There’s an almost childish petulance in some quarters where a negative opinion conflicts with the majority? It's usually unsubstantiated elitism crap as well. You're either old enough and haven't played the originals or you're too young to have a valid opinion on them.

For the record, I got into gaming in the 70’s when Pong was out. I actually had and still have my old pong machine. I’ve had every machine under the sun since, from the woodchip Atari & Intellivision through ZX80/81, Speccy, C64, ST, Amiga and all the consoles all the way to now.

I was in my mid 20’s when Shareware Doom released and it was a revelation and was the reason for me buying my first gaming PC (386 or 486) for £1500! Doom was a landmark title for many reasons and along with the release of the PS1, is perhaps the only other gaming release which stands apart as a revolution in gaming.

Yes, Wolfenstein came first but, that title was pretty much overlooked due to the fact PC Gaming back then wasn’t hugely popular and tbh, it wasn’t that great either. Doom in one fell swoop changed all that with its stellar innovation because 25 years ago, nothing like it had ever been seen before. It beared no resemblance to its older brother Wolfenstein, which was the bedrock for Doom. Gone were the blue walls and Nazi’s and in their place was Hell. The sounds, the graphics and blindingly fast game play were simply stunning not only to play but also to watch. That Shareware title (and the fact it was SW demonstrated that ID weren’t confident of its success) would define the entire FPS genre. Quite simply, it was a revolution.

Fast forward to now. Do I still want to play Doom? No I don’t. Why? Because in plain and simple terms, the mechanics of Doom are literally last century and it’s glaring limitations are cruelly exposed when stood against titles that have since improved vastly upon it. It’s like asking would I prefer to play Outrun ahead of Dirt Rally (no I wouldn’t).

Against my better judgement and mainly because of the glowing feedback on here, Steam and elsewhere, I downloaded it. I honestly wish I hadn’t because some things are best left in the past. I wanted it to succeed (which I suppose it has tbh). I wanted it to be great. I wanted ID to transport me back to those halcyon days of running round shooting endless Imps and Cacodemons. It doesn’t do that though. It certainly tries and whilst the game play somewhat resembles Doom of old, it’s not what I want anymore. After a not inconsequential 10 hours of playing (well over halfway), I’ve had enough of it and getting to that 10 hour mark has been a slog.

Do you know when I know a game isn’t holding my interest? I get fidgety, my mind starts wandering to other things and my legs start bouncing on my feet under the desk. This usually happens when I have to read a text book or perform some mundane task in preparation for something I have to learn. That is what I’m experiencing with Doom! I’m struggling to enjoy it in any meaningful way and I suspect that is because I’ve been here before, a long time ago. For want of a better description – it’s generic and dare I say it, quite boring.

Maybe it’s my age or maybe my gaming tastes have changed but, the lack of intelligence this game requires is almost insulting. From the get go, you run a few corridors and shoot some spawning enemies, then you enter an arena and keep shooting until you’ve defeated X amount of mobs. You then repeat the process of a few more corridors and another arena to defeat another X amount of mobs… rinse and repeat. This mechanic was great twenty odd years ago because it was ground breaking. It’s not great now and in fact, it’s downright decrepit and it shows. Gaming, and FPS gaming in particular has changed far beyond what Doom started all those years ago.

Whilst I’m happy that many are enjoying it and appear pleased that it’s exactly what they wanted, I’d seriously have to question this because I'm finding it mind numbing. As said, I’m 10 hours in and I can’t last more than 30-40 minutes before my legs start bouncing and the need to load up Dark Souls 3, TR or Uncharted 4 takes over.

At best it is a very mediocre FPS built on what is a relic of a game play model and I suspect that had this been another game made by any other company, public opinion would not have been so gushing towards it. The fact it is ‘Doom’ by ‘ID’ means the rose tinted fanboy brigade will just about accept anything and proclaim it as the best thing since sliced bread even when it isn’t.

In 6 months’ time, I think people will look back on Doom and probably admit that it was a very average, generic and dare I say it, boring shooter with zero depth and which required zero intelligence.

    A shame.

As with all negative reviews I'm sure this one will be quickly voted down by the paid tro##s that lurk here. I purposely misspelled that word to avoid getting reported for abuse as my last review that stated similar was reported for using the word weir#o. Seriously Metacritic how do you not know this?

Doom isn't a terrible game, it's just a boring FPS with nothing revolutionary or even interesting. I'm actually so unimpressed I don't even want to write a review. I just want to complain about Bethesda paying people to tro## Metacritic and giving this game a 10 out of 10.

Although this game is a bit different as it seems even the paid reviewers don’t want to rate this game at release. Bethesda is quickly using up its creditably capital. Fallout 4 was probably their last great cash grab. The next Elder Scrolls better knock the socks off the world because you won’t get away with this garbage a third time. Funny how the mighty gets greedy and destroys the heart and soul of what made them great, talent.

I'm writing a quick review based on my first few hours of gameplay in campaign mode only. If you're thinking about buying this game, maybe this information will help you decide.

First, let's cut the crap. This game is not a 9 or 10, nor is it a 1 or 2. I'm giving it a 7 for the reasons listed below.

This is a reboot of the original DooM, nothing more and nothing less. If you were expecting something that plays like DooM 3, please adjust your expectations. This game is fast paced, the enemies are numerous, and you must sustain yourself by picking up the ammo and life items the enemies drop when you kill them. Again, just like the original DooM of yore. You also pick up key cards and look for hidden caches. Nothing new here for veterans of DooM.

