I really wanted to love this game. As such, I can only 'like' it. I've wanted a multiplayer Fallout game for some time now, but 76 is not the answer.

Whilst the combat is, for the most part, fun, there are those glitches that see my hunting rifle that should one shot kill some of these enemies, not do any damage at all for maybe three shots in a row.

I'd like to do more quests, but I spend almost all of my time looking for junk to scrap so I can repair my weapons and armour, which seem to break incredibly often. The hunting rifle in Fallout 3 could fire over 650 rounds before breaking. In 76, it feels like I'm only firing 50 or so before the rifle breaks and needs repairing.

Survival mode is a permanently on feature. In 4, you could switch it on and off, but 76 makes it mandatory. I get there are some people who like survival mode, but I'm not one of them, and I feel it should have been an option like it was in 4.

You have to scrap weapons just to see weapon mods, let alone unlock them. At one point my entire inventory was made up of hunting rifles, just to unlock some mods, many of which ended up being mods I didn't even want.

The game has features that it doesn't even tell you about. Juicehead has already identified 30 different features that the game straight up neglects to inform you of.

The way weapons and armour levels up is nonsensical. Leather Armour should be low level armour, with combat and marine armour being higher level, but you can find leather armour at any level.
And the lack of human NPC's... ugh, the world is so empty.

Frankly, the game is tedious, the only good bit is the combat and even that is marred by terrible weapon condition and bugs.

    In a word, boring.

It's a weird version of fallout 4 with worse graphics, several bugs, and clunky multiplayer. Honestly, at this point it's a hard pass.

    What it needs:
Better graphics settings - and utilization. It's not good.
Better ways of editing game settings, other than messing with the .ini
    Improved Key Mapping
    Weird Mob re-spawns.
    Etc.

I have been playing Fallout since the first one, the franchise has evolved quite a lot since then, in good and bad, and with Fallout 76 it is definitely not in good. Fallout76 is not an RPG anymore, but just another action shooter with RPG flavor.

I'm not going to expand on the hundreds of bugs i have yet encountered (CAMP issues, duplicate items, weapons reload issues, vanishing items, invisible enemies and countless others which make my gaming time not fun when i have to relaunch the game every 20 minutes, or when it crashes every hour or so...).
It is almost one month after release and most big issues are not yet corrected.

Anyway here my pros and cons :
    Pros:
    - huge beautiful world,
    - many locations to discover,
    - new perk card system (i like the fact that the SPECIAL are again limited),
    - legendary items farming.

    Cons :
    - no npc,
    - very poor atmosphere (reading terminals and listening to holotapes is not rich world background),
    - no impact on game world at all,
    - extremely poor high level content, it is just a farming game in the end,
    - very bad UI for CAMP, even worse than in Fallout4, not designed for PC users for sure but just for console,
    - perk system (again yes, but this time because you cant choose perks you want, it is randomly given to you, you must hope you get the right card. Anyway you get access to all cards at level 50, i had to wait till this level to get some BASIC cards for my play style like for rifleman perks... this is not good at all, i want to develop a character the way i want, not thanks to random card drops!!!). Also swapping perks every 3 minutes because you need to do something or you need to use another kind of weapon is really annoying.
    - very bad player interaction (no chat, no player vendor...),
    - it feels like a Fallout 4 mod, same assets, just revamped visuals, and it is 3 years after Fallout4,
    - every items from Fallout4 and DLCs are here, makes lore not really consistent with other games, when the nuke fell just few decades ago. IE trapper armor from Far Harbor is found in appalachia.
    - no AZERTY keyboard support again in CAMP mode (was like this already in FALLOUT4), not possible to remap keys for CAMP mode, so with a french keyboard i just cant move forward or left, without switching to QWERTY everytime i want to build my camp.
    - Many bugs from Fallout4 STILL present in Fallout76, this is not acceptable at all...
    - i'm running on fiber optic internet 1gb/s, and still i get too much disconnected... some servers are laggy as hell when some others are just fine.

But i keep playing it, level 103 at this time, i just hope most issues are going to be fixed soon. So far the road map for patches is not very promising...

Unfortunately, even if most bugs are fixed, some core design decisions are probably not going to change so this make this Fallout quite dull in the end.

At the time of this review, i consider that the game is still in BETA stage.

    3/10.

I'm level 43 and I've just finished the main campaign so I've given the game a fair shot before reviewing, overall it's not a great game, it's technically stuck in the stone age, with terrible performance, server issues and bugs galore. On the plus side the locations are varied and interesting, and co-op is fun with a friend, but apart from that it's just a worse Fallout 4 and not really worth the time unless you're a massive fan of the series and you're playing with a friend, because solo it's extremely dull.

This game is Early Access, content bare, and is just an expansion map for Fallout 4, to the point where mods from that title are working without any changes in Fallout 76. That is how little work was done to fix the engine. If you want to see the OCD cleaning simulator, they by all means grab it at full price and hope that they sell enough copies to eventually add in all the missing content and fix the *amazing* array of bugs. It would also be nice if they can stop all the cheating that is already being noticed two days after launch. Just Google "Fallout 76 Nulear Codes" and you will see all Bethesda'a claims about nukes being limited and not overly useful for PvP, just became a lot less true. All because they implemented it in the laziest way possible that took one whole day to bypass.

Fun Fact: They made a profit of $400m+ from Fallout 4, and now have a team size of 400 people. Apparently 85% are all level builders...

It looks the same as Fallout 4 but its as empty as a desert. The only "fun" there is is to either search for someone to kill or wait to get killed. There's also little in the way of stakes, as killing someone only lets you collect their junk, not their weapons, ammo, or other gear. There are no PvP or PvE-only servers—there's no server browser at all—and so this compromise to include PvP but make sure it's not too deadly or damaging results in making fights between players feel toothless, and even pointless. Is this game for you? Ask yourself these questions I asked myself:

Did you like Fallout 4? I sort of did but it was my least favourite Fallout game by a large margin.

