    Doom Eternal plays like this:
    arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - etc.

The arenas go like this: running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, change weapon, running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, change weapon, running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, etc. - very annoying

The Jumping goes like this: jump, dash, jump, jump, search for a key, double dash jump, miss the ledge, DIE, start over - dash, double jump, miss the item, DIE, start over - dash, double jump, etc. - until you make it to the other side - awful.

    GOOD:
    - great GFX
    - great sound and music

    BAD
    - the jumping is annoying - like you have to finish homework first to continue with the game - this is the Doom Slayer, not Lara Croft
    - slime pits where you can only walk very slowly and not jump
    - acid pits where you have to swim around and figuring out some puzzle while losing health
    - NO AMMO - constantly no ammo, and the big enemies need hundreds of shots.. also very annoying
    - after finishing an annoying endboss (e.g. the guy with the shield), he appears later in the game in the arenas - so you have to fight him again (and again) with dozens of other monsters attacking at the same time.. and you run in circles, with NO AMMO, constantly getting hit by some of the other monsters, which gain more and more speed later in the game
    - you have guns with two functions, you have grenades, flame, ice, jump, dash, punch, chainsaw... - way too much stuff for a game where dozens of monsters run towards you, and you have to act quickly to not get hit constantly.
    - you constanly have to change weapons in the arenas (because there is NO AMMO) - this takes time and is super annoying
    - many of the weapons take way too long to power up, or are too weak, too slow, etc. - but you can not discarde these weapons (which nobody needs) - and you have to constantly switch through all weapons during the fight
    - later fights go on and on and on and on... a big boss appears.. then another one, then another one... and then you get stuck at a corner, or didn't catch a ledge - and you DIE in two seconds - and have to play the arena all over again - man, what a waste of time...
    - later arenas are only button smashers and running and jumping, dashing, double jumping and shooting with NO AMMO - the monsters get faster, and you get hit all the time - no strategy at all - running in circles, jumping, shooting - while monsters and more monsters spawn all the time.
    - no satisfaction in completing a level or the game - after every mission I've hoped that this is the end of the game, because the fun factor playing this annoyance was very low.

I don't know who likes to play this game - annoying jump sequences, arenas where you win by running in circles while randomly smashing buttons, where you constantly have NO AMMO, and get constantly hit.

This game could have been great, but playing Doom Eternal is equivalent to work without pay - it makes no fun due to constant jumping and running in circles, it wastes your time, and is constantly annoying.

What a waste... don't buy it - Doom Eternal is no fun at all.

    Cheers

    This game is a masterpiece.

Looks awesome. The action is awesome. It is very nostalgic with many references from the 90s games and the game itself is a tribute to the game that made FPS be what it is today. So much that you can actually play it in Doom Eternal, though it is hidden. The lore is cool, but I dont think they should with that night sentinel medieval thing too much.

The lore is cool, but I dont think they should with that night sentinel medieval thing too much. I think they should stick with the futuristic space marine with big badass guns thing vs demons and all sorts of unholy evil creatures stuff.

The ambience, immersion, and tension is better with DOOM 2016. Doom Eternal also made me feel tense whe playing the first playthrough, but not because of huge immersion and dark things happening there, but because i knew this game was harder and the many ways it could just screw me throwing multiple enemies with new and daring mechanics all at once. It was a thrill because i knew it is chalenging ad tha would require much from me. But this game still does a great job, though with a different aproach to that.

Too many mechanics should overwhelm some people, but i think the core audience just loves it. Particularly the dash I use all the time because im required to in order to dominate the combat, but i dont like it. Makes it feel like playing Tracer from Overwatch, which has a totally different feel to every Doom game. I dislike that and would like to play Doom just with that awesome classic really fast pacing Doomguy's regular walk has. Also having monkeybars around every corner further breaks immersion and doesnt feel like it's something that belongs there. The action is good, but it doesnt feel right.

Battlemode i found a bit sucky. I usually just play it to complete events and thats it. DOOM 2016 had a much better multiplayer. I reckon they didnt follow the same model so people would maybe go to Quake Champions for that.

There a few bugs, most of them seems to be visual. Skins dont work very properly. If u wanna make ur skins work right for aome reason u gotta switch off the weapon skins. They have a really good variety of skins both at the present but also upcoming for a game that doesnt monetise that.

