It's a really great game from my experience, the writing is really good, the character designs are well thought out, and the best detail is the routes. I have not seen a game this great in my life, you need see the story for yourself and not look at spoilers if you want the best experience.

My favorite is Undertale Bits and Pieces. It gives the game better graphics, better music, and some new features. The music is great, the characters are great, the story is beyond perfect, but if you want to know the story of this game completely, you should definitely look at its videos and investigate its mysteries. Undertale gives you what you want from a story rpg in a great way. Especially the little jokes made in the game It organizes the atmosphere, not only in a serious environment, but really throws you into all kinds of people of a city, but sometimes it gives action and reminds you that the environment you are in is not very safe. It has countless features that are not explained in a way that reminds me of it as the best game of 2015. If we sum all these up, my Undertale a score is definitely 10/10. Expand

    My Undertale review

    Some personal backstory
    -------------------------------------
Undertale is my favorite game of all time, its an easy 10/10 for me but that was obvious, I'm here to talk about why this is the game that changed my life and showed me my new passion.
I bought Undertale after I heard from a friend it was good, back then I didn't know much about the game but decided to buy it to experience a "good game" since back then all I played were small mobile games.
To my absolute shock the game was very nicely presented right from the start, I played it and was Immediately hooked into it, fast forward a month later and I finished the game for the first time.
Only in that moment I realized how much a good story and some loveable characters can put you through.
Since then I did the pacifist route and that was the first and currently only time I ever cried at a video game, the feeling I felt when I saw the ending was so heartwarming and it when I felt it I knew that it is my favorite game.

    The game itself
    -----------------------
The game has a very nice earth-bound like art style and some very good yet simple sprites, you can tell what is a character's personality purely from 1 of its sprites, and the backgrounds are incredible.

The music of this game is actually stunning! there are so many beautiful, relaxing, upbeat, exciting and action filled tracks! Toby fox did an incredible work with every single one!

The story was the thing that brought it all together. The characters, the plot itself, the hilarious moments, the sadness, the love and the determination I felt going through the underground were indescribable. This game is worth playing purely for the story itself.

if I didn't make it obvious, this game is a 10/10 I wish I could give it a higher number and I hope to make a very deep analysis video on this in the future but for now, go buy it.
    Thank you toby fox

    ÖN SÖZ

Bu oyunu kaçıncı kez bitirdiğimi inanın bilmiyorum. Tabi hep korsan oynadım ilk defa satın alıyorum çünkü buna değer. Her seferinde müzikleri ile, atmosferi ile beni kendine bağlıyor.

    ATMOSFER

Eğlenceli karakterleri, yer yer güldüren diyalogları... Oynanış her boss savaşında değiştiğinden hiç sıkmıyor.

Oynanış mekanikleri her canavarın kendine has saldırıları olmasından dolayı hiç sıkmıyor ve asla kendinizi OP hissetmiyorsunuz.

Aside from the 1001t Chrono Trigger clone, there where a lot of games coming from this which had really interesting and intriguing concepts that wheren't seen in professional game development just because no one could think of such a concept or set of mechanics could work in a commercial game.

I feel like Undertale is such a game, while nothing entirely new it presents a fresh set of mechanics and ties them together in a unique way while telling a story that's compfortable somewhere between Earthbound and My Little Pony. And let's be entirely honest here, if someone had asked be if that could work out, i would had lughed at him then got a cup of tea to spat it in the persons face and then laughed some more. But in the end, Undertale turned out to remain in my personal Top list of RPGs right next to Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore. And that's quite something to archive out of nowhere.

Undertale can give you quite a few of different experiences. It can either be a joyful comedy or get dark pretty fast. If you can get over the retro graphics and you're into the things mentioned above, then this game might be for you.

With that said, I have soooo many issues with it and despite the fact that I understand why this game is good, in my opinion, this was the most boring game I've ever played in 2015. I couldn't get past the third boss for how mind numbingly boring it was, and how the morality "system" is so utterly and insanely broken and flawed, that I just couldn't keep playing. It's definitely one of those games where you either love it or hate it. Guess which side I am?

