This is about a 7/8 score, good single player game old school style. I have given a 10 to counter act the absolute idiots who give it a 0. Nothing is worth a 0. The most honest Doom review from a long time Doom-er. I've played every variant of Doom, Quake and Unreal. Essentially Doom 2016 is Quake with a Doom layer of paint. This game has always been about mindless killing. What little story there is, is not bad. This game is fast paced run and gun DO NOT sit still. This isn't Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny etc. This is a run-n-gun or die trying game.

Doom 1 & 2 games were pretty straight forward. Walk into a room full of Hell and kill it all. There were some puzzle aspects to it.
Doom 32x was basically the same
Doom 64 took that same approach and tried to add a linear story to it.
Doom 3 turned to a darker story with a linear story which most were not a fan of but i thoroughly enjoyed.
Doom 2016 is a basically a buffet of all of those things. There is the linear story and you will walk into an area where all hell breaks loose and you must survive to move on to the next area.

If you're looking for a gorgeous fast-paced shooter that doesn't require thought process to comprehend whats going on but want a challenge staying alive this game is for you. Its a nice change of pace from "camping".

They don't tend to make half-baked games and when I saw the gloriously gruesome reveal footage for it, I pre-ordered it on Steam almost straight away!

Let's cut to the bit that you'll be wanting to read: I’m pleased to say that the new DOOM is utterly, utterly outstanding. It plays somewhat like the original game, but it’s been brought bang up to date and feels like it’s been to the gym and pumped up on steroids and it’s refreshing to see that Id Software have eschewed the usual route of using cut-scenes in the new DOOM - it just drops you right in the action without so much as an introduction and the story (what there is of it) unfolds as you play the game.

All of the demonic foes from the originals are present and correct have been brought up to date and imbued with new abilities. The lowly imps that used to simply be bullet fodder, for example, are now cunning little buggers that constantly leap around and try to flank or get behind you at every opportunity – they also try to get up to high ground so that they can sling fireballs at you from above. Thankfully, you have that classic arsenal of weapons at your disposal, all of which are fun to use and have some superb new abilities – and can I hear a ‘Hell Yeah’ for the return of the double-barrelled super-shotgun from Doom2? Everything from the pistol all the way through to the BFG are upgradable via weapon tokens that can be picked up after killing waves of enemies or completing special challenges, and these upgrades unlock each weapon’s secondary fire mode which are useful when dealing with the bigger and tougher demons later in the game. There are two upgrades per weapon which, once selected, reveal branches of additional upgrades that can be unlocked to increase the weapon’s power and efficiency. It’s not just the weapons that are upgradable either – your suit can be beefed up to make you tougher, stronger and faster and there are options to increase your health, armour and ammo capacity – so the potential to customise your weapons and abilities to your liking should significantly increase the game’s replay value.

The original DOOM games were famously gruesome, and it should come as no surprise that the new game is breathtakingly, grimace-inducing and absurdly ultraviolent! You can choose the normal route of turning your demonic foes into a red smoosh by blasting them at point-blank range or you can soften them with a couple of blasts and look out for them stumbling around with a blue glow around them, which means that you can use the new ‘glory kill’ ability on them. This is basically a quick close-range execution move which in some cases must be performed to dispose of the tougher enemies, particularly if you’ve ran out of ammo and are shooting at them with the pistol. Rather usefully, performing a glory kill also causes them to drop medipacks and a small amount of ammo, so you’ll find yourself doing them frequently to keep your health topped up. If you run out of ammo however, you’ll find yourself whipping out the good old chainsaw and it’s of course the case that when using this that you’ll see the game’s most gruesome sights as you literally cut them in half! It’s not just violence for violence’s sake however as chainsaw kills cause lots of ammo to be dropped, so you’ll find yourself using it fairly often.

It would be unfair not to mention DOOM’s visuals as they are absolutely spectacular. I’ve found myself gawping about at the surroundings, particularly in the outdoor areas of Mars and (not really a spoiler) when I’ve been in Hell as they’re absolutely stunning to behold – the lighting, particle and shadow effects are in some cases mind-blowingly cool. It does however help that I’ve got a machine that’s capable of playing the game at ‘Ultra’, so things do really look very nice indeed – but it should look great even if you’ve got a slightly older machine and have to dial the settings down a little.

Special mention also needs to go to the sound and particularly the music in DOOM as if you’re a lover of Metal, you’re going to find the soundtrack very enjoyable indeed. It’s very broody and almost sounds like Nine Inch Nails in the quieter bits, but when you’re getting attacked from all sides by demons, it whips up into a full on industrial metal riff-fest and I’ve seriously found myself gently moshing while playing! It’s seriously good and adds another level of brilliance to the game.

Summing up, I think that Id Software have seriously outdone themselves here and have delivered a game the exceeded my expectations by some degree. It’s fun, loud, brutal and brash and deserves your attention!

