Not only can you run around the open world to progress through this amazing story, you can go through the cyberspace which acts as little bite sized levels that help you get the chaos emeralds. You can go fishing, just run around and have fun, level yourself up, speedrun, there's so many things to do. The combat feels so satisfying to use and just leaves you feeling good. And the story/dialogue is all amazing, characters feel like themselves again. And the dynamic between the pure evil eggman and his daughterly type love with the naive sage is amazing, it's just so wholesome. The super Sonic bosses are epic too, everything about this game is amazing Expand

The story is the best out of the whole franchise, and the voice acting is very good, Roger Craig Smith did an amazing job as the voice of Sonic!

The music in this game is incredible and it's the best music in the entire franchise!

The Super Sonic fights against the Titans were amazing and some of the best fights in a video game!

Thank you Takashi Izuka and ESPECIALLY Morio Kishimoto who created this MASTERPEICE!

+ Combat is well made. The boss fights and mini bosses in particular are phenomenal. Simple enough to understand and get accustomed to, but deep enough to be engaging and to express yourself. Seriously, linking together a string of well executed attacks and combos makes you feel like a bad-ass. It's the highlight of the game for me.
+ Controls feel really nice, especially since you can customize them to a great degree. From button mapping to the smallest things like Sonic's physics and stats.
+ Aesthetically & graphically, the game looks pretty good.
+ I love the music A LOT. They're very atmospheric in the open world, and the Cyber Space and boss tracks are legendary. Give it a listen.

    - The game's collectible economy is very unbalanced. It's very easy to get huge amounts of progression based items, purple coins, rings, etc. with very little effort. Some tweaks here would help immensely.
    - Pop in can get pretty bad at times and I've had some frame rate issues. Overall, there are a fair bit of technical problems here that warrant a patch or two.
    - Cyber Space, while somewhat fun in their own right, aren't as deep, engaging, or fast-paced as older titles that focus on the boost formula action stages as the main draw. They just don't compare to Unleashed, Colors, Generations, or Forces imo.

Won't say anything on story rn since I'm not done with it yet. But everything else makes Frontiers well worth the $60.

However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

P.S. The soundtrack is FIRE and they got Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on it. 100/10 banger OST.

Also, note for the PC version: The game uses Denuvo. It also doesn't support Unicode names.

The way the characters interacted with each other was my personal highlight as it was such a fresh start from the last decade on how they were written, THIS is Sonic's true world. How the world has been portrayed has left me amazed with all the previous games referenced to make it all an official cannon and not a cheesy reference like previous games have done. (even a Sonic Boom reference was mentioned which caught me by surprise, makes me wonder what they will do with that in the next game)

Only problem with the game was the cyberspace control, and i was going to mention the reuse of previous games for level design but it was KINDA justified from the last island where sage basically mentions that, so I felt like I couldn't really complain as some stages where original, just wish there was more of them.

But I will just say they better see these user scores over the critics because WE know what we want in a sonic game WE are the ones who know sonic better than anyone else so WE know what makes sonic good.

Cheers to a bright future for sonic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is so weird of a game, but it's GOOD. At times it feels less Sonic-y but then reminds you exactly what it is. It's a massively more mature (not nsfw) installment in writing and acting. Ian Flynn did an incredible job with the story and dialog. The performances are a stark contrast to the over the top and annoyingly cartoony voices like Sonic Heroes, etc.

It's FUN. The combat rules and feels great, the speed and leveling/upgrade system feel awesome. The ability tree is simple and cool.

This is the best installment in years. This feels like what Sonic Adventure/2 could have been with adventure fields.

My only complaint is that cyberspace levels feel a tad short, but even then I think if they were longer it may be less fun.

If you love Sonic, if you love open world action, if you love platformers, I highly recommend picking this up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's got some issues. Controls take some getting used to, there's a bit of physics jank, and a bunch of the game's ideas and concepts don't seem implemented as well as they could have been. But that doesn't matter a whole lot when the game is fun. It's fun running around and doing all the little platforming segments and quests, or just running around for no reason. The minibosses are interesting to fight, and the major bosses are epic badass showdowns where they just give you Super Sonic and a sick metal track and let you go at it.

Assuming they don't do their usual strategy of starting from scratch for every game, there's a lot of potential for improvement for a sequel.

The story is amazing, and the deepest dive into Sonic lore we’ve had since the Adventure era, which I really appreciated. Sonic lore is deep and rich, and I’m glad we’re back to exploring it instead of ignoring it.

