I've finally gotten around to playing doom over 2 years after it's released and.... I'm very underwhelmed. Played the first few hours of the campaign and it feels extremely bland for what it is. A vast majority of people seem to enjoy it, but the gameplay just wasn't satisfying for me. Wouldn't recommend.

The ONLY game, that made me take gaming seriously again since StarCraft 2... This is distilled perfection! This is what old school gamers have missed so much.... This is ID Software showing everyone what a GAME should be.. This is perfection in every sense possible! Now go and BFG Division until your heart explodes with adrenaline.... YES!!! IT'S THAT GOOD !!! Doom is Eternal!

A pretty good shooter if you wanna relax and just shoot the crap out of countless waves of enemies. But storywise it was boring and the boss fights were pretty meh.The final boss fight was pretty lame and i though that i would get a more epic final fight but i did not.For the price of 20 bucks i say its worth buying it

Forgot to mention the damn crapy music. It's a kind of hard rock music soundtrack but goodness, it's not even good (hard rock is not my cup of tea but I enjoy some metallica n co.).
Under scoring the game to balance the fake positive review here, deserves a 6-7.

A story without importance, basic and without hook that at no time tries to draw attention to the player.

The gunplay is excellent and the gameplay in general is very funny, but the plataformeo does not work and the game can be quite repetitive.
Executions ... More animations are needed. They become very repetitive.

Short version, it's fun to kill demons.

OK, it's a fast shooter, mainly for action moments and gore, don´t have a strong history but don't need it. It has a very good graphics and good scenarios.

    We’re doomed, I tell ya

If you’re familiar with DOOM 3 you’ll have a pretty good idea what to expect from DOOM 2016, although, in truth, it’s actually a little different, if memory serves me. There’s plenty to like here if you enjoy fast-paced arena-style battles with loads of enemies, big guns, and masses of demon gore. That’s basically what the DOOM games do and they do it very well.

There’s plenty to like here if you enjoy fast-paced arena-style battles with loads of enemies, big guns, and masses of demon gore. That’s basically what the DOOM games do and they do it very well. There is a story here, although I tended to forget about it most of the time because I was too busy jumping, strafing, and trying to stay alive. I seem to recall that the story in D3 had more impetus and that the combat was more diverse in style, but I could be remembering incorrectly (I’ll have to play it again to see). DOOM 2016 looks pretty good and it ran well (3 crashes in total, always alt-tab related). The music is fantastic and perfectly suited to the game. Personally, I find boss fights a little tedious and annoying but luckily there aren’t too many here, and those that there are didn’t irritate me, as they have, at times, in other games. Overall this is a good addition to the DOOM canon; it’s a blast from start to finish and is thoroughly enjoyable.

It was a long time since I felt like this again. If you have played classic FPS you know what I mean: the tension, the immersion, the pain in the hands and the relief once you are killed. They knew how to get back to the roots, a fast peace shooter like the first they created. This is not for fans of COD or Battlefield. It's for classic FPS players.

Absolute mayhem, absolute perfection. I haven't enjoyed a shooter this much in almost 15 years.

It'd be an 8/10, but the ridiculously amazing soundtrack bumps it up to 10/10. Part death metal blast beats, part old-school analog Industrial.

Oh, wait, the multiplayer is terrible... 9/10 it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DOOM (2016) ... the only FPS to give meaning for single player.
Let me sum my review to pros and cons and then (if you want , you can read my whole review for my reasons as to why the game is so GOOD !!)
    9/10

    pros
    -Great single player
-Weapons are unique and and awesome
    -soundtrack is pure BADASS
-Enemy variety !! something that's missing in alot in FPS shooters these days.
-Fast pace combat that feels like Devil may Cry with guns rather than swords
-custom maps by users is always great

    cons
    -multiplayer is not competitve
    -very unbalance to be honest
    -needs more boss battles

DOOM delivers what game should be like ... fun and chellenging.
It kinda feels like playing DMC4 with its fast pace combat.
You always need to move , different weapons behave different and camping on enemy AI is discouraged by how the game was create for you.
Get close and RIP AND TEAR UNTIL ITS DONE !!!
dogde, shoot , jump , glory kill and move to the next objective.

This leads me to the story. I'll be honest I didn't listen to the story narrative given by the robot guy , the evil woman and that demonic voice.
The game gives you the option to simple speedrun throu the game if you just care about playing the game.
How ? well , instead of being stuck in a cutsence or a walking section , you get listen to the narrative played in stations around the levels' map.
This goes very well with the main character , Doom guy/slayer (You).
So far , I heard that the story was great.

Of course , I can't avoid the big plus that this FPS game has over TONS of FPS shooters which is enemy variety.
Each enemy type fights different and you need to know who is the most threatning before you go and slay the others.
This comes to play heavily in hard difficulties , so get a grip on your mouse and GIT GUD !

Last is the multiplayer.... this wasn't heavily developed with thought.
    Its too chaotic.

I was looking forward that Doom online might be like the old Halo 3/2 multiplayer.
No class loadout (ONE default "loadout"), just weapon spawns. this could have made the online much better rather than coping the old COD formula.

I can already tell you this , the ability to give players to transform to demons that instant kill you will enrage you more than being killed by BFG blast.

luckily , replay value has its root in arcade more and custom maps made by users.
I played alot in arcade more to get S ranking (Slayer not Stylish XD).
Kinda of the reason why I think this game is DMC with guns rather than swords.

so overall .... the first FPS game that is par with the Halo games (except 4 and 5).

