Unfortunately, it also suffers the same downside Fallout New Vegas has, which is a disappointingly mute character; and naturally a simplistic stealth and combat gameplay that plagues the entire franchise ever since Bethesda. Similarly, it doesn't let you play at the end of the game, finishing in a rather disappointing ending after obvious black and white choices.

I think it's all have to do with the fact that the big arch in this game is fight against giant corporation/government and there's no solid arguments in real life for supporting big business with all of the corruption surfaced just in a past decade.
In any case, the world is big and beautiful, the shooting part feels good even tho the game is converted to bullet sponges-fest closer to the end, so it's really playable, but it's not really that grounded to reality rpg/fps mix that previous obsidian's game of the same genre was (nor that it claimed to be, even tho it heavily borrows from it).
TLDR: Better then fallout 3 and especially 4, but not as good as brilliant Nev Vegas.

Then there were Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale. With emerging Bioware it was the golden age of RPG genre. Black Isle is long dead now, but people from Black Isle Studios, like Chris Avellone, has gained authority among RPG fans and found themselves in another projects, still making good games, like KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. Though I wasn't a big fan of "new Fallout" including NV and of the Pillars of Eternity I've expected The Outer Worlds with much anticipation. And was utterly disappointed.

The game stylistically reminds a lot about the good old Fallout 2 combined with NV with its retro-futurism and dark humor. Sometimes it reminds KOTOR 2, especially music score. And that's all the good things I can say about OW. Because as a story it is boring with flat, caricature characters and dull gameplay. Dialogues are pretty stupid, quests are trivial, characters are laughable and the plot is not involving. Moreover, you'll see a lot of modern Western propaganda here with its offensive politically correct Orwellian narrative in order to "educate" gamers. Honestly, I remember such rubbish ideological indoctrination through pop culture clearly enough from my childhood in the USSR to be fond by it. Thank you very much, but I've not volunteered to be used as Hong Weibing - enjoy your "cultural revolution" without my participation and not at the cost of my money. So if you are not Westerner and do not want to be insulted by their rotten ideology, if you value your intelligence, if you are looking for deep story, compelling characters, smart dialogues and engaging gameplay, than The Outer Worlds is certainly not for you. Better replay The Witcher 3 or play some JRPG.

    - RPG Elements are bland and barely impact the game as my 9/100 "Long guns" character was melting everything on his way on the hard difficulty with a simple and very common assault rifle.

    - "Supernova" difficulty is a chore. Not challenging, just bad and near impossible to play with companions as they keep dying.

    - The quests are all alike, they feel like MMO stuff. Uninspired and forgettable.

    - The choices don't really have any consequences unless your choice is to murder every colonist. Then maybe...

Seriously, are you guys giving this one 10 just to prove a point to Bethesda because, I got to admit, even Skyrim and Fallout 4 did a lot things better than this one...

The writing is mostly great, and different ways in which some of the missions can be completed is clever and refreshing. The combat is decent, and the world is interesting enough, but after a while the game feels a bit one-note with the themes and gameplay.

Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas and this game unquestionably has similar aspects to F:NV but the comparisons are misleading. Core game design is very different. Unfortunately, not for the better.

First, the game is not open world. Each planet - and you are mislead that there are a dozen to explore when there are really just a few - is more like a hub or level and that hub/level is actually quite small. Furthermore, unlike F:NV, there is no desire to truly explore them. They are sparsely populated and there are no "empty" areas. Every location coincidentally has a place in your, or your companions', story-line. In contrast, in F:NV there are many homes that you can enter and where named NPC's reside but that... do nothing. They serve only to flesh out the world or add color. In TOW, literally most homes are inaccessible with convenient "Evicted" or "Quarantined" signs posted to explain away why you can't interact with them. As a result, the world doesn't feel like a real place or a place that you want to explore (not that these hub/levels actually could afford it anyway).

Persuasion matters, which is refreshing. But it's far too easy and OP. You can apply skill points to parent skills that govern child skills (e.g. Dialogue governs Persuasion, Lie, and Intimidate) and all child skills get leveled-up by placing points into the parent skill until the child is over level 50. in dialogue, you'll need one of the three child skills during discussions. You won't be sure which but only a couple skill checks, even towards the very end of the game, require these to be over 50. And, you can increase them another 15 percentage points with easy-to-find armor mods or using companions.

The game is far too easy on Normal difficulty. Period. Just to add to Gamespot's comments on this, your skill points are always ahead of curve so every Persuasion/Lie/Intimidate or Hack/Lockpick skill check is a breeze. And with combat being as easy as it is (more on that next) why not throw your skill points here?

Combat is repetitive and boring. The enemies aren't diverse (e.g. requiring shock on one enemy type, corrosive on another) so there is no need to vary your tactics. There may only be a half dozen enemy types in the entire game and aside for 1, their critical hit locations don't vary (i.e. aim for the head). It's sad then that loading screens display enemies their anatomies but that info doesn't matter. At all. Just pump 'em full of lead. Combat is so brain dead.

Lastly, faction points just don't matter. I've been caught stealing a dozen times, completed what felt like were significant faction quests (some of which were terminal to the faction) and yet nothing in the world noticeably changed. I could still come and go to all locations without any effect. F:NV actions actually felt more impactful to the world.

Ultimately, while this is from the dev's of F:NV and it takes aspects of that game (e.g. "VATS" slow-mo, RPG point progression) it's a much shallower game. The writing and story, while fine, aren't enough to justify purchasing this game or even spending your 25 hours playing it to 100% completion.

This game could have been much more but it's not even better than Fallout 4, the only things they did better with this game than Bethesda does with their games was make the game run better with barely any bugs and having skill checks of their own categories (Which barely matter in this game) but other than that, meh. People like to pretend that this game is 80+ hours long, but that only happens if alt tab and go do something else with your life or go around aimlessly doing absolutely nothing inside the game, which can be done in any game.

People made fun of Fallout 4's story for being "Find your son" but in TOW is "Find dimethyl sulfoxide" as part of one of the most uninteresting stories of any RPG that I've ever played. The skill checks barely matter, there are no big consequences to anything outside of killing people which makes their faction hostile, but other than that, certain decisions only made someone angry at me. The only "consequence" that I found was the big decision in the first planet, but I didn't really have to do anything there again so it didn't matter at all.

