This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going into Frontiers as a long time sonic fan i was worried that we'd be in for another stinker. But it's precisely BECAUSE I've been with the franchise for so long that i loved this game to bits. It felt like it was made for me. The over the top anime boss fights, the more serious tone, the dialogue all contributed to a fantastic experience. It wasn't perfect though. There was some really bad pop in and Sonic's ground momentum felt weird which is a shame because otherwise he controls perfectly. The ending also felt rushed. As if they were like "oh **** We need something BIGGER to fight than the titans! **** it, throw the moon at them lmao." In that sense Frontiers could be a studio Trigger anime. Either way it was a great time and i cant wait for the next one. Sonic is back. Expand

The controls are excellent, the design of the islands are immaculate with loads of fun challenges to do, the story is outstanding with top-tier writing from Ian Flynn of the IDW comics, the game-play is fantastic with lots of variety coupled with an awesome new combat system and some of the most PHENOMENAL boss fights in all of gaming, and the music throughout is GOD TIER with a beautiful mix of orchestral piano themes and some of the HEAVIEST Metal tracks of the whole series!!

It legitimately upsets me to see some outlets low-balling it and giving it a much lower score than it deserves! Don't listen to outlets like 7GN & Digital Trends, this game is absolutely worth the $60-70!

Sure it has pop-in issues and sure the Cyberspace stages are reused themes and assets, but honestly all the incredible aspects far outweigh the negatives!

Easily a Top 3 Sonic game alongside Mania and Adventure 2! Cannot recommend it highly enough!!

“Uh, Sonic should’ve died in 2D”

    What about Mario then?

    “Same thing for Mario”

No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

“Image being a kid, he would be bored playing this game”

Are you that kid? Stop self projecting. Why we have to treat Kids like they are stupid? Super Paper Mario was 14 years ago. Do I really have to explain what I’m saying? That game aged like fine wine. Bowser’s Inside Story is another one. And this will do the same because it’s good. It’s so good. Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

    - Bosses are a step up from past games and have some cool moments
    - While I don't like the weird pacing of the story, I do think this game does a great job at characterizing Sonic and his friends compared to past games, setting up possibilities for future games
    - Combat is interesting and can be pretty addicting, but I do think there should have been more variety in the abilities though(most of them do the same thing just with a different animation)
    - Serves as a great foundation for future games to improve on
    - Amazing OST

    Cons:
    - Very unpolished and janky
    - Most of the platforming and obstacles you traverse in the world are just placed haphazardly around the world using default assets(but I do like how you can unlock rails to connect them together)
    - The third island of the game has majority 2D sections and is *extremely* poorly designed (and the fourth and fifth islands are just extended versions of the first?)
    - Uninspired minigames, island designs, and puzzles
    - Very noticeable pop in that can actually hinder the gameplay at some points

Overall, for a Sonic game, I'd say it's one of the best. It was fun to play through for the most part, and the length of it was sufficient as well. However, the game has many areas for improvement that i'd like to see in the next game; the formula is great and I think they can pull off a real banger if they fix most of these issues.

Some Cyberspace stages were cool too and I really liked some of the character interactions later on. The fishing mini game with big was a nice distraction and gives you really good items and I love the soundtrack, but thats standard with sonic games.

    Here is everything else

Cyberspace sucks, flat out. Level design is eh, but the physics are really bad, you move super slow even when boosting and any semblance of momentum you might think you have is stripped away when you jump, it is slow and jarring. Some stages (1-2 specifically) are just difficult and I feel like the actual mechanics make them way worse than what they should be.

Enemy encounters are trivialized by the parry. The parry (activated by holding L1 + R1) requires no timing whatsoever, it acts like an active counter, you cannot move while using it, but almost every attack you can get hit by can be parried, so it ends up being ( run up to an enemy > hold L1 + R1 > attack) and its just repetitive, if you had to time the parry (something similar to Bayonetta's witch time) it'd be more engaging to me. More combo routes and special moves would've made it a lot more interesting, but for a lot of it it's either cyloop or mashing the square button after hitting a parry.