Gameplay was something I was worried about when the first trailers and showings dropped, and I was very happily surprised to find that the Open-Zone formula is near perfect. The player finally has the freedom they crave as Sonic, and can traverse the zones and game as they please, which is a very welcomed change of pace.

There is a very rich feeling of progression to the game. As you play it more and more, upgrading Sonic's stats and learning the Zones and the different means of exploring them becomes second nature. There's a level of fluidity here that we've never seen in a mainline Sonic title, and it's extremely satisfying.

The amount of content in the game is also a huge surprise to me. The initial showings of the game had me worried the game was only going to have large open areas with nothing to do in them, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The fact that my first 100% play through of this Sonic game was 21 hours long is amazing and goes to show just how much there is to do here.

All in all, this game is amazing and I highly recommend everyone give it a chance. It really feels great knowing that this game is as good as it is!

Welcome back, Sonic. We missed you!

Open world is really nice and interesting to explore, puzzles are not tough but not boring either.
Characters are finally alive after over a decade.
Cyberspaces are cheap rip-offs mostly from Sonic Generations, but some of them are still fun to play.
Combat system is really good, finally Sonic has something more than homing attack.
Main bosses are INSAINLY good! Music as always on fire.
And the story is finally good aswell
The game's lenght is finally over 3 hours. It took me 16hrs to beat the game for the first time and another 16 hours to beat the game for 100% (max levels, all maps unlocked, every fishing is on 100%, all achievments, all levels, all memories collected, secret boss) from start to finish.

The only downsights are very poor final boss, leveling up by 1lvl at a time by coko, broken physics in cyberspace levels and their overall poor design. And very disapponting post-game content (there is none)

But SONIC IS FINALLY GOOD SINCE GENERATIONS. And we need to show our support for developer team! And also for the people who are responsible for such a great vocals and soundtrack overall. AND THANK YOU IAN FLYNN!

This Game is the best 3d sonic game in my opinion. The "open zones" are a great new addition to the sonic formula and the story is fun. The best parts of the game is the bosses and the soundtrack. The biggest problem with this game is the pop-in, but its not enough to deter the enjoyment of this game.

The cyberspace levels were the only real let down in that they used visuals that are stale and the controls were a lot worse feeling than the open zone. They were still fun to play, but they felt like they could have been a lot better. Since they were such a back seat part of this game it wasn't a hugely negative impact on the whole experience though.
Overall, I would recommend this to any Sonic fan, and really anyone who is even a little interested in Sonic.

Alright, let's first start with the graphics. The graphics in this game are amazing, as a game should be in this era, this is definitely better looking than Sonic Unleashed which came out basically 14 years ago. Yes, it could look a bit better but knowing that SEGA had to make this game also run on the Nintendo switch comfortably is probably why. The Controls in this game in the Open ZoneAlright, let's first start with the graphics. The graphics in this game are amazing, as a game should be in this era, this is definitely better looking than Sonic Unleashed which came out basically 14 years ago. Yes, it could look a bit better but knowing that SEGA had to make this game also run on the Nintendo switch comfortably is probably why. The Controls in this game in the Open Zone (Open World) handle amazingly, also considering that you have a slider for the open world controls, you can customize it to whatever your liking is, my only gripe is that there's hardly any momentum in this game, and sonic is almost magnetized to the ground in some capacity, but knowing the developers probably had to limit sonics controls because they didn't want speed runners to beat this game faster than they already can. The controls in the Cyberspace stages aren't nearly as good as the controls in Generations or Unleashed, but considering they're supposed to be bite size like special stages, i can somewhat understand, since a lot more time was probably spent creating the open zone world. The characterization in the game is probably at its best, character interactions seem the most real the characters have ever been in a while, most likely how to Iann Flynn wrote them, let's hope he continues to write the stories for the next games. After beating the game there isn't much to do unless you haven't already collected all the memory tokens on every island and caught all the fish, which can in fact, take a while, but still somewhat of a letdown knowing there isn't a post-game content, hopefully they fix this with some dlc. The OST in this game is quite breathtaking, the soundtracks for the islands do make you feel immersed, and lonely in the world you're in, the soundtracks for the boss fights are as hype as they've ever been, truly this soundtrack is a Sonic fans fever dream come true. Overall, for Sonics first outing in this type of genre, sets up a very good foundation for what can come next, and i think SEGA did a great job. Not the best open world game, but again for Sonics first interaction in this type of gameplay style, it did great on all fronts. Expand

