This is a fun FPS, but not groundbreaking by any means. The single-player is fast and the music is awesome. It looks pretty good, but perhaps a little worse than it should be. I haven't gotten incredibly far in the story, but it reminds me a lot of playing DOOM as a kid. Maybe not where I would get lost for like 30 minutes and get pissed off, but just the cool intensity of it. Multi-playerThis is a fun FPS, but not groundbreaking by any means. Multi-player is really fun, a bit slower than I'd like, but still faster than your average FPS online. I'm a baby, so I don't like games that make you have to spend every waking hour of your life to get good and this game is nice because you can have both bad games and good games despite your playing level. Overall, fun game, but I'd probably wait till it's on sale Expand

It was ok. Easily an 8/10 for single mode (I haven't tried multiplayer). But, it loses 2 points, because it does get REPETITIVE towards the last ~20% of the game (same fight styles/arenas).

Big improvement over Doom 3, this is much closer to what the original games were.
Fast gameplay, well optimized, good graphics, plenty of options, good soundtrack, fun weapons, secret rooms, plenty of action and no talking.

A few minor issues with it... most fights involve getting locked in a room with a bunch of enemies that just spawn in so you are fighting in arenas instead of across the map, there is no tension as you always know when you have cleared an area out because the music suddenly stops. I don't like having to rely on the qte kills to keep health up and they feel cheap, enemies don't drop weapons and the map design isn't quite up to the old Doom games.

These are only minor issues however, this is a good game and a good Doom game.

Shortly: the SP campaign is 9/10 easily, but since MP is basically a dumpster I have to cut a piece since it's aggregated score (and I'm being very generous by cutting only one point, but why not if SP campaign is really great).

So if you like old-school shooters and don't mind paying what it costs for 12-15hour SP campaign alone (don't put hopes into MP, really) - you must play this

So if you like old-school shooters and don't mind paying what it costs for 12-15hour SP campaign alone (don't put hopes into MP, really) - you must play this game. SP campaign is absolute blast. From the very fist moment I picked it up - I was caught up in nostalgia, because they don't make such games anymore - it's just COD, COD spam every year.. The gameplay is what you would expect from DOOM - it just feels good to slay the demons. The weapon assortment is great and BFG is damn awesome and level design is excelent with many secrets to discover. The game runs just great, I hit over 100fps on everything maxed out on mid-range gpu RX470 in 1080p.

What's bad about DOOM? Well not much to be honest, if you imagine there is no MP, the only downsides are a bit clunky to read map (on levels with multiple vertical layers) and a bit uninspired weapons and armor upgrade systems.

If you are looking for old-school FPS fun - this is must buy game.

But, they advertised and tried to show Its multiplayer as some kind of new competitive FPS
and It isn't. Multiplayer wise this game is very shallow.
The multiplayer has the gist of It's singleplayer counterpart but in a very very bad form.
I am not whining about chaingun or bad pings. It just doesn't work as a complete multiplayer.
You just run & gun. (I understand Its the spirit of Doom but still.. It's 2016!)
I don't feel any strategic motives while I'm playing It.
Aim is way too easy for It to be strategic.
It's just .. dull. I don't know how to describe it.

    Overall,

    1. The singleplayer is a good fun. (It's not perfect but again, is really fun)

    2. The multiplayer is bad.

    3. So If you like 10 to 15 hours of awesome run and can be satisfied by It (possibly furture DLC? and snapmap stuffs?), then go for it. If you're like me and love multiplayers in games, don't buy this game.

    Thanks for reading !

In addition, the game runs very well at the recommended spec and for setups not too far below it as well, though there are known issues with 2gb graphics cards that may result in occasional framerate drops. There are also a few instances of low-res textures streaming in not fully loaded. I also wasn't a fan of the challenges and weapon mastery tasks. These are incentivized with weapon upgrades/tokens though often require you to complete tasks or approach combat in a totally inefficient way (eg: kill a Mancubus with a pistol) that you would never have done otherwise. This unfortunately interrupts the flow of combat.

Anyhow, I have smashed the game since it was released yesterday morning, being a huge Doom fan and having grown up playing the originals I was excited for the new installment but was also cautious in trying to keep my expectations low in case I became disappointed with the end product. So far it has to be said that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing, it captures some of the core elements that made the original a rousing success, fast paced, brutal and full of gunplay and killing, which is what it's all about right? The weapons are pretty awesome though I do think the rocket launches is a little underpowered, but apart from that no complaints on that front, the powerups aren't found too often so it's always nice to come accross them, enemy variations are pretty good too and if you know how to vary the gore kills you can avoid them getting repetitive quickly. Upgrading is something new to the game and I like how simple it is, also it's nice to see that it is completely optional and I think the next playthrough will be done without using upgrades. That is one thing Doom does very well, it allows the player to play how they want to play, you can turn off hints, gore kill highlights, map hints etc.

