I don't know if it's just me, but this game is just plain old boring.
I'm level 46, did not finish the main quest, and I already feel like I don't want to play anymore.
    - Campaign is boring. - Cross-platform is limiting what can be done on PC - Micro-transactions (goodbye good looking armors unless you pay even more than the initial very high price) - Mob scaling makes it unrewarding

Diablo IV beautifully sums up everything wrong with modern gaming, through corporate greed, uninteresting writing, bland environment, few skills, from which even fewer are actually useful, poor mob variety, lazy and repetitive dungeon design, redundant albeit huge open world that feels barren and the list goes on.

I was really looking forward to Diablo IV, naturally I preordered the 100€ version. And what did I get? Somewhat decent graphics, somewhat decent optimization, a huge open world (which is not necessarily positive, if devs don't know how to make it alive), some cosmetic items and a couple of days of early access, which is ridiculous anyway imo. And that is about it for what I got on the positive side.

Of course, greedy Blizzard was a LOT more generous on the negative side. What did I get there, you ask? Well, I got: in-game cosmetics shop, with OUTRAGEOUS prices, like 25€ for armor skin. Seriously, Blizzard??!!?? And 15€ for a horse skin? Really? Horse not included, btw. Lol. Really? One extra line of code too much for 15€ of hard earned real cash? I'm going to stop with the shop now for my own good, because I feel my blood pressure rising.

What else did I get? I didn't get to play a demon hunter for whatever reason. Ok, that's fine. I got balancing of classes after first few days of gameplay in a single player game, because we cannot allow any fun, naturally; I got always online in a single player supposed-to-be immersive game. I don't know about you, but it is kind of immersion breaking for me when SirButtsalot passes me in the game world. I also got a bunch of abilities in my skill tree, which are just there for the sake of number. Thea are useless. In fact, if you want to do respectable damage and survive, you are pretty much stuck with a couple of builds. An that's it.

I also got a tiny inventory, not even close enough for everything, also because reasons. Probably they will try and sell me more spaces for 40€ in their shop.

I also go no endgame. None. A few repetitive dungeons, gear that does not make me stronger, but rather weaker, because enemies are level scaling to me, making me effectively weaker with every hard grinded level.

I will stop here, but trust me, I could go on. For example: why mounts in a dungeon crawler? Why open world in a dungeon crawler? Why no variety of dungeons in a dungeon crawler? Why no attractive loot in a dungeon crawler? Why no Diablo in a Diablo game? Anyway, I'm out. Don't buy! Do NOT buy! Do not give them the satisfaction!

I had high hopes for this game. Now that I've played it a bit, I'm not quite sure what to think of it. My biggest criticism is the progression system. It just doesn't feel good. In Diablo 2 (Resurrected) every stat had a meaning and you felt it immediately. In D4 everything is kind of just random numbers. It just feels wrong.

The graphics are beautiful. The story is interesting. However, if you want to play the game effectively, you have to skip most parts of the side quests, which are an important part of the world and how it feels. You lose a lot if you want to play the game effectively. If you want to experience the world, you waste a lot without getting anything in return. Trading is nearly disabled, which is a missed potential and at least for me close to be a killer of that game.

My conclusion: D2R feels worlds better than D4. I leave out the comparison to D3, because I didn't like this game at the time either. I preferred to keep playing D2(R) at that time.

Finally I would like to mention the shop: luckily it only contains cosmetics, but for the price of a whole game. These prices are completely exorbitant. Skins that can be found in the game are limited. So Blizzard forces you to run around looking like a garbage can. You used to be able to earn something like that in games in the past. That was the point of the games. But today, the point of games seems to be buying stuff for real money rather than progressing it. Where's the fun in that?

