Boring. Bland. Grindy. I can't remember the last time I gave up on an RPG, but this one was a waste of time & money. Execution & polish were spot on, but unfortunately it's the same hackneyed story delivered in an extremely grindy MMO fashion. It has no heart, no soul.

    Also, boring.

The graphics of DAI are great for the most part so good job with that. The story is so so! Not too good and not to bad, And the combat has less abilities than in previous titles which sucks. Why couln't you take the strategic combat of Dragon Age Origins, improve the Graphics, make it open world, change the story and add some awesome combat music and that's it. Dragon age 2.5. This is another action game with hints of RPG. Equipment is limited ala.DA2. Class skill trees (MORE limited than DA2). No healing skills, just "barriers". Take advantage of the EA great game guarantee and get your money back so that Bioware stops making these sorry excuses for RPGs.

This game is seriously flawed. Considering the price tag, I'm having a serious case of buyer's remorse. Here are my specific issues with the game:

Controls. The controls are awkward and unintuitive. When you click on a target you don't move to it automatically, you have to "drive" to it. It's difficult to tell what you are attacking, if anything. Frustrating is NOT fun.

Gathering. An annoying, distracting waste of time. "Let me take a short break from rushing to save the world to go off in a different direction to scrounge for elfroot.". You are CONSTANTLY scrounging for crafting materials. It's BORING and pointless. What a stupid design decision.

Search. In order to search for loot and gathering materials you need to press the "V" key to highlight the goodies in your immediate area. So you are constantly spamming the V key. Constantly. Seriously, it's like a manual SONAR that will quickly make your finger start cramping. Whatever designer thought that was a good idea should be working as a greeter at Walmart.

Inventory. The inventory interface is useless. There's a reason most RPG inventories look similar - because they work. EA went for something different here...and in this case different is definitely not better. How is it possible to make an annoying inventory interface??? EA has somehow managed.

Cursor. The cursor is so small that it is easily lost on the screen.

Seriously, who playtested this thing??? These are really basic problems.

Is there ANYTHING good about this game? Sure, the graphics look good, character creation is..."thorough" is the only word that comes to mind...and at least on my PC the installation was easy and the game runs smoothly.

    Keywords: Boring, frustrating, flawed.

I really do wish that I hadn't spent my money on this, and I would recommend that you not spend yours.

I couldnt continue after about 5 hours of playing DAI. I looked forward to a deep and awesome RPG with excellent combat and exploration. All i got was a story and nothing else. Let me explain what i mean.

First thing i noticed was that DAI has no strafe (side stepping) and it made me confused since its a mechanic that is in 99% of all games on PC. Without it you cant smoothly navigate around objects and in combat. Without it you have to constantly turn your whole body. This might not be the biggest issue when just running around, although it is very annoying since strafing makes it so much better, but when it comes to combat there is a real issue with this. When you fight an enemy and another one comes on your side you cant just strafe sideways to not get hit by the one on your side. You have to TURN away from the enemies in order to move which will leave your back open for abuse, and so you take a hit or two in your back as you turn away from the fight just to reposition yourself to get away from the second attacker. Amazingly stupid and can only be explained with that DAI is a console game since they often dont have strafe. On PC this makes no sense whatsover since combat is massively crappier without it.

The second issue with combat is that none of the characters can not move while fighting. This is the next big mistake Bioware made. Combat is seriously lacking in smoothness and skillful feeling which is something that SHOULD be in RPG's. Especially action RPG's like this. This means that when you for example fight with 2H weapons you move slow and you keep stopping as you hit while the enemies are moving around. Super annoying and plain boring. For some reason you also move much slower then you hold your weapon in your hand compared to when its on your back... Like the weapon got heavier for some unrealistic reason when its in your hands. 50kg does not magically turn into 200kg depending on if its on your back or front of the body. So the result is that combat feels slow and clunky. Clunky because you cant strafe. Only turn your whole body all the time you want to move sideways. And the result as mentioned above is that you get hit when you shouldnt be.

Another thing about combat is that you dont really notice when you kill enemies. Bioware didnt do what most developers do and make that last kill-hit be felt and heared. No louder sound or some visuals when enemies die but instead just their tiny health bar that you often cant see if the enemy is dead or if its super tiny bit of health left. It makes it feel very unsatisfying when fighting. It also has you very often beating on a dead enemy in vain when you could have moved on and dealt with the rest of them. Just another annoyance to combat.