The open world (referred to as open zone by takashi iizuka) is a bit empty for me, but isn't bad. The environments are pretty and the lighting is really good. Props to The Hedgehog engine. It dosent get the credit it deserves, unfortunately good lighting can't save the awful pop-in. It dosent bother me much personally, but that may be my own personal bias towards the game. I noticed it sometimes but it never really hindered my experience with the game. To others It will, ESPECIALLY on switch.

The story isn't anything special. Without going into spoilers, there's a lot of cool moments and references, but nothing groundbreaking, but its decent setup for a continuation or more stories down the line. It feels pretty safe overall. For me, the highlight of the game are the boss battles, I will refrain from saying anything, if you can, GO INTO THEM BLIND, trust me it's well worth it. Unfortunately you cannot rematch them once defeated, so try to enjoy them while you can or make a save before the boss so you can fight it again if you want. Obligatory sonic music good comment here That leaves preformance.

On pc the game runs great, 60 fps (higher framerate options later on maybe?) And looks really good to boot. It's no elden ring, but what is there can be appreciated by anyone. If you can, play it on pc, xbox series x or ps5. Series S should be okay, but there is no 60fps mode yet on there. Ps4 and Xbox one is fine but it runs at 30 and it's kinda bad for a game where you run really fast, id play these if you didn't have anything else, which leaves the switch version.

Don't play it. If you have literally any other console there is no reason to play it on switch, it is genuinely really **** ugly and also runs at 30 (when it feels like it) it really isn't up to par and I blame both sega and Nintendo, but that's another discussion for another day. The game is a lot of things, some good, some bad. But to me it is a nessicary step forward to get another good 3D Sonic. I had a lot of fun in the 30 or so hours I put in, I played on hard mode and got a lot out of it. if you can, get it on sale. I wouldn't pay 60 bucks for it as it is now.

Sonic Frontiers is a decent game bogged down by a lot of mechanical and design issues that could've been prevented with more time in the oven. I give it a 7 out of 10.

The pop in is rough, theres some jank in a lot of places especially in terms of animation, but I'd still rate it a 9/10 despite all these flaws.

Took me roughly 20 hours to 100% the game, and I felt like that is the perfect length for this style of game.

Combat was good, but could definitely be expanded upon in future entries. The red seeds of power make Sonic do way too much damage if you level up strength, so its hard to enjoy how good the combat is when enemies die too fast.

Movement overall feels really good, and I like the accessibility options for it a lot. I would like the physics of the game to be closer to Adventures 1 & 2 , and I'd like the drop dash to control closer to the 3d spindash from those games, but in terms of just moving Sonic in the open zone he feels great.

I hope future games also bring back the unleashed art style. Fix the art style , fix the jank, and keep this same tone, and direction for the story, and the next game could be an easy 10/10.

If "bland Unreal Engine tech demo" is the style Sonic is aiming for in the future, I don't think I'm interested in this series anymore. Remember Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure 1? City Escape from SA2? Crisis City from Sonic '06? Say what you will about that last one, at least there are interesting visual elements going on in that stage. One of the best parts of any Sonic game is seeing the unique and stylized zones and areas Sonic Team crafts. Technically obsolete, repetitive and boring, visually dull and bland, empty areas, pitiful mini-games which have nothing to so with Sonic (puzzles, hopscotch, ...) and those 2D sections everyone hates.

You want more ? Clipping everywhere, lags every two meters, zero stakes, shameless reuses of assets and level designs of stages from previous games, ... And an utterly lamentable final Boss.

The worst part being it took not less than five years for SEGA to lay this steaming turd. If people are happy to have received this pathetic sub Sonic then their expectactions were miserably low.

Another absolutely underdeveloped mess from Sonic Team. Seriously, why do they keep pumping out broken garbage and the fanbase keeps lapping it up without any criticism? If this is all you want, this is all you're ever going to get, but good grief this game is broken, boring, janky nonsense.

as a long time sonic fan i really enjoyed this game as a good path to the future or sonic
its not perfect the pop in is atrocious at times. and the physics of the world can be kinda weird when sonic is launched from bumping on a rock when going at max speed.

