A must play for all DOOM fans, and FPS enthusiasts!

I have played Doom 64, and Doom 2016. This is by far the BEST. It has more to do than most DOOM "purists" may like. It has puzzles in between fights which slows the pacing down (didn't Doom 2016 also have puzzles too? If i remember correctly there were some puzzles in 2016), and the fact that you use the chainsaw for ammo, the punches

Sure, you may have to slow down and THINK a little about your next move, but it allows the game to be very rich and rewarding as you adjust and get better.

The multiplayer (Battlemode) is addicting and fun, and more replayable than it already is. I just highly recommend beating/getting good at the campaign before jumping in. It can be intense with all of the currently quarantined pros online. Also, where is the horde mode? Please give us a horde mode!

    Boring and tedious.

Graphics are nice, but weapons can barely hold any ammo, I can't get loose even for a minute without worrying ammunition, forcing me switching weapons which is downright retarded. Walk speed is pretty slow as well. Story... doesn't really exist, go there, pick up this, go there, kill that. People talking to you, but since MC can't speak, it serves no purpose either.

Exactly the evolution I expected from developers. Not at all disappointed.

I must have played that game for at least 40 to 60 hours.
DOOM Eternal for me was a must play on release date. I was hyped to see what they can come up on a gameplay perspective to already improve the very addicting cycle of the previous one.
    GAMEPLAY
This category was heavily improved. The demons are separated in the codex into sections, you have the common demons that are basically cannon fodder, you use them to get either health from Glory Kills or Ammo with the Chainsaw.
YOU NEED THE CHAINSAW. Ammo is no joke, you are constantly using your entire arsenal, and with the need to replenish ammo in the middle of a fight.
You have more equipment, a Frost Grenade, a Frag Grenade and a Flamethrower all mounted up on your shoulder in a Predator-like add on to the suit.
Heavy Demons now have weak points, that require precision in the middle of a crowded fight. For example, the Mancubus has two flamethrowers you need to snipe out in order to reduce his threat. So, you can remove each weapon and then focus on other demons, or maybe just focus on him entirely, is your choice.
You have a Meat Hook with the Super Shotgun, you can DASH, Double jump, Vault on yellow pipes. The amount of mid air options they added is actually very good. You are a lot more mobile this time around.
If you sum up all of these improvements, not only the game feels different than the 2016 one, but is improved in every way, the weak points require you to think in the middle of a fight how to cripple a heavy demon and then get back on the move, and when you move, the levels are designed so you always have an escape route, you just need to be creative and never stand still.
    Oh, the SWORD. Period.
    GRAPHICS
New Engine looks great, I think the biggest improvement is that you can see the damage you are doing to every demon, pieces of flesh fly out of their bodies when you shoot them, you leave exposed bone and tissue. The blood looks better.
And in general there are some levels that make you say “Wow this looks very good” there is even a level at the end, that a door opens and I literally thought “Amazing” and the AI that is with you the entire trip says something “I know right, looks amazing”. Great job there.
    STORY
This is the first DOOM game where I actually cared about the Story, not only that, you no longer have to rely absolutely on the CODEX to learn about the world. There is carefully crafted story, you can follow up no matter what. Sure, there are some things and flashbacks to real DOOM fans out there. But in general, is a good story, you get to see unfold. The bosses and priests all have great voice acting. And it made me want to check the codex very often to improve the information.
By the time you are in the last couple of missions, you WANT to know more, you WANT to see more flashbacks and understand the way this world works. The explanations on Argent Energy, Hell and Earth, they are all very interesting.
    SOUND / MUSIC
I played with a 7.1 Headset all the time, and the sound is spotless. You can listen every little thing that happens, from demons getting obliterated, to the chain in the Meat Hook. Even the little flame and embers of your flamethrower.
The music is exactly what you are expecting if you are a fan of the Heavy Metal DOOM 2016. Boy you will be pleased here. Is so satisfying to hear the tunes while you are killing demons, and the careful way the tunes fade out once you managed to kill them all and get out of danger.
    OVERALL
This game is a 9/10 for me. I do not use a perfect score because I think there are some improvements in pacing. For the first two thirds of the game you fell the progress, but by the last 3 missions the levels are basically designed to throw you every upgrade and consumable you missed. I played on a 100% exploration run and my suit was pretty much upgraded by when I was about 70% of the campaign, and I am sad to say that there are more upgrades on the map, than the ones you need to be 100%. I would have liked a more calculated experience. If you want a 100% suit and weapon upgrades, you need to do 100% combat and exploration on every level.