Wjhen it comes to exploring - there is no exploring in this game. The game is big, true, but for some reason Bioware wants to cater to the least hardcore players (maybe mothers and grandmothers?) and flat out mark EVERYTHING on your map. Plus on the ground you have large blue glowing pillars showing you where to go. So you dont have to think at all when moving in the world. Just see the minimap or large map for markers and run there. When you have line of sight to the point you need to go to you see glowing pillars marking it and you see them from a far. On top of this you also have a button to press to find loot/plants/ore/anything useful around you without having to actually look and explore. So while you move you spam this button constantly and if there is a chest or a plant etc nearby it will make a sound and highlight the object (plus have a ping in the minimap). So no exploring whatsoever except for looking at the scenery. Again, no idea who was lead designer here, but that person shouldnt work on RPG's. Childrens games perhaps, but not epic RPG's. The hand holding meter is off the chart.

The last thing regarding annoyances is that objects do not fade to invisible when they get between you and the camera. Good luck fighting in forests (which you do often). Trees will take up the whole screen and you see nothing while fighting or looking for things. Amazing that developers played the game and said "yep, this is great. Cant see crap but who cares".

So finally, the hand holding, bad exploration and the slow/clunky movement/combat mechanics in DAI destroys that true epic RPG feeling of being fighting heroes out on grand quests exploring lands and secrets. It just feels like a casual console hand holding fest with bad annoying mechanics thrown in. The story im sure is good. The graphics and sounds are great plus the crafting is nice. However, if Bioware just went more towards their first Dragon Age (Origins) and expanded on that, this would be epic. Sadly Dragon Age inquisition isnt it. Casuals who play very little will perhaps be happy, but those that want epic adventures with great combat will be disapointed.

And here is the funny part they failed at both and why this game is poorly ranked DO2 was a bad game for me but DO inquistion is a bad game for all.
Still you can probably stand it if you like DO2 its not that bad as a first person game but if you want to pause and use tactical mode its like pulling teeth.
Fighting through a RPG like DO inq takes a lot of time if you cant stand the fighting it would be better to watch someone play trough it on youtube.
If something isn't broken don't fix it all they needed to do was remake DO and everyone and their grandma would have thrown money at them but they want the console gamers also and in trying to please everyone they end up making a frankenstein that nobody can love.
The tactical fight mode makes me want to cry you just cant see anything such a silly basic error that you viewpoint is to low down to be able to see anything even at the highest option open for you, i assume they wanted it to look better or someting but it makes it a nightmare to play.

I mean the game has absolutely no role-playing qualities about it whatsoever. The character system and combat are stunningly even more dumbed down than DA2 which I didn't know was possible. You don't even get to roll your own starting stats anymore and your character is locked into two to three skill trees that you pretty much just mindlessly grab abilities from because they all do the same damn thing.

Do you love 3rd person party-based action games that try to incorporate **** ledge-jumping mechanics but fail miserably every time? This one is for you. Or how about mindlessly holding down the attack button until all of the enemies are dead regardless of your class? The tactics menu has been gutted so badly there's no reason to open it, ever. That wouldn't be THAT bad since I didn't use it that much in DA:O but it is paired with the fact that your party has the worst AI they could have possibly given it. It's almost like it was an afterthought. It doesn't help to manually give each character orders either (which would be mind numbingly boring in most encounters). Tell your mage to hang back and cast a spell and as soon as you switch to another character he'll run into melee range of whatever he was attacking like a god damn moron.

I was just fighting a dragon 3 levels below me and lost the fight because my two tanks were just standing next to my rogue with their thumbs up their asses while it attacked them, no matter how many times I ordered them to attack. They'd run up, finish their attack, and then stand still. **** brilliant, Bioware.

Please don't make another Dragon Age. We've been through enough.

The controls with a mouse and keyboard are terrible, and combined with a poor camera view even just moving to where you want to go feels chore. The game stutters a lot even though I have turned the graphics down way below the automatic 'optimised' settings - in fact the benchmark shows minimum frame rates dropping to single figures whether I set everything to max or drop everything to low in graphics settings.

I haven't completed the game yet but the story so far is boring, the gameplay is tedious, the combat doesn't have any real strategy.

Considering what an awesome game the original Dragon Age was, I can't understand how the devs have ended up releasing something as bad as this. DA2 and DA:O were decent sequels but this is terrible - Bioware need to take a step back and think about what makes a game enjoyable.