The Game itself is a fantastic experience, The gameplay is fun, The story is fascinating and it expands upon the existing lore for long-time fans and it also hooks in new fans as well, The only problems I encountered in this game are as follows:

one problem is the pop-ins, I don't think it's as bad as ruining the game but it's definitely noticeable, another thing is some bugs here and there that I'm pretty sure will be fixed and if not, they're not that common or game breaking except some that are kinda exploitable. Another thing that in my opinion could improve the game is a bit more balance in the game, fishing, for example, I think it's really good to have the option to buy vault keys and portal gears and etc directly from the fishing shop menu so that some players that are struggling with obtaining them in the normal way get to have them, But towards the end game it really gets OP, for example, I was defense level 40 and power level 45 and speed level 32 before entering the last island, and after one round of fishing in the last island, I was max level on all my stats! (max level is 99 for the 4 RPG stats)
The balancing issue affects boss fights as well, some bosses I was able to halve their HP bar in 5 attacks! (I was playing on hard difficulty and high speed style gameplay for context)

Now back to the good parts of the game, The soundtrack! Oh, the soundtrack! a single word, Awesome! everything about the soundtrack is just pure perfection! I enjoyed every single one of them, And I'm sure most sonic fans and new players are gonna also enjoy them.
This game is a huge step in the right direction for Sonic Team and SEGA and I hope that Sonic Team can expand their team and SEGA gives them more budget to make even better games!
I'm really excited about the future of this series and I really recommend you give this game a try!

Sonic Frontiers isn’t perfect, but is still a fantastic step and jump dash in a new direction. The open zone has some blatant pop-in, but it’s only on certain objects, generally ones in the sky. The gameplay loop is very solid, the controls are very smooth on the ground, but still need a bit of work in the air. Sonic is very inconsistent on when you try to fling him off a ledge. He may fly into the horizon, or stick to the ground like a magnet. Cyberspace flows well in the gameplay loop, but the reused assets and level design from previous games with unchangeable poor control makes these levels the weakest part of the game. The OST goes hard, piano in the overworld, EDM in Cyberspace, which is really good(and I don’t usually care for EDM), and insane vocal tracks in boss battles. While the ending could’ve used a bit more time, the story is one of the best in the series, and all of the voice actors bring Ian Flynn’s masterful writing to life, and make these characters feel like themselves for the first time in over a decade. The interactions are great and you can tell they really cared both about new fans and old. Not perfect, but still amazing. 8.5/10 Expand

    --Positives--
-Ambitious open zone with lush environments and beautiful music to accompany it
-Great physics, allows you to pull off speedy strats, especially with rails.
-Serious story, with good mystery elements
-Cyber Space levels, the linear levels in the game, are extremely fun to find speedrun strats with.
-Amazing vocal themes. Won't spoil anything specific that hasn't been revealed, however:
-I'm Here, the main theme, is absolutely amazing. Vandalize, one of 3 possible ending themes, is also really great.
-Boss themes are genuinely perfect, please go through this game unspoiled to get the full experience.
-Combat is really fun to combo with, especially on enemies like the Ninja class of robots, who are really fun to dodge and parry.
-Boss fights are some of the most fun I've had with a video game in years. Please, save your game in the extra slots before them, to ensure that you can go back and replay these gems.

    --Negatives--
    - Cyber Space often reuses level aesthetics & designs. Up to you to decide if you prefer originality or fun.
    - After island 3, the game becomes slightly less visibly polished. Islands 4 & 5, (no spoilers) just seem like they were after thoughts. They're fun to play, but they feel less polished.
    - Story mystery is great, but the reveals are under cooked.
    - The different endings are locked behind difficulty, so it's kind of hard for players of certain skill levels to achieve certain endings.

    Verdict
This game is great. It's really one of the best games this year so far. However, some poor decisions such as limiting the team to 60 people, have made the game fall short of a 9/10.
    Final Score: 8.6/10.
The displayed score will be a 9, since I will round up. But I give it an 8.6.

I finished Sonic Forces in about 4 hours. But I can't say the same for this game. I'm about 13 hours in and just started Chaos Island, so far I have to say this is the most engaging Sonic experience since Sonic Adventure 2.

Ian Flynn is a fantastic writer and really captures the spirit of Sonic and his friends. If you're a fan of the Adventures games or the IDW Sonic comics, I would absolutely at the very least watch the cutscenes. This is the best written Sonic story we've gotten in about 20 years.

