I thought it was pretty fun. Not great, but a fun time. Builds up some intrigue in the characters and lore, leading into the potential sequels which is what Bioware have always excelled at in the past.

Combat is fluid and fun. Massive improvement over the trilogy.

Game just needs more focus in the right places and some kinks to get ironed out. It'll never live up to the originals, but it does feel somewhat rushed and sloppy and needs more time to be fixed. Here's to hoping Andromeda 2 learns from the mistakes this game made.

It took time for me to get into the swing of this game and ultimately classify it as a welcome and natural continuation of the Mass Effect series for a few reasons. The first reason: the character models are flat out ugly. They quite frankly feel unfinished. It feels like they used Dragon Age: Inquisition’s smooth and colorful models and tried to make them more realistic by adding extra texture and detail to the faces. Paired with the unnatural facial animations, and you are left with this strange midpoint between cartoony and realistic that is strange. When your character first jolts on screen, it is a bit shocking. You are then immediately greeted by more characters, and they look no better. I’ll have to look back, but I remember the models in even Mass Effects 3 looking better.

Adding to the rough start is the fact that it gets off to a very in my opinion rushed start. While I normally would praise a game for jumping right into the action and feel that more games should do it, Mass Effect is a series that values you taking your time. To boot, this game features a whole new story in a whole new galaxy with a whole new cast of characters. I would have preferred it if the game let you wake up, walk around a bit and learn who everyone was and heck, who YOU are. Instead, you wake up, you are engaged with dialogue, and suddenly, you are put to work. It’s one of the few times I was aching for MORE exposition. Between the rushed intro and the ugly characters, I wouldn’t blame most people from being turned off from the get go. It isn’t until you are off the opening location (an ark named Hyperion, one of several arks designed to aid the Andromeda Initiative) that you can breathe and experience what this game really offers the Mass Effect universe. And that “something” is great.

    Freedom.

I’ve often lamented the Mass Effect series for going in the wrong direction compared to where I thought it should go. I was disappointed that the games seemed to favor increased linearity over increased exploration, as I feel that a game that involves exploring space and building alliances lends itself to a more open world form of gameplay. Instead, Mass Effect 2 featured smaller explorable hubs, including the comparatively tiny Citadel. And then Mass Effect 3 increased the size of the Citadel while offering less compelling additional areas. Since then, open world games have become an increasingly sexy genre in the gaming world, and while this leads to a lot of games that are tiring because they are poorly done open worlds with nothing more than repetitive busy work to fill the map or worse, gigantic maps with nothing to do in them (No Man’s Sky), I always thought Mass Effect was a perfect candidate for a more open experience.

So when you arrive on your first mission you get a slice of the more open experience that will only become more open as the chains come off and you are left to your own devices.

Here is also when you will experience your first combat situations, and man. The combat is great. The combat seems to be a controversial subject to some people as the skill choices have become more streamlined and any limitations on weapon choice or play style based on class have been removed. The dirty word “casualization” will be thrown around plenty here, but more streamlined and enjoyable to play while still offering variety is not a bad thing. To boot skill selection is still up to the player and those choices will have a very material effect on how the game is played, making it no less of an RPG than previous iterations. Do you want to go all biotic to manipulate foes and hit them with devastating combinations? Do you want to go all tech? Do you want to go all pure combat? Do you want a combination? It’s up to you.

Further improving the combat is the movement, which was always an annoyance in the Mass Effect series. Before, Mass Effect was largely a pure cover shooter with an often-tricky camera and stoic movement. But now movement is a lot more flowing, making it much more fast-paced and fun. Cover now happens automatically when you move toward a wall with a weapon drawn and getting out of cover is as easy as just moving, making you feel much less stuck to walls. Dashing and the jetpack are great and make for a more quick and verticle experience.Maybe from the outside these changes seem radical, but when you play the game, the changes are nothing but a natural and welcome evolution to the Mass Effect formula.

After this tutorial mission the game begins to take shape. You now have an idea of who you are, what your mission is and your role in the game to come. You will soon be on your first proper planet complete with several side quests, ready to experience the truly great experience before you. If you try to get past the rocky start, you won’t regret it.

Also it runs really well on PC.

    8/10, very good

Despite the glamorous appearance, inside is hidden all the same Mass Effect, just with the following fashion and trends. The game has technical problems, but it's quite accurate Mass Effect, the game is not revolutionary but it's very good!

At its 8 (with a stretch of course), she deserved, but only with the stretch set as a fan of the series.

Mass Effect: Andromeda seems to be an ambitious project by a young and new branch of the Bioware (EA) studio. I recently got into the ten hour trial, and my impressions are largely positive, but with a very few negative impressions mixed inbetween.

