The whole game is a soulless patchwork of the last 10 years successes in open-world games (Cyberpunk, RDR2, NoMS...) without any ideas where it's really going. Some side quests are ok, but the real point of the game is making you build ships and doing endless procedurally generated maps for ressources. Fun from exploration (traditionnaly found in ES games/Fallout fames) or Roleplay are now totally inexistant. It's basically a "single-player" mmorpg with over-written romance options. Expand

Special powers you get are rehashed shouts from Skyrim. Combat is slightly improved with gun handling but also lacking features that other Bethesda games have had in the past (sneak takedowns, executions, and guards being alerted to gunfire/attacks). The gameplay is pretty much Fallout 4 without VATS.
The exploration in this game in my opinions fails in comparison to their other games. In Skyrim or fallout you can see something in the distance and walk there. In starfield, every planet might have 3 or more locations that are worth going to but to get there you need to fast travel between those locations and fast travel between planets. Everything feels segmented to where it shouldn’t even be called an open world.
Facial animations are dated and companions are lifeless and seem to have no personality.
The Choices you make seem to have little impact to the world around you. Everything just seems boring and bland.
The side quests are hit and miss with some having genuinely interesting stories and lore. For a Bethesda game it is passable as a good rpg where you can sink a lot of time into. But they seem stuck in the past. Since Fallout 4, we have had other game studios make more interesting games where the rpg genre boundaries are pushed (Witcher 3, Baldurs Gate 3, and even Cyberpunk). I loved Skyrim and Fallout 4, but in 2023, Bethesda doesn’t seem like the industry pushing company that they used to be.

Amazing game! I don't know what the other reviewers are playing but this is one hell of a polished Bethesda experience. I have not been so invested in a game since I was in my late teens early twenties (Skyrim). Just play it, it makes your keep thinking about it after your play session is over too!

The game suffers from numerous things it executes on poorly, and almost no redeeming features to make up for it.

Story wise the game is extremely boring and despite what some people say doesn't magically get better after 15 odd hours of gameplay.

The skill tree feels extremely limiting and punishing.
If you don't take lockpicking as an example there are many quests that you simply CANNOT finish.
In comparison to other games like BG3 and even older BGS entries this feels extremely shortsighted and gives you a false sense of choice in regards to building your character.

The environments feel bland and a person can really tell it was generated instead and not polished afterwards.
The enemy bases are literally copy pasted and in around 40 hours of gameplay I probably saw the exact same enemy structures 5-6 times.

The inventory system feels unintuitive and feels more like a chore than anything else.

Surprisingly, the ship customization and ship battles really surprised me because they are half decently done.

The graphics are unfortunately extremely outdated for a 2023 release.
Character faces look outdated and overall looks jarringly bad.
The game optimization is horrible, I am struggling to get consistent FPS on low graphics , while I can play any other modern game on medium/high graphics without any performance issues.
The Creation Engine is really starting to show it's age, both in graphics as well as in combat.
The FPS experience somehow feels very similar to Fallout 4 , and at this point feels inexcusable for a AAA release.
The sheer amount of loading screens are jarring and it makes it almost impossible to get immersed in the game.

The game would have been significantly better if they scaled the game down to 10 planets and instead hand crafted major areas on each planet for us to explore.
Instead you are limited to a randomly generated generic block to explore for each planet.

Overall I have played roughly 40 hours of Starfield , and don't think I'll ever be picking up the game again.
The game tries to do too much and ends up as a half baked RPG and a half baked space exploration game.
I would rather go replay another BGS title to get a better RPG experience or rather play No Mans Sky for a better space exploration game than play a game that does neither well.

Starfield absolutely takes my breath away at every turn, from the stunning visuals to the space exploration and the seemingly endless amounts of well thought out content in this game, I feel like I could play Starfield for many years to come and never get tired of it. Each city feels like its own game, I find myself getting sidetracked from the main story very often by random side quests that usually lead to something extremely interesting.
I haven't felt this way about games for a long time now; I feel like a kid again staying up all night not wanting to stop playing it.
I'm already 80 hours in and I'm just scratching the surface of what this game has to offer. It's a phenomenal game in just about every way.
Alright that's enough writing, it's time to jump back into the Starfield!

    This game is so disappointing.

Three major flaws in the first hour : Controls, Music and Story. Controls are junky, like you are playing counter-strike, you walk too slow, you run too fast. Sprint is alright for combat but we are 2023 and this cannot sustain comparison to other developers not even their own past published games like Fallout. It really feels like a half-life mod.

The music is so bland and boring, I dont know why you guys lost Jeremy Soule after Skyrim, that soundtrack was ASTONISHING, but everything Inon Zur do sounds like Crysis and its not good.

The story is so much copy-past formula of past titles with no soul, like your reading a chapter but all that is written is the name of the chapter. This is a MAJOR FLAW.