Second: the game lacks any form of challenge. It's too easy. I've played the game on hard and I didn't need to change characters at all and tactics are completely useless.

Third: the story. Both the story and the characters are mediocre and cliched. None of the characters are memorable which is sad because Origins had an amazing set of characters.

It feels like the developers packed in as many concepts and areas and quest lines as possible to create a big world, but they ended up with a boring, derivative experience that lacks the wonder and character of Skyrim and some of Bioware's earlier games. I know that the combat is equally disappointing, but I could get over that if they story, characters, and world were immersive, but I have not found them engaging thus far.

At my fourth attempt, I was finally able to complete my character, only to be met with choppy graphics, terrible camera controls, and horrible game-play with mouse and keyboard.
Still, I tried to give it a shot, but after having another 2 crashes, an agonizing battle with the tutorial boss, where I was fighting more against the camera then the boss itself, I went and got my refund.

    Bottom-line:

Graphics: choppy with a lot of stuttering, especially during cutscenes. Low and Medium models give you ugly and shiny hair.

Game-play: Made to be played with a joystick. You need to keep clicking to attack, and if your target moves, good luck with that. Clicking on the ground to move? Nope. Trying to close that rift located 5 meters of the ground? No way, you can't even see it, with that annoying camera. The menus are a mess.

I can't comment on the storyline and the open world, because all these issues made the game unplayable to me.

    Utterly disappointed.

I'm playing on PC, which should be the native platform for any true RPG. The most significant issue is the control scheme, which is completely broken. Awful. I honestly can't believe they released the game in this state - it's unplayable and unenjoyable.

I'm about 10 hours in, and honestly can't play anymore - it's that bad. Other issues - the skill trees are weak and derivative, The menu system involves a million clicks and nothing works like you'd expect. The inventory system - don't even get me started. And my favorite - having to repeatedly hit 'V' (or whatever you bind to) in order to send out sonar pings for loot. Seriously? Who in the world thought that this mechanic would add pleasure to the game?

I'm not an "EA ruined Bioware" hater, but I have to think after seeing this game that they either lost some serious talent in the acquisition, or EA is forcing the studio to sacrifice quality for profits. In either case, the current product is unacceptable and should not have been released. A post-release patch - if one ever comes - isn't enough to forgive the really poor product that they've aired.

If you're thinking about buying this game, forget the critics' reviews - look at the user scores. And ask yourself if you're willing to take the approximately 50/50 risk of loving or absolutely hating this game (at the time of writing, 389 positive reviews, and 339 negative - not the mark of a stellar game, for sure).

After 12 hours I couldn't play anymore. When I heard about Inquisition I said "there's no way it can be worse than DA2 so it will be fine." Sadly I was wrong. I'd much rather player DA2 than this mess of a game. Bioware is officially dead and I will no longer buy their games. Expand

I just want to say first off that I am a big fan of the Dragon Age Universe. I have both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. I wasn't too found of DA2, but I did enjoy the story line. Now on to my review of DA:I.

I just want to say first off that I am a big fan of the Dragon Age Universe. I have both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. I wasn't too found of DA2, but I did enjoy the story line. Now on to my review of DA:I.

I have to agree with other critics and say this game has a feel of a single player MMO. This game feels like as if EA was working on an MMO game and then felt as if it wasn't going to sell because of games like Destiny and Witcher 3. So at a last minute they changed it to a Dragon Age game with the same characters. That is why I have a feeling there is no Warden in this game. Then they delayed it another year because they need to fix the kinks from the original format to make it work as a Dragon Age game.

Second part that supports my theory above is the fact PC keyboard and mouse support is awful. This game feels like it was ported from a console to PC instead of the other way around. I generally try to press F5 to quick save and it doesn't work.

My other beef with this game is the fact you can't distribute attribute points like the other games. Your best way to increase your attributes is your equipment. I have even found rare equipment that I can't use for another few levels. Which goes to my other beef is XP is so slow in this game compared to the other games.
Even carrying limited 8 potions is lame and when you run out, you run out. They said your health bar would increase slow after a battle, but wow talk about it is really, really slow.

My last beef with this game is the fact that there is no healing spells. There is a skill that lets you revive and heal them, but it is so far up the tree that it is hard to get to especially with low xp rewards you get. I have ran into a high dragon already in the game at level 4 and got killed. They say you have to use strategy and I had no choice to face them. Even if you ran they follow you till you are dead.

