I enjoyed this game. It's not perfect, and it's not what I'd expect from Bethesda. It's less of an RPG and more of a Survival Game. It reminds me a bit of Seven Days to Die and other Zombie Survival games from the early 10s. Lots of scavenging, building, and what have you. Still, there is some interesting information poking around in the background with logs and messages and on terminals and all that. I will admit, I do think the lack of NPCs is a bit upsetting, and that's ultimately what holds the game back from a perfect rating in my opinion. If there is anything to improve going forward, that might be it.

Anyway. It's a fun game overall, and I'm enjoying it so far.

Edit: Bumping my score up to 10. More people were on in the evening, more people were talking in the evening, and it was all around just more fun that way. I've already established my character's personality and backstory and I'm holding to it!

If you want a high risk pvp game like Rust or Ark where getting killed, raided and eventually wiped is 100% expected and you love the thrill of trying to be alpha tribe before you get wiped, this game is not for you.

If you want a traditional fallout game where you interact with interesting NPCs and make thoughtful choices, this game isn't for you either.

So who is this game for and why the hell did I give it a 10? If you want a mix between DayZ and Mist this game is for you. It's honestly perfect for me and my boyfriend. I LOVE games like Rust and Ark, but he wont play them with me because he hates putting so much time and effort into something only to get raided in the end. I have little interest in a co-op Fallout 4 because who's choices would matter?

This game is seriously awesome, it combines sandbox elements with a really rich story. It's just a different type of story. You emerge from vault 76 only 25 years after the war. The government filled vault 76 and other early release vaults with the best and brightest the USA had to offer because we're the ones that have to rebuild and shape the world for the future vaults. After being released you interact with a few robots that point you in a direction and you go. You find out that people who weren't able to secure safety in a vault did survive after the bombs dropped, you find their camps, diaries and holotapes talking about everything from dangerous radiation levels in the water to mutated monsters, plagues and maybe even aliens (not sure if that's actually a thing or just a crazy person rambling). The tapes are awesome because you can listen to them while rummaging around collecting stuff.

You try to drink the water and you get rads, you try to eat the food and you get rads. You try to collect the water to boil it, and you still get rads but less so. They don't cure over time, and Radaway is sparce and you can't craft it (at least at first, not sure if you can later). You start listening to these tapes and the survivors testing the water and trying to figure out how to purify it and you have to pick up where they left off if you hope to survive long term. That's the reality of being the first ones out of a vault, no town to buy purified water in. You have to figure out how to purify it so there can be towns and factions in the future.... as well as looking into super mutant threats, plagues, aliens and other crazy rumors that could end human life as we know it. Just because the story doesn't handhold you or tell you how awesome and invaluable your character is every 15 minutes doesn't mean there isn't a rich story for you to uncover on your own.

Obviously there's monster hunting, treasure maps, air drops, crafting, perks and skills and other cool stuff. You can build a camp but it logs out with you for the night so you can only get raided while online (even then you have a chest that only you can access, additional storage people can loot though). You know what though, that's a nice change of pace. It's a game, I can't be on 24/7. The community actually seems nice, people are intentionally leaving things in lootable chests to help others along. Don't get me wrong I LOVE games like Ark and Rust, I've got 600+ hours in each on official servers... but I also like to be able to sleep easy when I log out and I like playing games with my boyfriend so this is fun in it's own right and the first game of it's kind.

I also love a deeply rich story, I love the previous fallout games. I've played through the Mass Effect Trilogy so many times it's unreal. I don't need to become leader of every guild and have NPCs stare at me in awe though. I don't always need to be the center of the universe, sometimes it's cool to just be a part of it and make it what you will.

TLDR; if you want Fallout 5 Co-Op, this is not for you. If you want DayZ, this is not for you. If you want something in the middle of those that you can convince your PvP shy friends and family to play, this is perfect for you.

