Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.

Hades is, to put it plainly, a masterpiece. It has a refreshingly unique trajectory, tells a compelling story with an alluring cast, and has such a good handle on moment-to-moment play that it is never anything less than genuinely excellent. It’s a game that grows the more you play it, as opposed to being something that suffers from a slow descent into tedium. And for that reason, it is a genuine forever game.

Hades is everything great about the roguelite genre all but perfected. Few games aim as high, and fewer still reach their goals. Hades does, exceeding even the loftiest expectations.

Hades is an absolute must-have if you like the genre, but even if you’re not a big fan of roguelikes, Superiant Games’ latest work deserves an opportunity.

Supergiant Games has done it again. They have managed to perfectly mix amazing storytelling and great action to create another compelling title. Even if you are not a fan of roguelikes you should definitely try Hades out - it’s a challenge, it has a great story, and it’s a hell of a ride.

Hades takes the hated cycle of retrying the same checkpoint over and over again, flips it on its head with rewarding progression, and makes the player genuinely look forward to starting over with new abilities and upgrades.

There’s around eight different forms of in-game currency alone, and enough upgrades and modifiers to give even Euclid a headache trying to track all the variables. However once you fall under Hades’ spell after a couple of runs the near limitless combinations of character builds becomes bewitching.

Familiarizing yourself with the symbols attached to the paths made available as you go, means you don't feel like your runs are being dictated by RNG alone, and that means you can slightly guide yourself to some amazing builds within the gameplay loop. Boons (power ups) come by way of the many Olympic deities you call family, and that personal touch will likely result in you playing favorites... which can come with it's own surprises.

Probably Supergiant's best, and most accessible, game to-date. (Though Pyre remains my favorite.)

My first review was negative so I'm writing this review to balance things out. Hades is a bonafide masterpiece of a game, with replay valueMy first review was negative so I'm writing this review to balance things out. Hades is a bonafide masterpiece of a game, with replay value that extends beyond merely beating the game. Every single weapon is fun to use and offers significant difference in the gameplay from each other. And if that weren't enough, each weapon has three variations, all of which feel like they can be used to wreak havoc. The combat itself shines and never feels boring - I only stopped playing on Switch because I felt needed to start playing other games, then I bought it on sale on PC and started it all over. Enemies are fun to repeatedly mow down and are just varied enough to never feel like you're fighting too much of the same thing. If not for the clamp-tight gameplay, you could take your pick from the art style, music score, or characterization of actual figures from ancient Greek mythology as the star of the show. All are amazing to look at and listen to, and contribute heavily to this game's legendary status.

If you enjoy exhilarating fast-paced combat, this is a must-buy. I was not an ancient Greece aficionado before I played this game, but I assume those people would also be pleased since the game covers nearly all of them, and in a manner that would make perfect sense. My feelings for most of these characters is complex, but nearly all of them boast great performances from their voice actors and smashing dialogue. Hades is the one character I mostly don't like, but that's exactly what the game wants. I'll let you pick your own favorites when you play *wink*

I don't know what I could feasibly criticize about this game. There are things I haven't even spoken of that greatly enrich the experience. Your experience will change every run-though, and frequent death is inevitable, but the game grows and evolves as you do. It's brilliant game design, and the only reason why I haven't delved further into rogue-lite games after this is because I'm afraid Hades is just so much better than the rest.

Absolute steal at $25, and even moreso when on sale. Buy it if you haven't yet

Hades is a goddamn masterpiece of a game. I HATE roguelikes, yet I love this game with all my heart. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at theseHades is a goddamn masterpiece of a game. I HATE roguelikes, yet I love this game with all my heart. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at these kinds of games, but I found Hades very approachable and enjoyable. I did eventually take advantage of the game's god mode to make thing's a little more manageable (all god mode does is reduce the damage you take) since I kept dying somewhat quickly. I had fun before I turned god mode on, but the game actually felt beatable when I turned it on. It still took me a total of 18 tries and 11 hours to beat the final boss for the first time even with this god mode on.
One of the things I love about this game is that while you start over when you die, progression items carry over, which gives a sense of progression that no other roguelike I've played gives. In a way, dying in Hades can sometimes feel useful and rewarding, since you can now spend or save all the items you've collected while playing.
The combat in this game is god damn amazing. The many different weapons all feel different and have their own play style. You'll very quickly get used to one of these weapons and will want to try and beat the game with it. For me though, I actually beat the game for the first time with a weapon I didn't like too much. That just goes to show though how good the game's combat is. Even with weapon's you aren't used tom, as long as you're good with them, you can succeed.
Since this is a rougelike, there are a lot of random aspects to the game. My favorite of these random elements are the "boons" (powerups) that you can get on different floors. These are gifted by multiple gods that help you along your journey. There are SOOO many different abilities and ability combinations that It would probably take over hundreds of plays to see them all. Like the weapons, you'll find specific powerups that you like more than others and you hope they'll be there every run. But, like with the weapon, I actually won against the final boss for the first time with a super weird set of powerups. Again, it goes to show how well this games combat is set up. These random abilities can all work together so well.
The story of the game is also a highlight. Without spoiling much, the playable character (I'll call him his nickname, Zag) is trying to escape the underworld to see the surface. It's a simple enough story at first, but every time you die, some of the story might unlock. You also get to talk to multiple gods in the house of hades, which is also where you can upgrade yourself and your weapons. These NPC's always have something interesting to say, and most of the time it's something related to your last run. Considering every line is voice acted, this is super impressive! There are so many different lines to hear, and the voice acting is just perfect.
I really like the music in this game. It's nothing I'd listen to outside of the game, but it gets your heart pounding in those intense moments.
The upgrades that you can unlock after dying feel worthwhile and useful. They all have different purposes, and depending on your play style, you'll end up focusing on certain upgrades more than others. The weapon upgrades also feel nice and upgrade the look of your weapon.
The artstyle. THE ARTSTYLE!!! THIS GAME IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

My score for this game is a 10/10. This doesn't mean it's perfect, just that its a masterpiece. I barley have any problems with this game, and the ones I do have can boil down to me just being bad at the game. BUY THIS GAME!!!! I will continue to play this game until I get burnt out of it.

It is as good as they say. Has high replay and encourages experimentation and new tactics. It will also probably get you reading up on Greek history.