If I were to compare this to other games, it is a mix of original DooM, DooM 3 (in the graphics, atmosphere, and sound department) and Space Marine. The combat gives you plenty of choices, but the funnest option is to set up your "Glory kills" with your guns. That is, you stun the enemy with a gun shot, then finish them with your R3 button at closer range. Combat is fluid and it works, in my opinion.

Here is what the game does not have:
    Aiming down the sights
    Cut scenes
    Very much dialogue

All of which is a plus for me, not a minus. If you like "cinematic" games like The Last of Us, this game is probably not for you. If you like games like DooM 1 and 2, Half Life, and Metroid, this game is probably for you. I've always considered long dialogues and cut scenes in video games to be a waste of my time. I like the story to be told by exploring the game world and playing the game.

Whether or not you want to wait for a price drop (or skip this altogether) depends on how much you loved (or did not love) the run and gun style of older shooters.

Again, I have not dipped my toed into multi player yet. That could alter my review and if it does I'll update this review.

It's an ok shooter game. Good graphics, fast paced action and it gets challenging at times. The soundtrack is also really good.

The levels are pretty linear however. You pretty much only move forward, so the game basically plays itself, instead of making you think where you need to go next. I also don't think that it's worth the full price, as it isn't really that innovative in any way.

I can't help but compare it to Wolfenstein: New Order. People, Doom 2016 HAS NOTHING over W:NO. The latter is simply a masterpiece with tons of cut scenes, tons of story, tons of dialogues and npc interactions. Doom is about shooting monsters through narrow corridors, that's it. Doom 2016 is not even scary like Doom 3. Doom 2016 is just an average run of the mill shooter that could have been made just as well by Nobody Studios and not ID.

Also it's very short, about 10 hours.

Multiplayer? Oh god, it's Quake. If you like to play such a basic and simple shooter like Quake in the year 2016 when we have CoD, Counterstrike and Overwatch, by all means, do play it, but the majority of players will just see it the same as they see the singleplayer: dull and unimpressive.

Save your money. This game is not worth it. I have no idea what did they do with the budget, this game feels like it was made with a really small budget for an AAA game.

I can stare at my time played in disbelief all I want, but there it is saying I've merely played 20 hours over the course of my sixty dollar purchase way back when. This is offensively SHORT compared to the deafening and possibly disturbing amount of hours I've dumped into Shadow Warrior 2, Quake, Quake 2, Duke Nukem and the original 1993 Doom individually. So was it just me? Did everyone think this game was amazing when it first came out? I mean it had a multiplayer mode that died shortly after release, and the campaign was mostly good till you got so beefed up and weapon upgraded that the entire last act felt more like a waltz through the park than a seige upon the forces of Hell.

That story too was a huge issue. Seeing as it basically has a dumb, pointless and what I suppose the developers might call "cheeky" "locking you in a room while a character talks at you" cutscene segments, I get the feeling they were trying to tell a serious story, realized this was "Doom" and decided to just frame it as ironic instead. Yeah guys, we get it you spent a lot of money on all these voice actors and wrote a lot of dialogue, but strangely people are still playing the wibbly-wobbly cardboard cut-out enemy version of Doom with mods without any concerns for voice actors or their contracts. I genuinely detest the soundtrack throughout considering its essentially blaring during every excursion or mini arena duke out and generally lacks a lot of restraint besides being pretty entertaining to listen to outside of game play. Its so overbearing at times that I couldn't focus on what was happening, and given how a lot of the smaller enemies can literally slide into Doom guy from a few feet away or don't always telegraph their attacks, can lead to some frustrating sections.

Even today, after several playthroughs I don't remember anything about the game or most of the levels. Coincendentally the opening is memorable if only for the first few key cards attached to random lifeless appendages, but after that it gets kind of predictable and stale to be quite honest. Every room triggers a small skirmish, every keycard is a small puzzle to obtain, and the glory kills don't exactly do anything but take up play time and generally draw fights on longer than they needed to be. I'm glad they look amazing, because otherwise I would've just as well wished for an option in the game included by developers to just turn them off entirely. Visually pinning down "nu-doom" is kind of difficult since at times it is quite bland. I know you'll probably hate me for saying so, but "Doom 3" was clearly still referenced for the level design, and they are strikingly similar outside of the obvious availability of light in the latter as opposed to the lack of it from the former. This is perplexing since even some of the enemy designs were sort of scrambled between old and new to create a slightly characterized cartoonier 3D rendered version.

The weapons are all kind of lame upon revisiting the gunfights, and merely become less interesting to use as the game goes on because by the time you have some of the giant minigun upgrades or the rocket launcher or even the double-barreled shotgun, its all you'll be using for most of the last act. Its a real that not only was "Half-life 2" filled with an entire weapon roster of bland, uninspired generic boom-boom guns, but that a game 12 years later has barely moved beyond the bland itself, only limiting grenades for some reason and leaving the rest of the action reduced to drawn out cinematic gory death animations- often closer to "QTE's" than actual game play mechanics.

