A puzzle platformer about a journey through an atmospheric wasteland, this game is a pinnacle of design brilliance.

Through excellent gameplay mechanics, phenomenal presentation, and a touching atmosphere, FAR: Lone Sails is the best indie game of 2018 thus far.

I avoided Far for much of the year, thinking it was another bog-standard indie exercise in gloom and ambiguousness. I was delighted to instead discover something beautiful, unpretentious and even hopeful. Don’t make the mistake that I almost did.

Like Journey or Limbo Far stands out with its combination of art- and sound design embedded in beautifully crafted story.

Far: Lone Sails allows players to complete the game at their own pace, and some might find it to be relatively brief. As a matter of fact, the short length is the game’s biggest weakness. I wanted more, but what’s there is something I treasured.

Far: Lone Sails is the kind of game that sticks with you after seeing credits. It delivers a fascinating mystery in a strange land with engaging puzzles, and couples that with a relationship between the player and their oversized mode of transportation. A few areas lack polish and some of the physics felt off here and there, but none of that stopped the story from engaging me in a big way.

Easier to understand than Dark Train, a more soothing Inside. A steam sailboat hurries through the wilderness, and you switch between admiring wonderful visuals and keeping the machine running. [Issue#288]

FAR: Lone Sails is an emotive trip through a dying, yet beautiful world. It's a journey that doesn't last for long, and whose low replay value makes it hard to come back to it... and yet it's also one that's hard to let go once you start it. Fans of such games are definitely advised to give it a go - oh, and don't wait for a discount because its worthy of its price tag as it is.

A side-scrolling vehicle adventure with a platformer’s stylish detailing, FAR: Lone Sails is a simple but charming little ride that gradually builds up momentum and never loses its way.

It's not about the destination, but about the journey, as an ol' sayin' goes that FAR Lone Sails captures perfectly. With so little, this game delivered so much on different levels and provides unique experience, feel and vibe. Embark on this epic, yet short, voyage in peculiar locomotive vehicle that will be your mobile shelter and "home".

Lone Sails is a transfixing, lovely experience, one that takes recurring indie game tropes and does something unique and fun with them. It's short enough that you could play through it in a single two or three-hour session, but it will likely stick with you for a long time. I can see myself going back in a few months just to revisit the ship, like checking in on an old friend.

Driving the unique vessel is very engaging but simple environmental puzzles are pale in comparison. At the end of the day Far: Lone Sails is a stylish, atmospheric tale of journey. [07/2018, p.58]

FAR: Lone Sails is a "Limbo-like" game that forces you to manage and drive an odd vehicle through a wasteland, telling a story of despair, solitude and broken hopes.

FAR: Lone Sails has a very interesting proposition. An adventure that mixes puzzles with platforming, but focuses on a well elaborated narrative with a clear message. A game that clearly deserves our attention.

Our bond with our mechanical companion might have been even stronger when faced with a bit more hardship - by the time things really kick off, the story is nearly over. Nevertheless, Far: Lone Sails' ambiguous, strangely tranquil post-apocalypse is beautifully atmospheric, with a touching message: as long as you have hope, you are never truly alone. The game takes so much more than it gives, forgetting that a journey isn't simply about the means of travel.

A mournful yet bright and enormously warm-hearted adventure with a novel landship mechanic, sublime backdrops and a brilliant score. [Recommended]
  2. A game that offers us both a memorable journey and a place to call home. Of course, how much meaning can one have without the other? Far: Lone Sails gave me a wistful sense of both that I won’t soon forget. [RPS Recommended]

Beneath it all is something human and primal: the desire to carry on, despite unthinkable odds. The desire to keep rolling rightward, to see what lies just beyond the limits of the screen. Few games take that desire as seriously as Far.

Piece of art. One of the most original and best 2D platformers out there. Soundtrack is also excellent.
