Great game! Feels like Fallout with Bioshock art style. Very colorful game. The story is tongue and cheek humor with some goofiness. Best part is the freedom of player choice and how the story reacts to your decisions.

I'm just at the beginning and it got me hooked.
In an industry filled with garbage videogames i can't possibly mark any negatives for the Outer Worlds, everything just works and it's immensely entertaining.

Thank you Obsidian for this masterpiece, what a wonderfull job you did there.

As for the game itself, the graphics are beaufitul, I love the art style and setting. The gameplay feels very intuitive and the dialog system is snappy. The characters in this game seem very likable too, which helps alot.

I was waiting for a game I could lose myself in like I used too, this is that game for me.

If you decide to be a sarcastic or dismissive **** to everyone you meet, watch companions leave you and the path to completing objectives become more complicated. You can personalize your character interactions however you want. Honestly, what kind of choices do you expect to matter more than that?

I guarantee I can pin down how these "choices don't matter" clowns are playing the game. They're linearly going down the dialogue trees, exhausting all options, without realizing in the process they're eliminating a lot of them--because once you commit to a dialogue tree that is at least semi-diplomatic, a lot of the negative options disappear (which are often towards the bottom). I've reloaded dozens of saves because I couldn't get back to a different outcome that I saw the first time I interacted with an NPC. These are the players that pride themselves on being completionists, because any white unclicked text just triggers their OCD. That is not how you play these types of games.

As for my personal review of the game. I'm not a fan of the Fallout games at all. I could never manage to get very far in them as I'm not a big fan of the brown/olive green washed out palette. The Outer Worlds on the other hand sucked me in right away. While the facial animations aren't spectacular, the writing and character design is. It takes very few lines of dialogue for me to decide if I really like or hate a character, if I think they're full of **** or if I want to assist in their plight. That takes solid writing to pull off, especially with side quest NPCs. Side quests at this point in my life are often meandering distractions that have little payoff and make the game take longer unnecessarily. I probably won't do all of the side quests in this game, but the few that I have done I actually enjoyed and felt like I was accomplishing something meaningful.

I love the art direction and think every place I've visited so far is engaging and spectacular. The graphics not being God of War tier does not detract from the art direction.

The combat does need work. This is one valid complaint that most people can agree on, and my guess is Obsidian thought this was more about the story and relationships with characters than a gunplay theme park. You should still try to make the combat as fun as possible. I hope they can work on this in updates.

This game carries the mark of Obsidian and simplifying, I can only say that the game follows a simple premise and can even surpass it, which is to be an RPG worthy of being successor to others who made history.

It certainly isn't perfect, but I do firmly believe the price of admission is worth it and companies that are trying to do things the right way deserve to be rewarded. It's sad that its come to this, with companies like EA, Take Two, and Ubisoft always scheming to milk every penny they can from the whales, but hopefully with good sales figures Obsidian and Microsoft will be willing to revisit The Outer Worlds with a big budget sequel.

It is an attempt to sell Fallout 3 in new decorations. But the thing is that this game looks far less creative and interactive than New Vegas which came out in 2010. So Outer Worlds looks dated even for 2010.

The Outer Worlds is a phenomenal RPG with a great story about the late stage of a capitalist dystopia in outer space, all the characters are interesting and the semi-open worlds are compelling. Obsidian managed to combine the Fallout and Mass Effect formula to make something beautiful and better with very few flaws.

I only have two issues with the game so far, lack of a robust gun-play and difficulty balance; Normal is relatively easy while Hard is very close to the hardest difficulty, so I had to start on Normal and later on switch to Hard. I have been waiting for years to play a good RPG with a good story, both Bioware and Bethesda's recent installments (Fallout 4 and Mass Effect Andromeda) were major disappointments for me but I can honestly say that Obsidian surely delivered with the Outer Worlds, I hope they will add big expansions DLC for the game, for a fair price and of great quality ofcourse.

Fallout 4 Released, It was a good game, but it wasnt the good game I was expecting or wanted. I wanted to see that meaty RPG I grew up loving. Then mass effect andromeda released. I could look past the weird facial animations but not all the other, far more impactful issues. The writing that just didnt fit the game. Voice acting that felt like the actors were picked up from the front of a gamestop. With voices not matching alien races with very specific types of voices. Dialogue that was void of all meaning and impact. Then in the most intense and life endangering situations, lines of dialogue that sounded like the NPCs and player character were out for a daily stroll around the town lake. It was a huge let down. Hopes were high when Bethesda put on a live stream with the iconic Fallout Please Wait screen. I and hundreds of thousands other people waited. And waited. What happened 24hours later shot goosebumps all over my body. A power armor helmet faded into view. The camera panned out of a sprawling forest, it looked beautiful. But something felt off with Take Me Home, Country Roads playing in the background and nothing looking like it was touched by the war. This was it, we all thought in twitch chat as we sat in disbelief. They heard us on their shortcomings in fallout 4 and only a few years later they've come to make it up to us. Oh boy, we were all naive.