Doom brings a smile to my face each time I load it up. The run and gun shoot em up theme style is alive and kickin in this new version, the graphics are awesome, the demon kills are great and the endless amount of ammo and gunfire just keeps me saying "Hell yea, that was awesome"
The single player aspect of the game is fantastic, you have the core level experience with the rock and roll style kill em all action packed areas of each map, If you have played the older dooms you know exactly what im talking about, in many aspects I feel as if i'm playing Quake instead of Doom. Hands down the single player lives up to what I was expecting out of this game

    HOWEVER
The multiplayer is a puke pile waiting to be set on fire and never touched again
Simply put they shouldn't have even released the multiplayer
Its extremely fast paced with a lot of bunny jumping and running around like old school Unreal Tournament but half the fun. Multiplayer is a sad excuse for trying to merge Call of Duty style fast paced run and gun with Unreal Tournament style maps and weaponry #megafail on the multiplayer aspect
    #winning on the single player

It goes without saying, one should take these kinds of heavily biased neg reviews with a grain of salt.

No matter what the devs did with this Doom the people/kids are always going to complain and complain and complain. They seem to completely forget (or have never played) what the classic doom was all about. A gritty fast action shooter.

IMO this is a great version of a classic. We'll never again achieve the greatness of the original in a remake, because it was the original; just like we'll never see another CoD as great as MW. You want to chase the feeling of the old classic? Then play the old classic....it's old and horrible to look at but the appeal lies in the nostalgia of 20+ years ago. Doom has never been about deep story. Its a hardcore shooter. Period. THIS IS DOOM for our modern age. Do yourself a big favour and try it out. Heck even wait for a sale if you're unsure as either way its a great revamped classic and killer shooter that's definitely worth playing. I loved Doom 3 and this new Doom is no exception. Loving it.

DOOM's fantastic environments all look and play beautifully smooth even on my aging system.

Got very tiresome after a while. Controls are a bit off. They feel very fluid but a little floaty with no sprint button. Can you believe that? It's tough to navigate around some of the faster moving demons and the stupid small sections they throw you in to fight them. They should have added sprint and some open area levels to make full use of the weapons because most enemies just rush you all the time.

Visually it's superb like some of the UAC facility levels, weapons, few enemy designs (revenant, the undead and cacodemon being the only ones that stood out), and slick menu presentation. Loading times are ridiculous. Audio is hit and miss. Sound effects are good but some of the gun sounds and explosions are weak. Had to crank my volume a little bit. They nailed the music which is constantly there sometimes subtlety or full force.

A sequel or DLC needs to add more variety (Phobos and Deimos?) because it was overall missing something I can't quite put my finger on? It badly needed something fresh because it all felt too mundane. It needs a story that isn't a rehash. It basically is a remake of Doom 3. That's not to say it sucks. It was a blast to play but too arcade-ish and similar for me. Worth a rental or pick it up when it drops to $20.

This DOOM is excelent, the guns, the demons, the level design, the movement, and the guns power are the combination of good FPS. The difficulty is excelent, is very hard and most exciting to play. The ejecution of knocks to finish the demon are good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game tastes like a cocktail of the original doom, quake, unreal tournament and shadow warrior. The hidden classic levels are so reminiscent of my childhood. Graphics, AI, movement, badass weapon all deserve a great deal of admiration.
The only things that appear somewhat lackluster are music and boss fight. There doesn't seem to be a soundtrack as impressive as in the old doom. The boss fight is not quite necessary. Cyberdemon and mastermind should have been mingled with other monsters. I really want to see (1) cyberdemon ruthlessly **** on a horde of barons of hell or fatso mancubuses and (2) cyberdemon vs mastermind. Besides, cyberdemon is the incarnation of all evils in doom and he should have been the final boss.

The most boring FPS in a long while. The action is too far between all the puzzles and platform jumping. When I do encounter monsters they are indistinguishable with each other and ridiculously easy to kill. Weapons feel too weak.

I’m hooked ever since, so let’s just say I know my stuff.

    How wrong I was!
I can’t remember last time I enjoyed a game that much.
It’s (almost) brainless, brutal butchery, for the most part, but hell, isn’t that one of the things that computer gaming is all about?

Thanks Bethesda, for restoring my faith into ‘reboots’ of legendary titles.

This iteration has a bunch of customization aspects as well which gave it almost a DeadSpace Downfall feel as you upgraded your suit and modified your weapons. The new rpg and customization elements fit well in the structure of the game, adding just enough depth to be interesting and impact-full but not enough to be an awful mini-game chore in and of itself (cough garrisons cough). I had really high hopes for this game being such an esteemed franchise and such an esteemed development company finally getting a crack at this classic game. Expand

Thank god id software understood this and gave us a wonderful campaign.A brutal journey filled with monster s and cool demons, and you can crush them with your powerful weapons and badass melee kills.
Some players hate the multiplayer PVP,I love it,reminds me of the old school unreal tournament arena shooter. And become a demon in the multiplayer is always fun.
But the best part must be the Snapmap mode, totally awesome. You can play some kickass custom map here, from boss fights map to co-op waves map,you can find every thing here. You can even make your own map from the map creater. You will spend countless hours with your friends in this mode.