But first things first: if people love this game there must be reasons and there ARE reasons: the writing is top notch, the music is BRILLIANT and SUPERB (seriously, I hate the game but I constantly listen to its music) and the gameplay is varied and enjoyable (I guess?). The game is story based and so you'll end up following it in order to finish it, rather than playing it for the gameplay. If I have to pick a real flaw it would be its length: you can finish it the first time in about 6 hours...but it's one of those games that forces you to restart at least once in order to get the true ending, "because that's good development sign"

Jokes aside, I honestly have no issue with its technical aspect: it's fantastic, and it has no real issues with almost anything...but then why do I hate this game so much?

It's simple: the game itself is, in a very general way of speaking, a "teaching game" of how "killing is bad" and "doing the right thing is good" and that's a very rough way of describing it. There is more to it, but the game will essentially punish you for doing any evil things and reward you for doing good things. There is a neutral ending, yes, but it's still the same thing.

I'm sorry, I heard this game was supposed to be SO advanced in terms of morality, but all I'm seeing is a dumbed down version of Mass Effect all of those morality system we have so far: I really don't feel invested on being good or evil, because being evil automatically locks you from the good ending WITHOUT ANY WAYS OF REDEEMING YOURSELF. In addition, I found the characters extremely annoying and hard to care about, I wished I could kill them...but if I kill even one of them, I get the bad ending so what's the point?

And that's also sad because the fighting is actually good: everytime you get to fight, you have the chance to avoid incoming damage by actually avoiding the enemy attacks, which is a great thing! However, if you decide to go for pacifist, you won't gain exp and levels and will be stuck at lvl 1...i-isn't that so much fun? y-y-y-yay...yay....

But I understand all of this: the game is all about to be rewarded for doing the good things, and being punished for the bad things...but I'm sorry we all know that this is not true: sometimes you have to act bad for achieving the good, and being good will often lead you "to the bad ending". That's not a theory: it's a life fact, it's a thing that happens all the time and that's why this game really bothers me.

Plus, I don't need a game to tell me that killing is bad and Undertale, on this part, was treating me like an idiot.

So despite the rant, I highly recommend this game...because it's good, it's NOT FOR ME but I can see why it's good for many others: it's detailed, it's filled with passion and has nothing terrible going on. But it might or might not bother you about its message and story parts, which really discouraged me to get through the true ending and because I honestly didn't care a single bit about its character: they were boring, and if I tried to act differently than "goodie goodie", I'd get a slap for being "evily evil".

On this morality regard, I just played better games...and overall, better rpgs.

For a game of such simplistic graphical style, I am surprised it managed to get any light today, but it seems people have played it and it's moving through word of mouth. Some of the reviews here seem to be from people who have never played games in this style before, which is fine, it definately will not catch for everyone, and is very much a nod to classic RPG's. If you are expecting the wonderful world of the Witcher 3, and the complex combat mechanics of Mass Effect, then look elsewhere. This is an adventure to be had when you want to chill out.

It is inspiring to see that a game of this nature can still rub shoulders with the AAA massive budget extravaganza's that are all too commonplace these days.

    CONTROL/MECHANICS = 9
I do not like Role-Playing Games. Walking Simulator games are validly criticized for having all the interactivity of pressing the "Play" button on a DVD, an experience that could be faithfully recreated by watching a full-length playthrough on Youtube (with branching extra Youtube videos to click on if you make alternate choices in the game). By that standard, RPG's are sequences of Youtube videos where you must roll dice to see if you get to watch the next video or must restart and roll again. All of the "gameplay" is accomplished internally by the RPG's random number generator, your nigh-omnipotent gaming PC wasted rendering what is essentially a card game with a coat of paint over it. I remember playing Final Fantasy on the original NES and thinking that the lack of gameplay was a concession to the limitations of the hardware against rendering more action, and that the RPG style of game would die out in future generations, and to this day I still can't believe I was wrong about that.
Fortunately, Undertale is not an RPG. The core gameplay is moving your character's heart icon out of the way of enemy attacks, like a Bullet Hell shooter where you can't shoot back, to avoid taking damage. Cleverly, each enemy type has different but character-specific attack patterns to learn and adapt to.
In between each defense, you have the option of either attacking or talking to the enemy. Talking is kind of like a conversation puzzle where you try and figure out which of the options is having the right effect, until the enemy is willing to surrender on request.
Attacking is, frankly, disappointing, the same timer minigame every time, pressing "Z" when the line crosses the exact center, like the field goal mechanic in "NFL Blitz 2001". You'll try it a few times, then give up because the conversation tactic is more interesting. Even the Mario RPG series had several attack patterns you could try.
There are also a few puzzles in the overworld which are nice distractions.