Essentially a mess of a game trying to create a “thinking man’s action game” (said by the lead dev) out of what should be adrenaline focused, fast pace action. Ultimately what comes down to is that it doesn’t accomplish its own objective either because you will be just memorizing weaknesses and prioritize the high targets while keeping few fodders around for ammo instead of killing them indiscriminately like a Doom Slayer should be. They created a terrible mechanic for a game that didn’t need it. And to create the said delusion, they limit your ammo and your freedom to play. And to solve the low ammo issue, they introduced another dumb mechanic of infinitely respawning enemies. This approach is akin to say, The Elder Scrolls Six game hypothetically forcing players to do the main quest line first in order to promote “story driven game” by devs—destroying what made the previous series great. 0/10 to balance the fanboys.

Game tries to capitalise on the "edge" but the edge is dull, so many things are copy-pasted from Doom 2016 reboot it's hard to justify it as a separate game.
Story is alright for the first half too, but then you're treated with Doomguy past which takes away from the experience rather than adds to it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can only really complain about... 3 aspects of the game. Everything else, brilliant, even as I was being stupid about a "puzzle".

1st aspect of the game, I didn't really enjoy the 5 purple goo portions. Everywhere else you're free to run about as fast as you'd like. It just felt like an arbitrary addition to the game, but as it was only a handful of sections, it's okay. Just... It didn't feel right.

2nd aspect, the Kahn Maykr fight was... not as epic as it should've felt. The arena's getting flooded with fire and enemies are shooting at you, and that's fine, but the music falls short. It's intense, but it's action horror intense rather than the bloodpumping music that plays during combat encounters. I guess it applies to the final boss as well, but it fitted more there.

3rd aspect... Marauders... Hot damn, those **** are unnecessarily tough. Getting too close and you get a face full of shotgun. Getting too far away and you get a face full of axe. Shooting them leads to your shots ricocheting off their shield, and they have a spectral dog that has a wonky hit animation that somehow manages to bite me in the ass 9/10 times. They have what feels like 2 seconds of opportunity where you can get some damage in, but doing not enough damage means it's back to dodging and weaving. Getting a Glory Kill on these bastardised demons FEELS great, though, and those Glory Kills make you feel like you're in the mind of the Slayer himself.

For some reason people are complaining about short ammo capacity. You get a Chainsaw before you burn through your starting 16 shotgun shells, and it's on recharge, meaning it's always there when you need it to fill your ammo reserves. If you somehow manage to run out of ammo before getting the Chainsaw and not being able to progress because of it... Please tell me how you managed that.

Coming from someone who played DOOM and DOOM II back in the day, this game is a goddamned masterpiece. Tons of misinformation in the negative reviews which I will clear up:

    - Low ammo is not an issue because you have the ability to replenish ammo at *any time* using a weapon you get at the very start: the chainsaw. If you want to carry more ammo in general, you can double your reserves by putting points into the ammo stat via Sentinel Crystals. If you are out of or low on ammo, it is your own fault.

    - Platforming is tight, easy to understand, and an absolute blast. It controls extremely well and doesn’t even punish you with death if you fall off of a ledge. It adds a lot to your mobility that makes combat encounters far more interesting. It also prevents the game from being a one-dimensional arena shooter.

    - Combat does require quick reflexes and strategy. Just like in the original games, you have to keep moving. The game is extremely clear about this. If you merely pay an ounce of attention to the tutorials peppered throughout, you will quickly master the combat dance and learn which tool is right for each job. You cannot use the same 1 or 2 guns, and that’s on purpose. You couldn’t do that in the original DOOM games either so what did you expect?

    - Some complain that the game is too colorful. These people seemingly haven’t played the originals which were loaded with bright blues, reds, and greens. The environments are still gore-ey when they want to be, but I don’t personally see the harm in making levels distinct with more than just one single hellish theme.

    - There is far more of a narrative this time than in Doom 2016, but it is delightfully fascinating and makes the journey exponentially more epic. If you really really hate stories, all cutscenes are skippable.

So anyways, ignore the naysayers and embrace this game. It is easily the best FPS in the last decade and you’d be sorely missing out by not playing it.