Companions don't seem to care about what you do unless you kill someone close to them and I don't even know if this applies to all of them. Their side quests are boring and one of them in particular is very cringy.

Character creation is pointless because you don't get to see your character outside the inventory menu or when you go idle. Equipment in general, from armor and weapons is lacking, all the corporate factions have the same exact uniforms, just in different colors, the non-corporate factions have one outfit with the exception of the Iconoclasts and the Marauders. Perks are very uninteresting, I ended up taking the more carrying capacity as soon as I could because nothing else seemed too interesting.

The world is so small and empty without any interesting in it whatsoever that Fallout 76 does a much better job at it. There's nothing interesting to find, no multiple side quests, no random encounters and locked rooms where I needed high lockpick to gain access to ended up having just a handful of bits, some consumables and maybe a weapon. NPCs are for the most part static, they don't have daily schedules and just stand in the same spot you find them, with a few here and there just moving from A to B and then maybe to C and then repeat. Some of the NPCs don't even acknowledge changes within their own faction.

There's a lot of loot but a lot of it is nothing but clutter, plenty of consumables that give you some buff for 30 seconds or 2 minutes, very short time that made me ignore 95% of the loot I found.

Many of the quests seem to be straight out of the MMORPG playbook, go here and kill this enemy, kill 10 of these, 3 of these and 1 of these, go here and click this, go there and click that, go fetch this and bring it to me/to someone else, etc and you get a thank you and here's some money for your troubles.

Combat is the same as every first person shooter ever, but with less weapon variety. Enemies are also lacking in variety, once you reach Monarch you would have seen all of them.

It took me around 31 hours to beat the game with the Phineas good ending without the use of fast travel and completing almost every quest in the game, perhaps I missed one or two but it wouldn't have given the game even another hour.

Some people have said that this is the perfect combination of Mass Effect and Fallout, but that's an insult to those franchises, even considering that they have Andromeda and 76.

Despite some funny conversations, is boring boring boring to play. I did finish it but the ending wasn't really an ending, more like the game just stopping (if anyone remembers how stunted F:NV's vanilla ending was, it's essentially like that).

Items are everywhere, but picking them up is boring because they're all essentially the same and none of them are useful.

The game is not open world. It is linear. You cannot progress to new areas until you complete stages in the main quest. The zones you progress to are hilariously small and are all carbon copies of each other (one large corporate town with a store, a clinic, a workshop, and a palace, with a few pointless buildings outside the town and a couple locations for quests to send you to). This is a linear game with backtracking for fetch quests.

    Fetch quests.
    Fetch quests.
    Fetch quests.

Even the main story is 99% fetch quests. In fact, the whole premise for the story is a fetch quest, and the game abruptly ends when you complete that fetch quest.

The combat is very barebones. If you get sent to fight anything, it'll be a group of 3-5 generic mobs that you've seen before, and then the quest is over and it's time to go back to the NPC. There is only one boss in the entire game.

The extensive character trait and skill choices make promises they can't keep. There's no point taking stealth because every quest just hands you a disguise that lets you walk, in plain sight, past guards and enemies. I had a stealth of 3/100 and still beat the game without killing anyone in cities (except those I explicitly chose to murder). I would say that with the exception of the dialogue and gun skills, none of the skills make a difference to gameplay at all.

Without the humor, this would be magnificently bland as a whole. The game seems to realize this because it injects goofy one-liners into every conversation to the point where I couldn't tell characters apart anymore. Everyone spoke with the same snarky voice, my character included.

This would be a decent game to pick up for $20 once there's a Complete Edition for 70% off, play for a weekend, then forget all about it. At its current price it's an absolute joke, and the worst Obsidian game I've played.

The game is very polished compared to Fallout 4. However the game is very small, with very few areas to explore. It feels like the game is over before it even starts. It is much smaller in scope than Fallout, which is to be expected considering it's been developed by a small team. I thought it would be bigger with more planets, more areas to explore, bigger variatey of weapons/armor and more interesting enemies, so it is a bit of a dissapointment. Hopefully they get a bigger budget so that they can fully realize the games potential in a sequel.

    - Setting: very inconsistent, it starts out genuienly funny in a sarcastic/dark humor sort of way but then turns into a semi-serious sci-fi setting with some very shallow social commentary. Corporations = BAD mmmkay?

    - Visuals/art direction is so hilariously bad you wouldn't believe it's an Unreal Engine 4 game. Character models/animations are straight from 2010, the colours are all burned out and there is a heavy post-process filter that makes it all blurry and washed out on to of assets simply being ugly.

    - Itemisation/character progression: as boring as it gets. There are maybe 4 or 5 basic weapon types and everything else is just better versions or different damage types. Damage types are simply annoying, you see an enemy of type X you have to use damage type Y. Add to that that light ammo weapons are pretty much useless and all you have to do is cycle between an assault rifle and an energy weapon. Weapon and armor mods are even more boring and can safely be ignored. I don't think I've ever used a consumable other than the healing thingies because they're all so worthless.

    - Combat: very basic first-person shooter with few very tactical options. 99% of the time you just mindlessly shoot the same 4-5 enemy types over and over.

    - Quests/choices: inconsequential. Quests are all go to a navpoint kill/fetch something. There was a point at the start of the game where a very kind/good character follows you and you can just walk in and murder her boss in cold blood and she will help you without batting an eye, then will randomly go "OMFG you psychopath what did you just do???"... but 10 seconds later she's like "lol nvm can I come with you pretty please?".

The game sometimes does things for you that you don't mean to. In particular there is a quest where you have to recover research data from an overrun research facility (fetch quests...) and you technically have a choice to keep it for yourself, but half of the dialog options will simply give it away to the NPC when you absolutely don't mean to.

In 2000s this game would be absolutely panned, but I guess compared to what goes for an RPG these days (cough cough Bethesda cough) you at least have some dialog choices and skill checks?