    My short summary:
    Graphics: 9/10 - Excellent & Immersive
Soundtrack: 9/10 - Just lovely as always
Progression System: 1/10 - Horizontal and not rewarding at all
Difficulty: 7/10 - Moderate and adjustable. But in some cases just unfair and disappointing.
Story: 5/10 - Would feel better if the game wouldn't punish you for playing it.
Multiplayer: 2/10 - Forced, Stealing immersion, and thats it. No meaningful trading. No real reason for it. And if you are playing in a group it is laggy.
Availability: 1/10 - Always forced to be online. No chance to play in a village. When Services are down, no game play is possible.
Price-Value ratio: 5/10 - It is a good game, where you can spend some time for one playthrough. But for that it is quite expensive.

    Sum: 4/10

    What is good:
Story (the main story takes you from 1st city and gradually move to all other cities with interesting actions)
A lot of references to 2nd part (Meshif, Andariel, Duriel and so on)
    Open world
    New dungeons systems
A lot of generating activities in the world
    Video scenes and actor voices
New reputation system for all your fighters
    Sounds and music

    What is not good:
Balancing with autoleveling system. Im not really sure that this is only one decision for online games, they could invent something more interesting.
Online. You need ethernet connection for playing (even for main story, not additional actions). I don't mind against other players in my world, but servers lag sometimes and my ethernet connection sometimes breaking, so game returns my progress.

In general i really enjoyed the project like in 2005. Thank you, Blizzard.

This game is FAR below average, at least if you still have some slimmer of hope that any Triple A game can have a remotely successful launch in the modern era. Forced online only is just...it's inconceivable that a collection of people could be so short sighted and ignorant to the experience that their player base actually wants. This is even worse when you take into consideration how little you actually interact with other players.

Outside of general performance and server issues, the gameplay isn't particularly enjoyable any time you come across "difficult" content. At various points in the game, DIablo displays the ability to have bosses impose a real challenge against players without spamming them with constant, unending, hard CC status effects. The game is capable of providing that challenge with BOSSES. Regular elites and higher level non-boss enemies though? Prepare to spend all of your time frozen, stunned, and more while staring blankly at your screen waiting for your turn to play the game that you paid top dollar for. I promise that it isn't an exaggeration that one single elite enemy will have 3 of 4 CC abilities that will make you spend more time fighting them while being frozen than you will fighting any boss in the game.

If you want to buy a 70+ dollar game to enjoy a campaign, watch some admittedly fantastic cutscenes, and occasionally go around beating up mobs in open world, this is worth the buy. If your expectations go beyond that? If you want to enjoy an actual end game where you don't have to be able to one shot every single elite before they can stun you into oblivion? If you want even somewhat meaningful rewards for a literal hour of grinding end game content? Yea, you're out of luck with this one. Keep your eyes out for a new title, and please let me know if you find one.

4/10. Campaign is solid, cutscenes are great, okay leveling experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I LOVE Diablo. I can still remember playing D2 all through college with friends, ALL NIGHT even on exam nights. Then I played D3 for years. I LOVE ARPG's - am also a huge fan of POE. I bought the 100 dollar edition and begin playing during early access. The leveling experience is pretty terrible. It is slow and clunky and there is zero power fantasy. Later on (I am now 75) it is a big quicker and there is some power fantasy but no where near ARPG levels of power fantasy. Dungeons take forever. Helltide events are unrewarding and cumbersome. Navigating with the horse is horrendous. Constantly running. Major nerfs to popular builds and the paragon tree 2 days after early release. There is no mass variety of builds. Everyone is playing the same 1-3 builds. I wanted this to be a game I could sink my teeth into and play for the next 10 years. AS it stands, I think I will likely hang it up in a few days and go back to POE and wait for POE 2. It is worth noting that level scaling DOES NOT BELONG in an ARPG.

Update: Now level 90. I can play for HOURS and not find a single upgrade or new item of any kind. ARPG's are about loot and it seems Blizzard forgot this. The loot is boring and uninspired. Very de-motivational.

Monster density is bizarre. In some dungeons, I can go through 4-6 super large rooms and encounter 1-2 mobs, period. What? This is Diablo. Where the heck are the monsters/demons?