An utterly brilliant homage to the old school FPS. This is quintessential Doom, updated for the modern times without forgetting what it is and where it came from. Kinetic, visceral, and impactful, DOOM delivers a delightful punch to the teeth to remind audiences what a shooter is supposed to be.

In DOOM, game-play comes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And by game-play I mean gun-play and by gun-play I mean HOLY HELL these are some fantastic weapons! Shooting is fast-paced and fun. Strafing, circling, closing in for for a melee kill, I found myself constantly staying on the move to avoid enemy fire and the game rewarding me for a clever and aggressive play-style. Nearly all weapons have two different upgrade paths that you can switch up on the fly and not a single one isn't satisfying to use. Ammo is plentiful but not plentiful enough that you won't be swapping out your weapons regularly, and the increasing variety of enemies that require different approaches and tactics means you can't get comfortable with just one or two guns to see you through the day. The games signature "glory kills" are fast and satisfying, requiring you to "stun" your enemies with well placed gun fire first before closing in to finish them off. Each glory kill you pull off rewards you with extra health, a great little risk/reward mechanic that keeps the pace of the fight up and never sees you retreating from an enemy in search of more health. The chainsaw and BFG are perfectly implemented as well, incredibly over-powered one-hit-kill weapons with very limited ammo meaning you'll need to carefully consider when to break them out but always incredibly rewarding when you do.

Each level in DOOM is expansive and labyrinthine, as any good DOOM level worth it's salt should be. This ain't no corridor shooter, and you are encouraged to explore each environment thoroughly to discover all of the hidden secrets and unlockables this game has to offer. Traversing the environments is fast and fluid. You move at a satisfying clip and incorporate a clamber and, later, a double jump to navigate the large, vertical spaces.

A point against DOOM could be it's rather weak and generic story. If you're looking for a world deep with lore then you might be satisfied by what is on offer through the collectible journal entries that flesh out the UAC and their Mars research facility, but the pretty intriguing idea of a corporation-turned-cult is barely explored. Arguably, focusing more on the story might have taken away from the game-play, which is DOOM's obvious first priority, but I did sometimes find myself wishing I had a bit more motivation than DEMONS: KILL.

Another definite negative is DOOM's multiplayer offering, which feels very tacked on and is entirely forgettable. All of the kinetic energy and adrenaline found in the single player game is absent here. This is where the description "mindless shooter" fits perfectly, where not even a respectable variety of game modes can keep it from feeling wholly shallow and lifeless. DOOM's multiplayer is a temporary distraction to be played once and then never picked up again.

But, despite these faults, in the end the game is just too much fun and I have so much praise for what it does do that it is hard to fault it for what it doesn't. DOOM is an incredibly refreshing return to form and has re-energized my enthusiasm for genre that has been, in my opinion, languishing for years, bereft of any originality and becoming stale and stagnant in the process. DOOM remembers that FPS's don't need to be a dreary slog nor do they need to take themselves seriously or rely on scripted set pieces to be incredible experiences. DOOM is a must buy for any shooter fan.

Obviously, the mass majority of them are either people who have never played the original Doom games, and know nothing of what the original is about, and the other half are the purists, who say the game is too slow and that it's not a carbon copy of the original, so it sucks. Because innovation is bad, right? Now, there is also a small crowd who haven't played the first 2 games, but have played Doom 3, which was totally a deviation from the originals, and was poorly received on a whole. This is also a crowd that has never watched the e3 demo, or any of the videos released prior to launch, they were just like "oh hey I remember that game it was really scary." and was shocked when they found out "hey this isn't scary, 0/10." Another common complaint is that the game is repetitive, which is complete bs. This game has a massive load of replay value, due to the 5 difficulty levels and the numerous upgrades and weapon mods available. I completed my first playthrough on ultra-violence (hard), and my second playthrough on nightmare (very hard), and I'm currently attempting ultra-nightmare (1 death and it's game over.) And this game is STILL extremely fun. I don't get how anybody could not have fun with this amazing piece of artwork. Now, another thing I commonly see (mainly on steam reviews, but on here as well,) are people who have played 10-30 minutes of the game, and then leave a 0/10 score and refund the game. To which I have to say, did you really even play the game? You can't even complete the first mission in 30 minutes, much less actually try the multiplayer, or snapmap. These are people who just want to hate on the game because they think it's cool to do so. Not actual Doom fans, just casuals. Second, this game is MADE for PC. There are so many graphics settings, and the game is so well optimized that I can run it on my laptop, which has a GTX 960m in it, which is a horrible horrible low grade chip, in 720p 60fps. On my main rig I play 1440p, 120 fps. Yeah, it's really, really well optimized, which is amazing considering how AWESOME this game's graphics are. So please, ignore the hate reviews and just try the game for yourself. If you're a fan of the originals, you'll have a blast! Expand

I actually really like the weapons, despite some of the minor gripes I've read on here about them not being "bass-y" enough. The alternate fire is fun, and I love the ease of being able to switch in between 'em o the fly. The variety is spot-on, and plays a strategy on how you tackle the field of monsters. The weapon unlocks, coupled with the challenges, keep me cycling through my arsenal in order to try new things--it also encourages you to perceive each battle with a different strategy.

