Space exploration looks similar to both, but the UI seems a bit more interesting in Mass Effects with that little spaceship instead of watching cutscenes. The issue here is that those games were released in 2007, 2010, and times and prices have changed. There is not a single good reason for having very detailed useless items like sandals or sandwiches instead of programming the procedural generation to have something interesting inside objects such as caves, because most of the time there is nothing in there except for resources, which are only really good for building outposts to mine even more resources. Furthermore, objects such as enemy output are copied and pasted onto different planets, making the player feel déjà vu. Exploration is good for people who enjoy real life because planets are almost as empty as in reality.

To sum up, the resources in this game were invested in making a very detailed, empty world.

When it comes to the main story companions, it feels like someone wanted to make them too unique, which results in another unrealistically diverse crew.

It is not Gollum or Red Fall, so the score is as divided as the player base.

The game isn't bad, just dated. If they had released Starfield 10 years ago, I would say this game was groundbreaking. Nowadays compared to games of the same theme, it is not innovative.

Is it really too much to ask of a game set in space, for it to let the player actually travel through space?

    Truly disappointed.

Disclaimer: I've wrote 170 game reviews on here for fun, being as honest as I can be. I think I've scored two games 10 and two games 0 in that time. So when I give Starfield this score and review, it is not 'review bombing' - it's embarrassing to see media outlets time and time again dismiss user generated reviews because they're generally actually more reliable than their scores.

    On with the review...

I was excited for Starfield. Not to the extent most were - I didn't expect Game of the Century - but I expected a really fun experience, Skyrim in space as people say.

I even bought the special edition headset and controller because they're incredible. I have zero regrets doing so either.

So yes, it's disappointing to say that Starfield is... mediocre. In many ways it is actually Skyrim in space, and if that was the aim they technically achieved it. But it's done with no heart, soul or innovation. It's a relic, a game from ten years ago, clumsily dressed up and disguised as a modern one. But it's like plastering over a wall that's falling apart; the cracks quickly begin to show. And boy does Starfield have cracks.

NPCs look and act like robots. They don't feel part of the world. Even the voiced primary cast have a vague empty feel to them. The cities suffer from uninspired design - either painfully bland or cookie cutter. They get a bit better than the first one you'll bump into, which isn't hard as THAT one almost feels like a practical joke in how generic and beige it feels, but it never gets to the territory of 'good'. Indeed, The Outer Worlds - a game this borrows heavily from and is inferior to in look, story and character - smashes Starfield apart in this respect.

Yes, the game is 'big'. But 90% of it is lifeless. Literally. Barren planets acting as resource deposits. Again, The Outer Worlds - smaller, more focussed and hand crafted - is leagues beyond what Starfield offers in terms of curated content, because it's a more even experience throughout.

The writing and cast... no, actually, I won't criticise the voice actors too much. It's done well for their part. But the writing... it's Maguffin 101, you largely know what is going to happen throughout inside 15 minutes and there's very little turn of pace or direction. And to again compare to The Outer Worlds, nearly everything is so serious - yes, it occasionally 'lightens up', but it feels like a side-mission of levity to the main mission of deadly serious, boringly delivered lines. Without Skyrim's 'one voice actor voices like 200 people' novelty, this really, really starts to grate.

Combat is, for the most part, good. Gunplay - a concern of mine ahead of launch - is surprisingly very decent. The levelling system, however, isn't. It's... not pointless as such, as the perks work, but it's all delivered at snail's pace and in terms of combat perks can mostly just be straight up nearly ignored.

The UI is classic Bethesda - terrible. But I could have lived with that personally as it's par for the course. The lack of mapping, however, isn't. It's an almost gamebreaking design fault, absolutely shocking and I can't for the life of me understand why they went in this direction. It's supposed to be a sprawling open world RPG - how can you NOT give the player mapping?

Speaking of RPG, this comes to the crux of my issues with Starfield. It's decidedly an average looter-shooter first, and an RPG second. Fresh off the back of Baldur's Gate III and Sea of Stars, Starfield REALLY feels limited in its role-playing aspects.

Is it a 'bad' game? No. There's a lot of fun to be had, it does a lot right. But it's a disappointing one overall. From the makers of Skyrim and Fallout, over a decade after the latters release and with the company surely learning from the mistakes of Fallout 76, I simply expected a lot better. This is going to be a game that review sites will cringe when looking back on the 9s and 10s it's been rewarded out of sheer hype, because it's quite honestly not even close to that score. It's a 4/10 'Bethesda' game for me, but a 6/10 'actual game' - I expected so much more and got, what the kids call, a 'mid' experience. To this day, I can pick up and play Skyrim for a few hours and have a great time; whereas I pick up and play Starfield and I'm looking for reasons to carry on after 15 minutes. Therein is the difference.

There are the same bugs as always, the same stiff faces and animations as always, even the idle lines of NPC's when you walk past are the same like in Skyrim and Oblivion or Morrowind. At some point I was even expecting one of the guards in New Atlantis to complain about his missing sweet-roll or tell me that he used to be an explorer as well...