The atmosphere of the game was amazing the metallic rock in the game was excellent, and the horrifying sound of the monsters sent shivers down my spine. The design of the hordes of hell were excellent, and combined with the amazing atmosphere and ambiance, drew me into the game. Other great pluses include the combat system, the graphics, and map design. I really enjoyed the guns and upgrading each gun with new attachments and power-ups and the executions were brutal and epic. I really enjoyed how the combat system was very smart, smooth, and intuitive, especially the combat wheel which slowed down time whilst switching weapons. The smoothness in particular was amazing, and playing at 144fps on a high refresh rate monitor made it even more enjoyable, and higlights the dispartiy between consoles and PCs. The map design was another highlight. Each area of the game was cleverly designed so you could utilize the environment to your advantage. DOOM's graphics and art design are gorgeous. Sometimes I stopped just to stare at the scenery, from the desolate Martian landscape to the bleak environment of hell. However, the main weakness of the game in my opinion, comes from the story aspect of the game. Although there is much lore and secrets to be found in the game, the main story was quite bland in my opinion, and most of the objectives in the game consists of reaching this objective or that objective without much satisfaction or payoff. The linear pacing of the story made it quite bland, and it felt quite tedious. At times, completing meaningful objectives felt like chores. This greatly detracted my overall enjoyment of the game. Overall, DOOM is a solid FPS. The design, score, graphics, and combat of the game excelled, while the story was mediocre. I look forward to playing other ID Software games in the future, as DOOM has shown they are a team capable of creating fun shoot em' up games. Expand

Probably one of the easiest games I've ever played on Normal difficulty. Having said that, it was also a very satisfying game. The story was a bit "meh" but let's face it. Who plays doom for the storyline?
The graphics, sound and gore is what I was in it for and it delivered on those levels easily. If you're just in for a game to KILL - then this is the one for you. Well worth the money.

The gameplay is simple but hella fun and addicting, the several types of demons r amazing, the brutality of this game kinda feels casual after the first hour but that's not sth I rly care about. The boss fights were quite fun but maybe a little bit too easy (on normal mode) - the hardest unit in this game (for me) is probably the shield boi that can srsly piss you off... In total I give this game a ten out of ten - The only reason this was close of being an actual 9 for me, is probably because this campaign kinda felt short... I mean, holy **** the game catched me so hard - I couldnt stop playing it but suddenly, after beating the last boss - which was a little bit anti-climatic as he was hella easy on normal difficulty ... or did I play on easy? I was quite disappointed in how fast everything ended... But even that isn't that big of a deal as you have then the choice to just replay the game but on higher difficulty, or play the multiplayer or play that special ''arcade'' mode... In total I can recommend this gamr to every shooter fan. This is the most unexpected masterpiece I've ever played.

The main interesting mechanic from DOOM, as stated by Mark Brown (GMTK), is the fact that you can recover energy by finishing enemies at close-range with your fists when they’re low on health. First, it feels really good, there’s so much juice in each animation it’s really enjoyable to do it even after hundreds of these “glory kills”. But the main point is to make the player always in the center of the action, never sniping from far away, but instead go all in, especially when at low health. High risk, high reward.

The worst thing in this game is the sound design. Enemies that are below you appear to be right next to you. Sometimes I could hear enemies all around me, but when I looked, noone was there. They were all in another room below or above me. This is so bad to hear this in a game from 2016. While talking about the sound design, the metal-electro-indus music will engage you into the fight when there are enemies… but won’t stop until you find the last enemy in the zone, which is sometimes hidden or far away. So you run around, without anyone in view, but still listening to an hardcore music. Disturbing.

While playing, you’ll have a lot of possible challenges to complete, like killing 4 demons in a single gatling charge, or kill a big monster only with your sidearm. They change the way you play, making you try new weapons, new tactics, new ways to slaughter. But there may be too many challenges, and I found myself distracted a lot by these (because I wanted them all), which broke the flow. But when finally I unlocked all challenges, I was free to play the game any way I wanted, and I enjoyed it again at full potential, going as fast as possible, using the powerful arsenal given to me.

The game also has a lot of secret areas, so if you want to find them all, you can’t just go from a killing spree into another, but you have to carefully inspect each room, and use the map in the pause menu to detect secret zones, which also break the flow. At first, I finished the levels normally, then went back to find the secrets. I really appreciated that I could do that. But at a certain point in the game, I wasn’t able to backtrack anymore, so I had to stop this technique and examine the rooms after each massacre, breaking the flow each time. Too bad they didn’t design the later levels like the first ones.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review may contain some spoilers. I will try to avoid anything to crucial.

I'll start out by saying that DOOM is a fantastic reimagining of the original 93' and 94' mindless shooters that started the FPS genre, and I use the word mindless in a positive way. Doom has always been a game with relatively no plot line; it's killing for the sake of killing. The game focuses on its core mechanics of run-and-gun gameplay, never really letting up the action. Doom profits from this greatly. Whereas other modern day shooters try to focus on a lot of story segmented into the action - because lets face it, your happiest when you're shooting a gun on CoD or Battlefield - Doom tries to keep story at a distance, yet somehow manages to nail the perfect balance needed to keep you engaged.

As soon as you begin, you're given a brief introduction of your goal by an ominous voice: "Rip and tear, until it is done!" and that's your objective for the rest of the game. Shoot anything in your path and move fast enough to avoid them doing the same to you. Within 20 seconds of the game starting, you're killing demons, and it continues like that from there. You will unlock new weapons, upgrade them to do a variety of different things (and by that I mean variety of ways to kill more demons), unlock perks to enhance your gameplay and make you tougher and faster as the game progresses. It's action at its purest form, and that is the helm that Doom has held for the past 25 years and shows that it is still deserving of that mantle.