I think "nu-DOOM" will barely be remembered in a few more years, considering the sequel pretty much improved upon everything lacking in the first installment, but its also harder to compare it to previous installments given that is essentially the epitome of modern shooters that don't have anything to do with the fictional wars between Russians or random middle-eastern terrorists like the "Call of Duty" franchise, but if that's the case than the only game it can be compared to is "Halo" and all of the modern tripe it injected into the landscape of first-person shooters for the rest of time immortal. In the end, it was fun, but not rewarding and many of the challenges turned out to be mostly a waste of time unless you're a completionist slug who cannot live without achieving something imaginary. Its also kind of not that hard unless you play on "instant game-over sent back to first level" difficulty, which honestly doesn't sound like much fun for anyone really. It borders on "back to formula," and "disarmingly goofy" which makes its accomplishments much harder to take seriously as time goes by.

It ruins the tempo and strategizing and was done to keep consoles running smoothly.

After finishing an arena, the game is slowed down with tedious exploring, bad story telling, scripted cut scenes and jumping to platforms before reaching another small group of enemies in the next arena. This constant starting and stopping of action takes you out of the game. Add to this an extremely low ammo count and the action becomes a dance where you must watch for Glory Kills and Chainsaw kills to get needed supplies every few seconds. Basically, the game gets in the way of itself at every turn.

The 2016 DOOM is hoping to blow audiences away with a game with amazing graphics and gameplay which harkens back to the 1990s.

It succeeds, albeit incompletely – as while the game is quite good at times, it also reminds us all of exactly why things changed, and it isn’t nearly as memorable as I would have expected.

DOOM has a very old school aesthetic in some ways. Gone is reloading – you can fire all of your weapons until you are out of ammunition. Gone is a limitation on weapons carried – you eventually tote around ten primary weapons, most of which have two weapon attachments which change their alternative fire, as well as three equipment items, two of which are grenades and one of which is a hologram used to draw enemy fire. There is no regenerating health – instead, ammunition is lying around the levels in boxes lying on the ground, there are health packs and armor packs lying around, and in a few areas there are temporary power-ups such as quad damage, invincibility, haste, and similar things which make you that much more powerful for a short period of time.

Coupled to this is always running around the level by default, the ability to pull yourself up to platforms, the ability to double jump (eventually), and a general run-and-gun style of gameplay as the demons try to close in from all angles due to the design of various areas, forcing you to keep moving if you don’t want an enemy to attack you from behind. Some of the later enemies have pretty high health as well, further encouraging you to run around as if you stay in place, they will get to you before you kill them.

The enemies in the game have okay if not amazing variety – there’s over a dozen kinds of enemies, from agile imps which throw ranged attacks at you and attack you sometimes, to enemies with shields, to a couple varieties of flying enemies (one a suicidal kamikaze, one a ranged attacker), a few big ground melee demons, a couple big ranged demons, and some big mixed-ranged demons. While these are okay in terms of variety, it isn’t great, and the game stops introducing new demons about halfway through. This is unfortunate, as beyond that point, the only “new demons” are a couple of remixes of older ones (which aren’t that new feeling), as well as three bosses which, while okay, are not exactly amazing.

Sadly, this leads the game to feel a bit stale after a while – once you’ve unlocked all the weapons and fought all the enemy types, there’s about half a dozen levels left in the game for you to fight through. Worse, the game gets quite a bit easier at that point, both because there’s nothing new to throw at you, as well as because you just continually get more and more overpowered as you unlock more powers for your weapon secondary fires and various static bonuses continue to accrue in the forms of adjustable powers from unlockable runes which you acquire in various levels, as well as the upgrades to your armor abilities and base health and armor. The BFG is almost comically overpowered, and the chainsaw, while limited in ammunition, ensures that you never run out of ammo of anything important. Indeed, in some of the later portions of the game you can unlock rune combinations which effectively give you infinite ammo and make it very easy to maintain tons of health and armor, making the game almost trivial in some places, while the BFG can be used to bail you out of any seriously difficult situation – including the bosses.

Additionally, running around and picking up ammo and health and armor, while it feels novel at first, is actually kind of tedious. Worse, it actually highlights one of the problems of many modern games with collectables – secrets seem like this really cool thing, but in practice they end up slowing down gameplay as you wander around hunting for them. This results in the game’s pacing, which is pretty solid if you just play through, being interrupted at times by wandering around looking for resources and secrets.

This really just kind of highlights why some of the old DOOM things aren’t done anymore – hunting down ammo, armor, and health packs just isn’t that fun, and secret hunting can interrupt the flow of the game’s otherwise pretty intense gameplay.

That being said, this game is pretty fun for a good chunk of its run. The story, while nothing special, works pretty well, the DOOM Marine’s attitude towards mission control is kind of amusing as he starts off by smashing a few screens which try to deliver exposition at the player, there are only a limited number of cutscenes to interrupt the flow of the game, and the actual run-around-and-shoot-demons-that-are-spawning-constantly gameplay works pretty well.

Now, it does have some downsides.
    - Maps enviroment are a bit confusing, sometimes it's hard to disitnguish which room are you on.
    - Glory kills are fun to see the first time, they they only get annoying and take away from the combat itself.
    - Checkpoint saving is a TERRIBLE idea and an horrible trend. We should be able to save whenever we want to.
    - The map is kinda confused, and, worst of all it resets every time you close it, forcing you to zoom and reposition it as you need.
    - denuvo is horrible.
    - It's only on steam.

EDIT: since my save file have been corrupted while I was almost at the end, and since it is A WELL KNOWN BUG, I decided to remove 3 points from my verdict.

It's tough to navigate around some of the faster moving demons and the stupid small sections they throw you in to fight them. They should have added sprint and some open area levels to make full use of the weapons because most enemies just rush you all the time.