The company doesn't owe you anything. If this was a singleplayer game 90% of these negative reviews would be desperately defending the game against any and all complaints, including the bugs. The game still looks fine, graphics, believe it or not, do not make a game good or bad. I much prefer the art style argument for looks, and Fallout 76 has strong art direction and a good style. The big root of all of these negative reviews is that the company did something the fanboys didn't like, and they all think that if they whine enough it will make the company feel bad or change. Its a company, and it owes you nothing. I have been a fan of Bethesda since i was 8 years old, and I personally quite like this game, it is a cozy Bethesda title with none of the problems with bad writing that have plagued their last few games, namely Fallout 4 and Skyrim, with the majority of quests I have done thus far in 25 hours of BETA and the last two days of the released product being well written and delivering the story well. There isn't any ludo-narrative dissonance like plagued Fallout 4, and the lack of NPCs is a good thing, as Fallout 4s NPCs were boring and forgettable and, personally, I would rather have nothing than something actively detrimental to my experience with the game the way that dealing with Preston Garvey was. This is a Spinoff game, not Fallout 5. Remember that Fallout has had spinoffs before, and if Brotherhood of Steel on the Xbox couldn't kill the franchise when it was in a vulnerable state, then Fallout 76 is not going to kill it when it is insanely popular. It sickens me to see so many fans of Bethesda's games trashing their newest one simply because it is different. Do you want 15 more Skyrim Rereleases? Because this is how you get the company to never try anything new again, you stupid fanboys you. Expand

The graphics are better than anything bethesda has released to date, and the atmosphere and lighting is sublime. And to top that off i am running game at full 4k res on ultra settings at over 100fps. The only complaint would be I hate field of view and there is no option to turn it off, that being said it is well implamented and anoys me less than most other games. Will this game be for everyone no probably not and if you go into it expecting it to be another fallout in the series than you wont like it, but if you go into it knowing its not trying to be its just trying to be a different type of game in the fallout world you should really enjoy it. Grieving is none-existent right now.

People who are used to the Fallout singleplayer games might have problems with this title though. The only reason for this is, that there are no human npcs. All humans are players. If you don't embrace that it might feel "empty". Thats an illusion though. Because of people being upset about it, it might have been a bad decision by Bethesda to do it like that, but the game is amazing. A real singleplayer game done in multiplayer and its full of content. Just no babbling human skinned NPCs, but its still story rich and huge, full of stuff to do.

I'll start quite simple. I love this game, I love the Fallout series and I love what Bethesda do. If you could sum up Bethesda in one word, I would use "ambitious". People have wanted multiplayer Bethesda games for a long time. This is the first time we've got one (Yes I am aware of ESO, I played it, but that's made by Zenimax and is barely faithful to the Elder Scrolls world). BethesdaI'll start quite simple. Bethesda have created a beautiful and atmospheric world that we can explore together, and they plan to keep adding to it for FREE. The microtransactions are cosmetic only and OPTIONAL.

A lot of people are complaining about the survival aspects. It was ADVERTISED as being more about survival than previous games. If people didn't pay attention to that well that's their problem.

People also complain about the lack of human NPCs. Yes it can be a bit jarring coming from games where people are everywhere you look, but we're overlooking one key fact. Fallout 76 is chronologically the earliest Fallout game to date. A lot of the Vaults from which people appeared to settle the wasteland are still sealed. It makes sense that there aren't any people about. They survived on the surface in a hostile world for a while, but radiation and other problems have taken their toll. Bethesda have said they will update the game supposedly "forever". Who's to say we won't start seeing NPCs appear as time goes on, as Vault Dwellers begin to settle the wasteland. This game will live or die on its player base. It's up to US to rebuild. The dwellers of Vault 76 are the first to emerge.

The crafting and camp system for me are fantastic, letting us claim our own corner of Appalachia. If you enjoy survival, enjoy roleplaying or just enjoy shooting things in the face, this game has something for you. Don't let the whining of people who didn't bother to research what they were buying put you off this amazing game.

There are also a bunch of factions that you can join in this game and receive some really cool gear from, eventually Bethesda will add faction based PVP as well. Speaking of adding new things, Bethesda has already said they will continue to add more content into the game. All DLCs are said to be free content, and that is a very good thing for this game. ITS AN ONLINE GAME.. wake up.. no one listens or reads lore on online games.
I played for hours on end alone and was amazing, then played with friends and had a blast.