The story is simple enough to give what the other games didn't: reason. It explains why the demons have been unleashed on Mars, how it happened, why it all started, and even (this is perhaps the most fascinating part of the story) goes into details about Doom Marine's origins. This aspect is taken to a level that is somewhat absurd as it paints Doom Marine as an ancient being who has been fighting the demon hordes for over a millennia. Demons have scripture about him written into their home: Hell, and he is heavily feared amongst all of the evil he faces. This is not only an interesting plot point, but is a nice homage to the badass feeling the original 90's games evoked amongst their players. It solidifies Doom Marine as this ultimate beast, and many players who played all those years ago will recognise that amazing testament to his legacy. Overall, the story was enough to keep me intrigued about the game's events as I fought my way through Mars and Hell and was actually more than I was expecting. It's a nice addition to the game if nothing else.

In terms of campaign, that's all there really is to say. It's very well done in every aspect and is the game's strongest part. The multiplayer however is awful. For me, it doesn't bring the game's score down too much (it would be a ten if there was no multiplayer) but it's a very downgraded, very annoying version of what you get in the campaign. Everything feels like it has been kind of slapped together. The maps are okay, though can be confusing, but the hitboxes on other players and the overall gameplay is extremely bad. You will die a lot due to reasons you can't explain, or just because it's a massive cluster of explosions and grenades and damage you can't avoid with skill. The game just falls into chaos and degrades the experience. Multiplayer does offer a huge range of cosmetics, such as changing your armour pieces, armour color, your taunts such as dance moves, etc. Unfortunately, you need to have fun in multiplayer to have fun with these trinkets, and in my experience, that is a rarity.

The other third of the game is the map and game mode creator called Snap Map. This is actually a really cool feature with tons of gameplay hours you can sink into it. You can play community made maps and build your own. There are lots of options in building your own maps, some of it quite complex, though it is intuitive and easy to pick up. A few tutorials on Youtube should help you get set if you are a little overwhelmed.

Overall, the game is brilliant. The campaign alone is worth a buy and it does justice to the DOOM name. I'd never played the originals until recently as I was only born a few years later, so I missed out on that rise of the FPS genre, but going back and playing them was awesome and really helps me appreciate the game series overall. I can say as a new player to Doom, this really sucked me into the series as a whole, and I'm sure if you're a fan of the original two, you will love this game! Just don't go looking for too much in the multiplayer as you may be disappointed.

As a single player game it would've gotten my game of the year nomination. The campaign is beautifully designed, with appropriate difficulty progression and enough unlocks to keep things fresh throughout. Although some might feel it deviates too much from the original games by adding unlocks and upgrades, it makes the combat, in my opinion, so much more tailored to your personal style. The campaign is beautifully designed, with appropriate difficulty progression and enough unlocks to keep things fresh throughout. Although some might feel it deviates too much from the original games by adding unlocks and upgrades, it makes the combat, in my opinion, so much more tailored to your personal style. I spent all my points on the rocket launcher and the double-barreled shotgun, but my roommate decided to spend the points he earned on the gauss cannon instead. It's fulfilling and each fight is tactical, letting you choose how to engage the enemy, when to use your special weapons and when to glory kill demons to quickly gain health to get back into the fight. The weapons are powerful and intense, and Id should be commended for making the campaign one of the best FPS experiences this year.
SnapMap's ok. I don't use it much other than to make stupid arenas where ludicrous amounts of demons spawn. I've heard complaints of limitations due to consoles but in all honesty you really need to be ambitious to push those limits.

Multiplayer is kinda dull. The weapons feel weak and there's no teamwork. The demon rune system is alright, but I've seen a good share of teams doing nothing but running solo against the demon only to get rekt. It's a bit too much like Halo, and that's a pity. It feels boring and it doesn't really commit to either fanbase of modern shooters and arena shooters. leaving you with a surprisingly generic experience. Also remove glory kill animations. In multiplayer you're as good as dead if you stand still in an animation. I really don't like the token system. Why should someone spawn with extra armor? I hope that doesn't come back. There's a lot of customization, but you'll need to unlock them. They range from different armor sets, colours, wear and tear levels and light schemes and emblems. Well done there except it's obvious some colours help you blend into the environment better.
EDIT post update 6.66 I feel the multiplayer is more balanced and fun, but due to the declining population of the game, I feel that this game should almost solely be judged on its campaign. Perhaps Quake Champions will fill the multiplayer old school shooter slot. who knows.

Graphically looks superb. The gun models look great and the environments are eye candy. A lor of praise for the team who made going to hell a sightseeing trip. A lot of pop in textures when loading and the draw distances aren't so great, but when everything works(which is most of the time) it looks great. I maintained a solid 60FPS and I can't wait to see how the Vulkan patch helps performance. I can't tell many differences switching from medium to high quality anyway, but the low graphics settings are pretty demanding themselves so be warned you'll need a decent rig to run 60 FPS.
EDIT: the vulkan patch didn't do much for me, tested on GTX 970 and 1080. AMD users may get a bigger performance boost.

Is there a story? Not really but I'm not here for one. Is there a tutorial? No not really. You start and off you go! there's hints and stuff but honestly it's great to see a game without a half-hour tutorial. Ending was mehhhhhhhhhhhhh but I wasn't really committed anyways. There's optional lore for those who want to read it.
The music is great. Mick Gordon really captured the tone and energy of the game. It feels aggressive, with rock and metal pounding during the intense gunfights. I hope the OST gets released. It is one of the best soundtracks this year.
What would I say needs improvement? I gave it a 10, but that's based off how much i enjoyed it. If i could pay just 40 USD and only get the campaign, there's not much I can really complain about. Fix the multiplayer and some of the weirder glitches here and there and it'd be fine.
Also the easter eggs are amazing. I'm still missing one mini doom-guy figurine but I'll keep looking.
EDIT I have found it now.