Visually it's superb like some of the UAC facility levels, weapons, few enemy designs (revenant, the undead and cacodemon being the only ones that stood out), and slick menu presentation. Loading times are ridiculous. Audio is hit and miss. Sound effects are good but some of the gun sounds and explosions are weak. Had to crank my volume a little bit. They nailed the music which is constantly there sometimes subtlety or full force.

A sequel or DLC needs to add more variety (Phobos and Deimos?) because it was overall missing something I can't quite put my finger on? It badly needed something fresh because it all felt too mundane. It needs a story that isn't a rehash. It basically is a remake of Doom 3. That's not to say it sucks. It was a blast to play but too arcade-ish and similar for me. Worth a rental or pick it up when it drops to $20.

The graphics are alright but beware that if you are not running high end hardware you will have to turn them down to the point where they look like a 10 year old game and is still jittery which is quite disappointing. Seems very badly optimized but could be Nvidia drivers.

So to recap, the game is fun and feels like a true doom (unlike doom 3) and is worth around €30, but I would not advise paying more than €40 for this.

A surprisingly solid, quick paced and brutal FPS that brings something that feels new to a tired genre, even if it doesn't have a unique bone in its' body.

Doom is essentially a reboot of the legendary first game, and while fans of the original will be disappointed by changes to the health system, the pacing is very good, retaining the "move on to the next group of demons" dynamic.

Doom is essentially a reboot of the legendary first game, and while fans of the original will be disappointed by changes to the health system, the pacing is very good, retaining the "move on to the next group of demons" dynamic. There's an overfocus on melee which, while satisfyingly brutal, does become old after a while, but it still comes across as fresh just because of the abundance of drab military shooters in the market it competes with.

Surprisingly, the campaign is the best part of the game for me. Yes, a decent campaign mode in an FPS for the first time in what feels like forever! It's nothing revolutionary, and this isn't a top drawer narrative RPG experience or anything like it, but it is competent and feels like a focus has been placed on it.

Much was made about the overuse of browns and greys in the colour scheme before release, but I can confirm that the art style is good. Not great, but good. Personally, as an old Doom player, I would have appreciated a lot more colour variation and imagination, but I can understand that the era we live in doesn't make that "cool", so the art direction is what it is - nothing special, but passable, despite some low quality textures in certain areas.

Overall, this is a surprisingly decent game. Is it worth full price? If you're a big FPS fan, then probably - it's going to be worth it to you more than whatever the latest shovel of CoD crap is anyway. It would have been easy for Bethesda to take the Doom licence and make a quick cash grab; they haven't done that.

    Con's
    - U dont buy a FPS game for 10 h long story mode with 0 choices and replayability (Well, if You like secret hunt/archiev's/higher difficulty etc U might add +10h to totall time played).

    - FPS games usually shine in Multiplayer (and thats why everyone i know buy's fps games in the first place) And Dooms multiplayer is, simply put, BAD. Ive played DOOM NDA alpha, then closed beta, then open beta and i must say one thing - Its not "fun" to pwn other players in demon form or using gauss/bfg but You are forced to use those to win. Its not rewarding or challenging. U dont win by outskilling opponent, (with pro gunplay, dedly accuracy + tactic). You win games by controlling demon rune/power weapon spawns. There are way more problems with multiplayer (announcer/loadouts/hack modules/only 9 small maps/ no deadicated servers etc.)

    - Snapmap tool -> Its cool for about 20 min, but then U start to notice it's limitation's (4 player only/12 monsters spawn max/ 1 environment/ U build from premade piece's).

    * The enemy attacks (AI) are more than a little dumb so far. You can easily get them to follow you and just pummel them while running backwards.
    * It feels a bit like a COD version of Doom.
    * I swear I saw some typos in the text placeholders.
    * If I used the gamma slider in the way the game tells me to, I would be able to see basically nothing of note - so Ignore that, IMHO.
    * Weapons fire isn't amazingly accurate... it almost feels like it was made to be slightly forgiving if you were to play in using a gamepad. Not that I am.
    * I have already got trapped in a couple of locations (foundry, in between a couple of metal bars, to mention one) and had to restart.
    * It definitely is mindless and requires very little thought. Just follow the lights and you will advance in your game.
    * Health popping out of beings you kill by hand... what is that all about?!?!?!
    * Personally, I cant stand chosen level ups and skill customisation.
    * Some of the "sparks" look like flying pixels and nothing more.

    The things I like:
    * The game is a smooth as silk and has no frame judder or other textural oddities.
    * The level design isn't that bad. It is just a shame that it is so linear.
    * The ability to climb a little is nice - although goes against physics a lot of the time.
    * Still a better love story that Twilight.

To me it plays a lot more like Quake 2, with Quake 3 jump mechanics and weapons if that makes any sense. Which in itself isn't necessary a bad thing. I would've wanted something more akin to the old Doom, but I guess considering how much an AAA game costs to develop these days they just can't do anything risky like that and have to cater to the current FPS target demographic.

Graphics are really nice, art direction on the other hand could use a bit of work. The Mars environments remind a lot about Doom 3's environments actually, although a lot brighter of course. The enemy design feels a bit "safe" to me. They don't look gruesome enough, more like they were out of Halo or something (point in case - the enemy with the silly energy shield). Hell looks a bit boring too. They should've gone full Cannibal Corpse instead, which of course they would never do because of the whole lowest common denominator reason again.

