than doing the story missions.
Actually the Dead Kings DLC is 100x more interesting and exciting than the main game. The main game has nothing to do with Abstergo, Sages, the First Civilization, nothing to further the plot of the Templars or Assassins, nothing regarding Eden. Whereas the Dead Kings DLC does have some this, plus it resolves in a more interesting ending by far.

This entire game is skipable. But if you do buy it in a sale, don't bother trying to 100% it as there's no real reward, just loot enough chests and earn enough money to buy good clothes for health, earn sync points early in the game to upgrade skills, and speed through the so called plot, then enjoy Dead Kings DLC.

An addition by subtraction was that it wasn't extended by tedious and pointless modern day sequences like AC4 was, so that's a plus for me

What annoyed me however was the removal of competitive multiplayer in favor of co-op missions that i never bothered to play. For a game that had like 20 minutes of credits worth of people working on it why couldn't they have just reused the modes from previous games but with new maps? Surely they could have spared a few dozen people to do this.

Overall an enjoyable game and one I enjoyed more than AC4 (boats were fun for the first 2 hours, not the next 10) and one i'd recommend to AC fans.

While offering a lot of content, those elements start to feel more and more generic towards the end, particularly due to the mediocre story that has a hard time to combine the different missions into a coherent plot that makes the player feel invested in the events.

Fans of the series will still appreciate the game for giving them more of the same, however, it has become clear by now, that a creative break may be in order to bring the series back to its former level.

Unity is a good game that deserves mixed reviews. Most of the people giving this game a 10 decided they were going to like it before playing it, and those giving it a 0 are focused on one or two negative aspects or upset that the game isn’t exactly what they wanted it to be.

Beginning with the negative, let’s look at connectivity issues. The game was plagued with sync issues. This is to be expected (not an excuse) when trying to sync a game, Uplay, AC Initiates, and a companion app all at once. This could have benefited from more testing. However, none of this impacts the bulk of the experience. Running the companion on an ultrabook is a great second screen option for the map alone. There are still issues with chests tied to the app and Initiates properly syncing, but again, this is not a deal breaker by any means.

To be clear, the inclusion of microtransactions to acquire helix credits, which can be used to purchase or upgrade gear, is an obvious cash grab. However, these microtransactions are in NO WAY required to get everything out of the game. Everything you can do with helix credits can be done with normal in-game currency; credits just allow players to save time. And unlike many other games, the normal costs of these items are not so absurdly high that you have to grind for days to get them without buying credits.

Now for the technical issues. Based on the experience of thousands of players, the game certainly needs better optimization, regardless of system. That said, I experienced few issues on PS4. I experienced stuttering and framerate issues only a handful of times. Pop-ins happen but aren’t that noticeable unless you’re looking for them, and patches are making improvements. Only had one significant glitch thus far, and didn’t prevent progress.

The biggest issues with this game that really warrant giving it a lower score, are the story and characters. The overall plot is weak at best, the main character (Arno) is forgettable – along with just about all the others; there just isn’t much of a story being told at all. That said, the side missions are good and well presented, and they provide a good sense of the setting. If only the main plot wasn’t so terribly lackluster.

Now for the good. There is a lot that Unity improves on over past AC games. The parkour (climbing) system has significantly improved. While getting Arno to go where you want still doesn’t always happen, it’s not as frequent and the animations are good. The addition of downward freerun is a step forward for the series. When needing to climb down in a hurry, you no longer have to choose between blindly leaping off a building and slowly dropping from each and every ledge. Simply hold down two buttons and run towards the edge of the building to see Arno skillfully climb down.

The frustrating follow & listen missions from past games have been overhauled. You no longer have to stay so close to the target and mission areas are not packed to the brim with guards. It feels like much less of “which path do the devs think I should take” and more of “I’m a skilled assassin stalking my prey”.

In general, all of the missions are much more open-ended. There are lots of ways to accomplish the objective & while there are still preferred ways of doing things in a mission, they are now optional objectives instead of mandatory steps along the way. More than any other game in the series, Unity allows you to be the kind of assassin you want. The murder mysteries, while not really challenging, are a nice change of pace and include good snippets of story. The crowd missions are satisfying and appear with just the right frequency.

The graphics are impressive. Though not as high quality as Black Flag, this is to be expected given the complexity of the environment. The buildings are meticulously detailed, and the crowds are both large and dynamic. The city feels alive.

Gear variety is better than previous games, letting you choose the equipment that best suits your playstyle. This is echoed in the skill system, which allows you to prioritize which skills you want to unlock, rather than tying you to a preset sequence of progression. Combat is smooth and enjoyable. Arno feels powerful without making things too easy. Line of sight works the way it should, and the AI is good in terms of NPCs looking for you but not being supernatural about knowing your location.

In summary, Unity’s gameplay is solid, with lots of improvements that should be included in future AC games. The setting is superbly realized. Many frustrations seen in past games are reduced. Missions are enjoyable, open-ended, and varied. At the same time, any story or characters that would make this a noteworthy addition to the AC saga are completely absent. And while many of the technical issues are being resolved or relatively minor, their abundance at launch created a negative reaction from which this game will probably never recover.

