so disappointing, im done with bethesda, i cant believe they had so much money and so many years of development to make a great game and came out with this, now i have no faith in them making something good again

And remember folks about 5-6 months ago they were trying to just sell it and not put it on gamepass. I had a gamepass and i tried it. I can't imagine the disappoinment on the people who payed the full price. It's a fraud imo. What a joke! Expand

Bethesda and their magic that no other game can do.
Just a premature review now, but oh boy, this might be the best Bethesda game (until Fallout 5 comes out) so far.
The atmosphere in Starfield is just phenomenal, the soundtrack is just bomb (Neon and Cydonia for example), and the graphics are really nice (except the faces of the irrelevant NPCs and the water), but the rest, phew, Neon

In Starfield The Lipsyncing is great and in 3rd person your character is firmly planted to the ground and perfectly positioned. To finally make 1st and 3rd person options equally viable ways to play. From the first mission on Kreet I was hooked absorbing all the environmental storytelling about the Terrormorph. And then joining the Vanguard and getting an Aliens 3 styled Quest right from the start. The game is incredible. Todd Howard and his fantastic team really made the game of a generation. And if you would have said that their first new IP in 25 years would be a space game, I would also probably laugh because obviously it would have been either a new Fallout game (which only came out 2 years later) and then the next Elder Scrolls game. At the time, this was Their bread and butter, release an Elder Scrolls game, the release a Fallout game. Boy would I have been so embarrassed now if that had happened. Of course 2016 is when the rumors began with the copyright of the name Starfield being made and the subsequent subreddit being created 7 years ago in September 1st (the day Early Access started for those of us who bought the Premium or Constellation editions). 2018 brought the reveal at E3, and along the way we were drip-fed more info between 2018 and 2022. Now, after all this time it’s here, and it’s worth checking out.

This game, make no mistake, is not perfect. It had some of the usual Bethesda jank. It doesn’t look the best, it doesn’t run the smoothest, the character models leave a lot to be desired at times, and boy oh boy do some of the systems feel like they were lifted out of the now 12 year old Skyrim, tweaked for this setting, and plopped right in to this game. Creation Engine 2 feels old. And the Exploration, well, let’s just say No Man’s Sky or Star Citizen it is not. But that’s okay, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be good, and this game is definitely good.

If you come into this game expecting something like Skyrim or Fallout in Space, and without the aspirations of being a No Man’s Sky or Star Citizen killer, then you will likely have a good time. The Main Story from what I have played of it so far is good, and I will leave it at that to avoid spoilers. However, side content is the name of the game here. Sometimes I feel like I can’t go 10 minutes without getting yet another side quest or activity to do that is added to my list of side quests and activities I have yet to do. The content just seems to never end. Some of these activities and side quests it can be repetitive. However, others will take you down interesting rabbit holes and following them can be rewarding.

Now, if we move past the quests alone, you also have hundreds of planets to explore, and while there are boundaries and other things that break immersion such as not being able to fly down to the planet on your own, it isn’t all bad either. The landscapes you get to actually visit are larger than the map of Skyrim in all the the cases I have seen, and you can go to multiple on each planet (I believe the max limit is 4-5). Once again, this isn’t No Man’s Sky, this is a BGS game, and it’s already taxing enough on your system. Now, if the exploration of this game doesn’t seem all that great to you, the combat is pretty decent, better than any BGS game before. You can of course find many amazing and powerful weapons in the world, or you can research mods to improve stock weapons or change modded weapons (the term mod here is different, as I mean you can customize your weapon with add-ons that improve the weapons stats and usefulness in certain situations). The enemy AI isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to have a decent time in combat. Speaking of research, you can research a number of things for crafting and outpost buildings, using resources you find and collect in the world to complete the research. Use this research to your advantage to craf items to use to restore health, cure any ailments you might have, whether it be physical bodily harm inflicted on you or illnesses that you might receive. Or maybe research and craft items to use for base building and go build an outpost to keep your NPCs at and also use to generate money. Even create cargo shipping links between outposts on different planets.