The worst and truly most terrifying enemy you'll encounter is the level design itself. More often than not I found myself dying because of the small enclosed spaces rather than the enemies themselves. Which feels a bit cheap. Not a huge fan of the combat arena mechanic either. This certainly feels very un-Doomlike since in Doom you can always back off into a safe area and win a fight no matter how low health you are on. Not possible here once you find yourself in a place where demons keep teleporting in and make your life miserable. Since they will always surround you and flank you. I believe the IGN review touched upon this as well.

I don't mind the glory kills in and of themselves, they are really quick and feel satisfying. But they are this game's regenerating health in disguise. As long as there are enemies you can always get more health and the game is designed with this in mind. Which is 100 percent NOT how it was done in old school games such as Doom.

I played through the game on Ultra Violence which felt very easy. Tried the first two stages on Nightmare and yes it felt hard, but in a cheap kind of way. You get killed in one or two hits, and it is very hard to keep track of where all enemies are at all times since they blend in to the environment and/or are very small (such as the imps). Also most of the enemies and/or their projectiles are very fast, which yet again is not how the old Doom handled it.

If you like FPS games you'll probably like this one, but it certainly doesn't feel like Doom at all I'd say. I prefer Doom 3 to this since it tried to go a new direction and it had a lot of atmosphere and suspense that this game lacks.

It's lacking atmosphere, It's lacking horror, It's lacking interesting areas that keep me engaged. The original DOOM, every stage felt new, different. Dark and light areas would meld seamlessly. I couldnt wait to see what the next level would look like. Some bits dark as hell, some bits light. All areas in DOOM 4, feels like the area before. Every area feels like survival mode in Left 4 Dead 2 and looks almost the same. EVERY AREA FEELS THE SAME TO ME.

Believe it or not, DOOM 3 had heaps of areas that were exactly like the originals , enemies lunging at the player, out of walls, like the originals, dark areas..yes, there was DARK AREAS IN THE ORIGINAL DOOM, go back and play it, there's dark areas all through the original DOOM games, almost in every stage. The original DOOM games were survival horror action games. The growling behind walls, the limited ammo. Limited Health packs. creatures coming out of nowehre out of stone pillars or through portals. Sometimes i would almost run out of ammo and need to scurry to find bullets and medikits. Which is similar in this. But it's easier with the inclusion of health falling out of enemies. But that's ok, its helpful. That doesnt really bother me, making it super casual. So more people dont get frustrated, because they cant find a health pack or something. Just melee a demon, you no longer need health packs......

The enemies are more creative in this version, not better, just more creative than the originals and DOOM 3. DOes that make them better or more fun to kill? I'm not so sure about that. The large jumping demon in DOOM 4, i found WAY more menacing and scarier and more difficult to deal with, in DOOM 3.

    On a sidenote......

The people that think that the original DOOM games were all bright and lit up all the time. I seriously think they had the brightness turned all the way up and weren't playing it the way it was originally intended. There's a reason there's nightvision glasses in the original DOOM games. Thus they came up with the flashlight concept in DOOM3, instead of nightvision. Then ruined the great flashlight mechanic, in the stupid BFG HD edition, that made the game terrifying and then made it casual friendly, they didn't even put an option in for people that wanted to retain the original vision from John Carmack. DOOM 3 was a mix of dark stages and light stages...just like the originals. In the originals there was no health falling out of enemies, Enemies only spawned out of portals, not all around the player on every stage. In DOOM 3 SOME enemies spawned from hell and some spawned out of walls or were just walking around , like the originals. In DOOM 4 almost ALL enemies spawn around the player. Its almost like Killing floor or survival mode in Left 4 dead 2, every single area. That's not DOOM. Its a very cheap way of doing it. SPAWN enemies, rinse and repeat. Every area actually felt like the area before the last one. In DOOM 3 every area, felt new and interesting and on purpose. Having all floating rocks everywhere to me, isnt interesting level design. Its a bit irritating and annoying having to constantly jump up to areas. It's almost like a platform/parkour with a gun, game.

    Anyway.....

I dont think DOOM 4 is a bad game. Its fun, its fine, its a bit of action mixed with parkour , but It's not a great DOOM game for me. I think DOOM with the 20b Brutal mod is more fun for me than DOOM 4. If you havent played it, get the original doom games , download the brutal Doom mod and check that out, its super cool. Super bloody and just as destructive as DOOM 4. Matter of fact, if you want blood, theres more of it, in the Brutal Doom mod than DOOM 4. There's even more blood, in DOOM 3.

Do i like DOOM 4? Im not sure. I like that theres demons, they spawn and shoot and I have some cool guns and can kill a bunch of demons and chainsaw some of them in the head. But I honestly don't think I could replay this more than twice. I can replay DOOM 1,2 and Final Doom in HD 1080p with mods and DOOM 3 over and over and over and over. I think it boils down to atmosphere in both Doom 1 and Doom 2 and DOOM 3. There's more of it. The levels are more interesting and fun to navigate in teh originals, I found like I was walking around a lot doing fck all in DOOM 4 and trying to reach hard to get areas. I just overall flat out and enjoyed the originals with the brutal Doom mod and DOOM 3 more than this.

Instead of jumpstarting the franchise, id software plays it safe. Doom’s misguided emphasis on platforming and storytelling are neither successful nor necessary. The campaign is neither gruesome nor scary. Battles are easy and predictable. The multiplayer is a crappy mashup of everything Halo and COD. There’s nothing inventive or fresh here. id Software is a one trick pony who hasn’t delivered anything worthwhile in quite a long time.