Everything is done okay, but nothing is done well. I wasn't even particularly hyped for this game, I just wanted it to be more of Obsidian doing its thing, but this is so perfectly mediocre that I don't even know if I'm going to finish it.

You finish the tutorial area and then the plot grinds to a halt. The high point of New Vegas was the faction dynamics, but in The Outer Worlds you are just presented with the binary choice of Corporation X vs Locals, and it never does anything interesting with that conflict. There are no real consequences for your actions, either. As an example, I shot my companion's boss right in front of her and she decided that she had to stay with me to "protect the world from me". That was it, I never heard anything else from her about the matter. I wasn't even meaning to do an evil playthrough, I just got bored of the story and decided to start pushing the boundaries of what I could do. The answer: I just got a penalty to buying and selling stuff to a particular faction.

I got it on Xbox Gamepass for a dollar and I'm glad I didn't actually buy it, otherwise I'd probably have been much more disappointed. I recommend that you do the same.

I am really surprised by negative scores. I am a big fallout fan and this game is solid fallout without all unnecessary crap.
    BUT...
the game gave my headache and made me motion sick for some reason. I turned off some options and it was better but still lurking. I find it weird. Maybe I am just allergic to huge amounts of estrogen- game is full of it. Most of the engineers are women.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great start, but they really needed to implement the stuff that are also bad about Fallout? Also, there's a lot of silly quests, like, you speak to the NPC, then you go to the next room, read a document that is conviniently right there, go back and talk again to the NPC. Wow, mission acomplished! There are some graphical glitches, but in general it's a good game. Far from perfect, but fun. Expand

I was really excited about this game, as Fallout New Vegas and KOTOR 2, both from Obsidian, are two of my all-time favorite games. And boy was I disappointed! It is a poor imitation of New Vegas, in space. In bullet points:
    - The inventory system is horrible. Midway through the game I stopped swapping the weapons and armor of my character and those of the NPCs and I stopped opening any containers for loot. Also, every nook and corner in the game is full of loot containers, it is crazy.

    - The story is bland. You can still get a taste of the good writing Obsidian is known for, but the overall story so uninteresting and your protagonist is so lacking in background that you simply don't care. The NPCs were also mostly one-dimensional caricatures: the sweet, insecure engineer, the drunk boisterous hunter, the swashbuckler doctor and so on. There wasn't a single piece of dialog with them that interested me. Compare this to the NPC interaction on KOTOR 2 for instance.

    - The combat is in a CRPG for me very secondary, however I still found it extremely tedious here. You keep on fighting three types of enemies, they all have similar tactics, you only click the left mouse button....

    - The gameworld (physical interiors and exteriors plus politics, belief system etc.) is very shallow. Except for some colorful exteriors all of the graphics seemed to be copied from KOTOR. The socioeconomic and political structure is one-dimensional. All your decisions as the protagonist fall somewhere within this single dimension.

    - The abilities you and the NPCs obtain are, in my opinion, pretty much irrelevant to gameplay. I spent some points on speech skills early on, afterwards starting distributed them randomly. The perks are basically useless. I never used a single companion ability.

Overall, Obsidian simply repeated itself instead of coming with some innovative and new concepts, regarding storytelling, game design, role playing, player advancement etc. It is a pity that in 15 years they did not move the bar one bit.

It's basically a lesser/incomplete version of Borderlands and Fallout: New Vegas.

I felt like this game was rushed to release as the game gets repetitive and the depth gets shallower in the later game.
There's nothing special in the game as there are no unique features like interesting skills, weapon effects, graphics.
Dialogues and voice acting are fairly good but the plot is very dull.

From the art direction all the way down to the music it all feels so very Fallout 3 / Beth soft RPG. The throw back dated nature is almost certainly a design choice yet... even compared to stand out RPGs of yesteryear it doesn't fully stand up. If you dare to compare it to a more modern RPG like Assassins Creed Odyssey, the Outer Worlds shortcomings are as plain to see as the nose on your face.

At the core Outer Worlds is a very dialog heavy RPG. On the plus side of the equation, diverse outcomes can come about based on your decisions. There are plenty of different load outs and perks for your character so replay appeal could be pretty high . Trying the game with a character with low IQ and low dialog skills for instance would be an interesting experiment.

Graphically it's all a bit meh. The biome designs of the levels are all very video gamey. They don't feel like real places, more like stylized sets. Again this is most likely a design choice, the developers want this to be a retro style RPG. Sadly though the characters are kind of boring and forgettable. Because of this I'm finding myself dreading asking more questions of a character than absolutely necessary. The more I play the less I talk. This is bad news for a game that doubled down on dialog as a core mechanic.

Combat in all honesty kind of sucks. If you love bouncy floaty controls and gun play that lacks ooomph, you will love the combat. Sure, the combat is leaps and bounds better than say, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines from 15 years ago. But VTMB was an infinitely more memorable and groundbreaking experience. VTMB had a great story with strongly designed characters who had interesting things to say. Outer worlds has little to none of those qualities. The combat is so lack luster you can see why dialog became a bigger part of the experience.

The loot system on hard mode is the most broken loot system I have ever seen. You will find countless vending machines and sales folk with no shortage of things to buy. But, you will never really need to buy or sell anything. I'm halfway through the game and I only purchased one or two things. I only even bought those because the plot wouldn't move forward without them.

It is entirely possible that playing on the hardest mode (super nova) is the way the good lord (or at least Obsidian) intended you to play this game. If I don't die of boredom on my first play through or if something changes in an amazing way I will play the game again and maybe regret giving the game only a 7.

I can only guess the Outer Worlds is getting such great reviews because 1. It's not made by Bethesda. 2. It's not entirely broken and 3. Because it's not made by Bethesda.

I was eagerly anticipating the Outer Worlds hoping it might be a spiritual successor to F:NV. Sadly whilst the Outer Worlds has many similarities to that game, in reality it doesn't come close to matching it.

The game is unforgivably short. I am quite a slow player, I love to properly explore games with open worlds, but even so I completed The Outer Worlds in less than 40 hours. It's shorter than a Fallout:NV DLC! I reached what I thought was a cutscene which was about to trigger the second act of the game, only for the end credits to roll.

