The best thing about GreedFall is that intangible thing called “flow”: it’s easy to get hooked up and just play it, even though the game doesn’t offer nuanced mechanics or meticulously detailed world. [Issue#241, p.52]

RPG fans who have the stamina and who are after a singleplayer role-playing game that does not rely on the old-school could still have fun with Greedfall and should give it a chance. And even if it is only to love the extraordinary world design.

GreedFall boasts a unique, semi-open world in which to immerse yourself, but is held back by the limitations of its game engine.

Greedfall is a tough game to judge. It's neither bad nor great. It comes staggeringly close to greatness in a number of areas, but it just lacks the polish or ambition to go further. If you're looking for a nostalgic trip back to the mid-2000s style of WRPGs, then you'll find a lot to like in Greedfall. It's worth a shot if you're a fan of that style of games. In a year that gave us titles like Disco Elysium, it's difficult to be particularly impressed by something that is merely standard.

Greedfall is wildly ambitious and that is both its greatest boon and misstep. Were Spiders able to rein in their expectations we might have a more complete and perfect game here but as it stands there is too much filler to make this a flawless recommendation. Maybe next time.

Greedfall is a huge step forward for Spiders, offering improvements on all levels when compared to their past games. It does fall victim of overreaching with a small budget, having an annoying amount of backtracking and of reused enemies and assets, but it is still an entertaining WRPG in a very interesting setting, full of intrigue and suspense.

Greedfall is the kind of game where you really need to be into the story to be able to look past its faults and still enjoy it. That can be an issue because while the plot is generally well written and does a good job of tying its side stories into the main thread, the overall subject matter is going to be uncomfortable for some. Its design and gameplay elements are competent but nothing amazing, nor does it really do anything that stands it apart from others in its genre. There's also a fair amount of technical issues to deal with throughout. If the story does grab you, however, it's easy to invest quite a bit of time in the game. If nothing else, Greedfall does tackle the kind of story that few games are willing to discuss.

The combat is solid, borrowing the best elements from some of the more popular games that came before it, such as The Witcher. The story is set on a fresh foundation, although it doesn’t do much to build upon it. The skill tree and list of talents allows for a wide variety of playstyles, even if the character customizer doesn’t offer the same freedom. GreedFall is a good RPG with enough content to keep players exploring and engaged.

GreedFall has some of the most compelling characters and storylines so far this year. Unfortunately, they're buried by dated technology and a serious lack of polish.

While it's true that GreedFall has some serious problems with variety and bizarrely re-used assets, the story is great and the combat and game systems are quite good. Anyone willing to look past its problems and dig into the narrative will likely have a good time with it.

GreedFall's combat, dialogue, and romance are overshadowed by better RPGs, but it's competent enough to recommend with caveats.

Spiders' latest game succeeds in lifting itself from the terrible mediocrity that enveloped The Techomancer, but it does so with an effort that, although commendable, is still not vigorous enough.

Greedfall has some good ideas and nice writing. The player is often stimulated in a good way. But it totally falls apart in the very last third of the game, highlighting the flaws we agreed not to see until then.

The Spiders studio didn´t take players‘ comments on the previous titles seriously, and they repeat the same mistakes. GreedFall offers an interesting world, full of amazing characters and ideas, but lacks in other aspects. [Issue#298]

It’s definitely better than Spiders’ previous RPGs, but annoying quirks, self-plagiarism and outright bad game design permeate GreedFall as well.

It's a shame that a good game is held back by incredibly boring design decisions. I think Greedfall is on the verge of greatness but falls short in too many areas to really go down as a must-play. It's absolutely an enjoyable romp, just one plagued by the thought of what could have been.

Stellar storytelling and an immersive world design makes Greedfall fun to play, but disappointing character customization, poor graphics, and bad animation prevent the title from truly shining.

I enjoyed my time with GreedFall, but it's already failed to leave a lasting impression on me. Its best moments shine bright and show how much potential Spiders has to develop in this style of RPG, but it isn't cohesive enough to work in concert. GreedFall is certainly worth checking out if you're aching for the old days of BioWare, but it’s a tough sell for most others.

Disappointing is the best word to describe GreedFall. The 17th-century-esque fantasy tale of imperialism-versus-nature told here is ripe with potential, but the world/character-building, and story-telling soon runs out of "fuel;" the role-playing element starts great, giving you the chance to choose amongst many a path, only to become way too simplistic and limiting; the combat is fun, but it gets monotonous before hitting the 10-hour mark; and, finally, doing quests quickly gets rid of its "do it your way" mind-set, for an endless marathon that has the player running back and forth between quest markers. Disappointing…

Because Greedfall is so cavalier about its colonialist themes, and because it plays it safe by sticking so closely to the template of open-world RPGs, it doesn't really feel revelatory in any way. Instead, it's content to be just another digital playground--just another world filled with magic, riches, secrets, and monsters for players to shoot and loot at will. I did have fun when I got lost in its familiar RPG loop, but its lack of nuance or innovation prevents it from being truly remarkable.