The real show-stealer, however, is the crafty level design; coupled with the themes and atmosphere. You truly feel you're on Mars/Hell . It's incredible. I find myself in awe of the draw distance, looking at the terrain and action in the far background.

I rented my copy via recd box, but this game warrants a purchase, no questions asked. I would've bought but I don't have the $ right now...

    * The enemy attacks (AI) are more than a little dumb so far. You can easily get them to follow you and just pummel them while running backwards.
    * It feels a bit like a COD version of Doom.
    * I swear I saw some typos in the text placeholders.
    * If I used the gamma slider in the way the game tells me to, I would be able to see basically nothing of note - so Ignore that, IMHO.
    * Weapons fire isn't amazingly accurate... it almost feels like it was made to be slightly forgiving if you were to play in using a gamepad. Not that I am.
    * I have already got trapped in a couple of locations (foundry, in between a couple of metal bars, to mention one) and had to restart.
    * It definitely is mindless and requires very little thought. Just follow the lights and you will advance in your game.
    * Health popping out of beings you kill by hand... what is that all about?!?!?!
    * Personally, I cant stand chosen level ups and skill customisation.
    * Some of the "sparks" look like flying pixels and nothing more.

    The things I like:
    * The game is a smooth as silk and has no frame judder or other textural oddities.
    * The level design isn't that bad. It is just a shame that it is so linear.
    * The ability to climb a little is nice - although goes against physics a lot of the time.
    * Still a better love story that Twilight.

Visuals are outstanding, sound is on point, and performance on my system is very good. I've even been enjoying the multiplayer quite a bit which was the biggest surprise for me. It has been polished quite a bit since beta and has a great arena-style feel to it with modern mechanics thrown in as well. There will of course be the die hard arena shooter fans that don't enjoy it because it's not as fast as they might have expected and the loadout system instead of strictly pickup weapon gameplay, but I think it works pretty well. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This looks and feels like a real successor to the 23-year-old Doom. Forget Doom 3 and its rewriting the rule book, this game goes back to basics and does it in style.

The core gameplay is exactly the same as it was in the original - large, rambling maps chopped up into different areas, with coloured keycards and switches (along with "rip the arm off some guy" type updates - essentially, following the Doom Bible from 1992!)

All the weapons you'd expect are there and although there are all sorts of extra customisation options you don't have to use them; you can use number buttons to select the weapons (5 is still the rocket launcher, just as it was in the original) and unlike the multiplayer mode you can carry several at once.

The action is fast, it's furious and as gory as ever (gibbing enemies never looked so good). There have been some mechanic changes (as in the chainsaw uses fuel and grants ammo when you chainsaw a monster to death), but the overall look and feel is unmistakeably Doom.

As someone who played the original and Doom 2 to death as a teenager, words can't explain how delighted I am to see the game brought bang up-to-date. As an added bonus, after pulling a certain lever I found a direct passageway back to a (somewhat clunky) chunk of the original Doom... complete with bitmap pickup icons and the original soundtrack, as played on a decent MIDI card. Yes, the textures were wonky, there were no lighting effects (it's darned hard to do with modern engines, the Doom engine was much simpler) but wow, it was nice to see. It also carries on the tradition from Doom 2, which had a Wolfenstein 3D level in it...

The deathmatch side of things is expanded greatly from the beta and the matchmaking system is fair - if you get pummelled and everyone's up for another match, it'll swap players around to make things more equal. It feels quite cut-down compared to the single-player mode, what with the loadouts and all, but it's not a bad game - feels more like Quake 3 than the original Doom, however.

I'd say this is a really, really good single-player shooter - it's a true sequel to one of the best-loved PC games of all time. The deathmatch side of things isn't quite as good, IMO, but I bought this game for the single-player game. Several hours in, I'm not disappointed.

THIS IS NOT Ride to Hell or Big Rigs; just **** off and go play Call of Duty or some **** And yeah, I might be a hypocrite for doing the exact opposite, but really, I don't give a **** what you think :)

After playing the single player campaign I have to say that it's been a long time since I had that ''classic FPS'' feel, I wouldn't say it's a pure Doom sequel though, because it borrows elements from other classic shooters as well (you decide which ones those are), with just a few more modern features like upgrades and runes. The graphics look amazing (even if my hardware is below the recommended requirements, I was able to play on high with very few slowdowns), the pace is just right and the gore is simply orgasmic! (I can see that they've been watching Brutal Doom haha).

This Doom proves to me that you CAN succesfully combine classic and modern elements into a pure FPS, and after the disappointment that was Duke Nukem Forever, I'm VERY happy about that.

