For a FPS, this game is epic. It's like a mix between a Souls-borne challenge with the usual Doom amazing-ness. I own the Steam version with Denuvo even, completely maxed out, 8700k and 2080ti at 3440x1440 100Hz and it sits at a locked 100fps all the time without the faintest hint of a dip or stutter or any issue anywhere, anytime. Game runs so good it's almost kind of boring not needing to mess with settings, I hope they add ray tracing at some point to make it more demanding. Can't possibly praise this game or the developers more. Love you Hugo and Marty (and every single other person at the studio who aren't in a ton of YouTube videos!!) Wish you guys weren't tied down by Bethesda honestly. Can't wait for more! Expand

Both it and DOOM 2016 and very good and I highly recommend playing both if you're an FPS fan. These are exactly the sorts of games that I want.

That said, I like DOOM 2016 a bit better overall myself. In terms of story/atmosphere, DOOM 2016 > DOOM Eternal for "context"/story/lore -- really liked the "villain" in 2016 (they were arguably right depending on how you look at it and they were smart -- took steps to mitigate risk/etc). DOOM Eternal Lore is more like Diablo lore this time around seems to me.

Mechanically, there are also two things I'd consider "regressions" from 2016. In 2016, you could animation cancel melee between shotgun blasts for example so it was something I eventually got into muscle memory and I actually really liked being able to do with different guns/between abilities/etc. In Eternal though, melee has been changed so that it essentially "does nothing" unless you're using your "finisher" or the "blood punch" feature -- so, animation cancelling doesn't do anything since the melee does -- it seems -- 0 or close to 0 damage outside those circumstances.

Also, the chainsaw -- in 2016, on Nightmare/the harder difficulties you could strategically save the chainsaw for "bigger" threats/strategic difficult fights since it could be used on all enemies while in Eternal you can only chainsaw "basic" enemies and I actually hate that. Still, overall the game is still awesome and there are of course improvements in other areas and it runs really really well -- even totally maxed out at 1440p for me (though I do have a pretty beefy rig) -- like, zero stuttering and it's maybe the smoothest game I've ever played.

TL;DR: Game is excellent and I recommend playing it. Also, go play DOOM 2016! Game is a masterpiece you should definitely pick up and play too.

PLEASE ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN. I feel like a lot of people either misunderstand this game or had unrealistic expectations. I found the game well balanced and intriguing. Doom Eternal expands on Doom 2016 in gameplay and story and does so in a way that adds new depth to the saga and ties in the history of the entire franchise very well.
There is more map navigation, which was certainly in its predecessor, but the incorporation of climbing and the use of the dash was a smooth yet challenging new way to give the levels a sense of greater scale, whereas in Doom 2016 the use of double jumping and climbing onto ledges kept the game maps tighter. This may have been the best choices for both games given their respective settings.
The combat has been tweaked in such a way that it almost forces a player to use there entire arsenal, rather than just a few favorite weapons. This is done by giving the enemies weak point that can best be exploited by certain weapons with certain modifications. And the use of melee is a must in order to preserve ammo for when it is needed. No longer is the relentless "spray and pray" type of gameplay rewarded as much as it was in Doom 2016.
With the evolved combat system and map navigation Doom Eternal requires more critical thinking that Doom 2016, which may tend to annoy some players. I can understand that. In the beginning I noticed that my style of play that I used for Doom 2016 didn't really work, and it continuously forced me to adapt.
If I have to be critical I would say that the story, as it gradually unfolds, only really starts to make sense after the half way point. Until then I found myself asking, "Why am I here and doing all of this again? Why am I going after these hell priests? Where is all of this going? The developers seemed to make the story a bit more convoluted by trying to tie the game in with the original pc games of the 90s and Doom 64. I think the franchise would have been better off treating Doom 2016 as a completely fresh reboot, whereas Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal function as a reboot in graphics and gameplay only mirroring Doom and Doom 2, so it makes the whole thing seem a bit strange. Since they are both a reboot and sequels at the same time.
Still, I just played the whole thing from start to finish and had a lot of fun. Which is ultimately the primary goal of any game.

Developers tried to attract as many players as they can, so they've just stuffed this game with everything, but ended up with just pile of garbage. Arcade shooter, mixed with mario brothers jumping, with mobile games grinding, points, bonuses, etc, with moba silly skins, and flavored it with hellish surroundings. Level design is mediocre, invisible walls here and there, but not where they need to be, which was mitigated by respawning. Constant mix of level styles is eye-poping, decorations and decals have no logic whatsoever, seems more like levels was randomly generated from presets. Once you finished yet another battle and stopped for a second, you realize that you feel almost zero immersion. This game is ok if you want to strain your spinal reflexes for hour or two after work, but nothing more. I've recently played Black Mesa and sometimes I forgot to eat and I underslept for three days - this is how good game should be played. Expand

Graphics are Outstanding, weapons have been re-made and all of them look better then in 2016 in my opinion, specially the Plasma Rifle, god I love that. The background area In some missions is simply out of this world, just look around on the very first mission " Hell on Earth "

Battlemode is ok, I'm afraid it might die in the future tho just like DOOM 2016 Deathmatch.