Keeping it short, if you have played any AC games before and loved combat and stealth, this game is definitely what you want in AC. The story isn't short, and you will find yourself grinding getting F money and Creed Points on the side for customization.

Story itself would have been way more immersive if it wasn't for the Abstergo and Animus storyline on the side, which thankfully doesn't peak into gameplay constantly like other AC games do.

Combat is really fun, and all classes of weapons are all unique and fun to use. Stealth is easy to understand, and fun most of the time.

Assassinations in the story are fun to play, giving you the option of killing everyone in sight or playing stealthy and finding your target first.

What really hurts this game on both PS4 and Xbox One is that the frame rate is constantly dipping in areas of Paris which are very populated, and on certain occasions coming from nowhere.

While I constantly try and tell people that they shouldn't expect much from the annual formula that is Assassins Creed, this time around, for the first time since Assassins Creed 2, I got 100% on the game and finished the free Dead Kings expansion on the side, which was also fun.

I give Assassins Creed: Unity an 8.9/10

The combat would have been a welcome change if the camera weren't so down-right evil and the controls were more responsive but, as it stands, it will not be a rare occurrence for the player to be shot to death by trigger happy enemies that are off screen. The stealth system is half-baked at best - the "cover" system shares the same sticky, unresponsiveness that crops up in the other places of the game. There is no rhyme or reason to when an enemy can see you or not - I've experienced being spotted by an enemy whilst I was crouching behind cover meters away, I've experienced walking up to enemies and them not batting an eye. The changes with the freerunning take some initial getting used to, but even then they don't noticeably improve on the issues familiar to the series.

The regular mainstays of the series are still here. Big, open world to run around and do parkour feats in; lots of collectibles to find; lots of side-quests; lots of stabbing dudes. The graphics are okay but nothing spectacular, even considering the number of characters that can be on the screen. It's all enough to get caught up in the game for a few dozen hours if you want to take care of everything the game has to offer.

There are some major technical issue with the game on PS4 and they are the primary reason for the lowered score. The framerate is locked at 30 fps, which doesn't bother me. What does bother me, however, is how ridiculously unstable it is. Anything from turning the camera around to running through a crowd to climbing a building can cause noticeable frame drops. There are also a number of restart-causing bugs that happen regularly. In my time with Unity I've experienced not being able to speak to key NPCs, getting stuck in walls while climbing up buildings, and even falling through the Earth into nothingness. Yes. I've randomly glitched through the ground whilst playing. The problems are present enough that they make the game feel half-baked and rushed. If I were head of Ubisoft QA, I'd probably be committing seppuku because I honestly don't understand how a game can ship out like this.

That's the major of it. The story is forgettable and skippable, which you'll probably do after the first hour. Ubisoft has abandoned most of the outter-framework story previous games has presented, but oh well.

Unity can still be a wholly enjoyable enjoyable experience, especially if you're an established fan of the series. The tough part is getting past all of the technical issues that refuse to go away.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Following up Black Flag, easily the best game in the Assassin's Creed series, was always going to be a tall order, but Ubisoft seem to have despaired of rising to the challenge, releasing the worst game in the series since its inception with the interesting but painfully repetitive Assassin's Creed. The attempt to diversify free-running to allow one to move down as easily as up is a nice idea, but clumsily executed. You never know if Arno is going to jump to the next roof, make a leap of faith, scale the side of the building he's on, plunge to his death, or simply stumble to a standstill.

Co-op failed more times than I care to note, which is all the more disappointing because many of the stories behind the co-op missions were more interesting than the predictable main plot. Arno is a forgettable Ezio-light, everyone in revolutionary France is British, and the fact that the Assassin Brotherhood has descended into the same staid, stifling bureaucracy as the Templar Order is basically just glossed over. Of much more importance is the fact that Arno. Is. Angry. He's Ezio light in far too many ways, all of them less interesting than Ezio himself.

Easily the most disappointing aspect of their failure is the fact that Unity is, in a word, broken. Many times I've been warned about buggy games and had little to no problems with them upon playing. The only exception here was Batman: Arkham Origins, a thoroughly flawed game of huge potential, but one which found its feet after a few patches and now sits proudly next to its predecessors. This may well be the case with AC's first real stab at the next-gen platforms, but right now, I couldn't be moved to care. Unity is a hot mess descended from a pedigree I've come to expect much more from.

In the opening chapter alone I was hit with no fewer than three massive bugs which forced me to reset my console. Countless times I took aim a soldier from cover, and Arno jumped out when I pulled the trigger, but never actually fired. Cue me getting spotted and finding myself in a desperate fight with every guard in the area.

The loss of the naval warfare is keenly felt, with the game suffering from a stifling lack of variety, and as one of the apparently very small group of people who had always enjoyed the modern day story as much as the historical, I was also disappointed with how little progress was made on that front. My nameless, faceless character (no doubt deliberately nameless and faceless to indicate that we are all now Abstergo's mind slaves or on the verge of becoming such), never sits up or moves about, but is merely fed remote instructions from Rebecah(sp?) and Shawn, who refer to themselves only as Bishop and Deacon. The discovery of the abundance of Precursor DNA among the Sages has led to a desperate race. Abstergo want to harness this DNA as they believe doing so will lead to the Rosetta Stone of understanding the ancient race, and thus, their technology. The Assassins, naturally, want to stop them. Unfortunately, this desperation doesn't come across very well in a couple of scattered video sequences where nobody actually does anything, and the host migration sequences, while interesting breaks from the main story, are over too quick, and again, don't convey much urgency.