Gameplay feels dumbed down and derivative, aimed at the casual gamer. Even on the hardest difficulty setting there is nothing challenging here. The level up system is irksome and shallow. Annoyingly there's a hard cap at Level 30, which you hit all too quickly.

The story itself is unremarkable and hard to get invested in given the short duration of the game. You have 6 companions who all have a brief quest but again this content is weak and not at all memorable.

A real shame because the gameworld is nicely imagined and there are the beginnings of a good game here.

The gunplay felt uninspiring and added nothing new over Fallout games with little improvements, with guns so lacking in variety I had to question if there was even a person devoted to their creation.
I just found it boring as hell, I never would have thought that a game that was so similar to fallout games of the past, but being on a distant planet would be so boring to explore.

If this was a Bethesda game, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised. However, it's not, and I had bigger expectations from Obsidian. An absolute disappointment.

    Pros:
    - Skill checks are back
    - Pretty decent combat mechanics

    Cons:
    - Outdated, neon graphics make the came look cartoonish and boring.
    - Loved the insane weapon variety from New Vegas? Well, it's gone now! Have fun using the same 4 boring weapons over and over again. Oh look, I've found a hammer for the millionth time, but this one does lightning damage!!!
    - Approximately FIVE types of enemies, which simply come in different sizes and pretty much all fight the exact same way. Combat becomes a boring slog after you've killed your 500th cookie cutter bandit or giant lizard.
    - Loot is all the same and there's entirely too much of it. The lack of variety makes looking in loot boxes completely pointless when you realize you don't even need any of it. Expect to have an entire inventory full of completely useless consumables and tens of thousands of rounds of ammo that you'll never need.
    - Story is typical "corporation bad! communism good!" propaganda. I'm sure the developers won't mind good ole' capitalism when they start gashing players for overpriced, mediocre DLC, like they already did for their overpriced, mediocre game.
    - Clear left wing agenda. All of the powerful people are dikey women with short hair, and all of the dudes are bumbling morons. First companion is also a lesbian. That's fine in and of itself, but it's clearly being shoved in your face, which makes it obnoxious. Yes you are given "choice", but it pretty much amounts to: take down the evil corporations = "good" ending, join them = "bad" ending, so the morality of your choices is still determined by the politics of the writers. If you are a naive 15 year old, or masculine-feminist basement dweller, you will love it. If you are an adult, who understands that even poor people today live better than Roman emperors, and most modern technology exists because of capitalism, you'll be wanting to pluck your own eyeballs out halfway through the game.
    - Extremely boring perk and leveling system. Perks amount to small percentage increases in mundane stats. The only relevant skills are guns and dialogue. You can pretty much ignore the rest because you'll hardly need them.
    - Complete lack of exploration due to to small, linear hub levels with absolutely no unique content to discover.
    - Insanely short. Did all side quests I could find, "explored" the "worlds", and finished in 22 hours. And that's taking my time. That's a **** shooter, not an rpg. People claiming they got 40+ hours are straight up lying, unless they spent it walking around in circles pretending to "explore" the content that doesn't exist in the first place. There is not even close to 40 hours worth of content here.
    - Completely uninspired fetch quests form most of the game. Grab this item, bring it to so and so, clear out the bandits, download the data from the computer, etc, etc. Had no desire to do them, or even pay attention to why, other than to clear my log.

The game is **** plain and simple. People giving this game a 10/10 and saying it is New Vegas 2 are either completely delusional or payed reviewers. If you love borderlands and the like, you'll probably get some value out of it, but if you are a hardcore rpg lover, seeking depth, immersion, and variety, save your money for Disco Elysium, a far better game in every aspect.

Is it enjoyable to play? Yes. Is it something I’ll throw over 100 hours into and play several times? No.
Kinda glad it’s part of Microsofts live plan, I can play it without owning it for 1/10th of the cost of buying the game. One playthrough will be enough with this title anyway.

The game reminds me most of a weird Fallout, mass effect, borderlands mashup without its own distinct style. The differing zones, each with its own loading sections and the mostly tame yet still different personalities of companions is very much Mass Effect. The mobs you encounter in the zones are basically just like borderlands, Skag type mobs or bandit and psycho type mobs. Very few that feel unique to this new IP. Fallout with the dialogue, tons and tons of it, all pretty interesting but nothing….great.

It has a number of typical problems that all these games suffer from, the biggest as ever, the inventory:
Inventory management: it has a value to weight ratio filter, which is something all RPG type games need. But it also has like 40+ consumables, with a good 2-3+ different items that do the same stuff. I get these are different corporations etc selling different wares so the “need” to have their own versions of everything is there to go with the canon but my god a basic filter to split them into what they do would have been nice, or a search box where you could type names of items (if you are keen to memorize 40+ things names) or affects you want e.g. +stealth or +hack to show all consumables/armour that would give you those bonuses. Seriously these things are always added in by modders, why can’t a game dev just make it standard for a change?

Time dilation (VATS): This is fun to read the text on people and mobs, it seems most of the comedy went into these descriptions, but how it works is a bit yanky. You activate it, shoot a mob, then it jumps position to an ‘after hit’ position (if you shoot a person in the face, they suddenly move about 1m with their head back looking up or down meaning you have to then move your sights to shoot again to hit the face again). It’s not huge but its annoying, time should be going very slowly, things shouldn’t break neck change position after the first hit.

Quest tracking: one at a time. So when you have 8 quests in 1 zone and want to work out which is nearest, you’ll be flicking between journal and map 8 times!....yay…. Plus, when in a town not all quest trackers work properly. If you track a quest which is outside the town, then change from local to regional map to see where you need to go, the markers just show the town gates. You have to leave the town to see the actual destination.

Read all the entries you want, it's all fluff and you don't get any useful information from them at all. Enemies are pretty much all the same as well. Outlaws, marauders, corporate soldiers, bugs, wild space dogs and space gorillas.

    1. No third-person camera.
If this is a game like Bioshock or CoD, I can understand why the game is first person only. But in a RPG game (which can you actually customize your character's face), no third-person camera is simply not acceptable. If you stand still for a moment, the game actually show your character in third-person view in idle animation, so why not allow us to play in that view too?