Conclusion: A straightforward, no bull**** and fast-paced arcade shooting experience worth checking out for yourself! (this goes for the single player only, haven't played any multiplayer yet)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think its absolutely amazing so far, probably the most fun i've had playing a single player campaign game since Doom3 which i recently completed and FC3... Game play wise its really fast paced, in saying that you can slow the action down by being selective as to your movements, e.g. taking things out from a far - which is a little difficult with the initial pistol and laterly the shotty. There's a lot of action, even with the medium difficulty setting 'hurt me plenty'. The game Its linear, as you'd expect but there's more hidden stuff and mini missions within the main missions. Theres a whole host of power ups for the suit and now for the guns - just received a explosive shell upgrade to my shotgun. The pistol is pretty much ineffective - good for getting the possessed to a stunned state so you can use the melee and the trusty shotty is quick loading and carrys 20 shells max meaning you're often on the look out for more ammo. The melee strikes have little cut scenes ani's as you've probably seen in the videos leading up to teh release - you get more power ups for doing such melee attacks and the variation of how they're pulled of hasnt gotten old, yet.. So far i've come across two new types of enemy character - the possessed -which are as you'd expect the staff from UAC wondering around like zombies from dayz and these engineer type people who've got welding bottles stuck in them, which blow up nicely.... Its graphically stunning, i knew id was great at optimizing games, in fact it's the primary reason Doom was so successful and able to played by so many people, so it's in their blood. Good to see that part is still around. I never expected to play this game so well though on my hardware. With everything cranked up @ 2560x1440 @ ultra and full AA im getting about 50-62 fps on my 980ti, so its coping... I'm finding it quite hard going on the eyes at the moment, the amount of different light sources and brightness in the game generally is in stark contrast to D3, but this is a differently themed animal so far... The graphics are alright but beware that if you are not running high end hardware you will have to turn them down to the point where they look like a 10 year old game and is still jittery which is quite disappointing. Seems very badly optimized but could be Nvidia drivers.

So to recap, the game is fun and feels like a true doom (unlike doom 3) and is worth around €30, but I would not advise paying more than €40 for this.

Doom is exactly what you would expect form it, a fast paced, ultra violent, metal shooter. There is no sprinting or aiming downsights like in modern games, hell there isn't even a plot, just a cool mix of science and occultism (like those scientists were studying the hell to gain energy from it or something? It's super crazy and cool non the less!). You're running around from one goryDoom is exactly what you would expect form it, a fast paced, ultra violent, metal shooter. You're running around from one gory fight to another, collecting upgrades, ammo, health, shields and collectables, the levels are changing consistently between the material world (facility) and hell, while the game throws new type of monsters and ways to deal with them (weapons) at the player in almost every single map.

11/10 Gore - the violence is DELICIOUS, and detailed
    10/10 Graphics are top notch
10/10 Animations are very fast and aesthetic, lots of eyecandy, but won't hurt the flow of the game
8/10 Music - nice metal music, could have been a bit heavyer/louder sometimes (at least in my book)
8/10 Performance: 4-5 times the game dropped to 45fps for a couple of seconds in some of the heavyer fights in larger rooms, otherwise 60+ on Ultra with gtx780ti, i7, 16gb, 1 crash in 9h of gameplay

The only thing that really bugs me out is the lenght of the campaign, I needed only 9h to complete the game on normal difficulty (died a couple of times, definitive a challange on higher difficultys), but I need to mention that I rushed through the game and didn't payed too much attention to all the secrets and collectibles.
You can't skip the 20second intro for whatever reason, and there is no music in the menue which is a bit odd. Also you have to restart the game whenever you change from campaign to multiplayer or snapmap.

Doom is a yet again very polished game from Bethesda. For everyone out there searching for a simple (but challenging) ultra violent, metal shooter, you just found it.

This game did not innovate anything, instead it seemed to have gone back to the roots. It's funny how much that actually makes Doom stand out from all the other current gen shooters, who all seem to follow the same trends.

It really paid off as, this Doom is the most fun shooter I have played in many, many years.

Fantastic reboot of the original. A lot better than doom 3. Not a bunch of doing mindless stupid things to get to the next area. Just kill stuff like the original. If you are more of a modern FPS fan with the two gun limit and waiting in the corner to restore life then you might want to give this a 6 or 7. However, it is nice to go back to fps roots and just kill things.

I really don't think it has much in common with the over produced CoD and Battlefield games. Here's a list of some of the parallels I see with Metroid Prime 3.. there are actually more.. I just don't wanna sit here thinking of them all.

Unlimited ammo(for the most part just use your chainsaw when needed)
Weapon & Armor Upgrades hidden within the progress of the game's levels.
    Right click charge style shots.
Science Fiction Planet Base gone horribly wrong environment.
Arena style battles guarding key spots during events in the game.
It even has codex lore hidden within the levels as well... which tells the horrible history the environment went through.

Runs perfect 90+ FPS at near all times on a ..5820k ..16GB ..GTX970 ..1080p/144hz which is seriously around the sweet spot in PC gaming specs right now.

It does have collision detection problems ever so often where you get stuck or caught on environmental objects when trying to fly around the levels ever so often. Probably more of a feature of single player than anything, because of the detail they added to the levels.

I'll be playing Overwatch Multilayer more than this, but this game's single player seriously has a double play through potential! Especially since this game has really good tweaked difficulty.

The world was due for this style of game!

As with all negative reviews I'm sure this one will be quickly voted down by the paid tro##s that lurk here. I purposely misspelled that word to avoid getting reported for abuse as my last review that stated similar was reported for using the word weir#o. Seriously Metacritic how do you not know this?