Combat: Combat seems to be one of the strengths of this game. While I can see how some people take issues with the interface, which is unresponsive at times, the new fast-paced action combat is a welcome addition to the franchise. The new "active" biotic system feels much more alive and active than the old "wizard" system of tossing two powers out for maximum damage.

Characters: This is probably as "Mass Effect" as it gets. You will have some characters that you tremendously enjoy spending time with, and you will find characters that are...blunt. Subjectively, I very much enjoyed spending time with Vetra and Peebee, but I disliked Liam. It's very much like squads from the previous games: You will love some, you will hate some. There's nothing that sticks out sore, but nothing that sticks out perfect either. "Solid" is the descriptive term to go with.

Story: I will refrain from judging the story until I have completely finished it. The beginning was fun and entertaining, but I'm not about to judge a book by it's first cover.

Exploration: Exploration is similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you like the (semi) open world setting of that game, you will most likely also enjoy spending some hours in Andromeda. The game offers side-quests and collectibles, as well as vast terrains that you can explore with the new "Nomad" - a vehicle similar to the Mako in Mass Effect 1. Except, obviously, it doesn't play like a piece of rubber all the time.

One of the negative aspects is probably the facial animations. While not as bad as some people would suggest, you can see some missing textures and details throughout the game. This is something that has to be fixed by post-release patches to receive a higher score. I would not perceive this as too annoying, but Andromeda is a Bioware RPG. This makes it necessary to look at character's faces for prolongued periods of time. In a game that relies on conversations, having these weird animations can be distracting.

Considering all the small details and previous games, I can see this as an ambitious first attempt at bringing the franchise forward. However, this is clearly only a first attempt, seeing that the game suffers from very minor but patchable bugs and glitches. It really needs some post-release work, but it isn't beyond salvageable. I'd consider it an average game as it is right now, but might change my mind depending on what's to come in a few months.

Game control and combat is familiar, key bindings match the first three games with a few extra features. The jump pack and scanner are cool. One hour in and you definitely feel the strong influence of exploration being the center point of the game, maps are not linear. I found the design of the first world to be a bit to busy for my taste, less could have been more here. After three hours I was enjoying the game play and the story started to improve. The game is not an ME3 sequel, it is a complete resign and feels like it in just about every way. I found the character dialog improved and more realistic than the paragon/renegade choices. Graphics wise I'm playing dual 1080's at 5960x1080 (perfect out of the box) and could only run High setting with FXAA and no AO, vsync enabled, to maintain 60fps. Temporal AA looked great but pushed frame rate down to 50-55fps. Expand

I defend the fact that I've not finished the game by pointing out that neither have most of the 1-4 raters on here.

Now, on to the things that matter. Yes, the narrative is uneven. When it's good, it's good, when it's bad it's more mediocre than awful. Yes, the voice acting is spotty. For the most part, and for all of the main cast, it's good. For some of the side characters, it is less so. The combat is as good as it's ever been - it would be the best in the series had they not disallowed control of squadmates. The UI is abjectly terrible, and the galaxy map is overbuilt, and while pretty, makes traveling unnecessarily slow. The characters are likeable, though none quite reach the original trilogy for memorability. Overall, it's a solid but flawed experience. There's potential here, but even when the game fails to reach it, the sky is not falling like some of the folks here would suggest.

And to the reviewer who said the game is locked at 30FPS - I recommend you check your hardware, because I'm running it 60+ on ultra.

The game overall though is fantastic, for the first time in any RPG game I've played (and I have played many), I don't feel like a messenger boy, I feel like I am a leader that is actually trying to search for the golden world for us survivors to thrive on. My experience with this game has been pretty much what I would expect from Bioware and a AAA title. I typically never enter a game expecting a GOTY experience, so perhaps I do set the bar low in most cases. I will add that at no point while playing this game did I feel that this game deserved a score lower than a 6.0. People are certainly entitled to their opinions and I respect the fact that this game is going to be one of those that isn't for everyone, but the 0s, 1s, 2s and 3s? Pure bandwagoning from the gaming hipsters, probably a lot of trolling as well. I bet most of those reviewers didn't even buy the game. Case in point: the animations. Much ado about nothing. Some critic before release decides to harp on a couple of funny looking facial expressions and then the entire internet can't stop talking about it. Where was this level of criticism for Fallout 4? How about DA: I? Plenty of games get by with sub-par to downright crappy animations. Have games like the Witcher 3 spoiled us on such things? Whatever the case, the facial animations aren't that bad and the new patch has shown improvements in the worst of them (i.e. Addison, the tired face lady). If they had to pick between facial animations and the rest of the graphics I'm glad the chose the latter. This game is gorgeous on high settings on pc.

