    * Lack of social support - poorly implemented chat channels, automatched game joining only, ghost town effect, 4 player limit = even less socializing.

    * Cheesy B-movie story-telling, cliche one-dimensional characters, corny voice-acting, non-sensical/comical actions by villains, predictable twists and plotline.

    * Lack of diverse character types within and among classes - no more physical/caster/hybrid - all character types now rely on weapon damage like physical characters in D2. This destroys a huge amount of itemization/gearing choices, as there's no longer a deviation between decentralized gear (caster) vs centralized gear (physical) vs a build that needs to balance the two (hybrid).

    * DRM online only - no offline single player, no lan support. Laggy servers, and all the same issues of botting, duping, spamming, and trade exploits present in a game that's over a decade old. * Crappy UI that's designed by a console developer - convoluted to navigate, clunky, and inefficient at utilizing screen space.

    * Approx FOUR times less legendaries (uniques/runewords) in the game than D2:
    * 9 chest pieces vs 37 uniques + 14 runewords
    * 18 swords vs 35 uniques + 26 runewords
    * 6 shields vs 22 uniques + 8 runewords
    * 7 bows vs 19 uniques + 16 runewords

    * 4 gems vs 7 gems + 8 unique jewels + 33 runes + a NEAR LIMITLESS variety of magic/rare jewels.

    * Legendaries are generic, boring, and don't have the flavor that D2 uniques/runewords did. Randomization of 1-3 entire affixes also makes the item much less iconic or powerful than before.

    * A severe lack of combat mechanic affixes compared to D2.

    * Inferno mode is broken. It's not more difficult, it's just cheap. 1/2-shots everywhere, melee is severely handicapped. A number of retarded monster affixes that should never have been put in. Most builds except for a select few aren't even viable. There's no semblance of strategy, just having the best gear possible and dumb luck in not hitting the wrong champions.

    * Quests feel a lot more forced and non-optional than in D2.

    * RMAH diminishes the sense of achievement of finding items. Spending hours finding a great item just doesn't feel as rewarding when you know you can find something similar at the RMAH for a couple of cents. Although buying items with money was prevalent in D2, at least it was hidden away and not endorsed for all players to see and use.

    * Farming has shifted from item finding to gold finding. However, gold finding is considerably less fun than item finding. D2 was like playing the slot machine, each pull of the lever and you had a chance at something amazing. D3 is like going to work everyday, earning a paycheck, then buying what you want with the money.

    * Outdoors feel a lot more linear, which is amplified by their completely static nature - there's less vast open areas with less monsters at a time compared to D2 = less opportunities to kill hoards of enemies at once.

    * No ethereal or superior items, no ability to create items with such properties or transmute it onto items you own, no gambling, no charms, no way to reroll item affixes. Mystic used to be able to do this, then got scrapped. All this just represents more dumbing down of features.

    * Lack of character uniqueness/identity/ownership - all builds are freely changeable, many builds in the late game are similar or identical - no character permanence + lack of customizability = lack of character attachment.

    * Lack of in-depth customization - skills only have 1 level each so it's impossible to specialize in certain skills to the extent you could before. You can't specialize in builds that aren't predetermined for you through the passive trait system. Because there are no points to allocate, there's no more tinkering with unique builds, thinking about your build, or calculating your allocation of skill points/synergies.

    * Low replayability - no point in making more than 1 character for each class. All unique builds can be tried out in the timespan of a few minutes, instead of a few weeks. Unique builds aren't practical in Inferno. Not enough depth in customization. Not enough depth in itemization. Bad pvp = low incentive to find loot. Bland loot = low incentive to find loot. Gold farming = low incentive to find loot. Low social support = less fun while playing. After beating inferno, is there even a point in continuing to play a game that's no longer fun?

The first being Blizzard's lack of preparation for the flooding of the servers. What I don't understand is if Blizzard can afford to run WoW, one of the world's most popular online games, day in and day out with no server compromises, then how can it not handle Diablo 3 when they've had 12 years to prepare for its imminent release? This brings me to my next point, the need to be constantly online even to play single player. Why should I have to be online to play single player, a mode that utilizes no online components whatsoever? This is further complicated by Blizzard's ineptitude to anticipate the flooding of the servers. This means that the consumer has been unable to play a mode that should not utilize online servers due to Blizzard's huge blunder. Like I said before, if this game were only $30, then it wouldn't be as bad. The fact that Blizzard gave us an unprepared piece of garbage for $60 is what makes this game terrible. Expand

This would be such a great game, if it was playable. This has to be the most horrible launch in the history of PC gaming. Blizzard should be ashamed of themselves. Working on this game for 10 years, with the experience of running the most successful mmo in history, and they can't even handle a co-op game. Shame on you, blizzard. Shame on you.