Anyways best action I ever had the pleasure of playing. Best FPS I ever played along with Doom 2016. Both this and DOOM 2016 each with a different feel, although most of it is the same.

If you haven't played Doom 2016, play that instead. If you have played Doom 2016, go and play it again.

I am quite disappointed with this game. It feels like they took the good stuff from Doom 2016 and just decided to tack more stuff on top of it. They seem to think that would make it better. Well, this is a great case of less is more. Doom 2016 felt cool. It felt slick and polished.

Doom 2016 felt cool. It felt slick and polished. It made you feel like a no-nonsense bad-ass.

Doom Eternal feels more like a single-player arena-shooter. Bright and colorful. Wacky and goofy. It's not all bad, but I just couldn't take it seriously when DoomGuy suddenly grabs hold of a wall and crawls on it like a spider. What!? And the platforming doesn't even try to disguise itself. It's literally platforms, in the air, you have to jump across. And swinging poles and... It's just so silly.

Monsters are redesigned a bit. For some reason they have all new faces. And it makes them look more cartoonish. I love how the monsters fall apart slowly when shooting them. It's the one thing from Doom Eternal I am absolutely in love with. That's a valuable edition to D16's design.

I don't care for the shooting mechanic design. There's too much stuff to keep track of. And you basically have to play the game a certain way to win because the uses of the different "tools" are so specific. Upgrades don't feel like they really matter beyond the weapon mods. It feels more like you are removing restrictions, than upgrading equipment. It just feels poorly designed. Like they forgot to design the upgrade properly and instead just decided to remove everything that makes him badass, only to let you slowly unlock it all again throughout the game. I couldn't believe how restrictive the game feels at the beginning. It's just no fun.

And the exploring is no fun either this time around. Why? I have no idea! I loved exploring the levels in D16, it was part of what I did on each map. Now? I just want to get on with the game so I can finish it.

I am about 12 hours into the game, and I've simply lost all interest in it. I'm not even sure I want to complete it.

In DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Here they have simplified it for some reason. Even after looking at the selection of a new weapon, before you took it by actually lifting it from the body or picking it up from the floor. This gave realism, immersion. And now some ridiculous weighing icons in the air. This kills the whole atmosphere of the dive. AndIn DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Doom Eternal is a very imaginative and unique take on the FPS genre which I can confidently say is unlike anything I've ever played before. The issue is, that includes it's predecessor. While Doom (2016) was this incredible romp to hell and back which managed to capture an atmosphere and tone which was perfectly immersive, grounded, and visceral, in both it's gameplay and visual aesthetic, Doom Eternal looks and feels much more like a cartoon. Not only is the art direction, writing, and general atmosphere much less realistic and consequential, but the gameplay is also so over the top and fundamentally different than the previous game that it both fails to capture that same satisfaction the former had conveyed, as well as also completely removing the player from any immersion they had in the game's universe.

Doom Eternal's gameplay is much less inspired by the classic shooters of the 90's than 2016 was; with a heavy focus on scarcity of ammo and health pickups, it forces the player to constantly micromanage all of their weapons and abilities; exploiting enemies to get whatever specific resource they need, while constantly waiting for certain abilities to recharge. In the first half of the game where you're still collecting all of the weapons and abilities you constantly feel underpowered and overwhelmed. The game doesn't really get to be all that much fun until a little over halfway through when you've finally both acquired most of the weapons and abilities and have learned how to use them; understanding how to juggle every type of grenade, learning which enemies can produce the most resources under which specific circumstances, and learning how rare each type of ammo is. Unfortunately, by the time you've internalized most of this, the game will be mostly over, and there won't be a whole lot of time left to actually enjoy this system.

Then there is Id's confusing decision to implement Mario styled platforming into the game, complete with floating platforms which drop when you step on them, and spinning ropes of fire. The platforming is serviceable, when you get it down it does have a good flow to it, but it really doesn't feel necessary in this franchise, and it doesn't gel with the previous game's style. Then again almost nothing in Eternal does.

Finally the art direction and story are just completely divorced from what we saw in 2016. The bright colors and frequent comic relief completely erode the visceral feel of the game; and everything looks like it's under a white florescent lighting, even if it doesn't make any sense in the context of the scene. Meanwhile a lot of returning enemies have been redesigned and honestly just look worse; with some of the more intimidating demons of the last game now looking cartoonish and ugly in all the wrong ways. Then there's the story, which on one hand feels like it had more effort put into it than the last game, yet it somehow feels much more thin. Plot points and characters come out of nowhere, it makes no sense without reading the lore, and it honestly just is not good. It's supplemental, technically having effort put into it, but honestly not having any emotional thru line or compelling characters.