I've returned my copy; the first time I've ever brought back an Assassin's Creed game. The rest of the series still sits on my shelves, and there's a good chance I'll play them all again. If the main problem of awful mechanics is fixed, Unity could actually wind up being a very good game, though it will never approach the rip-roaring heights of Black Flag. And when it hits the bargain bins, I might ask around to see if the multiple patches made a difference, as those for Arkham Origins did. If so, I'll thumb my nose at Ubisoft in my own special way, and buy it preowned so they don't see a penny. As for future releases, I've sworn never to buy a Ubisoft game upon release again.

It's been completely stripped down from past entries, all of the useful parts removed. You can no longer take a human shield to dodge bullets. You end up getting shot 90% of the time. The animations during combat have that glitchy stab the air feel, like you miss your intended target and he falls down dead. LAME! The combat frustrates me to no end, and I've played every AC from the beginning. This is BY FAR the worst combat mechanics in the series.

Aside from the combat a lot has improved. Parkour in this entry is awesome and I find myself running along rooftops just for the sheer joy of it. LOVE the customization. The city is an amazing thing to see. They definitely packed Paris with a ton of $hit to do. Most of the technical problems in the game stem from Ubisoft jampacking the city with NPC's. TOTALLY unnecessary. And pretty annoying as well. It makes it almost impossible to run through the streets at times. What was the point? It looks more packed than modern day New York...

All in all I'm having fun with this game but not without A LOT of frustration. Ubisoft has brought the game down a notch since black flag. The next game in the series had better make major changes. I mean near flawless to redeem this mess.

It's a fun sandbox that I enjoyed much more than Watch Dogs. I reccomend playing the campaign through first (try it in French with English subtitles for extra immersion). Then find out which types of side quests you like- I enjoyed the helix games and renovations. Customization is great but you're limited to one character, Arno, who isn't bad. The game is a good 20 hours worth of jumping and sneaking fun. The glitchiness is much less (at least for me) than what others have complained about. The huge amount of NPCs and dynamic action is actually a pretty incredible accomplishment. Also I found the AI to be much better and more apt to the gameplay than others. Coop is not bad, actually works well, but wasn't really my bag. So ultimately, good game. Don't believe the hate or the hype. After 25 hours, it'll get too repetitive and time to move in. Expand

Dreadful, boring rinse and repeat. I love this series of games but I must say this is the worst of the lot. Sure it looks pretty now the bugs have been sorted out but that's it. Franchise fatigue has most definitely set in, time to leave assassin's creed alone now and concentrate on new ip's like watch dogs.

The most satisfying part with this game was today, when I traded it in at a local videogame store to at least get some of my money back.
It's not a catastrophy, it's just frustratingly mediocre, I and I say it with the deepest regret. Maybe next time, Ubisoft? Hm? Maybe?!

It's not like it was in AC and AC3, where Altaïr was with King Richard on or when Connor was directly involved in the Boston Tea Party and when they signed the Decloration of Independence, he was there himself. They helped shape history, unlike Arno who doesn't have the slightest interest in the revolution. We never really get to interact with some of the most famous historical figures either, like Napoleon Bonaparte, Theroígne Mericourt and Marie Antoniette. Napoleon only makes a brief cameo in the story line and a Paris story, Theroígne only appears during a few Paris stories and some co-op misions and Marie Antoniette ONLY appears in a cutscene for one of those co-ops. We NEVER get to interact directly with her at all.

Every single character is very forgettable and very one dimensional. It is painfully obvious that they tried to cater to Ezio fans, by creating his french clone. Everything from his pony-tail, his clothes (at first and in the prison) to his behaviour, where he tries to be charismatic and witty in every situation, but instead of being those things, he becomes the exact opposite. Like a true try-hard. While I won’t exactly say I hate him, I very much dislike him, especially as a protagonist. He’s the least skilled and least likable Assassin ever. Even Elise who is otherwise somewhat of a hot chick, only cares about revenge for her father and uses Arno as her lapdog (man that guy is whipped). All of the villain’s and ESPECIALLY - what is supposed to be - the main baddie, completely fail to make us - the gamers - root against them. They simply do not receive enough screen time to make us know who they are, what they stand for, their motivations/goals and simply care for them at all.

