Despite advancements in gaming technology, the game clings to dated gameplay mechanics that offer little innovation. The predictable hack-and-slash combat, while once a hallmark, now feels repetitive and unexciting. The narrative, touted as a focal point, fails to engage players with its generic storyline and underdeveloped characters.

One of the game's major pitfalls is its lack of variety. The uninspired environments and limited enemy types make each playthrough feel eerily similar, leaving players craving diversity and surprise. Additionally, the long development cycle has led to raised expectations, yet the game falls short of delivering on its promises. The absence of revolutionary features that could have reinvigorated the series makes Diablo 4 a missed opportunity. Ultimately, the game's failure to break free from its own conventions renders it an underwhelming and tedious experience, leaving both fans and newcomers yearning for more.

Even then the zoom level is too close, making navigation difficult at times. It would be nice if you could zoom out a little further, but I guess that would take away from seeing the details on your $25 armor/skin.

I finished the story and that was more than enough for me, even that was a grind. I have no desire to continue playing this game. I don't see the point, as I can't trade with other players, the NPC's have nothing real to say. There is no real excitement in grinding dungeons for drops when 99% of drops are only slight upgrades of the gear you already have. The world just seems so empty and pointless. The world feels more like a medieval dystopian socialist Russia, than a world facing an apocalypse.

Oh, if that wasn't enough every once and awhile Blizzard comes along and redesigns how your character plays with no warning, ruining the viability of your build. Great strategy on how to keep players invested. There is a good game in here somewhere... it just seems Blizzard does everything in it's power to make it not available.

There is little to do and what is available feels so needlessly repetitive and I'm all about a grinder but this grind just isn't fun. Final straw for me is when I see instead of planning a meaningful expansion they're just intending to release yearly expansions. There are still so many mechanics broken in the base game! The state of how the game was released and how poorly they're getting things fixed up I have no faith the yearly expansions will bring any real improvement, and most likely will turn it into a bigger more difficult to re-enter mess. I was ready to spend extra money on the game down the road too even if it was cosmetic if they showed they could get the game in order. However, Blizzard has made it clear this is purely about money and not about providing the type of gaming experience that earned them the status in the industry they once had. They got my money for nostalgia's sake this time but won't get another cent out of me unless they can return to what got them this far, but I'm not hopeful I went ahead and uninstalled the game today as I realized I haven't played in weeks now and the game was just taking up space on my drive. It would be much better if they dropped rare and unique items very rarely, but if they had value, something to attract interest and attention, rather than pointlessly filling the inventory with items that I then waste time looking through their pointless statistics and then sell them. The chest is extremely small for all the crap that needs to be collected. An awful lot of damage affixes that don't make any sense. All these dozens of affixes can be optimized down to just a few. I feel like this is all done on purpose to waste your in-game time looking at item stats instead of playing a real game. Boring, boring, boring! The game is full of bugs... I'm very disappointed. I had decided not to pay blizzard anymore for games but decided to give diablo 4 a chance. It had heavy hype and really fooled us all into thinking it was going to be a good game. And to be honest, I believed that maybe blizzard would have learned from the not great success of diablo 3 and would listen to people... but NO. Sorry blizzard, you took money from me for the last time. The only meaningful thing you've done in all these years since you weren't a real blizzard was to make a d2r. And at least consider fixing the stupid bugs and memory leaks before bragging that you already have season 2 content. So stupid of you! I give this game 0 points! A far cry from a real Diablo. Itemization is confusing, and it feels as though you are always making a trade-off when equipping a new item. There are very few times where you will equip an item and it will be a net positive improvement. A lot of items also offer boosts to specific skills, meaning you'll need to pay to respec your character to invest in a certain skill to maximize your damage. Charging the player to do this seems diabolical.

There aren't that many memorable bosses, the open world is flat out boring and empty feeling, and the multiplayer system doesn't make sense. There is no way to matchmake and join groups, and there is also no offline single player mode.

Diablo has always been a source of relaxation and stress relief. Kill some monsters in extravagant ways, roll the dice on finding cool gear that opens up new gameplay options, feel stronger over time, and generally turn your brain off for a bit. Sure, you could try and push harder difficulties and challenge yourself more, but you didn't have to and it was still enjoyable.

This new Diablo wants to be harder, but not in fun ways. Waiting for cooldowns feels bad. Waiting for your mana to recharge because mana flasks were removed feels bad. Being limited to six skill slots feels bad. Dying at the end of a Helltide so you just wasted your time and can't make up for it right away feels bad. Running into barriers on your horse feels bad. Not being able to respec easily feels bad. Getting to the end of a boss battle and running out of flasks feel bad. Being squishy feels bad (I played sorcerer, big mistake). Not being able to see the map while playing feels bad. And there being no interesting loot to make the rest of this bearable feels worst of all.

