This time you play as a native of Teer Fradee, uprooted by force from your island and taken to the continent of Gacane, where the colonists are from. In this old world ravaged by war and scarred by the Malichor plague and the political scheming of the different factions, you need to regain your freedom and control of your own destiny.

Using diplomacy, cunning or combat, as well as help from allies you make, it's up to you to end one man's ambitions of conquest, which could spell the end for the continent and your island.

Those amusing bugs aside, Greedfall: The Dying World is an earnest project by one of the most earnest game developers out there. It’s a game that is trying hard to say something important about a topic that is of great importance, while structuring it into an RPG that builds on the truly interesting world and lore conceived in the original. Spiders remains the best of the B-tier European RPG developers, and that’s a compliment. Belonging outside of the big-budget blockbuster developers affords a creative freedom that Spiders has never been hesitant to embrace.

GreedFall: The Dying World has a strong combat system, more versatile and expansive when compared to the previous game. It feels more tactical, and you have to consider different weapon types, status conditions, team composition and so on. Granted, the enemies can feel generic, but you have an expansive skill tree to ensure that you mix things up as you go along. I also enjoyed the great world building, and bosses were a highlight for this experience. The team at Spiders surpassed themselves by creating an even better game than the first GreedFall, although this title has shortcomings. There are pacing issues with the story, the romance arcs are weak, and some areas/character arcs felt unfinished. It takes a bit to pick up and feel great, but once it does, you will find yourself spending many hours in this interesting world.

It’s not the worst RPG in the world, but it’s far from the best. The numerous bugs and cut content are a real letdown, but fans of the series will still find something to enjoy here.

GreedFall: The Dying World is yet another budget RPG from Spiders, whose developers continue to struggle with self-improvement. Once again, interesting ideas are not fully realized, and the overall experience is marred by clunky gameplay and inconsistent visuals.

In the end, Greedfall 2 is just another Spiders‘ game. With its great concept that struggles to deliver on many fronts. An average combat system is paired with equally average RPG mechanics, while the attractive world feels lifeless despite its limited number of locations and frequent revisits. The only element lifting it above mediocrity is a well-crafted story driven by companions and intriguing factions. Visual glitches further reinforce the sense of a game whose ambitions exceed its budget, which lacks the self-awareness to realize it.

Thanks to a boatful of superfluous systems, sometimes sterile writing, and ill-considered treatment of colonization, Greedfall: The Dying World fails to reach the heights of the games it borrows from. Yet, its straightforward sincerity and character-focused structure may still charm.

Despite some great ideas and undeniable skill in creating a coherent and engaging world, Greedfall: The Dying World will struggle to be the saving grace for Spiders and Nacon. It never truly escapes its major structural shortcomings (which have only worsened since Greedfall). Its utterly forgettable combat (due in large part to its disconcerting simplicity) fails to generate any real enjoyment. The worst part is that it's hard not to see in this sequel (which isn't really one) the skeleton of a good game. There's soul there, at least. But because of its fragmented structure, outdated design choices, and overall flawed presentation, the title chosen for Spiders' latest release might very well end up being sadly prophetic.