The main story is perhaps my biggest gripe with this entry. It takes heavy inspiration from AC2’s revenge theme, which is already a pretty standard plot in almost every action movie ever. It fails to keep me engaged in it like in previous entries. Even though Black Flag is my least favorite (besides this one), mainly because of it’s uninteresting story - both past and modern day - at least it wasn’t short. If I hadn’t done multiple side quests and co-op missions between the sequences I could’ve been done in less than 10 hours. All the missions get incredibly repetitive after just the 3rd sequence, You KNOW that every sequence will culminate in a pointless assassination of a random templar. All the “twists” like Arno’s dad(s) getting killed and Elise dying was really predictable. The modern day part isn’t even there. Again, you’re a random guy in 1st person, that’s supposed to be “you”, instead this time you never even get to walk around. You briefly interact with a chick assassin named Bishop in some sequences but that’s about it. The MD part is arguably the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the franchise. Many fans such as myself, keep coming back for more, solely because of the MD conflict between the Assassin’s and Templar’s, yet they’ve removed it completely this time, making this a history sim when it shouldn’t be at all. Ubi’s biggest mistake was killing off Desmond, who I loved immensely. IMO they should just bring him back because this whole 1st person, silent and RANDOM protagonist BS is not working out AT ALL! It seems to me that Ubi is afraid to move forward with the core plot, because then they would likely have to end it in a few years and that’s probably why they started with this pointless “you’re the protagonist” $hit, meaning a huge source of their revenue is removed. So sadly, they milk the hell out of this and completely screw up the lore of this once beloved franchise.

The few positive things: I actually kinda liked the murder mysteries. I thought they were fun for a little diversity and I like using my brain when it’s something that doesn’t completely fall out of perspective (like the Enigma mysteries where you have to KNOW the entire map like the back of your hand). And the world is beautifully realized, no doubt about that. The huge crowds, the graphics are very good and the architecture is magnificent. Truly makes it feel like a next-gen game. Sadly, that’s all the positive there is to say about this. I simply can’t believe that they used 3 years to develop this and yet it is so unpolished. So much so that it should just have been cancelled completely instead. I should also warn that the controls are very bad, there are still numerous game breaking bugs and the frame-rate issue which causes your PS4 to overheat during menu sequences still exist. Overall, just don't buy this game unless you're a hardcore AC fan like myself.

This game is not as bad as everyone says it is, though it may seem so from the start. The game is buggy to be sure, clipping through walls and ghosting through citizens roaming the streets is far from unheard of on the journey of Arno the Assassin.

However, the big glaring issue seems to be less about these bugs and the lackluster story and more about Ubisoft not putting enough love and time into their game. This is a game that should have been released in Q1 of next year and not in Q4. Also we have to remember that this is the first time this engine has been used on the new hardware of the PS4 and XBOne, so anyone who didn't expect some issues with the physics needs to recheck their expectations.

The story was OK, it wasn't terrible, but it creates some nice contrast to the previous AC games which I think is reflected in Rogue, which came out at the same time. Previously there have been clear cut lines between who is good and who is evil, but these two games defy those conventions.

Character customization is the best addition to this game and the online co-op is pretty fun. The only motivation I had for doing many of the side stories, particularly the "Young Prince" mission and the "Swiss Stash" mission (both of which were frustratingly difficult), was the wads of cash I would be rewarded upon completion. ₣25,000 for a katana so I can slice through enemies with a swiftness... hold on, let me spend an hour methodically assassinating everyone in a building for this ridiculously huge reward.

Though that does bring me to the combat system. It's trash, they tried to make it better and they just made it frustratingly difficult, riddled with ridiculous one hit kills and an ineffective blocking system. This does promote the use of stealth, though that system is filled with glaring issues as well.

I don't condemn this game, it's OK, but more than that it is a learning opportunity for the folks at Ubi to make an even better AC game the next time around.

Visual: 9/10 [Gorgeous vision of Paris and stunning character models]
Gameplay: 6/10 [New system not executed well, needs to find a middle ground between the old system and the new]
Story: 6.5/10 [It's a story, but it's a bit lackluster and it's nothing to write home about]
Features: 8/10 [Customization and Co-op are shining stars in this game]

    OVERALL: 7.4/10

Assassin's creed unity improves upon some aspects of the series such as more in depth customization and better combat mechanics. The game also has impressive visuals, one of the best looking games made. Unfortunately not the same can be said for the story line. The characters are not made very interesting, and the mission designs are quite boring to be honest.

I shouldn't have to level up to progress in the story.

Because Unity is far from perfect, and it offers very little that is new. Having said that I like it and I haven't experienced any thing like the problems that people are moaning about. You'd think that the future of world peace was dependent on this game's release.

    Stuttering - not encountered any.
Weird combat - it's the same as it's ever been - you might have to press different buttons to do different things but hey it's a game!
Face disappearing - not yet but looking forward to this Hammer Horror moment.
Falling through the world - not encountered this.
Low frame rate - not experienced this - and big deal - I couldn't tell what frame rate this game is running at with my naked eyes. It's a pretty environment and it lives in a convincing way.
Crowd scenes - great. No problems.
Co-op play - done a bit. Not really interested in it in the long run but I haven't had any problems.
Connection to Uplay - working fine. Occassionally drops out but my world hasn't ended as a consequence.

On the whole it's a good game. Not great. Not groundbreaking. But this is Assassins Creed. How many times can you keep rehashing the same consipracy theory plot without it starting to become a bit tired. Maybe Ubisoft need to put this one to bed and do something a bit more original. It is evident pretty early on that ac unity try's to make you take the stealth approach as appose to going in all guns blazing. Which wouldn't be to bad if the stealth was actually fun and worked well. The cover system fails to work for you 80% of the time, detection is ridiculous (even with upgrades equipment) and overall it's just not fun!

