Terrible optimization, doesn't even have a good graphics. Refund! 3060 ti doesn't deserve this.
Once again thank you Starfield, you taught me "again" No Pre-order

If you want a game about space/planetary exploration, then go play The Outer Wilds. If you want a game with space exploration that focuses on lore and base building, then go play No Man's Sky. And if you were just hankering for a great rpg regardless of the setting then, Baldur's Gate 3 is fantastic.

Update: I don't own any console from microsoft or sony, and am just a PC player with several hundred hours of Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallount NV and Fallout 4. Loved these games, lived without problem with the bugs but I can't live in a glorified maze of multiple rooms filled with minimaps, which this game is.

For instance, there is no minimap and only fast-travel for a good reason: the core design of the game cannot allow it.
As the Creation Engine 2 is going to be used for TES6, I'll pass from now on on all Bethesda games and I doubt that mods will fix anything (I play the vanilla versions anyway).

Not only the developers and more precisely Todd Howard, are outdated and live in the shadow of their former glory, but their main working tool is working on outdated paradigms, concepts and algorithms.

The reason why this game has such high hardware requirements exceeding those of CP2077 to run barely decently is that at its core, it's pushing the antiquated algorithms of an antiquated game engine to a level it was not designed to handle.

I am glad that some are happy enjoying this game, but in the same time, I think they are quite foolish trying to convince the world his is the 8th wonder of the world of gaming. It is simply not that.
    End of Update.

I'm glad I got a refund for this product. It's using the update of an antiquated game engine, which results in severe limitations breaking immersion. The game is simply not fun, not as advertised and it doesn't even meet basic standards for the underlying concepts like O2/CO2 to measure exertion.

It's like a rehash of previous failures, but magnified.

The reason why insane hardware requirements are necessary to achieve decent performance (and I didn't have any issue with my rig) is the outdated game engine. This game engine is designed exclusively to function as an update of the previous one used in 2006 products, so everything is built around its limitations: that's why we have loading screens for the pseudo open world which is in fact a series of minimaps, etc.

Again, thanks to Steam for honoring the refund policy and Shame on Bethesda for their broken promises. As for the corporate shills reviewing the game, I'll believe them when they release the gameplay session they use to build their review as it's literally impossible to explain rationally the disconnect between customer reviews and the journalists.

I have bought the game, gave it a fair chance but it's real garbage, it' worth 0. Even if the score is decent and the aesthetics are better than previous productions, and to date there is no microtransactions.

Same outdated engine. I could already tell from the trailers this was going to feel like a 2007 game with that clunky mess that is the creation engine. This however.....space filled with boring hillbillies we've seen way too

Why are all these terrible writers infesting modern game studio's with their boring unimaginative crappy writing. Almost all NPCs are soulless. Andromeda, WoW, D4, and now this. You can barely call these people writers.

BG3 I guess showed even more clearly how a game like Starfield is just outdated. Talking to random NPCs in starfield is excruciatingly boring after almost every NPC being worthwhile to talk to in BG3.

Inventory looks bland, world looks bland, devoid of atmosphere. It's like they tried to make a Mass Effect epic grand universe and only filled it with boring humans.

Todd "The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time" Howard's arrogant boasting of spending a $200 million budget on a 500 people team for 25 years of development is yet another blatant lie considering the game doesn't have the sandbox infinite universe that NMS provides, nor the excellent storytelling, character development and narrative content that TOW managed to deliver, not to mention the humor. Hell, Starfield doesn't even have a proper ship-flying mechanic built into the game, considering it's a damn space FPS/RPG.

The game is constantly cockblocking your immersive experience with loading screens in places where you would not expect to see one since Mass Effect 2 was released in 2010, a testament that Bugfesda doesn't care to update their gaming engine to modern standards and prefers to dump those resources in creating 100 variations of coffee mugs, books and cafeteria trays, or writing and incessant amount of completely pointless NPC dialog lines and an absurd amount of meaningless errands disguised as quests.

Speaking of technology and its implementation, the game was released without Ray Tracing and DLSS, which took the community 1 day to create a mod for (go figure), with UI animations and interactions capped at 30 FPS on console and 60 FPS on PCs, which the community again took 1 day to increase to 120 FPS. On the UI part, the menus are convoluted and difficult to navigate with a 2-page list of shortcuts that change from one menu screen to the other. The main game UI, even though it is minimalistic and beautiful to look at, is badly designed with everything on the screen having the same white color and no animations. Clearly whoever worked on this, had no idea about color theory, visual perceptions such as depth and contrast detection, and generally how human vision and perception work. They tried to copy the UI of Elite: Dangerous, but again failed, hopefully, someone will create a mod to fix this in the near future.