It's super fun and, while it's hardcore, you don't feel like a victim here, because of atmosphere the game creates. Conversely your enemies are the ones who should fear as a protagonist is a brutal hard person which wants to destroy all evil and nothing else. The game is not easy, you just get this feeling while playing it and it's good.

The gameplay is excellent and pros compensate cons of the game.
    The bad things are:
    - No GPS. Adding it would definitely make the game even better. Its absense quite often forces you to go here and there in a search of the right way. It's not hard to find, but simply wastes some of your time. It's a perfect shooter, so making this particular aspect of the game a bit more friendly to the player would have been nice of devs.
    - No manual saves. Saves/loads/checkpoints are also unfriendly to the player.
    - Some bugs still in 2017/2018. F.e., a critical one - finishing opponents sometimes makes you stuck in textures.
    - More than 50% of weapon and armor upgrades are inappreciable.
It also would have been nice if there were more different weapons and bosses in the game. And of course single player compaign could have been longer than it is right now. No replayability when you finish the game on normal difficulty.

But, as written above it's still a perfect pure FPS: perfect shooter gameplay, excellent soundtrack, nice graphics, optimisation and the story doesn't distract you from killing everything in sight, but also keeps you going on.

In addition, the game runs very well at the recommended spec and for setups not too far below it as well, though there are known issues with 2gb graphics cards that may result in occasional framerate drops. There are also a few instances of low-res textures streaming in not fully loaded. I also wasn't a fan of the challenges and weapon mastery tasks. These are incentivized with weapon upgrades/tokens though often require you to complete tasks or approach combat in a totally inefficient way (eg: kill a Mancubus with a pistol) that you would never have done otherwise. This unfortunately interrupts the flow of combat.

DOOM is a game for people that want to be challanged. The different difficulty levels actually change up the game instead of just changing some numbers for weaponstats. Higher difficulty = more enemies.

The story is basically irrelevant - which is a good thing. There is some humor involved, though. At one point the game even mocks the player by locking him in a room to listen to a stupid robot explaining useless stuff - just like Call of Duty and all the other "Cinematic" games. id Software knows its playerbase. :)

    1 – GENERAL

I do not know if I should classify DOOM as a FPS or a run and gun. Probably both should be the correct answer.

When you start playing, and after a short and easy demon killing spree, the Doom Guy is presented with the first burst of storytelling. You immediately think that the game is ruined, but you are wrong. Doom Guy almost always ignores all the information and help, he's there to kill demons, and that's also, what you want. So it's a win-win, right?

Despite that, the story is there if you want to know it, and it's quite good tbh. I assume I was one of those searching and reading parts of the story, it's interesting enough to keep me motivated to search for it. It's not shallow also. Thumbs up Bethesda.

We have quite a set of sounds to talk about in this game. The guns have nothing remarkable to speak about, but also nothing wrong about them. That's good, do not get me wrong, but not at the same level as the demons sounds, that are mostly flawless and very different between them. And I cannot forget the soundtrack. That heavy metal... what a joy to listen. Probably the best soundtrack of a game from this genre.

This game is not a visual novel, and if you are searching for top quality graphics probably this is not your game, but it does the job quite well, and both Mars and Hell are quite well designed, and they are very immersive. The game as tons of platforming, so most levels evolve around that concept. The ledges have to be distinguishable so we know where to grab, that's enough for a surprisingly atmospheric game, but not enough to be as beautiful as the Witcher 3. But believe me, you will not notice that.

    2 – GAMEPLAY

Brace yourself because you will spend some time dashing and shooting in this game. And you will have to do this at quite a fast pace. That's positive stuff in my book, but at some point, this starts to get a bit repetitive, and you will ask for more. At that point, you will start to sense the endgame, and your excitement starts to grow again. OFC the very intensive boss battles give a little help to that excitement, even if the bosses are a bit of bullet sponges with not much of intelligence to go with it, but believe me when I say that you will only think about that after the battle is over.

Glory kills are a blast and you will not get sick of those. Nothing better than a demon dismemberment to start the day, right? And also, those are very important for you, since they provide valuable health and armour pickups. Without those, you would not last long.

Are you getting short of ammo? Worry not, just grab your chainsaw and saw some demon in half. He will give you that much needed ammo refill in form of massive ammo drops. Does this make the game significantly easier? Yes, but who cares? Just give me that chainsaw kill!!

You can upgrade all your weapons for an increased amount of fun. You just have to find the correct pickups and buy an upgrade. Simple as that.

That game is packed full of secrets to find and places to explore. Just prepare yourself to do some platforming puzzles and you are good to go. I admit that my main focus was always the killing part, but at some point, I started to take joy in finding those secrets also.

You also have a multiplayer mode. A conventional arena shooter, with tons of unlockable and where you can play the demon also. This last part is the best thing about multiplayer modes. The mode is OK, but just very far from the fun I have in campaign mode. There's a lot of people still playing it, so if that's your thing, you will enjoy this one also.

    3 – CONCLUSION

I usually play older games, and I'm always complaining that the games are not what they used to be. DOOM is what games used to be when I was younger, and at the same time, it gives me hope for some other older games like Duke Nukem or so.

It's a very good game, very fast paced, very straightforward, very linear and very fun.

    It worth every penny.

    Just go buy it!