Combat, when tackling two or three enemies at a time isn't so bad, though it's not that fun either. But when it comes to anything above that, your most certainly dead! And with nothing left but stealth to rely on, your **** Now I suppose there are moments in which stealth does work, and when it does it's great! But then you have to tackle the issue of finding a suitable route, which is no easy feat!

When it comes to parkour in Ac Unity, it's overall not to bad. It's actually quite fun most of the time. But it isn't with out it's fair share, or more than rather, of issues. But I'm willing to look over them as they don't both me all that much.

Story: The story of the Assassin's Creed games is a pivotal part of the franchise, and I believe it's where the games happen to excel. Though when it comes to Ac Unity, I'm incredible disappointed! Secondary characters are underdeveloped, the modern day sections are entirely pointless at this point, and the plot just isn't interesting! Arno however, happens to be one of the story's only interesting features (that's when he's not talking about redemption that is).

Secondary missions are something fun and new, but not enough for me to forgive the games poor story. At the moment, I can't see a bright future for the story of ac.

CO-OP: To be honest, I couldn't care less at this point, I think I'll go back to AC2

From the very beginning i felt like it was trying to be something similar to Assassin's Creed 2, which in my honest opinion is the best Assassin's Creed game today. But it fails to deliver, it feels copied, cheap, unorganized!

It seems like Ubisoft tried to make the game look good, and then forgetting what the core of a game should be, which is gameplay as any avid gamer knows.

First off there's the FPS problems, now Ubisoft said 30 FPS was their target, which is fine by me considering it's a console game, but i rarely hit 30, heck, i rarely hit 20 FPS, I'm usually at 10-15 FPS. Then there's the glitches, i hop into a haystack, and I'm stuck, having to close the game and open it again, i could go on with the glitches but it's pointless, it's just bad coding and bad priorities.

Now if you ask me, i love the Assassin's Creed series, I've been played since the launch of Assassin's Creed 1, and I've loved every single one of them up until now.

The game has also got a considerable number of new features which, in my opinion, is a healthy addition - these include character customisation and a point/skill levelling system.

    Is it 'unplayable'? No.
Does it have frame rate issues? Slightly, yet I rarely noticed this in my game.

I have given this game a '7' for a number of reasons:
    * The game does have some underlying problems (eg. framerate).
    * The story-line is poor, repetitive (in almost all missions the objective is to assassinate someone in a building through stealth/stealing from someone). Optional objectives are not made clear. It also lacked action and unique characters thus making it hard to follow and boring. Arno's bipolar part-gentleman part-joker feels unnatural and false. To an extent Paris also feels like a city within London due to the voice-acting which tends to encompass 'Posh English' and Cockney.
    * Lacks multi-player which is featured in all other Assassin's Creed games.

In the end, the game is decent and if you are a fan of the series (as I am) then I would suggest buying it. I do not believe the game deserves "4.3" as a user score in any way - this has only been caused by trolls who apparently expected an aeroplane ticket to 18th century Paris. Tough luck.

Overall, I think the gameplay is pretty fun, the story is pretty good, and I've personally experienced minimal bugs/glitches/frame rate issues. However, the controls for climbing buildings and such seem somewhat stiff and do not always respond when you want them to. The fighting seems a little bit clunky, however, I do rather enjoy the sort of fencing style that Arno utilizes. As mentioned earlier, I do really like the story, however, I can't help but feel like it's somewhat rushed. I feel as though Elise's death at the end of the game was completely unnecessary. Basically, what that tells me is that her death is meaningless. I mean sure, I understand they wanted a dramatic ending, but I feel like that was the wrong way of approaching it. Elise's death would have had more of an emotional impact if she was killed off earlier in the game, in my opinion. Expand

I feel like Ubisoft missed a huge opportunity by not focusing on the French Revolution and instead following a pointless love story with a somewhat 'meh' ending. Assassins Creed 3 is an example of revolutions done right in which you played through vital battles and historic moments.

Other than that, this was actually quite a fun game and I'm probably going to come back to it, the story was a disappointment though and Elise just felt like a distraction from all the more interesting stuff in the revolution.

There were so much missed opportunities that can be implemented but I guess Ubisoft were greedy to give a smidt. At least, Dead Kings DLC is free though despite a broken love story that feels too depressing to care about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ignoring the countless bugs of which I had a lot I can without a doubt say that this game is worth your time, the story missions are as interesting as "meh let's wait for DLC" and all the assassins hiding in plain sight thing is not like it used to be. The graphics are amazing though (played this game on a high end gaming laptop on ultra since release date). I had no issues in multiplayer and it was fun free-roaming and doing missions together with other people. I'd say the main problem is that Unity split off to advance the series, but as far as I can tell there are no more horses, carriages, only one story mode mission where you chase a boat that actually moves, no gliders, what makes you an assassin is merely guts to jump into a crowd of heavily armed soldiers with a hidden blade and some kind of one hit tiny crossbow thingy. I will say this in favor of AC Unity. The parkour controls are the best the series has ever had. However every other aspect of the game is a pile of garbage. We'll start with the story. The characters are massive steps backward from those appearing in last year's entry, Black Flag. Now they are simply one-note, with little time to develop on screen. We'll start with the story. The characters are massive steps backward from those appearing in last year's entry, Black Flag. Now they are simply one-note, with little time to develop on screen. The new assassin, for example, is simply a retread of Ezio, but without any meaningful personality. The story is likewise bland, and compared to Assassin's Creed Rogue, released alongside Unity, it seems like no thought was put into it at all. The present day story is now reduced to a handful of cutscenes, and after the surprisingly enjoyable sections from Black Flag, this is a serious letdown.