Did you enjoy wandering about exploring in Fallout more the story stuff? I did not.

As a PC gamer do you like the idea of playing a Bethesda that has no mod support. Nope!

Do you like the idea of survival games such as Conan Exiles? I didn't know before I played this and now I'll probably never touch the likes of Conan Exiles.

Do you like the idea of broken PvP that punishes both players? Obviously no.

If none or maybe only one of these applies to you like does with me... This maybe isn't the game for you. At the very least for those of you who are interested... maybe wait a year or two and see what they do to improve upon it.

The game is also very prone to hacking. Mods won't come unitl next year, but people can modify the. ini files of the game just like FO4, and alolws them to change stuff like lockpicking being easier and god knows what they might come up with next. A quick look at the game's anti cheat system reveals it's just a joke: https://imgur.com/eIOcWOA
Even while there's definitely a lot to explore, the fact that the game feels empty makes discovering stuff barely exciting, and reading or hearing stuff is just tedious as it makes just want to finish already, after all the mission objective updates itself. You no longer discover stuff that can affect the people around you, all because they are already dead, and all you have to do is launching nukes and boom, that's all.
If you honestly want an online game where exploring is better, you can play minecraft instead. I know it might sound as a joke but the game is actually fun, and has a great replayability.

It totally breaks the immersion and exploration nature of Fallout, and forces you down a select path. Even then, the cards you get are random, so good luck planning your build. An example being, I have encountered opportunities to lock pick, but skill isn't high enough, and I can't advance it until that card randomly appears. Next, the camp building is full of frustrating bugs and limitations, from appearing and disappearing walls, to the environment working against you, and always having to rebuild it when you move it because the terrain won't accept the camp you spend hours creating. Also, good luck crafting any gear above level 1. I couldn't figure it out. I could find some stuff of higher levels and had options to mod, but its kind of rare and most my armor is still level 1 because I can't craft anything but level 1. Also, you will run out of storage space very quickly, and it's bugged (where's your QA dept Bethesda?). It's limited at 400 pounds, and between guns, ammo, food, armor, and of course junk, you will fill that in a heartbeat. The buggy part? You could have a note or holotape that weighs 0, but the stash won't accept it. You have no room, until you take an item out, stash the 0 weight item, and then try and replace what you took out. But it doesn't always work. I could go on, and I will. Graphically, it's gorgeous, and I love it, but the overgrowth is insanely annoying. You can't see anything up ahead because all the flora is as tall as you are. Crouching for a sneak attack outdoors? Not impossible, but not the greatest. Finally, the game tells you very little. It's like the old days of Everquest. Plop! Here you are, now suffer as you try and figure out some base mechanics of this game. Have fun dying a lot as you do. Expand

Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 both have lore that goes against established cannon, retconning those previous games is disrespectful to the writers and developers of past games.

The PC edition launched without a number options typically found in sixty dollar triple A titles. From the options menu you cannot, turn off depth of field, bloom, god rays, bloom, change the Anti Aliasing settings, or set an ultra wide screen resolution. The strange thing is the game does support all those settings if you change them from the configuration files. However the normal user would have a difficult time figuring out how to go about that process. Bethesda omitted those options from the game for seemingly no reason.

After exploring the map, the size of which is one of the games few positives, the gameplay would consist of mostly building your camp and controlling public workshops. The building mode in the game while aggravating at times does work and is improved slightly from Fallout 4.

Other players from my experience will have voice chat turned off and will ignore you after a wave. After twenty hours of leaving my microphone on in hopes that I would make a lasting connection with someone I decided to turn it off so I could listen to an audio book without having to worry about others at all.

All of the good things in Fallout 76 can be better found in Fallout 4, and basically this game is Fallout 4 striped of it's substantial story elements and combined with the restrictions of a multiplayer game.

Not that it matters any way, you will get bored long before.
There are quests in the game, told by robots and holotapes.
The holo tapes can be long narratives recorded by people that lived there before.
One problem is that they can be so long that they get interrupted by radio transmissions and there is no way to go back and listen to that holotape again.
So if there was important information at the end of it, you wont here it.
Right now you should not buy this game, wait a year for the 2019 winter sale.
Perhaps by then they will have put in the options for setting your FOV and added a Push to Talk option.

The true darkness is on the other side. Take a look on several random profiles that gave "10" to this game. Almost like 90% of them have only 1 review (for FO76) and profile names like "superplayer1984". In their reviews, there're writing everything via one of two copypastas: 1) describing all the game features were named by bethesda in trailers (some of which simply even don't exist) and literally telling everything is working perfectly. 2) callin everyone who left a bad review a hater who never played the game.

The second part is as you all know, Bethesda initially released game only on Beth.net - not on Steam, GOG etc. Why? Yes, eaxactly. You can't leave a review there. At least, so easily. Question is - what is it like?

Yes, we all know (especially those who are reading political news) how it looks. Bethesda (I'm not saying directly Pete Hines, obviously not, but through the hands of sub-companies, "family" bloggers and "friendly" game journalists) is litereally using the bots to leave positive reviews and leaving 10 points to at least somehow save catastrophic ratings of the game. Almost all accounts that made 10/10 FO76 reviews were made not by real players behind them, but by certain people, for only one goal - try to save the game ratings on the platform they can't affect directly.

Don't get me wrong. Bethesda was and today still [IS] my favourite game company. But the abyss they are making between themselves and community, how they allow marketing stuff to rule the PR company and game development itself, and how obviously they are trying to hide any possible negative critics about the game - it's really, really sad.

I'm neither FO 76 fan or hater. I just don't care about it - I won't play it and wait for Starfield and TES VI.
Though, I played more than 20 hours on my friend gaming PC to not let myself make a prejudged review.
I also wish every player who bought it to have the best possible time in it.
Fallout 76 is not a "zero" game. But it's a very, very bad game. Extremely outdated engine. Terrible performance. Awful cheating/hacking protection. But what if most important, it's a soulless game which has even less to have at least something in commong with FO series than FO4 had. It's empty, repeative and just boring.
I won't give "0" to this game. But I'll give as maximum as "3" because this is what FO76 deserves.

