To be honest i feared this game a lot. Beta was not good so i was worried (even that doom was never multiplayer game in a first place). The final game is great. Not the multiplayer but the single player is really doomish (not halo as i feared).

It is like old 90 's DOOM, fast paced action, with modern coat like perks, challenges and stunning fast graphics. Mars, UAC and Hell are detailed and beautiful.

When Rage came out, I felt that I was looking at the death of ID. A generic slop of a game with little to no excitement.

Boy was I wrong! ID have comeback not only to show that they can still make good FPS games, but they are the masters!
    Brutal, frantic and immensely satisfying!
Graphically, it looks great. On my GTX 1060, it runs at over 100+FPS at 1080p maxed out.
Forget the washed out textures of Rage and Wolfenstein. Doom looks sharp!

The sound is perfect for the game with guitars and electro sounds blasting out while your guns blaze away.
Gun sounds could use a bit more punch, but they serve their purpose.

Seriously, do yourself a favour and check it out!

Quite possibly the best Arcade FPS I have ever played. Very well optimised.

I am running 2560x1440 with SLI GTX 970, running Ultra, with everything maxed a=out and getting a good 60-70 fps - anti-aliasing on max as well! i52500k, not clocked.

The gameplay reminds me more of Quake.

    I loved Quake!

    Multiplayer is hectic :)

That is what you're getting with Doom 2016, for good and for ill. I personally found the game very enjoyable, but it should be added that I was really wanting a fast-paced shooter that was single player and the newest game I had that was scratching that itch was Serious Sam (preceded by Painkiller). I sat down with this game and asked it to keep my pulse up and send me on a gory, exhilarating ride as I mowed down the legions of Hell. And it delivered exactly what I asked of it.

This game is a very literal translation of the earliest shooters, your Doom's, your Wolfenstein's, your Duke Nukem's. On the good side, you have the fast-paced, frantic gameplay that the old ones had, and it came up with a few ways to keep the flow going as much as possible. The weapons are viscerally fun as ever and, aside from the starting pistol, none of them are ever really useless. There is a surprisingly elaborate upgrade system added that (amongst other things) helps keep earlier weapons competitive with their late-game cousins and you're free to settle into a gameplay style that suits you. The enemies are varied (though the majority of them are familiar to those who have played any Doom games) and the game moves at a decent difficulty curve. Now, on the bad side, I can say that some weapons wind up being a little vestigial depending on your play style; the double-barrel shotgun in particular was almost unused during my playthrough. Additionally, the map design is... well it's not *bad* and you can tell where you're going, but it carries that maze-like quality that the old 2.5D shooters had, so if you don't like that you won't care much for that. Though there's a very nice degree of verticality to it. As for the gore... well it's what you'd expect--simple gratuitous violence that makes your inner thirteen year old giddy if you're into that sort of thing. Again, if you don't like gore, then don't buy this game.

Now, you may have noticed that I didn't mention the story. Well... here's the thing. For the game you have, the story is exactly what it needs to be. Set-up: you wake up chained to a sarcophagus in the midst of an invasion of Hell on Mars inside a UAC facility and it's up to you to do the cleanup job. Obviously there's a bit more to it, but it's not exactly an operatic plot... but it does what it needs to do. The thing I do like is that the few characters there are have a neat amount of characterization, there's a lot of background storytelling (particularly involving the sort of place the facility you're in and what it was like prior to getting invaded), and the Doom Marine himself has a bit of characterization. Now, when I say that, he's still a silent protagonist, but you can read a bit into his actions, little things like the way he hesitates at certain points in the plot, the sheer brutality he shows towards the demons, and the way he interacts with certain objects. The story is shallow, but it's as deep as it needs to be. It keeps the story afloat and it's enough to make you comfortable in the game world, and it succeeds at what it sets out to do.

Basically, if you want a successor to the old Doom games, you have it. If that is what you wanted, then consider this a MASSIVE recommendation, 10/10, gold star, A+. It was what I wanted, and while I'm normally an RPG guy, I still found this a fun escape from all of that. Alternatively, if you are uncertain on whether you're interested in this kind of game, I'd recommend trying Painkiller or Serious Sam 3 first to do an interest check (and potentially save money). This is a game that knows what it wants to be and hits that point with full marks. It is a game that I know not everyone would care for, but I personally loved it.

Instead, by the end of the game the glory kills are not really interesting anymore and instead are more of a required action.

There are little doom dolls, kind of like Funko POPs on each level, and when you find it, a little clip of the old dooms music plays. Puts a smile on my face everytime.

There are also hidden parts of the original levels of doom in each level. You have to find a hidden lever, switch it and a wall or unique looking door will open. Its really is well thought out. they seem to progress down the original lvls as you progress down the levels in this doom.

Im not positive, but I believe this is how you unlock the old doom levels. I had the option to play the hanger level after I found one. Was quiet a bit of fun. remembering old secrets and completing it.