Gameplay wise, there are some redeeming features, like the level design in the assassination missions. The world isn't anything special, with the exception of the large landmarks, which are undeniably impressive, and make for the most engaging gameplay. And, as mentioned above, the new 'controlled descent' feature is something that fans have wanted since the original. However everything, from the parkour, to the stealth, to the combat especially, feels sluggish and unresponsive. When compared to the Arkham franchise or Shadow of Mordor, both of which use similar controls, it's all pretty basic and uninteresting.

No review of Unity would be complete without mentioning the technical issues. The framerate is bad, hovering at around 20 and dropping often (so much for 'locked at 30fps, huh Ubisoft?). Bugs are also common, and you'll never have a play session without at least one. For example, I have plummeted through the ground into and infinite void, sudden game crashes, characters vanishing and reappearing at random, and had Arno freeze in midair, unable to move, causing me to fail a mission. All of that in a two hour session.

I think that the worst crime of this game, however, is the contempt that the game shows for the player at every turn. Microtransactions, the worst companion app of all time AND signing into two separate Ubisoft accounts are all needed to access everything in the game. Half of the features aren't available yet, patches are rolling in at an extreme speed and nothing works as intended. While this isn't the worst game of all time, the level of disdain that Ubisoft shows to its customers makes me hate this game more than any other on the market, except maybe The Crew. I would prefer this game to have the 'press x to pay respect' QTE from Call of Duty than have a company try to squeeze money out of me at every turn through a broken and un-fun game, especially one that already cost me $100 AUD. A must-avoid for all fans of the series, stick to Black Flag and Rogue for the meantime.

The combat no longer has counterkills and now is based on a levelling system which players and guards have no matter the class. I found Unity to be an amazing experience, both for the storyline and the beautiful level design, and the immersion into the history. There was a lot to do besides the amazing storyline, and the customization of Arno was a great addition. This was actually my favorite game to date, falling only after Assassin's Creed II. I found this game to be a step in the right direction, after Assassin's Creed IV took it in the wrong one. I believe an ASSASSIN game should take place in the city, where there are people to assassinate, not in the ocean, where the only thing you assassinate are fish. the game also adds a level of difficulty that i find enjoyable, and i could actually get behind my assassin and root for him and what he was doing. Now lets start at the beginning, First the story. In the story of ACU we are introduced to Arno, a common a kid who orphaned after his dad died of a murder. He now lives with a family in the upper class. The daughter of the family he lives with is an obvious love interest. The story is not all that interesting, there is no cool plat twist. No character stands out, the only thing it does right is add to the lore of the AC universe. Arno is a pretty flat character. He is charismatic in all the wrong ways. So overall the story is not why you should buy this game. Now the game play, the game-play is greatly refined with a new parkour mechanic allowing to ascend and descend. However I think the descend mechanic needs some work. The parkour is also pretty glitch. While running on rooftops Arno will get stuck jump super far randomly and is generally pretty choppy. The new fighting mechanic is pretty good. It is now more challenging.... However they still throw enemy after enemy after you like in the old games. This is so annoying since combat is harder we cant fight 20 guys at once, however the game doesn't seem to care. Next the AI is pretty, who am I kidding its god awful. In combat the walk around and when they deiced to attack you they do a extremely dumb animation. Its like they growl at you before swinging. And the most annoying thing of all is the guns. The enemies will often just spam using their guns forcing you to get them first, however the controls to doge the gun fire is broken. To dodge a gun shot you have to push the X button however, if you are not near an enemy you cant doge it unless you run behind something. The gun system is horrible they need to redo it. Next lets talk stealth. To put it simply its crap. Mainly due to the enemy placement. The enemies are placed in a way that it is almost impossible to take out anyone without being detected. Unless you use the "phantom blade" which is basically a silenced gun. However you only get like 5 at a time and it costs so much to refill them all. The stealth seems like it was made for a splinter cell game. I say this because without a gun you are screwed. Now lets end this up with the multiplayer. It is odd. It is definitely enjoyable if you get your friends, but without people you now it is not all that fun. The stealth is a lot more enjoyable when you work together but not by much.
    Alright lets end this review.
    Final verdict 5/10
    Positives
    Impressive visuals and world
    New combat
    Decent Parkour
    Negatives
    Bad story
    Clunky gun combat
    Glitchy
    Uneven parkour
    Bad stealth

Only buy this if you are a true AC fan if not it is worth a pass. If you are going to buy it wait for a sale, this game should be priced 15 through 20 bucks.