PS1 era camera, no sense of depth when jumping. I played 30 minutes before I couldn't take the camera anymore and got a refund. Graphically it's mediocre at best. A whopping two settings, High and Low. Caps at 60fps and doesn't run solid 60 on my 6800m, Cyberpunk runs at 60FPS FFS. This is such a poorly optimized game. Even putting frame rates aside, setting

The game itself isn't fun either. Devoid of anything to really do. It's a faux open world.. Not worth the full price or sale price I paid.

Honestly, people mention the pop-ins a lot but forget to mention how this game is super well optimised,
A lot of games that are coming out these days are super unpolished in the framerate department and now with pokemon scarlet and violet, it seems that not even nintendo is off the hook.
I played the game with no issues and loved it! been a sonic fan since 2004 when i was 4 years old

    - Poor performance. Constant stuttering. Unstable framerate.
    - Not Sonic. This isn't a Sonic game, this is a fan tech demo.
    - Unfitting graphics. gross realistic graphics instead of cartoon graphics.
    - Bad music. This is the first mainline Sonic game to have trash music.

The open world is fun to run around in, but doing any of the tasks within are boring. The combat has a lot of "needless depth" to it, where you CAN do all these bigger moves and combos, but your basic abilities more than suffice. The enemies are generic and bland as well, variations of "small shiny black robot with pointy arms" to "giant shiny black robot with stompy legs".

The zones themselves are boring and are all based on the awful Boost gameplay that people think is good for some reason. It is however, still leagues better than 06, Forces, Unleashed, Heroes, etc.
The story is another "I'll go save all my useless friends" throwaway, as Sonic games almost always are nowadays.

The music is okay, but the cool-factor is outweighed by the fact that Sonic himself is not as cool as the music/lyrics try to make him out to be. Better to just download the music and listen while playing a better game.

A large story-based content update was announced so there's a chance it will improve the gameplay some more, but there's a whole bunch of cosmetic/misc/junk stuff before that comes out that will likely interest very few players.

To top it all off, it has Denuvo. This causes the game to microstutter at times. Even if it didn't though, I still don't think this game would be worth pirating at this stage. A decent improvement after the last 17 years of disappointment, but mediocre at best.

I also don't like how meloncholy the music is in some of the open-world zones. It has a vibe almost like the Witcher 3, which is weird for a Sonic game.

Otherwise, a very fun open-world game. The music for the boss battles is AWESOME.

    Pros:
-An open world experience full to the brim with different activities and nice mini bosses with different combat mechanics.
-I really had a blast just speeding through the islands, taking in the environments and just enjoying the beautiful backgrounds.
-But what really stands out for me is the combat, sonic really needed this for the longest time and they nailed his combat to my shock a very well controlled and easy to pick up combat design that's not complicated at all. I really hope sonic team improves on this system.
-Another stand out spotlight moment is the music, goodness, whatever SEGA makes Sonic music they really know how to nail it. I really enjoyed the music, calming, but also the rock music is just......AMAZING!!
-One more spot light, the super sonic bosses........EASILY the best that super sonic has ever been. Pure Coolness, awesomeness, and very well crafted fight cut scenes. I just loved it, and the rock music going along with it, just pure amazing.
-Story is good, not amazingly great, but a lot better and put together then forces.
Now the cons, not that many, but must be said.
    Cons:
-Camera is not as bad as previous 3D sonic games, but if caught in a wrong angle, it can sometimes mess you up. But still needs improvement, but its better then previous.

-Not alot of moves, by the time i got halfway through the game, I had all the moves, and the moves are cool, but there aren't a lot of them.

    - Final boss should have been a lot more cooler, but i won't spoil it.
    - Islands are good, but the last two use the same assets as the first island.
-Cyber space, now where do i go from here? Ok, they are not bad, they are not long and annoying either, simple and short. But Sonic team really needs to let go of reusing past stages as filler for their games. They need to get back to using and creating actual special stages like in the old sonic games, While its good to remember past glory, its over staying its welcome. Now is the time to move on from that.

