I encountered very bad optimization. The graphics are terrible, and playing at 20 fps on low is terrible. I completed the same Baldur's Gate 3 at high 60+ fps on my system. Starfield is a terrible game in terms of optimization

this game is unbelievably, irredeemably boring. todd borrowed popular game mechanics from other space games, stripped them of depth and nuance and introduced them into starfield.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. very underwhelming for me, some good points but overall a lot of contradictions in the project. I expected a skyrim in space but despite some noticeable improvements here and there the game clearly lack the substance that made its predecessor so great.

narration: probably the best part of the game, dialogue trees were interesting but the tone of the adventure is very inconsistent, you can go from over the top space demigod savior of the galaxy to job interview simulator in the blink of an eye. Being at the center of everything in a region of Tamriel is a thing, being at center of everything in the whole galaxy is another, especially since the game tries an more down to earth approach compared to mass effect or destiny for example.

Graphics: The props models and the skyboxes are more than good, everything else is completely outdated, the animations, the textures ( the trees wtf?), the npcs, the particles, the lightning. Nothing to explain the amount of loading screeens in the cities. I also dislike the art style that i found really bland but that's a more personnal issue.

Combat: Bare minimun, despite a certain amount of offensive tools, the lack of depth in the gameplay, the absolutly TERRIBLE ai and the lack of enemy variety ( more than 90% of the enemies you encounter are space pirates or color swaps with the same behaviour) make the combats extremely repetitive and broken.

Exploration: worst part of the game for me, a very big downgrade from other bethesda games, the ships become rapidly useless, you end up with a barren planet generator with no care to be found, generic and repetitive assets, checklists to make the game artificially longer, no lore or environmental narration ( the best part of skyrim and fallout 4), way too long walking distance, no vehicles, boring random missions , no sense of discovery, no details, no soul, no care. The 1000 planets is impressive as a marketing tool but it's absolutely useless in the current game design as you can encounter most the available assets with a fraction of those planets.

conclusion: the game feels outdated, the direction of the game seems more interested in reaching marketing sell points than making a consistent, solid and modern game design, by trying to be everything the game manage to be mediocre at everything.

Starfield is a masterpiece. I traded in my PlayStation 5 because I was tired of walking simulators, don't get me wrong I love a good walking sim and am not ashamed of it. Starfield just does what other games on my old platform don't, it gives you pure freedom of exploration.

Eu sinto, bethesda. Eu sinto

If you like the Bethesda formula, you will really enjoy this game. I've finished one playthrough, and I am in new game plus. One bug experienced (disappearing head of a companion).

The main quest line is a little short for a game this big, the side quest lines are phenomenal. This game isn't "revolutionary" - but it is the most expansive Bethesda experience to date.

This game attempts many things and accomplishes very few, and the early game is an appallingly slow burn, forcing you to play many hours before you start to realize the fun parts will never arrive. Ground combat is Fallout 4 but slightly less clunky. Space combat feels like a series of unwieldy boxes whirling around above a planet, about as fast paced and exciting as helping an old lady across the street. Any kind of space flight besides this is nonexistent, space exploration consists of loading screens and takeoff/landing cinematics. The other part of space exploration is running on foot thousands of meters across a fishbowl map on a generic planet or barren moon, to find the same copy/pasted outpost you discovered on the first moon you visited, with all the same items and npc's in the same exact places. Outpost building is an absolute joke. You would think it would be good, being the third iteration of Bethesda's building system, but in SPACE. It's not, it's 4 prefab structures, 2 landing pads (1 of which doesn't work) and a bunch of large stuff you have to build on the ground outside because there's no nice foundations to build and build on and they don't fit in the very generic premade hab shapes they give you. Followers are uninspired and forgettable and dialogue is limited to Good or Edgy. The only real effect of this dialogue is getting your boring pack animal companion to complain at you for not being enough of a Lawful Good Paladin type. The background and character building is vapid and thin, with my outlaw Professor being universally recognized for having briefly worked on a mining crew at the beginning of the game before getting railroaded into the main quest, or rather, the main series of identical fetch quests that lead you to the lazily written and plainly uninspired conclusion of the very forgettable main story. I paid a hundred bucks to get this in Early Access in spite of having Game Pass because I believed in the strength of the games Bethesda used to make, but the only memorable thing about this game is that I had to play well past the refund time to get the full scope of how bad this Triple-A blockbuster game turned out to be. I fear for the disaster that Elder Scrolls 6 is likely to be, and Bethesda has finally lost me entirely. After many games and thousands of cumulative hours, I won't day one or early access anything from them anymore because they can't be trusted. Expand

After about 30 hours, I love this game. This is a Bethesda game, so there will always be a bit of jank, but that also means we have a big sandbox to play in.

There are no city maps as well so you just have to memorize every single city and if you want to find something specific, you just have to go into every part of the map until you find it or try to look it up online and use clues from the picture to find the location. There are no markers to help you remember where things are very few fast travel points within cities. Even those aren't useful because it's not really clear where they are in the context of the map unless you memorize it. So basically if you don't have a mission marker, it's almost not worth the trouble. For me, I was willing to deal with the loading screens but this made it just not fun. In a game like Skyrim, you never had to fast travel anywhere and you would encounter plenty of enemies and discover lots of and side quest along the way. Often, I didn't mind this as you were leveling up and gathering a lot of loot. The gameplay loop was quite fun.

However, in Starfield you are always going directly from point A to point B so there isn't really much time to stumble into discoveries accidentally. Quest often will take you to 2 to 3 different planets which means 15 to 20 different menu screens to fast travel. You will also have to sometimes make multiple jumps to get to your location and then get stuck in some boring space battle.

I often found myself spending more time in transit, inventory management, and not being sure where to go then I did actually playing in the game. I suggest waiting another year or two until they fix it.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