    PRESENTATION = 7
The game is rendered in NES-style graphics, with references to alot of games I never played (again, not an RPG fan). It works, but it would have worked better with modern graphics. There are 2D physics in some of the puzzles.
The plot is really excellent, very self-aware and genuinely cognizant of the failings of similar types of games (i.e., it mocks tutorials sort of like "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon"). Disappointingly, and annoyingly, none of the dialogue is voiced. This game was made in 2015, not 1985, and “homage” only goes so far in excusing the failures of having an insufficient development budget.

    DESIGN = 7
The game is linear, but stays engaging throughout its 6 hour runtime, largely because the enemy attack patterns changed, but also because I could never quite predict what would happen next.
Attacking enemies, however, suffers from the major flaw that if you befriend enemies through conversation, you only get money to buy healing items; but to keep attacking the progressively higher-level enemies without missing, you need to level up, which can only be done through the violent option. So you can't switch back and forth, which inevitably funnels you towards the talking option and the nonviolent ending.
But, overall, Undertale earns its 9 for staying fun and providing a unique experience with entertaining dialogue. It might have gotten a perfect 10 if it hadn’t chained its presentation to the 1980s and if there were more minigames for attacking the enemies.

So I played the game and the strangest thing happened. I found myself liking my little terrible style kid protagonist. I liked the enemies. I liked the characters. The game charmed me and usually a large part of a games charm is it's graphical style. This game charmed me solely with its personality. Great writting, great inventive use of interacting with the world, and with so little graphics the game is able to convey emotion and tone so well it amazes me.

Gameplay wise it plays like a jrpg except when an enemy attacks you have a little 5 second mini game that allows you to dodge it and the mini games change a lot never becoming stagnant and predictable. You also can talk to your enemies down from fighting. You can run the game through without killing anybody and I suggest you do actually because the characters are so great and there is so much to see with them alive. There are puzzles which really are just a way of slowing your progression down a tad bit to extend the game.

I highly recommend this game. I honestly thought this game would be another critically hyped game that is good not great but due to it's uniqueness gets more praise than it deserves. This is not one of those games. It is truly a masterpiece of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a bit behind on the times in reviewing this, I know. But I honestly loved this game. I thought what it did with what little it had was very impressive. The story was entertaining and I can't stop listening to the amazing music. Some people are hating on the graphics but I honestly found it very impressive how far the creator was able to go with them. Graphics don't make a game. Story, character, and heart (heh) make a game, which Undertale has plenty of. Regardless, I can't give it a perfect score. Why? There are a few reasons.

I feel like the story needed to be fleshed out a little bit more. According to a walkthrough I read only after completing the game, if you backtrack all the way back to the VERY beginning, you'll be able to talk to Asriel to get more background story "that may be necessary to fully understand the story". Important plot points shouldn't be held back in secret areas like this. The first human was a pretty important detail that needed to be explained further in the main game. Well-hidden areas or conversations are for side details or amusing Easter eggs, not main plot threads. Not only that, but I really would have liked a bit more detail on some of the main characters as well, but that's just a nitpick. Still, what we got was mostly pretty clear, so I wouldn't take away too many points for this.