The way it stands right now, Diablo is a polished turd. Endgame is braindead, gearing is shallow. Elite affixes are ridiculously annoying and restrictive. You're not unstoppable 24/7? Too bad, you die. Skill tree is a downgrade even compared to diablo 3, and that game isn't even an rpg.

I didn't think lowering my graphic settings would work. Was I surprised? Yes! The game **** crashed when I changed the settings. And why is the game freezing every time opening the vendor ...

Let us play this **** game offline! Insanity to force players to be at servers that just hate the players. Should we punish players if we can? Yes, if we are Blizzards! We have escape scrolls if things going really bad. And you thjink people wiould hard quit the game instead so therefor players have to be at the server 10-40 seconds after a disconnect so it is 100 percent for sure the hardcore character dies.

The problem is not the hours played and the character dies. The **** problem is that we invest a lot of gear, gold and farming to have a fun game. But you took that away from us. Hope you rotten like Elias Blizzards!

You had all the possibilities to make a great game. Listen to beta testers and so ... No, you are to proud! But we are to smart! Take your game and put it up somewhere!

Two reasons: if you are going to have an always online game, you need stable servers. I'm not just talking about the problems around launch when the servers are getting slammed. It has been a couple of weeks now and the servers are still laggy and occaisionally crash. This is making it hard to enjoy the game.

The other reason is the bizarre zoomed in feel of the game. It feels like I'm looking at it through a telescope. I keep constantly trying to scroll my mouse wheel to zoom out. Enemies attack you from off screen and the range of your own abilities is often off screen. I can't fathom why they have done this, maybe performance on consoles? However these two issues combined are seriously affecting my enjoyment of the game, which is a huge shame as there is a lot to love on the gameplay side.

Having done everything the game has to offer currently, here is my review about Diablo 4:

    Pros:
    Fluid combat system
Good enough skill trees and paragon boards: Diablo franchise was never about having super complex systems

    Cons:

    Poorly written story

    Low quality of life:
    - Stash is far from the blacksmith which is far from the jeweler which is far from the occultist... which is far from the portal. So doing stuff on the towns always takes more time than it should
    - Two different items with the same affixes will sometimes have different presentation orders of these affixes
    - Gotta press shift to enable item comparation everytime you start the game
    - Stash too small, no search function and no affinity system in it
    - No glyph search function
    - No "mark as valuable item" inventory function
    - No "sell all" NPC function
    - To teleport to a party member, you have to go to a main town, and only then you go to his portal
    - Going to a Nightmare Dungeon will take you the time of two loading screens
    - Loading screens are really slow even for big specs (at least 4s)
    - No item lootfilter - which is really bad because later on you dont wanna pick gems, normal and sacred items.

Poorly optimized game performance: too many stutterings on the world map
No originality: all the concepts in this game can be seen in other games, in D4 these are done in a worse way. For example, the Nightmare Dungeon is a merge between Diablo 3's rifts, greater rifts and bounties (yes, you are forced to do D3-bounty-like missions inside the utmost D4 endgame content)
Desync issues: currently, the only endgame boss in the game is unbearable due to desync. People have been circumventing this by doing builds that melt the boss so they don't have to deal with and try to dodge hit-kill mechanics. For more on that, look up on youtube for "Diablo 4: Uber Lilith Huge Delay with Low Ping/No Packetloss"
Unbalanced PvP: level 100 character can fight a level 50 character.

I could go on and on about every problem this game has, but then the review would get bigger than 5000 characters (max). In short, Diablo 4 is far from polished and finished. You can get more value from your 70 USD on other ARPG games the market has to offer.

Another Blizzard game where items are bound to the players account and you can not trade them. Free2Play games have a nice trade system but blizzard with billions of cash, is not able to do that aswell.

Mana regeneration is the worst I've seen in years. The spells cost by far to much mana. You use a spell like 2 times and you are out of mana AND there are enemy which can take your mana away. Wow, why devs keep putting stupid and annoying mechanics like that in their games.

People where asking to put gems and all crafting material into your 2nd pockets so you have more inventory slots and what did they do in D4? they have reduced the storage space by allot and made the items consume even more space and the redicolous part is that these gems stack only to 50. Who ever designed this trash should be fired.