Get off your hate wagon, no one cares.

Read through the negative reviews. Most of them are useless and don't give a fair shake to the game. Mainly 0's and 1's given by angry fans who didn't get exactly what they wanted. I think that the multiplayer experience is well reasoned and well implemented aside from a few minor gripes about balance and quality of life.

This is not an MMO and this is not purely a Co-op either, it is more unique than that and I applaud Bethesda for taking the time and having the courage to make something truly unique. That being said, this game is everything that I ever wanted in a multiplayer fallout game and more. The experience of seeing other players, meeting to trade, to fight, and to team up is really a fantastic experience. It adds a new aspect to the world that never existed before by providing a novel feeling of vulnerability that past games just could not give. The player character is no longer a god, they are a denizen of the world and to thrive, they might sometimes have to work together with or fight against other players.

Many have criticized the world for being "empty", but I think that is a matter of perspective really. Bethesda seems to go out of their way to give that feeling of the world being empty. Everyone, every living person, is dead. Some were alive days before you got there, but they are dead now. You can see their faces and hear their voices on holotapes, get a sense of their personalities and lives, but they are gone. Not a single person still lives when you arrive. This seems to build a tension and an expectation of the possibility that perhaps somewhere, someone could still be alive but they never are. This is actually really cool. When people say the world is empty, they really should be sure to say that this does not mean that there is a lack of content. The world is painstakingly crafted and full to the brim with small details, lore, and points of interest. It is probably the most dense map I have ever experienced in a Fallout game, or even in any game. I am glad, in a way, that there aren't obnoxious, boring NPCs walking around to ruin the atmosphere when they repeat the same 3 lines over and over and over again.

So far, the game has been more than worth the money and Bethesda has great plans for the game. This is a living game that will grow and change with time. Vaults will be opening and faction operations are going to begin soon. I am very excited to seen where the future takes me with this game and I hope that other people can see that in this game as well.

Great game by a great studio. Do not listen to the other reviews. They are haters who have never played the game or just want to hate on it for no reason. Granted the game play can be lonely but hey.. its a fallout game. You can also find players at any time and chat with them on voice chat. Having a pretty great time so far. The hate seems a little bit too extreme. I think mostly people came expecting this to be a typical fallout game. I played for about 5 hours yesterday with 4 good friends, and we all had a fantastic time. I mean probably the most fun I have had in a long time with a game. You just need to range out, and roll with your buddies.

This game has been an absolute blast to play, solo or with friends. The graphics are nice and the game runs fairly smoothly. My PC specs are below minimum requirements and I still get smooth game play. There not being human npcs didn't actually bother me too much, I got used to it very quickly, and it in my opinion doesn't effect the game play at all. I like the Mr. Handys any way, though there are a bit too many holo tapes. The pvp is very fair though as not everyone wants to kill people, if you want to do that, go play rust. In this game you can mind your own business and do whatever you want without really having to worry about other players. If some players are trying to kill you, all you have to do is either not fight back, and if they kill you, they get a bounty or leave that server and join another server. Base building is nice and balanced, you can't place your camp everywhere as it takes a decent amount of caps. Again this game does not deserve the amount of hate its getting just because its not fallout 5 and it multiplayer. Though I don't get what people mean by the game is unfinished or the graphics are bad, I don't know what utopia future they are living in, but the graphics for the game are nice. The quests of the game are also pretty cool as almost every location you visit has something with it, either you have to do a quest associated with it and other buildings, but they aren't each very similar. Each of them feel very unique and cool. You have quests where you go across the map, or quests that link to other quests even. Most of the people I'm assuming came to this game with a negative opinion in mind even though they had not yet played the game. I mean its almost like a negativity bias with what these people are doing. They come to the game with negative opinions and they block out all good things about the game with the things that aren't so great. They saw that the game was multiplayer, or how there are no human npcs, and heard that someone else say that they think the game will be bad, who heard from another person that the game will be bad and the chain of negativity continues. I know this game doesn't exactly deserve a 10, but I'm going to give it that just so people don't continue this negative bias towards the game without even playing the game and never fully experienced what the game holds. Finally a chance to get away from them all. Actually, they're all dead, but you can play their memories as holo-tapes all you want. Many of the post apocalypse lives recorded are great.