Also, the combat system is not especially my cup of tea. I'm not personally great at bullet-hell kinds of games, so I felt like that kind of held me back from fully enjoying the game because the combat system often felt more frustrating than I feel it needed to. But that may be just me. Not everyone can be good at every kind of game, after all.

Finally, while I fully enjoyed the differences in morality between killing and sparing creatures, and I feel it made for an incredible difference in dynamic, I feel like the all-or-nothing route was a little bit... excessive? I mean, I don't feel like anyone could really fault a child for fighting a strange creature back when it was hurling attacks at him. However, the extent to which they basically treat you like Hitler after killing almost anything in this game is a little much. As I said, I really do enjoy the game and its different paths, but it REALLY is a little on the nose.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even with these few small criticisms. If you can appreciate the game for what it is without getting hung-up on the graphics or the peculiar combat system, I think there's really something to appreciate here.

Mother). That series's cult following has spawned quite a few projects inspired by it, and Undertale is the latest in that club. What sets this particular title apart, however, is that it has loads of original ideas thrown in the mix, providing an experience that is honestly unlike anything I've ever played. A mere clone this is not.

The world of Undertale is characterized by a struggle between humans and monsters. Humans, possessing stronger souls, won the war and confined the monsters to the underground. You play as a human child who inadvertently fell through a hole, finding himself stranded on monster land. From there you'll encounter a host of quirky characters in your quest to get back to the surface, experiencing some pretty great writing along the way. The musical score is also worth mentioning, as it's a superb collection of intensely hummable chiptunes.

What makes Undertale truly unique is how it allows you leeway on how you want to go about the adventure. Every single battle you enter, from random encounters to boss fights, can be solved through non-violent means (some of which further showcase the funny writing). Deciding whether to engage in combat with any given foe can have big consequences on the storyline, too, including future interactions with new characters. If you do choose to battle, though, you'll be treated to several different real-time, minigame-like sequences that make the whole process an absolute blast.

At around five hours from beginning to end, Undertale is short as far as RPGs go. This means, however, that the prospect of doing additional playthroughs, making different decisions along the way, becomes a lot more palatable. Right after I was done with the completely mind-blowing final boss fight, I immediately rebooted the game to start over, which really is a testament to how interesting the world and lore in the game are.

Undertale's main flaw, in my eyes, is how sometimes the storytelling takes away from the challenge. Often you'll be faced with a seemingly awesome puzzle, only to soon realize you'll never even get to solve it, all for the sake of a punchline. Other sections are so heavy in storytelling that gameplay end up all but absent, save from button presses to switch from a block of text to the next. It helps that, like in Earthbound titles, the writing has a pretty great mixture of comedy and poignancy, with doses of plain weirdness thrown in, which in turn makes you care enough about the characters that the extended dialogue sections aren't a chore to go through.

My main impression after finishing the game twice over is that the hype is certainly justified, as Undertale is a game that won't be easily forgotten by those who play it. Even if you're not that big on RPGs, there are enough quirks and new genuinely good ideas on display that just maybe you'll find yourself as enthralled by this curious little title as most people seem to have gotten.

The soundtrack is so good, even with such low quality. Where I heard Quiet Water the first time, I stopped playing, wow.

But there are 2 big weaknesses: First of all, the gameplay is too simple. The minigames for attacking and defending are great ideas and there are many abbreviations with nice ideas, but still there should be more complex elements in the whole game. I guess the jrpg system is the problem. The many dialogs and long paths were annoying also. Yes, sometimes I had troubles to motivate to continue to play because of that, especially in the end. So for sure I didnt want to play this game again to sse the other endings.
And second: The graphic is about 30 years old. Where is the problem to implement a graphic for example like in Secret of Mana?

Overall: -> There are 2 elements, that are such extremely high level, on art level. But 2 elements are destroying so much.

    Decent world building

    Determination

But in the long run, for all the appreciation I can give this game, I fear it will not survive the hype. Its content is a little too short and its characters' charm, while very appreciable for the length of the game, would probably not survive a much longer game. They're not shallow, but they're clearly centered around their own personality tropes. Sans is the only one I think could survive a longer game since he keeps an aura of mystery. But Papyrus, Undyne, Toriel, Mettaton, they were all very well-concentrated characters, in the sense that each of their story arcs lasts about an hour or less and that they all give all that their personality can give for that length of time. But for longer, I don't think they'd stay interesting or all that fun for long.