Right at the beginning of the game, it says F1 and F2 are used to switch inventory items, and LCtrl is to use items. There is also an upgrade tree for inventory items. I'm currently 8 hours into the game and I have never found an inventory item. I'm still hoping I eventually find one.

    Saving:
There's no way to manually save the game. This is a huge problem because the auto saves are based on plot points rather than locations or a timer. Dying can easily set the player back by 20 or 30 minutes. All of the found secrets are lost, all of the enemies need to be killed again, all of the items need to be picked up again. Although the game has a lot of secrets and areas to explore, the game severely punishes players for exploring. You might die because Doom Guy didn't grab onto a ledge you expected him to grab, and now you're back to where you were 30 minutes ago. This forces an ultra conservative play style that clashes with the run and gun theme of the game.

    Data Corruption:
The game crashed when I was about 2 hours into playing, and my save file was corrupted. Since there is no manual saving, and the auto save only keeps 1 save state, this means a single crash can wipe out all of your save data. All of your secrets are gone, all of your little doom guy trophies are gone, all of your upgrades are gone.A few people on the internet have complained about losing save data when they're deep into the game, and those people are justifiably angry as hell. This also means you shouldn't play Doom if your computer has any stability problems or if your neighborhood has power problems. If you get a blue screen or a power failure while playing Doom, there's a good chance all of your data will be corrupted. It's just bad game design to not allow manual saving.

You'll find none of that in the 2016 Doom. The formula: wander around aimlessly for awhile until you accidentally find yourself in a new area, get locked into an arena-style room that you can't escape until you kill all the monsters. Repeat, repeat again, and just keep repeating over and over and over.

The gameplay is kinda like Painkiller, only more generic. The graphics are okay, but there are some pretty low-res textures in here that look like something from 10 years ago. The environments are static and noninteractive. The music is generic tech-metal stuff that's completely forgettable. Could they have not used even one track from the original? The game's atmosphere and setting are cheesy and overwrought, nothing like the true terror that the originals and even Doom 3 managed to evoke. It's almost like it's an unfunny joke version of Doom, I mean Painkiller, I mean Smash TV, I mean generic crap that seems to copy the core elements of their gameplay yet falls far short of being anywhere near as fun as those games.

Oh, I hope you like jumping puzzles. Yes, an FPS with jumping puzzles. This idea sucked in Turok, 20 years ago, and it sucks just as bad, if not worse, in Doom. Instead of allowing you to save whenever you want like in every other Doom game, you get a checkpoint system. Really? The difficulty is highly inconsistent. Some battles are just a breeze, then others are irritatingly drawn out too hard. I didn't try it on the lower difficulty settings, since it would mostly be too easy, but the higher settings are where you run into this inconsistency.

The multiplayer is bland and lackluster. It's nowhere near as good as Unreal Tournament (any version, take your pick) or Quake 3. I'd rather play Battlefield or Call of Duty, and that's not saying much since that style of gameplay has been done to death, but then so has Doom's. It was cool in Serious Sam, but somehow Doom manages to miss even that mark.

    What a letdown.

This is the sole reason it has a 9 instead of a perfect 10. They absolutely should not be trying to shoehorn this style of storytelling into this series. It's all about the go-go-go.

Massive maps and an outrageous soundtrack. Best shooter since Doom 1 and Doom 2. No hyperbole.

You will be fighting in the first 10 seconds of the game. Combat is challenging and very fluid with emphasis on speed, which they've certainly cranked up. Stopping is death on nightmare. Glory kills are satisfying, can be a ammo saver, and really don't hinder game flow at all, and can even be upgraded to perform faster (or toggled off in the options).

Level design is absolutely impressive. This was my biggest concern with Doom, and rest assured id FINALLY did it right. Non-linear, lots of exploration, plenty of secrets with hidden guns, secret level unlocks, and equipment.

The monsters are relentless. On nightmare you will get your♥♥♥♥♥kicked. This is a fact, and there's no way to circumvent this. I honestly felt at times that I was playing Project Brutality on "Last Man on Earth" difficulty. Monsters boast a variety of attacks, chase you down, flank you, and can be tough as nails (sometimes a little too good).

Weapons look and feel satisfying, great attention to detail. You will use guns interchangeably, each has their respective uses. You'll have to search the environment for health and ammo, aside from the chainsaw kills on enemies, they drop little items- but enough to keep you going (i.e +5 health occasionaly or like 4 shotgun shells). The BFG literally clears an entire room in one shot, and I couldn't help but smile at the results. Upgrades and progression in this game are entirely optional, but really help shift the game to fit how you play (the air control ability is the best imo).

The graphics are incredible too, although you better have a strong card if you want to play on Ultra with anti-aliasing, etc. Uncapping framerate, setting your FOV to 130, tons of options to customize.

And I have to say, Mick Gordon's soundtrack in this game is some of the best I've heard in a while. On the third level, I was literally head banging and rocking out to a soundtrack that felt like a crossbreed between Lamb of God, Celldweller, and Rage Against the Machine.

Overall, I can confidently say that this is the Doom game we've wanted. We all can breath a sigh of relief now that the main portion of the game is actually well-done. That beta we played is absolutely no indicator of how the campaign plays in the slightest, and id did it right with this one. Definitely recommend this title as a gamer, a die hard Doom fan (still play the classic to this day), and FPS fanatic.

EDIT: Since some of you do not take the time to actually explore the game's options and like to jump to conclusions, you can in fact start the game on nightmare. Ultra-nightmare is unlocked after beating the game, NOT regular nightmare. Fact.

