With devs like this you can just forget this game and come back in a couple of years when they're all gone and more competent people are in charge.

Turning what should be a fun video game into a freaking horrible mundane job. Like they can't even figure out how to get elite mobs to spawn in a dungeon. Waste of money. Blizzard is the worst imo.

The major problem I have here is their pre-season 1 patch. Someone that's calling the shots has a MAJOR obsession with creating a slow paced uninteresting slog of a game that will trap players into a monotonous long term unrewarding grind to keep player numbers high for a long as possible.

I cannot get behind the current "vision", they are out of touch with what is fun in an ARPG. Speed, damage, defence, good loot, and happiness are not allowed.

Let me be clear: This game could be an 8, but the notably good start has covered the bare truth: This game was clearly not tested enough, badly balanced, wrongly tuned when it comes to gear and skills interdependency and the cause is simple: It was released 6 months before it would have been finished!

The latest patch proves that this entire game was just a cash grab based on nostalgia. The devs are so out of touch and this patch completely proves it. I fell for the trick because of the Diablo name and I'm truly disappointed. Fool me once blizzard... never again.

Afterwards, the grind begins at level 50, *trying* to level up, applying paragon board points, advance world tier levels, and put together a fun, optimized build to carry you through the never-ending slog of nightmare dungeons. This is when the overwhelming grind sets in, and increasingly taking longer and longer to level up. I'm at level 70 now, and the progression (sheer grind) is abysmal and unenjoyable. There also many quality of life improvements needed for the inventory system and stash. You'll quickly run out of run for items, and need to go through inventory cleanup too often try to figure out what needs to be scrapped versus kept, and there's no easy way to sort through these in terms of aspects or attributes - it's a very manual process. Wishing you good luck in finding the necessary legendaries/uniques that will finally make your build work - I'm missing one that for some reason refuses to drop for me and cripples the potential of my build. This is even before the latest 1.1.0a patch which has completely nerfed most characters/skills/aspects/etc. that made the game playable and simply seems to only increase the grind. Even the Helltide which was semi-enjoyable has been completely nerfed, decreasing the aberrant cinders drop rate while increasing the cinder cost on loot crates. Only thing noticeably buffed are the enemies. Blizzard intended this to be a ten year game, but it's struggling to make it to ten weeks and it's clear the development team are out of touch with what the community needs. Whatever enjoyment there was in playing this game is gone. Expand

Before the patch I would have rated it a 7/10, good but with room for improvement. But after the patch, they have made every single aspect of the late game significantly worse, apart from nightmare dungeons. Helltide has become essentially useless, as the finder drop rate has been lowered to the point that you can only reliably farm one mystery chest per event, and often these chests have nothing but garbage in them. Besides making the game worse, none of the problems were ever addressed. Good loot drops are so rare that you hardly, if ever, change gear between levels 70-90. Mob density is low relative to other games. Only a few viable builds for late game play. Given two point though, because at least, at time of this writing, there is no pay to win/loot box options. Only thing that can be bought are skins, which is an ideal system for any game. Expand

Sadly, I paid $100 for the premium version. As soon as I realized that I would need to make a new character for season 1 (I figured since it was like a month after launch it wouldn't reset, but that's on me I guess), I decided to just wait until start of season 1. In that time, I have seen worse and worse decisions killing the potential of this game. I wish I'd never bought it and won't be picking it back up.

Devs. Do you even think about your decisions beforehand? Have you even played this game yourselves? Is there anyone at your company with oversight that said "hey, ya know, maybe this isn't such a good idea guys." Horrible company. Hope Microsoft fires everyone at Blizzard and starts over. Hopefully they hire people with even a little intelligence.