So I’ll start with the positives. Oh wait, there isn’t much. Gunplay is tight. It’s comparable to Destiny. However, weapons feel a bit too powerful at lower difficulties and hitboxes are smaller than the actual targets. Even on harder difficulties, Doom is extremely easy. I never lose battles. Ever. For the most part, enemies are slow with easily avoided attacks. Battles happen in waves. Basically, when something is discovered or unlocked, tons of enemies appear. The area is sealed off—like Devil May Cry—and all enemies must be killed to progress to the next area. Rinse and repeat 100 times. The quarantine system even announces when waves are about to start and when they’ve ended making every experience predictable.

Performance is snappy in most scenarios. Unfortunately, fps will drop on larger maps or in engagements with more than a handful of enemies. Graphics are merely OK. Doom randomly shut downs without so much as an error message. It’s riddled with graphical anomalies and inconsistent textures. Doom runs better than Wolfenstein: The New Order did at launch, but I’m still not impressed. There are older games that push out more remarkable visuals. The experience here is just average.

Doom’s story is as silly as it is unnecessary. Basically, a corporation tried to harness Hell’s energy thru interdimensional portals and everything went to…err….Hell. Pun aside, that IS the story. It’s stupid. Between the bits of dialogue and occasional battles, nothing exciting happens in Doom. In each level I spend 5-6 minutes in battles, 2-3 minutes listening to pointless dialogue, and 25-30 platforming and searching for hidden rooms. The heavy emphases on exploration and platforming ditches Dooms legendary underpinnings: Action heavy arenas filled to the brim with gruesome demons. If I want to play a first person platformer, I’ll pop in Metroid Prime—one of the best in existence. But when I load Doom, I expect nonstop carnage, especially since that’s how it’s marketed.

One big selling point of this Doom is the upgradable Praetor suit. Unfortunately, that’s more hype. Other than health and ammo boosts, most upgrades are worthless. Rune Challenges unlock runes which boost passive abilities, like boosting ammo drops. The implementation was ripped directly from Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. The challenges take place on the same few maps, and the difficulty can be so contrived that casual players will skip them altogether. This begs the question: Why can’t the rest of the campaign be this challenging? On the same thought, I hated the challenges in Just Cause 3 because they are silly and break the immersion. And I hate them in Doom for the same reasons. And like JC3, the rune upgrades in Doom aren’t worthwhile. Since each level in Doom’s campaign already contains mission challenges, why must rune challenges be separate? Why not seamlessly incorporate them into the action? Oh right, there isn’t much action.

Doom’s campaign fails to spark nostalgia or illicit any WTF moments. It’s truly evident that twelve year old Quake 4 was id’s last gruesome offering. Doom incorporates so many ideas, yet it excels at nothing. I remember when id was the revered grandfather of shooters. It singlehandedly propelled first person combat into the forefront of gaming. Now it’s just an unimaginative follower.

As for the multiplayer? It sucks. It’s so terrible I picked up Battleborn and Overwatch and haven’t looked back. Like the campaign, Doom’s multiplayer tries to incorporate too many elements. That’s the primary reason some people refer to it as “Unreal Call of Halo”. They’re right. Doom’s multiplayer is supposed to be an arena shooter harkening back to the old days. Someone at id didn’t get the memo or doesn’t understand what makes up an “arena shooter”. Instead, gamers got an unfocused mess that simply copies popular ideas from other franchises. Just like the campaign. The COD style loadouts alone are enough to disqualify Doom as an arena shooter. Halo 5 is probably the best arena style mp experience on consoles right now and still is one of my top picks.

Doom is definitely one of the worst games I’ve played in 2016. I would place it below The Division. It’s boring, uninspired, and manages just average performance and visuals. The multiplayer is an unfocused mess—clearly an afterthought. My suggestion is to pass on Doom altogether and pick up Quake 4 if you need an id fix.

Fun game. Blow stuff up, it goes splat.

I purchased Doom 6 months after release date, but it's still buggy. The game slows down to a crawl every 30 minutes or so. Deaths and map changes seem to cause it. I must exit game and reload to continue.

6 for the glitches; otherwise 7 or 8.

Beautiful graphics, but the game itself is incredibly boring. In essence, this is a room shooter, where you go into the room, the doors close and the enemies begin to appear. When you've killed everyone, the doors open and the next room (exactly the same) is waiting for you. The plot is sluggish. The levels are too big with a lot of jumps and pull-ups.

1.GENIOUS WEAPON DESIGN, SHOOTING ANIMATIONS ARE AWESOME, WANTS TO SHOOT AND SHOOT AND RELOAD.
2.Mysterious ATMOSPHERE of the space base, where every exit to the street caused an awesome thrill, from finding such a place.
What is the point of this game? Pinekiller and Serious sam is much better, they have great design, better play these games, or better just buy and try original Doom (1993), Doom 2016 its regression, there is only new graphics, developers of Doom 2016 is untalented impotents.