What ensued was leak after leak from Jason Schrier of kotaku. A pompus man that just wanted a part in the click bait hype train? Nope. He genuinely wanted us to know that we were all so very wrong. Leak after leak pointed out that the game was multiplayer, with base building. We all rationalized it, well the settlement system expanded to be able to be placed anywhere and multiplayer. Ok no big deal a coop fallout with a friend or 2 would be pretty cool, barring no sacrifices were made to the core of what makes a Fallout game. More leaks pointing to be a possible MMO or Rust like game. We all sat in disbelief, "Jason Schriers a **** idiot" I said to others. Heh yea sure. Then at E3 Todd God Howard confirmed our worst nightmares, Jason was 100% right. The one studio with the money to make the RPGs we had grown to love has went to the Darkside with every other studio. That was it.

In the background of all this I kept my eye on the guys that truly inspired my love into RPG games, Obsidian. During this time, Tyranny, POE 1 & 2, South park-SOT, they were releasing RPGs with meaning. Moral dilemmas, character development that meant something. They had it all, except the money. Developing deep, rich RPGs but in an Isometric POV and usually little VO.
Watching the game awards in 2018 a trailer came on. I look to the screen after hearing a curious sounding man knocking on glass as I the character looked at him through that glass. I watched, sci fi style music played as I climbed out of that same chamber on what looked to be an alien planet as that same scientist narrated. I heard "the corporations had taken over and started selling all their products way overpriced. I was intrigued. I thought the art style looks really cool, kind of Bioshock style but with a futuristic space twist to it all. My heart started racing a little. Is this another Fallout? Is this a new bioshock? What is this, starfield? I saw this in chat "FingerFlickenBoy- Space, space never changes" My heart pounding, a wave of goosebumps over my body I grab my fiances foot as she lie behind me on her phone, and I tell her to look look look!!! Then ellie is on the screen " You have to choose!" she says "You have to choose now!". It shows what we presume to be the man in the armor shot dead and Ellie says "You know you didnt have to shoot either one right? But its fine I guess you just keep being you". I audibly shouted at this point Holy **** Is this what our generation has been begging for? Then " the creators of fallout" pops up, music starts playing, music almost destined to be in this trailer. Heart racing waves and waves of goosebumps rolling over myself, I turn to look at my fiance, her jaw laid open. I shoot a huge smile at her and look back at the screen. "And the developers of Fallout new vegas". This was it, the very thing weve all asked for, for years. Well not exactly, see weve been begging bethesda to concede and just give obsidian a contract for another Fallout but we all know that will never happen and this outcome. This outcome is far better.

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky had another brain child called Outer Worlds and oh was it gorgeous. The writing in this game is pristine. The choices and dialogue is what you want in an RPG. The game is amazing. So ill just say a negative. The graphics settings. The inability to remove armor after equipping.

Sure, compared to the more recent Fallout games, it's amazing, but compared to some of the other non-Fallout RPG's, Outer Worlds kinda feels like after I get used to the pretty environments all I'm doing is bouncing from one NPC to the other doing either fetch or kill quests with nothing in the story really hooking me and driving me to find out what's next. Sure, I'm only 10-11 hours in, but I would have hoped that by then there would be something that really catches my interest and makes me want to dig deeper, at this point I've started just skipping NPC's because I don't want to get sucked into dialogue trees if they're just going to send me on uninteresting side-quests.

The graphics are pretty good, with very nice environments, but while the faces and animations are a huge step up from the likes of Fallout, they still look a bit weird. There is a lot of gear and weapons that drop (lots of them just look like recolors though), and that can be a bad thing, as half the time I feel like I'm doing inventory management, and while I can upgrade existing weapons it almost doesn't feel worth it for how fast the game throws stuff at you. I personally prefer having a good piece of gear or weapon that I can keep for a long time over a having to figure out if the new thing that dropped is better every 10 or so minutes.