I bought this game as a history fan fascinated by the French Revolution. The world created (Versailles and Paris) is phenomenal and fully captures the heated atmosphere of the revolution. The visuals for 2014 are exceptional and still looks better than many games in 2018. The story starts strong and Arno (main character) is introduced with an interesting backstory and full of personality. The story and quest design takes a dip around 1/3 of the way in, and all the assassination quests become exactly the same, just lazy and generic writing. The assassins brotherhood itself is pretty pointless, actually restricting Arno and he works much better independently. My main problem with the story is that as someone who loves the history of the Revolution, the story of the game is very Forest Gump; a love story in Paris that just occurs at the same time as the Revolution. Arno never gives his opinions on the revolution and seems to have no interest in anything other than Elise. In comparison to the story and characters of Black Flag, this falls very short.

The parkour aspect is the best in any AC game i've played to this point and the ascending/descending mechanism is very good. However, it works much better in free roam than in quests when your stealthing or trying to get away from soldiers shooting at you. The transition from walking to running is stupidly awkward and there seem to be inconsistent glitches embedded in the parkour system which ruin it. The combat is diabolical - decent but easy stealth, terrible melee swordplay, with a broken counter system and impossible to fight multiple people at once because whilst fighting one of them, the others just stand back and shoot you. Not very practical... Also the microtransactions hehe not good

When you inevitably get caught because you can't detach yourself from a sofa or a 2x4 on the ground, you'll be constantly bombarded by enemies that shoot you with pinpoint accuracy from every single direction all at once, and if you try to interrupt them with a sword swing, they'll just fire immediately instead of after 5 seconds. Enemies attack you all at once now so you'll most of the time end up in an endless parry loop until one enemy disables your circle button and forces you to get hit for no reason. If you try to run away from them you'll end up falling victim to the parkour that got you caught in the first place, and you'll attach yourself to a nearby wall and start to climb up with no prompting whatsoever and you'll be hanging there on the wall in convenient gun range and you'll immediately be shot to death by every single guard in Paris and then your lifeless body will fall to the ground and ragdoll all over the place and clip into a wall before falling through the map and then the game will crash and corrupt your save data and then light your PS4 on fire and makes it shoot melted plastic at your face from the disc drive.

This game is pure trash and successfully killed the Assassin's Creed series single-handedly. Even putting aside the whole broken release fiasco, this game is completely trash even when it's working as intended. It's bad. It's explosively apocalyptically bad and nobody should buy it or any future title in the series until Ubisoft figures out how to make games and not tests of anger and frustration.

Yes, in 2021 there are no bugs left, but I remember the game on release in 2014). Unfortunately, the theme of the French Revolution was not revealed, it is actually happening somewhere in the background, and the confrontation of the orders takes place somewhere in the back of the plot. In general, Unity could be rated 7/10, but balance kills. Also, the attempt to promote donate in the game for $60 is simply disgusting. A game with a huge potential that Ubisoft could not realize, and most mechanics earned only in Syndicate. Expand

The story is formulaic in parts but it has some interesting ideas and missions that were enjoyable. The multiplayer component is handled in a very meh way, seems more put there just because corporate mandate than truly creative direction, but for a couple of missions wasn't that bad. And in obvious fashion for a Ubisoft game, it has so much content, but a lot of it is repetitive or not worth the time. In conclusion, I enjoyed my time in paris, but is not one that I wanted to prolongue more than move on with the next adventure. If you like the series, give it a go at a low price. Expand

Unfortunately the Multiplayer is no longer in the game, but there is this Coop, which is really cool to be honest. Besides that the story is really nice packed up and the optic is stunning. In my opinion one of the best AC-Games.

But...There are quite a few cons, I will get the petty one out of the way first was the accents, now why are French people talking with a posh English accent? The thing that makes AC games incredible are the accents sure they all speak English when they are not a lot of the times, because of the English talking target audience, but I thought that was very confusing they sounded more English than the English people in Syndicate set in London lol, the gameplay to me wasn't great, sure stealth has had an upgrade but it felt to awkward most of the time, and the biggest con...Yes BUGS there was so many bugs in that game it was frustrating, the story was interesting did feel very AC like more so than Syndicate, but the Bugs and much of the gameplay was a let down for me, but still overall enjoyable. Assassin's Creed Unity is the reason why the Assassin's Creed franchise is now what it is. Syndicate (the following title) will try to fix what the rocky and glitchy launch of Assassin's Creed Unity created, but the backlash from the public was too strong.

It aims to change a lot of things from the previous AC games, but at the same time it doesn't want to do so.
The toughest game of the series, where you will be SERIOUSLY forced to play stealthily, not sure if for the clunky controls compared to the previous titles or because it is designed to be tougher, this game seem a bit more realistic compared to other AC games.
The climbing mechanics especially, are among the best looking in the series, but glitches are still present to this day and the mechanics feel outdated at best even if it's a fairly recent game.
The world is repetitive, and the multiplayer is very, very bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally picked this game up to try it after reading that Ubisoft had actually done enough patches that the game was mostly playable without running into grotesque looking NPCs or falling through the Earth. The game itself is indeed playable, I finished the whole story but wow was it a lackluster experience. If you're here looking to be immersed in history like we were during every AC game prior, you're going to be severely disappointed. Arno exists during the French Revolution, yes, but he lives completely apart from it. And it's like he's completely oblivious to the fact that a revolution is even occurring. You'll hear things once and awhile, like the storming of the Bastille (you literally are jumping off the fortress when the people are about to come through), and sometimes see things; King Louis got executed (the closest you got to being near history) and you briefly meet Napoleon (probably the best part of the game albeit too short). You won't walk away from this game feeling as though you learned anything about this piece of history, you'll be lucky if you understand who the names of people that are literally just tossed at you or thrown into your codex actually represent. Indeed, half of them aren't even close to what their real-life counterpart was like.