Fanboys can't fathom the fact that this game has it's flaws. All they seem to care is that the fact this game has good graphics and it's a Dragon Age game.

What makes me chuckle? These people giving 10s and immediately saying "How can these people rate it 0 after only a few hours/1 day of play?" When they themselves are giving it a 10. Dragon Age 2 was found out for Bioware/EA hiring a LOT of people in Russia and China to fudge metacritic scores, and it seems the same PR machine is attempting to work overtime again....but anyway, on with the review!.....

The fact is, DA3 is the progression of dumbing down games to the mass market, bad market research, and lazy game design. It has devolved from the tagline on the back of the Dragon Age Origins box (of which i have in front of me) that reads "The Dark Fantasy Epic" to what is now probably a cheesy parody of itself.

The Dragon Age franchise is so rich with lore from its first game, the fact that they went down the hilariously cliche "rifts open up in world, you're our only hope" storyline is both unimaginative, uninspiring, and a depressingly well-trodden path. You could have had a game that literally played out between the mages and templars without that added pointlessness, and had it be just as vast, epic and enthralling.

The PC version IS a terrible console port, and that is how you can tell the paid reviewers on this site from the actual real reviewers. The controls are messy, rushed, and ill thought out.

Its quests DO have a hideously grindy feeling MMO fetch quest nature about them. This was even highlighted in a PCGamer video as they played through it and mentioned it as a worry of theirs, but funnily enough, now their review has come out, they changed their tune to no quests feeling pointless. Funny how a final review in a paid magazine can change so differently from their preview, isnt it? Despite only 1 month passing inbetween.

It is sad that the gameworld looks so beautiful (which is what it does gain marks for), yet is filled up with all this filler. The gameworld could be more open, it does feel linear, but its real problem stems from trying to marry a WoW-esque hand holding experience to take your places and also wanting to be Skyrim at the same time. The two dont work well together.

Combat is very dull. One of my chief complaints about DA2 was the fact enemies respawned and just had more hitpoints as you changed the difficulty setting, instead of placing different monsters with/and/or different abilities. The same is true here. Bioware seem to care more about the story these days than actually producing a game.

The sad thing is, when the story then lets you down (and it doesnt entirely, but the dialogue does), and that was the leg you were standing on, it brings everything else crashing down with it.
The developers seem to think we're scared of reading more than 5 words to choose what we want to say, despite in Dragon Age Origins you having nearly a full sentence for each option. This becomes a big problem, because a lot of the time it means you end up with your character not saying what you thought you were going to say.

In a ROLEplaying game, that is hilariously bad, and extremely lazy.

    So to sum up -
    Cons :
    -Bad dialogue
    -Cliched medicore storyline
    -Mediocre Combat and controls
    -Badly ported
    -Pointless MMO filler questing
-EA China/Russia paid for metacritic reviews skewing the real reviewers.

    Pros
-Worth a punt when its been reduced to about £10 and you've nothing better to play
    -Beautiful looking scenary and landscaping
    -Dragon Age world/universe nostalgia.

I've figured it out. It took me several days, and roughly 39 hours of gameplay to finally know the best way to describe DA:I, as I was slightly unhappy with my previous reviews. DA:I is Pac-Man. I know what you're thinking: "Did he seriously just compare an action RPG, filled with quests, characters, and story, a game released late 2014, to Pac-Man?" Yes, I did. Think about it.

You are Pac-Man; the maze-like setting of Pac-Man represents the "open world" filled with mountains, fallen trees, boulders, lakes, and such that you have to go around; the ghosts represent enemies (which, if you're like me, you usually avoid because the loot and experience isn't worth fighting consta-respawning enemies for); the pellets represent the quests (going around collecting things for no particular reason other than it's a part of the game); the power pellets represent the few times you do want, or have, to fight; points are experience; fruit is loot; new stages are new areas with more challenging monsters; and last, but not least, the world feels dead with an enormous lack of NPC interaction. The major difference is that all of this is more than acceptable in Pac-Man.