The music is pretty good, very good in fact, fits the game perfectly and sometimes I think I can distinctly recognize some parts of the music.

Graphically it is immense, very well polished, textures and colours are rich, it's also extremely well optimized, I play in 2k on ultra settings with my SLI 970's and very rarely do the frames drop under 60fps. Level design is very nice as expected and the whole layout makes for a flowing experience. Storywise, obviously the emphasis is on gunplay, the story is there but obviously it's not going to be a great deal of dialogue because this is Doom afterall and not Skyrim- I have seen so much criticism on here from these 0 reviewers regarding the storyline, show's how much they know about Doom and how you shouldn't particularluy pay attention to their nay saying, I think they expected and wanted just another Call of Duty clone, **** them.

I tried my hand at the multiplayer but to be honest, so far it isn't for me, it may well grow on me but I bought Doom primarily for the single player experience so multiplayers was just an added bonus in my opinion. I will try it again in the future but for now, replaying the campaign on a harder difficulty is my objective. The snapmap editor is also a pretty user friendly tool that makes it possible to quickly make custom multiplayer maps, a nice touch.

Overall I am very pleased with the game thus far, because I am not keen on the multiplayer I don't think it will have a longevity that's any longer than Wolfenstein so I expect to play it for a couple of weeks before moving on to the next game. I think this game will appeal to old school Doom fans and players new to the franchise alike, it's easy to pick up and play. Not a perfect game by any means but definitely a massive improvement over Doom3 (which I liked incidentally), I give it an 8 out of 10 based on the single player campaign and the fact it captures the Doom mood, tone and feel, from everything, gameplay, music and visuals. I'm not usually one who listens to reviews when buying a game, I always prefer to find out for myself if I like it rather than try and make a judgement based on somebody elses perceptions, nothing wrong with listening to reviews but judging by the 10/10 and 0/10 reviews here I thought it was time someone put in a sensible user review that isn't fuelled by puberty hormones or an inherent need to troll. I am going back to play, hope this review helps.

Half Life 2 is a masterpiece. Bioshock is a masterpiece. In comparison to those games mentioned, Doom's campaign is a bare bones experience, with little story, no memorable scripted events, dated graphics, and enemies that mostly spawn in when you enter a room instead of being strategically placed on the map. The gameplay is essentially this: walk into area, kill everything in it, move on to next area. It's also totally lacking the dark, horror atmosphere of previous Dooms.

Even the much praised "secrets" hidden everywhere are pretty lazy in comparison to the '90s FPS games it draws inspiration from, most of which boil down to finding collectable Doom dolls, upgrade points, or retro levels (which we've already seen before in Rage, and more recently Shadow Warrior). In all reality, this is a really bare bones campaign compared to what we expect from a modern shooter, and certainly what we expect from a Doom game. Doom 3 was a much more robust and innovative experience, despite its worse gunplay, and it had gobs of atmosphere.

So it's a good thing it's so much fun to shoot things! Doom 2016 nailed the gunplay, the gore, the audio, and the movement. The combat is the bread and butter of the game, and it does this very well. You feel like a total badass when executing glory kills, of which there are many variations. The weapons are very well designed and each have mods that give them different abilities. They can also be upgraded and there are challenges to complete in order to use them to their full potential. It's this progression system that makes the game a lot more fun than it would be otherwise, always giving you something to work towards.

In the end, the game wins because of its fast-paced , brutal combat, but I wish it had been more. It certainly could have been. It could have been a leading title in innovation like other id games, with frightening atmosphere and hyper-realistic graphics. It could have had an actual story and thrilling set pieces, and more variation in levels. Instead, it's pure fan service, celebrating the series' legacy more than trying to take it to the next level.

But when that face-melting metal soundtrack kicks in, and you're dodging demons left and right, firing rockets at one and then shotgunning another, adrenaline pumping as you struggle to stay alive, chaining glory kills together and trying to complete challenges at the same time, it all feels immense and awesome. That's what Doom 2016 is all about. That's what's worth the price of admission.

    Inventory:
Right at the beginning of the game, it says F1 and F2 are used to switch inventory items, and LCtrl is to use items. There is also an upgrade tree for inventory items. I'm currently 8 hours into the game and I have never found an inventory item. I'm still hoping I eventually find one.