Combat is pretty mediocre. The dialogue is well done, and I do like at times where I feel like I am making somewhat difficult decisions, but again, I am starting to just feel bored with the process of hopping from NPC to NPC to get more quests that are basically just either fetch or kill, the dialogue (which can't be skipped if you're reading ahead of the actual voice acting) isn't enough to make me really want to talk to the NPC's. I think at this point I may just try and bust through the main story as fast as I can before I completely lose my will to play the game.

Some mechanics, like pickpocketing, are really underutilized in the game. At the point that i don't even get why they did put them in to begin with.
There are stealth section totally unbalanced by the fact that are braindead if you use the cloak and (almost) impossible if you don't.
Why doing them like that? IDK.

The Outer Worlds is essentially Fallout, but located in space and is a bit faster paced. That's really all the game boils down to, and pretty much sums up the entire review.

The game's core focus is freedom, and you're allowed to do as much or as little as you'd like. The story is straightforward and the people in the game frequently test your morality when it comes to decision making.

The story is straightforward and the people in the game frequently test your morality when it comes to decision making. This adds to the immersion of giving you the freedom to choose how you want to play the game and how you want the story to end up.

The game does has a slight indie feel to it and it doesn't try to introduce anything new, but it does give a decent experience. I wouldn't advise buying it at its launch price of $60. It's really a $30 game at best. You can play it for dirt cheap with an Xbox Game Pass right now, so you might want to look into that while the offer still stands.

Comparatively, Prey (2017) felt like a better space shooter experience. It had more depth in pretty much every aspect. Despite a name like "The Outer Worlds", there wasn't really as much exploration as I expected. This game is well-rounded and solid, but that's all it is. Sadly, it's not a very long game either (you can get it done in two days), and there isn't much replay value.

Ok first of all what the **** to put it simply this game is like the Game of Thrones TV series, 99% of it is ****ing amazing, the best **** ever, nothing can compete with it, then you get to the ending and it's utter crap, and completely ruins the entire thing.

All of my work is for nothing, everything I did was for nothing. The game lead me to believe that I was going to be the one witnessing the revival process and helping restore everything, heck the game had 4 planets on my map that was supposedly unexplored, yea no, they're not even an option.

I play games like these so that my choices actually have an impact on the world around me, in this game, everything, every decision i made essentially was pointless. In games like Fallout, or Skyrim, I actually get to witness what the world around me changes into after I finally finish it, and I like that, it gives what I do a meaning. In this game you just get everything explained to you through a slide show, and best of all you are stuck, forever, you can't even explore the world once you're done, any places you forgot to visit or quests you didn't do, or even just wander around the world as a maxed out character, you're just stuck in a room with a quest to free Phineas, an endless loop. These are the guys that created Fallout New Vegas, so how is that this game design and decision is so unbelievably stupid.

The ending didn't even feel like an ending, it was cool as **** with everyone I helped storming the station with me, but it felt as if it was just getting started, as I mentioned I still felt as if I had 4 planets to explore, that there was still more. And lets talk about that Boss Fight against the giant Robot? Really that was the final boss? Almost as original as the Helicopter boss fight from The Division. I thought the big bad guy was Chairman Rockwell, even when I saw him at the end, I didn't kill him, I left him alive because I expected there to be a big boss battle with him, I thought I was only halfway done with the game, and then it just ends?! The ending of this game is rushed, that is obvious, and it is so disappointing, considering you're the developers of one of the best Fallout games, it is sad to see this amazing game ruined by stupid game design.

In conclusion, everything up until the end slideshow is a masterpiece, some of the best stuff I have ever played in a while, but the "ending" felt like it was only half done, the game was only 50% complete, that I had so much more to do, but no, my experience is ruined, everything done seemingly pointless if I don't get to witness it. Hopefully there is a PC mod in the near future that lets me explore the game post-ending with my maxed out character, and one that actually makes my objective complete. Why couldn't this game have pulled a Breath of the Wild and let you continue on after you're done, with the quest complete and let you keep any EXP and loot you acquired from the final boss area, and just act as if you're not done, but still able to play.

Disappointing and rushed, hopefully the sequel fixes these issues and brings Obsidian to the top spot once more. Would be a 10/10 if it wasn't for the ending, 7/10.

Very good game, It's Indie 2A at it's finest. But, almost paradoxal, it feels more like a Fallout 3 than a full Fallout New Vegas. Something is still missing about the athmosphere, but discovering a new world and a new finely crafted lore really worth it.

Personally I prefer the fallout formula.

Also, I noticed that if I kill someone without any witnesses I still loose standing with the faction. I feel like that should not be the case as no one knows the person is dead and no one knows I killed the person.

I would recommend this game, but do not buy this expecting fallout new vegas, you will get disappointed. I really hope obsidian continues to develop the idea and further expands on it in future releases.