Onto gameplay, you may not run into people with missing faces but you sure are going to get your fill of other glitches. You'll find yourself falling off many roofs that in any other game the character would have been grabbing on to stop themselves from falling, not here, the whole grab ability is nonexistent, I mean you're lucky to properly climb a building in some sort of fluid motion, good luck going down in some sort of climbing fashion. Arno cannot climb into a window fluidly, you will be climbing all around that window trying to hit the trigger when it appears. Some of the co-op challenges can be completed on your own, but most of the 5-star ones need other people to play with you, but good luck finding anyone to do those with. A particular co-op mission in which you finish your army training by having to climb and jump to collect flags, you can drop waist deep into the ground and get stuck. People actually crowded around Arno and stared, as though they were mocking the fact that I had apparently found a quicksand pit. The blood effects are sometimes horrifying. Particularly during story missions after you just killed a couple guards and go to talk to the NPC objective, Arno will turn around his whole face just soaked in dark blood, as though he's a mass murderer. It's a terrifying sight to behold. Indeed, one part was with Elise and Arno said something about their previous escapade not having as much blood, in which he once again was drenched in it.

For the story itself, once you discover that Elise is a Templar, you would think that would play a huge role in the story but it has no gravitas to the story at all. in fact, for the first quarter of the game she says you murdered her father and disappears to god knows where. And when she finally does return, she perfects the line of 'Let's split up.' Every mission the two of you split up and you're once more doing things on your own. If you couldn't figure out how to add meat to the character then why even bother having her? Speaking of having little meat to the character, how about Arno himself? He could've been a fascinating character. The whole Assassin/Templar confliction in regards to his father is murdered by a Templar and his adoptive father is a Templar murdered by a renegade Templar. He's searching for his adoptive father's murderer (which makes him oblivious to the whole French Revolution thing) but it's just like Point A to Point B and it's just shallow. And let's talk about how Arno joined the Assassins, he gets thrown in the Bastille and just happens to meet this guy who's an Assassin and knew Arno's father? And in an undefined amount of time (way too short to be any sort of competent Assassin) after training with a wooden broomstick? you're ready to give your life to the Brotherhood and taking on complicated missions. Also, stare at this wall Arno, look you've got Eagle Vision! (Eagle vision that must now recharge as well) And you know you did your story wrong when upon meeting this guy, Bellec, you instantly know he's gonna turn against you later and you're going to have to kill him. Oh, Arno also joins the Brotherhood by saying he wants revenge for his adoptive father's killer, literally says that's the only reason he's here and later on, the Council says they believe revenge is the only thing on Arno's mind. Uh duh? He straight up told you that? The best part was that Arno was basically just using the Assassin Brotherhood for his own ends.

I could write a book about how disappointing this game was. The worst part was that it could have been great but Ubisoft doesn't care about great games, they just want as much money as fast as possible with little work.

The game is inseparably linked to micro-transactions and the E-store, meaning that if you do not pay for the best gear, you will not feel like an assassin and more like a guy bumbling around with enemies who can hear your every move and spot you from across rooftops with ease. It just goes to show that the gear with the best sneak ratings are the ones that are put behind pay walls.

Story is okay but nothing spectacular. Forgettable in the long-run.

Ubisoft rushed this game out and it shows. Aside from the general bugs which they eventually fixed here are some of its problems.

    1) The city is virtually static. Nothing moves. Huge crowds are rooted to the spot waving their arms forever. There is no day or night cycle. 2) The parkour controls are horribly frustrating. It's too easy to become stuck on a fence or a ledge especially

    2) The parkour controls are horribly frustrating. It's too easy to become stuck on a fence or a ledge especially when trying to go through windows.
    3) The enemy AI borders on brain dead - if you alert the enemy they bum rush your last location and then stand around like idiots before resuming their routines.
    4) There is no way to whistle / attract an enemy from a hidden location or cover.
    5) The there are virtually no horses in the game. None you can ride, none in the streets apart from one for a fast travel location. Think how ridiculous that is for the period.
    6) No moving boats either except for a few on rails. Think how ridiculous that is too.
    7) Anachronisms - the game was lauded for recreating Notre Dame cathedral but medieval spire had been dismantled at the time because it was close to toppling over. I bet much of the architecture in the game reflects later restoration efforts.
    8) Perfunctory skill tree. Not only is it annoyingly bare, it's a pain to navigate through the menu.

This game's successor Syndicate improved on a lot of these things, especially efforts to make the city come alive although it took Origins / Odyssey to get the series properly back on track.