Kill Super Mutants with a friend! Always fun.

PvP world with a very large degree of co-operation and very little actual grief. In fact, those who try to grief generally get bored very fast. If they don't there's always the option to jump to a new server. It doesn't take any time at all and you're in the same place when you land in the new server. Unless you've friended them they can't chase you across servers.

Did I mention a massive world with a ton of content?

There are other humans in the game! If that's not your thing, then you'll probably fit in with about half of them anyway. Most people on any server are exploring the story line on their own. It is fun to bump into people casually, but the game is a lot more fun if you're exploring with a group you meet up with regularly. I guess I hear a lot of people complain about this, but as far as I can tell it's only a negative if you're looking for something to complain about.

    Cons:
Pretty ridiculously easy. Although if you want a challenge, you can always restrict yourself to pistols and avoid the power armor. You could even ramp it up by not wearing any armor at all and going without stimpacks. Still though, it would be fun to have an uber-hard server where the people who hang really invested the time to navigate the world with care.

I guess if you love NPCs, you're out of luck. Try the local walmart, they hang out there in droves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay first sorry for my bad english but after reading so many negative hate critic on this game i really had to write my sight of view about Fallout 76. As a Fallout Fan wich played all of the Games of the Series i can say Fallout 76 is a nice Game with a fresh concept.

So People calling Rate 10 Reviews here as paid or Fake? Try to do so with mine. I can say 100% im writing this on my free will and dont get paid. Im just a Guy that keeps its distance to have a clear view. But what i can say the many negative Reviews here are just angry that they didnt inform themselve much before buying the Game or dont even have the game and just jump on the hate Train because all they can do is spread nonsense and hate. The Number of negative Reviews here you can easily ignore 3/4 of them because they are no helpfull at all and just trying to make the game look bad over here at Metacritic.

People complain about an empty World and no NPC interaction in Fallout 76?
Sorry Folks but Bethesda already stated that "WE the Players" are the ones to be interacted with each other and take place of the NPC in the Game. If you cant interact social with other Players than Fallout 76 isnt a Game for you.

    Performance?
The Performance is okay for the Engine and its getting optimized everytime. Have patience instead of rambling around....i can play the Game without any Issue on Medium Settings...

All in all, i Enjoy playing the Game, seeing the fate of different NPC that died trying to keep West Virginia a.k.a. Apalachia a safe place until the Vault 76 People comes out. Its a great Enviroment Storytelling wich makes me many times sad about how the people there tried their best but failed to keep themselve alive. Some even knew that this could happen and prepared everything possible for others to come and take their Places.

So all over here: Dont think about Fallout 76 as a RPG in its normal Fashion Way, its a more SOCIAL Sandbox with much Enviromental Storytelling, no interactable NPC Humans (only Robots)

YOU as a PLAYER take the Role of a interactable "NPC" if you can socialize...many cant...thats why People here are just mad that Fallout 76 doesnt fit in for them....

It is a shame that Fallout 76 is currently being bashed by bandwagon fanboys. First, let us get something straight. But, they are merely games that are setIt is a shame that Fallout 76 is currently being bashed by bandwagon fanboys. First, let us get something straight. You have not played Fallout from the beginning if the first Fallout game you played was 3. There are three Fallout entries before that. Second, Fallout 3 and after are not true representations of what Fallout was. They are great games. But, they are merely games that are set in the Fallout universe. Third, stop basing reviews solely on what you expected because of your experience with Fallout games since 3.

Ok, there is no linear story that holds your hand and tells you were to go. You're given a world and told, "Go, Play." If you need a linear story that gives you the sense of "I got to the end, I'm a badass!", this game is not for you. If, like me, start up all Bethesda games and say, "Screw the story imma do what I want!", you will enjoy this game.

