    In a bold move, Team Meat has stirred the successful recipe of Super Meat Boy and has delivered a runner-type game in its sequel; SMBF. The procedural level generation algorithm seems to work wonders and the new art-style is modernizes the game. Very interesting ideas in the gameplay mechanics, and increased difficulty promise to keep you engaged for as long as you want to hone your skills. It never ends.

    Super Meat Boy Forever asks a lot of the player but also makes sure that they’ve got the tools to master its challenge while also being considerate enough to make each one approachable in bite-sized chunks. A perfectly-run level takes less than a minute and is divided up into sections that are rarely longer than ten seconds, but each second requires focus. And if that focus slips then a retry is instant with little time lost, making it easy to try again, and again, and again until Doctor Fetus finally realizes what a terrible idea it is to antagonize the Meat Boy/Bandage Girl family.

    So far I've played through the first 2 worlds in this game and I think that's as far as I'm going to get. This is an auto-runner in the vain of a mobile game. I now know that this project started as an auto runner version of smb1 for mobile devices before they expanded it for pc and console and it became it's own thing. If you enjoy those games you will probably love this, I dont. I bought this impulsively when I saw it for sale, not even knowing it was in development as I was a huge fan of the first game and have played through it on almost every platform it's available on. While it was downloading I learned that levels would be randomly generated, which seemed like a cool idea, though it worried me since we've seen 1000 times how randomly generated levels lack the care and bespoke nature of handcrafted levels, but I remained optimistic until I started the game and saw meat boy just charging full speed ahead with no input from me. I thought it was a demo or tutorial or something. Once I realized what kind of game it was I almost immediately turned it off, but I gave it as much of a chance I could and I can definitely state now that I hate it. These types of games domt appeal to me whatsoever, but i guess it's my own fault for getting so excited seeing a new meat boy title that I didnt do the research I would normally do. For what it is, its polished and is definitely the best game of this genre that I've played but that puts it at the top of a mountain of **** It only hurts so bad and I only rate it so low because its marketed as a sequel to one of the best platformers and best indie games ever made, and it is just not that. Very disappointing. As much as I'd love to support team meat I'm going to have to try to refund it from epic, cuz it's just not fun. Full Review »

So I made the leap of faith and just bought it without knowing anything about it outside of loving part one immensely for its challenging but always very fair gameplay. So, should you be excited for Super Meat Boy Forever? It depends on if you can live with the controls!

    First, the good:
    they kept the original comical over-the-top humor of the first Super Meat Boy, down to the last charming sharp line art, graphic settings can go up to 4K natively, making this super crisp. A perfect fit for the comic style art.
    The music and atmosphere are a great continuation from part one.
    It's super challenging again - read: throw your controller at the screen - hard (again).
    Levels are procedurally generated. Yes. No Sawblade will ever be the same on all your playthroughs.
    Controls are sharp and responsive....

    ... but you can only control jumping and ducking... the game does the "running" for you!

    It's an auto runner. Meaning you cannot control the direction nor even the speed of your meaty protagonist. Outside of being stopped by a straight 90° wall, there's no stopping. After trying to overcome my sincere dislike of this for an hour, I put away my controller in disgust. Seems I just cannot like the "Auto" anything genre, outside of its use on mobile phones with limited input options, and even then it's a big "meh" for me.

    A mobile iteration is which is what was intended for the game originally as far as I gathered, but losing the ability to directly control the protagonist on the "big platforms" with an actual controller kills the game outright for me on a controller-based platform like console or PC.

    I do like it's a side scroller now, and procedurally generated, too... but not being able to be in the driver seat here is just not for me.

    Sorry, Team Meat. I'll be getting this refunded for now.

But what Team Meat has done with this game, it is still just as difficult, you still feel like a ninja pulling off the controls to make it thru one of the levels, the replays are still awesome showing all your attempts at once. In reality you wouldn't even want to control meat boy in this because there are too many other things your mind is digesting to get thru these levels. Also I think it's awesome that a keyboard is a legitimate way to play the game now, and it works awesome. Gamepad is awesome also. Anyway if you like the first then this is a must have. If you like N++ then this is also a must have. I'm telling you. I was a hater maybe 3 hours ago lol. Great game, Team Meat, please don't make us wait this long for the next one!! Full Review »