I was actually excited for a multiplayer Fallout game, but this game is just boring. People can't attack you unless you want them to. I'm level 10 now and I honestly don't know. You can complete "go press a button on a computer terminal" and/or "kill enemies until the timer runs out" quests to gain experience then haul stuff back to your stash. That's basically it. With almost no plot, no NPCs, no penalty for dying, such a low difficulty to play, very little extremely casual PVP... I really don't see why anyone would put more than a few hours into this game. The point of the game really seems to be to explore the map and look at the pretty scenery. With no real in-game motivation to keep progressing, it almost feels like you would be better off running through all the areas without fighting anything so that you can see all the sights without having to waste time leveling up. I'm willing to give it a 3 for now, maybe it's just the beginning content that is bland but I really see no hope for this game getting better as I rank up. Expand

It was not designed for, or even balanced playing for playing solo even though Pete H. insisted that it was.

In summary, probably not the game you are wanting it to be, more bugs than previous Bethesda games, severely under preforms in combat, UI and AI when compared to other AAA titles. but decent enough to pass the time if you have someone to play it with or when you are waiting for something else to come out.

The few positives I have for it are things like the scenery which are absolutely gorgeous at times, and the music which is always a delight. I really like some of the new firearms in the game, like the new pump action shotgun is just absolutely enjoyable. But why in the good green grass of West Virginia are there pipe pistols? Why are there super mutants? I love the Brotherhood of Steel, but why have we broken lore to shoehorn them in?

I know there are corrected lore to explain all of these things for this game, but it's just rather silly. I hope the people who like this game have a great time and enjoy what they enjoy, but it just reminds me we could have had an awesome 2-4 player co-op Fallout.

Like many other gamers, I love Fallout, for me is one of the biggest universes in the history of video games. Excellent games, exceeding expectations and the certainty of many good times, was something Bethesda had accustomed us to, and expected the same here, my hype was very high.
And the day came, and with it the disappointment, the frustration, the sadness, the feeling of being deceived. But even there, I still tried to enjoy the game, tried to forget problems and bugs, tried to play, explore and have fun. The weeks passed, the patchs, fixes and updates arrived and little changed, and I kept going but the game continue the same, nothing changed.

Today, maybe after 100 hours since i started my journey, after trying almost everything there the game has to offer and explore every corner of the map, after have read and seen so much about this game, I think I can review it properly.
I'm trying to ponder what I write and not do a review in fury, but so little good I have to write.
I feel we were deceived by Bethesda, the game was not ready, and even if it transforms in the next few months Bethesda is not a small company, that may need to rush a game for financial reasons, that may not have the money or human resources to create a quality product, ready from day one. Is unacceptable and incomprehensible.

I'm not going to talk much about the bugs, but everyone knows that many of them were already on Fallout 4 and many of them the community corrected with mods. I'm not going to talk much about server instability, crashes and technical problems. I'm not even go talk about the absurd prices on the Atomic Store.
I only want to talk about the lack of NPCs and the game history, which are very interconnected, and which are what I miss most against the other Bethesda games. Bethesda used the justification to the lack of NPC's was something innovative, but the argument seems more like a justification for an unfinished work that no one wanted to finish. Obviously it's easier to say that is "part of the picture", that is working as intended than completing what is missing.
And this lack of NPC's affects the story a lot, after a short time the history becomes so predictable in any quest line that I believe even Bethesda realized that and quit to continue to extend the quest lines, as we were used to on the previous Fallout games.

Unfortunately I have to agree with many others who dislike the game, the point where it is. And recommend anyone interested in the game to try another game, and hope that someday Bethesda can deliver us what they really promised us.

To make it clear: my gaming experience in the Fallout series starts from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and in TES – from Oblivion (I got my first PC at the time of release of the last one). I’m not a die-hard fan, but from these days I completed each game from the both of the series thoroughly, with the time passing and modding resources growing and a new ways of playthrough appearing. Skyrim turns 7 years this November and I’m installing it on my PC once in a half of a year from the moment of its release, load with ton of mods and go on exploring again. Fallout 4 is on my hard drive from the day of release. There is no need to discuss other games in that review, but I want to mention my high appreciation of the games from the Dishonored, Doom, Prey and Wolfenstein series, released by the departments of your company.

I’d like to call myself a fan of Bethesda studios. I mean, among the other studios you create a worlds that can engage a gamer for years. It’s an incredible work. I’m studying gamedev now and I know what I’m talking about. By the way I started to learn it also due to my childhood experiences taken in games including the works of yours. And furthermore, these worlds I mentioned allow gamer to build up his own unique experience using mods. This extends a living cycle and replayability of games a lot. But we have a thing there.

You know it yourself about the bugs, glitches and gameplay problems of beta version, about the easiness of cheating, about lore, about the paper discs, about uninstalling the game, etc. I see no reason to write about it all, the other users and journalists done that for me already. All of these things could be forgiven and they would forgive.

What is ruining the general impression of the game is total unoriginality and the fact that the game itself is not finished (even in the context of open beta version). It’s obvious that the game is always a profit-oriented product, but this time the profit looks like the only reason to make a game. You can see an indifference to the final quality of a product in many aspects such as animations, questing, fractions, crafting, graphics, PvP interaction (more on this later). You did a great job, but I’m sure you know it – to make a game on a quality level of your previous releases you must have done a 10 times better. Now it looks like Fallout 4 with a great fan-made multiplayer mode. You know exactly why – the game uses a huge percent of content and code directly from Fallout 4, that had its own visual and gameplay style after all. That is not a problem. The problem is that the remaining part of content made without the proper effort. I’d undoubtedly support a small team of modders made such mod for a single player game. This quality would be an unbelievable success. But not for Bethesda level of studios.