Speaking of, we can’t forget the shop building. While I haven’t gotten far enough to do either outpost or ship building, what I have seen of it from others looks fun and I can’t wait to get late game to where I am earning credits to do these sorts of activities.

Finally, let’s talk bugs, polish and performance. This game is demanding, it needs powerful hardware to run well, and even then even the best of the best computers can struggle at times. The limit to FSR2 only without mods also hurts performance for those who are on Nvidia cards. Outside of these concerns, performance can be decent with the right hardware. As far as bugs go, there are some, but wow, there are wayyyy less than what we had in previous BGS titles, and hopefully this trend continues for BGS. Overall, based on my rather brief playthrough so far, id give this game a solid A-. If you have Gamepass, give it a shot, it’s included with your membership after all, and if you love it, go to Steam to buy it so that way you can get full mod support.

The main story is incredibly dull and short and while some side stories were interesting, the one that interested me the most simply wouldnt progress because a key NPC refused to move where they were supposed to, least buggy bethesda release they said, but the bugs are definitely still there.
The gunplay is passable, its not bad, but its nothing amazing when we had games like Doom, Destiny and Borderlands making gunplay so intense and fast paced, it certainly does not help that the AI is incredibly stupid, both the enemies' and your allies', with enemies main difficulty coming from how spongy they get at the higher difficulties.

Exploration....its lacking, first of all theres no actual space travel, i dont care if someone spent 7 hours to get to a JPEG of a planet, they couldnt land on it from space, they still had to use their spaceship as a fast travel hub, which is what it is most of the time, even when exploring the actual planets, theres only a few that are handcrafted and interesting enough to explore, the randomly generated ones are barren and have nothing of interest, which defenders of the game will say its because of realism, but that same realism is entirely forgotten when they get asked where are the ground vehicles, it is definitely odd that in a game with spaceships, we somehow dont have any form of ground vehicles for traversing planets quicker and the loading screens, this game has SO MANY loadings screens, you better have an SSD or half of your gametime will be on loading screens.

Theres potential, but its not quite there yet, i have heard of performance issues, however i had none on my rig, so i have no comments to say about that, pick this up in a year or two when the mods start to add the content it needs, until then, its a pretty big letdown considering who made it and the backing they had from microsoft.

The game is okay, but not much more. It doesn't live up to the hype. Generic Bethesda quests, the most fragmented space I've ever seen. It looks good, but it comes at the cost of countless loading times. You can't even go up a ladder without a loading screen. There aren't too many bugs, but they occur regularly.

One of the most ambitious and interesting games I have ever played. I suspect there is 1000's of hours of content in this game. I literally have barely left the first star system and already have 40hrs into the game. There are what looks to be hundreds of stars and over a 1000 planets, moons, space stations, etc to visit. Do not believe the metacritic score. This game is at a minimum a 9/10

The game isn't perfect, and has a few faults that I consider pretty glaring. But even with this, the game is a LOT Of fun to play. Most of these glaring issues are things that I imagine will be patched out early in the games life. some of the MOST egregious issues include:

-Poor PC Performance (FPS dips to ~30fps on my machine should not happen, but in Starfield it does sometimes.) -NPCs

-Poor PC Performance (FPS dips to ~30fps on my machine should not happen, but in Starfield it does sometimes.)
-NPCs do not react at all if you aim your gun at them, shoot around them without hitting them, etc.

There are also a few design choices that I are not issues for me personally, but may impact other's decision to buy. Namely, the lack of a minimap (which I turn off in many games anyway) or in fact a functional land map of any kind. It doesn't end up being that bad outside of cities where a map would be nice to see the various building locations. For everywhere else, things are spread out and POIs are trackable via your scanner.

But outside of these flaws, the game is well written with a great soundtrack, has cool lore and fun RPG Mechanics. I am fully enjoying the game and will see many, MANY more hours in the future (Especially when the modding scene takes off).