We actually managed to sidestep the login issues, so this review will not be taking blizzard's disastrous handling of drm and their servers into account. That's not to say there's nothing I don't like about the service. The friend system blizzard set up for battlenet is flat out stupid. Why do you need a special code to add a friend? Seriously why? Considering how important it is for adding friends, why isn't it on clear display on your in game profile? I didn't pick the numbers, they were randomly assigned to me, so I had to open up a browser, go to my battlenet account and look it up. It is frankly a pointless hassle. We're friends in starcraft 2 anyway, why doesn't that carry over? Blizzard's digital distribution system is just flat out crappy. But on to the actual game. Well it's not very pretty to be quite frank. It's got good art direction, but it's not an mmo, no need to have the game render 500 people at once. Why aren't there better graphics settings? The game certainly knows that it's not an mmo, because mmo's have character customization. Diablo 1 and 2 had preset non customizable characters because they used rotoscopings of 3d models well in advance of what the game and pcs back then could render in real time. Diablo 3 has mmo quality graphics, so why can't we at least have a little customization? An immediate comparison for me here is vindictus, an instanced mmo beat em up game where classes are pre set characters. That game is about 3 years old now, looks better, and has pretty robust character customization anyway.
The next biggest issue with character customization is that you can't assign stat points. So the only difference between characters is their equipment and what skills they have equipped. All skills are automatically unlocked at set levels, so everyone has the same skills to pick from. The rationale behind this being that people would just find whatever was the most efficient build and everyone would do that, but I don't see how removing everything changes that. People will still do the exact same thing, it'll just be a lot easier for everyone to switch. Frankly it takes all the diversity out of things. You'll never see people coming up with any wacky builds or trying new things because there's nothing new to try.
So items are basically the ONLY way to distinguish characters. Well then they must have put a lot of work into making lots of really diverse items right? Nope. You can dye items. That's about it. You'll get a million of the exact same looking hat with randomized stats. They haven't improved it an iota since diablo 2.
So on to the story. Is the story interesting? No. No it isn't. It's generic as hell. Blizzard has lost all the writing panache and daring they had in the starcraft/diablo 2/warcraft 3 days. Just imagine the most simplistic straightforward story about fighting demons and you'll basically have diablo 3's story. The characters are all featureless talking heads that talk like their in a dining car murder mystery and I feel like I'm in one too. The gameplay. It's exactly the same as diablo 2. I guess. You click on monsters, they die, you pick up gold and items they drop. 99% of items will be worthless trash you sell as soon as you go back to town, the other 1% will be an incremental stat upgrade. The boss fights are about as use all your abilities when they are off cooldown until it dies. Only less so. There's no dodging or strategy, and the bosses aren't particularly challenging, they just have big health bars. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack. Blizzard may have fallen a long way in every other regard, but their composers are still top notch. The music is far more thrilling than the actual game.
My bottom line advice is don't buy it. If you didn't like diablo 1 or 2, there's nothing about diablo 3 that will change your mind. If you loved diablo 1 and 2, you're more likely to be disappointed by what they gutted from those games than the graphics facelift circa 2008. If you're a lore buff and you want to find out what happened after diablo 2, I don't think you'll like what they've done. It's not as bad as what starcraft 2 did to starcraft's story, but it's certainly not a worthwhile investment. If you're just too diehard a fan to not get it then wait. Seriously, just wait. A price drop will make the game a lot easier to swallow. $60 is ridiculous for what we're getting. Also, the inevitable drm crack to make the singleplayer component of the game playable when blizzards servers down or you just can't be online (a plane, a road trip, just away from a connection, there's plenty of times when you can't be online and you should still be able to play the game you payed for).

Its Now been several years and many developers have made similar games, I had hoped with the long wait Blizzard had made some new additions to this iconic title or at the least made more modern updates to the old formula to continue its legacy. Sadly Diablo 3 did not deliver, lets set aside the launch day problems, if that were the only issue here I could forgive not being able to play much on opening day. The game play is solid but nothing new or groundbreaking but this game has a lack of customization that I find disturbing most good new RPG games Provide tools to customize the appearance of your character. It is important to many players In a Roll Playing Game to be able to make the character as they see it, to take ownership and grow him in to what they like, playing with other cloned players devalues the experience and makes it difficult to be a proud owner of your character. Worse then not being able to change your appearance is making every person playing the same class a clone, the skill tree idea has been such a great way to give players choices on how to make characters as they see fit and taking this away makes me feel like I am playing your character not mine. So now that we are all playing identical twins the trade off should be amazing graphics right? Well the graphics are not bad but they are not good either looking more like something that should have been released a few years ago and the sound is good but the voice acting leaves something to be desired (competing with Bioware in voice acting will make it tough for them to rate well in this). I have not had time to beat the game yet (I work long hours the rest of the week and it has been unplayable most of the opening day so I will have to wait till the weekend to play again I hope the bugs will be worked out by then) but I have been told that it is not very long. I hope this is not true and that Blizzard is not counting on PVP and repetition to keep us playing, and I really hope they are not counting on releasing several more expansions at $60 each containing content that should have been released with the original game. At this point the game would be rated at a 5 of 10 but there decision to take out offline play entirely making it so we are not really purchasing the game but more like renting it from them for as long as there servers are supporting it. Not to mention the inability to play a single player game because they are doing server work or my internet is down. People will support the policy because of all the cheating that went on in the other Diablo titles but removing offline play will not stop this and any one thinking that hackers will not find a way to hack and cheaters will not find a way to cheat this system are just kidding them selves. look at WOW its online only and that has not prevented several speed hacking and item duping hacks from being used over the years.
To sum things up this game is a major step back from previous titles and I hope Blizzard realizes this and makes corrections bringing this game up to modern standards. My message to Blizzard, I own all the titles you have released on pc and they are good games but it seems that you have not been playing other games on the market recently so let me tell you what an RPG player expects in the year 2012 from a premium priced title, customization is key changing the looks and skills of your character makes it seem like you have hundreds of options instead of just the basic Classes, a long and involving story make me feel like I got my moneys worth out of paying your premium price , Graphics do not make the game and blizzard has never been known for cutting edge graphics so I can forgive the graphics if the game is reliable but making it rely on your servers and an internet connection takes away reliability leaving me withe a game that can be surpassed by smaller developers for a fraction of the cost (for the price of this game I could have purchased 8 copies of torchlight and torchlight 2 from steam and given it to many of my friends) . Overall I cant give this game better then a 3 as it is now i would love for Blizzard to listen to its fans and fix many of the things the fans are asking for but I don't hold much hope for that as it seems recently they see me as more of a wallet then a fan of there games.

Diablo gameplay is characterized by fast paced clicking and split second decision making. When you are trying to thread the needle through a pack of monsters and you are lagging or even start rubber-banding because of the forced online connection at all times, even for the single player game... it leads to a poor experience.

While the previous Diablo games had online multiplayer, these were optional experiences that were available in addition to the core single player offline experience. Performance degradation because of the nature of online play is acceptable in exchange for enhanced functionality that is actually being used. Especially when the degradation is only experienced after completing the full offline experience. It is similar to how your friend talking during a movie that you are watching on your TV doesn't really ruin the experience if you've already seen the movie in a quiet movie theater.

What Blizzard has done is to have filmed a movie and then REQUIRED you to watch it with your loud obnoxious friend talking and throwing popcorn during the entire thing. It doesn't matter what is on the screen, because it is ruined by the environment in which you are forced to experience it in.

There is no need to recreate characters, no decisions you make in the game are committments, and I don't see where any level of replayability will come from.