    2. Skill system way too simple
With Fallout's SPECIAL system I thought outer world's character system is either going to be as complex or at least unique. However skill system in this game feel so simplify to a point there is basically 3 option: melee, range, talk your way out. I can't believe they group all range weapon into one thing.

    3. Perk design like a mobile game
Just look at the perk page, and tell me this doesn't looks like a mobile game. And those perks doesn't provide you with any interesting game changing action or passive. Think about sandman, nerd rage, mystery stranger...Outer Worlds' Perk give you 25% head shot damage....+20 carry weight...

    4. Load Load Load
Go play GreedFall, and see what an small studio can do with Loading time, and look at Outer Worlds long and frequent loading screen is just too funny. The idea you have to go out a dungeon to the world map, and then load to your ship or another location is such a terrible design in 2019. If we kill/ finish the mission in a dungeon, we should be able to fast travel in the dungeon (unless the loading time is less than 2 seconds)

5 World is simply to simple
Many people talk about how great they feel when they first enter the Groundbreaker, however, when i first enter it the only feeling i have is this: This is a shopping district? where are the people?
Everywhere you go the world feel so empty, and I can understand that in New Vegas, but in Outer World? no. Why will they open 10 shops in a location where only 1 traveler are walking around? and that person is you.

    6 Color Choice
Personally the color in this game hurts my eyes. (maybe great for other players, but not me)

With all those complains, I still enjoy this game, with lots of the same reasons like everyone else. I just wish they can do better, and I know they can do better, so why not just do it?

That said, let's begin. You're probably wondering "Wow, why has this jackass given this masterpiece 6/10?". Well, that's easy: This game is short. It lacks content in a variety of areas, including story and character development. There's limited weapon/armour crafting/modification. The stats and perks are just about varied enough to be able to create a new character with a specific playstyle.

I feel this game is meant to be played on a harder difficult to pad out and fluff the content. Maybe that was my mistake, but - referring to Obsidian's previous work - I should be wanting to play this game again. Differently, on a harder difficulty, with a different character type. Maybe a Melee/ Heavy armourer, stating into leadership for team play with my companions. But...I don't want to.

The game play was fun *at first*. But after a while I realized... I hadn't really picked up the new debuff types, I wasn't informed (without specifically looking for it in the codex) about the viability of the elemental types. There wasn't many enemy types to mix up the gameplay either. Leading to a lot of sigh-inducing mission endings where I thought I'd fight a unique enemy as a boss. But nope, just a reskin. Or even the same old enemy I'd killed dozens, if not hundreds, of at that point.

The crafting/modification/tinkering system is just... like a last second edition? There are not many weapon variations. I found possibly a dozen special weapon/armour pieces. Probably a few more. As well as a select few science weapons. And.... they're crap. Not in practice, but they cost so much to 'tinker' (i.e. level up, which gives increased dps) that they're not worth using after a few levels. Again, maybe on Supernova you'd use them. But it'd be an expensive investment because, as much as you can get lots of money in the game. You can only get it *once* via the quests because most drops arent' worth a damn. Armour/weapons barely sell for anything, and are better for breaking down for weapon or armour parts to be able to repair your items.

There are only about a dozen or so mods types between guns and melee weapons. The modifications is very bare bones. And that's exactly the best way to describe a lot of mechanics in this game: barebones.
Your companion quests, side quests, even the main story quests, enemy types, weapons, clothes, armour, mods... there's just enough of said mechanic or feature.
Which is hilarious, because there's a huge variety of consumables and junk items. Too much even. To the point that it's a pain in dick to specifically search for an item. There are multiple consumables that all have the same exact effect. Be it + to mind/body attritube. Or +1 to personality, but -1 to 3 other stats. +25% health.
DAMNIT, you need only 1 item with said effect, not 3 or 4. So your consumables become a confusing mess.

Which leads me onto the menus. There's no sort option to seperate heavy/medium/light armour. Or to seperate light guns, heavy guns, 1 handed melee, 2 handed melee. Or a lock feature to stop you selling/scrapping certain guns. You have to be very meticulous in your menus when you're faffing around with gear. It could certainly be improved, it's one of the worst I've ever encountered in a game.

Now, let's talk about the space map. You can travel to certain planets or satellites. But most of them are a *1 mission* area, which you won't have to visit again. Specifically, there's maybe 3 huge areas to explore (mostly hub areas) with 1 massive world, 1 large world and several small hub spaces that won't take long to explore. AND THERE ARE PLANETS ON THE MAP THAT MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU COULD GO THERE LATER, GIVING A FALSE SENSE OF VASTNESS.

That's why it took me only 21hrs to complete this game. completing all but 1 mission (I botched a mission due to the order I did a specific set of missions in, no biggie though).

Sorry to unload my disappointment with this game. It has fun gameplay, I enjoy the companion abilities and orders you can give them. The story is quite well written, along with the character dialogue. It's such a beautiful and extraordinary game. But I feel like it's lacking in nearly all aspects.
I was raging about it being a "Game of the Year" contender. It certainly puts Bethesda's FO and TES series to shame, that's for sure. But I don't feel it reaches the heights of FO:NV. They tried to copy a formula but somewhere along the line they fell flat on their face. I would love a sequel where they improve. DLC or any form of expansion to this game would be insulting UNLESS they're going to improve all those areas I've mentioned.

I did enjoy the game, it was fun and nearly a day well spent. And looking forward to eventually owning a little Sprat plushie. IF THEY EVER MAKE 'EM!

It's like when The Division 2 came out and got an extra couple of points because it wasn't Anthem.

It took about thirty minutes from hearing "Fallout-like game from the team that made New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity" to discovering it was on the Epic Games platform, then still saying "Shut up and take my money".

