85% cutscenes, 15% actual gameplay. A huge letdown for me.

If you liked SMB and wanted more, play The End is Nigh instead. For some reason, they decided to make this an auto runner, and it makes the game that much worse. It feels more like a mobile game than anything.

So far I've played through the first 2 worlds in this game and I think that's as far as I'm going to get. Do NOT buy this game expecting SMB2. It is not that. I now know that this project started as an auto runner version of smb1 for mobile devices before they expanded it for pc and console and it became it's own thing. If you enjoy those games you will probably love this, I dont. I bought this impulsively when I saw it for sale, not even knowing it was in development as I was a huge fan of the first game and have played through it on almost every platform it's available on. While it was downloading I learned that levels would be randomly generated, which seemed like a cool idea, though it worried me since we've seen 1000 times how randomly generated levels lack the care and bespoke nature of handcrafted levels, but I remained optimistic until I started the game and saw meat boy just charging full speed ahead with no input from me. I thought it was a demo or tutorial or something. Once I realized what kind of game it was I almost immediately turned it off, but I gave it as much of a chance I could and I can definitely state now that I hate it. These types of games domt appeal to me whatsoever, but i guess it's my own fault for getting so excited seeing a new meat boy title that I didnt do the research I would normally do. For what it is, its polished and is definitely the best game of this genre that I've played but that puts it at the top of a mountain of **** It only hurts so bad and I only rate it so low because its marketed as a sequel to one of the best platformers and best indie games ever made, and it is just not that. Very disappointing. As much as I'd love to support team meat I'm going to have to try to refund it from epic, cuz it's just not fun. Expand

I was super excited for Super Meat Boy (taking) Forever to hit EPIC Store on Dec 23. So I made the leap of faith and just bought it without knowing anything about it outside of loving part one immensely for its challenging but always very fair gameplay. So, should you be excited for Super Meat Boy Forever? It depends on if you can live with the controls!

    First, the good:
they kept the original comical over-the-top humor of the first Super Meat Boy, down to the last charming sharp line art, graphic settings can go up to 4K natively, making this super crisp. A perfect fit for the comic style art.
The music and atmosphere are a great continuation from part one.
It's super challenging again - read: throw your controller at the screen - hard (again).
Levels are procedurally generated. Yes. No Sawblade will ever be the same on all your playthroughs.
    Controls are sharp and responsive....

... but you can only control jumping and ducking... the game does the "running" for you!

It's an auto runner. Meaning you cannot control the direction nor even the speed of your meaty protagonist. Outside of being stopped by a straight 90° wall, there's no stopping. After trying to overcome my sincere dislike of this for an hour, I put away my controller in disgust. Seems I just cannot like the "Auto" anything genre, outside of its use on mobile phones with limited input options, and even then it's a big "meh" for me.

A mobile iteration is which is what was intended for the game originally as far as I gathered, but losing the ability to directly control the protagonist on the "big platforms" with an actual controller kills the game outright for me on a controller-based platform like console or PC.

I do like it's a side scroller now, and procedurally generated, too... but not being able to be in the driver seat here is just not for me.

Sorry, Team Meat. I'll be getting this refunded for now.

I have been waiting for this game since the very first prototype images were posted by Edmund McMillen way back when. It disappeared for a while, I held faith. Ed left Team Meat, I held faith. The game never dropped the auto-run despite growing from a mobile only entry, I still held faith.

But man, this just isn't Meat Boy.

Before I get all negative I'll give my positive thoughts. The art and animation are absolutely superb. I was not bothered by the style switch, and I really love all the cutscenes in the game. The game hasn't lost it's vulgar and comedic mood, and keeping the intros to each world as a reference to other games was nice.
Despite the gameplay changes, the controls still feel tight and responsive, and the new warp zones are much more creative than the ones from the original SMB.

That being said, that is about all this game has going for it. The game is an auto-runner, which series like BIT.TRIP have proven isn't necessarily a bad thing. The levels are designed with auto run in mind, and gimmicks are still present and as sharp as always, but the lack of control in this case just feels awful. I loved SMB because I felt fully in control of the character, now I can't even change directions without aid of a wedge, and cannot stop without walls/conveyor belts. This lack of control really makes the game feel like it never really departed from just being a mobile game.
Auto-Running aside, the area where the game really falls off is the procedurally generated levels. Doing this was just a terrible idea. Random chunks every time leads to a non-existent difficulty curve. I had a level in World 2 that was miles harder than the entirety of the final one, for example. You also get into situations where two particular chunks in succession make the game near impossible, or just plain bad spawns (One chunk spawned me in such a way that I had to immediately jump or be killed by a saw). This combined with inconsistent collectibles just really makes it hard to want to collect much of anything in the game. I found myself just slogging through the long levels waiting to see the next cutscene.

Overall, this game is honestly a fine auto runner, just nowhere near a worthy sequel to Super Meat Boy. If you want a real evolution of the Meat Boy formula go play The End is Nigh. I got SMB:F for 7 bucks with an Epic coupon, and I wouldn't recommend paying more than that for this game. Don't go in expecting the sequel to SMB.

Its just an mobile game that they threw onto other platforms. At the beginning this was also announced as an mobile only game. The gameplay is slow, the hitboxes from the saws are bad and the Controls are unresponsive. Sometimes it even lagged and i can play doom on medium. The lag was not bad but it just just how mindlessly this was ported onto other consoles.

