Every boss requires you to adapt a new strategy. Then, there comes the two final bosses, One requires you to master everything you have learned so far, Isshin the Glock Saint and Demon of Cheese and the other requires you to abandon everything you have learned so far.

FromSoftware have grown into one of those studios whose game releases are big events. And I'm really glad as they are one of the few companies out there devoted to strong singleplayer games and the Soulsbourne games are one of the reasons I got into gaming.

That being said, Sekiro is a masterpiece. Its a natural evolution on the soulsbourne games and is different in all the right ways.

Sekiro: Shadows die twice is a FromSoftware game, not a Dark Souls game. Despite Sekiro takes some mechanics and style from the Souls series, the game accomplish the turnover that the developers wanted, and for me, in a right direction.
For the next analysis I'll compare him with other similar games, but I want you to know that it's quite independent from what you have seen.

    Pros:
    - FromSoftwere are experts on the game design: The feudal japanese ambient; main character; map design and bosses are awesome.
    - High Level of difficulty + good gameplay: Souls saga developed the character mobility through the games, being Dark Souls 3 and specially Bloodborne the quickest games of them; Sekiro developed even more that mobility making the game vertical and adding the stealth. Despite I am a Souls veteran, I think the game has a great difficulty and makes so satisfying to kill a boss.
    - Even though the lore of the Souls series was really deep, in Sekiro we find that the information received is more explicit but no less deep.

    Cons:
    - As I said before, the gameplay is good; but the animations for killing basic enemies are so limited for a 2019 game.
    - I would prefer a deepest character customization: Or weapon variety (with their respective movement sets) or more skills that transform the gameplay to another level.

In conclusion, Sekiro is a really good new IP with a very high potential of being another historical sagas just like Souls games.

That's how this entire game feels - and I am in heaven.

In case it's not clear enough, Sekiro isn't just "hard" - it is excruciating. No multiplayer means you have no crutches for ultra-hard bosses; nobody coming to save you. Much like the game's setting in sengoku-era Japan, Cheese just doesn't exist and it will be impossible for you to cheese your way through any boss fight.

Alas,After making three, count them THREE, sequels to a game that should have stayed as one game FromSoftware finally broke free from the shackles and made an original game. After playing Dark Souls 2 and 3 I was completely fed up with FromSoftware's artificial difficulty and the mentality that difficulty is always good (spoiler alert: it's not) and I thought I would never play this game. Alas, the feudal Japan setting did drag me in at last, and I am so happy it did.

At the start of the game you wake up in a cave as an actual written character, not the **** "make your own character" **** they did in the Dark Souls games which did nothing but decentralize your character from the story. I don't even know where to start on explaining how happy I am they actually wrote characters for this game. Anyways, back to topic. You're the "Divine Heir"'s shinobi and you have given your life to protect him. That's as much you need to know about the story. Sekiro follows the same formula from Dark Souls when it comes to storytelling, but in my opinion Sekiro does it way better.

I started playing Dark Souls 3 and I got no objective or backstory. All I get is this girl with an awful voice actor screaming aShEn OnE in your face. The rest of the story is in cutscenes and item description. Sekiro however has a storyline and motivations, but most if not all backstory and lore is hidden in item descriptions and optional conversations. Immediately it feels way better than just killing **** for no reason.

The combat in Sekiro is so well thought out and so dynamic and fluid. Instead of rolling and avoiding attacks you face them head on with blocking, which will take a hit to your posture meter, or do a perfect parry, which won't hurt your posture. If your posture meter is filled up you will lose your guard and be stunned for a second opening you for attacks. You can also choose which way you want to kill enemies and bosses. Posture kills or vitality kills. Feels way more intuitive and fluid than "roll, slash, roll, slash"

There is no leveling in Sekiro, but after you kill a boss you get a memory you can use to increase your attack power. If you kill a miniboss you receive a prayer bead. Collect 4 to increase max health. When you kill enemies you receive exp and work yourself up to your next skill point which you can use to unlock new skills like midair blocking and parrying and my favorite, mikiri counter. I won't say much about it, you'll just have to figure it out when you play for yourself.

If you want a game like Dark Souls or "a classic FromSoft game" then stay far away. No dodge rolls. No empty dystopian worlds. No uninteresting enemies or bosses. Although sometimes they may reuse bosses they always feel new and original. In conclusion, Sekiro is a beautiful game which hopefully will open up FromSoftware to make new original games just like this one.