The game is beautiful. People who say the graphics are terrible are full of it and may just need to consider upgrading their rigs or configuring it properly. There are some bugs, yes, but that is to be expected. If you really want a simulated experience of living in the forest without any glitches, stop playing video games so much and go camping. I've read about people complaining the blur effect. Let me ask you, is your peripheral HD quality? No, you have to actually look at something to see it clearly...and guess what happens in 76 when you have your cursor on something.

The fact that you get the majority of the information about the world through documents and terminals is a great idea. Why? Well because you're in a post apocalyptic world and most people are dead. Did you expect to come out of the ground and it be Disney World out there? It should be worse than the dark ages. Come on, it's going to be lonely.

And that brings me to the amount of players. I like that it is not like Elder Scrolls Online and that it is not a king of the hill game made by the player base. Low play count on servers means that it still feels like a solo wander through the waste if you want it to. But you can hit up friends or make new friends to help you with the adventure that you make. I highly suggest trying the game by grouping with a friend or two and say, "Hey, let's go...um...there." and see what you just come across on the way. It's great.

In the end I believe this is a great game and the majority of bad reviews should be taken with a grain of salt because most of it is written by overly critical gamers who are looking for the flaws because it's not the same as the 3d Fallout's that have come out prior. Like I said, if you need your hand held in a game and pointed in a direction, this game is not for you at all. If you enjoy finding your own path and exploring just to have a good time, you will enjoy this very much.

The sense of desolation is good because of the scarce presence of human persons.

I love to play with friends because it was just what I wanted from the time after the release of Skyrim: a classic RPG Bethesda playable cooperatively.

With all the possibilities to buy this game at a reduced price you risk falling into the ridicule by giving 0-3 as a vote. It has solid gameplay, a well-functioning multiplayer and the game involves.

Clearly like all the games the first phase presents bugs and lack of optimizations. Not to mention that, despite the micro-transaction system, the importance is not felt at all and only those graphic skins that can be purchased can be obtained simply by completing objectives: daily, weekly and various.

It is clear that who played the B.E.T.A., which, as you may have guessed, is a beta, can not complain about the bugs or problems encountered or the day-one patch. This is exactly what the beta needed, to test the game and, therefore, those who criticized this version of the game should withdraw the review and evaluate the full game.

The complete game has problems, but they do not preclude playability and, above all with performing PCs, the problems are much smaller. Solution for those with less performing PCs? Lower the graphics. Why yes, the graphics look like Fallout 4, but it's not, it's better, maybe we expected more, but it's better.

So whoever does not have the game, or just played the beta, or is only here to bury the title goes away.

I played Fallout 4 twice the reason being I started with that installment of the series and the second time around was playing it understanding all the tools and ways to achieve victory using my own creativity. Fallout 76 follows suit but though there are many similarities between the games you have to use a different gaming strategy to get the most out of it. The first 10 levels can be very tough and most are tempted to quit, not enough water, food, and decent guns and ammo. You need a strategy, a creative one and I like that about the game. When you make a camp remember to not leave it unattended because some of the players have taken on the role of a Raider. I overcome this by keeping a small camp with the bare essentials and quickly packing it in its theft proof case before I leave, so in a sense, there are still Raiders in this game but they are players like you but with a different agenda. I think that in a way this makes it more real life don't invite strangers into your home kind of common sense.

I don't wear the same clothes every day, treat this game like a new outfit and you'll enjoy it very much.

The graphics are definitely not bad as some reviewers would claim. the game looks gorgeous with this beautiful atmosphere all around it.
The Gameplay is fun with a survival system with deteriorating hunger and thirst and the constant search for materials to craft armor and weapons, Gunplay is good with vats making a return.

Fallout 76 is Fallout, and it isn't Fallout at the same time. And for all the hype around the multiplayer, both friend and foe, it seems inconsequential most of the time. Just passer-bys on the street more often than not, it's there but it doesn't matter. It's a fun game, but I don't think it's going to be a timeless classic I return to time and time again years from now once I feel I've had enough.