The game is your standard FPS romp with the ability to tactically slow down time to some degree in combat for a few seconds, which is explained in game as a side-effect from being thawed out after decades of cryo-sleep. This is set against a heavily-corporate-themed space western. (In this sole regard it is like Borderlands, ramped up. It works.) Over the course of the adventure, you'll experience other VERY not-quite-Fallout aspects. There's a companion system which lets you carry a couple of bullet sponges with you wherever you go. They all have backstories you can help them resolve for extra xp. There's stats, a perk system, inventory to juggle, locks to pick, machines to hack, and many, many conversations to blunder through morally ambiguous choices with dialogue trees. Let's be honest, there is nothing "ground breaking" about this game, but there are some interesting design choices.

In a curious repudiation of the current trend to have giant massive sandboxes with points of interest to discover and explore, there are instead smaller maps that are dense with content. Over the course of the game you visit more than a half dozen or so planets, moons, and stellar entities, but all of the play areas are only as big as they need to be to present the content you are expected to complete. One of the later maps is a very small sub-section of a city-- but nearly every other door leads to an encounter or is used in some side-quest or another. In short, there's a lot less frittering about the landscape in aimless wandering and more working on quests themselves.

Keeping true to its roots, you can also avoid a lot of pain simply by having adequate non-combat skills: being able to lie, persuade, and intimidate is just as useful as having a maximized weapon skill. Enemies can be avoided with enough stealth and hacking and lock-picking allows you to subvert otherwise harrowing encounters.

Consequently, since the game cuts out a lot of the fat, it's a significantly shorter run-through. I'm about 16 hours into the game itself, having completed 90% of the side-quests and optional missions I found. I've just passed "The Point of No Return", so I'm now up against what is presumably the last mission. The shortness works in its favor though, as if it were much longer, one would be prone to complain about the lack of monster, weapon, and armor diversity. You could level up to 30, but at 27 I've run into very few problems where a lack of skill points were preventing me from attempting something critical: you can bolster your skills via armor modifications and what companions you have tagging along.

If I had to do it over again (and I probably will at some point), I'd run it in hard mode. "Normal" was just a bit too easy. Ammo was always plentiful and I never felt as though I was particularly strapped for anything. As a result I never delved into the tinkering system to modify weapons, rarely used any weapon/armor enhancements, and never saw a need to use any of the endless piles of consumables that was dumped on me at every turn.

But it is fun? Yes. Where it shines is in the humor, the voice acting, the speedy combat. There's hidden secrets to explore and the trademark humor is spot on. Is it worth $60? No. I'd recommend it in the $30-$40 price point, but I have no regrets supporting this studio.

I know, all you are asking yourself is: Is this game better than Fallout 76? I've never played it, sorry.

I know, all you are asking yourself is: Is this game better than Fallout 76? I've never played it, sorry.

And, looking at the other reviews, of course you want to hear all about how "The outer worlds" compares to games that were popular 10 or 15 years ago. Well, believe or not, this game has a player character, and it's in first person. It also has guns that you can use to shoot people. So yes, it's just like Call of Duty 2, that you did like, back in 2005. But with better graphics.

Slightly better graphics that, at least on the pc, come with stuttering and pop-ups, especially after every kind of transition. You'll be glad to hear that those will happen no matter how good your pc is, it's a very inclusive game, and you and your high-end rig will no longer have to stand on the sideline while everyone has so much fun bickering about the performance issues. They are not too bad, though, at least if whatever you are planning to do doesn't require precision.

You know, like when you are aiming. Really, no problem at all, since enemies will come to you. In a straight line. Fire one shot, and it's like a magic spell that turns enemies into friends, creatures, robots, bandits, they'll forget their animosities and join together to be as close to you as possible. You know, like in that game you liked in 1997, Turok, or that game on steam that some kid made, with zombies in it.

No lootboxes, like in that game you all did like in 2018, but still a lot of boxes. You'll find everything you need in those boxes, including mods for your weapons. Not mods for the game, I'm afraid, like in that game you liked in 2006, Fallout New Vegas, but you'll only use shops because you have a limited inventory, and you'll spend a lot of time there since comparing weapons and armor and mods is just like in those games that you did like before someone had the idea that it doesn't have to suck.

You also have skills, like lockpicking, in case you looted all the other boxes in every place, including homes and shops. Yes, that should be considered stealing, but no one's going to stop you from doing that, since people don't really move all that much, not even to follow you around like in that game you liked in 2002, Morrowind. Guards have far too much work standing in circles and repeating the same three lines over and over again, so they can't be bothered. In case you still manage to get caught you can intimidate them, that's one skill-check that's guaranteed to work. Your skills might not prove to be that useful in other dialogues, since there's only three choices. You know, like in that game you did like in 2012, Mass Effect 3, except that it's not color-coded.

It's a science-fiction game, you know, like that game you liked in 1982, Zaxxon. With total, unrestricted capitalism, like in that game you did like in 1994, Transporter Tycoon. You can chose to be critical about that capitalism, or commit monstrous acts, or mix it up a little, like helping the hippies once and then selling everyone into slavery. It's deep like that.

Maybe you should also look for reviews that describe the game itself, it's strength, it's weaknesses, and where it has actually managed to be *better* than that game you liked in 2005, or even different. Where it innovates, what the actual story is, if it has interesting characters, what the quests are like.

And I can guarantee you, if you have played all the games that are just like this one, and you loved them, you will find this one tiresome, and why wouldn't you. It has nothing new to offer, and it mixes gameplay and story elements that do not necessarily fit together. It fails to find it's own ground, and while it's functioning on every level, you might have a hard time to care about anything or anyone here since you've been there, and you've done that.

It's a reminder that a straight story and open world elements don't always work well together, and that exploration and loot are not just depending on quantity, but quality. It shows that dialogue choices and skill checks mean nothing without balancing, and that characters need to be refined beyond the three "choices" that lead up to that one fetch-quest they give you.

A 10/10 game is perfection. This one is ok. It could be improved on every level. If you haven't played one of those games everyone liked in 2005, I would advise you to play one of those instead, but you can add +2 points to my score.

Many things are directly "inspired" from Mass Effect and Borderlands Pre-Sequel. But it falls short of either one or the other very much. Absolutely dead and non-interactive world, reminiscent in this sense of RAGE and RAGE 2 (rembemer the dead and boring towns in the games? yes).

