It's aight. You'll get what you know. Not as good as Grim Dawn.

But seriously there is no need for being a fanboy, nor is it the worst game ever. Obviously review bombing going on here.

Played during both Beta, and played pre-season. The Betas were fine, up to lvl 25 the game felt good and it had potential to be better. simply not fun with all the changes that were implemented with the latest patch (longer cooldowns, less damage, QoL nerfs). Definitely regret spending $100.

In the open world you've been given a horse to ride about, but it is so buggy and janky you'd rather walk. The mob count is so sparse and objectives are so spread out that stopping to kill trash packs on the way is such a time sink it seems pointless. Then if you do stop and kill mobs the items and gold dropped are more like clutter than anything. Most of the time I don't bother picking up the items or the gold. Not picking up gold in a video game? That should be enough of a design flaw to get anyone's attention.

Everything in the game scales with your level. Killing a mob at level 1 feels the same at level 50. You don't feel stronger. The cost of items at the vendor scale too with everything being just out of your price range with the gold in your bags until you have gear that is so much better you would never use the vendor. So, why have one selling me blue items I'll never want?

The dungeons are empty. You can walk about for literally a minute and not encounter anything. Then when you do find something it's like 6 mobs. Then your resources all drain before you find the next tiny pack.

The dungeons are also insanely repetitive in both map design and objectives. I just completed 4 of the exact same instance. Same map, same mobs, same objective. Not the same dungeon 4 times but 4 different ones that ended up being exactly the same. The objectives are really frustrating. Normally you're picking up an item or using a lever as far East as possible then the next one is as far West as possible then returning to the middle to a barrier that has dropped. Pray there aren't 3 or more objectives blocking your progress or you will be running in circles backtracking over empty areas that you've previously cleared. Sound fun to run for minutes through an empty dungeon over and over and over? I don't think anyone that makes the game plays the game.

All the running about just feels pointless. You're looking for demons and can't find them. And when you do, you don't care because they don't drop much of anything. It all feels like the game is set up just to keep you logged in and inflate their engagement metrics.

They also implemented some hot garbage called renown from World of Warcraft. It is reputation with minor rewards with each zone in the game. Apparently, you need to re-grind it every season. Hard, 100% pass. This alone is why I won't be playing any more. Zero interest in re-doing the same boring content repeatedly. I'm here to save the world and kill demons not re-activate the town portals.

The last unforgivable transgression is the 'battle pass". I'm a sucker and purchased the pre-sale of the game and forgot it had one month's free battle pass. I was drilling in the menus for season one to see how much it cost and what the rewards would be. The game automatically cashed in my freebie with no confirmation. Thankfully it was free as I would have been furious to purchase an actual battle pass. It comes with nearly nothing. Some crappy "transmogs" and a mount I'll never use. It further insults your intelligence and wallet by giving you some in game currency. Is it platinum? Who cares what it is called as they give you less than the amount to purchase the cheapest item in the in-game store.

One of Diablo's core tenants has been hardcore. I wouldn't bother much unless you are a true die hard. They seem to be trying to make the game an MMO and the loading between zones will lag out for several seconds just moving about on a solid internet connection. Enough time to get gibbed by some trash for sure. There is no reason hard core players shouldn't be able to play in an offline mode.

There is no in-game communication to speak of. No global channel. Very hard to find new friends. There is a clunky interact menu to wave at people or inspect their gear. And there is a guild finder, but the few times I checked it there weren't many offerings.

With all that negativity there are also some great points. The campaign is fantastic with the exception of the minority 'girl power' forced narrative. The art, video and sound work are all outstanding. The cut scenes are great and smashing a mob into 1000 bits feels immersive with deep crushing sounds. The implementation of the Butcher is awesome!

Unless you just have to play now with your friends, i'd wait and buy it on sale. The campaign is worth the price of a movie ticket, but not $70. Maybe they will fix some of the systems, but i doubt it based on their track record.