This game delivers a true RPG experience unlike Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. i really hope this game gets Obsidian's foot in the door to become a great game company that focuses on quality assurance and not predatory monetizing for pure greed like Bethesda has recently. The mechanics are similar to New Vegas which was without a doubt my favorite Fallout game. I didn't mean to compare it to Bethesda so much but how can you not? The companions have well thought out quest lines as far as i can tell and it delivers some perfect dark humor that we all know and love. Although i am not a fan of weapon and armor degradation it is fairly easy to keep your equipment repaired with the engineer skill. This game blew my expectations out of the water. Lots of people were worried that it would not hold up to New Vegas standards but in my opinion it is shaping up to be way better. I ran into no bugs in my whole time playing nor has it crashed or lagged much for me at least. First off, I've read a lot of nonsense whining that "the game is too short", or it has "bad writing"... Yada yada, excuse excuse. To se the record straight, this game was advertised as a 20-30 hour narrative experience with a concise narrative. In terms of scope anyone expecting anything else was pretty stupid. In terms of what Obsidian ACTUALLY promised (and not this thing some people expect) vs what they actually delivered, Obsidian delivered on all cylinders. This game hearkens back to the classics, like KotOR 2 or FNV in a way that plays to the strengths and bolsters the legacy of this studio. This is a pure RPG experience.

It's just a shame the genre has of late been hijacked by low-RPGs that obsess over overly complex crafting systems, building systems and needlessly expansive (and often empty) open world's. For those of you who are sick of these generic titles, the Outer World's offers something that's so feels fresh despite many of its core elements been so old. It's a welcome return to classics that have been left behind in this age of all inclusive gaming, where every title must by some 100+ hour epic that constantly tries to one up the competition with pointless "innovation" upon pointless "innovation".

To summarize, no. The outer worlds is not Fallout 4. The Outer Worlds is not Mass Effect Andromeda. The Outer Worlds is the best of classic RPGs, that feels like it was ripped straight out of the genres golden ages and dropped right on your lap. If anything, this title should be a lesson to other devs. Sometimes less is more. Not every title HAS to reinvent the wheel. This game feels like it was made by people who love what they do. It feels like it was made by people making a game that they themselves would like to play. It has a heart, a soul. It even has a sense of humour. It is exactly what it was intended to be. If you don't like it, I'm truly sorry to say, this one's on you.

That said, The Outer Worlds is one hell of a game and a masterful RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. The game is flexible enough that you can make any character you want from a socially awkward genius to a lovable dimwit and every quest will offer at least one solid solution for you.

Every side character in the game is well developed and fleshed out, far beyond the Bethesda school of single word descriptors Nazeem in Skyrim is just a jerk. Conrad in The Outer Worlds also comes off as a jerk, until you engage in conversation and realise that he is troubled by a number of things. Even a simple bartender, that would be little more than a trade window in most games, has a history and aspirations that you can delve deep into. It does so much more to develop the world as a real place with people to care about. The companions and plot relevant characters are even better, with complex histories and conflicting emotions on a number of matters. It just makes engaging with them so much more enjoyable, a positive thing considering the amount of dialogue, especially in the early hours of the game.

The combat is fun and engaging, with the gunplay being largely satisfying and the melee combat feeling nice and weighty. The TTD system is a nice answer to Fallout's VATS system, but this is essentially just bullet time which has the additional incentive of applying debuffs to enemies in order to tip the odds in your favour. Melee weapons allow you to block and you have obtain the ability to dodge in any direction from the start. As for the enemies themselves, they really fall into two categories. Ranged and melee. There are different methods of engagement, some with weak points to aim for and enemies that are susceptible to different damage types.

One negative aspect of the game is the UI elements. Navigating menus and inventory screens is a fiddly and often frustrating affair, at least on PC. Different key prompts are required in order to scrap, modify and repair items, but these can change on the fly depending on whether you are in the field or at a workbench and so on. It also appears that despite having the cursor appear in these screens, it can only be used to select items, and actions are bound to the keys. There are also some issues with the HUD, with a lot of complaints aimed at the font colours and sizes that can make it quite difficult to read some prompts and item descriptions.

In spite of this, the game is still absolutely solid. The few gripes that I have are minor and something that I will either simply need to get used to, or that can hopefully be patched with relative ease.

If you are a fan of engaging RPGs with true depth, choice and consequence you should absolutely grab The Outer Worlds as soon as possible!