Now for the bugs. This game has them, hell most games do these days. When was the last time you bought a console game and didn't have to download a > 1 GB day-0 patch? Bugs happen. Blame the publisher and their aggressive dates over the dev studio. At any rate I have never encountered anything game breaking and the latest patch seemed to squash some of the immersion-breaking ones during the cutscenes on the Tempest, which were the only truly annoying bugs for me.

So now for the actual gameplay. The combat system is probably the most improved part of the game. It just feels very fluid and when you play on a higher difficulty it can present a fun challenge. My biggest gripes about it are that they didn't allow for much companion customization this time around. You can mess with their limited skill tree but that's about it. However they make up for it through main character customization. With profiles you can spec into any/all of the talents you want. Get tired of playing a soldier? It's ok, you can switch to a biotic. No need to start the game over from scratch.

Overall the story and characters are good, sometimes great, but they never truly reach that level where I felt fully invested. I feel like the open world part of the game is the chief culprit here. While driving around and exploring planets in the Nomad is fun, it creates a break in the story that found me many times wondering what exactly it was that I originally came to this planet to do in the first place. In short, ME: A suffers from the same problems that plague most open world games which begs the question on a game series that found its success in the narrative: was making it open world really necessary? This is the same problem I had with DA: I. Just because you can make something open world doesn't mean you should.

All in all I found my experience in Andromeda to be fun and fairly rewarding. The story, while it never really reaches that epic scale from the original trilogy, it certainly delivers some good moments and successfully lays the ground work for a new series in the Andromeda Galaxy. Worth a buy IMO.

The gameplay is amazing, the characters are lovable (or intentionally hate-able) from an early point and the world is so well designed to give you the perfect feeling of nostalgic familiarity while still making everything new. The theme of the game is so well portrayed by the plot as there is always a feeling of mystery and an entity that is much bigger than yourself which can't help but invoke a need to explore and learn.

The only flaw in the game would be the animations, they are not up to modern standards. This said, however, they simply do not detract from the immense enjoyment that this game offers. As of yet I have still not encountered any bugs on my PC version, and thus cannot comment about that.

In conclusion, I cannot understand the gap in experiences that people are having with this title. It is thoroughly invoking and enjoyable, and certainly does not warrant the immense hatred it is receiving. The hate seems like a clear example of media hysteria to jump on the popular 'meme' for the day just so that you feel there are people out there who agree with you.

Remember how in the first Mass Effect you could roam around planets in a vehicle, well that's back and is a major part of the game, each planet you explore seems massive and is full of quests and things to shoot at. The scanning of planets and anomalies is also there and that's where my biggest gripe with the game lies, you cannot skip the animation of going from one area to another when moving around Andromeda, not the worst thing in the world. The bottom line is, if you like scifi and if you enjoyed the original Mass Effect then you will like MEA, ignore the people hating on this game, they don't actually know what they like. Expand

I can't see the reason behind all the negative reviews, I enjoy the game, very much.
Yes, it is buggy and, yes, the facial animations are weird, to say at least, but besides that...I don't feel that the game is so bad as others make it be. I'm certain, that those who gave the bad reviews expected something, I don't know, better than the original trilogy ? If so, what the hell did you

I like the game, and yes, I had few buggy moments, like, enemies fell through the ground in Voeld and I had to restart the game, and, got I stuck between two crates on Eos, and that's it, so far...31 hours in. The story and characters, are good, their stories are interesting, haven't done all of them, I did at least three or four.
Overall, IT IS A GOOD GAME.

This game rides the coattails of quite possibly the most popular sci-fi game franchise of all time. In so doing, it starts us off from the very beginning of a story that has basically no connection to the story most of us love - just as Mass Effect did some 10 years ago'ish when the series first started. Not to say that is the only reason this game isn't as good, but that connection is a large component in its underachieving.

After playing about 70 hours of SP on insanity, I can say that the game is actually pretty damn fun. The combat is so much better than the other MEs. There are some unfortunate bugs, and that sucks, but there are some awesome fighting techniques. People seem to be b*tching about the animations, haven't seen anything out of the ordinary for ME. Loving the story as it has finally started to get going and my Ryder is a f*cking wrecking ball now.

+ Combat is awesome (takes a while to level up and truly take advantage of the combat system)
    + Graphics
+- Galaxy Map Upgrade (This can get a bit annoying after it loses its luster)
    + Story
    + Open world
    + Tons to do

    - There are bugs (Frostbite I'm looking at you)
    - Ancillary characters are odd looking (and you keep seeing them over, over and over again)
    - Scanning can get a bit tedious
    - Can't skip certain cutscenes meant to hide loading (SSD, enjoy the wait)
    - Characters say the same comments and often comment on things out of order. Blame this on poor programming/scripting. (This happens A LOT. Quite disappointing they couldn't catch these in QA)
    - There are some bugs that completely break Missions
    - BW should have sprung on a video tutorial series for all the new stuff. AVP, R&D and all the other stuff they added. The game has a ton of depth, but I got very little introduction into the mechanics and was thrown into it.