Pretty game, great name, fundamental game flaws. 3/10

Well, Blizzard should first fix its servers before selling the game. Apparently, they learnt nothing from the stress test. On a side note, always on DRM and auction house with real money, conveys a lot about Blizzard's greed.

This game is just another proof of how greedy Blizzard became. Diablo 3 just beat the 60 bucks plank and breached to a new level - 77$ in my region. And what do we get for that price? 1) Poor story. Re-usage of everything that was in Diablo 2, and nothing new. 2) Internet connection needed to play in single player. 3) No LAN. Nuff said.
    4) All characters look awful. Male Demon Hunter and Mage look like some emo, but definitely not like a world savers. 5) In-game action house is just a way to ruin balance for players. And for Blizzard, it's another way to milk us.
    6) The game is too short. Some Korean beat it in 12 hours and 29 minutes. Wut? Wondering what took Blizzard so long to make that game...
    7) And finally, as 95% of new games on the market, it became casual. Yep, a game for those who don't give a crap about character customization, challenge, and plot. As everyone already said: no skill points to spend, everything upgrades itself just like in World of Warcraft, all abilities unlocking automatically, et cetera. It's not Action-RPG anymore. The RPG part is merely an illusion. The rating you see here, totally explains the quality of this game. And for all those fan-boys out there who gives Diablo 3 more than 6 score: after the "new shiny thing wow effect" fades away, take a closer look, and see for yourself, how awful the game market looks like now.

The lore, the art style, the music, it all fits together well and looks great. The graphics look a bit sub-par, but this could be due to the art-style chosen. The graphics are by no means bad though. The gameplay get a little repetitive sometimes, but this is made up for by different environments and enemies to fight. I love anything with loot, this game delivers. There's plenty up for grabs after defeating enemies, smashing things, and so on. I have used the auction house, I personally don't think I'll use it much but it's a great extra feature to have. Now, all that said, that all applies to when the game actually works.

Every time I have tried to play the game, I am plagued with login errors. I have had the game itself lag out due to connection issues. Blizzard has taken the servers down a few times for maintenance as well, which prevents you from playing the single-player at all because you cannot login. I have been, and am only interest in, playing single-player. Having to be online, logged in to their servers just to play the game is an extremely huge issue for me. This is the first game I have purchased with DRM as such, and I will NEVER make that mistake again. This feature, to me, renders the game broken. I cannot give a broken game a good rating. All that said, if they patch the game with an offline mode I would gladly give this something upwards of an 8... It's current state only deserves about a 3. I would not recommend this game to a friend because they would then want to fight me for making them spend $60 on something they cannot even use, and cannot return. You would honestly be better off waiting for a "cracked" version of the game that you can play offline, any time, anywhere. I do not agree with piracy at all, but in this situation I would almost encourage it. I own the game and if a pirated version gets out that I can play offline, I would download it immediately and give it more play than the version that I paid full price for.

Diablo 3 is only playable with a sustained internet connection, and if you happen to lose said connection at any point your gameplay, as well as any progress you've made since the last checkpoint barring exp, items/gold gathered, or quest progress is gone. Exploring a winding, confusing crypt (Spoilers: you probably won't be doing this much) and feeling immersed? We be prepared to start all over again if your internet decides to so much as hiccup. The lag is another issue cause by the forced online. Everything that I could see was server sided, if anyone on my connection decided to do anything I would have enemies rubber banding and attacks whiffing while they teleported around and whittled down my HP until it subsided. Maybe this is an issue with my connection, but the fact that I'm lagging while playing alone in a world generated specifically for this session is absurd. The gameplay in Diablo 3 borrows heavily from MMOs unlike its predecessor. Travel and exploration has been dumbed down to the point where there is almost always a warp point immediately outside of your quest goal, which is now written down neatly in an organized list (so you don't forget) located underneath your new minimap that details all quest points and portals before you reach them (so you don't get lost). A crafting system has been implemented (OH JOY!) where you have to legitimately pay your blacksmith over and over to skill up, then pay him again to craft things with materials that you provide by breaking down magic items. Combat is usually too easy, and tends more like grinding than actual gameplay. Even the biggest most intimidating enemies are laughably easy to kill most of the time and become little more than a time barrier between you and the next boss. Bosses are actually pretty good fights, they don't seem to rely on enchantments as much as D2 did and each boss has quite a few well planned out tricks up their sleeves. I'm sure the fights would be very entertaining if you weren't rubberbanding all over the map and spamming your potion button because your roommate decided to download a porno.

Overall it isn't anywhere near a good enough game to save itself from its unbelievably poor design decisions and DRM, and it certainly doesn't live up to the Diablo name.

Conclusion: a dumbed down version of D2 in terms of feeling, atmosphere, characters, dialogues but with upgraded graphics ( by upgraded I do not necessarily mean "better", just technically superior). I suspect the game was meant to be played by Justin Bieber fans, and people who use words like "cute" and "sweet" and "fluffy" 50 times a day. 60 euros down the drain.

There's something wrong when Blizzard is shipping a game that's not finished. The moment I got into the beta, I was underwhelmed. The graphics were blurry; my character and foes alike lacked detail. I know Blizzard strives to have games run on all machines, but Diablo 3 looks worse than Titan Quest, which is a much older game (with a map editor.)

I thought the constant achievements were stupid, but to each his own.

I can put this to the back of my mind, but now the game is out and I can't even play because Blizzard's servers are down for routine maintenance. When it is up, I disconnect often and generally have 1-3 seconds of lag ( I don't have the best internet.) My girlfriend has been complaining that the game keeps failing to save her progress.

Somehow I forgave them for doing this to Starcraft II, partly because I don't lag on it, but now I've had enough. This new Blizzard doesn't have the magic that the earlier generation possessed, and they can't make up for (I'm assuming/hoping) Activision's horrible decisions. I realize a good deal of my problems are technical, and some may be sorted out later, but I didn't buy the game later. I pre-ordered it. If this was some small indie developer doing a kickstarter, I wouldn't mind. But this is one of the biggest, most funded AAA developers in the industry. This game isn't worth 60 dollars to me.