Living up to the expectation of the series that started it all is a hard thing to do. But amazingly enough DOOM does not disappoint the player. Keeping the same gameplay style as the first two games you will run around a maze like level collecting cards or collectables while killing all the demons from hell. If you’re looking for a story then most of the games story is written through codex entries so you don’t have to be bothered if you don’t want to. Since you are running like a lunatic escaping from the police enemies drop health and ammo like its candy, so although you will be losing a lot of health with the fast paced action you won’t likely die. There is no reloading your gun; you have a full arsenal at your disposal (not that 2 gun carry rule). Once you weaken your enemies an execution move can be performed which doesn’t really ruin the pacing of the game. However the moments where you have to run and find key cards can be sluggish at times. But magically your character has a telepathic HUD that shows you where you have to go just in case you get lost. Oh, and you also have a map too. Just in case you really don’t want to explore. But those are minor details.

Speaking of weapons there is a chainsaw which can be used three times. If you are running extremely low on ammo you can use this beauty to make the baddies pour ammo from their intestines. Using the BFG is an amazing feeling. You will not be disappointed with the amount of gore in this game. The multiplayer however, is much to be desired. Taking notes from Halo Reach, instead of running around an arena with a bunch of weapons to collect. You instead start off with a somewhat heavy arsenal with a two weapon limit that can be built up over time. However this is my experience with the BETA version of it so I cannot speak for the recent release of the game. Multiplayer isn’t the reason I purchased doom. The single player is the sole reason.

The creators of DOOM did release an update for the game. Rightfully called “Update 6.66”. Update 6.66 brings substantial changes to the game’s multiplayer, with a revised progression system, new rune system for loadouts, enhanced kill notifications and bug fixes. In addition to these improvements, we’re upgrading all existing players’ content to include all multiplayer DLC. It also includes all of the DLC free with the update. So you don’t have to go spending all of your hard earned cash on additional content to the game. It comes with it. Which is really nice of ID.
Overall if you’re looking for a game to kill a weekend with then you can’t go wrong with DOOM. You won’t get bored as easy as you might think, and above all else it is a fun adventure. I give this game an 8.4, and if the multiplayer would have been as good as the original (Which it probably but my ignorance at the moment has me at a standstill in this regard) I would of given it a perfect 10.
    Happy Gaming!

DOOM is a re-imagining of the genre-defining classic shooter which manages to stay true to its roots whilst brining in a healthy dose of modern enhancements.

As with classic Doom, health, armor and ammo are pick-up based (no regeneration), there are only 10 weapons which are unlocked throughout the game (via exploration), there is no reloading, there are very few cutscenes and it's just fast-paced demon-slaying action all the way. Although on the surface it sounds like it's extremely repetitive, there are some excellent additions to keep the experience more entertaining. Firstly, as with all good classic shooters, there is a clear emphasis on exploration. You are rewarded for exploring the game's vast levels not just with meaningless collectibles and background reading, but with useful resources that will help you develop your demon-slaying capabilities. For example, each weapon can be customised with two weapon mods found from Field Drones, and each attachment can be upgraded using upgrade points, and even then there is a challenge for each mod to further enhance its capabilities. You can also upgrade the Doom Marine's suit and capabilities - again, this is almost exclusively from exploration. There are also Runes - mini challenges with a given set of conditions in an arena which, if completed, unlocks a "perk" (you can have three equipped at once) which can then be further enhanced by completing the challenges. Each level also has its own three challenges to complete. There are even sections of classic Doom maps to be found in each level! So to get the point across: there are some light RPG elements which are non-disruptive but also stay true to the spirit of the original. Furthermore, dying does not reset progress towards challenges, so it doesn't feel like a grind.

The campaign is a fair length - especially if, like me, you try to explore every last nook and cranny of the levels. With an exploration-intensive playstyle, expect to spend around an hour minimum per level and there are 13 levels. It is best played on Ultra-Violence (the hardest starting difficulty available) since it feels challenging and intense as it should but becomes easier when you've got loads of upgrades later on in the game.

In terms of performance, DOOM is extremely well-optimized on both Vulkan and OpenGL 4.5 graphics APIs. Even on a modest gaming rig (GTX 1060 6GB, i5-3470, 12GB RAM) the holy grail of 4K Ultra 60 FPS is achievable (though admittedly with around 75% resolution scaling) on OpenGL, and around 130 FPS at 1080p Nightmare settings.

In terms of additional content, DOOM has a multiplayer component which is, as expected, an arena shooter with the usual game modes and extremely light customisation. Whilst this sounds great, it isn't especially balanced because of some consumable "perks" which put higher-level players at an advantage. The gameplay is also not satisfying in my opinion, and it just feels like a mess. I'm usually a fan of "tacked-on" multiplayers due to their simplicity, but Doom's doesn't do it for me; though perhaps more skilled players who enjoy games like Quake and Unreal Tournament might enjoy it.

Perhaps the most novel feature of DOOM is SnapMaps; allowing you to create your own levels complete with their own objectives, enemeies, AI behaviour, pickups etc. The interface and tutorials for doing these are fairly good, but as with all "game creators", it is extremely time-consuming to do something simple. Still, it's a nice addition, though I haven't seen anything particularly stand out made by the community.

Overall, DOOM 2016 is exactly the kind of game I hoped it would be. Everything from the weapons, gameplay, enemies, levels and even the option to have that classic centred weapon pose (as opposed to the ubiquitous right-handed pose of modern shooters) are reminiscent of the classic Doom games, and I'm pleased to say that Doom's spirit has aged beautifully. This is a shining example of how to modernise a classic game series without losing its essence.

The story is minimal - and I felt that it's only reason for being there is to somehow explain the demon enemies you need to face. And those are very familiar doom enemies, just in a modern high-res edition. They look great, they've got distinct attack patterns and fighting them is just pure fun.