The atmosphere of the game was amazing the metallic rock in the game was excellent, and the horrifying sound of the monsters sent shivers down my spine. The design of the hordes of hell were excellent, and combined with the amazing atmosphere and ambiance, drew me into the game. Other great pluses include the combat system, the graphics, and map design. I really enjoyed the guns and upgrading each gun with new attachments and power-ups and the executions were brutal and epic. I really enjoyed how the combat system was very smart, smooth, and intuitive, especially the combat wheel which slowed down time whilst switching weapons. The smoothness in particular was amazing, and playing at 144fps on a high refresh rate monitor made it even more enjoyable, and higlights the dispartiy between consoles and PCs. The map design was another highlight. Each area of the game was cleverly designed so you could utilize the environment to your advantage. DOOM's graphics and art design are gorgeous. Sometimes I stopped just to stare at the scenery, from the desolate Martian landscape to the bleak environment of hell. However, the main weakness of the game in my opinion, comes from the story aspect of the game. Although there is much lore and secrets to be found in the game, the main story was quite bland in my opinion, and most of the objectives in the game consists of reaching this objective or that objective without much satisfaction or payoff. The linear pacing of the story made it quite bland, and it felt quite tedious. At times, completing meaningful objectives felt like chores. This greatly detracted my overall enjoyment of the game. Overall, DOOM is a solid FPS. The design, score, graphics, and combat of the game excelled, while the story was mediocre. I look forward to playing other ID Software games in the future, as DOOM has shown they are a team capable of creating fun shoot em' up games. Expand

Definitely not. This is an actionic shooter and its 100% about the gameplay. And here i got a little bit dissapointed. To advantages, i must say that it was non-stop action, fast and furious. Medium level of difficulty was idealic for me: it wasnt easy at all, but still i was dying pretty rarely. That is pretty rare for remakes of old games, they are usually as hard as they were in original, and that is why i grateful to devs.
In opposite, the game become extremely boring in the end, it's like im playing just to see final scene. I think, it should have been little bit shorter. Also, a huge disadvantage for me was this poor map design (i mean the hud). This is very active, fast game. And when you have to make huge pauses, to understand where is my next checkpoint, where is a secret etc. It would be much better, if there were a mini-map with an opportunity to set own markers.

All-in-all, it was a fun for few nights, i wasnt excited at all in the end and not sure if i ever will play it again. For me its not a "masterpiece", as some people draw it.

This game’s cool, it lets you go berserk and ravage every creature you find without reason. Oh, what? There is a story, a lore and a lot of backstory? I so don’t care! Let me kill demons, I don’t need no reason!

The main interesting mechanic from DOOM, as stated by Mark Brown (GMTK), is the fact that you can recover energy by finishing enemies at close-range with your fists when they’re low on health. First, it feels really good, there’s so much juice in each animation it’s really enjoyable to do it even after hundreds of these “glory kills”. But the main point is to make the player always in the center of the action, never sniping from far away, but instead go all in, especially when at low health. High risk, high reward.

The worst thing in this game is the sound design. Enemies that are below you appear to be right next to you. Sometimes I could hear enemies all around me, but when I looked, noone was there. They were all in another room below or above me. This is so bad to hear this in a game from 2016. While talking about the sound design, the metal-electro-indus music will engage you into the fight when there are enemies… but won’t stop until you find the last enemy in the zone, which is sometimes hidden or far away. So you run around, without anyone in view, but still listening to an hardcore music. Disturbing.

While playing, you’ll have a lot of possible challenges to complete, like killing 4 demons in a single gatling charge, or kill a big monster only with your sidearm. They change the way you play, making you try new weapons, new tactics, new ways to slaughter. But there may be too many challenges, and I found myself distracted a lot by these (because I wanted them all), which broke the flow. But when finally I unlocked all challenges, I was free to play the game any way I wanted, and I enjoyed it again at full potential, going as fast as possible, using the powerful arsenal given to me.

The game also has a lot of secret areas, so if you want to find them all, you can’t just go from a killing spree into another, but you have to carefully inspect each room, and use the map in the pause menu to detect secret zones, which also break the flow. At first, I finished the levels normally, then went back to find the secrets. I really appreciated that I could do that. But at a certain point in the game, I wasn’t able to backtrack anymore, so I had to stop this technique and examine the rooms after each massacre, breaking the flow each time. Too bad they didn’t design the later levels like the first ones.

+/- An initial sense of freedom due to the different paths, unfortunately, the rest of the levels become linear and schematic

    - Uninteresting collectibles
    - Boss fights are tedious and easily predictable with their movements and attacks.
Personally, I think they're lame (epic demon stands far away from us and shoots rockets?!)
    - Guns, apart from shotguns and rocket launcher, don't have that "doom and destroy" feel. They like more Call of Duty in space style.
    - Over time, tiresome situations of "closing" the level and having to kill all the monsters (appearing in a few waves until the opponents are no more). It becomes more "move and shoot, repeat x1000 times".

It's rare that I feel so strongly about such a decidedly average game, but given the heaps of praises lavished toward it, I feel compelled to offer a different perspective.

In theory, this game should appeal to me as someone who enjoyed the original DOOM. It's a simple but elegant premise. Portal to hell opens up. Demons pour out. Doom Guy kicks the sh*t out of them both figuratively and literally, using all extravagantly violent means at his disposal. Nothing more, nothing less. Brutal Doom especially is a particular favorite of mine, taking the original game's concept and dialing it up to 11 with some modern tweaks.

It's a game that ravishes in its excessive indulgence. Indeed it could be considered borderline pornographic in its unfiltered display of intensely gratuitous demon-slaying. It's a commitment I can respect. I love when a game just knows what it is and uncompromisingly embraces it without regard for questions like "have we maybe gone a little too far here?" It's the purest expression of art.