The combat is different and more challenging (at least from the viewpoint of someone who is right now trying to unlearn what they learned playing Dark Soul), your own mobility is vastly increased and the levels are much more vertical.

When starting the game, from the splashscreen onward, you will know you're playing a FROM game, and that's amazing. They managed to keep their specific touch without regurgitating what they did for the least years once again. The story isn't quite as vague in favor of more cutscenes and dialogues (and a talking protagonist), but there are still lots of things to fill in yourself, including but not limited to lore bits and pieces on items and ominous NPC dialogue.

If you enjoy challenging games, action adventures, role playing games or even just gaming in general, you owe it to yourself to play this game. It's honestly amazing and I'm feeling bad just writing this because this time could be spend playing it.

But boy, am I glad I chickened out and started playing again. The combat is extremely satisfying once you get the hang of it, although it is still brutally unforgiving. You will die a lot and that is part of the game. Some bosses are really ridiculously powerful, but you can learn how to fight them effectively without cheesing them. It is possible, there are even people doing no-hit runs.

    Some tips:
    * buy coin purses and gain enough experience for a new skill point before every (mini)boss fight
    * learn how to dodge and parry properly - the timing is crucial and it results in the combat being more satisfying
    * in some ways Sekiro is a rhythm game, so work on studying the bosses and learning their pattern

The most different thing is not choosing your stats, like strength and etc because everything is done automatically, so if you don't want to keep thinking about these build things it's great. The setting, and bosses, are extremely striking too.

Only complaint is the huge delay to get experience at the end of the game, if you want to get all skills you will probably find yourself farming experience in the same place for hours and hours.

The game at first seems much more difficult than it seems, however, when you understand how the game works (towards the end, or in an NG+) it ends up becoming a "walk in the park with grandma" once you understand all mechanics.

With a unique fresh combat system, that feels similar to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, yet, completely different so that you can't rely on your former muscle memory.

This time, combat evolves around parrying your enemies attack to break their posture. The game manages to make you feel truly satisfied when over coming a mini or true boss because you've mastered his move sets and timings.

The game feels too hard at times, especially towards the end, but that's only because no other game you've played before requires this kind of input. I needed 4 hours, including grinding for more attack power, until I finally beat the last boss for the first time. Now I kill him almost always on my first attempt. The game offers you subtle ways to make the game harder, in one way with an item that makes enemies hit harder, while also giving more reward, and another way is an item which, when giving away, makes your blocks (or not perfect parries), deal a little damage to you (this one is only unlocked after beating the game once and carries over even to a new save file, I guess so new players won't accidentally make the game harder than it already is).

The game could use a bit more polish with some mechanics, like the special abilities and your secondary weapons, for they don't feel all useful and you might only use 2-3 of the available options (there are plenty of skills and secondary weapons, you might stick to a certain set for your play style the whole game through).

Nothing negatively mentioned would be worth reducing the points for the whole game is such a great experience that nothing else could compare to it. So far, there's only one game only announced where you play a humanoid monkey, that has the looks as if it will play like Sekiro, so Sekiro holds a candle of being yet another unique master piece from the Dark Souls makers.

And the difficulty drives you deep into the this immersive experience, where you find yourself gritting your teeth, riveted to the screen and fighting with all your might to just stay in it a little longer. To deflect and to dodge and to land just one more hit! Time and again, Sekiro had me falling out of my chair, stunned with the realization of what I must do... Twice! The resurrection mechanic just further enriches the experience, forcing you to become the ultimate shinobi master and and not only beat a boss, but completely to annihilate it... or at the very least to just barely out-live it, surviving and succeeding by the tiniest of margins. What a game! As a Souls fan (both dark souls and various other souls-like games), this game is just a treasure. It excels in areas Dark Souls cannot. Being provided with only one main weapon means makes for a finely tuned PVE combat experience that is much more immersive than the other Souls games... and you don't have any choice about it! You are forced to master these new mechanics, and quickly find yourself grappling around, sprinting, dodging, deflecting, and then destroying enemies and bosses that will leave your breathless with their magnificence. I could say more, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I implore you to not watch any videos of anyone else playing this game. No streams, no youtube, no reading about it. Just play the game. Fortunately, Sekiro is not Dark Souls. Yes, the cameraman still attempts to perform an amateur colonoscopy whenever a large enemy backs you into a corner. And yes, even petty bandits (or frail old ladies) can combo you to death off of one mistake. However, the main difference between this game and the entirety of the Dark Souls canon is that combat is actually fun. Fluid movement, a stamina mechanic that rewards aggression, and excellent visual/sound design all make even standard enemies encounters enjoyable. The implementation of a rudimentary (yet serviceable) stealth system means that working your way back to bosses after you die never becomes unmanageably tedious. The bosses themselves are difficult but not unreasonably so (at least during the first playthrough), and while they can all be defeated "fairly", Sekiro provides enough tools to mercilessly cheese most of them if the player is willing to experiment. While I do have a variety of criticisms ranging from the quality of the story ("minimalist" would be putting it generously) to the limited enemy variety (you fight 4 versions of the same miniboss) to consumable scarcity (certain enemies become very annoying or even borderline impossible to defeat without items you cannot obtain easily until late in the game), none of these are serious enough to deny my enthusiastic recommendation.