    Overall:
Sonic frontiers is the positive step that sonic needed in his 3D career, now from this Sonic team needs to build on this system they have created and improve on it.
I really liked it, and I would recommend this as a sonic fan to others.
I will give this a solid 8 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely adored it from start to almost finish, not a masterpiece for sure but extremely enjoyable, especially the first two islands and especially in my case, the second one Ares.

While the third one Chaos was aesthetically and visually pleasing for its volcanic setting, the 2D sections ruined a lot of the fun I had playing the first two, it still was pretty enjoyable albeit slightly annoying, I genuinely wish Sega would just drop the 2D sections all together because they offer no form of enjoyment whatsoever in sonic.

As for the final "Island" which we all know it's basically the latter part of Kronos, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, certainly more enjoyable than Chaos' multiple 2D segues. However the one main critique I have is that Sonic team DEFINITELY needs more employees because I heard they were only 60 at most, hence why the game was cut this much because of Sega's stupid "not wanting to wait" decisions, I'm still thankful Izuka fought Sega to give him another year because good lord it would've been a disaster if he couldn't convince them.

Now, the story wasn't Unleashed or black knight level of quality, or hell even the first two adventure games quality, but it's way way WAY better than what we got in the Pontaff era, and to that I say, thank you Flinn, for once in a whole decade of mediocre writing, I actually saw every cutscenes without cringing about the awful dialogues.
It was super relaxing seeing them just interact naturally in this weird environment, especially the Sonic and knuckles dynamic, you can tell they genuinely care for each other even if they bicker a lot.

The exploration is extremely satisfying and I found myself immersed so much that I just didn't want to let go of the Island and go to the other one, it was a blast.
The cyberspace levels though..not so much, now some are really good but then you realize it's literally the same level design as previous Sonic games and it's just sad thinking that the best parts about the levels were old levels that were already enjoyable on their own with their own aesthetic instead of green hill again for the love of god, but overall it was alright, and either way it's just bonus content anyways so I'll give it a pass.

The bosses were the highlight of the game, we need and I mean NEED this type of boss formula in future sonic games, because between the music that literally made me almost tear up of joy and the amazing spectacle that Super Sonic vs the Titans was, it honestly more than delivered, it's insane to think that these weren't final boss type of bosses because they're too good..

Which makes me question the decision as to what the heck was even the final boss? It was so out of the blue and really weird, and that's only when you play the hard mode, if you're on easy or normal you'll just get a QTE for like 10 seconds and the boss is gone, it was extremely confusing and I guess really displeasing given the normal bosses were the best part of the game.

Overall though, I spent 22 hours total because I wanted to 100% and it is quite satisfying seeing all the maps fully unlocked so I enjoyed 100%ing it. And I gave it a 9 because, many people would say it's a 7 but in terms of enjoyment in my personal opinion, it's above that. Not a 10 but not a 7 either, so a 9 would fit perfectly in what I experienced in the game (I'm talking about it as a sonic game, I'd give it an 8 if we're talking about it being a standalone game)

And I'm hopeful that future games will be great if not even superior of what frontiers showed us, and please sonic team, no more green hill, chemical plant or sky sanctuary, nor 2D sections, just be an original fully 3D fame and I guarantee you, many people will enjoy it.

Sonic Frontiers is not the best game ever, and that's for sure. But SEGA demonstrated that they can actually bring Sonic to this type of formula (Open World/Zone). That's why Sonic is truely BACK!

This game is far from perfect, but its a step in the right direction. One of the best Sonic games i've ever played, keep up the good work Sonic Team, and good luck with all that is coming next!

Sonic's entry into new, for him, gaming paths is overall successful, despite any problems. With a little polish and attention to detail, the next game in the series has the foundations in place to finally look eternal rival Mario in his three-dimensional, bubbly eyes.

As a 3D Sonic a step in the right direction. The open world has a lot to offer but gets lost in redundancy.