Doom isn't a terrible game, it's just a boring FPS with nothing revolutionary or even interesting. I'm actually so unimpressed I don't even want to write a review. I just want to complain about Bethesda paying people to tro## Metacritic and giving this game a 10 out of 10.

Although this game is a bit different as it seems even the paid reviewers don’t want to rate this game at release. Bethesda is quickly using up its creditably capital. Fallout 4 was probably their last great cash grab. The next Elder Scrolls better knock the socks off the world because you won’t get away with this garbage a third time. Funny how the mighty gets greedy and destroys the heart and soul of what made them great, talent.

I understand the criticism that this game may be "too much" like the old school fps genre, and I think SOME modern improvements to certain things would have helped, but would have been hard to do without screwing up the whole "old school" feel. I am getting the feeling that the vast majority of the people giving negative reviews have not actually played the first two DOOM games! The people giving this game a 0 just to bring down the score need to be stopped. About half of the time playing, I have no idea where to go or what the hell I am supposed to do. In this one part, you have to use a hand you found for an ID scanner, which opens a door blocked by fire to fight one of those things you rip the heart out of. However, I swear I never saw the ID scanner when I tried finding it. After quitting the game and going back to the same area, THEN I see it. I wonder if this is a glitch because I spent nearly 30 minutes trying to find the damn thing. However, those are my only complaints. The gameplay is extremely fun, where you shoot a demon a bit and then crush, smash, or rip off his head. It feels so satisfying, as well as extremely gory. I have not touched multiplayer, but from what I played from the beta, it seems like it will be something that most may ignore or may only try for a few minutes. I have no idea what snapmap is, so my review is basically single player. I am not trying to be funny when I say within 20 seconds of starting the game, you are given a gun and are fighting demons. This game is extremely fast paced, except in for some moments. Also, DO NOT bother with walkthroughs. Remember about the ID from earlier, I never found that part. The maps are amazingly well designed and complex like old Doom - /when it comes to looking for secrets/ - but take note, they are not complex in terms of knowing where to go, finding keys and remembering where the respective coloured door is like in old Doom. Fights are much more 'locked in arena' based unlike old Doom, where you're free to roam and kill whatever. I can forgive it for its disguised linearity, because the combat, graphics and sound are amazing. I just wish they'd done more 'door hunting'. but apart from that - amazing game and an excellent challenge on Ultra Violence. There are perks too, yes guys you get perks which give you ability to know where all secrets are etc and most of the pickups come only through glorykilling and thus game forces you to glorykill. Forexample
ammo is ridiciolously low (20 max for shotgun) and this forces the player to use glorykill system to get more ammo. You can't fail in this game since the AI enemies are dead stupid and just stand still when you shoot them. You have a locked door in your face and the keycard is "hidden" right 100 meters next to it in a oneway cave. Seriously?

Doom is a very fine shooter. It's game-play is in some places a hark to the past, but freshened up. There is no cover mechanics and no reload. It's twitch, select weapon move, shoot and select finishers (to keep up health and ammo). The whole things is lazed with not-so-subtle aggression and stomping pissed of music, so you end up as a furious one-man demon genocide. There's a story, but you can show it the middle-finger if you want.

I suspect for Doom-fans this game is near perfect, and for me it is certainly an excellent leap away from silly cover-based action and the slowness of the typical modern shooter.

You also get fairly big maps and key cards. Yep, this is no corridor shooter like the (otherwise) excellent Shadow Warrior remake. This is big hurrah to the old days, when you had to do a little thinking between the bouts.

    A very nice game indeed.

A much better version of Doom compared to Doom 3. Doom 3 tried to be too scary. It was kind of the thing to do with shooters at the time. There are secrets, just like in the original, and I never thought I would enjoy collecting such stupid little figures before. There are little doom dolls, kind of like Funko POPs on each level, and when you find it, a little clip of the old dooms music plays. Puts a smile on my face everytime.

There are also hidden parts of the original levels of doom in each level. You have to find a hidden lever, switch it and a wall or unique looking door will open. Its really is well thought out. they seem to progress down the original lvls as you progress down the levels in this doom.

Im not positive, but I believe this is how you unlock the old doom levels. I had the option to play the hanger level after I found one. Was quiet a bit of fun. remembering old secrets and completing it.

I've only played about 3 hours of the 13 hour campaign but it has been very entertaining. One big grip I have is there seems to be no way to fast switch between weapons on the same key. for example the pistol and chainsaw are both set to the 1 key. You hit it once, and you get the pistol, hit it again and you get the chainsaw. I thought you could maybe just double tap the key to get the second weapon, but you have to hit one, wait for it to cycle to the pistol then hit one again to cycle to the chainsaw, for a fast paced shoot em up this seems wrong. Maybe I am just missing a quick key. the plasma rifle and the chaingun are also both on the 4 key.

I have yet to try the multiplayer, but its probably not going to be my thing. I really just wanted the nostalgia of a good doom. The multiplayer looks to be more like Quake Arena.