Here we go again with the same thing in Diablo 4... The leveling grind in an absolutely bonkers grind. If you are just playing casually, good luck reaching max level anytime in the next couple months. The balance of the game is an absolute joke. You have tons of ridiculous damage stipulations, damage from far away, damage when close, vulnerable damage, crowd control damage, overpower damage, lucky hits, crit chance, crit dam, pyromancy damage, flame damage, damage over time, flame damage over time etc... so building your character is incredibly challenging and if you use your brain trying to figure it out to maximize your build strength you get totally overwhelmed by all the mind numbing gear you get! Just follow some build online! Make it easy for yourself. By the way, all that gear you get which most of is NOT an upgrade will have you wearing the same stuff for 15+ levels... especially if you are one of the unfortunate souls to get stuck in WT2 and actually enjoy exploring, doing dungeons, taking your time, because if you do not rush the main quest you will eventually be so over leveled that you will stop getting any gear upgrades dropping! Next the balance updates/patch notes. If you want to ever truly understand how out of touch the devs are for this game just follow them... im not going into detail, just take a couple minutes during your lunch break and actually read what they post for balancing this game. After you do so and shake your head thinking "wtf did I just read" you will soon understand that the devs do not know wtf they are doing! Go watch youtube videos of people who do know the game like the back of their hand so they can break it down for you. Bless any of you playing sorcerer. Its a fun class... but holy is it bad! Massive mana issues, pigeonholed into using 3 to 4 (out of 5) defensive skills (flame shield, ice armor, teleport, frost nova)... low damage for anything outside of ice shards... love fire but holy cow are most of the pyro skills bad( low dps) I could go on and on... im finally about to complete the main quest and leave hell (WT2) after beating the cap stone dungeon... hopefully. Who knows. Im so over leveled (lvl 57 currently) that I have no idea how good my build really is. Guess ill find out soon hopefully. I played how I wanted to play... how i do other open world games and feels I have payed for it. There is a side note though and ill try to be positive about something(s). I have enjoyed the story/main quest line, when I have gotten around to it. Lorath and Donan are stand out characters. I have not beaten it yet so there is a chance stuff can fly off the rails, but going into act 6 I can say its one thing I have really liked. Also despite how bad it might be (its hard to tell now being so overleveled) from a meta point... i do like my firewall sorc... i like being a pyro maniac... and there lies the most painful part of this game.. things you can truly like and enjoy... bogged down by awful, out of touch devs. Take care everyone, and if you are the one person who ever actually reads this whole review, I hope you have a good day. tl;dr: A visually alluring but fundamentally flawed and a seriously lacking addition to the Diablo series. Slow gameplay, boring itemization, and ever lengthening time-sink requirements courtesy of misguided patches. Avoid wasting your money on this one.

Diablo IV, the highly anticipated addition to the iconic action RPG franchise, delivers an atmospheric and visually impressive world with all the familiar elements that fans have come to love. However, it is impossible to overlook the developers' evident disconnection from the playerbase, as they prioritize lengthening time sinks over enriching the gameplay experience. This approach results in a title that feels unnecessarily tedious and monotonous, ultimately detracting from the potential greatness of the Diablo series.

One of the most glaring issues with Diablo IV is the misguided notion that elongating the gameplay by making it take longer to complete things equates to a more challenging experience. Instead of offering intricately designed challenges and engaging encounters, the developers have resorted to inflating the game's content with time-consuming grinds, repetitive quests, and artificial difficulty spikes. This approach does not increase the game's difficulty in a meaningful way; it merely creates a sense of boredom and fatigue, distancing players from the once-thrilling Diablo universe.

Despite the visually stunning graphics and well-crafted environments, the gameplay loop often feels stagnant and uninspired. The lack of innovative mechanics or substantial improvements over its predecessors gives rise to the impression that the developers were content to rely on the series' established formula without taking the risk to evolve the gameplay to new heights. As a result, Diablo IV feels like (and truly is) a step backward, rather than the much-anticipated evolution fans had hoped for.

And it's an ARPG where the developers are slowing down an already slow game, by keeping mob density low, nerfing multiplicative damage, nerfing item drop rates, nerfing currency drop rates and nerfing overall XP.

So it's a dead world, singleplayer, slog of an RPG, right now.

All this is made worse with a terrible user interface, memory leak issues, and a development team that ran out of content at like level 70. There is nothing to do from 70 to 100.

In addition, Season 1 was supposed to introduce something innovative and they just reused a mechanic from Diablo 3. The developers are trying to artificially slow leveling so people don't ever reach 70+.

    It's a disgrace.

They would rather see the game fail (which it will if S1 first impressions are terrible), than drop the arrogance and pride and make the experience fun and memorable. It's INSANE how they ruin all their games with these selfish and short-sighted dev teams.