Gone are the dark and unsettling dungeons of Diablo 2, filled with bodies manacled to the wall with their lower halves ripped away revealing dangling intestines. Gone are the massive basins in the Durance of Hatred with piles upon piles of corpses creating waterfalls of blood. This new art style seems to take pages from games like DotA 2 and Borderlands to give a much more cartoony, lighthearted feel. My final, and most pressing concern was the sheer lack of length of the game itself. Yes, I realize that there are 4 difficulties, but is playing over the exact same content 4 times really worth sacrificing the length and quality of the content itself?

My disappointment comes from the game itself. Lets start off with the "art style" or graphics which are blatant copy of WoW's. This art style worked back in 2004, heck I'll even say it was genius for an MMO, it allowed lower end PC's somewhat get through raids that required 40 NPCs at a time. But it just doesn't work for Diablo, it doesn't capture that Diablo feel and for a 2012 game, I expected more. I just don't get that dreaded sense that something is about to go wrong when I enter the depths of some old dungeon. The graphics are colorful and cartoony and they don't belong in the Diablo Universe.

This game has always been about loot, and still is but managing your skill/runes/talent tree was part of the fun and added lots of depth to the game. They have completely abandoned this style of play, in other words the game is a dumbed down version of its former glory. By removing this it is only natural that Diablo fans feel that their decision to remove this was mainly based off their Real Money Auction House. Where money is the driving force and Mr. Bobby CEO of Activision can line his pockets full of real money from people purchasing digital items. Way to stick it to us PC gamers Blizzard, it's still Blizzard making these abomination of games and xpacs (Cata/MoP) right? Right?

Unfortunately, this game still has a lot of significant problems. In terms of gameplay, there's nothing wrong with the basic formula: kill stuff , get loot, etc., and there's some fun mechanics to learn for each character. The major problem is that the addition of the auction house has totally ruined the scaling of the game, and I'm talking about the normal (legitimate) one, not the one that uses real money. When you put millions of people online at the same time and let them share every single item with each other, the "mega rare" items aren't so rare anymore, and competition drives the prices down...at the end of Act II I decided to spend about 45 minutes buying AH items (which was actually the most engaging and fun part of the game so far), and ended up with a maxed-out gear set for next to nothing. This was awesome at first, but then I proceeded to waltz through the second half of the game in a few hours. After a certain point it's just boring when you walk into the final boss's room without any preparation and beat him in a single try. I'm halfway through Nightmare difficulty and it hasn't really been any more difficult, although I expect at some point it might cross my mind to recruit a friend for some backup. Regardless, claiming that "the game only really starts on the second playthrough" is honestly one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard, and I'll never know why it flies for Blizzard when it wouldn't fly for any other developer on the face of the earth...for 60 bucks, there is a very distinct lack of content here.

The game being too short or too easy wouldn't be so bad if the game's story or graphics held up, but this isn't really the case either. The graphics are...well, unimpressive (even on max settings), and if you liked the whole "dark fantasy" feel of the series, prepare to be very disappointed because the art direction of this game is much closer to WoW than any Diablo game (there's even a few scenes that feel ripped out of SC2, but that's another story). Granted I was 14 when D2 came out, but I remember some of the areas being pretty creepy and grim...this is much more cartoony and vibrant. The sense of dread and loneliness is gone, there's NPC's everywhere and they really hurt the tone of the game. There's even awkward moments of attempted humor (I don't remember the exact wording, but a major boss literally says some variation of "I hate vegetables" as you fight him). It's very tame, if they removed the small amounts of blood in this game it could easily be rated Teen. Combine this with sub-par voice acting and a routine storyline, it makes for a bland experience.

So...obviously Blizzard did not spend all their time and money to deliberately make a mediocre game, so I only have one explanation for why this game is so disappointing: to me, every decision made throughout the development process seems to be about getting a mass audience involved in the Diablo franchise at the expense of the depth and artistic integrity that the hardcore fans love. They will make a killing on this game, especially when the real-money auction house hits. Some people might even claim to love it, but at the end of the day it's really hard to consider it anything other than a blown opportunity, and a sad way to conclude a wait of over 10 years.

    1. No real character customization. She kind of wondered why we had to put points into our chars when really there was no place to put them but what the game chose for us. This was weird. It didn't really seem like you were creating "your" character but creating one already chosen for you. This was a real downer.

1b. Skill switcher - Sorry this didn't fly well either. We have to open up a window to switch skills and select a new one. We don't have a box where we could put them on hot keys. "Why can't I just put my skills in some bar" she said.

    2. Difficulty - As mentioned before the game is very easy. I can't believe how simple it is to move around and kill mobs. I clearly remember d2 being harder with more monsters and harder "in ground" dungeons. I told my wife that she would have to beat the game in order to make it more difficult , and then "replay" the whole content again. She kind of laughed at that and said "no thanks." ie replaying the content to get a better challenge for her didn' really go over well.

There are far many games worse than D3, but $60 for this is absolutely a travesty. Graphics not great, audio pretty weak, and when playing you know that it's not worth even $30 so it makes the game that much worse. Everyone has said enough already, but don't buy this game now.

There is no way I pay anything to Blizzard again. Ever. That game is a sheer disaster. It is designed for casual players (read - "12-year old kids with fat bellies and their mums"), it has no RPG system whatsoever and the storytelling is just plain bad. The always-online DRM system is insultive, disruptive and poorly implemented. 60 bucks? Hell no.

However, the always online DRM restriction and the inclusion of the real money auction house force me to score this game based on how much I feel these two aspects negatively effect my game play experience. No matter what the fanboys say, Diablo has always been first and foremost a single player game, and Diablo 3 is no exception. The fact that I cannot play this game without an internet connection is completely unsatisfactory. I understand the reasoning behind it, but the bad outweighs the good by a very large margin. Besides the fact that there are other ways to accomplish what they are trying to accomplish (combating piracy and maintaining the legitimacy of items in the real money auction house) that don't include punishing legitimate customers. I think that people are for the most part being unfair and trying to hide their true motivations for giving Diablo 3 a low rating. The game play itself, graphics, sound and story delivers fairly well. However let's be honest, most people are angry about the always online DRM and the sorry state of the servers at launch, as they very much should be. This type of anti-consumer attitude from developers and publishers should not be tolerated by consumers. I know a boycott will never happen to the degree that it would need to to make Blizzard Activision listen, but hopefully all these terrible user reviews will make the bean counters that actually run things take pause and realize that perhaps this sort of thing is actually terrible for customer relations and WILL come back on them eventually. I also like to think that it's not actually the people creating the games that make these terrible business decisions, so we shouldn't necessarily be punishing them for the bad decisions their bosses make. However, SOMETHING needs to be done to stop these things form happening. It is ruining the game industry and the games that I know we all want to love... Expand