And yet when it comes down to it, DOOM 2016 feels like a clashing mix of modern AAA production values paired with dated retro shooter gameplay. So dated in fact, that it doesn't even so much as include a reload button. I can excuse no iron sights or regenerating health; hell, I even like the fact that you have to slay more demons for health pickups. It fits with the general premise of the game in encouraging Doom Guy to murder as many demons as possible, but here's the thing folks. Early shooters didn't include a reload mechanic only because at the time there was just no other frame of reference. "First person shooter" wasn't even a genre back then. Nobody knew what the f*ck they were doing; they were just mimicking Wolfenstein 3D because that was the only thing they had to go off of. It wasn't some deliberate design choice because they genuinely thought it would make the game more fun. It simply wasn't a feature because no one thought to include it before.

At the time, the simple act of shooting things in a vaguely 3D-looking environment was innovative enough in itself. But we are now long past these times. As soon as reloading began to be included in games like Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark, the genie was out of the bottle. All first person shooters must have reloading now. It just feels so satisfying as a way to cap off your carnage after unloading a good clip on a horde of baddies. It adds a nice element of tactics to the otherwise mindless shooting by making you consider when it's a good time to take cover and restock your clip. It's such a small thing, and yet it feels so essential now. I feel naked without it, and found myself constantly switching weapon mods unintentionally because I thought I was pressing the reload button only to remember that the game doesn't freaking have reloading! I just can't fathom why Bethesda opted to omit this simple mechanic; it was purely a nostalgic move that ultimately exposes DOOM 2016's central flaw.

It seems as if the lukewarm reception of DOOM 3 caused the developers to retreat to safety with the familiar. Rather than recognizing what elements of nostalgia actually make sense to take from the classics, they just went all in on completely copy-pasting classic DOOM without any attempt to modernize the formula beyond purely cosmetic changes. But without the charm of the sprite-based pixel art, it just ends up coming off kind of generic and bland; creating this weird double standard for me. Even though I love classic DOOM, as soon as you start presenting me with modern shiny graphics, I expect more from your level design, storytelling, and mechanics to match it. Especially after I recently completed Black Mesa; a fantastic remake of Half-Life 1 that modernizes the game in all the right ways. DOOM 2016 feels all the more hollow and disappointing by comparison.

Where DOOM does try to innovate, it actually makes the gameplay worse. The new melee attack mechanics get in the way of the pacing, as instead of being just a stylish option in your toolkit of carnage, it's pretty much mandatory as the main means of replenishing your health, and the health of all demons has been padded out so that you can rarely kill them in 1 or 2 shots, encouraging fists instead.

Consequently the gameplay boils down to running through very samey-looking corridors and arenas blasting armies of very samey-looking fleshy demons, and that is the totality of its gameplay loop from start to finish. No varied puzzles, no intriguing storytelling, no inviting locales that encourage exploration; that's just it. Everything is soundly-implemented on a technical level; it's just not very interesting. If this was all Bethesda had in mind, then they should have just gone the extra mile and returned to retro graphics too while they were at it. At least then the demon-slaying could feel satisfying again as you watch them explode into a pile of red pixels. Go play Brutal Doom instead.

Doom is a action-packed, gut-spillin', bloodfest of a game that constantly makes you feel like a badass. Although killing demons is super fun and never gets old, the gameplay loop is very repetitive and feels like a constant fetch-quest.

Doom is a good reboot of the franchise. Great gameplay is marred by a very dull level design for the second half of the entire game. And some replayability is questionable.

Still a good game to check out if you dont like fps

    Doom

    Positives
    -Amazing graphics
    -Great gameplay

    Negatives
    -Zero story
    -Zero character
-Towards the end the gameplay felt repetetive.

I know I shouldn't have expected some complex story and characters but at least on a basic level they could have done something but the gameplay felt really good.

Expand

DOOM was a very solid return for the franchise but the game in its core feels very retro and like the originals, as a modern shooter DOOM lacks some very important elements like a intriguing story, variety, decent multiplayer experience (i'm not saying modern shooter should have multi-player but if it does it should be at least decent and DOOM's multiplayer wasn't in my opinion) and someDOOM was a very solid return for the franchise but the game in its core feels very retro and like the originals, as a modern shooter DOOM lacks some very important elements like a intriguing story, variety, decent multiplayer experience (i'm not saying modern shooter should have multi-player but if it does it should be at least decent and DOOM's multiplayer wasn't in my opinion) and some other things but this game can be a delicious fps ride for old-fashioned fps gamers like me, so in many ways DOOM doesn't innovate but it certainly catches the eye in certain aspects like music and gameplay. Really enjoyable game that is such a breath of fresh air in terms of the FPS space. Especially when it came out back in 2016 the FPS genre had become very very stale. Solid shooter that has so much identity and personality that doesn't take itself too seriously. Can recommend it to almost anyone

The game is very fun, but i wished it had more missions, and more instances where you get flooded with enemies, so you can unleash hell on them. Also they should have made the possibility to have a lot more ammo than you can currently have. The older Dooms were fun for this reason, but here you'll have to keep switching weapons as the inventory doesn't let you carry that much.

Just text (crutch) to save the game to the list. Such things. Maybe I'll do a review later.

If you miss Doom, you miss what I anticipate to be one of two most important first person shooters of 2016. The classic returns in great shape, with all its vital elements intact. Give the campaign some time to pick up speed and it will pump your veins full of adrenaline. [07/2016, p.38]