The combat is epic with vast amounts of weapons to choose from as well as enemy that will challenge you (if you are not playing on easy mode of course). The multiplayer is fun as well, it's more skill based than your average CoD or Halo but it does have it unique twist on it. Here is a short summery of the game.

    Single player
    Pro:
+ Length (took me 10h without 100% completion on hard difficulty)
+ Combat it will keep you engaged
    + Puzzle/labyrinth like level design
+ Secret that actually benefit you
+ Option to upgrade you arsenal without pushing/forcing you in to it
+ Good enemy progression, as you progress through the game demons come in more and bigger variety.
+ Glory kills do not slow down the paste of the game even if you chain them. Quick fast and satisfying.
    + Weapon arsenal is massive
    + Bosses are FUN!

    Cons:
    - Size of enemy demons could be bigger
    - On nightmare difficulty instead of giving demons more HP+DAM they should of increased the amount with much faster demon progression. Like getting 1 pinky on the first demon arena
    - Bodies teleport away a bit too fast. While I do understand why they need to teleport away it would be nice to have option for PC to keep them permanently or increase duration.

    Multiplayer
    Pro:
+ A bit more casual and relaxed compared to other games that are out there
+ There is a competitive mode
+ Glory kills feel fantastic after you work a guy for a while
+ Demons runs are fun and easy to counter
+ Loadouts(it's a plus because it allows new players be introduced in to the genre)

    Cons:
    - No music, which is odd, doom has the music but for some reason they cut it out of multi which is just odd. Hopefully will be patched in as an option at least
    - No detailed server browser, it would be nice to have it so that people can connect to a lower ping games.
    - Hit detection, sometimes you get hit and you don't even notice it or getting hit around the corner.

Over all a solid 10 for me because I just cannot stop having fun. It's something that was long overdue. I got 15h in to the game so far and planning on having many more.

Old school demon shooting madness. Even if for the single-player experience, the game is worth its price. It's awesome. Similar to the new Wolfenstein games, but doesn't pretend to have an ambitious story.

The story is not bad so far, admittedly I'm a only a couple hours in, but I consider the plot as a bonus as I didn't think think the reboot would bother with much of narrative. Also, I love the sound effects, a nice tight/dry sound which was a good audio aesthetic choice.

It maybe should be a solid 8, but I'm giving it an extra point out of relief from the bad feeling I had after the multiplayer beta.

Only one largish criticism is it doesn't feel very scary - I thought the original Doom/Doom II had genuinely eerie atmospheres (but I was 14 when Doom II was released, it was a simpler time in 1994), and also Doom 3 was pretty scary. This new Doom doesn't really have that (not yet anyway).

The negative reviews are funny - "you just go around punching demons". Yep, and it feels facking great.

Doom (2016) is the successor to the good ol' Doom of 1993 - if you're after the 'survival horror' of Doom 3, this ain't it - that was never the point of the series. If you're going to hold the game to the standard of a sequel that shared nothing with it's predecessors, of course you're going to be annoyed. You're also going to be wrong. [...strange how they re-titled from Doom 4.]

    Here's the long and short of it;

    - The single player campaign is a solid 12 hours on a reasonable difficulty and without going out of your way to find all the secrets or collectables. That says nothing about completing it on higher difficulties, or with permadeath enabled (so tack on another 12+ hours).

    - The gameplay is fast as anything, it rewards you for keeping up momentum and has so many small mechanics that help ensure you're constantly on the go. The chainsaw's been given an overhaul to make it into a limited use weapon that replenishes your ammunition, and the finishing 'Glory Kills' give you back health, it just works.

    - The progression/customisation is pretty engaging without being an obstruction to shooting things. Almost every weapon has two modifications, each modification has three additional upgrades, and once you've unlocked all the upgrades - you're given a 4th 'Mastery' upgrade that rewards you for getting neat kills (double-kills with single shots, locking on to targets who can teleport...)

    - You've got an awesome array of Collectables, Secrets, and Codex entries that give you an insight into the storyline, without having it rammed down your throat through cutscenes or hindering the player. They've hidden a level of the original Doom in each of the 2016 levels, grab 'em all and you've got yourself a free game. Winner.

    - Multiplayer's fine. It's tacked on, and it's nothing special - but as an added bonus for an awesome single player experience, why bother complaining? Don't like it, go play one of the million other multiplayer FPS titles you've got at your disposal. It too has a boatload of customisation and challenges, so we can add a couple more hours onto our running total.

    - The exposition of the story is flawless. Doomguy rightly remains mute across the game, but you're given such a deadpan comical insight into his mindset. The game throws you into combat within the first 30 seconds and it genuinely doesn't let up bar a couple of (one-sided) conversations. It all flows from one scene to the next, it makes perfect sense, and you really get a feel for the overarching narrative - without any of it being made painfully explicit

    - If storyline isn't your thing, there's a whole challenge system based around collecting Runes and earning Combat Rating. Runes offer you gameplay related bonuses - extra ammo drops, wider pick-up radius, while the Combat Rating gives you weapon upgrades if you're able to achieve specific criteria (Finishing a Baron of Hell with an aerial attack, for example)

Basically, and as always on this website, I've got no idea why people are rating it so low. One guy's saying this game would be better if it retailed for $10/£6...