I played the campaign and quit soon after that - it just doesn't seem like whatever design philosophy created this aligns with what I want from a Diablo game. Maybe if it's your first Diablo game you won't come in with these same expectations, but I had more frustration than fun with it.

However, the latest patch has left fans disappointed and frustrated, as it marks a major downturn for the once-beloved franchise. From fundamental gameplay changes to a lack of content updates, the new patch has managed to tarnish what was once a shining gem in the gaming industry.

One of the most significant issues with the new patch is the complete overhaul of gameplay mechanics. Fans have invested countless hours mastering the game's mechanics, but with the patch, all that hard work seems to be for naught. Core abilities have been reworked, leading to imbalances that upset the game's overall balance. This has resulted in many players feeling disoriented and disconnected from the game they once loved.

Additionally, the introduction of a new progression system has left many long-time players feeling lost and unsatisfied. The patch abandoned the previous system that players had grown accustomed to, replacing it with a convoluted and confusing approach that lacks clarity and direction. As a result, players now find themselves struggling to adapt to the changes and wondering if it's even worth the effort to continue playing.

Another major letdown is the lack of fresh content. Despite promises of exciting updates and improvements, the new patch seems to offer nothing substantial in terms of new quests, items, or regions to explore. Players were hoping for new challenges and a revitalized gaming experience, but instead, they were greeted with a patch that feels like a step backward rather than a leap forward.

Moreover, the handling of bugs and glitches in this new update has been subpar at best. Players have reported numerous issues, ranging from minor annoyances to game-breaking bugs that completely ruin the experience. The lack of a timely response from the developers has only added fuel to the fire, leaving many players feeling neglected and ignored.

Furthermore, the new patch appears to be a desperate attempt to cater to the casual audience, sacrificing the depth and complexity that once defined the series. Diablo 4 used to be known for its challenging gameplay and rewarding character progression, but the changes brought about by the patch seem to undermine those core elements, alienating its most dedicated fans.

In conclusion, Diablo 4's new patch has been a colossal disappointment. It fails to deliver on the promises made by the developers and betrays the legacy of the franchise. The drastic changes to gameplay mechanics, lack of fresh content, mishandling of bugs, and the apparent abandonment of its dedicated fanbase have all contributed to this unfortunate downfall. Unless the developers take significant steps to address these issues, it's difficult to see how Diablo 4 can recover from this setback and regain the trust of its once-loyal community.

So this is the point of view from a casual player looking to play single player. None of the complaints about balancing, nerfs or the endgame complaints from someone looking to sink 500+ hours in a game.

I approached this game expecting an uninspired but solid game that I could complete the campaign and move on. I have a backlog of games to play and I don't need to play something
So this is the point of view from a casual player looking to play single player. None of the complaints about balancing, nerfs or the endgame complaints from someone looking to sink 500+ hours in a game.

I approached this game expecting an uninspired but solid game that I could complete the campaign and move on. I have a backlog of games to play and I don't need to play something forever. Sadly despite my bar being set really low I was disappointed.

-Gameplay feels lacking with very few builds or diversity.

-For gear yellow rare items can be as good as legendary which is bad in that legendary items can and often do roll lower than yellows. You can transfer traits but that requires large amount of resources and you can only transfer once. for something you will replace in a couple levels it sucks. Many of the skills are super specific to just one build making most legendary items completely useless.

-Rubberbanding/sliding constantly. Sometimes during lag spikes which I believe are mostly server based. Not a new issue since diablo 3 also had online always but still sucks.

-collision with my own units making movement awkward(played necromancer) would sometimes need to move around to get minions to randomly move out of the way of object i wanted to interact with

-open world is fine if it adds to the immersion or exploration but it felt more like the open space was an obstacle to getting into more fights. ignoring 3-5 mobs not worth dismounting became the norm and I just ran from quest to quest with my horse when it was unlocked.

-The story was kind of so-so but it didn't really complete and left it super open ended to try to draw you back for more. If it is only added to seasonal I likely will not pick up the game again since leveling is a chore and the main campaign was long but not super enjoyable.

The overall end result is a game I wanted to play just to complete and didn't really enjoy. I ended up completing it only because I had the mentality of "I paid for this so I may as well finish". I was extremely tempted to drop difficulty part way through campaign not because it was hard but because I wanted to be done sooner. By the time I unlocked Torment and completed campaign I was done with diablo 4 and did not want to touch endgame or try getting unique gear. I regret my purchase and do not recommend unless you want to burn time and money and have nothing better to do.