The semi-meh gameplay doesn't really harm the game since it's at least a good deal challenging at the start, but it's nowhere near great. As for the visuals, they're simply ass. I find no redeeming qualities in it, not even the "retro" feel, and the animation work is particularly weak, except for the bosses where they indeed have a lot of personality.

Still, with a great music and a cast that did make me laugh and cry quite a lot, Undertale is a magnificent little piece of indie gaming. And even if you kick out the "indie" aspect, it's endearing enough and worked enough to make a lot of gamers reflect on gaming and enjoy a new style of gameplay and storytelling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I shall preface this review with "I DON'T EVEN LIKE RPGS." Keep that it mind. Undertale is frankly a one-of-a-kind experience. Its storytelling is powerful and the paper-thinness of the fourth wall is amazingly creative. You'll grow to know and understand each and every character in the game (my favourite being Mettaton, as yours should be too) as you progress. For replay value, the game can be played two different ways, each of which has its own challenges. You can decide to NOT kill any monster you come across, which requires some outside thinking to end each conflict peacefully, or you can decide to go down the Genocide route which actually showcases the game's characters at their best - y'know, as they all join together to try to stop you killing the entire world, you monster. Overall, it's worth playing the game to see BOTH of these experiences - the Genocide ending gives fantastic battles, the most epic tracks in the OST and a subtle "TAKE THAT, **** at streamers (invaluable, really) while the Pacifist ending is the more... stomachable route with many genuinely funny moments and... a skeleton-dating sim. A brilliant and engaging tale that keeps surprising! The enemies are fun and varied and the game even breaks the 4th wall. Really unique and punny! The combat is simplistic but fun but might put some people off

This is the most immersive game i played in a long time and it looks like a snes/nes game.
If there ever was a shining example, of the fact that games dont need impressive grafics, or famous voice actors, and an orchestral Hollywood score to make you feel something, and care about imaginary characters, than this is it.

UNDERTALE is astonishing. The graphics may not be the most advanced or visually pleasing, but the story is developed in such an amazing way. You can tell that the creator of Undertale put a lot of thought into each character's development rather than form them in some "just another character to fill in the space" kind-of-way.

I think that's what hits the players the most. It's the story. The past, the present, and the future all tie into this game. And another well-planned factor is that your own life feels impacted by the story. UNDERTALE is not a game in which you beat the story, and forget about it soon after. You will be so moved by some of the dialogue and backgrounds, that maybe you will change after experiencing this game.

Not to mention, the soundtrack of this game is beautiful. It strengthens the story by a mile. (Without reading the comment section, search up Reunited or ASGORE if you'd like. A little spoilery, but it is some of the best soundtracks in my opinion.)

If you want to play this game, don't wiki up the plot or any of the characters. Just see what happens as you play it yourself. It's worth it.

And don't believe the critics that say this game is for young children. In no way is it suitable, because there are hints of dark and sinister themes. But don't let this scare you. UNDERTALE also has elements of adorable, dorky, and happy themes.

Hope your adventure is filled with DETERMINATION.

A fantastic game with a well-written plot that seamlessly blends story and gameplay together. While the presentation may seem a bit basic, it hides a deep and emotional story full of memorable characters and set-pieces. Oh, and the soundtrack is effing great as well.