Gameplay: D3 is a snooze fest. As a wizard, my gameplay consisted of click right mouse button until mana runs out, then click LMB, until mana recharges. Occasionally break up the button clicking by pressing 1 for diamond skin, and 2 to force push everything back. But 90% is just clicking two mouse buttons. I have been playing for over 10 hours now, and am about to uninstall. Some people say if you hang in long enough, it gets really good. If I have to play for over 10 hours to get to the good stuff, then I think it is perfectly fair to consider the game sub-par, and not worth my time.

Visuals: Escapist Magazine had a great article on graphics vs aesthetics. But neither the graphics nor aesthetics fit a supposedly dark and mature game. The outdated, cartoony look was unimpressive, and did nothing for immersion into the game world. It seemed as though Blizzard wanted to continue the Diablo tradition of "rewarding" players for trudging through the monotony, with highly-detailed cutscenes. I suppose that's easier to do, when the majority of the game has1st-gen Playstation 2 graphics. Story: The story is nothing inspired. Typical good vs demons trying to conquer creation. Voice acting was adequate, yet not memorable.

Customization: Almost non-existent, and hardly relevant, when it popped up. You can't alter your character's appearance (aside from which equipment you wear), and your choices for which skills to level, are very limited.

Other annoyances: No ability to save your game. Your game saves online, when you reach a checkpoint, and you can only resume from your last checkpoint. Checkpoints aren't terribly rare, but if you have a real life to get back to, the lack of being able to save on the spot, is very annoying. I thought games evolved past that old forced-checkpoint formula, at this point. Speaking of which, I still don't like having to play a single-player game, with an always-on internet connection. Most gamers don't. And yet developers like Blizz insist on forcing these restrictions on us, knowing they will be unpopular choices. Fighting piracy has always been a poor excuse for punishing legitimate consumers. But I suppose professional integrity doesn't make you rich.

Blizzard has coyly stated that they aren't sure if they will port the game to console or not. Total B.S. I know a console game when I play one, and D3 is as console oriented, as any. It's not a matter of "if", but "when" will they do the port.

Not worth $60. Maybe worth renting, when the console port ships.

However, after playing the game more than I really wanted to in order to give a fair score, I can honestly say that not only is D3 a bad game, it's... well, it's sort of broken my faith in gaming. It's that much of a disappointment. It's the definitive example of a company taking a franchise that was built with love and care at it's conception, and turning it into a soulless cash cow with a complete disregard to the common gamer.

The scores on Metacritic are by and large NOT trolling. The critic scores, to put it mildly, are an absolute disgrace and a clear example of an attempt to buddy up to Blizzard - a gaming megalith - for future releases.

Let me be clear - I'm a Blizzard fan, I appreciate the quality they have delivered in the past, but you have to judge D3 on it's own merits and not as a fanboy of the company.

I could go into details as to what exactly makes the game poor - such as dumbed down gameplay, mind-numbing repetition, no time spent/reward ratio, an unbearably stupid loot system which renders 99% of everything you pick up utterly useless and a profession system which I can't find a negative enough word for... but it comes down to one very simple conclusion; Diablo 3 is comfortably the most disappointing game ever. But even if you took it as a standalone title and ignored the franchise history it's still one of the worst games of the year with very few redeeming features.

Do yourself a favour - if you have fond memories of Diablo 1 & 2 and you're about to opt for D3, please don't. Keep your memories of the good times safe and sound.

And the major review sites should be ashamed of themselves - actually ashamed - as you're misleading people into parting with hard earned cash for a title that they can't even return or resell when they find out how bad it is. If DRM is part of a title, honest reviews are going to be vital in the future.

First the new classes are interesting, new twists on old ideas. They kept the random generated maps and items which I also like. The story seems solid as well.

Ok on to the con's. First and foremost why on earth the devs decided to make a single player game require online connectivity to play is beyond me. Whats worse is the servers keep crashing, and I've experienced lag, which has killed me on numerous occasions. And its not like I live in the sticks with a shoddy connection either. This is where random maps become an issue, more than once I've been three quarters done with a level only to lose a connection and have to restart the whole thing on a new map.

Next major issue, they dumbed down the leveling so much, this no longer feels like an rpg, more like an action arcade game from ten years ago. Call me old fashioned but I like attribute points, and I like assigning them they way I want to. Its an interesting concept to be able to change skills at random, but honestly I don't even do that that much. Also, why are rewards for achievements new banner decorations? I don't get to use the banner in game.

Next is the items, the fact that nothing has any resale value essentially means I only bother picking up magical items. Even those I just pickup en mass since I no longer need to worry about portal scrolls. Again, that was part of the rpg element, managing your scrolls. Speaking of scrolls, or lack there of, why even bother having rare unidentified objects. It then just becomes a hassle waiting to identify something. If we want to make a game five year olds can play, why not at least make it streamlined and have everything identified. Oh and potion management and health globes, both useless. Why there is a time limit on health potions is again beyond me. I have a stack of no less then thirty potions at any one time simply because I cant use them. Then every third enemy drops a health globe anyway so whats the point? When I don't need health there's plenty, when I do need it I can't use it. Also the merchants are useless, their good seem to be chronically below my level. The only time I actually go to one is to repair my equipment. Even the blacksmith, who I try and keep a few levels ahead of me, is weak in the gear department.

Lastly the enemies are somewhat disappointing. They either seem to easy, or too difficult with no real sense of balance. In fact, the only boss I've even had a bit of trouble with was the the first, Belial. After that they all die way to quickly. I've had more trouble just getting swamped by waves of regular monsters. Overall, while the game does have its moments, its just too frustrating and simple to be that recommendable. Blizzard could fix most of the issues if they care, but we will see. If I finish the game it will probably be the last time I play it.