How on earth are you supposed to play several classes + seasons which might come into the game in near future when there is no storage to vault your items......

How can a smaller company do all these things and a billionaire one is not able to do 10% of it?
Billions of dollars and not able to make a bigger storage / inventory system what a joke.

How long have they been working on Diablo 4 ? Everything seems to be copy and paste. You fight the same enemy all over again. The same bosses.

The quests, dungeons are totally annoying and boring. You do the same boring stuff all the time. Like kill all enemy on this and that place to be able to kill the boss. Serously, who made that stuff up? You can't even pick up the shrines, no you have to fight many of them to be able to pick them up. Many god like mechanics where the enemy is immune to everything. You have to destroy the linked parts to be able to damage that boss. Can not believe how tedious that is.

Balancing is a joke, especially the druid class. I've been playing games for so many years and this class is one of the 1st one which feels frustrating to play. No damage at all, keeps instantly dieing although I am using so many defense stuff and spells, I still die instant. My druid lvl 70 does by far less damage than a rogue lvl 50, what a joke is that? How on earth can a company be that bad in balancing stuff when they have finished several games like that before? Just don't get it. Druid is the worst class I've seen in years.

Oh and the fact that the elemental resistences are not working at all, is just a joke. Been adding resistence stuff for a long time and they do absolutely nothing at all.

Not to forget the annoying dungeon mechanics like that moving stone that follows you and keeps hitting you or that annoying flying object that can even one shot you, who came up with this stupid idea srly.

You keep stuck everywhere, no matter if you are on your horse or just running around. Your character just keeps randomly stopping.

Item drops are really bad, this is the 1st game in years where item drops are so bad that 10+ lvl higher items can be still weaker than the stuff you are wearing.

Not to forget the nonstop freezes in this game. I am getting screen freezes and stuttering all the time.

    Totally avoid this game.

Play something free2play, you'll have more of that mentioned.

Cons: Actually hard to even list it all here
    - Build diversity is a joke
    - Leveling is very dull
    - Gamplay is spam a very (very) uninteresting basic ability 3-7 times, then use spender (core ability usually) for 2 times, become resource starved, repeat. Do that for 60 levels or until you find a fully random aspect drop that allows your build to somewhat function. Didn't drop it? yeah.. too bad bud.
    - Campaign is at best average
    - After going through it you start focusing on dungeons. After doing 5-10 dungeons you realize they are actually worse than the campaign, surprisingly so. Low density, HUGE amounts of back tracking, annoying layouts and designs, very lazy asset reusing all over every single one of them.

All that is something like 10% of all problems this game has. I think it will take multiple years for this game to be fixed, if it is even possible.

At level 20+ I saw myself wishing that the next cutscene would just arrive sooner, which is odd since I usually skip them in other games.

My advice would be to keep your money, watch the cutscenes in youtube. I can promise you'll be doing yourself a favor that way.

The loot is inconsistent and aggravating, things you expect to be rewarding are not. The grind is tedious, mostly due to the fact that combat is boring and monster density is non-existent. The one bright spot beyond the single player is also a glaring failure. It’s fair and valid to have total optimism that this game will improve by leaps and bounds over the next year. However, it begs the question, why are we waiting at all when most of the stuff this game is missing are things that was added to D3 because of player suggestions. It almost seems idiotic to not include some of the quality of life additions to D3 into this game from day 1. Expand

Terrible levelling progression, convoluted talent tree. Neither as complex as Path of Exile nor as fun as Diablo 3. I wasted $80 on this game, if you’re reading this just play D3 and save your time.

Thanks to Metacritic's ridiculous forbidden bug, here's the short version: Boring garbage! Sorry for the environment artists. You did a good job.

    Diablo without Diablo.
I like the combat and hate everything else.
    No more words.