Another negative point is the "your journey" factor. Elder Scrolls or Fallout games have this sense of moving forward, this journey your characters takes. Even if you travelled back and forth between two locations it still seemed meaningful, still had a purpose. In Starfield there are loading screens...
Whatever you do, there is a loading screen. You can travel to the far end of settled systems and it still doesn't feel like you're on an epic journey cause there are just loading screens. Hell, there even is a loading screen to get straight to your cockpit if you can't be bothered to walk across your own ship.

I know that you don't have to use fast travel and just do it the "old fashioned way" but honestly, there are occasions where I don't even know that I will fast travel. Once you discovered a place then you will fast travel there. You have to go out of your way to travel to discovered places the "normal way".

The game is not all that bad or a lie like some make it out to be, but it is less than what I would normally expect from Bethesda and definitely not worth the £60, hence 6/10.

I love Fallout 4 and Skyrim, but this is not a good game.

This would have been a decent game in 2010 with regards to animation, graphics, story length, the little to no interface+display customization, bugs and so on. This is like Outer Worlds x Skyrim x ME: Andromeda, only worse in all categories. Anyone with a sane mind will not say this is better in any single way than Andromeda

This is like Outer Worlds x Skyrim x ME: Andromeda, only worse in all categories. Anyone with a sane mind will not say this is better in any single way than Andromeda which is now 6 years old. Those games appear to be 10 years apart, they almost are, just the wrong way around. Outer Worlds too is like 4-5 years old now, not a single thing in this game beats that, and that game had it fair share of problems.

Imagine publishing a game they have used this much time on, resources, past achievements, money, huge studio and you forget to add brightness and gamma sliders??
You forget to add a field of view slider, something games in 2008 had, it would literally take them 5 minutes to implement it and enhance the experience for all players by a lot and those who suffer from motion sickness will actually be able to play.
You forget that almost all people want to play this in fullscreen with optional DLSS, free to choose HDAO/TXAA/SMAA and hopefully have a game this bad looking above 60 fps on a 4070tix13600k, but thats just too much to ask so we'll keep it windowed borderless running 50 fps and a medium/high/ultra slider instead different methods of anti-aliasing.
Their most notorious problem is their garbage engines and carry weight / running stamina which makes a game made for hoarding absolute torture. They probably had this problem with FO3 in 2008 and every other game since, how can they not learn?

Keep in mind that farming ores on planets is useless, you will never use the materials, they will weigh too much to carry, keep in mind that exploring planets is useless, there are close to zero if not zero npcs there and you have to run massive lengths most of the time over encumbered, not able to sprint for more than 3 seconds of the time and maybe you're lucky enough to have a talent in jetpacks with so bad physics it's actually better to leave it behind because of the weight, only to find an empty cave with materials you cant carry or an abandoned base full of loot weighing too much to carry. The combat system is as stiff and broken as Skyrim, FO4, there is nothing different at all. The weapons feel awful, all of the 20+ different I have tried. Oh and the main city looks disgusting.

I have looked forward to this game for probably 3 years and what I got is an old looking, unpolished, perhaps too vast, empty, soulless, stiff, disappointing intro, tons of too long waiting animations, the wierdest mix of characters I have ever seen, 300 years ahead in time a colony that escaped earth is still talking with indian, african and east asian accents when speaking english which would obviously be the main language for hundreds of years (Hogwarts Legacy all over again), full of bugs, incredibly rough/uneven gameplay, garbage animation and graphics for an incredibly steep price and wait time. This should have been labeled as an Alpha project and cost 20-30 usd at most. It reminds me a lot of Fallout 76 only on a much larger scale and with npcs, sometimes.

This game is Fallout 4, an 8 year old game only set in space. The flora, fauna and rock/shaders on planets are actually at times worse than FO4, at least there are modders that upscale the textures and fix the mountains of problems there, which we can only hope for in the future here.

Hm, I wonder what I actually like about it. The dialogue scene close ups with people can be good, the idea of the game in space is good, but that's just in theory. The character customization was decent, some of the armor can look decent, some textures indoors can look good. Those who designed for example the landscape on a planet vs inside a building must be so far apart in talent it's mind boggling.

Of course Meta Critic gives this game like 8-9-10/10 "incredible space journey, game of the year" though when the community reviews comes out tomorrow I'm sure we're looking at 4-5/10 depending how biased and realistic/optimistic you are.

Will force myself to try it some more but not really enjoying any of it so far.

Title: A Promising Start: First Impressions of Bethesda's Latest Xbox Title

    Score: 7 out of 10

After playing it for little over 44 hours, I've delved deep into the world of Bethesda's latest Xbox release. With over 30 side quests, a handful of main story missions, and a good chunk of exploration, I'm ready to deliver my initial verdict.

    Performance Woes (-1 pt)

While the game offers an immersive experience, I couldn't help but knock off a few points due to performance issues. The absence of DLSS support is a glaring oversight, making the game's performance on my high-end rig, equipped with a 5900x processor, a 3080 graphics card, and an M.2 SSD, less than optimal.