I am extremely disappointed of optimization. It has very noticeable micro-stutter every 5-10 second. This makes this game totally unplayable as shooter. Also it crashes every 20-30 minutes so its Supernova mode is unplayable as well. Every time it crashes you have to start the quest from very beginning which annoys me as hell.

Do I have to mention that all of these happen on hi-end PC

Do I have to mention that all of these happen on hi-end PC and don't change even on lowest settings? So this is the answer why this game still isn't on Steam. There are reviews there.

I think I'm being generous with this grade, as the game is nothing special. Nothing revolutionary, just the same old Obsidian-ish things. That said it's not bad at all, i've yet to see any glitches, bugs or whatsits, meaning the game is in good shape from a technical aspect.

    The Good:
I like the world they built. ARE building, hopefully. The aesthetic is nice, the graphics are great, the design choices are interesting. Equipment could've gone with a little more imaginative look, but that's just me. It runs smoothly, doesn't freeze, hasn't crashed yet. The combat system is in a good shape, but seems very basic. The weapon variety, though nowhere near revolutionary, is worth mentioning. The environment is colorful, if a bit overwhelming. I understand they wished to convey the fact that it's an alien planet and all, but i think it can be a bit much at times. The enemies, like in a lot of RPGs use the same basic models for all ranks, with a slight change in hue, size or armor. They're still interesting to look at, mind you, i just wish there was more variety.

    The Bad:
Environments feels kind of bland and dead. There are barely any missions to do on the first planet before you have to leave. And you can do them all, very easily, with a basic knowledge of RPG stats. It also feels...Short. As in, this was probably a bigger game, but got chopped up to feed on DLC revenue. Maybe i'm just being cynical, i don't know. I just feel as it should have had more substance for the price. I understand the people saying that after turning the game off, you really don't get a craving for more like with some other games. I Like it, i just think it may have been over-hyped.

Obsidian seems to have done a good job with this game. Here's hoping they keep working at it, with more, reasonably priced, preferably content laden, expansions.

Expand

Impressive game by Obsidian after marvelous Fallout: New Vegas.
Colorful world, interesting storyline, many good quests and perfect dialogue system.
Not best graphics in 2020, but still good for not AAA project.

This is the type of game you want to dive deep into. I feel like people saying that its " too short" are just rushing though the main story. There is a TON of meat on these bones. Enjoy the amazing side quests and just take the time to admire the work that you are seeing. 10/10 Expand

I honestly think that the **** Saints row 2 PC port (which is thankfully getting fixed) played better than this port. Due to all these graphical and some possible engine issues, the combat feels clunky and marred down from forced mouse acceleration, mouse smoothing, and of course; an inability to centre the crosshair.
When it comes to story, the beginning is very abrupt and confusing (going to give the benefit of the doubt and say that this is planned), but there really isn't a good sense of motivation. I've been seeing a lot of comparisons to F:NV and Fallout 4, but those games had a strong sense of motivation while still playing on the destroyed, not as it once was, world feel. However it's just "oh hey so you are the only dude outta all these colonists that you don't know at all, that i could revive. oh and now you gotta save their asses for me". Now while I do quite enjoy the emotions behind the characters and the way they speak, the character design just feels wack imo but I can't quite think about why.
My recommendations is to sit on this game until the PC version gets patched, and pray that you can sit through tedious fetch quests, but this game is not worth full price at all.

You like Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Elder Scrolls then you will love this game. The dialogue is great, there is a multitude of choices available with each quest, and it will keep you playing for hours without wanting to take a break.

This game is so good. It’s the fallout we have deserved for years. Finally Obsidian back behind the RPG games again! Why does this only have an eight overall!? So disappointed with these reviews! This game is a HIT! If you love traditional RPG games Obsidian really brought back all the thing people love and trashed the extra garbage Bethesda loads into the games!

To sum up this game with one word "bland" at no point do you feel cool or powerful just a boring joke character that everyone disrespects constantly. The story is poorly written and simple to follow the companions are all disrespectful towards the player character and there is no option to stand up for yourself you just have to agree with whatever idiotic thing they say. It isn't an RPG so much as it is a shooter on rails you have no choice.

The gameplay itself is inferior to Fallout 4 and Mass effect Andromeda (Yes worse than ME:A) you get about 20 hours of gameplay it tries to copy other games too much and falls flat (Fo4,ME:A,Borderlands)

The companions themselves make me just want to put them in an airlock and blast them into space. You seriously couldn't make a single companion that is likable? Even ME:A did this!

We need to face the facts. The Obsidian that made Fo:NV peaked with this achievement and has been dishing out slop ever since. Obsidian is dead.

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