Playing this game is a total waste of time, money and energy. I spent £170 on this game, haven't played it for a month and my account got PERMA BANNED! There is no proof of violation provided and the appeal option clearly does not work. Zero warning before banning my account and there goes my money and time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all Diablo 2 is the Golden Age. Remember it forever because they aren’t going to make it like that anymore. love the ghotic setting of diablo 2 forever the perfect game

But diablo 4…i liked it but when i got accustomed to the gameplay-loop, after level 50 the game drops it facade and reveals its just a trash mobile game! , weak loot, and legendary items showering over you in the gamble section. What makes this diablo so **** is that you don’t feel the power of the items, its just that the monsters level scale with you and the only personal choice is how you assemble different legendary suffixes to complement the liquid skill tree. Thats why the game is weak.

Thats right Were in diablo 2 choices are hardlocked, in diablo 4 all is liquid: socket slots, gem insertion, weapon/armor magical suffixes AND legendary suffixes. All can be salvaged and swapped on another piece of loot. When the total property you can lood is just like a moving river, i can just walk in the rain or go fishing staring at the water instead of playing this boring videogame.

The only truth of this game is when the horadrim wolf spirit said that the horadrim will fall and that the true hearted warriors of diablo2 must jump ship. This acknowledgment is build in diablo 4 itself. The wolf acknowledged blizzard can never return to diablo 2 so there is really no point making a new game.

I think d3 had more fun builds (a lot more variety). and D2 still seems better in almost every way. Almost all "endgame" builds are pretty boring and are visually a let down. none of the classes really get me excited. I'm sad its the same type of classes they have always had. My only hope is that seasonal content is pretty substantial.

ngl, came back to blizzard for this, after all the dramas that made me close my ten plus year account with them, due to horrific stuff that came out, simply because of the base level workers, that are there, now.
Sadly, it's seems pretty clear that the talent has less had the torch passed, to it being replaced by compliant drones. The very short headline, the game has lost its soul.

it's a pretty lazy shallow attempt of a game, a story designed around a DLC or an expansion a handwave time amount away, that is both vapid commentary on religion and social issues as it is boring. Borrowing techniques and systems from like games, that use the approach, simply because they don't access to the money blizzard does. The prettiness is hear in the graphics, as always with a blizzard title, but now I can't help but start to see the stitch marks of blizzards skin suit draped over an Activision body underneath, like a ed Gein horror movie Gone are the days that we replayed a game for fun, and in truth, also no having the just pure amount of selection to choose from too, and yet we and tried to be sold a used car that won't break down after 6 months and leave you stranded, after spending nothing but everyday working on it. I certainly notice a lot of people who review the game online saying how addictive the mechanics are, even though the gameplay is sub-par, and brothers & sisters, lol you are helping to make the argument that games are a bad thing, which now that massive profit-first business has infected this hobby like a cancer, is true, because we keep supporting the wrong companies make truly great games that both have amazing stories, graphics & mechanics. Younger generations may never truly come to appreciate just how much those three things used to be a standard feature in a game, and now not a sacrificed thing on the altar of profitability, by the bloat of inept middle management that would make peter Molyneux blush. and by the rest of us continuing to reward bad business practices and behaviour, madden players I'm looking at you, those younger than us, and that doesn't matter if you're 20, 10 or even five years older than new people discovering this amazing hobby for the first time, if they see this a normal, then how will they know any different?
lets face it, we all have let this industry become what it's become, through sheer apathy and complicit indifference, if not "well I have bought MTX before, if I speak up I'm a hypocrite..." (no, no you're not under the right circumstances) and no, the answer isn't outrage or yelling and screaming from the bro-right morons either. it's simply don't buy, don't pre-order, don't MTX. your not missing out, they are, because you choose to save your cash for something better, later.
don't believe me? fine, don't. I ain't your momma, or your common sense.
but then don't complain, or complement things as a way to cope with the way things are, when the best thing you can do to protest, is simply don't get dragged into playing the marketing game if you do buy the game, enjoy the game for the money you paid, to play the game (no, FTP doesn't count, but I need to point that out for the simple minded folk). The only way we take our hobby and enjoyment back, is with our money.

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