Having beaten it, I'll warn you; DON'T GO INTO THIS EXPECTING AN RPG-ACTION GAMESekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a great game, but it has a few flaws that keep it from reaching a 9 or especially a 10 in my books. Coming into this I've beaten every Dark Souls game as well as Bloodborne. I just beat this as well a couple hours ago, and I wanted to wait for that before giving any opinion on it. Having beaten it, I'll warn you; DON'T GO INTO THIS EXPECTING AN RPG-ACTION GAME LIKE DARK SOULS. This is mostly an ACTION game. It does not have stat building like Dark Souls or new equipment (barring the prosthetic). I'll be keeping this as spoiler free as possible.

GAMEPLAY - Difficulty wise, Sekiro manages to keep up a good challenge, even for a seasoned Soulsborne player like me. Due to the stealth mechanics, however, it loses some difficulty in the areas between bosses, as you can pretty easily stealth kill an enemy and run. But when you reach those bosses or mini-bosses, the game ramps up pretty hard. Due to this, I'm sure many players will rage quit once or twice on walls. Is this frustration a good thing? Depends on the player.

The difficulty comes from the combat. It is way faster paced than Dark Souls, more akin to Bloodborne. This game also uses two lifebar-esque mechanisms, and has no stamina. Vitality, which is pretty straightforward. You lose that, you die. The other one is Posture. This is slightly more complicated. If your posture breaks from blocking too many attacks, you become vulnerable. If an opponent's posture breaks, you can kill them instantly with a deathblow regardless of their vitality. Bosses take more than one deathblow, however. This leads to a system where you can play aggressively, attacking to lower posture, or more defensively, deflecting attacks to lower posture. A mix of the two generally works best. One thing I really like about this new system is that it doesn't feel like other From games (at least to me). You can't really use any tricks you learned playing those games.

FROM also tackles the fact that in their other games, you could just out-level any difficult challenge to make it easier. Not so in Sekiro. You can use experience to gain skills, but it's up to the player to learn to use those skills effectively. The only way to increase your base stats is to defeat those difficult challenges. This pretty much guarantees that when you fight a boss most other players will have fought him at the same "level" with similar abilities. I don't really know what this does for replay value, can't really say at the moment.

Are the bosses all good and fair though? To this I give an unfortunate no. Most are fantastic and get your blood pumping, others are dull, tedious, and somewhat broken. The less good bosses tend to be the non-human bosses. In my opinion, this combat system works best versus human opponents. Dudes in armor, if you will.

That, hopefully, covers quite a bit of gameplay, so I'll move on to other stuff.

SOUND/MUSIC - Amazing. As expected from these guys. They always hit it out of the park.

GRAPHICS - Great, colorful, really adds to a beautiful and eerie world. Easily From's best looking game yet.

LEVEL DESIGN/WORLD - Overlaps a bit with gameplay, I know. Overall, it's pretty good. But unfortunately, a couple areas are reused multiple times and it makes the world feel a little small (which it honestly is). The levels are well designed, but the stealth sort've takes away from the enemy placement, I feel.

STORY - In my opinion, the story is actually really well done. The game has a lot more voice acting and the story is more explicitly told than other FromSoft games, but it still has some of that mysterious charm that only Miyazaki can deliver. I don't think the game will lack its share of lore videos. The game has multiple endings, but I won't go into this any further, for fear of spoilers.