It's ironic in that a game that was advertised as having no NPCs, Bethesda has managed to make characters I care about and want to see more from, whereas in their other titles, I get fed up with their shallow writing and context-free voice acting.

It's also run cleaner than any other Bethesda title at launch. While the beta had some hiccups, it's a far cry from the constant missing textures of Fallout 3, the crashes to desktop of Fallout 4, and the regular framerate drops of Skyrim.

I also appreciate that while they could have pursued a system that encouraged "whales," the play experience for someone who just bought the base game is as complete as someone who buys every cosmetic microtransaction. Also so far, I've been able to earn every microtransaction I thought was interesting.

It's also the only Bethesda Fallout title that I feel really understood the core of what made the Interplay/Black Isle Fallouts work politically. It's very charged, with strong statements about the nature of the world.

Now i know people have a right to their own opinion, to what they believe is the best game, or to make it the best game, or a great game, and i will never deny anyone their right to do so.

But this is Fallout, this is the series that i love the most, more than any other game franchise around. It hurts to see people so hateful, so angry, so willing to throw negative reviews for such spiteful reasons. This happened for Fallout 4 as well, and fans did this for New Vegas, and for Fallout 3. Heck some did it for Fallout Tactics, even Fallout 2 being such purists.

So where does it stop? When does this Fallout game hating end? I like the game, yes, but there are aspects that drive me crazy enough that i would have given it a zero too, yes. But you know what makes me different? Do you know why i have no love for Todd Howard or Bethesda, and how he keeps throwing out games that are not ready, or that each game tends to break some aspect of lore until it is explained and fixed, or why they choose the choices they did for a game, even if it did piss so many people off?

I'm here to simply have fun playing Fallout, if i have fun, if i enjoy playing, I'll keep coming back, if not, then I'll come back eventually when I'm bored, but i just want to play. Not want the latest graphic engine, the best immersive NPC's, the perfect gaming experience, even the perfect match with lore, i just want to play! That i can play with other players now, cool, that they are working on patching the game, good, no game is perfect at launch, no matter how many years it is taken. I just want to play, not hear people, or see people in the case of my video feeds and channels, endlessly complain and complain and complain. Play it or don't, have fun or don't, If you cannot figure out the story, or why the only NPC's (and yes, there are NPC's) are there, it's not my place to explain it.

So either just play, and have fun, and let those of us who do like it have fun, or just calm down, say your peace, and go, for if you cannot say anything constructive with your criticism, then do not say anything at all, cause personally, I'm tired of this toxic fan base.

Instead of guiding you on the path to rebuilding the world after nuclear armageddon they have given every player the freedom to explore the world at his/her own pace. I truly believe Fallout 76 is a magnificent concept, being able to interact with others while exploring the glowing mysteries of Appalachia. NPCs from previous Fallout games were really well done and helped with immersion to a certain extent but having such a big map populated just with AI is dull for a 2018 game, especially Fallout. With Fallout 76, the story is scattered around the map for players to piece together, just like a puzzle. I think this sort of challenge is great but it certainly isn't as appealing to everyone that played previous Fallout games, especially Fallout 4. I believe that one of the most important aspects of this game is that the current concept caters mostly to hardcore fans due to the amount of planning, strategy and patience one must have in order to succeed.
The online world of Fallout has a huge amount of potential for diversification, which I am really looking forward to.
The Fallout 76 in game community is amazing and I can genuinely say that I've never seen before people that are so helpful even though they don't have anything to gain. Sure, there are a few griefers but that is to be expected from an online game with such a big fan base.
In terms of gameplay I must say that the graphics have definitely improved since Fallout 4 but there are quite a few glitches and bugs which I hope will be fixed in the future. Sometimes there are also performance issues such as freezes and crashes but they don't happen as often as they did during B.E.T.A.
Overall I can say that I love the new approach Bethesda has taken with Fallout and even though it might take a little while for everything to be the way the devs want to, I'm sure the journey ahead is going to be epic. Kudos Bethesda!