Diablo 4 was great but Devs destroyed their game with patch 1.1. We all spend many hours developing our characters to have the best stats. Now after the patch they nerfed every major stat for every character. Feels like I wasted the past month playing this game.

Very grindy, unfun game play loop. Low gear drop rates and vast gulfs between power points makes it feel tedious and unrewarding. Dev updates just exaggerate the bad while doing nothing to make the game feel better. Best to avoid until things change.

New game released with broken mechanic and stats, example: the most basic stat in arpg "Resistance" is broken upon game release, In live stream, dev team acknowledge resistance is FUBAR, it MIGHT get fix by season 2, because it’s complex, maybe beyond season 2.

QoL improvement, low inventory space/stash, game are zoom in too close make vision area small, Horse speed etc, paragon board reset cost, bloated gear stats, etc. just to name a few

Yes it's a new game just released, there will be areas need improvement. after 1.5 month of hearing players feedback, season 1 patch released, what did they do? they focus on NERF all class, not balance each class, they blanket nerf the class. result? those strong class became average, those weak class got even weaker to a point not enjoyable, unless you do cookie cutter builds.

How bad is the patch? remembers dev team acknowledge "Resistance" is broken, which cost player lost a layer of defense, this effect most on the sorcerer class because it's main stats INT are link to the "resistance", so the class is naturally in a defense stats disadvantages, most build had to sacrifice offense skill slot to fit in 3~4 defense skill to make builds efficient.

Guess what dev team did in Season 1 patch, they remove the armor gems replaced with "Resistance" heart (it new name for gems). LOWER THE BASE ARMOR FOR ALL CLASS. Reduce the CD reduction stats on gear (now the cd are longer).

How they address the shallow content with season 1 patch? they REDUCE the XP gain from those 3 repeat activity, so now it will take us longer to reach our goal.

Those are just few example of the disconnect from the dev team. If refund is available, I'll do it in a heart beat.

BTW, guess what dev team told the player on live stream 3 week after game release, when they were asked about content, "it's ok to stop playing". W.T.F, We paid for the game, and you tell us not to play it? so we don't complain the game's short coming, which is a direct reflection on the dev team?

Would you buy a game when dev told it's ok not to play it?

Then they dropped the new update, which doubled or tripled down on these same values to make the game an entirely longer and less fun slog. GRIFTS used to be super fun to push in Diablo 3, but whoever is the guy making these design changes at the top is an absolute know who probably is known as "a numbers guy" and knows next to nothing about making a game fun and rewarding. I have never in my entire life been so disappointed in a Diablo game, and I have played them all since the original Diablo. The only reason I gave this a 1 is because the artwork and world are beautiful. I feel bad for the artist who made such an awesome world to play in, that is entirely ruined by game design.

Level cap is 100. Loot progression is so bad post level 70 you may spend 8+ hours of play without finding a single piece of gear upgrade. Rerolling gear stats is so expensive, you're unable to effectively fish for better stats with the loot you find.

Level 80 unique more often than not drop with worse stats than the level 60 version of the same unique you've been wearing for 20 levels. Its rare you get a better version than what you're using.

Rather than create endgame activities the devs have slowed XP gain and have also ratcheted back defensive and offensive stats on gear in an attempt to make the slow grind even slower with no payoff at later levels.

I have no idea how a huge game studio, with 20+ years making games in this genre, with so much public beta feedback, can ignore the player base and screw up this bad.

Worst class balance in the history of the franchise

    Major cons

Seasons, forcing you to rerolling your characters from level 1 with just cosmetic items baited on a paid carrot
    Horrendous patches, game breaking patches

After giving Blizzard the benefit of doubt, they continue with horrendous game destroying patches and seem to have nothing but contempt for the playerbase.

As a veteran of the entire series, I hate to say it but Diablo IV is a step backwards and not forwards and is entirely due to the live service model, this is more akin to a psudeo MMO than the single player/solo experience of the previous iterations and I don't know how to feel about that especially as future content unlocks that could require a full group, so the game moves more in a direction of a true MMo rather than the classic experience.

Graphics are a step up from Diablo 3, but after 10+ years you would expect so. I have no complaints here, everything looks more dark gothic in nature with dreary backgrounds and destroyed ruins to explore that adds to the atmosphere, whilst the sound and music is passable it isn't nearly on par with Diablo 2.