But this is Dragon Age. This is BioWare. If I wanted to play Pac-Man, I would play Pac-Man. I want to play an RPG with all the charm that I love in previous BioWare games. I want to get quests from people who have an interesting story/reason for wanting you to do their not-collection quest. I want to go up to a dwarf named Worthy and tell him he has an ironic name because it's ****ing hilarious. I did not get what I want.
I wanted so badly to love this game. I don't have much money, so I can only buy a new game every so often, and against Shadows of Mordor, against Divinity: Original Sin, various other titles that look interesting and got really high user reviews, I put my money on a brand new, no price drop BioWare, my first love. I can't stand the fact that 10-raters are calling low-raters mainstream haters and whatnot in an attempt to devalue our opinion. No, I did not get this game to hate it. I do everything in my power to love the games I buy. I even managed to find something I greatly enjoyed about DA2 (The humor was amazing. Just amazing.), the first DA letdown. I can't find anything in this game. The quests, the characters, everything is so awful. Waste of money. Dragon Age: Disappointment.

Also, a note to another reviewer (and anyone who thinks like him/her), who compared reviewing a game with this much "content" *COUGH* after only 10 hours of play to reading 20 pages of a much longer book.... That comparison would work if the game actually had content. Imagine reading the first 15 pages of that book, and it's fairly decent, though not great by any means. Then on page 16, the author suddenly decides to go 'Hey, so I know you're reading my book, but I just felt like I wanted to type random nonsense in here for a while. Don't worry, there will be a bit more plot in 30 or so pages (which you can't skip to because magic, btw), but for now I'm just going to type nothing about nothing. Except it's not nothing. Because, you know, it exists, therefore it's something. Right? I've gone and confused myself, I think. Probably because I'm a bit of an idiot who used to write great books, then somehow started writing this terrible thing. Well anyway, how are you? Oh wait, you can't answer because you're reading. It would be neat if you could though. Blahblahblahblahblahblah......................................................." Once you've played 10 hours, you know exactly what's coming up next: More collection quests, a bit of badly written story here and there, maybe a new, only somewhat interesting party member to talk to for 3 minutes, etc. This coming from a guy who has made it far enough into the game to know this is fact, not just educated guessing.

The game is boring. Still no idea how people can possibly rate it over a 5.

-Kren (Currently 39 hours into this depressingly lacking Pac-Man wannabe)

I've put about 10 hours into the PC version game and I really don't see myself spending much more. Much like many other's reviews, I really dislike the controls. It shouldn't be a chore to loot a corpse (if you even happen to notice that there was loot left behind).

There's nothing fluid about the UI at all. The weapon/armor upgrade system is confusing as hell.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs but the skill tree doesn't feel exciting. The fact that I can fully upgrade a skill to its maximum potential within the first couple of skill points I am given just feels wrong.

I picked a Mage character.. and the majority of the time in combat is spent waiting for my hotbutton skills to be active. I gave up on "auto attacking" way before. Besides, who has time to auto attack when you are trying to position the camera to see if a rift can be 'disrupted' for the 18th time before it closes?

Have to agree with others that this might be better on console, and was likely designed FOR console. But I am wishing I could get my money back.

The UI and controls are awful on K&B and it's painful to simply play the game and you just can't appreciate the story ! I'll

I'll just take an example, the damned left click ! If you play a warrior, you have to be right next to your foes to hit them, otherwise you just play your attack animation against the wind ! Sincerely, I think I killed more air molecules than mobs ! Worst, I have to maintain it for "auto-attack" ... Yeah ! Great ! Wonderful ! Until your opponent moves on and I returns to attack the wind !

Did you even try the K&B during the testing phase ? (I'm talking to you Bioware) ...

My list of complaint is all but comprehensive, unfortunately my Eglish isn't good enough to spit out all my bile so I'll end here.

Oh, wait ! I just remembered : your companions are useless ! Or worst, because you can't program their behaviour (like ... hum ... In DA:O ?), they keep firebolling me every time ! What's on their minds ? "Hum, I see my dear is in danger ! He's fighting hand-to-hand with a gruesome demon ... Fireball !!! "

My god, it is truly baffling to witness the number of perfect reviews this game is receiving. With a team of hundreds of “professional” game developers and a budget of hundreds of millions the result is a game that is plagued by graphical anomalies and performance issues. I can’t believe I was once hyped for the release of this game. Having played a couple of hours, it consists of a banal series of quests, vacuous writing and the most mind numbingly boring combat. I’ve never had such an intense urge to close and uninstall a game than when I witnessed my Qunari pc suddenly flip and twirl about causing me to fall off a mountainside.

The levelling system is shallow and the whole RPG aspect of the game is completely dumbed-down to its most basic form. The UI is annoyingly large and completely disregards PC controls. The companions have no redeeming features and the poor animations in this game works against their hideous design – I have no idea what their designers where thinking. This was BioWare’s last chance to prove that they can still produce anything work playing.