It was a good game, really. Obsidian did a very good job making something that should appeal to the broadest audience without compromising their integrity. The universe they've created is astoundingly deep and intricate, the characters are all well thought out, the gameplay is fantastic, the gun play feels good, etc etc.

However this is where I diverge. I did not like the game as much

However this is where I diverge. I did not like the game as much as I thought I would.
I enjoyed it for what it was, but it just felt like more of the same. Go here, do this. Go there do that. Kill these enemies, collect this thing, follow the checkpoint marker, talk to this npc. It just felt like they took what made New Vegas really great, took out the not so good, and overemphasized what people thought was the best parts of it. The acting is colorful if samey, the guns feel good but sometimes they just don't hit when they should. Exploration is pretty okay, but the places start feeling the same over and over. The quests felt like something I would have had in Fallout. And so much more.
Don't get me wrong, you should try this game, but wait for some kind of sale or get it with the Xbox Game pass (I payed $1 and played at max on PC).

No matter what I did or how much I tried to get into it I couldn't help but become more and more bored as I played. I may come back to it one day in the future, maybe after some content updates.

Take note: I mostly play stuff like racing games, CoD zombies (NOT the multiplayer), Roller Coaster Tycoon, LOTS of Dark Souls (2 and 3), etc. RPGs were never my thing, but this was especially mediocre. I finished Fallout 3 in a day, what happened here?

Every aspect of this game is botched. Once you get past the hype, there is nothing that this game offers. Combat is too easy, skills don't matter, the story is painfully boring, you can beat the main quest in literally a couple of hours if you wanted to ignore the rest, etc.

This is a genuinely bad game. All of its predecessors are better, including even Fallout 4, which was also bad.

It's painfully obvious that Oblivion wanted to emulate New Vegas as much as possible when designing this game, but that really shouldn't have been a problem if it was done right. The game itself just feels so mediocre and lacking of any real substance.

The graphics feel like 2015, not bad at all but oddly and everso slightly dated for a AAA game. The storyline is pretty typical and not really noteworthy. Your choices feel like they do nothing besides give a few extra lines of dialogue from your companions/NPCs. The gameplay, leveling, and crafting is about equal to that of Fallout 4, if not a tad worse. The entire time I'm playing I keep feeling like I was waiting for the intro to be done with so I can really start to get into the meat of this game. But there is no meat. It's maddenly frustrating to keep waiting for it to get good, because it teeters on the edge of good but just never delivers, and then the game is over and you're just left super disappointed.

The worst part is that there were such high expectations going into this game, yet it really doesn't deliver anything worth remembering. I also feel like the majority of these 10/10 reviews are just people so used to spoon fed garbage from EA and Bethesda that when a game with no microtransactions and which actually runs and is actually finished is released people overreact and jump for joy. That is the base line standard for games, not the goal. I can't recommend this game for full price at all, not even for half price. Maybe in a few years when it comes out on steam and there's a sale for 10 bucks and you've also got a weekend of time to kill and apparently have nothing better to do then go ahead and pick up the game, but until then don't bother.

Even though the game is not open world but instantiated, the graphics is average at best with few stutters and FPS drops here and there; textures and models are ok but the maps are small, repetitive, not memorable and with very few NPCs.

Rocks and trees are sparse, they are all identical, 1 model per planet, and they don't blend in with the rest of the environment. The sky is awful, the clouds are very low res and blurry and they even managed to place them behind planets..how can a cloud stays behind a planet, I have no idea.

Cities feel empty due to the lack of NPCs, compared to games like GTA V or the upcoming Cyberpunk, they are laughable. The same goes for enemy locations, there are at best 4-5 enemies per location putting this game on par with that piece of crap of Fallout 76..even Rage 2 has a better enemy/location ratio and it is not instantiated like this one.

The character creation is on par with a 15 years old Korean MMO..you have 4 decent male faces (2 western and 2 Asian) and that's it, because the rest are too ugly to be fixed with the fews slider at your disposal..and of course you can't even swap eyes, nose or mouth, you can barely move them around..but guess what, you can put beards on female characters..and finally don't even think about modify the body of your character because you can't..not that really matters considering they didn't even bother to add a 3rd person mode..lazy and cheap.

The armours look ok, but there are very few models, at level 20 you still find the same models than you found at level 1. The equipment is ridiculous, you only have two pieces, helmet and armour..Fallout 4 had SIX pieces, Skyrim and Oblivion FOUR..this game has TWO..no gloves, boots, shoulders pads, bracer, jewels or some new original gadget considering it's a space game..nope, just two pieces..cheap, lazy and pathetic.

What about weapons..there are many models here, though their stats are always the same..they could have added some special bonuses to add some variation but nope. Also there are no explosives or grenades or mines, nothing at all, and you can bind only four weapons..similar games allow PC players to bind up to 10 weapons/items, this game allow you to bind 4..they went the cheap way even in this..it's a crappy console port.

Combat..melee is very basic, you can only swing your weapon or block, I don't think there is even a light/strong attack, let alone special abilities, and most of the time you don't understand if you have hit the enemy or not..you can hit en enemy three times and the guy doesn't even flinch, like nothing has happened.

Ranged combat is ok, nothing special or fun like Rage2 or Doom. The crosshair is offset for no reason..and you have only three types of bullets, light, heavy and energy..again they picked the cheap and lazy way, at this point they could have made just one type and call it" ammo"..

What about the enemy AI..it's dumb, very dumb: either they walk/run toward you or stand still. If you pick a long range rifle you can kill them one by one with zero effort.
There are also companions you can hire but their AI is dumb too..if they switch to a melee weapon and the next enemy is far away, they don't switch back to their ranged weapon but they charge all the way with their melee one..I have no words, really..also, at the moment, if you assign an helmet to a companion, you can't remove it..good job, did they even test it!?

Music and sound effects are ok; voice acting is great, very well done.

Dialogue are fine but the options you pick don't really matter most of the time..you have additional choices if your dialogue skills are higher, but they still don't matter because if you pick them or not the ending is still the same..either you accept what they want you to do or leave the conversation.

The main story is nothing special, honestly you won't give a damn about it.
Side quests are average, as usual go fetch this, go kill that, pretty standard and boring stuff.