Gameplay is a mixed bag, its highly repetitive and honestly? Its Diablo! That part was to be expected, but this time the repetitiveness comes in forms of repeating the same dungeons, the same events and fighting the same monsters over and over, it definitely feels like less monster variations than previous games.

Itemization is terrible, far worse than any other previous diablo game. Its basically like the borderlands series with 3+ million items and only a bunch of them are any good, 9 out of 10 times you'll be scrapping/selling items over and over again, very rarely will you find anything useful which creates tedium, coupled with poor skill sets and heavily nerfed builds so that players are mostly forced into meta builds right from the start and never deviate from those paths.

Gems are a wasted opportunity as well serving barely any point outside of Topaz for a base attack buff, everything else is lacking significantly. Another issue is levelling exploits that are not being patched and being actively abused by many people to hit the level cap in hours, because blizzard would rather not ban any youtube influencers or streamers who are the main abusers.

Server stability is terrible, on a good day you'll face a lot of rubberbanding or severe frame rate drops for no real reason, login servers are constantly overloaded and/or crash often for hours at a time aka something that has always happened.

Class balance is an absolute joke, it always has been in the series but Diablo 4 takes that imbalance and goes way beyond anything that should be acceptable, the main culprit here is the excessive nerfs that happened after beta because a few people found builds and in the early game they were powerful, repeat here "early game" because the beta only had access to the first act and up to level 25, because of this several classes especially the sorcerer are nearly unviable in endgame dungeons not to mention absolutely require BIS gear to be even functional especially after T30+ nightmare dungeons, whilst other classes can just breeze through, this issue has been made worse by all the exploiters complaining about content because they abused their way to level 100 in 1/10th of the time.

PvP is similar to the division style of risk vs reward, and we all know how that turned out right? The PvP in D4 is worse, mostly griefers camping the PvE parts of the fields of hatred or the statues of Lilith knowing that people will try to unlock the full zone completion, and did I mention that PvP right now is also once again, entirely unbalanced with rogues entirely having the ability to perm stunlock players?

To summarize, Diablo 4 is a big disappointment for the franchise. Has far too many issues to overcome and we all know, the fixes will be excuses for new 'seasons' forcing players who have spent hundreds of hours on their characters to basically start over. The game is entirely tedious once you have finished the main story since you can basically go straight to WT3 and get a carry to WT4 and then its just mindless grind, find a few item upgrades and rinse and repeat and if you didn't take advantage of any of the levelling exploits, then reaching 100 will take you a long time but in the long run, it'll be a meaningless achievement.

I can't play this game at all. The colors are not passing any accessibility guidelines and my eyes are burning after 30 minutes. No map overlay also adds huge eye strain on my wide monitor. I can't even finish campaign because of it.

Beta version of the game for 70$. Itemization is total garbage, most of the stats are useless. Unique items are trash, you just sell most of the uniques you find. Class balance is terrible.

They killed the game. There is no endgame in this game. Past lvl 50 is nothing but repetitive chores.

Incompetent team delivering incomplete game and taking the worst decisions ever when they make mistakes that completely change the balance of game for everyone and instead to make a fair e smart decision they prefer to leave the biggest bonus in game ever to some players and don't give to other players the same chance they wrongly gave to the lucky one that were online when they "patched"Incompetent team delivering incomplete game and taking the worst decisions ever when they make mistakes that completely change the balance of game for everyone and instead to make a fair e smart decision they prefer to leave the biggest bonus in game ever to some players and don't give to other players the same chance they wrongly gave to the lucky one that were online when they "patched" to add stuffs. Very very mid. Has potential if they scrap some of its core systems, like itemization (having to find the items with legendary aspects / uniques again and again, just with higher levels. And streamline some of the mods that actually don't make sense) and level scaling (which probably won't happen.)

Story was meh, character builds are meh, not a lot of choice. Really bad endgame loop.

Plays great most of the time and is visually impressive.

See other negative reviews, everything has been said already. I really like Diablo as a series, but I cannot fathom these 10/10 reviews. (Everything below 3/4 also. It's a decent game, but with so many flaws... But good potential.)

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