I've only played about 3 hours of the 13 hour campaign but it has been very entertaining. One big grip I have is there seems to be no way to fast switch between weapons on the same key. for example the pistol and chainsaw are both set to the 1 key. You hit it once, and you get the pistol, hit it again and you get the chainsaw. I thought you could maybe just double tap the key to get the second weapon, but you have to hit one, wait for it to cycle to the pistol then hit one again to cycle to the chainsaw, for a fast paced shoot em up this seems wrong. Maybe I am just missing a quick key. the plasma rifle and the chaingun are also both on the 4 key.

I have yet to try the multiplayer, but its probably not going to be my thing. I really just wanted the nostalgia of a good doom. The multiplayer looks to be more like Quake Arena.

A fanastic melee system with over a dozen unique animations, well scripted, the levels are fantastic and the enemies quite challenging. The campaign was also a pleasant surprise in that it took me about 12 hours to complete (this is very long for a modern FPS single player). The 9 rather than a 10 is for the...lacklustre multiplayer, just didn't feel great and the same care and love that was clearly lavished on the main game didn't feel quite there. There's also dozens if not hundred of nods in there to classic PC games - doom, quake and others. Oh, nearly forgot, the boss fights are the right mix of challenging and interesting with just a little bit of 'you died, learn the fight!' in there to make it not a cakewalk. Interesting take on the original Doom story too. Really this is two separate games: 8/10 on multiplayer for daring to be different to the CoD/BF bland model and being more fast paced, 10/10 for the single player, excellent and no regrets whatsoever. I hope they release some significant SP DLC packs (or better yet, sequels). Expand

Music score is a bit adolescent and could have done with some subtlety. Perfect collision detection. If you're into intricate stories and cinematics, this isn't your game. If you're into fast and furious gameplay, tight controls, exploration, and possibly industrial rock, this is DEFINITELY for you! No scopes, no chest-high walls, no cover-based mechanics - you run, you shoot, sometimes you jump, and even though that sounds simple, the Devil's in the details - literally. Enemy variations keep combat entertaining throughout the game, and the way new enemies are introduced - sometimes by surprise, sometimes as "bosses" of sorts until you realize there's three of them in one place - is just perfectly-paced.

All the new bells and whistles on top of what made the original DOOM games so good are nice, too - the lore stuff is really interesting, albeit tongue-in-cheek at all times, the weapon upgrades are nice because they're only for your alt-fire (therefore guns aren't underpowered when you first find them), the trials to get runes (a few stages in) often have an outside-the-box design to them, and the voice acting surprisingly doesn't get in the way - often because Doomguy kicks something and the game moves on, which is a nice touch.

I'd definitely recommend Doom for its single-player alone. Try SnapMap, it's interesting, and maybe don't even get into multiplayer, but it's worth the price for the campaign alone.

An utterly brilliant homage to the old school FPS. This is quintessential Doom, updated for the modern times without forgetting what it is and where it came from. Kinetic, visceral, and impactful, DOOM delivers a delightful punch to the teeth to remind audiences what a shooter is supposed to be.

In DOOM, game-play comes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And by game-play I mean gun-play and by gun-play I mean HOLY HELL these are some fantastic weapons! Shooting is fast-paced and fun. Strafing, circling, closing in for for a melee kill, I found myself constantly staying on the move to avoid enemy fire and the game rewarding me for a clever and aggressive play-style. Nearly all weapons have two different upgrade paths that you can switch up on the fly and not a single one isn't satisfying to use. Ammo is plentiful but not plentiful enough that you won't be swapping out your weapons regularly, and the increasing variety of enemies that require different approaches and tactics means you can't get comfortable with just one or two guns to see you through the day. The games signature "glory kills" are fast and satisfying, requiring you to "stun" your enemies with well placed gun fire first before closing in to finish them off. Each glory kill you pull off rewards you with extra health, a great little risk/reward mechanic that keeps the pace of the fight up and never sees you retreating from an enemy in search of more health. The chainsaw and BFG are perfectly implemented as well, incredibly over-powered one-hit-kill weapons with very limited ammo meaning you'll need to carefully consider when to break them out but always incredibly rewarding when you do.

Each level in DOOM is expansive and labyrinthine, as any good DOOM level worth it's salt should be. This ain't no corridor shooter, and you are encouraged to explore each environment thoroughly to discover all of the hidden secrets and unlockables this game has to offer. Traversing the environments is fast and fluid. You move at a satisfying clip and incorporate a clamber and, later, a double jump to navigate the large, vertical spaces.

A point against DOOM could be it's rather weak and generic story. If you're looking for a world deep with lore then you might be satisfied by what is on offer through the collectible journal entries that flesh out the UAC and their Mars research facility, but the pretty intriguing idea of a corporation-turned-cult is barely explored. Arguably, focusing more on the story might have taken away from the game-play, which is DOOM's obvious first priority, but I did sometimes find myself wishing I had a bit more motivation than DEMONS: KILL.