My only complain is that there is some unnecessary platforming that can be really annoying specially for a DOOM game.

After 20+ hours and the final battle I felt literally exhausted. The gameplay pace is insane especially on the higher difficulties. Demons slaying is super satisfying. New strategic layer demanding using different weapons against different monsters/weak points is an improvement imo.

Loved it's art direction, color palette, arcade-ish approach to pick-ups and UI. If you want some true si-fi horror go (re)play Dead Space, where you are constantly haunted... In Doom Eternal they are haunted, because a Doom Slayer entered the facility!
Loved both Doom 2016 & Eternal but find the latter more fun and addicting.
Why 8/10? For two reasons: forced platforming/jumping often annoys, and the game is too short for the money (paid 99 eur for deluxe). More end game activities and/or progression would be appreciated. I know it sounds like a heresy to orthodox gamers, but RPG elements & loot would fit perfectly such game as Doom Eternal. That would truly make it eternal!

I've 6+ hours in Doom Eternal so far and... it's just so boring. You don't play Doom for the story as such, but Doom 2016's story was paced perfectly to build tension and the ominous atmosphere. Doom Eternal's story has made me cringe repeatedly. They've taken Doom and turned it into a weird satanic cartoon.

So, ok, let's ignore the story and get to the action. Despite overhauling the weaponry so you can now set demons on fire and chainsaw more frequently, it's somehow less visceral. The chainsaw in Doom 2016 was a great tool you had to deploy tactically for great pay off. Eternal's is just another process you have to go through from time to time; it's necessary work, not a fun reward.

Just avoid this game and play 2016.

Doom Eternal's enemies each have weak points, more effective weapons against them, and you have a more diverse arsenal. ( i.e. types of grenades, flamethrower which releases armor from enemies, grappling hook in the super shotgun) All of this makes for a gameplay which forces you to THINK. And this part is very important. I even saw an interview in which Hugo Martin said this, and i didnt understand what he meant. Unlike Doom 2016 this game makes you decide at every moment what to use, because each enemy and situation requires a different weapon or part of your arsenal and that makes the gameplay entertaining and engaging. You cant go using the same weapon the whole game and expect to survive.

We seem to be riding this trend of making these games hard as possible for esport players = good in the past 4 years. Why make it so hard? put more difficulties for those no life esport lovers but make it the same as doom 2016 difficulty for the normal difficulty. It was perfect the way it was (Why change what is not broken). Making games to hard for ppl makes ppl not buy the next one because it limits ppl that have jobs and don't have time to put into these games. I won't be buying the next game and I'm about done buying games all together if this trend don't end. Dif not buying new systems either. If you esport tryhards wants a game they need to make their own ******* games and systems. Games are not careers for the majority of gamers. If you want games that is for ppl with careers than make your own ******* systems to play on. Sorry for the rant I'm just so tired of games being made for these no lifes. Casual gamers can't even get a single player game anymore because it's got to be so balanced and difficult for these COD, Fortnight, and League of legend multiplayer fanboys to have fun playing a dif game for once. One last thing I want to mention is jumping. Why is there so much jumping in this game like it's a platformer. This is Doom I want to shoot and run and that's it. If I wanted to play mario or halo I would buy those games. This is why games as a whole has lost so much from it's fanbase and most ppl has stopped playing games. Why can't I one-punch stagger base zombies or imps any more? I can punch a concrete wall, but have to bunch zombies half a dozen times to stagger, 2016 they were legit fodder. In 2016 keycards were attached to bodies and had a story, here the first one I found was just... floating in a garage. I feel like rather than continue to do new things, id felt a need to bring in some old (or antiquated in this case) elements. I find it hard to see this real and sometimes surreal apocalypse setting, followed by a neon green 1up in an elevator shaft. Adding climbing while removing crouching seems odd, and why is your icon on the green map ALSO green? In 2016 you were yellow. Thank you for sharing this video, I think part of my problem comes from having played the previous title all week, so some of the new/odd-feeling design choices hit harder. I miss punching, though.

Tl;Dr: They tried to hard to do some weird stuff, and it hurts the game coming from 2016.

If you're looking for a deep and thought-provoking gaming experience that changes your outlook on life, look elsewhere. However, if you want a fast-paced, visceral shooter full of non-stop action and outrageous violence, you can't do better than Doom Eternal. If you liked 2016's offering you will love this follow up. It's a hell of a good time.

Like Jason Statham’s character in Crank, Doom Eternal needs adrenaline every waking second.