The game feels like you're always climbing a mountain with 100x the gravity of the earth. It's always a struggle to work your way up, and it's not even rewarding when you make it to the top with BIS gears.

Season 1 feels rushed and like nothing has changed; they just added a quest and those gems that add a little to the mechanics. What's even more amusing is that their battle pass is the worst of all battle passes.

I don't know what the Devs are thinking. it's so bad at the current state.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game needed a minimum of 1 to 2 years of development. Buyer beware this is not a completed title.

There is no end game content, you spam dungeons over and over and over. The games overall balancing is not very good, many mechanics will one shot kill you.

Blizzard likely rushed this game due to poor world of warcraft dragon flight sales.

What D4 is doing though, is slowing progress on every corner, dungeon variety is bad and on topside you can grind neither level nor gears effectively so what you basically do is you feel slow as a turtle and sort through trash.
i'm glad it's over for me now, maybe i'l revisit this game later...much later.

D3 was bad in the beginning, where are the people that could have learned from those mistakes and made it better

    Story was interesting and engaging.
    Cinematics are fantastic.
Initial start to the game is generally well paced.
    Graphics and animations are polished.
The “world aesthetics” are pleasing and detailed.

Unfortunately this is where the good stuff ends. The worst of all, most of these negatives are not immediately obvious until AT LEAST 8h of gameplay. So no chance of getting a refund.

Most of the things that would make an ARPG a “good” title, are somehow missing or in a bad state. To the point where they’ve actively gone backwards from previous titles, and are missing core features that exist in any other lesser budget ARPG that already exists.

-Scaling mechanic. Interesting concept, terribly executed.
    -Never feeling truly ‘powerful’.
-Enemies scaling at a faster rate than you gain power from loot drops.
    -Woeful loot itemisation.
-Affixes, suffixes and legendary aspects that are so specific in their bonuses or activation criteria, that they introduce a level of complexity and build reliance that provide no true build diversity. This means that 99% of ‘good loot’ that drops, is not suitable for your build.
-Extremely lackluster skill tree compared to other ARPGs, and even significantly less options than Diablo 3.
-Paragon board that appears impressive, but in reality is just bland, grindy and uninspired. Providing you the ‘illusion’ of choice.
-No loot filter! (how is this missing?! seriously!)
    -Extremely grindy
-Current dev team has made it clear they WANT you to feel ‘weak’.
-Constant nerfs to anything that may feel ‘enjoyable’.
    -Very specific pre-determined ‘builds’
-Very little options for any kind of theory crafting or true build diversity.
-Basic quality of life features missing that should be a standard inclusion.
-Poorly designed and unengaging end-game loop.

With the lessons learnt from Diablo 3, and the ability to take inspiration from some of the innovations of Grim Dawn, Last Epoch, Inquisitor: Martyr and Path of Exile (+ others). The current state of Diablo 4 is entirely unacceptable, particularly for a AAA studio like Activision Blizzard.

This is easily the worst ROI I’ve had on a game in many many years.

Past level 50, the fun kind of stops, the story is a nice experience, but the rest of the game is just very grindy for no real reason. Tbh, I think this is because of the repetitiveness of mechanics and inexistence of a crafting system. You just roll a dice and hope it lands on numbers that are better than what you already have. Because you have no agency on your gear progression, and the mechanics being so repetitive past the story, you just end up grinding mindlessly for your next drop, which is to be honest, is kind of boring.
And I feel weird for saying that while I have been able to grind 100s of maps on poe each season since years. The main issue for me is that Diablo 4 didn't innovate enough, it often feels like an earlier or worse version of other ARPGS. For example, I had a much better experience with last epoch, which brought many interesting mechanics to the table (damn it, all ARPGS should give us a customizable loot filter). Diablo 4 is too grindy to be casual and too simple to be exciting for a more hardcore community.
Overall, I liked the story and how simple it is to put a build together. But in an ideal world, I would pay the game between 40 and 50 euros and only play until level 50. So far, the experience after that is not worth it.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table.