I like the genre, friends raved about D2, everybody was excited about D3. So I preordered D3 a week before its release date.
I must say this game is genuinely disappointing. The graphics are bad. I'd say they are worse than Torchlight 1 and on par with Titan's Quest. While I'm not a complete graphic snob, I must say I didn't build an overclocked expensive PC for lame graphics. I have no clue why these graphics are so bad. It isn't that the environments are draw poorly, they are not. I feel real thinking went into the design of the graphics, but the graphics themselves are not great. The sound is not amazing either. While it isn't bad per se, it isn't great either. I feel the sound is just average and not great in any way.
The voice acting is definitely below average. I seriously think you could mic me up and I could do a better job with it in one day. The game play itself is rather dumbed down. I really liked in Torchlight being able to assign points to 3 different skill trees. It let me custom build my warrior. This game is not like that. Once a Barbarian is level 5, he unlocks the same skill every time. There are few choices about your build. You can eventually use different skills in the slots, but only after they are unlocked in a uniform, boring fashion.
The story line isn't really that good, but honestly I have trouble faulting them too much on this aspect, as all games from this genre struggle to make the plot meaningful. I would say I thought the cut scenes were amazing (but few) and in general the story line is completely linear. Too damn linear. You can't even get confused or sidetracked, which seems lame.
Having to play online even in single player mode is a negative in my opinion. They end up punishing all the people that bought the game just in case somebody somewhere is dishonest. So now I'll have to be completely inconvenienced each time I play this game for life to teach somebody else a lesson. I defy you to provide another example in the free market of a company treating their paying customers this way.

I'm still playing this game. Now that I own it, I will certainly play it. If I had known the game was going to be such a disappointment, I would have never bothered with it. I feel like Torchlight 1 is a better game than this. They really, really let me down. As a first time customer of Blizzard, I can assure you I would not buy another game from them. I will, however, give Torchlight 2 a whirl.

I get the creator's vision and why they wanted to make D3 this way, but this really is a case of if it isnt broken, dont fix it. Diablo 2 didnt becoming a best-seller because they changed a ton of things in diablo 1, they kept what worked, fixed what didnt, and added new things. In this it seems like they kept almost nothing (bad) fixed what was fine (bad) and added new things (good). I wanted to like this game, i really did. But playing this game brought flooding back good memories of Diablo II in a bad way - as in I'd rather play diablo 2. Blizzard didnt become popular because it wanted to be a crowdpleaser, they came up original ideas and a original game and set a trend. This isnt going to be a benchmark for hack and slash, i bet the schaefer brothers are laughing right now. The plot was interesting and creative but...i can find so many loopholes in the story - you didnt even mention how diablo came back after destroying the soulstones in d2? Lack of customizability means im only going to play this game for 5 playthroughs and then thats it (instead of a possible 21 playthroughs - 7 classes, 3 specialisations). Blizzard made a reputation with WoW and Diablo 1/2 and then threw that all away and focused on money making schemes instead of the kind of company that makes a game because thats what theyre best at. You can do better than this Blizzard, and im not the only one who thinks so. I think you made a mistake letting the schaefer brothers go, they were your biggest asset for diablo 3, now theyre going to make the kind of game they were known for, and we're all going to buy it. Sorry to say this but im going to be recommending Torchlight 2.

The initial server stability problems were terrible but forgivable. Unfortunately, this game just isn't very good.

To begin, the actual campaign is very short. Acts 1 & 2 come in at a reasonable size, but Acts 3 & 4 just feel terribly rushed. This should be offset by the replayability of facing multiple difficulty levels in new procedurally generated zones. The generated levels just don't work; they compare poorly even to the decade-old Diablo 2. Typically there are few if any variations to the level structure, and randomization is achieved by dropping objectives and monsters haphazardly over this template. It feels completely entirely the same as when you cleared it the last time.

The game's story is weak. Admittedly, no one really plays an ARPG for the story, but this one just feels very lazy. In Diablo 2 events happened because you were chasing Diablo. It drove the story and events happened within that framework. In Diablo 3 it's not really clear what you're doing; you simply react to a series of events. One thing happens and you investigate, and once you finish off one antagonist a brand new one pops up to advance the game. There's little sense of continuity from one mission to the next. The one surprise built into the story is utterly predictable.

Of course, the important part of an ARPG is going to be in the characters, combat and actual gameplay.

Combat is a mixed bag. The developers have really tried to make fight more tactical at all levels of the game. When it works it really *works* and produces a fun and exciting experience. This really isn't made to scale properly with level difficulty. Rather than monsters acting more intelligently or providing more varied encounters, higher difficulties just tack on more hitpoints and damage to everything. There is a sweet spot where technique and character build really matter, but for most of the game you either crush everything without a thought or just die to your foe without even the chance to react. Champion mobs get special modifiers which can produce unique fights, but once again turn into a situation whereby they are completely easy, or impossibly difficult. There is definitely a spot where characters and difficulty match up perfectly. If Blizzard could manage to match these up more consistently then this could be a great game. For most of the game, they just miss. The place where this is most apparent is in the end game. It is apparent that Inferno mode was never properly playtested. Because the AI doesn't become any smarter as you advance, Inferno mode was made difficult by simply piling damage onto monster. The practical result is that classes that can avoid damage and attack from range can move straight to the end, whereas classes that were meant to mitigate damage and get close to the enemies cannot participate at all. In summation: poorly tuned, lousy story, and repetitive.

I suspect the game was purposely made the way it is so they could make money off the real money auction house. The fact that you are required to be online on their servers 100% of the time was just a terrible idea. It's very painful to see a series I loved so much to be ruined by moments of server lag, outages and mid-game disconnects. It really ruins the story aspect of the game when you're fighting Diablo for the first time and just before you kill him you get disconnected from the server. People were giving advice and begging for the better part of a year on the beta forums for small changes to be made and were completely ignored. The game was actually more complex back then and they ended up stripping it down to make it easier to play to the general audience. Only very small amounts of the game are randomized now. Most outdoor areas and dungeons are 95% similar every time you go through them.

The gear is just terribly done. Played through the game till act 3 of hell before I found a single unique (still no set items) and I was happy that it was a fist weapon for my monk. It was junk and I sold it at auction for cheap. Rare items drop very frequently and often are much better than the best set or unique items.