The second problem is uncomplicated, absolutely non-challenging PvP and survival in multiplayer game set in a post-apocalyptic world.

In this case the statement about support for mods sounded like an avoiding the responsibility for an incomplete final product. Something like “modders will improve, we provide the ground”. For now, after all the waves of hateful reviews, you probably see that it doesn’t work that way.

Due to a very high target you had to hit I evaluate your work strictly comparing it with previous experience. I tried my best with beta, sessions of which took place in the dead of night in my country. And after participating I have to note with my regret that your decisions taken this time are wrong.

Thanks for the beta. Now I assure that there is no sense in buying the game for now, until the serious update and improvement releases. Will these improvements be made by the studio or implemented by modders – time will show, but this game have to change greatly.

I’d like to call myself a fan of Bethesda studios. But now I can’t.

We have terminal entries and notes about all these cool apocalyptic events as the scorched expanded, and we don't get to be there. ---------------------------------------------
    Orig review:

Fallout 76 is a good concept and has enjoyable core gameplay. However, as the opening days grew on the servers started acting funny and bugs and glitches became more common. Additionally, the day 1 patch that was promised never arrived (on PC): it's still version 1.0.0.6 like during the last of the beta.

Locations and quests tend to be hit and miss, but overall they're ok enough.

The economy and item storage limitations however hurt this game the most: you can neither store items nor sell them easily, as merchants have small, slow replenishment cap pools, and are linked in a handful of factions, and you can't barter either, and even when you buy something the merchant only has a fraction of what you paid with afterwords (about 1/4), so you can't even trade for your caps back.

These issues shouldn't be hard to fix and yet there's only been vague promises, and they ultimately relegate what could have been a 7-8/10 to a 6/10.

Also, it runs like crap on my 1070 hex core gaming setup, I have to exit and rejoin the game every hour or so to stop the horrible memory leaks (which also sometimes require a system restart) and for the love of God the game doesn't even CLOSE properly and I have to task manager kill the process to get it to exit...

    What a disaster.

Fallout 76 is a game that attempts to be something different from its predecessors. Unfortunately, that leads to 'loss of identity' and 'more technical difficulties'.

    The Outstanding:
    * The world is massive and active effort is put in to diversify each environment. [10/10]

    The Good:
    * You can hang with friends and goof around wearing a pink dress! [8/10]
    * The visuals and the scenery are at times really pleasant. [7/10]
    * 'Enemy variety' is more than any other previous entry. [6/10]

    The Bad:
    * Introduction of microtransactions through 'Atom Shop'. [4/10]
    * The game has those typical Bethesda bugs, and these are compounded by Bethesda venturing into the online world for the first time. [3/10]
    * Some basic obvious features are missing at launch; i.e. push-to-talk button, FOV settings, key-binding issues. [2/10]
    * Shooting mechanics are not the best. As in, if you are an FPS player, you'll find this to be very very average. [4/10]
    * Most quests (40 hours in) are "Start➡Locate➡Shoot➡Loot" and based on who you are, that can get boring early on. [2/10]
    * No actual incentive for PvPing other than 'wanting to'. [2/10]
    * A specific PvP style that requires following an 'honor system'! And can be exploited in different ways. For example:
Player A attacks B. B takes very little damage. B puts on the best gear and weapon and almost one-shots player A. [2/10]
    * Lack of general polish. Presumably due to improper or limited testing. Example: Long holotapes (5-6 minute audio tapes) that you need to listen to without getting disturbed. They surely hadn't tested this in a multiplayer environment.) [3/10]

The Ugly (things that would infuriate fans)
    * The game uses Creation Engine, which seems inherently flawed for an 'online' coop game. Example: FPS is tied to your in-game speed. [1/10]
    * Some issues and bugs that existed in the past 2 installments and were reported ad nauseam and even made news, are still present in this game. [1/10]
    * No human NPCs. This changes the DNA of this Fallout game drastically, if not eliminate it completely. [0/10]
    * Lack of 'mods' which is one of the main attractions of any Fallout game. Obviously 'mods' can't be introduced to public servers. But "there won't be any mod-supported custom servers until November 2019 at the soonest" based on Pete Hines, vice president of Bethesda. [0/10]

    Rating Average: 3.5

    Summary
Bethesda has tried something new here. Regardless of their intention, they have created a product that focuses on something that is not their strong suit.
To bring up a comparison; imagine a game like Destiny but without the superb shooting and without any NPCs, but with a bigger map. That is Fallout 76 for you.

Also Story: So lala...

Love the in-game world, but this is barely a game, and definitely not what Fallout should be. Still playing with 25 hours of in-game play, but what is the point. What are workshops for? Why do I build when the game world resets. Why the hell is there a limit of stored resources when that is pretty much all we have to do is collect things? Total Crap!

I also made an account here to rate this game.

I've been playing videogames since Atari, and though I rarely play AAA titles, my wife has loved watching me play F3, NV & F4, and her sister & bf also love them. So even though we were all worried about "online only" we were excited to at least run around together.

This game is everything we feared it would be, except, amazingly, it's 10 times worse.

Every aspect of the game reeks of "rush job". or "we did no work". Everything.

--The UI does not work for "always on" gaming because when you're taking hits, you have no easy way to eat/drink/heal without going into the UI.

But dying has almost no penalty, so once you figure this out you can just respawn forever until you've killed all the monsters.

-As you've probably heard, there's using the same engine since Morrowind. How in the world can my PC, with a new GF2080, not get 60 FPS on this? On our GF 1080 machine, I had to put everything on LOW just to get it to start and not crash. HOW is this even possible??

--Try VATS once, then try to tell me any thought or consideration went into this game.. A: How can you allow this auto-aim crap for PvP? B: It's ridiculous to have the gun facing AWAY from an enemy, push VATS and SHOOT, and you hit your target.