Promising but Deceptive Advertising (-2 pts)

One gripe I have is with the misleading advertising that promised limitless planetary exploration. The reality, though immersive, does have its fair share of limitations and barriers. While it doesn't affect the core gameplay, it's worth noting.

    Exceptional Side Quests and Characters

Where this game truly shines is in its side quests and characters. The portrayal of characters and the narratives surrounding them are nothing short of exceptional. I've encountered a variety of companions, each with captivating backstories. Vladmir, I have yet to engage with, but the existing companions have already left a lasting impression.

A Solid Addition to Bethesda's Lineup

Overall, this game is shaping up to be one of the top titles in Bethesda's Xbox library. The delay in its release has clearly paid off in terms of refinement and polishing. In my playtime, I've encountered only three minor bugs, a testament to the developers' dedication.

In conclusion, while there are performance issues and some deceptive advertising, Bethesda's latest title shows great promise, especially in its characters and side quests. With a few more patches, this could easily become a must-play for Xbox gamers. Stay tuned for the full review as I continue my journey through this captivating world.

It tells you what you need to do to be a good person, and what you can't do if you want to be a good person. What you need to do to be accepted in society and what's going to get you cancelled. It wants to control every aspect of who you are and how you present yourself to the world, and it's all supported and enforced by the establishment.

People who identify as "woke" have a rigid parochial set of values and beliefs that they've ignorantly mistaken for objective truth. A system of values that they believe are fundamentally good and morally righteous. A set of values that they're convinced are undeniably correct and necessary to human happiness. A set of values they're so committed to that they've adopted a militant and grossly intolerant attitude towards anyone who happens to have different values or anyone who happens to believe things other than what they themselves have mistaken for objective truth.

The existence of people who don't share their values makes them so furious that they've convinced themselves that these are bad people who need to be shut down and punished through a deeply malicious combination of lies and intimidation they've attempted to impose their personal values on everyone, smearing anyone who says something they disagree with as sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic and any number of other "ist's" and "ic's".

Through doing this they've destroyed many people's lives and brought us all cultural impoverishment and social decline. Moreover through a rabid commitment to an entirely irrational gender ideology which they've convinced themselves is morally righteous they've allowed predatory men to encroach upon women's spaces all around the world and openly engage in child grooming in public.

They champion diversity but they don't like diversity of ideas. They champion Liberty, but they don't like freedom of speech. They preach about social justice on a phone made by a child slave. They use the expression "Words have consequences" entirely oblivious to how Fascistic that sounds. In short they're hypocrites of the highest order. They are all of those things they claimed to hate the most. Bigots, Authoritarians and Bullies.

In reality this game is average it does some stuff right, does some stuff horribly and the rest is mediocre filler content. If you really want to know whats good/bad from someone who is indifferent, here it is.

    The Good:
Combat is cool/ varied weapons and boosting through shooting is fun
Different equipment/stats makes for some cool builds
Alot of missions/side mission to sink your time in
    Art style is cool
Ship building is fun if you can digest the ui

    The bad:
Horrible UI all over the game
You spend about 30% of your gameplay time in menus (maybe 50% if u engage with crafting/ outpost building mechanics)
Exploration is Instanced loading screen galore (and a lot of menus)
    Stupid encumbrance system
    Outdated graphics
    Bad Optimization

    The Average:
    Meh main story
Many missions are either fetch quests or go kill someone
Choices are either meaningless or has no real effect on story progress
AI is just A without the I
less bugs than Bethesda's history but still there

As some one who is not a 'PlayStation fanboy', This game is straight up mediocre and at its best its fine. It is nice having a game that me and friend are playing at the same time but experiencing it differently so we're able to help each other and just talk about it but that doesn't save the basic game design at play so just go play Hi-Fi Rush as it is WAY better.

I can even usually ignore the Bethesda "jank" that often accompanies the launch of their games - but something about Starfield's core mechanics seem inherently flawed as well, and I'm not sure I could even explain why. Whether it was the underdeveloped enemy A.I., the poorly designed base building (a giant material storage container can only hold 150 lbs of items, while the safebox in my bedroom can hold infinite), the emotionless (and ugly) character models, the lackluster main story quests, or just the general lack of adventure - Starfield ultimately proves to be an underwhelming RPG that fails to deliver on most of the promises Todd Howard and the marketing team pushed.

That is not to say that there's nothing good here, the weapon design and shooting mechanics are a vast improvement over their past games, the ship-building is very intuitive, and the scenic landscapes of distant planets and galaxies can be absolutely gorgeous! I just wish I had more of a reason to explore them

    Biggest scam in 2023
Boring gameplay, outdated design, poorly optimized performance, 2010's graphics, retarded npc ai.
And all of this they try to hide it with edited gameplay, paid gameview, and blame you couldn't afford a 4090.

They could have done a way better job, But Todd didn't care he wants another cash cow. AI that is more A than I, 30 fps shutter show for modern gaming, large amount loading screens, shallow main story, Bland and laggy title screen, invisible walls. I'm giving it a 2 because it runs better than launch at fallout 76. Todd you suck

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