The boss monsters are jokes. Really. With a decent build and life steal as a monk you can stand and just punch Diablo in hell mode and you will rarely see your health dip below 80%. Meanwhile the elite mobs in act 1 will tear you apart before you can attack them.

I haven't played enough to really say anything about the balance issues in inferno or with other classes, so I'm not going to comment on that.

All being said, the game IS fun. $60 fun? Not really. As a successor to Diablo 2? Mediocre at best. Ignoring how much 'effort' they put into the whole game hub with the auction house, the game feels like a $20 indie game you'd find on Steam that you'd seriously consider buying but then would decide to wait until it was on sale for at least 33% off.

What's actually new here? Simplified skill system that takes away meaningful choice. Obelisks that transport you out of dungeons. No TP scrolls, no need to go to town to identify rares. Cash-based auction house. "Lore" bits that play audio over the top of the game itself (after popping out of the same stupid satchel), making it clear that you aren't role playing or adventuring here, you're controlling an avatar in a video game. Everything new is designed to make the game more accessible to casual gamers and easier to monetize. This is made perfectly clear by the need to have half of the dialogue be a retelling of 1 & 2. In the short term, I'm sure they made decisions that will help the bottom line. In the long term, this is how brands get destroyed. But I guess if you're an executive these days, it's all about getting your quick buck and leaving the consequences to the next guy.

For example, Act 2, by Blizzards own admission is supposed to focus on intrigue and deception - and has little of either that I could tell. The entirety of this Act was bland and unmemorable.

All of the alleged "twists" in this game were mind-numbingly lame. There are atleast 3 characters that suffer from memory loss, one of the most cliche and overused plot devices in existence.

Blizzard retconned and filled in alot of Diablo history to come up with the most convoluted and childish story every drempt of. The extremely contrived plot appears to be aimed at an audience legally too young to purchase this game.

There is no offline singleplayer, which makes sure your solo experience is filled with all of the possible connection and lag issues of any multiplayer game. So far these issues have been numerous.

The auction hall(s) and the game's dumbed down experience ensure that good items for your character are far too easy to come by, which is a huge flaw, seeing as Blizzard put a huge focus on gear to replace a completely gutted levelling system.

As a stand alone title, this game is mediocre. Keeping in mind the time in developement, and the legacy of the series, Diablo 3 was a dissappointment, whose "Concentrated Coolness" sounds way to similar to Dragon Age 2's "Awesome Button".

If you're going to put such intrusive DRManti-piracyanti-cheat measures into a game in the future, try to make sure it doesn't screw over half your PAYING CUSTOMERS who have no intention of hackcheatetc!! And yes I absolutely will give the game a poor score due to this because it has thus far ruined the whole experience for me.... all I want to do is have an hour or 2 of single player goodness yet most MMO releases are better than this. And no I'm not going to start rebooting my modem and opening random ports to try and solve this because I have plenty of other multiplayer games and even MMOs that don't require such measures.

Everything Accomplished Go to Bed to wake up early and play.

Start my demon hunter around 930 am played for a couple hours servers are down.

Continue playing with several server down moments all the way through normal difficulty exploring everything and going through all of the semi-boring repetitive lore. Day 3 - Beat Diablo 3 on normal and begin to explore the problem plagued auction house and start to notice several other bugs in the game.

Day 4 - About halfway through nightmare, Game has lost its fun and feels like Im grinding for no reason what so ever anymore. No Real World PvP, WoW style auction house and lack of character customization.
Day 6 - After a break decide to go back and play some more with friends, beat nightmare and began hell...yet still terribly disappointed with the game, beat nightmare and move to hell difficulty. Game play begins to require more strategy with groups and FORCED switching of skills to beat certain mobs and bosses. Beginning to see no real reason for the black smith as its redundant when the auction house is faster and sometimes cheaper also noticed that the way MF works has changed since diablo 2 and some stats are broken / read incorrectly with certain items equipped. Game keeps dropping me when I minimize for several seconds, making adjustments to my TDP and UDP drop settings on the router seemed to have fixed this a bit.
Day 7- Playing with my buddy and a higher level friend both having decently high MF after a friend that was outside our level range joined our game we noticed a significant decrease in yellow drops for that difficulty especially when none of us have beaten said bosses or champion mobs before, asked him to leave the game to try and see if him being outside the level range of the mobs effected the drop rate (AKA like an MMO where mobs are non-colored or GREYED out due to level range and do not drop loot anymore) did not seem to fix the problem. Only after everyone quitting the game and creating a new party was the problem rectified. Also took note that during peak game play hours rare drops seemed to happen less (Probably so the auction house doesn't get flooded and a ratio is kept especially since only 10 items are allowed on the AH at a time.)

Day 9 - Jumped online at an off peak time to test theory of rare drop ratio. So far evidence would dictate that it is true rare drop rates are lower during peak game play hours. Going to continue testing this theory without changing any gear and repetitively doing the same general quest / area with the same person as before.

My experience of the game so far ...
1 Graphics : Really loved the first play through even though the graphics were stolen from WoW except I give mad props to the implemented physics engine. The graphics are definitely not as evil feeling and dark as the original games which saddens me alot. I feel as though its diablo painted over WoW...and (SPOILER) **Whats up with this **** **** Pony Level? I was hoping for a cow level not some colorful pony level that hurts my eyes.** Fail on the graphics blizzard. 2. Sound: No complainants here really. Voice actors were good, I do think that some of the voice overs we WAYY to stereo-typical. Could have done a better job on the sound of some of the attacks and creatures for sure. BOSSES ESPECIALLY.

    3. Single Player Experience: Non Existent ; I did try to play the game solo when friends were not online, its way to easy. If you started playing multi player with friends you will no doubtly be geared better than soloists and it makes game play cheesy and boring.

    4. Multi player Game play : LAG LAG LAG , Having said that I have a good rig and great connection. Blizzard still has alot of kinks to work out. With a lacking choice in character classes and the lacking of a customizable skill tree instead of this forced style only allowing you to switch skills to certain buttons or hot keys to make you use "Strategy" for killing certain mobs in hell or inferno difficulty. A promised feature of PvP that was never released sadly hopefully it will soon especially if it only takes an average player 2 weeks of solid play to easily "Twink" out a level 60 character, I am not looking forward to the real currency auction house and arena based combat, I believe this will kill the game except for the WoW fanatics that will still be playing.