If you were hoping for some deeply intricate space simulation game, if you were thinking of No Man's Sky with more content, if you were thinking Elite Dangerous as an RPG, this is not what you'll get and you will be disappointed. If you were hoping for a classic Bethesda RPG in the vein of Oblivion or Fallout 3, with a space theme thrown on top and some interesting new features, you'll be beyond thrilled.

I think the story is well made, I think the exploration has good moments alongside moments of mysterious isolation. I will say this: the game isn't revolutionary. It isn't breaking new ground. It has elements that are dated. But I do not require a game to be the newest and best to enjoy it and rate it highly.

As a final note: Many professional reviewers emphasized "Getting to New Game+ as quickly as possible". I understand why they say this, having done so at their request, but I think it was OVER sold. You do unlock a small amount of additional gameplay content when you get to NG+, and it definitely has Lore reasons to do it. Personally I think it's "the right way to play" (whatever that means), and I think the reason it's pushed so heavily is because many people, like my brother, didn't beat Skyrim's main quest until like 10 years after Skyrim's launch and in the case of Starfield it would be a huge loss to never experience NG+ in the game. BUT if the thought of playing strictly to the main story and moving briskly through the main story upsets you and would limit your enjoyment of the game, then it's definitely not something that should stand in the way of you enjoying the newest Bethesda IP and having a blast in Starfield.

    1) The narrative of the quests and companions are not engaging enough. That is to say, most of the game is quite boring. Occasionally there is an interesting character or interesting event, but it's not enough
    2) The performance is not good and the game doesn't even look that good
    3) The combat is too bare bones. It's just too boring. The AI is bad, itemization isn't interesting, etc.
    4) There UI and systems are too much of a mess. I have to Google things WAY to much. There needs to be WAY more tutorials.
    5) The planets are too ridiculously similar to each other and too ridiculously similar to Earth
    6) Surveying the different planets is too ridiculously tedious and unrewarding. So are building outposts. There not being any kind of grav bike or other land vehicle to use is also very stupid.
    7) The NPCs are so ridiculously unrealistic and dialogue is poorly done. This is especially embarrassing when you compare it to works by Larian and CD Projekt Red

I also saw a couple of professional reviews that said some worrying things , about the game failing to be a proper Bethesda game , due to how many planets , they weren’t filled with content , but also failing to be a No man’s sky due to everything being behind loading screen.

I’m glad to report they were wrong.

It’s a Bethesda game through and through.
You’ll be bombarded , by such a high volume of side quests , and side quests between the side quests , that you’ll explore a lot of what this universe has to offer (and it has A LOT to offer) without even noticing.

There is such a massive amount of handcrafted content , and planet locations…That you’ll really see no reason (or have no time) to spend 20 minutes running on a straight line to see if there are invisible walls somewhere.

On my 68 hours of gameplay , I haven’t once stumbled upon this infamous invisible walls , and I have been exploring a lot.

I’m not saying they aren’t there , I’m saying that the only way you will break your “immersion” on starfield , is if you are looking for it. Lookign for flaws , trying to look behind the curtain.

I repeat I’m 68 hours in and i feel I have barely scratched the surface.

I haven’t even got serious with the mining stuff.

Starfield has achieved to scratch 2 big itches simultaneously for me:

I have been wanting an space game.
And I have been wanting a Bethesda game.

And starfield is good at both things.

-Jumping on a rocky moon with low gravity , watching the stars and galaxies above you and suddenly see the gas giant with its huge rings appear above the Horizon, while starfield’s amazing soundtrack sounds in the background? Check.

-Having space fights , or boarding enemy spaceships and taking control of them? Check

-finding abandoned space stations/casinos/research facilities etc floating outside random planets , docking to them and having amazing 0 gravity fights with pirates or spacers or whatever is inside them?

-Rol playing whoever you want to be and However you want to be and create your own story like only Bethesda games let you? Check

Having a gazillion side quests , well written , original and non-repetitive ? Check

    Amazing atmosphere and story? Check

Good side characters and voice acting? Check

    Good graphics? Check

    Good ship creating and customization?

And most importantly, am I having a lot of fun and about to end this review without spell checking it Because I want to jump back into starfield?

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