There's exploits and cheesey strategies that have been discovered by a few and shared online with others. If and after you do spend all this time grinding - far more than what's reasonable, especially if you want to try other classes...you're rewarded with a fun end game loop? Nope. More grinding for gear that has perfect rolls and the right combo of affixes. This isn't unlike any other game like this, but it's much slower.

Unique items in the game? Nope. They're pointless and don't drop often or you get the really useless ones a bunch of times.

Re-rolling gear affixes? You may find out you get offered the same one but with a lower roll. Or you may get to choose from the same affix twice (wasted enchant).

It's just an epic waste of time really. For no reward. You get nothing for all the time invested. They didn't finish their end game content. You can stop playing after level 80 or so.

Such a wasted opportunity. They had momentum too. They threw it all away. Well, maybe they can fix it. Check back in a few months or a year.

Here we go again with the same thing in Diablo 4... The leveling grind in an absolutely bonkers grind. If you are just playing casually, good luck reaching max level anytime in the next couple months. The balance of the game is an absolute joke. You have tons of ridiculous damage stipulations, damage from far away, damage when close, vulnerable damage, crowd control damage, overpower damage, lucky hits, crit chance, crit dam, pyromancy damage, flame damage, damage over time, flame damage over time etc... so building your character is incredibly challenging and if you use your brain trying to figure it out to maximize your build strength you get totally overwhelmed by all the mind numbing gear you get! Just follow some build online! Make it easy for yourself. By the way, all that gear you get which most of is NOT an upgrade will have you wearing the same stuff for 15+ levels... especially if you are one of the unfortunate souls to get stuck in WT2 and actually enjoy exploring, doing dungeons, taking your time, because if you do not rush the main quest you will eventually be so over leveled that you will stop getting any gear upgrades dropping! Next the balance updates/patch notes. If you want to ever truly understand how out of touch the devs are for this game just follow them... im not going into detail, just take a couple minutes during your lunch break and actually read what they post for balancing this game. After you do so and shake your head thinking "wtf did I just read" you will soon understand that the devs do not know wtf they are doing! Go watch youtube videos of people who do know the game like the back of their hand so they can break it down for you. Bless any of you playing sorcerer. Its a fun class... but holy is it bad! Massive mana issues, pigeonholed into using 3 to 4 (out of 5) defensive skills (flame shield, ice armor, teleport, frost nova)... low damage for anything outside of ice shards... love fire but holy cow are most of the pyro skills bad( low dps) I could go on and on... im finally about to complete the main quest and leave hell (WT2) after beating the cap stone dungeon... hopefully. Who knows. Im so over leveled (lvl 57 currently) that I have no idea how good my build really is. Guess ill find out soon hopefully. I played how I wanted to play... how i do other open world games and feels I have payed for it. There is a side note though and ill try to be positive about something(s). I have enjoyed the story/main quest line, when I have gotten around to it. Lorath and Donan are stand out characters. I have not beaten it yet so there is a chance stuff can fly off the rails, but going into act 6 I can say its one thing I have really liked. Also despite how bad it might be (its hard to tell now being so overleveled) from a meta point... i do like my firewall sorc... i like being a pyro maniac... and there lies the most painful part of this game.. things you can truly like and enjoy... bogged down by awful, out of touch devs. Take care everyone, and if you are the one person who ever actually reads this whole review, I hope you have a good day. I waited until the first season patch to write a review, hoping they would listen to the community and make improvements, perhaps even adding features to make the game more fun. Sadly, the exact opposite has occurred. They have slowed down experience, made characters far easier to kill, taken any fun abilities and made them less effective while not buffing or even fixing skills that are broken or useless. But after the latest patch for Season 1, where they basically nerfed everything and made everything longer, harder, slower, and less fun across the board then I'm giving the game the rating it deserves. Devs need to take a long hard look at the game, give us actually good loot (sets should have been a part of season 1), fix endgame, fix mob density, and stop nerfing all the fun out of the game. After the patch Blizzard reduced the fun by 95%. Devs are out of touch. Last game I bought from Blizzard.

Community completely ignored, QOL and bugs ignored at the expense of nerfing the viable builds and actual fun content within the game. A complete waste of time with total mismanagement from the developers.

It's not just that Diablo IV is a downgrade from Diablo III in almost every way despite the newer technology used. It's that Blizzard is sucking the soul from it's story lines by rehashing the same **** over and over and over and over and over and overtly over again.

The Game played better during the Beta, was more balanced.. It was a better game before they released it. Nothing in this

It's like these companies don't even try anymore. Just cut and paste the same bs. I've spent more hours than I like to admit on this game not because I like it but because I'm trying to get my **** hundred dollars worth of value. It's not happening.