--The way to initiate PvP is completely broken, because the attacked player has a huge advantage. P1 does almost no damage to P2 until P2 shoot backs. So P1 gets full damage. The only way PvP works is if you trick someone into shooting you first. But there's no incentive to use PvP at all in-game.

--Having the quests revolve around holotapes is insane, because you never have time to sit around and listen when you get them. Either you're going to find another soon, or a note to read, or you're hearing other people on the mic, or you're simply playing the game and can't focus on them. I tried giving the story a chance but the game just does not let you immerse yourself. It doesn't seem interesting anyway, though.

--Listen to the radio. A few new songs. THEN THE EXACT SAME SONGS YOU'VE HEARD FOR HOURS IN F4 ARE BACK. Lazy lazy LAZY. How hard is it to license new music for the setting of WV, if you didn't want to produce your own??

--Even the act of friending/joining someone else's game is confusing, because it's not intuitive or explained.

--People can't mod this & fix it. Thanks!

F76 is basically all the parts of F4 that were mindless grinds (like never-ending quest series, building crap) but worse.

I've been extremely disappointed by modern gaming "trends" ruining fantastic game series (e.g. MGSV, which is 80 hours of picking daises and about 2 hours of story) but this is the first time I'm kind of insulted by a game studio.
Here's the MAIN thing, and why this game is so disappointing.

There's a huge difference between a game that isn't very good, but is worth playing, and a game that is just completely banal, no fun, not creative, and not worth anyone's time.

Sonic 06 is an infamously bad game -- tons of glitches, comically bad controls, etc. -- but it has heart and some redeeming qualities (music, cutscenes, and it's semi-fun once you understand the meta of how to get around the truly terrible controls).

Lots of games are awful by objective standards, but once you get over their hurdles, can be enjoyable.

F76 is completely soulless, as many have described it. Outside of the expansive map (there isn't much to actually do in it that's fun) and recreating WV, it seems NO work, thought of planning went into this.

Bethesda knew they can sell it for $60, it'll make a profit, and all the people who review games for a living and are basically 3rd-party PR for games companies, will talk about it, be gentle with it, and not rip it to shreads. Because they couldn't care less about videogaming or us, the consumer.

Don't feed the crap machine, please. For the love of God, if you care about videogames at all, DO NOT BUY THIS FOR $60.

I'll get this for my wife and I for $20 or less for the sheer experience of having 1 game my wife will play with me, and she loves WV. We'll explore the map and then probably stop playing it, because it just isn't fun. There's no incentive to play it unless you just like collecting tape and screwdrivers.

A 3/10 is more than fair. Bethesda has piled crap on us, the loyal FO fans, so I'm glad people are piling the crap on them. As someone who runs a special-events business I just don't understand how a company can just spit on their customer and then act like they should be grateful.

GIVE people refunds who want one. STOP using this awful launcher (deleted my entire game on beta day! Nice!). MAKE IT UP to people who've trusted you, Bethesda.
Oh, and play FO: New California! (New Vegas mod)

My mistake. So here I am on Metacritic creating an account to write a review about it.

Fallout 76 is not like Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas, 4, or even Tactics. There are no meaningful choices to make. Many of the quests appear to be randomly-generated repeats or mild variations with different scorched red things to fight. There are no characters. There are stories, but they're in the form of depressing audiotapes and looting corpses.

The perks system is interesting. I really like the mechanics of opening packs and filling slots with different cards to create unique builds. Every new character would be a completely unique experience based on those random draws. Unfortunately, the system is constrained by multiplayer balance and why can't I lockpick, what was I training for in the vault my whole life, this should be an essential and basic skill known by every wunderkind in the vault... though some of the cards have funny pictures in the Fallout style.

The graphics are also nice. Appalachia is presented well and the soundtrack was just starting to grow on me. I'd just stumbled across an interesting little shack in the woods when

"Hey man, you want to join up to do some quests, easy gold!"

Three voices start blaring out on the computer speakers, completely erasing the immersion of the Appalachian setting. I hadn't joined any party voice or set any public interaction settings. It was jarring especially when they started shooting at me after I didn't reply (wasn't wearing headphones).

So I'm giving this version of Fallout a bad score. True, I shouldn't have spent money on it without checking what it really was first, or I would have waited for it to go on sale in a few months. Despite that leaving a bad taste in my mouth, the game is a disappointment and I hope future Fallout games don't follow the same route, and return to the engaging characters, moral dilemmas, and unique stories from the previous games. Instead random strangers shout at you and chase away any hope of immersive storytelling.

A good idea executed badly across the boards, with a lot of evidence that Bethesda did not prioritize the customer with any of their decision-making during the development or marketing of this game.

It is a mediocre effort unworthy of the Bethesda legacy, and offers little of the Fallout brand's personality and style beyond the purely aesthetic, and it doesn't even manage that well.

At its best, Fallout 76 is an opportunity for you and a friend or three to romp around a gameworld made to look like part of the Fallout world, and if all you really wanted out of the game was that, you might be perfectly happy with it.

Don't bother looking for rich story (there is very little), compelling characters (there are very nearly none) or a tapestry of lore to explore (everything you'll learn about post-apoc Appalachia will come from computer terminals and audio logs, with very little exception).

This design decision to have no NPC's and no driving storylines makes playing Fallout 76 feel like a study in futility. You can pick a direction and go in it, but it won't matter. There's nobody of interest to find, no storylines to stumble across and a tremendous amount of repetitious quests that all bleed into eachother after a few hours and become a mindless exercise in numbing tedium.

By the time you wind up having some random nobody from the internet follow you around for half an hour making stupid noises in the Microphone and asking you about your genitals, you might just be grateful for the break in monotony.