0 or 1 ratings, what the f___? I wish that Origin would suck it up and put a rating system like Steam so only people who own the game could rate it. Because Metacritic is shi*. Would help avoid these toxic, copy and paste posts on here. This is the exact reason Steam dropped Metacritic from their service. *He says as he posts on Metacritic. Blow me.

If you are looking for Mass Effect 2 and 3 for your starting point then this is not what you are going to get. What you are going to get is a new and compelling story line with the some of the same races you had before.

So the Bad stuff first: - The facial animations, they aren't top notch, I didn't find them to be off putting but some people will -Some of the voice acting isn't

    So the Bad stuff first:

    - The facial animations, they aren't top notch, I didn't find them to be off putting but some people will
-Some of the voice acting isn't great, not so much the one on one conversation, but with multiple characters in a dialogue it can be a bit disjointed
-Some of the side quests can feel a bit MMOish
-It has quite a slow start, this is something that I don't think has done it any favors with the early access options, play a few hours and see what you think. It's slow, so I think that will go against it in that format and I have seen a fair few reviews here of people deciding not to buy it from that and review it from those few hours. In terms of this game you need to play through that to get to the gold.
-The inventory system is a bit clunky

    The Good:

-The environments are beautiful, with a good range and if you want to explore you will be rewarded for that
-Combat is interesting and doesn't feel like a speed bump
-The story is good, and has its own feel, note the above that it does take a while to get into it. Once you are in it though you have the choices of where to go and what to focus on.
-More then black and white. Some people are going to see this as a downside, there are more options than paragon and renegade, leaving room to be more of a nuanced hero.
-The personal character interactions are great
-Most of the side quests are good
-A similar but different focus to saving the whole universe and it all feeling very urgent

Overall I like if not love this game.

Buy it, play past the first 5 hours and hopefully you will feel the same as well.

It's disheartening to say everyone who has maybe not even played it at all not giving it a chance. It's a truly great game, not quite like the OT but topping the OT would have been close to impossible.

The exploration is incredible fun, the combat is at its best it has ever been and the overall gameplay feels just right. It comes close to an open world game with actually interesting sidequests and not just repetitive "go there, do that".

Sadly there are some aspects that fell short. Do I even need to talk about the animations? This game had 5 years of development time and they can't get them right?
The characters don't grow to you as much as in the OT, some still shine though (Peebee and Drack are adorable).

There's less emphasizing on the story, it's not bad but Mass Effect is now more about gameplay than story. Not necessarily a bad thing but unusual. A good mix would have been great.

Still, the sheer amount of hate this game is getting is just undeserved as people are now holding off from buying it just because of the animations. If you actually play the game, it's huge. There's so much more that lets you forget about its flaws at most times.

The worlds are gorgeous and fun to explore because of the Nomad which has surprisingly amazing driving physics! (Never thought that would happen with Mako 2.0)

I would recommend this game to anyone. You can still refund it. Trust me, it's worth it.

It is very similar to Mass Effect 1 in both its positives and negatives (Which is actually my favorite of the series despite the bad combat, inventory handling, and the awful planet exploration - the story made up for all of it). Yes it does have fetch quests and lots of random meaningless side quests... but so did every other mass effect and Knights of the old republic. And you know what? If you like doing those kinds of things they are fun - but you don't have to do them. It also feels the most like playing a Star Trek game than anything I have played in recent years.

Overall I would actually recommend it if people just relaxed a bit and enjoyed.

In my opinion the newest installment to the Mass Effect series is what mass effect needed.

Andromeda copies the gameplay of Dragon Age Inquisition with more streamlines main missions and well your spaceship. I loved Inquisition and i love the exploration, discoveries and the overall gameworld of Andromeda. i always wanted to just explore the Mass Effect Universe, see some settlements, cities and just get immersed in that game world.
In my opinion Andromeda really delivers that.

    Positive:

In terms of graphics, sounds, animations and gameplay I am very happy and satisfied.
I don't really understand critics saying, the quests are too MMO. Yes it's not a unique gameplay, but it works and interestingly enough games with pretty much the same gameplay are upvoted.

Combat is really fun and with different combos you can customize your battle strategies.
Driving the Nomad is awesome and compared to the Mako they figured out driving mechanics.

    Negatives:

Character Editor is again really bad and the custom Ryders are the best looking.
I'd love to have more squadmates, more customization options for said squadmates and more interaction with them.

Well... Only cons i saw is Hair and eyes. Plot is good, just good, but battle system is much better than in trilogy (thanks to jet pack). Personally only one bug i experienced is i stuck under stairs in multiplayer mode(again thanks to jet pack).

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