Beautiful graphics, fantastic atmosphere, exploration and death around every corner, building and sharing a camp with your friends that has to be defended! A lot of negative reviews are from people who go into this game thinking it is Fallout 5. It is the Fallout universe, but online. All of your typical badass enemies are there from the previous games, super mutants, deathclaws, etc. But there are literally hundreds more different enemies on this game from dangerous wildlife to the strange like Mothman. Also as it is online Bethesda are planning to continue to support the game with updates and extra DLC that is totally free. So it can only get better. But you either love it or hate it. If you like atmosphere, shooting bad guys, survival all alongside your friends in a game, then this is a game for you! .. and yes I am actually enjoying it more than Fallout 4 because I can now play Fallout with my friends instead of being on my own surrounded by artificial characters! Yes, it has bugs. Every damn game since the original Fallout has had issues. I won't argue that point as it has been proven time and again that every Fallout has had some serious technical flaws.
My experience with Fallout 76 however has been overall an amazing experience that keeps me coming back to explore more and more of the enormous map of Appalachia. I've definitely experienced my share of bugs: 1 CTD, 1 infinite loading screen, 2 instances of taking damage from no visible source, multiple instances of crafting menus failing to load when interacting with workbenches, etc.
The fact that the game keeps me coming back for more -despite these bugs- is a testament to just how much fun it is to play. Even better is the fact that BGS will be actively supporting the game with patches and updated content.
Which brings me to the micro-transaction issue. I don't see one in this game. All optional purchases are purely cosmetic and have zero effect on game-play aside from letting you flaunt your style as you explore. You don't even have to spend actual money on the items as you earn plenty of Atoms (the in-game premium currency) from achievements as you play (including daily challenges).
Speaking of playing, the new VATS feels -to me- like the best iteration yet. It reminds of the turn-based days of Fallout where you didn't actually aim at your targets in an FPS fashion but would instead rely on VATS to give you a general percentage to hit your opponent (with the option of targeting specific body parts with a high AP cost - much like how in FO76 you get a general aim-assisted chance to hit the body until you invest in the proper perks to be able to target individual body parts). I honestly didn't rely on VATS all that much Fallout 3, 4, or New Vegas as it was simple enough to hit the enemy without it. But the somewhat clunky aiming in FO76 (thanks to serve connections and multiple players all causing some lag) makes the new VATS all the more useful for landing that one critical shot on a quick enemy that's getting wayyyyy too close.
Enemies, by the way, that are just as varied and interesting as the previous installments (with a few new wonderful cryptid oddities mixed in!). Oh and the NPCs are still there! Yes, many of them are actually dead and rotting corpses, but you'll still find some living characters that are just as fun to meet (even if you can't have an actual conversation with them).
Visually, the game is a definite upgrade from Fallout 4 (yeah, I think it's pretty and the god rays actually work now, fight me). You'll notice a bit more detail in all the armors and items and enemies (though it's still not as high res as I'd like, i'm okay with it as is.) and the sounds you hear from every shot and grunt and piece of junk are very pleasing.
To those worried about griefers - good news! There's next to none of it! At least I haven't experienced any in the ~80 hours of play time I've logged. Plenty of friendly interactions with other players teaming up, trading, guiding new players, and even setting up fully equipped C.A.M.P.s for everyone to use!
As for the story of the game, well, I haven't completed it so I can't say all that much except that the bits that I've gone through have been excellent.
Honestly, this game is 100% worth giving try. Don't let all the loud detractors get you down on what is honestly a very fun experience.

Ignore the hate for this game, Bethesda Game Studios went too mainstream with Fallout 4 and now the people hating don't know what Fallout is anymore. It's an amazing game. I'm not a fanboy. Im just a guy that enjoys the heck out of this game.

I have played 100+ and have seen nothing that could cause this much hate and toxicity for a game. The community is what is bad, not the game.

The toxic shaming on this game is ridiculous. The game has its bugs but overall the game is amazing for exploring and playing with your friends. People are comparing this to a single player game without understandig the random encounters and its not guided. If I had to compare it to a game it would be like boarder lands but without the rails.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