I'll preface my review by saying Fallout has been my favourite franchise since fallout 3, wasteland survival is one of my favourite genres. Fallout 76 was something I looked forward to since they announced it. Then the beta dropped and I thought "Oh this is rough, guess they'll fix it like they said they plan to." But I've been playing it since launch and all the main elements are broken, and the absence of live NPCs (which used to bring flavour to the world) just makes the game so lonely that those broken elements get fixated on. The PvP is broken and so unbalanced, favouring the attacked player in every fight. Which even if they win the attacker gets nothing but scrap and then gets a bounty which makes them open to being attacked by anyone but unable to damage anyone until they get a hit on you. The end boss is pretty close to unkillable in the allotted period when you're a higher level due to having a couple hundred million health. The servers are constantly crashing, my frame rate is usually terrible, frequently I need to switch servers just to get a temporary bump in frame rate.
Honestly, I really want to like this game and I know it can be good, but it isn't right now. It's a buggy mess that is nowhere near what was promised. If you haven't bought it yet don't. They have a lot to fix, they can do it. But until they do, don't waste your money.

The game is a bit fun, but the bugs, the leveling system and the enemy-spawning-system annoys me. But also i give a bit hope in this game, because i trust the developing studio do make a better 76 in the future. My recommendation: Do not buy it NOW!

I mostly prefer this game, because I experienced it, and this kind of experience is good to best, not to mention the updates we will get in the future! Don't get me wrong, the bugs can be a bit annoying but not game breaking. I mostly shrug one and move along when I encounter one. About the gameplay: You loot resources if you want(just like in Fallout 4), some quests need some resources to progress. But when you loot resources by just grabbing them up, the game doesn't feel grindy, it's just like Fallout 4 in mechanics. You won't ecounter NPCs, the game feels empty BUT the WHOLE game is a Pre-sequel to the other Fallout games, and THIS is THE ambience of the game. You can find out why this game is empty, because the story is all about investigating the "why and where".

About the atomic shop and microtransactions:
Feels like a money grab first, but after jumping in, you can earn atoms by completing quests, levelling up, completing daily and weekly challenges. I managed to get 1800 atoms overall by just playing 30 hours/ getting to level 33. A power armor paint(for T-45, T-60, X-01 armours unlocked account wide) costs 1400-1800 atoms, and I nailed one by just playing the game. If you find in-game microtransactions expensive, try thinking strategically. Buy the game discounted for like 30 euros(instead of the original 60), then spend the other 30 for juicy cosmetics IF YOU WANT, I must underscore the "optional" for you of course. :)

Have fun playing the game if you bought the game after seeing this review, and watch out for deathclaws in early levels! ;)

Oh, and to mention: Good future DLCs cancelled because of this **** or at least delayed. Money talks, Bethesda, for you at least, but you won't crawl your reputation out of this mess anytime soon.

My favourite part has to be the building. You got a decent ammount of choice for free stuff (trust me, a lot of cool stuff is locked behind a paywall). It wouldnt be that much of an issue, but they started adding utility objects. The Personal Terminal and the Punch bowl are free, but the better ones, collectatron which collects free junk at a relatevely decent pace (Slower than a workshop harvester), and a fridge in which you can put food items to make them decay slower, are locked behind the atom paywall.
Building is well done, but with so much content locked in the atomic shop, and the miniscule budget that does not really allow you to make anything relatively big along with a very small building area, it is not that great.
The world is very well designed, with a lot of intresting locations, but the problem is that it feels empty. They are atleast working on a new mode, where npc will be a thing. For now you got a bunch of clones of diffirent robots. You got Merchants, and Mr.Handies. While there are a few more that dont really matter.

The Story is just a bunch of notes and holotapes, which i dont bother to read or listen to.

Unlike in fallout 4, you dont have all the plans for weapons, buildings, you gotta unlcock them, but certain weapons still need perks to be crafted. The problem is that the plan item itself does not warn you of that. This is a problem for vendors, because weapon plans are pretty expensive cap-wise, so you could buy a plan that you learn, only to realise you cant craft it because you need a perk.
While i could mention the bugs, i think you heard enough of em alredy.

I recently came back to the game in 2020, and I'm still very unimpressed.

Fallout 76 is a massively multiplayer online game that encourages player cooperation, and paying money in the Atomic Shop (in game purchasing tool to help you speed up your progress or just generally be better at the game.) The game feels very grindy, and by that I mean it will take you a long time to get good gear and loot in the game. A very long time. Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't really fun or polished enough to make all that time grinding worth your while. This feels like it's purposeful, due to how often the game encourages you to spend more cash at the Atomic Shop to acquire resources and gear. Let me remind you that this game's launch date retail price was $59.99. The 'pay to win' feature of Fallout 76 is very annoying, ham fisted, and feels almost like begging. I'm often embarrassed by how much energy the publisher of the game put into begging people for more money.

The story of Fallout 76 is boring, erratic, and not very engaging. The add-ons to the game improved this issue, but didn't make the story good. I wont even explain the story to point out how bad it is piece by piece. That's how boring it is. I'm too bored by it to criticize it fully. Trust me when I say you're not missing out on a lot of interesting and gripping franchise lore.

The gameplay of Fallout 76 is buggy to this day, and pretty boring as far as 'looter shooters' go. There's not a ton of variety in how you dispatch enemies, and the more fun you want to have in the game, the more boring hours you'll have to invest in grinding for fun gear and loot, or the more money you'll have to spend on fun gear and loot. What's the grind like? Ammo is hard to come by, and when you find it, it's not much. You can buy ammo though! Fusion cores, which fuel the game's iconic power armor, burn out quickly and are hard to find. You can buy more though! Legendary enemies spawn very infrequently, and when they do, there's no guarantee that they'll drop really good loot. The loot thing might be a bug though, I'm not 100% sure. Then again, what's a bug and what's a feature is hard to discern in Fallout 76. Overall, gameplay feels rather dumbed down, and not as fun as Fallout 4. the polish is lacking, the fun is lacking, the engagement is lacking, my interest is lacking.