They turned Super Meat boy into an Auto Runner game.
1st super meat boy was a great platformer timing based game.
This...it's a f***ing auto runner. Never has a developer made a worse decision in making a sequel to their hit game. It also looks like a cheap mobile game. The first game had an inspired art style & design, this feels like they created the graphics in windows paint.

But here is what we are reading for. the gameplay.
What you wanted was Super Meat Boy
what you got was another autorunner clone

You are literally playing another mobie game this game is literally designed to favour after searching I discovered that it was originally a mobile designed game they decided to port to other systems and boy can you feel it in the controls.
Its clunky, its slow has annoying delay, has stupid respawn points ever 5 seconds for when you die (which you will do due to poor controls)
Also it will respawn you in dumb spots close to points that kill you so if you not lucky your are stuck.

Levels are randomly generated but also lazy at the same time, you can at the start of the game have levels harder than the rest of the entire game basically removing all progression which defeats the purpose of the world system.

They should have basically given a world theme option and just hit play.

The music is drivel you get some kids game style soundtrack from the get go that lacks any real depth compared to the original.Sure you get real music in the later levels but they sound like its an isaac clone than anything.

If you a normal user and thought this would play like old isaac it doesnt, unless you researched otherwise you wouldnnt know.

The store pages only advertise as "wow 7500 levels" "great soundtrack" "eclipses the original"
The trailers all are splice in a way that it looks like original isaac gameplay.

Theres no real replay value, the difficulty is artificially forced and behind a RNG factor. The game is first and formost a mobile game if you wanted Meat Boy play celeste, play the original.
if you want a fun autorunner play bit trip or any of the specifically designed ones that were made exclusively for that and play on their strong points.

If you want to play SMB forever any other mobile game like rayman forever etc

You've got the same characters, environments, and plenty of sawblades to go around, sure, but now it boils down to a procedurally-generated Bit Trip game with a coat of paint, and that is just sad. Simply put, there is none of the talent and charm that was present for the original, and this game feels soulless as a result. I don't believe Edmund, Tommy, or (especially after the drama) DannyB were involved at all. What a sham, and a shame. Expand

This turns the whole gameplay into just a boring timing reaction game instead of giving you, as the player, some opportunity to make up for bad moves or try to improvise with unusual ideas. It feels such as you are never actually in control, just trying with trial-and-error to get through the world as some player who is there for some ingame character you cannot identify with as you got no real control.

The fact that the levels are now semi-autogenerated is something which I also strongly dislike as there can be parts where even after a lot of trying no really good way can be found to master it, and the game does not give you any hints by the level design, which was also much better solved in the first game in my eyes. There I had the feeling that I just knew what I was doing wrong and now needed to figure out how to make it better. In SMB Forever I just feel like I am doing something wrong which I cannot say what I am doing incorrectly, just that I am. It is so annoying and not in a good way where you want to get better, but in a way where you want to get a refund. Or to make it short: The difficulty balancing is off, way off on what it should be.

What I do like is the fair price point of about 16€ (Austria) in case you can enjoy the day (I don't/didn't), the overall art style and how the gameplay feels (i.e. very smooth frame times, good reactions to inputs).

    Dear Team Meat,

You usually need to identify the strengths of a game before doing its sequel. (Is SMBF even a sequel ?) Super Meat Boy has settled itself as a reference in the platformer genre for 3 main reasons :

-Artistic direction. The game sits astride cute and gore graphic designs in a very unique way. It's well put together, pretty and appealing for some reasons. I'll never forget the tears i shed while watching the first boss death cinematic. Watching these piles of squirrel corpses really hit me hard. Moreover when these tears reached the bottom of my face. They were touching a large smile. That's when my 12 years old self finally understood i was a psychopath.

-Difficulty. No need to argue, SMB release was definitely a pivot for the game controller market with the amount of controller broken over some dark world levels.

-Maneuvering. SMB air control was one of the most satisfying mechanics ever designed in a video game. You clearly had that feeling of velocity and momentum. Super Meat Boy was the kind of game that got you to stick your tongue out while enjoying feeling like an incredible minced beef ninja.

Team Meat. 0ne out of three of these aspects made it to SMB Forever : Artistic direction, well done.
However, the maneuverability is soporific making the game closer to a long ass QTE than a platformer. As for the difficulty, i sincerely couldn't tell as i didn't force myself to play this game more than one hour. After that amount of time i simply quit, disappointed.

SMBF isn't a sequel, it is a disheartening lazy attempt to make a new genre of game and i wouldn't recommend it. I'll however salute the well put together intro cinematic that got me hyped up and brought me 10 years ago in the incredible OG SMB universe. That and the iconic "SUPER MEAT BOY" menu screen shouting are pretty much the only good things this game has to offer.

The problem with the new Super Meat Boy is that it’s not the old Super Meat Boy. We have waited a decade for the sequel and it turned out to be an autorunner, which is not necessarily a welcome surprise. Two buttons is all you need, which makes CMBF very easy to grasp, but limited control over the protagonist can be maddening, especially that the game is even harder than the original. Having said that, the developers managed to squeeze a lot out of the simplified control scheme, and while I understand the game disappointed many fans, I still recommend it to those of you looking for a serious challenge. Super Meat Boy Forever feels completely overtaken by time. The game is inferior to its predecessor in every way. The biggest problem is the fact that an autorunner like Forever leaves much less control to the player. The levels and bosses in Super Meat Boy Forever are therefore more annoying and frustrating than fun and challenging.