The graphics are really well done. Especially the enemy design. But environments are nothing to be ashamed of ass well. Both hell and Mars base are really great looking and well designed.

The soundtrack is amazing. I heard people prising it before but actually experiencing in in-game is an experience of it's own. High paced heavy metal makes your blood pumping. The other sound effects are top notch as well - especially guns sound really satisfying.

DOOM is a reboot of DOOM, one of the first really popular first person shooters from, oh, the early 1990s. The original DOOM blew people away with its pseudo-3D graphics and gameplay. The 2016 DOOM is hoping to blow audiences away with a game with amazing graphics and gameplay which harkens back to the 1990s.

It succeeds, albeit incompletely – as while the game is quite good at times, it also reminds us all of exactly why things changed, and it isn’t nearly as memorable as I would have expected.

DOOM has a very old school aesthetic in some ways. Gone is reloading – you can fire all of your weapons until you are out of ammunition. Gone is a limitation on weapons carried – you eventually tote around ten primary weapons, most of which have two weapon attachments which change their alternative fire, as well as three equipment items, two of which are grenades and one of which is a hologram used to draw enemy fire. There is no regenerating health – instead, ammunition is lying around the levels in boxes lying on the ground, there are health packs and armor packs lying around, and in a few areas there are temporary power-ups such as quad damage, invincibility, haste, and similar things which make you that much more powerful for a short period of time.

Coupled to this is always running around the level by default, the ability to pull yourself up to platforms, the ability to double jump (eventually), and a general run-and-gun style of gameplay as the demons try to close in from all angles due to the design of various areas, forcing you to keep moving if you don’t want an enemy to attack you from behind. Some of the later enemies have pretty high health as well, further encouraging you to run around as if you stay in place, they will get to you before you kill them.

The enemies in the game have okay if not amazing variety – there’s over a dozen kinds of enemies, from agile imps which throw ranged attacks at you and attack you sometimes, to enemies with shields, to a couple varieties of flying enemies (one a suicidal kamikaze, one a ranged attacker), a few big ground melee demons, a couple big ranged demons, and some big mixed-ranged demons. While these are okay in terms of variety, it isn’t great, and the game stops introducing new demons about halfway through. This is unfortunate, as beyond that point, the only “new demons” are a couple of remixes of older ones (which aren’t that new feeling), as well as three bosses which, while okay, are not exactly amazing.

Sadly, this leads the game to feel a bit stale after a while – once you’ve unlocked all the weapons and fought all the enemy types, there’s about half a dozen levels left in the game for you to fight through. Worse, the game gets quite a bit easier at that point, both because there’s nothing new to throw at you, as well as because you just continually get more and more overpowered as you unlock more powers for your weapon secondary fires and various static bonuses continue to accrue in the forms of adjustable powers from unlockable runes which you acquire in various levels, as well as the upgrades to your armor abilities and base health and armor. The BFG is almost comically overpowered, and the chainsaw, while limited in ammunition, ensures that you never run out of ammo of anything important. Indeed, in some of the later portions of the game you can unlock rune combinations which effectively give you infinite ammo and make it very easy to maintain tons of health and armor, making the game almost trivial in some places, while the BFG can be used to bail you out of any seriously difficult situation – including the bosses.

Additionally, running around and picking up ammo and health and armor, while it feels novel at first, is actually kind of tedious. Worse, it actually highlights one of the problems of many modern games with collectables – secrets seem like this really cool thing, but in practice they end up slowing down gameplay as you wander around hunting for them. This results in the game’s pacing, which is pretty solid if you just play through, being interrupted at times by wandering around looking for resources and secrets.

This really just kind of highlights why some of the old DOOM things aren’t done anymore – hunting down ammo, armor, and health packs just isn’t that fun, and secret hunting can interrupt the flow of the game’s otherwise pretty intense gameplay.

That being said, this game is pretty fun for a good chunk of its run. The story, while nothing special, works pretty well, the DOOM Marine’s attitude towards mission control is kind of amusing as he starts off by smashing a few screens which try to deliver exposition at the player, there are only a limited number of cutscenes to interrupt the flow of the game, and the actual run-around-and-shoot-demons-that-are-spawning-constantly gameplay works pretty well.

Then there is the multi-player. That is if you can find someone else to play with. Here about a year later from release and the the server(s) are pretty much dead.
Also in the original Doom there was no concept of level. Here you are everyone's **** until you play up in levels because the level 50 people will stomp you. In the original you could just jump right in on an equal footing and it was your skill that made the difference.

The best DOOM of all time, great graphics, intense gameplay, really good. Good difficulty and many weapons to choose from, the gameplay is light and runs very fast on the PC!

The gameplay is fast and brutally demanding, requiring good accuracy while running without ever stopping your killing spree. Combat is incredible, fluid and with good AI, really fun! There is a great variety of weapons which you might use on your quest to turn every demon on Mars and Hell into a fine red mist. There is no dialogue (only monologues), which could only slow down the pace, so if you play just for the story, sorry, this won't be a game for you. There is no aiming down sights, which would be as useful as GTA's traffic lights, as almost every demon runs around and jumps like they are on cocaine. This game will reward for going as fast as possible and letting out your anger on computer generated demons by brutally killing them (which will give you more health and sometimes ammo) which will burn your virgin eyes out (that is until you get a berserk power-up (it basically enables you to go even further and kill everything within the reach of your stubby arms into grinded flesh in one hit), causing your eves explode. Levels are incredibly linear, which makes game even better, as you never have to stop your genocide spree (call PETA - demons have rights too!). Still, there are a lot of secrets, which are even harder to find, as linear level design and the environment will make it much harder to find. Lastly, the game is incredibly well optimised, with loading only between levels and I was amazed, as I didn't expect my GTX 970 to go much further than high settings and 50 fps, but it ended up running at 60 fps on ultra settings. Just for that I'd give the game 9/11!