The music is a lovely mix of electronic for Cyberspace and Rock or Orchestral for the open zone and battles.

As for the gameplay there is a lot here that does and does not work and I am happy to provide an organized list of the good and the bad:

    THE GOOD:

-Open zone puzzles and challenges are easy but very fun and rewarding. IF anything they're designed to test your aptitude towards understanding the control scheme, which is very clever considering this controls like no other Sonic game.

-The combat is some of the best combat I've ever seen. The combos and new abilities really give Sonic a whole lot more freedom in battle. The guardian battles are fun and engaging and the incidental enemies provide a decent enough challenge that make you want to fight them.

-Exploration and platforming in open zone invokes one of the most liberating experiences I've felt in a Sonic game ever. THIS is where I feel Sonic games need to go in the next 10 years. Freely traversing the world, fighting bad guys, picking up chaos emeralds, and finding secret areas.

-The titan boss battles are truly epic. Some of the best fights I've played in ages. These are fast paced, action-packed brawls that you just HAVE to experience for yourself. Imagine the final boss battles in previous 3D Sonic games but you have one for EVERY island.

-You can configure Sonic to your liking in open zone areas. This is seriously the BEST feature in my opinion and gives this game the most versatile settings I've ever seen in a Sonic game.

    The bad:

-The Koco quests are incredibly clunky. I understand their need to be incorporated into gameplay to serve the story and the challenges are fairly simple. But these quests can be incredibly tedious as the Koco just barely respond to your movements. Thankfully this is only a small portion of the game.

-Some of the non-Koco quests feel a tad unfinished as some of the hints give you little to no direction as to where to go. This isn't a major problem as it's pretty easy to figure out, but it would help if this was improved considering this game is meant to be played by newcomers and returning fans.

-The cyberspace stages are unavoidable but thankfully are over fairly quickly. Sonic Frontiers realizes Morio Kishimoto's vision for Sonic Forces, the player can complete the stages as fast or as slow as they choose. The biggest differences here are that you can unlock chaos emeralds faster and skip some of them by playing all the challenges (red rings, x number of rings, time trial, etc); the 2.5D stages are no longer the norm in favor of either 2D Rush style stages or a full 3D stage. Most surprisingly the boost has been stripped back. No longer are just able to just boost through enemies, rather boost serves as a tool to increase your speed. This can be incredibly frustrating if you're used to the proverbial boost-to-win tropes of previous Sonic games. Your adjustable physics in the open zone unfortunately do not impact cyberspace which is sad as the physics in the cyberspace feel fairly slippery in comparison to the open zone. While critics claim to love linear boost gameplay, I feel as if this style has overstayed its welcome and would like to see it phased out in future games in favor of the open format.
-Memory tokens. This gives me trauma flashbacks to Sonic Unleashed's Sun and Moon medals, THANKFULLY, these aren't hard to get and you may find yourself enjoying the search for them.

As a longtime fan, this game has to be one of the most engaging experiences I've had with the blue blur since Sonic Adventure 2. That really says a lot considering I've been very critical of his previous outings.

    7.8/10

It has problems, yes. But it's a blast nonetheless.

Protip: Max out your rings, then find a grind rail. Jump while holding the boost button. Go zoom. You can also do a boost into ramps or certain slopes and go flying.

As a Sonic fan, I loved the hell out of this title. By far my favorite Sonic game

This is THE Sonic game to play. It’s story is large and dips into Sonic lore a bit (Something we haven’t seen since Unleashed). It’s an open-zone playground with fun platforming and tricks to go on. The combat system is great and works really well with the enemies you fight in the game. The Boss fights are also a treat when you get to them, they’re probably the best the series has seen. This is THE Sonic game to play. The OST is great as well. Getting Kellin Quinn to make a few tracks was a very good option with the direction of this game. Overall it’s a very solid Sonic title and I definitely recommend giving this one a shot! Expand

While far from perfect, this is still a spectacular sonic Adventure that's very fun to play through From beginning to end.

I love how this game improves the Sonic formula. The story is much better compared to Forces and I absolutely adore the new characters. I am so happy that SEGA finally made a good Sonic game after Generations.

Sonic's entry into new, for him, gaming paths is overall successful, despite any problems. With a little polish and attention to detail, the next game in the series has the foundations in place to finally look eternal rival Mario in his three-dimensional, bubbly eyes.

As a 3D Sonic a step in the right direction. The open world has a lot to offer but gets lost in redundancy.