I see his point, it would be nice (for us, probably less so for id/Bethesda), but it's a ludicrous request. If a cinema trip's gonna set you back £15 for some food and two hours of visuals - you can cough up £30 for 20 times that content.

The game's fine. It's a 9-10 if you've got nostalgia for early FPS titles, it's a 7 if you don't care for it that much, but by no means is it below a 5.

This website is living proof of why the hoi polloi can't be trusted with a mouthpiece.

That is what you're getting with Doom 2016, for good and for ill. I personally found the game very enjoyable, but it should be added that I was really wanting a fast-paced shooter that was single player and the newest game I had that was scratching that itch was Serious Sam (preceded by Painkiller). I sat down with this game and asked it to keep my pulse up and send me on a gory, exhilarating ride as I mowed down the legions of Hell. And it delivered exactly what I asked of it.

This game is a very literal translation of the earliest shooters, your Doom's, your Wolfenstein's, your Duke Nukem's. On the good side, you have the fast-paced, frantic gameplay that the old ones had, and it came up with a few ways to keep the flow going as much as possible. The weapons are viscerally fun as ever and, aside from the starting pistol, none of them are ever really useless. There is a surprisingly elaborate upgrade system added that (amongst other things) helps keep earlier weapons competitive with their late-game cousins and you're free to settle into a gameplay style that suits you. The enemies are varied (though the majority of them are familiar to those who have played any Doom games) and the game moves at a decent difficulty curve. Now, on the bad side, I can say that some weapons wind up being a little vestigial depending on your play style; the double-barrel shotgun in particular was almost unused during my playthrough. Additionally, the map design is... well it's not *bad* and you can tell where you're going, but it carries that maze-like quality that the old 2.5D shooters had, so if you don't like that you won't care much for that. Though there's a very nice degree of verticality to it. As for the gore... well it's what you'd expect--simple gratuitous violence that makes your inner thirteen year old giddy if you're into that sort of thing. Again, if you don't like gore, then don't buy this game.

Now, you may have noticed that I didn't mention the story. Well... here's the thing. For the game you have, the story is exactly what it needs to be. Set-up: you wake up chained to a sarcophagus in the midst of an invasion of Hell on Mars inside a UAC facility and it's up to you to do the cleanup job. Obviously there's a bit more to it, but it's not exactly an operatic plot... but it does what it needs to do. The thing I do like is that the few characters there are have a neat amount of characterization, there's a lot of background storytelling (particularly involving the sort of place the facility you're in and what it was like prior to getting invaded), and the Doom Marine himself has a bit of characterization. Now, when I say that, he's still a silent protagonist, but you can read a bit into his actions, little things like the way he hesitates at certain points in the plot, the sheer brutality he shows towards the demons, and the way he interacts with certain objects. The story is shallow, but it's as deep as it needs to be. It keeps the story afloat and it's enough to make you comfortable in the game world, and it succeeds at what it sets out to do.

Basically, if you want a successor to the old Doom games, you have it. If that is what you wanted, then consider this a MASSIVE recommendation, 10/10, gold star, A+. It was what I wanted, and while I'm normally an RPG guy, I still found this a fun escape from all of that. Alternatively, if you are uncertain on whether you're interested in this kind of game, I'd recommend trying Painkiller or Serious Sam 3 first to do an interest check (and potentially save money). This is a game that knows what it wants to be and hits that point with full marks. It is a game that I know not everyone would care for, but I personally loved it.

A surprisingly solid, quick paced and brutal FPS that brings something that feels new to a tired genre, even if it doesn't have a unique bone in its' body.

Doom is essentially a reboot of the legendary first game, and while fans of the original will be disappointed by changes to the health system, the pacing is very good, retaining the "move on to the next group of demons" dynamic.

Doom is essentially a reboot of the legendary first game, and while fans of the original will be disappointed by changes to the health system, the pacing is very good, retaining the "move on to the next group of demons" dynamic. There's an overfocus on melee which, while satisfyingly brutal, does become old after a while, but it still comes across as fresh just because of the abundance of drab military shooters in the market it competes with.

Surprisingly, the campaign is the best part of the game for me. Yes, a decent campaign mode in an FPS for the first time in what feels like forever! It's nothing revolutionary, and this isn't a top drawer narrative RPG experience or anything like it, but it is competent and feels like a focus has been placed on it.

Much was made about the overuse of browns and greys in the colour scheme before release, but I can confirm that the art style is good. Not great, but good. Personally, as an old Doom player, I would have appreciated a lot more colour variation and imagination, but I can understand that the era we live in doesn't make that "cool", so the art direction is what it is - nothing special, but passable, despite some low quality textures in certain areas.

Overall, this is a surprisingly decent game. Is it worth full price? If you're a big FPS fan, then probably - it's going to be worth it to you more than whatever the latest shovel of CoD crap is anyway. It would have been easy for Bethesda to take the Doom licence and make a quick cash grab; they haven't done that.