All things considered Doom Eternal is a fun and imaginative game which I can tell the developers had fun working on and I cannot say I've seen anything like it; but in my opinion they changed so much that almost all of what I adored about the last game is gone. If this game existed in a vacuum it would be an 8 or 9, but this game is so disappointingly different from its predecessor that it just fails to be a sequel.

Expand

As someone who grew up with the original DOOM in the 90s, I found myself missing the gloomy feeling of wandering through levels with the eerie MIDI music playing and hearing demons breathing and lurking in the shadows ahead. DOOM Eternal feels a lot more chaotic and intense compared to the original. I can see how some would like that, but for me it is just too much.

The jumping puzzles in the game are well designed and satisfying to complete, but the problem I have is that there are just way too many of them. It would be more tolerable if you encountered maybe one every hour or two, but it seems like I'm constantly running into them every 10 minutes of gameplay or less, which leads to a feeling of annoyance. The violence is also really over the top. My girlfriend watched me play it and was appalled by how disgusting the gore is. To each their own, but I have to wonder about the type of people who enjoy things this violent.

The platforming is a bit frustrating, and I don't know what to think about the extended fights where you kill mindless zombies to refill health and ammo. It's an interesting design, but for me I ended up not looking forward to fighting hordes of demons, where in previous DOOMs, I couldn't wait for the next fight.

Anyways, overall it's a good game. I put in about 8 hours or so and got my money's worth, but I can't find myself wanting to finish the game.

Although there are now some more story elements and platforming involved, the gameplay remains the bread and butter. I implore anyone to play this on the harder difficulties (at the very least on Ultra Violence) because it will force you to learn all the tools at your disposal, your enemies’ weaknesses, and really make you think what weapon to use for each situation and what enemies you want to take out first, which makes every fight an intense and thrilling one. You might come out of each battle just barely alive, but it’s incredibly fun and rewarding when you come out on top. Best of all, it does a fantastic job of making you feel like this unrelenting force; it’s pure bliss. The game does a great job of breaking up each fight with a little bit of story, some really fluid and fun platforming, and of course, exploration to find collectibles and upgrades. The story is no way intrusive, you can dive into the lore as much as you want or get right into the action. The story is there to serve one purpose, and that is to show just how much of a badass the Doom Slayer is.

My only critique is the aesthetics of the menus and HUD. It’s a lot more colorful and vibrant this time around, but I prefer Doom 2016’s menus. I didn’t mind it and was never distracting at any point, but it’s just something to take note of.

Doom Eternal is just an awesome game. You can clearly see how much passion went into making this. Everything from the graphics, music, gameplay, story and everything else is just so well done and on point. Do yourself a favor, and pick this one up!

Lastly not too fond of the whole arena battle thing, that's not a Doom game.

    Not bad, but overall disappointing.

If you are not sure of buying the game, there is no other way, but to spoil the story by watching other people's gameplays, since apparently there are people who bought the game without knowing what was going to come in the game or what They knew and that's why they complain that `` It was not what I expected '' and other absurd things like that, when in the quake-con and E3 they showed in gameplays that the dash and the tubes to hang you, among other things, were already implemented in the game . It is one thing to say that you do not like mechanics and your opinion is well respected, but another thing to say the game is horrible just because you do not like it or because yes, that is to be mediocre. The murderous amok simulator returns and is even more furious than before. Fantastic presentation and great fighting system are harmed only by annoying platforming sequences. [Issue#302]

If you're looking for a deep and thought-provoking gaming experience that changes your outlook on life, look elsewhere. However, if you want a fast-paced, visceral shooter full of non-stop action and outrageous violence, you can't do better than Doom Eternal. If you liked 2016's offering you will love this follow up. It's a hell of a good time.

Like Jason Statham’s character in Crank, Doom Eternal needs adrenaline every waking second. So long as you drown hordes of demons in their own blood, it feels like a perfect GOTY contender, but during quiet moments, Doom Eternal withers and forces you to ponder unpleasant questions. id Software needs to course-correct, otherwise we’ll be playing Super Doom Slayer’s Bros in a few years.