From then my jaw dropped when I got into my ship with excitement and I was pumped to hell when I saw the animation when you get to sit in the cockpit and then boom, Gravity hit me like a ton of brick. You dont even lift off your ship, you dont fly it in the air, in the atmosphere, you dont travel with it, you dont explore with it, you do nothing in that cockpit except shooting random pirates sometimes between cutseen/loading screen and even that they manage to scrap it. How can I hear pirates in their own ship saying childish stuff like : This isnt over yet !!! ??? Really ??? I knew from that point that this game isnt getting the passing grade. Im not even talking about bugs. Why have this awesome mechanics to build ships if you do nothing with your ship ???

So you explore planet and put your helmet on. Where is the helmet ? This is first person game, and you see nothing. No shield, no reflection of light, they didnt bother to make you feel like you are wearing it, there is nothing in the screen, like you are a rover with a mounted camera at 5foot of height that looking right and left. They could have put the HUD in the shield of the helmet that would have been so cool, but nothing here. Then you think you should becarefull about the time you spend here because there is no atmosphere and your supply of Oxygen is limited. Again no, there is no supply of oxygen in Babyfield, you just use it like stamina and it comes back, same with fuel when you use the map to load the cutseen to travel to another planet.

Im leaving this here. No worth it to talk about bugs, the story or character or procedural stuff or anything else really. These were MAJOR FLAWS.

I dont know whats happening at Bethesda, too much Yes man, or family vibes where nothing is really important and there is no quality control and nobody is held accountable for anything serious. I dont understand, this game is a regress from their past titles.

In space, you need to use trusters to escape the gravity of whats bigger than you. When you are past the threshold, you are ballistic. This isnt a jet, you dont need to burn your trusters to move around. If there is no air, there is no sound too.

Nothing here makes me believe they are sci-fi lovers or space enthusiast at Bethesda, really?

I get the technology isn’t quite there yet but I think the bit off a bit more than they could’ve chewed in that aspect. This is not up to the standards Bethesda has set in past games, and frankly, isn't even up to the standards of a modern space game. The world feels dead, the main cities feel empty, you never truly feel emersed in the game as there are LOTS of things that take you out of it (will be noted below).

Loading screens galore, going into your ship, taking off, entering a building, we are in 2023 and with the spec demands of this game, THAT is what you give us? Flying your spaceship is clunky as well, the controls are not intuitive, trying to move power from on area of the ship to another requires you to be some sort of dexterity wizard. Trying to move the ship as well, I can't tell you the times I've hit up or down arrow to move my ship (like in MANY other space games) only to find, I'm now going above normal speed or at a complete stop (because the mouse moves your ship up and down (ugg).

But let's say you skip the space portion totally (it is a space game and yes, you have that option...why? I don't know). The shooting in the game is fine, but it's not something we haven't seen 100 times before. The AI is mind numbingly stupid. You can run right up to them and they will look around the corner as you shoot them point blank range.

Let's talk about companions....the Robot you start the game with is ANNOYING. He is always getting in the way, and breaking emersion. Trying to sneak into a place, well your big robot isn't following suite, he's just standing there with a big bullseye on him. Trying to take cover in a small corner...well he'll stand in front of you (LITERALLY in front of you!) so you can't hit the enemy, then you have to move heaven and earth to try and get past him to get out of the area. The game would be better without the robot and frankly all the other companions as well. None of them are worth the aggravation of having to avoid them once they are on your ship.

The questing? Well, let's me just tell you the 1st quest I got when I arrived in my first main city, was to get a cappuccino for a woman.....yes you heard right...go buy a coffee. spent 75 credits and she gave me 400 credits FOR A COFFEE!

I'm running the game on high with a decent computer, 13th gen i5-13600K 3060 Graphic card and SSD HD and 32 GB of RAM. Didn't have any crashes but also, this graphics are nothing special. Outside of the few mandatory "show" scenes in the game, the NPC's (those that are in the game as "citizens") look like they are from the zombie apocalypse, they faces and bodies on them are from straight up 10 years ago. Even when you are tasked with following a named NPC, they can't even get them to walk up the stairs correctly. The one NPC I followed was gliding up the stairs taking them two at a time. It's the small attention to detail like that, a game like this should not be having trouble with.

I have over 300+ hours in Skyrim, I've played and enjoyed Fallout4 and New Vegas, this game isn't even in that ballparks parking lot, much less the same league. Luckily I'm playing on Xbox Game pass on PC, and even with the game being free for me, It will probably be uninstalled by this weekend.

There is no reason...NO REASON, to play this game over a game like No Man's Sky. THAT is a proper space game that feels alive and has endless amount of content. After being spoiled with BG3, even more spoiled with the free updates over the years for No Man's Sky, this is a gigantic disappointment and one of the most disappointing game releases for a game I was looking forward to I can remember. It's so bad, it's honestly making me question if Bethesda can recapture the magic of Skyrim in the next Elder Scrolls Game, or if this is a sign of things to come.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