The loot is very repetitive, same armours, same weapons, same consumables, same junk over and over..there is nothing exiting about it and after 1 hour of game you will already start to automatically pick stuff up with out bothering to check what it is.
They managed to make even hacking and lock-picking boring by not implement any mini-game..you just have to hold a button, might as well remove them completely.

What else, the UI is clunky, compare items is a chore, you have push a button to save the item you want to compare and them move over to another item and when you're done you have to go back to the old item to cancel the previous selection..they tried to reinvented the wheel and failed. Also there is no tooltip with descriptions and explanations when you mouse over stuff you don't know.

So..for a AAA 60 euro/dollar game it falls short by a big margin.

The choices provided to you in the game while seemingly vast aren't in the end as all of them lead down the same 2 paths, regardless of which dialogue choice you picked.

The companions storylines feel like there was a clear bias and favoritism by the developers. Parvati's storyline took up most of the time while Ellie storyline was the shortest and felt the most rushed. Sam had really none once you unlocked them.

Combat is just your average fps rpg with some differences here and there.

The outdoor areas tend to be too massive for their own good and for a game where you literally have to walk everywhere can lead to some tiresome treking while completely exploring the map with little to no reward for doing so.

All Dialogue NPC animations feel rushed as nearly everyone uses the same animation cycles for them, mainly being the "dead face" and "stiff body" ones.

I wanted to enjoy this game but after beating it and getting a good+dumb ending along with the secret one too. I just found myself thinking back and seeing as how i never really had fun with the game, i was bored playing through it and everything in the game was just so, bland. Review in long: a lot of people seem to be suffering from nostalgia blindness when they compare it to FO3 and FNV (one of which involved a plot line about a villain called "the antagonizer"), both those games had a bigger company behind them and had an established narrative and setting to work with so of course something new is not going to have as solid a base to build its story on and also... some of their stories were dumb and boy howdy were some of those quests tedious....cough cough sunset sarsaparilla star caps cough cough cappy in a haystack

on the subject of the story, its fun, quirky, very anti corporate and generally enjoyable and player dialogues never not been fun and you are usually given a good variety of choices. NPC usually aren't as fleshed out as they could be unless they're involved in a main quest and even then not always, but sometimes simplicity is better than over-complicating things and they're usually good enough to be entertaining or interesting. companions generally have pretty good story and motivation for their actions and all their side quests are fun and interesting.

environments are generally good but the buildings in some of the colonies can be a bit samey.... but this is explained and makes sense narrative wise and most main story areas and buildings show enough variety to be fun and interesting

Big criticism is the lack of enemy variety, two-three types of dude in "armour" with various colour pallet changes and four or five types of wildlife....

Guns and melee are alright, the variety isn't huge but it still provides enough to be fun and suit a range of play styles and are generally fun to use. and the mods can be pretty fun but i wish there was a greater variety
Best part: tinkering, you can spend money to upgrade stuff so if you add an expensive mod the gun can remain useful for longer
Worst part: breaking down guns means you break down mods, like early on when you're poor this is a real bugger.... especially because you find much better guns on the regular.

Armour choice is pretty lackluster at least in appearance, but its modding options allow for a great deal of playlist customisation due to their variety and the number equip-able

Overall its a good game with a really fun story and some nice characters.... but it needs a some polish in order to really shine as brightly as its lineage and in time will likely do so

It feels like a bad Fallout 4 DLC. After playing this boring-ass game, I have ZERO hope for Obsidian's future.

Spent far too long trying to like this game, I was on the bethesda hate train when this was released. Played it when it came out, didnt stick with me so put it down, every so often would come and try to get into it. Quite possibly one of the most boring plots I have experienced in an RPG, every character is stupid because they need to be for the premise to have any legs. The antagonists are so silly, I have seen Saturday morning cartoons I was more threatened by. Expand

In the hour or so that i've played this game so far, i've come to love it more than most games i've ever played. This game should be an indicator to bethesda on how to actually make a fallout game. This will probably take the cake on my game of the year award nomination. Expand

In a word: Disappointing. Obsidian was founded by members of Black Isle, people who made legendary RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment. The Outer Worlds is hot garbage by comparison. The combat is a step down from Mass Effect 1, the dialogue choices are extremely limited and the companions have 0 depth.

I've been a fan of Fallout since game 1, been a fan of all the Fallouts except for 76. This game is not Fallout, it is a unique game. To me it does not feel like a Fallout game. The dialogue (in my opinion) is intricate and unmatched in any game. The feel of the game while playing is so very much like Firelfly, that this could almost be called a Firefly simulator . If you like a great story with true choice, and you liked the show firefly this is a must have. Expand

This game is the definition of "Meh".

Obsidian were asleep at the wheel with this one.

This is a great RPG. The people who are rating it so low obviously were expecting something else other than a "Role Playing" game. It has great dialog, great characters, an interesting world and plot, and multiple ways to play through the game. It's weakest point is probably the gun play, but even that is pretty polished. If you enjoyed old school Bethesda before they got money hungry, then you will enjoy this. Between New Vegas, the Pillars games, and now The Outer Worlds, Obsidian has become my favorite studio. Edit - After playing for a few more days I am dropping from a 10 to an 8. This is because I am just having a hard time staying "into it". In Fallout I always had a sense of wonder and mystery and couldn't wait to explore the wasteland.....some of that is lost in the Outer Worlds. Still a really solid game, just not deserving of the 10 I had originally had it pegged at. Expand

This is game that was developed with love and passion. It has everything i am looking for in a RPG. The charter creation is top notch, dialog & character development is flushed out and the game play/gun play is engaging and fun. Anyone who loved FO NewVegas will love this game.

It's pretty good for what it is. A good single player experience that feels like Fallout but it's not exactly as in depth as I thought it would be. Outer Worlds does one thing an RPG has to do: respect the player's choices. The game is simple, but that is its appeal, the simplicity of a good RPG. Outer Worlds is amazing. It's a real RPG with choices and consequences, a living world, charismatic characters, freedom of choice. If you "destroy" a place, know that it will have consequences. The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