Graphically, the game looks fine, when it's running well. The game doesn't always perform very well graphically, so it can be hard to judge whether or not some textures look horrible, or whether they just never loaded into the game correctly. It's not mind blowing by any stretch, and is outclassed by many games made for inferior hardware.

The music of Fallout 76 is... meh. Repetitive, recycled, and not very noteworthy. It didn't have to be great or anything, but it's definitely not contributing anything meaningful to the game. Best part was the Country Roads cover.

Overall, Fallout 76 is an annoying game in more ways than one. It's a slog to get through without indulging in microtransactions, and nobody in their right mind would suggest you actually indulge in the microtransactions, so the game is just boring and annoying. Some of the add-ons do bring in content that's worth your time, but the game overall is very bad, and the add-ons don't fix anything enough for it to deserve your investment.

There is no NPC and the other players of the 24 players map are not interacting beyond the hot mike (if you have a microphone, it is - by default - always on) or the PvP.

The game engine and graphics are seriously outdated: it was used probably a decade ago or two. The game lags seriously despite being my network being on a fibre broadband service with less than 30 ms of ping on typical MMOs: as a result of this lag, it usually takes 1-2 seconds for an enemy to be hit by the bullet I just shot. This is very unsatisfactory. The RPG element is non existent as you do not need to develop your character - it is a survival game without consequences. The social element is both ridiculous and not required: who needs to take pictures whilst taking poses, apply filters, and pretty much uploading that to instagram? In short, this game is a terrible disappointment, I made a mistake pre-ordering it and received the just reward of a polished mud-ball: lesson learned. Don't do the same mistake, keep your money for something useful.

I'm not sure I can even say I'm disappointed, because this was where things appeared to be going eventually with Bethesda's take on the franchise. Bethesda's writing was never its strong point, with their takes on the Fallout universe, in particular, falling short in comparison to the likes of Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas. With Fallout 76, they've virtually abandoned it altogether, reducing literally all storytelling to reading scraps of paper and listening to audiotapes. It's simply staggering that Bethesda made these design choices, and leaves me with little enthusiasm for any other titles they are due to produce in the coming years. I might come back to 76 in a year but probably only if they finally put proper NPC's in it because a Fallout game without real characters (and no, I don't value random encounters with a handful of anonymous players as an adequate replacement - I shouldn't have to make my own fun from scratch in a Fallout game) is simply an empty, literal wasteland of content. To everyone reading this, ask yourself this question now: Is there any element from my Fallout 76 experience that stood out in any positive way?
My answer: no. There wasn't a single positive element of this game that made me go "wow", made me excited, or immersed me completely in the moment. Not one. Onto the review:

Note: None of the mechanical or performace elements are based on the B.E.T.A.
Note 2: it's just my personal experience of the game, this won't include things like the "security" debacle that seems to be full swing (I haven't had any security issues yet)
Note 3: This game may have "Fallout" in it's title, but I won't be comparing it to other Fallout games (except the lore), it's just too different.
So let's break down each element into a summed up review:

Story: There isn't one. There really isn't.

Lore: Butchered. So much in this contradicts previously established lore. You can handle things being retconned if there is a legitimate and justified story/narrative reason for doing so. Bethesda has changed things just so that they can shove enemies, symbols and other things that tickle your nostalgia into the game for zero justifiable reasons. In my personal opinion this is the WORST part of the entire game, because it not only ruins my fun in this game, but potentially ruins my ability to enjoy the previous games because of the changes.

NPC's: There aren't any. There really aren't. You get a couple of robots that aren't utterly lifeless. That's it.

Quests: Every single quest in this game feels like a randomly generated fetch quest. It's that bad.

World/Worldbuilding: Reasonable, I'd give them a point for this if it wasn't completely ruined by the overwhelming feeling of emptiness you experience as you run around. Perhaps if there were more players, like 3-4x as many players per server, things would be better. But that's speculation, and there isn't.

Combat: Mechanically fine, one of the few things that doesn't immediately frustrate you. Not great or revolutionary though, just fine. You will however likely get totally bored with killing the same few enemies hundreds of times over. Made worse by the respawn rate of enemies meaning in the space of half an hour you can clear the same area of the same enemies as many as 5 times. It's clear they tried to fix this by adding the unique bosses/spawns, but it simply doesn't do enough as they are too few and far between.

Ambiance/Environment: good at times. Perhaps the only element of this entire game that you could say was good, and that's only some of the time. Graphical bugs break what little good environment building exists.

Graphics: antiquated in 2015 when Fallout 4 came out, now they're ancient.
-One of my friends has ultra widescreen and there's no support for it at all, meaning the resolution is forced to full still. What does that mean? The whole game is stretched on his monitor making it virtually unplayable.

Performance: terrible. I have an above-average PC and my FPS is terrible, but considering Bethesda limits your FPS to 62.5 Maximum, I'm not missing out on much. I haven't crashed yet, so that's new in a BGS game. Others probably aren't so lucky.

UI/Controls: ported from console, downright unusable at times. Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. I've been complaining about this for YEARS. There is no excuse for this anymore. Bethesda should be making proper PC HUDs and UIs.
-PIPboy HUD is immersive and totally fine in a singleplayer game. Not at all in a game where you can't pause when it opens. It is too slow to navigate and might lead to you getting killed constantly if the game was even remotely difficult.

Difficulty: Once you get to level 6 or 7, you basically become invincible. Not joking. Just ignore where you're supposed to go, and go kill enemies 3-4x your level. I did. Maybe you can't do this with a controller, but with a mouse and keyboard there is no challenge for me.

PvP/multiplayer: I can't even start talking about this without getting upset and going on a rant. I'll just say this: the worst PvP system I have ever seen in my life.

PvE/multiplayer: The only other redeeming quality of this game. You can pop a few beers and have fun with friends laughing at bugs, terrible writing and other players doing/saying dumb things.

The saving grace of Bethesda games up to this point is the skilled and dedicated Modding community coming in and fixing the deficits of the product. Not only does this game not have real modding capability, but it's not a base game that inspires people to spend hundreds of hours fixing things.