Undertale is an RPG/Bullet Hell hybrid, but make no mistake, it's all about the story. At the heart of Undertale is a choice system revolving around killing or sparing the enemies you fight. I really like the idea behind this system, but unfortunately it doesn't ever culminate in a moment where I really don't know which option to choose (Unlike its more adult counterpart, LISA.) But past this, it has some of the best characters in a game to date, and the story tackles themes you'd never expect from this kind of game. The gameplay as well is wonderful, it changes up throughout the game, and each time it provides a unique way to explore the game's battle system. The soundtrack is really wonderful as well, and it's interesting to see motifs tie back into each other throughout the game. It's very difficult to describe a lot of the specifics of this game without spoiling them, but take my word when I say it's worth every cent of it's $9.99 price tag, and then some. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game! It takes real, I mean REAL talent to even get something like a 9 on my list. Yes, I know, I have Minecraft, Super Mario Maker, at the time of this review, a 9 as well, and The Incredibles at a 10, but that doesn't matter, what matters now is the game.

I came into this game blind with no expectations whatsoever. Now, just to warn you, I have only fully played through the game once. I have attempted to replay it, but I decided not to finish it because the dialogue wasn't changed enough in the other endings enough to really give it that much replay value TO ME that is which is why I don't consider that a flaw because the replay value in this game is optional, according to the player.

The game is not without it's flaws. The weird looking little boy that always praised Undyne needed more character depth and a less abrupt finish to his existence in the game. I always felt that he could have been used as a turning pont in any of the endings and was cast out as nothing. Another thing that was wrong were the blue signs on the wall (especially during the Undyne arc) that told you about the history of humans and monsters that was either: told at the intro, or told by characters, especially toward the end. There are also certain treasures and secrets that are so obscure, that you have no motivation to find out any information about them. Especially at the beginning of the game, there are certain hints from signs or characters about a random statement that I expected to be remembered for an oncoming puzzle, but I got a little angry when they just turned out to me meaningless jokes most of the time.

On the contrary, there are soooooooo many pros in the game. The humor was great and unique for an RPG. Storytelling was fantastic, I was enticed in every single moment offered at me. The CHARACTERS, the characters were SO well done. I liked something about every character in the game, an accomplishment not many can pull off. Some people found the gameplay boring and uninspired, but I didn't. I loved the gameplay, it was unique and so fun that I kept playing against the same bosses over and over again, even when they take 10 tries to beat (Asgore, I'm looking at you). The music is what drove the game inside the game. It made the atmosphere and the OST was PHENOMENAL. It either made me somber, nostalgic, or pumped at the right moments, possibly the best soundtrack of the decade. With that being said, the best thing about the game had to do with me in reality.

I got the neutral ending of the game. Not that that mattered anyways, I felt like a shameless/selfish monster when I was through with my first playthrough.

I got the neutral ending only because I didn't kill the gelatin creatures, the Whimsuns, or Asgore. THAT'S IT. That means I killed Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, Muffet, and everyone else. The first three were REALLY regretful, especially Papyrus. I found out he was innocent when his death was just, like his life, a joke, and it hit me harder than for most players. Anyways, when I decided to spare Asgore, I thought all of the killing I did could somehow be forgiven by Sans and especially Alphys (Favorite character of the game, I had a really odd crush on her by the end). BUT NOPE, all hope for anything dies out, and you don't really know what happens to your character, but I didn't care about my character anymore because I hated him/myself.

That's why I praise this game so much in that aspect; it's to give you a strong feeling of yourself. Doesn't matter what feeling, but something that makes you alive. Not many video games claim that achievement.

It's extremely linear and although your choices are recorded by the game, honestly there just isn't that many choices you can actually make, its more like one choice over and over again. Because of these things, as a whole the game is much more like 'one shot' by Mathew Velasquez and NightMargin than earthbound. Which isn't bad. One shot was great and if you liked that game I would recommend this game or vice-versa.

I would just agree that this game is similar to earthbound in more of an Easter egg way, then anything else . However, you have to consider, earthbound, was a fully staffed, and much larger game. Which is all the more reason to buy this game and support Toby. Unlike soooo many kickstart games that are ridiculously bad or never even finished. I think Toby delivered a solid enough game to give me hope. This game is not an epic adventure, its more like a fun romp in a very small city. But if you enjoy it for what it is, it is fun enough. And who knows, Undertale 2, or whatever is next, could be spectacular.