Two of its major aspects, character progression and narrative choice-making, will take some more time to get a full read on, but I will say I’ve run into some great scenarios so far that have made me feel like the choices I’m making in both of those areas will have real consequences. If that’s the case, Greedfall could be an RPG sleeper-hit.
  2. Sep 17, 2019
Not all video games need to be introspective and interrogative, but Greedfall wants to have it all without the work. That ambition leads to a confusing and ultimately disappointing experience.
  3. Oct 18, 2019
The game feels like an older, slightly more scatterbrained Obsidian or BioWare title that I’m just discovering now, warts and all. The individual missions are well-designed and offer meaty moral choices, even if the scaffolding holding them up is a little wobbly. I feel like I’m back in my teens, curled up with a controller and a classic RPG, and I’m willing to forgive quite a lot of messiness in order to continue enjoying that pleasant sense of time travel.
  4. So yes, GreedFall is better than The Technomancer. But being better than The Technomancer isn’t exactly the hardest thing in the world. And despite its clear attempts to be, GreedFall isn’t better than the BioWare classics either. This is a step in the right direction for Spiders, but they still have a lot of work to do.

The game looks good all around.
The world design is decent, but big minus for invisibile walls. Also the lip sync is atrocious, which is a no-go for a story driven RPG.
The equipment and factions all look very similar, which becomes very boring, very quickly.
The UI looks like a more adult version of Fisher-Price. Lots of unnecessary elements and handholding there.

    Sound: 8/10
Decent in any regard, voiceover, music, sfx... Just nothing really memorable.

    Story: 2/10
    Nope.
    Just no.
The setting sounds interesting, but the devs didn't do anything interesting with it. The story itself is pretty much counter-productive for what makes an RPG enjoyable. The factions hardly differ from each other. The player character has no personality whatsoever. All the characters in the game are extremely one-dimensional. The game doesn't even have an interesting goal and there are hardly any real choices for the player to make.
Also the whole story is stretched out way too long for what little content there actually is to it.
Also, again, the lipsynch is just so bad, it destroys any possible immersion in the game when looking at their mouths while watching one of the way too many cutscenes in the game.

    Gameplay: 4/10
Nothing new here, literally. Just a bunch of things copied from other games. There is a armor mechanic, which in essence is just another layer of hitpoints, so that doesn't count either. Even if it would, it's so minor it doesn't even matter.
In combat the player feels disconnected from the action due to the nonsensical camera handling.
The combat system itself is extremely simple. But it's overall workable. Just not fun enough for more than one playthrough.
Exploration? Not for you! Invisible walls everywhere, nothing to really discover, minimap and common buildings in cities being mazes are sure to ruin any possible joy out of exploring the world.
The companions are very annoying with their constant commentary during combat.
The Balancing is absolutely horrible. Lots of abilities that completely negate game mechanics and also lots of abilities that are utterly pointless.
The RPG mechanics couldn't be any more simplistic and vanilla than in this game.
Also UI is a huge mess and destroys any possible immersion in the game.

    Summary: 5/10

Greedfall is yet another soulless RPG made by ticking little boxes on a checklist.
It doesn't do anything better than any other RPG.
It doesn't have a single creative idea in it.
It is very average in most regards and horrible in some others. Regrettably, there isn't a single thing in the game that could even be considered as above average. Except for the Sound, but that isn't exactly a reason to play game.
It raises the question why the devs even bothered making this game... though obviously it's just a cashgrab by disillusioned devs that ran out of ideas a long time ago.

So if you love RPGs and looking for an all in all slightly below average one, this is your game.
Though ultimately another run of Dark Souls, Nioh, Breath of the Wild, Gothic or even Witcher or Skyrim will be more enjoyable than this.

The main problems it have are some unpolished animations, as example running, and bad detection of some invisible walls. Outside that i didn't have any big bug.
Taking a really ballsy setting, mixing Colonialism and Fantasy, with a god take on art direction, GreedFall is able to provide an exquisite experience on roleplaying terms. Based on several classic options: figth, calaborate, conversate, takedown it silently...or even sneap up and ignore it...
Add to it a decent history and you have here a good sleeper of the year.