I tried so hard to like this game but after 252 hours I want to be sincere to myself and admit it. Minimum 3 hard crashes during a 4-5 hour playsession, often server lag, bugs, bad mechanics, itemization, risk/reward and overall fun. Fun to frustration ratio I will rate it 2 out of 10 in this state.

Had a gigantic review in plans, but it's not worth my time, all i can say is that the game is boring and Blizzard just doesn't care making it good.

Game launched with broken core mechanics (resistances not working, hurting two int-oriented classes). For their first major patch, they reduce all fun elements and make the game even more grindy than before.
You cannot need all the good elements of the game without offering a good alternative. With the current patch, everyone will be playing the same builds but will be less powerful and

The game was already so-so but now it is dead until devs figure out how to make it fun again.

Annoying game, they had gold in their hands and once again, blizzard ruined everything. Well done guys, mistaking your players for moneybags doesn't work anymore. Never again will I buy a blizzard game

I don't want to make it longer, 3.0 review tells it all. It is like Cleopatra on netflix, at least it is going this way.

This game is a perfect example of how to kill all of Your player base in a matter of a couple of days...even BEFORE releasing the season 1 content...

I literally cannot believe myself that I have paid 60gbp for this absolute pile of garbage

After 1.1 patch, I really think if it's worth to even play Season 1.
Maybe if they undo some changes, I will consider it.
I lost my faith in Blizzard being able to bring up good changes.
They're Devs simply don't play the game.. there's no other explanation for such horseshait changes.

The most tone deaf Dev team ever. The game had a chance at being great, it has lost it's allure for me after the flagrant disregard for basic QoL updates in lieu of completely dismantling the game.

So, they have absolutely nuked any and all fun in the Eternal realm…. They are hiding power behind the seasonal event… why? Simple, they are forcing players to play seasons where they can jam the paid battle pass down your throat every time you level.

Greedy scumbags, all around. Terrible, greed-fuelled decisions made by blizzard/activision have ruined the game and utterly deleted all

The reason it gets a 2 rather than a 0/1 is because it is a game, there's no denying that. It just really sucks.

I didn't play much of D3, only the last couple of seasons, but I actually started launching it instead of D4 a week into the release. That's how bad it felt to play D4. They're trying so hard to save the sinking ship as well, which is pretty sad to watch. Whoever thought that

Whoever thought that repeating NM dungeons from level 45 to 100 was a good idea (what is that like ~70-100 hours of gameplay?) was foreseeably wrong.

If it took 30 hours to level a character from 0 to 100, then I would play. But as long as they continue to burn players time so that they can point to a graph of playtime and feel good about themselves I will not be reinstalling.

This game felt great when I first got it and was leveling through it with friends. I was never a huge Diablo player, but had played diablo 3 quite a bit and had recently started a Diablo 2 playthrough. The combat in the ACTION RPG is very very slow and once you finally get through the main story and get max level. There is absolutely nothing to do. I love the look and feel of the game, but after finishing the story the world seems empty. Grinding helltides and dungeons over and over gets dull very quickly. I liked that the beginning felt difficult and managing resources and potions felt important. Towards the end game, you pretty much one shot everything and it's annoying to wait for skills to come off cool down.

The balance feels very off to the point that everyone is running one or two builds per class. And for most classes can only deal damage with core skills, meaning there are only 4 possible skills to build your character around. All other skills are just there for unstoppable or support. Between having to use 1/4 skills to deal damage and the powers on items being either insanely overpowered or useless, your character does not feel unique or customizable. I think the paragon board starts to bring out uniqueness, but it doesn't offer enough power to make a build feasible. It's mostly just there to empower one of the two builds you can choose from. Not to mention how slow it feels to traverse the board, and it's the last thing you get to and it takes a good amount of grinding to finish. This almost feels like it should be the early access, and they need to listen to the community and make some major changes. I'd really like to be able to build a character around any skill, not just the core skills, and still have it be viable. Monsters and bosses aren't challenging and have few mechanics. Starting a new character, there is no content from levels 1-50, and after you only have dungeons and helltides. It's not challenging or fun enough to make me want to continue playing the game. This game feels like it could have potential, but with frequent bugs, crashes, and not much to do it doesn't feel like a finished game.

    Pros
Very cool cosmetics and a beautiful world
    Feels good to play
No pay to win/ pay for power

    Cons
Unbalanced in that some builds are not viable while others are broken with very little overlap
Progression feels very slow, I like having the power tied to the character - but powering up a new character is so time consuming and boring I'm not really trying other classes
Monsters and bosses do not have mechanics that make them fun to fight
Crowd control is basically the only thing you need to be afraid of, and you can get around it with unstoppable
Content feels very lacking and repetitive

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