Last, but not least: the bugs. There are a lot of bugs: from NPCs flying in the air, to ships ejecting you in the middle of space, to NPCs talking with their back at you, to items disappearing from your inventory, this game has it all. I don't think any amount of additional development could have fixed it, the game could've been released in 2025 and still would've had the same issues. The problem is with internal resource allocation, feature prioritization, and technological innovation and implementation.

In all honesty, Microsoft cannot save this company no matter how hard they try. The only way to bring Bugfesda on track is to completely reset and restructure them, starting with removing Toad Howard from any decision-making position. Every game he spearheaded in the last decade ended up a complete failure at launch and a blatant cash-grab during its roadmap, which sparked constant controversy and PR backlash.

Yikes, what a terrible experience. Bethesda with another banger of lag, bugs, and glitches. They tried to wrap it in a pretty space setting, but they even failed at that, as the game looks like something out of 2010.

Some of these drones excuse was a predictable "they haven't played the game" or "these must be Sony Fanboys" on valid criticism for the state of the game in 2023. Because tthat's the only way they can justify to keep kneeling down with their mouth open for whatever Todd Howard is giving them. Nothing made a game studio looks worst than it is than Bethesda's and XBOX's rabid fanbase that are so starved of exclusive game that they are willing to whore themselves for this trash.

It's Bethesda's game, with all its jankiness, incomplete features, and design decision that made you scratch your head in a 2023 AAA game. No brightness and no FOV sliders in 2023? 30 FPS menu in 2023? Absolutely lazy game design with an outdated graphic engine. Not to mention unspired story, dead eyes NPCs, and random **** of bugs that it absolutely hilarious to see people still defend it.

It's funny that Larian moved Baldur's Gate III release ahead of this fearing competition when Starfield still couldn't hold a candle to the epic masterpiece in term of concurent users, sheer review score, and amount of content. That was a passion project and it showed. Baldur's Gate III animals have a better personality, animations, and emotions than your main story companions in Starfield. If this is the best XBOX can muster for their exclusives, they deserve to be dead on the water for any future console wars. Pathetic garbage of a game.

    2. Overt political agendas in a futuristic world that just happen to identically match political agendas currently being pushed in the modern day. This is not how you immerse players in a mysterious futuristic world. This is how you pull them back into reality and break their immersion.

    3. Insultingly poorly implemented AI that doesn't react at all when you point a weapon or shoot near it.

    4. Clunky, intern-level dialog that seems like it was written to appeal to 11 year olds living in the early 90's.

    5. Boilerplate-level questing. It genuinely seems like the developers were given an strong directive to intentionally avoid entertaining the player.

    6. New game plus means playing the game 10 more times except without caring about drops because you already have the best stuff. Except you don't even have a compelling reason to play through the game even once.

A lot of people have spent years deciding they're in love with this extremely mediocre, bland, soulless game and are currently in a state of severe cognitive dissonance.

This game is completely and utterly devoid of the sense of magic and wonder that makes games like Baldur's Gate 3 overwhelmingly eclipse it in sales and review scores. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure how this is getting 10/10 with all the performance issues, how terrible FSR 2 looks, the constant loading screens, the empty space gameplay, the rushed stories you're thrown neck deep into without getting to develop your character before being thrown into these major events (for example, the Vanguard after your first mission suddenly you're now a spy for the UC Navy going in deep cover against Crimson Fleet). The sound has issues as when other people start talking, everything overlaps and the conversation you're trying to hear becomes too quiet to hear. Subtitles get overridden when additional conversations are happening. Surround sound gets too low unless you're literally right up in the characters face. Ship building was way overhyped and very limited with only a handful of manufacturer parts and not all match if you try to intermix them to create something unique. Also experiencing constant game freezes and I have to force close the game, luckily it's in full screen windowed so I can alt-tab to the task manager but that's another issue is no exclusive full screen so other apps won't keep popping up over the game. Leaving this 0 because the game’s unoptimised and millions of gamers can’t even play after they’ve bought it.

I'm having a blast with Starfield. Don't be misled by comparisons to Fallout or No Man's Sky. Expect to spend a few hours learning the game loop without preconceived notions. Once you get into it, the experience speaks for itself.

No HDR, raised black level, washed out colors (ugly color filters), low quality NPCs and main characters, low quality lighting and reflections. Boring story. Loading screens all the time. No space travel. You can only walk on planets (no other means of transportation) etc.

Game is bad optimized and soulless. If you expect depth like No Mans Sky you won't find it here, if you lexpect a fantasy world like skyrim or a realistic space sim you won't find it. What you will find is lots of bugs and an empty story that you won't care about.

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