    Saving:
There's no way to manually save the game. This is a huge problem because the auto saves are based on plot points rather than locations or a timer. Dying can easily set the player back by 20 or 30 minutes. All of the found secrets are lost, all of the enemies need to be killed again, all of the items need to be picked up again. Although the game has a lot of secrets and areas to explore, the game severely punishes players for exploring. You might die because Doom Guy didn't grab onto a ledge you expected him to grab, and now you're back to where you were 30 minutes ago. This forces an ultra conservative play style that clashes with the run and gun theme of the game.

    Data Corruption:
The game crashed when I was about 2 hours into playing, and my save file was corrupted. Since there is no manual saving, and the auto save only keeps 1 save state, this means a single crash can wipe out all of your save data. All of your secrets are gone, all of your little doom guy trophies are gone, all of your upgrades are gone.A few people on the internet have complained about losing save data when they're deep into the game, and those people are justifiably angry as hell. This also means you shouldn't play Doom if your computer has any stability problems or if your neighborhood has power problems. If you get a blue screen or a power failure while playing Doom, there's a good chance all of your data will be corrupted. It's just bad game design to not allow manual saving.

10/10 Animations are very fast and aesthetic, lots of eyecandy, but won't hurt the flow of the game
8/10 Music - nice metal music, could have been a bit heavyer/louder sometimes (at least in my book)
8/10 Performance: 4-5 times the game dropped to 45fps for a couple of seconds in some of the heavyer fights in larger rooms, otherwise 60+ on Ultra with gtx780ti, i7, 16gb, 1 crash in 9h of gameplay

The only thing that really bugs me out is the lenght of the campaign, I needed only 9h to complete the game on normal difficulty (died a couple of times, definitive a challange on higher difficultys), but I need to mention that I rushed through the game and didn't payed too much attention to all the secrets and collectibles.
You can't skip the 20second intro for whatever reason, and there is no music in the menue which is a bit odd. Also you have to restart the game whenever you change from campaign to multiplayer or snapmap.

The level creation is excellent so far and I can't wait to start putting in time in designing things. This type of thing that keeps games in the forefront for years, not just a month. Quality tools to make campaigns with intelligent levels. It's available and included in the game. Enjoy!

Awesome! Bring on the official map expansions and community based snapmap levels!

If they improve multi-player not to be some strange generic Quake-lite type thing this would be a 9.

Doom is one of the best games I have played in a long time. Doom is so incredibly beautiful (I've been playing with the new GTX 1070) and so in depth. I beat the campaign mode in 3 days (but I hardly ever stopped playing it) and it was really fun. The multiplayer mode is really nice and feels pretty balanced it has some nice modes and is fun to play. I would definitely recommend doom to anyone who is looking for a fast pace shooter with good campaign. Expand

Probably one of the easiest games I've ever played on Normal difficulty. Having said that, it was also a very satisfying game. The story was a bit "meh" but let's face it. Who plays doom for the storyline?
The graphics, sound and gore is what I was in it for and it delivered on those levels easily. If you're just in for a game to KILL - then this is the one for you. Well worth the money.

I cant speak for the multi player, as its something that i have very little interest in, but the single player campaign is fantastic. Its fast, frantic and the clever use of tools like glory kills and the chainsaw drive the action superbly. Th upgrade system is fantastic and level design is very good. My only criticism is that the environments can get fairly "samey" after a while and some of the monster designs get a little dull (some extra skins could of gone a long way).

If your looking for a fast, lethal and aggressive single player game and have grown tired of the COD like snooze fests then Doom would be a decent purchase.

One of my favorite games of 2016. This game is spectacular. Fast-paced, brutal, gory, and it pays great homage to the original DOOM. Simply outstanding. The multiplayer might not be great, as it tries to combine the old DOOM's style with newer multiplayer elements and fails, but the single player is one of the most satisfying and fun experiences I've had in a long time.

Be warned! Although this game seems fun so far I noticed a very suspicious pattern with user scores. The game was sat around 73, and all of a sudden hundreds of almost simultaneous votes of 10 accompanied by hundreds of first time reviewers came in, the game has pushed up towards 8.

Paid for reviews; Metacritic, you have to do something about this, there is precedent for false reviewers

Doom is the penultimate comfort food of video games, at least in regards to the FPS genre. If you miss Doom, you miss what I anticipate to be one of two most important first person shooters of 2016. The classic returns in great shape, with all its vital elements intact. Give the campaign some time to pick up speed and it will pump your veins full of adrenaline. [07/2016, p.38]

A tribute to Doom that leaps to great heights, but fails to fully stick the landing. [Issue#252, p.60]