It was ok. Easily an 8/10 for single mode (I haven't tried multiplayer). But, it loses 2 points, because it does get REPETITIVE towards the last ~20% of the game (same fight styles/arenas).

I found this to be a really fun game to play. Not usually a big fan of these kind of FPS, but it just does it well. You can relax and just blow away some demons in a quick session or settle in for a long play through. Single Player is well worth it alone.

Doom is such a treat. It's a high octane first person shooter that ditches a lot of the trappings of its genre. Despite its higher production values and polished looks, this is a new DOOM. Despite its higher production values and polished looks, this is a new DOOM. While reinventing itself it also is a homage to itself. The first thing you notice when you play DOOM is it's speed. There is no regenerating health or cover. There is only you, the Doom guy and the countless hordes of demons that are soon to be fodder for your arsenal. You kill your first demon in the first few seconds of the game and by the time a half an hour has past, you have shot, punched and kicked several denizens of hell into a bloody pulp.

Doom's gameplay has a satisfying loop. Killing demons itself is fun. But the way you kill them is just as important. You can perform a variety of glory kills. These glory kills are vital in that they drop ammo and health that you need so you can ...you guessed it, kill more demons. When your an inch from death, it's incredibly satisfying to tear into a demon with a chainsaw and watch the much needed health and ammo you need pop out like a gore covered pinata.

DOOM's story is fairly simple and straight forward. But it doesn't have to be anything more than that. It gives you context for your actions and doesn't overstay its welcome allowing you to get back to the action.

I love how many aspects and most monsters from the original DOOM are brought back into this game. The shootout battles that ensue are very fun and extremely intense at times, especially on a harder difficulty. A few downsides though stop this title from becoming a masterpiece, but it is still absolutely worth a play-through or two. Negatives include an overall short single player campaign and a multiplayer option that is hard to get into because there are so many other choices out there. Expand

I should start off by saying that I bought this game on Humble Bundle for $19.79. I don't know that I would spend full retail for this game.

With that said, I really enjoyed this game! I'm not a die-hard DOOM follower, but that didn't prevent me from following the campaign and enjoying it fully. My experience was mostly bug-free and the game looks amazing on my i5-3570k and GTX 780

My experience was mostly bug-free and the game looks amazing on my i5-3570k and GTX 780 SC. They keep the campaign fun by allowing a little bit of customization with gun mods and specialization points that you can use, to compliment your play style.

What caught me by surprise was that my girlfriend actually got pretty heavy into the game. She's not a gamer by any means, and she struggles with the movement/double-jump, but I can tell she likes the combat. The "glory kills" feel very similar to Shadow of Mordor, but are just as unique and fun. The campaign also offers challenges and rune trials to keep things interesting.

My only criticism of the game is simply that the campaign didn't feel super long, and there isn't a whole lot of replay value for me.

So the game is straight-forward: you kill stuff and then go to hell and kill some more. There isn't much in terms of plot but this is Doom. There's a storyline but it's thin, but that's OK. Here's the meat of the burger: gameplay. Crazy, loony and berserk madness. These demons are NOT dumb. Well sometimes they are but for the most part they won't stand there and get killed. They're quick, resourceful and armed to the fangs. They're ugly and mean and merciless. The level designs are clever and vast. The navigation and maps are simple and effective so you never get lost or confused. The arsenal is nuts. So many weapons. Where does he put them all?! I did have an issue with the customization as it was TOO elaborate at times. You get two types of grenades which is fine but I could've used a third since I never found out what the Argent grenade did exactly. I rarely used the hologram but it was a nice addition to the equipment stack. Lots of final upgrades require challenges and those are pretty hard. Plenty of hidden stuff (look for grates and floor/ceiling panels BTW) hidden everywhere that can be found on the maps. As for the aesthetics: just astonishing. The environments are detailed and rendered perfectly. The lighting is awesome looking. The sound effects are crisp and varied. The voice over work is very good and well written. There's not much of it but it works when its there. There are little to no faults here. It's just that amazing. Expand

While the running and gunning do feel good and solid, the game is broken into individual arenas. These arenas are much too small to provide imaginative gameplay for a hardcore arena shooter. The enemy count is also very small at any given time. Keep in mind that the enemies don't appear all at once, but TELEPORT in after you've killed some of them. It ruins the tempo and strategizing and was done to keep consoles running smoothly.

After finishing an arena, the game is slowed down with tedious exploring, bad story telling, scripted cut scenes and jumping to platforms before reaching another small group of enemies in the next arena. This constant starting and stopping of action takes you out of the game. Add to this an extremely low ammo count and the action becomes a dance where you must watch for Glory Kills and Chainsaw kills to get needed supplies every few seconds. Basically, the game gets in the way of itself at every turn.

What is that about the locked doors and need to survive each time until everything is dead than opens up... That's not what doom 1, 2 was about. Then those melee fights to get life... pffff I don't get it. Weapons feel flat no reloads because yeah you know it's a button to much for the kids let's just auto reload when walking over ammo... just take the shotgun it is so far of the feeling it has from doom 1,2, duke nukem or even Serious Sam.

Seems like those who love the game that so much actually are not from the older times where we played 100's of hours playing doom and especially doom 2. How many times I had a jump inside those was incredible as it was never expected... here you know it's gone be full until everything is erased and move on...so boring.