    Plus sides:
+The occasional fun moment with some friends, that wears off in the first couple of hours though.
+The occasional environment or ambient or setting

    Negatives:
    - Just about everything else.

Final Score: 2/10, and that's generous. As much as it saddens me to say this about anything Fallout: just save your money.

In now almost 3 decades (sigh) of computer gaming, I think this is the most disapointing game ever released by a major company.
Just read all those negatives review, this time they are relevant...
I've underscored the game a bit considering the hype and the AAA title.
If it was produced by some lambda company and if this game was not a sequel it would deserve a 4, maybe 5.

    1. Story. Just like in porn...You havent NPC, amazing characters etc. You have nothing.
    2. PvP. Broken. If you want kill somebody, you need maybe 50-60 shoots in head to kill him/her. And if you started fight and she/he wants to kill you back. He just waits, takes most powerful weapons, looks at you and shoots you in your face. And you will die. That is all. If you want kill somebody,

    3. Wolderful world. But empty with horrible respawn enemies...Really. You just clear one room and whoooo, 10 enemies just around you to say: "Hello there."
    4. Crafting. First time, that is good thing.
    5. It isnt on Steam. You must use their launcher and it is broken. Always:)

So if you want play Fallout, just play 1,2, New Vegas or in some ways 4 or 3. Still better then this ****

This is the result of laziness. A Fallout 4 mod quickly spun into its own game, filled with....nothing, Base building for zero purpose, PVP that doesn't work and a world thats so lacking in content its embarrassing.

Bugs, Lack on industry standard graphic elements, VATS system doesn't fit in a online multiplayer game, and overall just poor execution. It is an aging engine with a slight re-skin.

Thank God you can give back the game and Bethesda will give you back your money. I don't know what to say. This game is a crap in every part of it. Sweet words before and hard reality after. Its typical in modern words.

Three dead giveaways of why this game screams 'shameless cash grab':

    1. Relies heavily on borrowed assets from other games. Mostly Fallout 4, (although scorchbeasts remind me a lot of Skyrim's dragons >_< ). 2. 2. No npc's means first and foremost a huge cut in production costs: no voice overs from contracted famous people, no motion capturing for their animations, no elaborate set dressing like homes and towns for them to live in, less money needed for writing compelling narrative, etc.

    3. Preorder to 'beta' (read: stress test for a very short while). AAA developers seriously need to stop doing that. The whole 'make preordering appealing for various reasons' strategy is about one thing only: making more money at a time when a product hasn't been held up to public scrutiny yet. For indy developers and start-ups, pre-ordering (based on sufficient information) is a great idea to fund new projects, but for AAA devs it's really bad practice and commonly used to sell subpar products solely based on their reputation and with very little information to go on.

I think this is a new low for Bethesda. I loved and played their games to bits since Morrowind, and I modded and cared for them, but I've seen inspired writing and immersive storytelling go down the drain since Oblivion (Obsidian's FO:NV being the only exception), like their ideas on how to run and control their games have take a turn for the worse with Creation Clubs and paid mods.

It saddens me as it seems they don't even understand the core aspects of what used to make their games so special anymore. The Fallout IP is turning into a parody of itself, rather than the refreshing parody of reality that it used to represent.

PVP Mechanics aren´t thought out well, Bethesda is creatively dead. You can access nuke codes via Reddit instead of looking for them ingame - seriously? Oh my god, such a disappointment to the whole Franchise. But to be honest, I already saw it before, Bethesdas Way downhill already started with Fallout 4 in my opinion, because PC optimization was crap right from the beginning and not much has changed until now. Basically it's an asset flip of Fallout 4, minus real quests, plus multiplayer. And the multiplayer serves absolutely no purpose in this game, it's just in there because Bethesda wanted to dip their toe in the water of "live service games", or in other words: Cash in on the most profitable industry trend. The game is so ridiculously easy most of the times, there is zero reason to ever play with other players. And PVP doesn't even exist in this game. I mean in theory it does, but in reality it's just not a thing. The spank system is the most broken and stupid concept I've ever seen in a "PVP" game.

Besides all of this, the technical state of the game is an insult to every gamer. Even on systems with a 1080ti the game runs like absolute dog. The field of view can not be adjusted, it doesn't even support widescreen monitors (yet), the frame rate is locked to 60fps due to the horribly aging Creation engine in use and how its physics are tied to the frame rate, patches in this game can be larger than the actual game itself without offering any new content, the beta deleted itself at one point, and countless other ridiculous issues that occurred during my beta plays.

This is a 20$ early access game on Steam. Unfortunately it is sold at 60$, by a company notorious for not fixing any bugs in their games.

And ironically enough Bethesda, the only people who could save you now, are the ones you locked out of this game: your modding community.

Stay away from this hot garbage, no studio should get away with this level of laziness or incompetence.

I point this out only to highlight that the performance of the game will not be the scapegoat of why this "game" (let's be real, there is no game here) is so terrible. It is utterly boring and aimless. I won't cover all of the reasons why it is so bad, just watch Jim Sterlings impressions.

Instead, allow me to give you some context. Firstly, I have played and beaten Fallout 4 and all DLC, with a modest 85 hour playtime (no where near what some might sink in), but it is fair to say I enjoyed it in spite of its many flaws. I also love survival games as a genre, with Subnautica being one of my all time favourites. And feel free to check my profile, this is the lowest score I have ever given a game, as I genuinely feel it deserves this rating. I am a fair and positive reviewer, and it is sad to say that I really think this "AAA" game has been fairly and generously rated by me.

I don't usually post reviews so close to a games release, and I certainly don't usually give negative reviews. But, this review is warranted, this is not a gut-reaction to "Change", that a lot of games get unfairly criticised for. I was really excited for the survival aspects and base building aspects of this game. But they have truly misunderstood what makes those games fun and rewarding.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