What a fantastic, magical little game. My only real complaint is that it's a shorter than I would have liked, and while the game may not look like much, its visual design and soundtrack are lovely. (Either way, I came of age around 94-99, and had limited access to 8, 16, and 32-bit games at the time, so less lustrous graphics aren't an immediate turn-off for me.) The battles, such as they are, combine some of my favorite features of both the Mother and Shin Megami games (chatting, rather than just immediately brawling, with humorously designed weirdos and outcasts).

The game's key selling point is its gentle kindheartedness. It has a sort of quirky sentimentality that it earns through your interactions with the bizarre denizens of the game world, but which is also buffeted by the beautiful soundtrack and soft, simple visuals. There is also the general goofiness, which I wouldn't say is side-splitting hilarity, but which made me smile and just generally feel good. I'd recommend this game to fans of Studio Ghibli and the Mother series, but try it yourself of course (as with anything, liking one does not necessitate liking the others). For what it's worth, I thought this game was touching, memorable, and a lot of fun to play through.

I know I'll be getting MGSV and Fallout 4 before the end of the year, and I have no doubts that Xenoblade Chronicles X will wow me, but I'm overjoyed that I spent a weekend with this beautiful little gem that I'll no doubt return to time and again.

My only complaint would be that the spritework is inconsistent, sometimes delivering beautiful moving sprites and backgrounds and sometimes only having cookie-cutter Gamemaker placeholders.

    PROS:
+Very interactive combat. Despite being an RPG, combat isn't simply clicking items in a menu and maximizing stats and gear. Attacking can be done with a timing-based minigame to deal more damage, defending is more akin to Galaga or the Touhou series than simply hoping the enemy will miss. There's also the option to negotiate with monsters instead of fighting them outright.
+Fun characters. The main cast of this game is, by and large, hilariously written. The characters are relatively simple, but they keep a fun and lovable air throughout the story that almost forces the player to care about them and their problems.
+Great soundtrack. Toby Fox's work on the soundtrack shows his talent with music. This soundtrack in particular is one giant love-letter to leitmotifs, with simple jingles you heard at the beginning of the game coming back around again and again, mixed into different songs and in different contexts.
+Cute artwork. The 8-bit overworld avatars aren't much to speak of, but in battles the player gets to truly enjoy the pixel-art of Tuyoki and Toby Fox.
+Contextual interactions. The game takes note of almost everything you do, even little choices you make in the early game. While it enjoys flaunting this throughout the game in extra dialogue or subtle nods, it's most notable in that the game recognizes its own completion and will change drastically around the ending the player achieved. One character in particular will even take note of choices you made, regretted, and restarted the game to undo.
+Sub- and meta-text. This is a game about games, and so it's very intriguing to see how it seems to revel in psychologically analyzing your actions as a character in the context of your actions as a player.
+Price. For $10 on Steam, completionists are getting at least 10 hours of entertainment. It's a good deal, and you won't feel like you've wasted money.

    CONS:
-A bit short. While it could be said that this game has said everything it needed to say in its few hours of playtime, most of any player's playtime is going to be spent replaying the game for other endings or dialogue options. It's a bit hard to not skip old dialogue when it hasn't even been three hours since you read it last. Relying on replay-value is only so good when most of your fun comes from humor, and thus jokes you've heard before. Perhaps this is part of the game's meta-text, but it still gets a bit tiresome.
-Intricate plot. While normally this would be a positive note, here it's a bit of an annoyance. The plot of the game is somewhat confusing, and can only be understood completely by getting three different endings which require three entire runs of the game and backtracking immensely after doing certain tasks.
-Meta-text interferes with the narrative. This game likes to keep an open relationship with the fourth-wall, and as a consequence it sometimes muddies what's being said to the player versus what's being said to the character. It can get fairly confusing at times, but I never got so lost that I couldn't resolve the issue. It simply tends to break immersion.

Despite the negatives, I feel the positives of this game far outweigh them. My strongest complaint is the need for repeat playthroughs for a full experience, and I suppose if my biggest complaint is "I wanted to play this game more", then that's not much to say.

9.5/10. Buy this game. You won't regret it.

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