CONCLUSION - In a sentence, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an incredible action game, but some of the boss fights and mechanics detract from the experience. I hope this review somehow helped somebody. Keep in mind that this is only one person's opinion, and other's experiences with the game will differ greatly. If you love hard games, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

The combat is great, requires skill and feels really good once you get into the flow of things. The controls are also very tight and responsive. The game is gorgeous and the environments are fairly open with multiple paths to take. Bosses are as hard as ever but are still fair if you take the time to learn the movesets and the deflect/dodge/jump timing. Also the grappling hook and prosthetics do a good job of spicing up the gameplay. Also, Sekiro offers a lot more resources like coins, exp, and upgrade materials. My only two complaints are that stealth can feel a little weird sometimes but this is fairly minor so I'm willing to let it go. The second one is that you don't get any variety in builds but then again, this isn't a souls game. Would definitely recommend! Expand

As a AAA video game in 2019, 10/10 masterpiece.

As the latest installment in From's Soulsian genre, a 7/10. 10/10 because it's a video game for gamers. As the latest installment in From's Soulsian genre, a 7/10.

10/10 because it's a video game for gamers. This instantly puts it above all the interactive movie nonsense out there.

7/10 because, while it changes the formula up in fun new ways, it repeals without replacing. And not in a way that focuses the experience to new heights -- it just feels like lower effort is all. I might have expected a Japanese developer to really show the love when they return to their ancestral roots (Japanese setting versus Western setting of previous titles), but this game feels a touch uninspired.

Graphics are substandard. Not bad, just not up to AAA par. However -- and this is a big however, it runs flawlessly and is bug free, so if we view the game on the curve against the rest of AAA, we must respect the fact that it's an immediately playable game without annoying performance issues. No lengthy loading screens -- nothing has been pushed beyond reasonable limits to detract from the most important part of a game...

Gameplay : overall more forgiving and beginner friendly than other From titels, but after a few hours settles into a nice pace that will have you pleasantly aggravated but not rage quitting. Mob fighting consist of swinging from trees Tarzan style and plenty of badass ninja assassinations, but the bulk of your time will be spent fighting bosses and mini bosses. As usual the level design is set up for you to conveniently grind against the bosses for however long it takes you, but in general they are not too hard. You won't have jolly cooperation this time around so it's good we aren't facing down Fatty and Skinny again. (at least I haven't encountered anything that hard at the time of writing.)

Everything else besides gameplay : customization which gives play-driven replayability has been repealed and replaced with story. Story is weak, lifeless, and delivered non-sequitur. Characters are there to chop each other up. That's all. I dunno why bother with story and characters if they aren't going to be relatable, likeable, or at least clearly understood. I see dialogue and watch cutscenes but none of it makes any sense. I don't have poor reading comprehension -- it's just really poorly written.

Sound is fine, but gets a bit repetitive. I wish the "juicy" sounds accompanying special kills could be turned off. And the camera jerking too. Just gets old the 1000th time.

No multiplayer. In-depth stats have been replaced with standard AAA skill trees. Honestly that's fine with me, except that I never use any of the skills, so it's a repeal of something that used to drive engagement with something that is easily ignored.

FINAL VERDICT : Buy it, support it, enjoy it. Because it's a game for gamers. Up with the games, down with the interactive movies. But I expect more from From. Don't be resting on your laurels.

This game is perfect! Is it hard? HELL yeah! But boy is it satisfying, when after many hours of learning a boss' mechanics and at first lightning-quick attack patterns you score that sweet sweet killing blow. There's not enough space for me to praise Fromsoft. So let's get straight to the point why 8, and not 10/10.

    2) Even though each location is gorgeous, and those that can't be described as gorgeous are definitely atmospheric, there's not many of them, making the game the shortest one yet, since Demon Souls was released.

There’s no leveling (in Soulsborne sense of the word), no covenants, no multiplayer, no variety in armor and weapons. It could be written off a stylistic choice, if the rest of the game didn’t feel very similar to the previous FromSoftware games. But it does, so Sekrio comes across as rather shallow. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is a milestone in the genre. It offers complex, stunning and precise sword fights and duels that its predecessors lacked, and from which its successors will have to keep up with. You no longer simply learn by repeatedly and unfairly dying, but you refine your talents as a player. You seek unique methods to overcome each boss, rather than just rolling at the right time before spamming a few hits.

Dozens of hours later, we're still not sure how we feel about it. It's a game of contradictions, open and flexible in its level design, yet resolutely strict in its combat... It is a brilliant game, that is certain. but it is often a difficult one to truly love. Naturally, we can't put it down. [Issue#332, p.104]