Another definite negative is DOOM's multiplayer offering, which feels very tacked on and is entirely forgettable. All of the kinetic energy and adrenaline found in the single player game is absent here. This is where the description "mindless shooter" fits perfectly, where not even a respectable variety of game modes can keep it from feeling wholly shallow and lifeless. DOOM's multiplayer is a temporary distraction to be played once and then never picked up again.

But, despite these faults, in the end the game is just too much fun and I have so much praise for what it does do that it is hard to fault it for what it doesn't. DOOM is an incredibly refreshing return to form and has re-energized my enthusiasm for genre that has been, in my opinion, languishing for years, bereft of any originality and becoming stale and stagnant in the process. DOOM remembers that FPS's don't need to be a dreary slog nor do they need to take themselves seriously or rely on scripted set pieces to be incredible experiences. DOOM is a must buy for any shooter fan.

And almost the hardest level is too easy because too many times you are unfulfilled when warmed up, with good amount of ammo and health, ready for the next biggest wave of enemies that never comes.

I wonder if this is a glitch because I spent nearly 30 minutes trying to find the damn thing. However, those are my only complaints. The gameplay is extremely fun, where you shoot a demon a bit and then crush, smash, or rip off his head. It feels so satisfying, as well as extremely gory. I have not touched multiplayer, but from what I played from the beta, it seems like it will be something that most may ignore or may only try for a few minutes. I have no idea what snapmap is, so my review is basically single player. I am not trying to be funny when I say within 20 seconds of starting the game, you are given a gun and are fighting demons. This game is extremely fast paced, except in for some moments. Also, DO NOT bother with walkthroughs. Remember about the ID from earlier, I never found that part. I feel like it would ruin the fun as well, so do not bother. In fact, DO NOT watch and gameplay videos, instead, buy the game. Trust me when I say it is worth it. Expand

doom is a first person shooter where you slay demons...
And you can do this in a variety of ways
as you progress through the game you’ll unlock new weapons…
and to upgrade these weapons you have to earn upgrade points by completing in level challenges, and finding collectibles..
Once you’ve unlocked all of the mods for a weapon, to get its mastery you have to complete another challenge…
This system really had me searching for opportunities as well as forced me to use every weapon at my disposal.
There are also rune challenges in these levels that unlock a rune that give you a special perk, which can also be upgraded by completing that runes individual challenge…
Doom for the most part starts fairly average..
I wasn’t impressed with the first few hours of the game at all…
But thankfully as I progressed further and started to unlock new mods and skills and the levels actually started to stand out from the crowd I started to really enjoy my time...
I was legitimately surprised at every twist and turn this game took me in…
Dooms combat can be pretty gruesome at time especially thanks to the glory kills…
but most enemies feel way too spongy for any of this to every feel truly satisfying and the novelty of the glory kill quickly wore off.
But for the most part you’re in a way solving a puzzle, pulling switches and killing waves of demons on your way…
I did get an opportunity to play on the games highest difficulty, and unfortunately playing a level on this difficulty is required for a trophy
and I say unfortunately because it’s not fun…
it really highlights the cheapness certain enemies have..
You’ll die in this mode with 1 hit easily…
Which isn’t too big of a deal if certain enemies weren’t so cheap with their attacks... mainly the demons that throw fire balls… they have extreme accuracy and can climb walls…
you literally wont see your death coming..
And if you die here you start the level all the way from the start.
    It’s just not worth it…
There is a multiplayer mode here too
6 different match types that you would recognize from most other first person shooters like team death math or domination with their own doom twist for example instead of kill confirmed you harvest souls instead of collect dog tags
You unlock weapons abilities and demons as you level which can honestly throw the balance of a game out the windows as the higher level players who are already at the time in advantage also have the stronger loadouts and demon spawn ins…
luckily the demons don’t feel all too over powered.. But they are definitely fun to play as and worth the effort to try and grab the demon spawn stone before someone else does...
The doom multiplayer is super addictive and rivals the likes of killzone 2 as one of my most favorite multiplayer modes in a game…I can easily see players sticking around until the next doom comes out
there’s also a super deep snap map mode here that lets you create scenarios, edit ai, sound lighting, spawn points and connect different logic chains for a nearly endless amount of scenarios
If you don’t feel like creating, you van also hop into other peoples published maps.
    Doom is a great game
    There’s something here for everyone...
a 12 hour single player campaign, a varied and addictive multiplayer, and a snap map mode to get your Picasso on.
    I give doom an 8.9/10

Meaty multiplayer and a campaign that plays like a sustained electric shock. Eye wateringly fun. [July 2016, p.60]

If you miss Doom, you miss what I anticipate to be one of two most important first person shooters of 2016. The classic returns in great shape, with all its vital elements intact. Give the campaign some time to pick up speed and it will pump your veins full of adrenaline. [07/2016, p.38]

A tribute to Doom that leaps to great heights, but fails to fully stick the landing. [Issue#252, p.60]