    Overall : Score - 3.5ish

I give them points for trying but money was on they're mind when they made the game and it was obviously rushed into production. I would have never guessed that they spent 4 years making this game. A new player to the franchise would even recognize that this was a poorly made game.

However, the bad FAR outweighs the good. - First is connectivity (DRM). I'm OK with it being online, but they need to stabilize the servers. I have a higher-end, very solid system with high-speed cable internet and I still get disconnects, huge latency spikes, and game crashes (2 of which have caused me to lose loot from a boss).
    - Second (related to DRM) is the hacked accounts. While many users are at fault for hacked accounts, this would never be an issue if there wasn't DRM required.
    - Third is the graphics. They are decent and I understand that they are marketing to all systems and not just top-end, but they look worse than WoW which is almost 10 years old. How can we have gorgeous games like Skyrim out there with games still being released that look like D3!?
    - Fourth, huge lack of features. Can't break apart chat channels, disorganized friend's listings, terrible searching/sorting capability of AH, etc. There are so many of these basic features they could have ported over from WoW and they would have been perfect but right now they're just garbage.

This game feels like an Indie game that was developed in about a year or two, not a big 'box office' hit with 8+ years in the making. Fun, but a long way to go to be a 'good game'.

My friends were disappointed in the removal of customization, but decided not to judge the game based on half of act 1 that was available in the beta, so we bought the game, and played. For the purposes of this review, I will completely ignore the inconsistent server issue, as that is poor management and not poor game design. However, I have found myself unable to play past seven hours of Diablo 3, for the following reasons: 1. Immersion gets a score of 1/3. Journals are almost always ignored, and when you read them, they don't tell you anything to advance the plot. They are more like reading snippets of a bad fanfic than anything actually having to do with the game. The characters have absolutely no depth to them. All characters in the game are one sided and repetitive, nothing to make me think that they are any more than polygons on a screen. Progression: Progression is backwards. I see numbers getting higher, but enemies always die the same way, attack the same way, appear the same way. It feels like the same battle with different skins. Progression gets 0/3 points. Playability: It is playable, but barely. The game lags on my computer on the lowest graphics possible in singleplayer, and I can run skyrim, team fortress 2, with little to no lag. My friends have similar issues, in that it even lags in singleplayer. However, the quality of the graphics at higher levels is good. The voice acting is decent, and the cinematics are entertaining. Playability gets 1/2. Personal score: I cannot say I hate the game, but I don't really like it. I feel it isn't worth the money I spend on it and would take a refund if offered in a snap. There is one thing, though. They put a lot of work into the small things in this game, and I appreciate that. Easter eggs with references to other things (no spoilers now,) are always appreciated in my book and deserve one point for recognition. 1/2 Expand

Poor story, poor character customisation, drops that don't make sense(better quality drop worse stats), Cartoon-ish graphics and the worst thing as far as I'm concerned that Diablo atmosphere that existed in D1 and D2 just isn't there. I suppose I should have expected Blizzard to produce a game that feels like I'm playing WOW but it's been over three years since I left WOW I don't want to play it again. Expand

This game is a huge waste of time. The Blizzard politics of WOW have taken this completely over.

it doesn't matter how high your magic find gets (which is really not very high) you will still just as rarely find anything as if not having magic find at all. The only increase you will get is blue and useless yellow items. They actually tried to promote that there is no limit to the magic

The only increase you will get is blue and useless yellow items. They actually tried to promote that there is no limit to the magic find hinting that Diablo 2 was limited.

You will be around second act of hell mode when you realize you are 58-59 under geared and that the experience dulls because of the level cap of level 60 when you have to grind 1-2 million gold per piece of equipment to be able to have any kind of fighting chance to make it to Diablo in act 4 hell. This actually would have been remedied if the level cap was 99 like it should have been, then you would be able to experience becomeing more powerful instead of struggling against thousands of bosses just to grind enough gold to buy 1 object in the auction house.

The story line was a huge improvement by about 1000 times, it's just a shame most of it is in books you need to pick up, which you will not pay attention to and only pick up for achievements.

Diablo 3 is the perfect example of Capitalism gone crazy to make sure that you 1. go back to WOW and keep paying $15 per month until the expansion comes out.

I have been waiting over 10 years for Diablo 3 to come out and they didn't even make it full 3D. I feel very upset and cheated that they only tried half way to make this game a wonderful experience yet underhandedly reserving 80% what it should be to pad their pockets later.

DO NOT purchase this game! it is a huge slap in the face to loyal Diablo fans and is only meant to make addicts of the next generation of players, while discarding the old school players.

The whole feel of the game is that you know some executive little weasel is sitting in a throne some where undermining everything wonderful about the original 2, setting a stage to make you buy expansions of long waits to unlock little pieces of what diablo should be in 2-4 expansions of years of wait, to make sure you go back to WOW and pay your monthly fee and get ready for the next expansion.

you are also not permitted to comment on battle.net about diablo 3 if your WOW account is frozen.

Once again Blizzard has failed to meet expectations. Marketing hype does not make a good game. The key things that are wrong (IMO) with Diablo 3 are: 1. Short, repetitive gameplay. 2. Always on internet DRM for a singleplayer game, with no benefit to those that paid for the game.
    3. Auction house where rare items are too common and cheap, enabling you to equip your character in yellows in all slots and steamroll the gameplay.
    4. Real money AH...why? Adds nothing to the game but is the justification for always-on DRM and earns greedy Blizzard even more $$.
    5. Graphics and artwork are subpar and do not meet gamers expectations (wheras the audio is great). Good effort but just doesn't meet higher standards. Cut scenes are obviously where a lot of the development resources went...
    6. Nothing new for the jaded gamer.

Underwhelmingly awful. The game is repetitive and boring and doesn't carry-through the darker undertones of Diablo II that somehow made this type of gaming interesting. I was placed on a different server to my friends but was not warned of this - this meant later after we'd started, we couldn't join-up and play with our characters.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
